hard fair class.
Very willing to help you however possible. Class is long and boring, but he explains everything very clearly. Tests are tough, but fi you pay attention in class then you shouldn't have a problem.
Prof. Nevai made Diff Eq enjoyable and actually fun. He was flexible in his teaching methods, sympathetic to different learning styles, and very accessible outside of class. He offered an adequate opportunity to succeed in this class, which is more than can be said about some other math faculty. I would take any class with Prof. Nevai.
Ok, I did my hw, askd him questions, studied like crazy. Material is not hard but his tests were ridiculous. He's a nice teacher and will answer ne questions. I mean in my class 10/50 made above a 60. Curves the tests but they were hard!!
The material is easy to understand, but the tests are absolutely, positively, 100% ridiculous! Take this professor, ONLY if you already took MAC 2311 before.
Let's face it, nobody really does a superb job in calc...but if you take Dr. Nevai you will do well. He grades tests on a curve based on your classes mean (most tests the mean is 50ish, so if you get a 50 you get a c-)...also gives 5 points ec per test...all you need to do is a simple poem or something and email it to him. He is a very good teacher
If you are not naturally good at math, I really suggest you take someone else. Prof. Nevai helps but not much. He makes up these ridiculous exams questions that are not in the book homework. Exam mean around 40.
I think all these rating for him are misleading. He's helpfulness is very limited and at times, he acts like he could care less whether you pass or not.
Very good professor. Its calculus, its not always easy but he is very willing to help out if you are having a problem. Some test questions are a little off the wall but he offers extra credit on each test and the curve is HUGE. If you do your hw regularly and study, you should do fine.
He gives pop quizes, and his tests are really difficult. but he speaks good english (which is a big deal in our math department) I suggest going to the math lab if you take this class. It is the only reason i passed (along with the curve and extra credit he offers). Overall good teacher, i would take him again if i could! =]
you have to do all the hw. he doesnt assign any, but id say just do the odds of each section. his class is alright. his exams are hard and he expects you to study everything, but not everything is on the test. but all tests are curved, so if you do ur hw, study, and visit the math lab, you will be fine.
He was a great professor for DE.. He grades hard, but curves. I really enjoyed his class, espcially for a math class. He makes the class enjoyable and is a great lecturer, its just a miserable class.
hate this class. First class i had to retake at ucf
He was a good teacher I think. Gave our class 5 extra credit points (for each 3 tests) for a creative work that related to our studies. Tests were brutal, when I got my grades back I thought for sure I would fail but I ended up with a C+ because of class average he ended up curving. But I enjoyed taking this class, felt like I learned a lot.
he's VERY hard don't recommend him if you want an easy professor, test are ridiculous and he asks EVERYTHING so make sure you study everything he has a pretty descent curve you learn a lot, but its not easy
He is a terrible teacher. He doesn't give you credit for the things you should get credit for on tests. He writes paragraphs of notes during his lectures and doesn't really explain much. H is very knowledgeable but he doesn't relay info well. I would not recommend him.
Easiest Logic and Proof class! Take him if you want an easy A. Plus lectures online so no need to go to class.
Hard and not very helpful in the office. Try's to show you the quickest answer and kick you out. He doesn't give you points on a test unless you do problems his way even if your answer is correct, it is wrong. Don't take him.
Good professor. He gives lots of notes, so be prepared to write a lot! His tests are challenging, but are fair. Questions are similar to those in the book and examples discussed in class. He gives random pop quizzes, but sometimes they are only attendance quizzes, so make sure to attend class! Study and you will be ok!
Don't take this guy if you don't have to. His notes come straight from the textbook and the homework is absolutely ridiculous. Only plus I would say is that he speaks crystal clear English, but what he teaches is very inconsistent on what he evaluates his students by.
This teacher is absolutely crazy. I am a math major and I love proofs but he made it impossible for anyone to do well. Half of the class dropped by the withdrawl deadline because everyone was failing. He isn't compassionate and his homework and tests are so difficult that no one has gotten an A on anything in this class. Don't take him.
Amazing professor. He teaches very thoroughly and makes the material fun. The tests are a little difficult but more than fair. He uses MathLabs but doesn't assign much homework at all (usually 20 questions per section and we covered 3 sections a week). Take this professor if you can.
Dr. Nevai explains concepts crystal clear, like he is proving something to a dissertation committee. But this didn't teach me how to solve problems. The only reason I didn't get below a C in the class was because I went to Supplemental Instruction 3 days a week and mathlab every day. There I learned how to actually do the math.
