Really loved his class. Great sense of humor, and a really good instructor overall.
Professor Meyertholen is an amazing professor and overall a really caring guy. It was his first quarter at UCSD and he wasnt confused or lost at all and gave great lectures. He posts everything on his course website so it makes it really easy to go back and study. He has mandatory pre class questions (homework) and clicker questions.
One of the best professor's I've ever had! Personally I am not good with physics but this guy made it very easy to understand. He really cares about teaching and knows his material very well. Great feedback when asking questions and quizzes are really fair if you put in the work.
Came into 2B expecting a really bad time but Meyertholen made it pretty pleasant. He has videos which basically pick out all the important bits from the section and the examples drive home what you need to know for the quizzes which are a good difficulty level.
you can tell that meyertholen truly cares. even though his final and 4 quizzes (where you drop the lowest one) are difficult, he curves the class fairly to keep the class average reasonable. the material for 2b was still very challenging. he has mandatory iclicker (graded for participation not credit), discussion, and pre-lecture questions.
Professor Meyertholen is one of the best physics professors here, his lectures are very engaging and clear. His pre-lecture videos are truly amazing. His quizzes and test are fair. Take him and he will make you love physics!
Professor Meyertholen is a well respected professor.
This was Dr. Meyertholen's first quarter at UCSD and he was hands down one of the best professors ever. PHYS2B, without a doubt, is a pretty rough course, but Meyertholen makes his lectures down-to-Earth so the concepts are understandable. There is optional homework but I would recommend doing it for extra practice for quizzes. One of the best!!
I joined this class feeling very insecure after getting wrecked by physics 2A and I just naturally hated this subject. However, this professor completely changed my mind and made me fall in love with E&M. Not gonna lie, I worked really hard and his exams are pretty challenging, but you will learn a lot. He is just an amazing lecturer no doubt.
Really nice and also very good at explaining things. He makes PHYS 2B less esoteric and more understandable by connecting it to everyday life. Mandatory discussion attendance, but the worksheets are actually pretty helpful. Homework wasn't mandatory and isn't necessary to do well in the class.
I absolutely love Prof Meyertholen. He made E&M feel way easier when everyone in the years above me were telling me it was going to be the hardest lower division class that I take. He made lectures clear and easy to understand, was extremely available to answer questions, and willing to adjust grading scales to help us succeed and do well!
Great professor overall! If you put in the time and effort, you can be successful in any of his classes since he provides pre-lecture videos and thorough slides that are available online (along w video podcasts so lecture isn't mandatory if you don't need participation credit). Section was mandatory, but definitely beneficial in the end.
Great prof! He was heavy on us for the first 2 quizzes and then he adjusted his lectures and homework accordingly. Generous curve + interesting and useful lectures 100% take him again.
All I have to say is, the curve is lovely and he is funny.
He really cares about his students and his lectures are to the point and clear. He also sends out surveys along the quarter to adapt his teaching and answer specific questions about lectures, so it feels like he wants to help everyone out. Overall the topics and the quizzes are still pretty hard, so you have to work a lot for a good grade.
Best professor EVER!!! He is super sweet and caring to his students. I came to physics 2B expecting to take a fat L but he ended up making the class super fun and bearable! 1000% recommend
I love Professor Meyertholen! I don't like Physics at all but he made Physics interesting to learn! He made this unusual home quarter amazing and would always listen to student input. He was extremely accommodating. His quizzes were difficult but definitely fair, no surprises, if you watch lectures, attend discussion, and understand the homework.
If you pour some time, you would get at least b. Generous curve.
I went from hating PHYS to loving PHYS in general because of this professor. His lectures were organized and helpful. He explained complicated concepts in PHYS in such a simple way that everyone could understand it. He gave out enough practice quizzes that could prepare you well for the date of the exams. Take him if you want to learn PHYS.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. EVER. I didn't do well in PHYS 2A and was expecting 2B to be about the same. Meyertholen has interesting lectures and a reasonable amount of work that make it easy to learn. That was the biggest thing for me, as someone who never took physics before college, i feel like im actually LEARNING which is kinda wild. take this class
Have pre-class questions and pre-class lectures, so lectures are clicker questions based and there is limited amount of hw. Great Prof! Super funny and sweet! Definitely take him!
Professor Meyertholen really showed us how much he cares about his students throughout the quarter, he also explained everything very well. Weekly quizzes were all based on what he taught us in lectures. Of course, the material is kind of difficult but I believe he did a great job explaining it and we understood everything very well thanks to him.
Prof. Meyertholen is a fantastic teacher. His jokes make the lectures a lot more fun to go through, and he explains E&M in a way that is highly intuitive. In light of COVID-19 and BLM protests, he made all the appropriate accommodations and was very understanding. I would strongly recommend that you take him for PHYS 2B should he be available.
