this guy only shows powerpoint in the class and he only uses pictures to tell you the stories. he has way too many readings and too many quizes everyday in the class there is quiz. this guy doesn't know how to teach.
Really nice guy, understanding. Class is boring, just shows powerpoint presentations everyday. Quiz on all readings, which are boring. 2 papers, group presentation, and final. But manageable, and at least he's a nice guy!
Lectures are all over the place, but a very helpful teacher in general. Took notes on everything, and then only got tested on 1/8!!!
I loved this class! The reading is heavy and the quizzes can be a drag, but I thought that Prof. Miller was very interesting and fun. It would help if he took his time in the lectures a bit more. However, the subject matter is interesting and the papers, presentations, and final are not that hard.
Prof. Miller's class is pretty challenging, but very interesting. There's a lot of reading, so don't sign up if you can't spare the time/effort.
Cool teacher but weekly tests that are very hard. LOTS and LOTS of reading for the tests. All the lectures are based on powerpoint, somewhat boring. Would not take!

great teacher, very helpful and open to talk about improving in class. gives weekly tests on reading materials. no midterm just a big final...
Teacher extemely nice and helpful. Hard class!!! Quizzes each week over assigned readings. Way too much to read and remember-hardest part of class. Lectures interesting but don't try to write everything down. Be specific in notes. The last exam is comprehensive but gives you the whole exam and can bring in notes. This is most important = 50% grade
VERY good professor. He is really passionate abt wat he teaches but is EXTREMELY TOUGH! I have never read soooo much in my life! there is a quiz ever week...on ALLLL the readings..if u honestly have a good 2-3 hrs just to dedicate to reading all the material and memorizing and understanding..take this course, other wise STAY AWAY!
He's really interesting and makes class fun, but assigns a lot of work(mostly readings) and has weekly tests.
I took this as a night class. The material is somewhat interesting, but his lectures are not good. He is a medieval historian so he compares EVERYTHING with that, which makes no sense. He reads all of his lectures and seems to not know it. Open note final and one paper, but quizes every week, He curves the quizes, but its not worth it.
this class SUX SUX SUX SUX SUX! He cannot teach for the life of him; extremely unclear and reads his lectures off his notes while u look at powerpoints of stupid cartoon pictures. tests every week, huge final and paper, hard grader. avoid at all costs, if you would like to keep your sanity!
I thought this class was awesome. It will take a good amount of your time and effort, so this is not a blow off class by any means. If you're already interested in Roman History, you'll learn a ton and find out that you actually retain it, not forget it. Anyone who complains about the reading is a baby. THIS IS COLLEGE.
Do not take this class unless you have a lot of time to read. He is passionate, interesting, and effective. You must do the work and pay attention in class in order to get a good grade. He is a tough grader, but recognizes hard workers. I am not a history major and I still pulled off an A. (It took a lot of time away from my other core clases)
IDIOT! UNCLEAR, YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO TAKE NOTES OFF HIS POWER POINTS BUT IT IS ALL PICTURES, HE MAKES YOU READ LIKE 200 PAGES A WEEK OUT OF 10 DIFFERENT THINGS AND THEN QUIZZES ON THEM. HE WAS HORRIBLE, I THOUGHT THE ROMAN EMPIRE WOULD BE FUN, TAUGHT BY HIM IT DIDNT MAKE ANY SENSE!
Professor Miller is a very good teacher. YOU HAVE TO READ in order to do good on quizes. I took both 285 and 210 with him and enjoyed it a lot. From his classes you can really learn a lot. Havig said this, it does not mean that you can relax in his classes. You have to work hard for A-B range.
seems like he really doesn't know what he's talking about. answer to every question is always "i'm not 100% positive". isn't a teacher, especially a college professor supposed to be knowledgeable on the subject they teach? gives weekly quizzes, that aren't particuraly hard, only if you read--read every detail on the assignments.
anyone who whines about how hard prof. millers class is is an idiot.. its easy if you work hard .. and he knows his stuff you guys are probably not paying attention .. teach on prof. miller.. teach on!