If you want an A I don't recommend him, however, if you want to learn he's one of the best math teachers I've come across (Math Major). Our class started with 60 people and ~45 dropped due to difficulty but he curved our grades at the end to the point I went from a high C to an A.
Very good professor. Though the lectures are long (summer class), he tries to keep you interested the best he can. He is a fair grader (curves based on mean of class). Would definitely recommend him if you want to learn the calculus well.
He gives paragraphs for notes, has very hard tests and grades harshly. Has curve based off in class test but the average grade on those was a 52% NOT helpful when you email him.
Professor Nevai is great at explaining course material and produces excellent notes and examples. However, I would not recommend him. His tests and quizzes are brutal and he's an unfair grader. He does give opportunities for extra credit but they don't really help out in the end.
He is really interested in the subject but he does not give enough examples. I never knew what to expect going into the exam. When emailing or asking questions he most likely will not answer them, he will just reword his original information and you will be confused.
Dr. Nevai is a great professor. He's kind of weird in ways but at the end of the day, the course material is explained very clearly. Just doing the homework in this class will not let you pass. He is very vague as to what material is expected for the exams so you must know ALL of it. Work hard and you'll pass just fine. Highly recommended.
You have to take really good notes in order to have a chance. (His lecture speed is slow so its easy). His notes and lectures are super clear, but he goes deeper into the diffy q curriculum than other professors. Because of this his class is much harder than the others. He gives a generous curve and is a pretty cool guy. Study hard
He is very clear in his lectures, just there is A LOT of material and a tough subject. He curves and provides easy extra credit. I recommend taking him for differential equations. Try not to miss class as a lot of material is covered in a single class.
He's a really great person but his class can be very challenging. There is a HUGE jump between the class work and the homework, and a pretty big jump between the homework and the exams. He is very helpful during office hours but you have to be prepared with specific questions as he doesn't give anything away. Very clear and nice during lectures!
Great professor! His lectures are thorough, and he addressed all concept concerns the class before exams. Excellent office hours. You need the online textbook code for homework, but didn't use book. Curved at the end of class, offered EC on exams. Be thorough and careful when studying, extremely comprehensive exams (lecture notes are best IMHO)
Great professor, takes difficult calc 2 concepts and makes them easy to understand, every test has a little extra credit
Notes are taken in class, so if you miss class, you'll miss a lot.
This course has no real textbook so ALL his notes come solely from him. If you skip class, you'll be completely lost. There is a big gap between lectures and homework, but everything really does tie together if you spend the time thinking about it and applying it. No tests and all homework is take-home. He is super helpful if you go to his office.
This was quite possibly the best math class I have ever taken. The concepts are easy to understand and he really tries to make the lectures fun and comprehensive. If you plan on skipping class frequently, I would not recommend him. However, if you DO attend class, you should be more than fine.
This class is without a doubt the hardest class I have ever taken. The Homework isn't bad because there is a help me solve this tab but once you get to the quizzes you are out of luck. If you do not pass the hw with an 80% you aren't even allowed to start the online quiz and automatically receive a 0%. The test are extremely hard. DO NOT TAKE.
I was told that this class was for "non-math" people and I figured that it would be easy. BUT NO. The goal of the class is to "find the beauty of mathematics" and I have honestly never hated a class more. Professor repeats himself multiple times which is originally helpful but unneeded. Avoid this class at all costs.
This class made absolutely no sense. His routine is the same every day so you know what to expect, however the lectures/notes don't always line up with the MathLabs homework/quizzes. This class has nothing to do with math.
This class is for non-math majors and some of the chapters I just did not understand because of the way he explained it. He sucks at lecturing, he just rewrites the textbook in class and calls that notes. The only reason I pulled a B was because I managed to self-teach myself. Would recommend the class but do not take it with him.
Find another class. There is an entire chapter on math that super computers do. Hw is due every week and if you don't get an +80% you can't take the quiz, doesn't sound too bad but the notes rarely help with the assignments. The tests are impossible, the class thought we did well but 200/300 students got a C- or lower. He is hard to work with.
I would say the class is horrid & don't take it but Dr. Nevai is brilliant and overly qualified to teach this course. Speaks very clearly, helps with notes. Gives extra credit opportunities. Content of class is what kills people. Expect some homework to take 5-7 hours. Good HW and quiz scores will help you pass if you do poorly on tests.
