This class is very interesting! Overall the workload can be extreme, but other than that the professor is very understanding is willing to work with his students.
Great professor very interesting class. However, if your taking this as a core just take something else because its a hard to make an A.
Queer studies was the only course I actually looked forward to attending. Be ready for a lot of reading, but it is interesting reads discussed in class. An assignment per week, the midterm wasn't too bad if you know the material and studied. An observation project and a film project. TONS OF EXTRA CREDIT! He's passionate which makes it fun!
All around, a very interesting and engaging class that requires you to think. However, be prepared for the strenuous amount of reading and writing for homework assignments. Occasional pop quizzes so make sure you're up to speed on the topic of discussion.
Makes you work for the A in the class but is extremely helpful and understanding when it comes to the struggles of college. Almost always available which makes getting help ver convenient.
dr pegoda is a great guy, and he loves what he does. if you don't want to work for your grade, though, don't take the class. he does his best to teach a lot of material in one semester, so it comes with a lot of reading and essays. a little much for an introductory course, but it is well worth it if you're interested. NOT AN EASY A!!!!
Really great teacher, he really cares about his students and you will actually learn something from this class. We have homework but it's actually interesting stuff that he makes us read.
Hard to get an A in this class.
Interesting class, be sure to open minded. Do the readings, there's some pop quizzes about it in class!! Participation is important. Workload is a little heavy sometimes though.
He is very focused on reading the materials and thats where he bases most of his material off of. I liked that he cleared up a lot of misconceptions, but the amount of reading turned me off from this class.
Great with feedback and questions, very understanding in case of emergency or stress situations. Loved the class would not hesitate to take it again.
Dr. Pegoda is uniquely concerned for his students. In my entire college experience I have never had a more approachable professor that actually cared about my struggles- even ones not pertaining specifically to queer studies.
Great professor, i learned so much in this class, and he makes it easy for everyone to get an A by letting you revise and resubmit essays
He likes to interact with the class, and he tries to make the class easier for the students as well.
Show up, do the reading and assignments and you will pass. He grades a little heavy on quality of writing but that is appreciated. Be prepared to discuss readings and ideas. Pop quizzes happen as well. Be prepared for a heavy amount of writing assignments though. This course had 2 per week for the first half of the semester.
Very kind, helpful, and accessible professor. Gives a lot of reading in his courses, but most of it is interesting and helpful subject matter. Get ready for lots of writing assignments and pop quizzes; none of them should be too hard. Going to class isn't 100% required, but very strongly recommended. Class is mostly discussion based.
It's my core course, and I spend my entire time for this class, to be honest. But Dr. Pegoda is a great professor that I have ever met. He teaches with passion. If something goes wrong, come to his office then talk to him! Get an extra credit and feel better lol!!
Do not take this class just because you're queer and you think you already know it all! This is not a fun elective, it is a very demanding and everything heavy course. This was the most homework I have ever had for a class. You will write more papers for this class than for an English class. Made friends in this class, but i do not recommend him.
Dr. Pegoda is a VERY understanding professor who genuinely cares for his students more than the workload. At the end of the semester, we had the option of completing our debate project or scratch the assignment completely, (we chose to go through with the debate because it was fun and engaging.) VERY ACCESSIBLE OUTSIDE OF CLASS. Take him if you can
Dense heavy readings that can be overwhelming at times. If you attempt to do the reading and come to class, you should be fine.
No textbook, but assigns multiple books to read along with response assignments weekly. As long as you read, show up and participate you will do well. Rewards effort. I enjoy his classes.
Loved Dr. P, he's super fun and caring. If you're taking this for an easy A, don't even bother signing up... And get ready to read articles on top of articles. No textbook required, except there are a few books and movies that are required for the class. Loads of extra credit assignments given!
He is a good professor and takes time for each individual student if you willing to learn.
SOOOO much reading oh my god! Also a lot of "busy work" that is unnecessary also. However, you can learn a lot in this class and if you're a member of the LGBTQ community its sort of like a safe space. The lectures require your opinion on the readings so be ready to discuss. If not he will call on you! In the end class was ok but wouldn't recommend
Dr.P, HAS BEEN AMAZING. Get ready to read! Don't slack off. Don't miss class and stay on tops of all your assignments. He is very clear on what he expects! You won't regret taking him!