Probably one of the best professors in the Physics department. He gave us enough materials to be prepared for his class. Reading the textbook is recommended to pass his class but it is not needed.
Professor Meyertholen is one of the most understanding and caring professors out there. He made many accommodations based on students' needs. His lectures are clear and easy to follow and he does a great job breaking down complicated concepts.
great guy, good prof, don't worry if you fail the weekly quizzes, since there is a nice curve. attend section and do all of the homework to the best of your ability, it really helps
Professor Meyertholen is one of the best professors I've had. He keeps class very lighthearted and he is extremely knowledgeable. He goes above and beyond for his students to help them understand the topics thoroughly. He does assign a lot of work, but it helps immensely with understanding the material. Highly recommend him if you're taking 2B.
Very understanding. Will cater material to the class and listen to feedback. Quizzes and test were representative of the material in lecture
He is an incredible professor, everything was very understandable. Attendance is not mandatory for lecture but it is for discussion. I will 100% recommended, he is the best professor I had so far.
He truly cares about the students. Makes every effort to promote learning. Very accessible. I feel lucky to have taken an introductory course with Prof.M.
discussion is mandatory & questions are due before each lecture. mastering physics & quizzes alternate each week, but he uses a 2-stage system where you correct your quizzes and can earn more points. his attitude towards physics and his students what i admire most; he's someone who genuinely wants to help his students succeed and pass the 2 series.
A very nice Professor. My blood pressure rises whenever I need to take physics, but Prof. "Hey Physics" made it way lower.
Professor Meyertholen is a solid choice! He's funny and will listen and tailer to feedback! Quizzes are worth a lot and contains some tricky questions, but his "re-do" system made them less harsh. Not a lot of homework, but I would highly recommend doing the optional practice. Only thing I hated were the mandatory "study group" style discussions.
Definitely my favorite prof I've had at UCSD so far. Always went out of his way to make lectures engaging and his grading is very fair. Take his class if you have the chance!
I love his teaching style. Students need to read the textbook before the class and finish clicker questions (graded by effort). Then, he will mainly give examples and solve them in the class, which is more helpful than using the lecture to teach all knowledge for me.
i'm so sad to drop this class b/c i have to focus on my other one but i'm def taking him at a later time. i love his teaching style and he makes lectures so engaging. he also makes students excited to learn and adjusts to make the most of our learning
Quizzes are worth 50% of your grade so beware. He truly does care about his students though and is very accessible outside class for help. I am taking his again next quarter because I liked him so much.
I had some basic knowledge. So, overall my course is smooth.
I took 12 APs in high school and failed 2, both are physics. Thought I would never understand E&M but Dr. Andrew explains everything clear. Gives past quizes which are reflective of real quizes. Not much HW but there are many practices availiable both during lectures and on Mastering Physics.
He is the greatest professor in the world. Andrew can always make my day because his lecture is pretty interesting and understandable, and he is pretty patient to explain everything about the physics after the class. If he could teach me through out all of my physics classes, I would transfer my major to physics immediately.
Meyertholen is an amazing professor who creates engaging lectures that often have a slide or two made to give everyone a laugh. His quizzes are a little difficult but if you know the material you should have no problem getting an A. Overall a really great guy and a fun class.
ADORE MR. PHYSICS! He definitely understands how hard physics can be and makes sure to add some fun into his lectures to help. He is very accessible outside of class and genuinely wants to see his students succeed. If you have the opportunity to take him, definitely do!
Andrew is really a nice professor, he cares about students really much and is easy to reach out of class. His lecture is clear and attractive. the quiz covers the material during the lecture and is not out of bounds.
Dr. Andrew is definitely one of the best professor I had at UCSD. Up tp this point he is the only professor who can let me understand physics. Not much mandatory homework but there will be optional practices provided. Phys2B was a though class for me but Andrew is able to make me understand most of the contents. Also huge curves. 100% recommend.
He is a nice professor, really good at teaching and really understandable. Lectures are very helpful and big curve.
I highly recommend Professor Andrew for taking PHYS 2A and 2B. He teaches good lectures and not that huge amount of homework. Although electricity is hard, he tried his best to teach it in a much easier way. Also he gives big curves which can boost everyone's grade. He is one of the best professor in UCSD.
Was truly one of the better physics professors I've had. The lectures were helpful and the homework only helped build on what we learned in class. Attendance is not mandatory but he does use clicker scores a small portion (around 3%) of the final grade. He also has a great sense of humor which he displays throughout lecture as a comedic relief.
the class is not the easiest but Professor Meyertholen makes things very clear. Straightforward with his expectations. Exams are similar in difficulty and structure to homework - a huge plus so that exams are less scary. likes to add humor to his lectures which always makes things better.
Professor Meyertholen is a great professor. He is very caring, and is one of the best professors at UCSD. His lectures are also very helpful for note taking.