I expected the course to be easier than it was. Every day is pretty much the same, just a lecture that takes parts of the textbook. He repeats everything twice which can get grating. He isn't a bad guy, it's just a super boring class. I only got a B because he dropped low grades and curved the midterm hard. IF you study, an A should be very doable.
Cares about the subject and is passionate about it but the class is all mathematical and almost no biological interpretation. Most of the time you are just analyzing Differential Equations and don't even know what any of the variables stand for.
nevai is a weird dude and this math is a weird math, but go to class and take the notes even if it seems pointless, because he bases his tests off of his notes. give yourself plenty of time to do the homework before it's due
This was the worst class I have ever taken in my life. I was told this was going to be the "easiest" math class but it's really not. I spent hours on hours studying and I still didn't pass. No one knows how to tutor this class because it's not even real math. Do not take this class especially not with Nevai.
Professor Nevai Himself is very good at explaining concepts thoroughly. However, the grading criteria leaves no room for error on any of the big exams. There is basically homework everyday till the end of the class. There are then quizzes for every homework assignment. All those grades combined can be wiped out by a bad grade on the midterm test.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! I barely passed with A's on all the homework, which would usually take me 7 hours to complete. When I went to seek help from the math tutors on campus they didn't know how to do half the stuff either. There is no doubt that Professor Nevai is very intelligent, he simply lacks the skill-set for teaching. It was truly awful.
Probably my most preferred lecture style. Dr. Nevai wrote the entirety of the notes and even included his explanations in writing. As he was writing notes he would read out loud what he was writing. The pace was slow, which allowed the mind to digest what was being presented. Homeworks are challenging, and require out of the box thinking. Good.
Nevai was a tough professor but he was definitely a good one. He doesn't do in class questions so if you want to bug him during lecture, don't bother. He has a schedule to get through and is always promoting question time during his office hours, SI, the GAs, etc. Tests were intense but the grading scale was fair. Recitation should be worth more.
Knows the subject (Mathematical Bio) extremely well. Lectures can be heavy (take notes) and compose his tests (can be on-site, can be take-home). Online quizzes are easy if you took notes and get the material. USE THE SOFTWARE, IT'LL SAVE YOUR LIFE AND YOUR GRADE!!1!ONE!! Really chill with grading and accessible during office hours.
He drops your lowest homework grade and replaces your lowest test grade with the last test grade if you did better on it. The homework is online but doesn't help much with the tests. The tests are very difficult but he does curve them. His lectures are somewhat helpful
Make sure to take detailed notes on all of the lecture material that Dr. Nevai writes on the board. You can skip the proofs if your hand gets tired. Lectures were always clear and well thought-out. Read over your notes later the same day, and again one week later. If you understand the homework and all of the lecture notes, tests will be fine.
Very neatly done notes. Reliable structure. Uses unusual vocabulary but still understandable.
The notes are very straightforward and he gives examples throughout the lecture, just get ready to write a lot of notes down. He also has extra credit opportunities for each of the midterms and the final. The online homework can get pretty ridiculous in difficulty at times, especially near the end of the semester.
Professor Nevai has an interesting teaching style that can take some time to get used to, but once you do he is great in my opinion. He really cares about students so if you are struggling, go see him for help. He will really see the effort you put in and it matters to him.
The majority of the grade was based on tests. Thank goodness for the small homework grade that saved me in the end. It is a lot of information to remember for a test and that hurt me. His notes were very good though.
Professor Nevai is the hardest professor for Differential Equations, if you just need to get a basic understanding, I recommend taking another professor. Lots of useless memorization. Only 2 Exams and a cumulative final. Rushed towards the end to make sure all material was covered.
GOD I love this man. Small class size gave a personal relationship with Prof Nevai, and he really tries to make diff eq interesting. If you liked calculus, you'll like this class. Very structured notes, open to questions, puts a lot of effort into his work. Very heavy on theoretical understanding and notation though, lost a bunch of points on exams
Professor Nevai is really passionate about Math Biology, but homework is worth 80% of your grade and is very difficult. He does curve based off of class performance, but getting an A is difficult. Homework is loosely based off of lectures and usually has something unexpected thrown in.
I took Andrew Nevai for mathematical biology. His passion for teaching shows every class. Moreover, he gives respect to each student equally. The homeworks (which were worth 80% of the final grade) are rather challenging, but any math major should be able to ace them with dedication.