To all those complaining about the reading... have you forgotten you're a student in a university? 2-3 hours of reading a week is a small workload for an easy A. Besides, the readings are very interesting and his lectures are great; they're fun and they always end early. If you have any interest in the subject matter, you'll enjoy his classes.
Professor Miller is a good teacher, but the subject matter is difficult. His finals are NO LONGER OPEN BOOK. Because of this, I did not do well.
Way too much reading, if your looking to fulfil a requirement don't take him.
Here is the deal w/this guy. You have to read 70pgs a week(which is fine) but they are mostly stories of what people did in the middle ages. then you take a 10 question quiz weekly. 50% mc/50% short answer. Uses pp. but not as a teaching aid DOESN'T PUBLISH THEM. After submitting e-mails he never answered the questions right. Not worth it! DR. Hst
Professor Miller is one of the best teachers in the History Department. Those who complain about reading face it: to learn history you have to read primary sources. Moreover, primary sources are fun. I learned a lot and got an A.
Great professor & class if you're interested in learning about Medieval History. Informative and fun lectures, excellent use of Medieval sources and maps. I hope to take many more of Dr. Miller's classes.
A Great Professor and a great class; however, you must have an interest in Medieval History in order to get through the strenuous weekly readings. Miller is extremely knowledgable, helpful and fair. Despite failing 60% of the weekly quizzes, I got a B+ in the class. Just do well on the 5-page paper and take-home final!
LOVE him! He is so great and I really did learn a lot in his class. It has also made me very interested in medieval people!
Prof Miller is a good teacher and is very excited about history. The biggest problem is that he is a Medievalist focusing on England and France. The first 3 classes out of ten are medieval history and he only glosses over the Renaissance. So if you are interested in the Renaissance or Italian history, you might want to try a different professor.
Great teacher, very clear, and nice guy. His lectures are somewhat engaging even if you don't like history. Weekly quizzes on the readings, 5-page paper and take home final. You have to do the readings to pass and it helps when writing your paper. Highly recommend taking his class.
Great teacher who is very passionate about Medieval History. Kind of hard class for most people...very helpful if you talk 2 him
DO Not take him unless you love the middle ages. If you just need a history elective this is not the class for you. Also he tells you to buy two books, You only use one so if you get stuck in this class only buy Reading th M A Source book.Final is soo much work 7 essays in class must provide sources not allowed to use note card. Stay AWAY!!
One of the best teachers I've had at Depaul. He knows his material, has been to the places that you discuss in class, and is very engaging. Class is all powerpoint presentations full of personal pictures but are very entertaining. Take good notes and do the reading and there isn't any reason you shouldn't do well even if you don't like history.
Yes, the class is a lot of reading but Dr. Miller is probably one of more laid back professors at DePaul. His lectures are interesting and is really passionate about the subject. He is really helpful outside of class and goes over the final material in-class. Overall, the class is fair if you do the work.
because of the ratings I took Miller. His expectations for an elective class is ridiculous. I am a hist lover, but all that he is focus on is sources, sources, sources. The weekly readings are hard to understand & his quizzes are tricky. He is a hard grader. The final is dumb, he needs to realize that not everyones a hist major. I regret taking him
I am not a history major, but this class that focused on england was very interesting in my opinion--he is very nice and hilarious too & passionate about history! he is always willing to help as well. WEEKLY quizzes (do your readings!), one 5-6 pg paper, no midterm and a final. TAKE HIM! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Not reccomended for non-history majors. He is very passionate about the subject, but weekly quizzes make up 35% of the grade and they are all primary sources, most of which are in old english. Too much work for a GenEd, but its a great class if you have a true interest in history
Take these words from a third year student: do NOT take this class to fulfill your history requirement. His grading is not fair nor is it impartial. In fact, his grading is ambiguous and unclear. Prepare to work harder in this 100 level class than any other 300 level class. Excellent class for history majors but not for students trying to graduate!
dr miller is possibly my favorite professors at depau in the history dept. he's really intelligent and passionate about the middle ages. the class is very heavily emphasized on sources and lecture. the paper for his class i would recommend doing days ahead of its due date & the final is pretty brutal. defiantly recommend!