Professor Meyertholen really understands how difficult physics can be. Although he does go through the course at a fast pace, he is always accessible in OH. I struggled with physics in high school but now I have a new appreciation for it and a better understanding. Furthermore he loves to take about 5 min of class to wake the class with some jokes.
Prof. Physics is one of my favorite professors so far at UCSD. This class is not easy, but he is aware of that and gives students endless opportunities to do well. He always has office hours, disc & si sessions, and genuinely wants to see his students succeed. Barely any homework but a huge part grade is tough quizzes. He always curves though!
If you can, TAKE HIM! Physics is hard I mean at least for me they were. He makes hard topics understandable and he is very patient. He holds a lot of office hours and he actually wants us to learn. The quizzes are somewhat hard but he curved some. Recommend.
Meyertholen was a fun, caring guy and made lectures really interesting. If you have no prior physics knowledge, though, this class will be tough. I took AP Physics and still barely got an A in this class, but you get to drop one quiz out of four and the final was heavily curved. Lectures and discussions were mandatory, you will need an iClicker.
Physics is already a hard subject but he makes it even more confusing like when he goes over clicker questions he flies by them and when u review them later, his handwriting sucks. Some questions on the tests are similar to clicker questions (which he uses to grade you on attendance) but he sometimes will ask you a question from past topics. -.-
I'll be completely honest, he is a funny and caring guy but when it comes to actually teaching, his class is plain bad. He expects his students to read the textbook and watch the videos before class and treats his lecture as a review session. It's easy enough to get grades because of the curve but he doesn't even teach, at all.
One of the best physics professors ever. He simplifies the difficult concepts and makes his lectures engaging. Includes at least five minutes of break where he cracks jokes and lightens the environment. His pre-class videos are the most helpful in understanding content. His quizzes are hard but are fair. Homework is difficult but optional.
Meyertholen really cares about teaching. He explains things in multiple ways to make it easier to understand. He even takes the time to learn the names of students who speak up in class. He is extremely kind and very invested in his class.
I never had a physics background before his class, and he made it very fluid and understandable given that the material is overall difficult. He was very transparent, and always made lecture fun with some of his "brain breaks" and group discussion. He truly cares about his students understanding the material and doing well in class.
Dr. Meyertholen is an amazing professor and is hilarious. His quizzes are not too hard and he does curve:) . Make sure you use all the resources he provides because they are really helpful.
Dr. Meyertholen is clearly well-versed in his field, and did a decent job making difficult concepts easier to understand. He is very funny and everyone seemed to like him in class. Lectures were sometimes confusing and his handwriting is one of the worst I've ever seen. While his class was fun, I had a difficult time with the material.
Meyertholen is a caring professor, and his lectures were clear. They mostly consisted of practice problems because there are videos you're expected to watch before lecture. The quizzes were difficult, but not impossible, and they're curved. There are 4 quizzes & a final. He explains difficult concepts pretty clearly which I appreciate.
Professor Meyertholen is caring for his students and makes his lectures more engaging. He explains the answers of his in-class questions, which require explanations to help students apply. Students must listen to those and take more time to understand the concepts and the math. His quizzes are difficult, which is why he provides practice quizzes.
Amazing prof, great lectures, engaging and not boring at all, work is tough and exams are even tougher good luck freshmen :)
Meyertholen really cares about his students, and is very generous with grades. Just do all the practice problems and quizzes he recommends, understand how to do all of them, and the class will be easy. Good lectures as well. I had never taken a physics class in my life before, but the class does not expect any background knowledge.
4 quizzes, 50% of the overall grade, being test heavy. He curves each of the quizzes making the average 70%. The problem is that if u get the average, 70%, you will get a C. The good thing is that he gives extra credit if you score over the curved score. Overall he is great, various formulas for grade calculations, he is caring and nice.
4 quizzes make up 50% of the grade but you can drop one. final is 30%. he curves them to make them more in line with historical averages. lecture attendance is worth 3% (can't opt out) and lectures are podcasted. he loves physics.
The professor is quite nice in lectures. The professor gives extra videos before class to watch prior to every lecture, and during lecture, he gives iclicker questions and examples. Though the course is challenging overall.
He is passionate about the subject but not the students. His tests never truly resemble the practice we did and his review sections helped little to none. Did everything he asked for and passing the class was barely manageable. He has used the same product the last 5 years and his grades this quarter show that he cant explain material well. Just no
Andrew Meyertholen is one of the worst professors I have ever had. He does not care about his students or seem to want them to pass. The discussions do not help at all, and despite being passionate about physics, he shows little regard for his students. He shows favoritism.
I've never had this much trouble in this class. It's a flipped classroom and there's no room to succeed if you mess up. There's no support for this class, the TAs and Tutors literally gave me the wrong info about a few topics about 4 times.