This man is different than most UCF professors, he spends A LOT of time preparing his material, presentation and HW. He actually made the hardest class understandable. Very caring person, wants you to succeed.. He would always encourage me to come to his office hours when I struggled on HW. Hard work, but I would highly recommend! I'M GRADUATING!
He is amazing and really fair for grading. He is the best! I love math because of him.
Spends too much time on pointless proofs. Hard to stay awake for most part. Quizzes are too hard and homework is barely worth anything. Feel like you don't learn anything. tests arent too hard if you look at study guide but you will feel like you don't know anything. avoid him
Dr. Nevai is a very nice person and will help you with any questions you have. However, if you're the type of person who expects a math class to mostly be doing practice problems all period long, DO NOT take Nevai. He cares about what he teaches, however he hardly works practice problems and instead focuses on proofs and notes like a text book.
Nevai is a unique instructor, to say the least. Very tough test grader, and lectures are really dense with content. His teaching style takes a while to get used to, and is a little distracting from the content of the class. All the exams were very challenging. Decent guy, tough teacher.
Nevai is a great guy who is passionate about what he teaches. He learns who his students are. However his tests were VERY tough and even though I aced the other areas of the class one test grade failed me. He does not drop any tests as well. He rarely does practice problems and leaves them for homework. You'll be rushing to keep up with the notes.
He is passionate about what he is teaching and explains things very thoroughly. Just be ready to memorize a lot of information on his tests. The tests were always pretty fair, though, and all had extra credit opportunities. Lectures were long, and notes were extensive, but he made an effort to keep the class engaged.
I took him for mathbio 1 and 2. He explains the material very efficiently and effectively. Grades were based off of quizzes on webcourses and several difficult but doable homework assignments. Mathbio 2 also had a project as well. He is very accessible outside of class and very helpful. Definitely some of the best math classes I have taken.
Nice guy but tough class, lecture boring but test harder than the homework and the notes. Definitely needed to use outside resources to understand. Thankfully curves!
Quizzes and Exams are impossible to pass. The average for the first test was a 48% and 64% for the second test. His lectures are extremely dull, and you will get a hand cramp everyday from all the writing and proofs. Very smart guy if you ask the right questions, but he avoids questions regarding test prep like the plague.
Although his lectures are almost identical to the textbook, you learn a lot from his lectures that would be harder to learn from the book. He does a good job of explaining proofs and tries to make sure everyone can understand. Homework assignments are long and challenging, but he was always helpful during office hours. Great professor overall.
I suspect a lot of these other (positive/good) reviews of him are actually Professor Nevai. My experience: He does NOT care, he is NOT a nice person. His lectures are VERY dense. His study guide was: study EVERYTHING. He is very stingy on points for tests, and doesn't give a justification as to why he gave those points. AVOID AVOID AVOID!
This man is not an educator. His lecture notes are straight from the book (copy/pasted), quizzes are overly complicated, tests MUCH harder than homework, devotes 10 minutes to test review questions but will not answer any of those questions. He sets out to fail students. He is a lazy teacher, commits as little time as possible to students
This professor told the entire class that he made our second test intentionally hard in the hopes that people would drop the class.
Avoid at all costs. Probably my worst experience I've ever had taking a class. Unecesarrily hard, infeasible time constaints for exams, problems nothing like homework or textbook, lectures though proofs and does not provide enough examples. Online quizes are overly complex and tricky for the sake of being tricky. His goal is to fail, not teach.
His notes and quizzes make no sense. As for exams, he only wants the final answer. He won't give you any partial credit for any of the work you did. His inclass lectures don't help with the exam. His teaching curriculum is atrocious. This is the first ever review I have ever done and this professor was the worst professor I have ever taken
COVID happened in the middle of Spring 2020 semester. My professor for my class at the time pivoted to recording lectures on his laptop in his living room. Nevai, on the other hand, decided lectures (for an advanced math class, mind you) wouldn't be necessary. At all. He graded 2 problems per 8-problem homework, which was worth 45% of the grade.
The class's content is not difficult, however, he makes it much harder than it needs to be. He rushes through lectures and tells us to just watch the recordings. Quizzes and tests are almost purely conceptual. He refuses to be flexible during the pandemic. I have a 3.9 GPA as a senior and I am slated to fail this class due to his poor teaching.