Prof Miller is my favorite teacher at DePaul and I'm not even a History major. Lots of reading, but it is interesting and if you read the quizzes are easy and ensure a good grade in the class. His lectures are engaging and I looked forward to each class. The final is a lot of writing, but if you paid attention all quarter it is not that difficult.
AWFUL CLASS. Dont waste your time or money. He is not too hard, but the class is not enjoyable. Only used one textbook the reading the MA sources. AVOID if possible if not than bring something to class to keep you entertained because he doesn't Good luck. Im glad it's over!
Prof. Miller is great! He is really interested in teaching and he makes class fun. While there is a lot of reading of primary sources, people who are actually interested in history should be fine. I looked forward to this class every week and plan on taking every class he ever teaches!
Easy A if you are interested in history. You must read!!!!
DO NOT TAKE HST 171 WITH MILLER. it will be the biggest mistake you have ever made. the amount of effort he expects is atrocious and you will waste all of your time for other classes studying for his awful weekly tests.
Loved the class. Loved the professor. He's a no nonsense type of guy. Will make you work for your grade which is what a good professor does. You NEED to read and NEED to go to class, you will benefit and your grade will go up. Not reading = failing. Reading isn't bad at all. You're in college, get used to it.
uhg.. He's such a nice guy and clearly interested in the topic, but he's an awful teacher. SO much reading for a 100 level course and he picks the most obscure parts of the reading to quiz you on, so you basically have to be an expert on everything to even pass this stupid class. Awful, do not take.
Literally the worst class I have ever taken at DePaul. Avoid HST 171 AT ALL COSTS. I have never gotten anything below an A in a class and I'm barely hanging onto a C and I'm studying for hours a week. Harder than my 3 other 300 level courses.
DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU JUST NEED TO FULFILL A LEARNING DOMAIN.
He's absolutely phenomenal. MAKE SURE YOU DO YOUR READINGS, and you'll be set. He's funny, friendly, helpful, and a really good teacher. It's some work, but it's worth it
ALOT of reading. BUT do the reading and you'll get an A. Most people in the class are people who LOVE History & read it for fun. The teacher himself is REALLY knows the subject content well and LOVES Euro History. Enthusiastic. Traveled Euro. 2 papers. Good Teacher. Quiz every week.
Prof. Miller is a great instructor with a real passion for history. I had him for History of Ancient Rome, and, while the class was very difficult, Prof. Miller will work with you to get you on track. Just remember to read! I had trouble with the quizzes until I began doing the readings the night before so it was fresh.
Very passionate about the history of England. He knows his stuff you must read if you want to do well. go to class !!!!because there is a quiz every week.
I love Professor Miller. The lectures were more like conversations as he encouraged participation and made it easy to do so. The assignments aren't too bad and he's available for assistance. His aim is not to make it difficult to pass the class--he's there for any questions or assistance. One of my favorite professors and classes.
I loved history with Dr. Miller! He literally knows everything about the topic, and his lectures are amazing. He is an incredibly nice guy and is will clarify if confused. You MUST read if you want to get a good weekly quiz score. Take the class if you don't know much about the middle ages, you will learn a ton. Amazing and very nice professor!
I loved history with Dr. Miller! He knows EVERYTHING about the subject and he had amazing lectures. You MUST read if you want to get a good weekly quiz score. He is an incredibly nice guy and will clarify if confused. I am hoping to take his other history classes in the future. Overall, very very nice guy and amazing professor!
Professor Miller really knows what he's teaching and this made assignments so much easier. Standard work for an honors class. I would definitely take a class with him again.
Dr. Miller was a super great guy. Super understanding person, I remember we had a disagreement about my Midterm Paper grade, after discussing my view with him he took a second look at the paper and moved my grade up by an entire letter grade. Also, extremely clear when it comes to what he expects out of his students throughout the quarter. Take him
Extremely vague weekly quizzes which count for 20% of your final grade. Be prepared to be quizzed on the most obscure parts of the reading. He does not post grades online so you never know how you're doing in the class unless you ask him (be prepared for a vague answer). I would not take this class unless you already have a PhD on Ancient Rome..