I lowkey feel like his quizzes this year are significantly harder than the ones given before. My roommate gave me his quiz from last year to study with. So much easier than what I got. I thought the quizzes were going to be fine, since discussion problems weren't bad. Nah the quiz was significantly more difficult. I DO NOT RECOMMEND! MUST AVOID!!!!
I think the average GPA speaks for itself. (2.5 for my section) I had to study for this more than my upper division classes. I'll be seeing this mofo in my nightmares for the next quarter...
Won't lie - physics is really hard. But there are many opportunities to succeed. The homework is a lot harder than the quizzes, but I don't think a lot of people do it (costs $65 to access). Meyertholen's flipped class format is great practice, but you need to add more as needed. Overall, you have to fight hard for a good grade.
I struggled so much I would consistently study to fail quizzes. I liked the flipped lecture format, but during lectures concepts would get more complicated. Practice quizzes were easy compared to quizzes, HW was difficult and didn't reflect content, also looked to people who did better to gauge performance and didnt explain clicker questions well.
He gave a quiz every other week (4 quizzes), which came with nice curves ranging from a 4% curve to a 17% curve on quizzes, making the mean about 70%. These quizzes were very fair, it lined up well with his practice quizzes and discussion. Attendance though was mandatory, but it was not too participation intensive. Would take with him again.
He's nice and all, but when it comes to actually teaching, he sucks. He allows us to opt out of any assignment. HW cost $60 and it's only 5% of our grade, so I opt out. He sucks at teaching because he "teaches" us something new everyday that was irrelevant to the last. Tests are totally irrelevant to what we do in lecture. Average Grade: C (2.08)
Attendance is mandatory, but the lectures are at least interesting; he also tries his best to make them engaging. There were 4 quizzes and a final that represented the materials covered in class very well.
He is absolutely amazing. His lectures are amazing and he gives regrades on quizzes. he also practically lets you know what will be on the quizzes during lectures, so if you go to lectures (which I highly suggest because he is an amazing teacher) you will be set for the class. He has a pretty flexible grading scheme, and is amazing to learn from.
Great professor, great class! It was a bit tough at first because I didn't have the background in physics many other students had, but he made it easy to catch up. Pre-lecture videos and clicker questions were super helpful, and his class had a very interactive learning environment overall. Really cares about your learning.
SUCH a sweet person! has his funny moments, does brain breaks. wants to get to know class and ppl to participate. made the class super beginner friendly, SO well prepped for tests from course content. homework is light, just a kinda weird schedule. the "quizzes" are actually midterms LOL great at explaining concepts, tailored learning environment.
Before every class you are expected to read a chapter of the textbook or watch the video associated with the chapter as well as due a short PCQ. The PCQ is only two questions and is graded purely based on completion. He does this so that his lecture are based on what the class seems to be struggling with the most. Overall amazing professor!!
Class itself covers very easy concepts you can learn by yourself. Professor is great: he makes lectures interesting and engaging. Only annoying thing is attendance is mandatory so you physically have to be around the lecture hall to receive credit for iclicker.
Very good professor, one of the best. Hardest part of the course was taking quizzes every other week. In total the quizzes are worth like 50% of your grade. Not bad but some MCQs can tank your score.
my king he's the best
Meyertholen uses a "flipped classroom" style, where you conceptually learn the material before class through his pre-lecture videos and textbook, and then you go through solving problems in class, which I found helpful. While the material is challenging, Meyetholen does a great job of trying to break everything down before integrating all concepts.
Amazing professor: gives pre-lecture videos to help you understand the content (way better than readings). Homework policy is very lenient; gives a lot of extra credit and curves quizzes. If you can try to take him, he made me actually enjoy physics (especially considering how hard 2B material is).
He is the teacher you wish you had for every class. He makes E&M really easy to understand and I feel had I taken any other professor I would have been struggling. What makes him amazing as well is how respectful he is and his dedication for students first. In my class the average quizzes weren't great so he would help boost up the scores as well.
Prof Meyertholen provides plenty of resources to succeed. Do the interactive textbook content, it will prepare you for trivial MCQs on the quiz you may otherwise not get. His lecture content is extremely clear and he does not deviate far from it.
He is a nice professor who tries to help his students succeed. He gave out 4 quizzes (very brutal), worth 50% of the grade, and a final, which was worth 30% (also brutal) of the grade. The homework, discussions, and in-class questions are worth 20% of the grade. Conclusively, the content is hard, and the quiz averages are low.
He was extremely chill and made his class very fun. With that said, your grade is like 85% tests and they were very hard, but at least there was a decent curve at the end.
Great professor. Lectures are straightforward and informative. Hes the best physics professor I have taken at UCSD. He gives out extra points if the quiz averages are low. Quizzes and exams are very fair.