Don't. He doesn't respect your time, usually goes 5-15 minutes over (once went 30 minutes over) then says "watch recording if you need to leave". Exams are arbitrarily tough. Lectures are copied straight from the textbook and often times have errors that he tells us to fix. Complains about every small issue, derailing class a bit. Don't take.
The class was a dumpster fire. Information was on another site for no reason, lectures were slide-based with no slide downloads. The exams review was the modules, and modules told you to look at the textbook. Exams were complicated homework questions with conceptual garbage and graded harshly. I passed all calc/diff and did worse here. DO NOT TAKE.
I got As in all calculus and difficult stats courses with no issues; however, his class is on a completely different level. His format was to read off of slideshows (300+ slides per lecture) and not post them. The quizzes came straight from here and the homework (EZPZ) felt absolutely worthless to do since it did not prepare you for tests.
Lectures were very hard to follow as he would speed through slides, and the layout of the class was confusing. The homework was practically useless as anything in the homework was not in class, nor on quizzes or tests. Quizzes and tests were all conceptual and very hard as most stuff on the quizzes and tests were not defined in class lectures.
Took MAP4484 + MAP4494 as Bio major during COVID. Reasonably challenging; however, continuously working toward comprehension and mastery is rewarded and reflected in grades - points for completion and correctness. Strength of math background major factor of success, but Nevai is always available for questions. Plus, he can be funny and quirky.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS OR THIS PROFESSOR. I cant say enough bad things about my experience. The assignments are incredibly difficult, the professor is absolutely no help, and the material is so difficult. I took this as an elective thinking the subject would be interesting and exciting. I was so wrong.
I couldnt even appreciate the class because of how hard the professor made it to learn. I reached out multiple times looking for help and got none. He treated it like a graduate course the whole time and assumed it was your only class. Worst experience of my life I with I could get my money back. AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL
Probably the most time-consuming classes I've taken in college. The homework assignments are challenging, and you *will* fail if you wait until the last minute. Despite the workload, I loved the class. The material is really interesting, and Nevai was happy to answer any questions I had. The class is basically all math, for you biology students.
He made syllabus quiz 40 questions. He puts random lines/numbers over assigned readings making them illegible. He assigned two text books that are mandatory. He made his own site you are required to use. Quizzes are worth 5% of grade but if you get 50% avg. on them you fail course even if you have 100 on everything else so a 97.5% could be failing.
I read the reviews before I took the class but decided to ignore them. Don't make the same mistake I did. All of the bad reviews are true, and the good ones are most likely written by him. Avoid this professor at all costs. This is my last semester and I am most likely not getting my math minor because of how needlessly difficult this class is.
If you were to ask someone on the street how knowledgeable Professor Nevai is they will most likely say extremely; however, that does not translate entirely to the lectures. Lectures were somewhat boring. 3 midterms and a final which you have to study from the notes for days and do countless problems to get a good grade. Overall average I guess.
Lectures are exhausting and writing heavy. When grading he focuses on really small details and treats calc1 as an analysis class, which is fine if he was more clear about what he expects us to do(he isn't) but his exams aren't difficult once you get used to his style. Curves because more people fail. Study his notes, do homework, and you'll be fine
He is quick to respond to any questions but his answers not helpful at all. His homework is awful and the way he grades it is NOT FAIR AT ALL. Don't take this course with him.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! Too many bad things to say. Seems he doesn't care about student's education. He quit doing zoom meetings 1/3 through the semester, but recommends to come to class. He goes as far as to drag a chair to keep the door open DURING an exam to "keep air flowing" and is so worried about COVID but doesn't allow you to take it online.
Made Linear Algebra a cakewalk. Didn't even need to read the textbook; his lectures were more than enough to get me through the homework and midterms. Has weekly quizzes but they're open book/note so they're really just homework assignments. And he's very helpful in office hours. Just show up to class, pay attention, take notes, and do the homework
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. He gives 30 question quizzes times for 25 minutes. His study guides are very unhelpful in studying for tests. He is a very difficult grader and always finds a way to take off points even when you get the right answer. Don't take this professor.
My homework took several hours to complete. Often I would write fifteen pages of work, in as much detail as possible, and once I got points taken off because the scanned file exceeded five megabytes, which did not follow his criteria. He graded only a small fraction of the work I did and was extraordinarily picky. Lectures were lengthy and boring
Overall the course material did not seem difficult, however Dr. Nevai graded assignments based on only a few aspects of large homework problems, which was not representative of the course material. The weekly homework assignments, coupled with weekly quizzes and discussion posts made this course extremely tedious.