Heavy readings every week. Weekly tests on those readings ask you the most difficult details, which account for a whopping 35% of your grade. 100% agree with the reviewer below. Tough grader and expects a lot... Make sure you have a LOT of knowledge on Ancient Rome before taking his class.
Take this class if you like being quizzed on very specific parts of the reading which really do nothing to increase your knowledge on Ancient Rome... Lectures are alright and the paper isn't too bad. I would definitely only take this class if you are already an expert on Ancient Rome though.
AVOID.
Prof. Miller really knows his stuff. He really doesn't check for attendance but I recommend going to class. Class consists of 9 quizzes, a paper, and the final exam. I would definitely take him again.
He doesn't check attendance but I would recommend going bc there are a few questions on the quizzes that come directly from his lectures. I also would recommend REALLY reading the textbook & not just skimming bc the questions on the quizzes are hard. I didn't have a book the whole quarter due to a shipping mishap but he was really nice about it.
Great teacher who's very interested in history. I hated history and he made me actually enjoy it. Super cool laid back guy who is pretty funny. Lectures are actually interesting. Tests every Thursday on assigned reading which are very easy if you take the time to read.
Overall it's was a great class. You can tell History is his life so expect very informative lectures. Quizzes every Thursday. My advice would be to jot down key information while reading the sources assigned.
Yes, he is a super nice guy, and gave me an extension for my final paper. But his quizzes are impossible. I read every week and take notes, but end up with a 5/10 or 6/10 on every quiz. I usually get all A's, but i'm barley hanging onto a C. This is the hardest class I have ever taken at DePaul. If history is not your passion or major, avoid.
He seems intimidating at first, but is a super nice guy with awesome lectures Paper:6 pgs. Offered extensions, went through the rubric in detail, and offered help Quizzes:10 Qs with a bonus question. Pretty tough, but if you read and take notes on key info you'll do fine-I got 100% on most. He's also lenient on open ended questions Final: doable
You HAVE to read. I got a 6/10 on almost all the quizzes and I thought I was going to fail going into the final so I tried really hard on my final exam and paper and some how ended up with an A- in the class. He is very understanding and gave me an extension on my final paper. He is not impossible, you just have to try hard.
Very passionate, interesting speaker, and easily accessible. Very knowledgeable about history and is very successful himself. However, reading quizzes every week are extremely detailed and annoying, however not worth a lot of your grade. You get out the effort you put in: PLUS HE'S HOT.
Incredibly intelligent professor. Nothing but good things to say about him. Makes class interesting and I look forward to it each week. Very successful on his own as well, love seeing professors still working on their own education! Funny and engaging, as well as easy to work with. Would love to take another of his classes.
Class is pretty easy, quizzes are very specific but not impossible if you do the readings. But beware of the final. He specifically told us not to worry about primary sources on the final, which would be entirely on the lectures. Turns out the final was 100% on primary sources that we had to remember in detail and cite. Pretty unfair and ridiculous
Dr. Miller is an awesome teacher who loves what he teaches. His lectures are super interesting and he is a nice guy with a great sense of humor. You have to do the readings, but that is to be expected in a history class. If you want to learn, his classes are wonderful.
Passionate professor, possibly the best professor in the history department. He lays down his expectations and doesn't have surprises in his class. His primary source quizzes are very specific, but if you have a decent memory and do the readings you'll ace them all. The primary source quizzes are more to test whether or not you've done the reading.
Great, intelligent man. DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE.
Very smart. Passionate on history. Not phoning it in. Approachable, nice.
Super cool guy who obviously knows what hes talking about. The class is just so much reading. I had to read a lot of the material multiple times to get ready for the weekly quizzes.
There's weekly readings and quizzes, the test aren't hard if you read the sources multiple times. The end paper is assigned early so make sure you start early. Take detailed notes on lectures. Very knowledgeable on the subject. Don't skip lectures you'll miss chunks of information.
Really kind and passionate about history. Weekly reading quizzes composed of 10 questions, final paper, and final test. Do not use your phone - at all - he will see you and take your grade down a notch. Super funny, just wish that all of his classes had powerpoints with text on them. lectures are very interesting but hard to follow without notes.