Took this class last year, but my first review got removed a year after I posted it. Nevai acts irritated whenever you ask him a question and he has to reexplain anything to you, very condescending person. Made this course unnecessarily difficult and stressful.
Densely packed course with a ton of exams and quizzes. Notes are posted online for a limited time and are very in depth. Large amount of time in between homeworks. Appreciated how professor Nevai attempted to answer my random, tangentially related questions. Main drawback for me was graded attendance and graded in class participation in activities.
Summer course C. His recorded lectures and textbook readings were necessary, and his weekly homework made you apply learned ideas in a fashion he may not have shown you yet. Get ready to be creative; If you're stumped he always has office hours and is willing to show you how to solve adjacent or similar problems to anything you're stuck on. v cool.
Don't do it, listen to the other reviews. His "Lectures" are him literally reading a google slides document and doesn't explain ANYTHING. Quizzes are 1 minute PER QUESTION. It feels like he wants everyone to drop/withdrawal or just fail the class. Exams make up 75% of your whole grade. Again don't do it even if it's your only option.
Please do yourself a favor and don't take professor Nevai. His lectures are extremely boring and come straight form the textbook. He makes the class extremely conceptual even though it shouldn't be, and the other professors don't teach it conceptually. The exams are unreasonably hard and solely conceptual. DONT TAKE HIM!
I gave this professor a 1 star review because of his lectures. They are the most boring and unhelpful lectures I have ever seen. All he does is read through a PPT... there is no explanation of the thought process and his commentating on the material is useless. This is my first time feeling completely disengaged from a calculus class.
Took online. If you are even slightly busy I highly advise against taking this class unless you have time on your hands. Doesn't do announcements so midterms may just sneak up on you. Lots and lots to memorize. Do yourself a favor and take it in person, even if that means waiting a semester.
Inarguably the most burdensome class i've taken in my three years at the university. Lectures were a must as you will fail the class simply from having under an 80% in attendance. On top of that the lectures were useless as he just reads off slides which you could easily do at home. Furthermore tests were about completely conceptual. Do not take!
Definitely the worst professor I've ever had. Doesn't provide you with anything you can't do yourself. Straight up reads off a slide and calls it teaching, providing no further necessary details/explanations. He gate-keeps just about everything from students, simple questions asking what might be on the exam are met with cryptic responses.
Enrolled in his section of calc 3 as last resort. Lecture videos are literally an audiobook of the textbook. After exam 1 covered stuff not yet taught, I went to his office hours. He was very dismissive & told me that I needed to just study more Course is designed to fail students. Don't take his class no matter what. Run don't walk from Nevai
This course is completely disappointing. As someone who values education, this course was just taught so poorly with little care. Lectures had slides with all the information we needed but math should not be learned this way. Its extremely difficult and time consuming with exams designed for you to have to know every single detail from the lectures
Class was so bad I made this account. Nothing in this class helps you build an intuition. Everything is conceptual, little application, and explained horribly. The textbook/homework are through third party and not representative of test material. Attendance is mandatory even though he just reads off the slides. He locks class notes after some time
He really goes in dept on the material and for the last 30ish minutes of the class he groups everyone up and has us all practice and then goes around and helps us all with the practice problems this practice is super helpful for the exams. Yes he is cryptic with exam questions but he is a good professor overall.
Understand a lot of where the bad reviews are coming from (especially the condescending parts) but I liked this course. Was online and was able to work at my own pace. Lectures were dense and contained everything needed to know. Quizzes were VERY detailed and note taking was essential. Exams were almost entirely conceptial but so were lectures
His lectures were very boring, and the course material is super in-depth which can be a good thing, however, it is overwhelming for the final. On top of the already immense amount of material you need to review for the finals, he doesn't keep up his lectures after about 5 weeks, so you need to review with the textbook, which is not as in-depth.
I took MAC2313 online and had to withdrawal from the class pretty early in the semester due to personal reasons. His quizzes and homework were very reasonable, although not much time to finish quizzes. I sent a couple emails to him and he was very caring and respectable. The class is hard though and will require a lot of your time!
Pros: - Always willing to help and expand on the material - In-class activities to practice - Very nice & quick to respond to emails Cons: - Lectures are a fast walkthrough of the slides - Slides are posted as videos and unpublished over time - In-class activities are not posted online - Exams are weighted a lot - Fair bit of theory in exams
Required 80% attendance grade, 60% average on quizzes, and 60% average on homework. Weekly quizzes based solely on lectures. 2 Midterms and a cumulative final, both based solely on lectures. Uploads his lectures notes but will delete them after a month. If you take good notes and are diligent, tests are easy and fair.