Loved Dr. Miller! Honestly, all the people saying that the quizzes were too hard simply weren't reading enough of the primary source material (I totally made that mistake my first few classes) and just want an easy pass class, which this isn't. So much fun though if you like history, highly highly recommend!
He's a fantastic professor. I did not expect myself to be interested in the First Crusade, but his enthusiasm and knowledge about the topic really made me eager to learn more. You'll be reading a lot. There will be short quizzes for each chapter you read. A couple of papers to write, and then one final exam and one final paper. Wonderful class.
The class was definitely a lot of work but honestly it was great. History is not always my cup of tea but I thoroughly enjoyed the class and learned a lot about the crusades.
Overall, solid professor. The class is a TON of work, even for an honors class. However, if you are going to take this class, it is best to do it online. Lots of pop quizzes and lots of reading but it really is a good class and you learn a lot. He makes the crusade really interesting and you'll know a lot by the end. Just don't fall behind!!
Awesome and funny lectures, and teaches interesting but varied topics (Roman Empire and Witchcraft to name a couple). There are quizzes for his 200-level classes, but pulls sections of reading that will surely stick out as long as you at least skimmed. The average amount of reading and writing.
This course is definitely a difficult one, get ready for lots of reading and papers. although there was a lot of work, I can say I thoroughly enjoyed this class, the material is so interesting and even though the lectures are long, if you pay attention and do the readings you'll be more than prepared for the papers and the final exam.
Okay this was an awesome class to take for a history credit. It was super lecture heavy but the lectures were always fun and interesting. The hardest part about this class would be the readings, they can sometimes be difficult to understand.
A lot of reading but its manageable. 10 quizzes every week or two but he drops the lowest score you get and curves them. You can do well on the quizzes if you remember patterns or things in the readings that stand out. Lectures are interesting so although the class requires a lot of work it pays off and hes very passionate and knowledgeable.
Professor Miller is truly an incredible teacher, he knows his content and is very eager to share his knowledge with students. The work load was A LOT... but I loved the subject and did not mind doing the work. You need to know your own time management capabilities before taking this class, otherwise you will fall behind.
Prof. Miller is a cool guy and can be very funny but the lectures can also seem to stretch on forever sometimes. Since they are just lecture notes accompanied by some pictures, the structure of them can be a bit hard to follow at times, and there is a LOT of material covered in a short amount of time. Very knowledgeable but definitely a tough class
I took Professor Miller for Witchcraft in Western World. He is a really interesting and thought provoking teacher. If you are interested in the subjects he teaches then for sure take his class, he is very passionate and just overall good at teaching. This class is very heavy with reading however in my opinion, the readings were never boring.
Professor Miller is a good teacher, he is well versed in his studies so everything he teaches you know will be factual, but the amount of homework and the way quizzes are graded in his classes can be considered harsh. If you're looking for an easy class with a lax amount of work, I don't think this class is for you.
Fantastic lectures every single day of class. Don't be afraid to ask questions during the lectures. Lots of reading but you should expect that when taking a history class. Very disappointed however in the lack of feedback from my papers. My grade for my final paper + final exam essays were never even posted. Quite disappointed in that.
Andrew Miller has been the worst professor I have had at DePaul with the most readings I have ever had to endure. You are quizzed on them too so you have to understand them. I will give him credit, he is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject, but just reads off a paper for his lectures, and doesn't post notes for help anywhere.
Professor Miller is very knowledgeable about the subject, but he is not a good teacher. Classes consisted of lectures over an hour long, and students were not allowed to not take notes on their computers. Also, the PowerPoints consisted of a few words on each slide, and they were not posted online. I have more complaints, but I'm out of characters.
responding to the comment beginning with: Andrew Miller has been the worst professor I have had at DePaul; the information about tests and quizzes was clearly posted on the syllabus. GOOFY
he's a decent guy, but this class is unnecessarily hard. quizzes every week about TINY little details. VERY strict about papers. no computers allowed, so you have to hand write notes for 1.5 hours. my hands hurt so bad after every class. miss a class, you're screwed; the notes are essential for the papers. he won't help you even if you're sick.