Extremely time consuming and difficult course, but despite the material, Dr. Nevai was a great professor. Lectures are regurgitations of posted slides. Exams are hard but not weighted much. Final is a 15 page single-spaced thesis project you write through the semester, which is hard if you pick something you don't find interesting. Would take again
Not a good professor. Exams were not structured how he said they would be and does not give a fair amount of partial credit. If possible take a different professor!
While the homework and quizzes and easy and forgiving, there is a large amount every week which can become quiet stressful with work from other classes, balance it out with a lighter workload class. The tests are memory exams, and there is a lot to remember with the final being cumulative. The final was weighed to account for this but it's a lot.
Need 80% attndce to pass. Weekly HWs thru MyLab, due Weds or Fri, abt 40 questions/week. Lectures are very clear, answers questions thoroughly. Posts lectures as vids, deletes after exam, posts again before final. Must follow his lecture methods on exams or 0 pts. Go to class & understand his lecture methods and you'll do great. Exams are very fair
The lectures are boring and not engaging. The instructor flips through slides quickly and doesn't perform the work himself as a walkthrough. He is very strict about the use of arbitrary variables, if you use n when he taught m it's graded as incorrect. This rigidity hinders the learning process and makes understanding the material challenging.
Does not teach well.
His class is heavily exam based. He does move a bit fast, though the class itself covers a lot of information. If you have a question, he does answer and explain, and he will get you an answer if he doesn't have one yet. He teaches off slides, but he will draw out problems if he feels he needs to or if someone asks. The class is hard, but possible.
The class was a real challenge, but using tools like Unstuck study along with the textbook helped me get through it. Lectures can be dull, so staying engaged is key. If you're willing to put in the work, you can succeed in this course.
Teaching wise he is not bad, he answers questions quite effectively and isn't bad at explaining. He does grade heavy though.
Just watch Organic Chem Tutor before quizzes and your likely to understand the material and pass the class. Also practice as much as you can and do the Knewton Alta's, don't cheat them. Tests are graded insanely hard and will take half of a problems credit away for simple and tiny errors. Ignore lectures, attendance counts, & study on your own.
Almost lost my scholarship after taking this course. I will say that it's definitely possible to pass if you can teach yourself, but I was dealing with a Title IX case throughout the semester that inhibited my performance, and despite giving documentation of it, he wouldn't let me make anything up. He told me to be prepared to fail and didn't help.
Good Professor. Enjoyed the Class. Never read the textbook but his lectures were great to cover all the material. Just make sure you understand his lectures and the hw and youll be good
Andrew is a wonderful professor and will help you achieve all the successes you could possibly want in life. His notes are all PowerPoints but he does a great job explaining, and he has weekly online quizzes and homeworks that aren't difficult. The tests are pretty chill if you study his panopto videos and he's a nice grader. Andrew is my goat!
Tests are based on your memory and off theory in his lecture ppt video only, with each being 40-60 slides on average. Assigns homework that won't prepare you for tests. Gives unclear guidelines for what must be studied, resulting in you needing to study ALL slide material to be test ready. Made this 3 credit class feel like 5.
Horrible lectures, admits that he doesn't actually know differential equations. Has (repeatedly) asked random students to explain his own work to him because he "can't remember" what he meant when he wrote it. Will go ballistic if you question him/make a mistake. Threatened the whole class with 40 point deductions if we emailed him with questions.
i can't drop this class cause it's a coreq for another class but this guy is by far the worst professor i think i have ever had. the grading scale is lowkey crazy, and if you don't attend at least 80% of lectures he will give u an F in the class. he also threatened to dock us 40 points from our exam if we emailed him with questions.
Literally take any other professor but him. The exams are based off his lectures that are posted in video format and missing the in class questions. The Exams has 22Q but almost half the exam points come from the last 2 FRP questions. Exams are also only 50min. If you use YouTube to study you may lose points if your work isn't his way of solving.
He's a solid lecturer, goes through enough examples in class to feel prepared for exams. Required attendance, if you miss 80% of classes its an auto fail. Online weekly short quizzes and online Pearson homework. Exams were tough due to time constraints but not impossible. He can be very blunt at times but was always willing to answer questions.
Has PowerPoint lectures, which I tend to struggle with, but was very good about explaining the steps on each slide. Moves fast, but there is a lot of content within the class, so it makes sense. A little slow with returning exam grades, but most other assignments are graded right away. Answers questions in class, wants you to succeed, keep up tho!
DE is a hard class, there's no easy way out. He simplifies the concepts to a certain extent, and the lectures are fast-paced, but are useful. He is a tough grader, but the questions follows the same pattern as the ones on the PowerPoint, so just go over those. Just study hard and put in the work, you'll be fine. Don't listen to the fearmongers.
I feel like people are too harsh. If you pay attention in lecture it's not hard to get a good grade. He explicitly tells you what to learn and things you shouldn't bother with. His notes are great for reviewing. Don't bother taking your own notes during lecture, he goes fast just listen. He's seems strict but he lowkey chill.
He's particular about how he runs his class that comes off strict but it is absolutely not unreasonable. If you do what you're supposed to do, you'll pass this class. His powerpoints are clear and gives you everything you need to understand content. Exams are more than fair, just study his powerpoints and practice.
Ask questions and attend office hours. The syllabus is scary and should be treated as such but if you attend class and study lecture slides and quizzes, you will pass. He is fair and understanding.
I like the way his class is organized, I feel like he gives a fair amount of time to complete each of the homework. He does appreciate any questions in lecture. He's pretty strict in that you have to follow the methods shown in lecture and are tested on them. But, his tests are extremely fair and easy to get A's on if you study. Follow the slides.
He is very intimidating and seems quite strict but in reality, he is actually very nice and likes when students ask questions that show they are paying attention and connect between topics. The homework he posts kind of sucks. His exams are fair and look the exact same as the problems on the powerpoint.
Avoid this professor at all cost. He is not a good professor. Condescending at times. I enjoyed the class and found DE interesting, but Nevai made the class dreadful and more difficult than it actually is. Several classmates delivered complaints to the dean about him. No practice test. No cheatsheet. Homework is not like exams. Hard grader.
He was ok. Didn't really care for how he taught the class, it was all just reading off of powerpoint slides for 2 hours straight twice a week. He never solved a problem live, as they were all presolved on the powerpoint and we would just get to stare at them. Exams were remarkably difficult, but doable. He just barely gives partial credit.
He can't teach. Literally reads straight from the textbook and copies everything onto the board. Despite this, attendance is mandatory. Don't waste your time with him.
Grading criteria is unclear, feedback comes too late and there is a gimmick to the class. if you fail to obtain enough points in specific categories, you auto fail. This ought not to be a problem, but the homework, the formative assessments, are graded harshly and on secret criteria. TLDR pedagogically awful, designed to reduce grades and fail you
I was going through something personal while taking this class and admittedly, I would've passed this class had I not been going through it. You can teach yourself with the material he gives you, but he comes off a little rude. When I approached him for help with material, he said "you have to prepare yourself to fail". I would avoid him if you can
Incredibly difficult and unrelated homework problems with ridiculously tough grading. Averaged low 70s on the homework assignments whereas my exam average was a 91, despite putting 8-9 hours into each homework assignment. Required attendance for lectures which consist of Dr. Nevai reading and writing lines straight from the textbook.
I was not a fan of the requirements of passing the class, min grades for HW, quizzes, and attendance, but he is thorough in explaining the topic. Exams usually linked more with class examples. I wish the HW was more relevant to the quizzes and exams though.
Do not miss lectures, 1 lecture missing and you don't understand anything till next test. He is test heavy based on the lectures, not really the book. He doesn't allow for any extensions. Take with caution, it was a 4 credit course, do not take with other heavy courses, ie calc(s), DE, thermo. Also had tests scheduled same day as other math tests.
He is one of the best professors I've had at UCF! His notes are so clear, and his exams are so fair; if you attend class, write down his notes, and study them, you should have no problem doing well on the exams. The material can be tough to grasp on its own, but taking the time to do the homework and study his notes will set you up for success.
His lectures are pretty good and reflect what will be on exams But he is an INCREDIBLY strict grader and his exams are way more difficult and conceptual than it needs to be. Very vague on what will be on the exams. Pretty decent exam curve and there's some extra credit, but exams are worth a huge chunk of your grade
Attendance isn't mandatory, but you should show up to every lecture if you want to do well. His lectures were extremely helpful and easy to follow. I didn't need to read the textbook at all because he teaches clearly and methodically.