Extremely knowledgable and gives insanely compelling lectures. he was super nice and respected his students as well. with that being said his classes are not easy! lots of reading and writing, not a class to ignore or blow off.
Very interesting class/lectures. I really enjoyed this class (Ancient Rome: Augustus-Constantine), however you will need to do a lot of reading to do well. He assigns lots of readings and tests over them every week with specific questions you'd only know from reading very thoroughly. He tells you pretty much what to expect with papers
Lecture based class. Handwrite notes. Only take notes on laptop if you have a valid reason. PowerPoints just have images. Get ready to read some complex readings and there are weekly quizzes based on what you read. The quizzes do get curved. 3 papers (6 pgs, 12 pgs, and final of 4 pgs). Can't skip
It's clear that Dr. Miller is passionate about the subjects he teaches, but the way he teaches is incredibly difficult to follow. No text on his slideshows/often tangential with lectures with no notes to help follow along, offered little help outside of class when I asked, difficult readings with detailed quizzes every week, no tech allowed.
Dr. Miller is extremely passionate and knowledgeable in his classes. The class is very lecture heavy, however, they aren't boring. Cellphones and other forms of electronics are also not allowed, so be prepared to write. He was very respectful and as well would work with you if something arose in your schedule, such as work or an illness.
Do NOT take a class with Andrew Miller. First, you're mistaken if you think you can take the amount of homework. There is so much reading, an absurd amount (about 5-6 hours/week), and you are quizzed on them. The lectures take up the entire class and you barely learn from them. You can't find the lectures online either because you can't use tech.
He's tough but his syllabus tells says students do around 8 hours of reading per week per class. Totally doable. That means 30 hours of homework is from taking four college classes in a quarter! Dude, read the syllabus! Reading comprehension is key to success for sure. Lots of primary source readings but interesting lecs and not a bad guy.
Reads from mostly from script in class. Will drop a letter grade if you use your phone in class. If you miss class for any valid reason, you have to ask someone else for notes, he will NOT help you. Quiz at beginning of almost every class (account for 30% of grade). Funny, but not funny enough to make a 200 level class this overbearing.
Great lectures, always an interesting class to be in. Final paper is hard but doable if you make enough time for it.
History student writing. Miller is the last great history professor who has not made room for students from no child left behind. If you want to be held to a standard take his class. As a historian he is absolutely exceptional. 2/5 disability friendly.
Don't be fooled by the interesting subject, this is the hardest class I've ever taken. Do not take this professor if you aren't a history major, it's not worth it. He's very intelligent and funny, but the amount of reading and length of the final paper for a gen ed was pretty insane. Recommended for history majors ONLY!
this is not a getaway class, this was such an interesting class and I loved it, however, I got by with taking a lot of good notes in class, definitely an amazing professor and historian but if you aren't willing to put the work in, don't recommend.
First class I've ever dropped. I took 'Witchcraft in the Western World' because the topic seemed interesting but it turned out to be extremely difficult. Professor is extremely knowledgeable but I always felt confused. Listen to the other review that said do not take if you aren't a history major!!
I genuinely don't know why I didn't drop this class. Don't let the interesting topic fool you, this class is ROUGH. Textbook reading is absolutely required because he quizzes you at the start of every single class and then just reads lecture notes for the rest of it. The only reason I learned* anything was out of fear of failing the quizzes.
On and off the lectures, straight fundamentals, no funny business, You can't read fifty pages a week, then you ain't ready for this sauce, This shit ain't nothing to him man, He's movin' like Dracula, he get it back in blood, you either come up or get done up, You see it, he really did this, he's really him.
Wonderful lectures keep you engaged. They weed out the less enthusiastic students, and he gives space for discussion, which I missed in a classroom. I love that we were all able to be off our electronics and engage with the professor. Would definitely take another one of his classes!
He demanded a whole lot for a 100-level class, but was as knowledgeable about the material as any prof I've had, in any subject. Lots of reading. He can come across as aloof but is really kind and funny if you try for him. If you have an interest in medieval history, he's the guy to go to. If you just want an easy A, definitely look elsewhere.