Dr. Pegoda is really good at giving feedback and gave us many opportunities to pass the class. I would consider that the class is a easy A as long as you take every opportunity you get. Very good teacher non of the less.
There is a lot of reading to be done for this class, but it can be done with good time management. Lots of opportunity for extra credit and fair grader on major papers. Do not be late to the class since most of the quizzes start promptly at the start of class.
Best professor I've had in all of my 3 years of college! Has each students best interest, thoroughly shares knowledge, always wanting to help.
Dr. Pegoda is an inspiration, an institution of knowledge in this subject. He expects the best from his students which means you have got to read , read and read some more. Lots of assignments but you get used to it and it actually helps improving your writing skills. He is always available for his students. Lots of extra credit opportunities.
Very heavy on the reading
Very interesting subjects but the readings are super long Not a blow off class
Super helpful! Class is always interesting. There is a lot of reading but most of the time it's worth it. Coming to class is a must because there is almost always a class discussion about anything that you've read
The class requires attendance, participation, and a good amount of engagement with the material. Ample extra credit is offered and Dr. Pegoda is always willing to help. Because of the emphasis on class discussions, you will receive many chances to take part in lively dialogues with diverse and thoughtful classmates. Bring an open mind and cupcakes!
Very good teacher. Take advantage of the extra credit because he gives out alot. Also stay on on top of his assignments you will be fine. Tough grader, got to work for your A.
I loved taking one of his classes, he really cares about his students and will do as much as he can to help students succeed (always has office hours, extra credit, etc). Just know that you will have a lot of assignments, but they will all help you learn. Easy to do well if you put in the work.
Very good teacher. A lot of work to put in to get a good grade. Very detailed class discussions. Dr. Pegoda is a very understanding person who is always open to answer questions and work through essays with you.
Dr. Pegoda gives a lot of extra credit opportunity, but also a lot of homework. The workload is around 2 papers (each 1-2 pages long) plus reading assignments (25pgs average) per week. He also has amazing lectures, gives good advice.
Dr. Pegoda is a kind, fun, and intelligent professor who knows exactly what he is teaching. He makes sure that there are clear guild lines that if you follow then you will easily get a good grade in this class.
Just revise your essays until you get an A. If you want to pass, then you will. It's not that hard.
The class is simple, the professor is "him," and attendance is mandatory for some reason.
I would say this professor's strongest suit was his ability to be flexible outside of class. He would also send updates through email and announce when he will not be able to show up due to his own issues but still made sure to place a student's questions and thoughts above anything else.
The Professor is funny. Can be passive aggressive at times. Overall good course
Dr. Pegoda is a very good teacher with great attention to detail. One of his strong suits is his flexibility and how seriously he takes his job. Class is difficult if you do not apply yourself but plenty of extra credit opportunities to make up for it.
Great professor, just make sure you are ready to read. Homework articles are 25-35 pages long & require you to read deeper into the text w/ your personal analysis. Gives you multiple chances to resubmit your essay and has very open office hours to review it with you. With the extra credit opportunities, an A is possible. You just have to work 4 it.
Lots of reading but not overwhelming and definitely worth it
Very good professor, very understanding and gets everyone involved. Just be ready to read but at least he picks interesting topics and books to go over.
Dr. Pegoda is such a great professor, the University of Houston is lucky to have such a gem. You will have to read and write- but thats why we are in college, right? He cares about his students and will work and accommodate any needs that you require. He wants us to do well and will give you such positive affirmations . Sign up for a great exp...
Great teacher and very understanding! Although, he likes to mark attendance very strictly so be there when need be!
Not a Blow-off Class. A lot of reading. If you don't read you will be lost during the class discussions.
Dr Pegoda is very passionate about what he teaches, he makes class engage in conversation. There are a lot of assigned readings but they are usually very interesting. Extra credit is offered and he grades pretty quickly.
He gives out a lot of hmwk, so make sure you have a nice amount of time to study... make sure you read the blackboard packets because he'll hit you with a pop quiz out of no where overall he's a good instructor
This is the third class I've taken with him and I loved it. Be prepared to work and to be inspired and have your views change on certain things. He was a big influence on why i changed my minor. I would recommend him to everyone this class is not an easy A but if you do what he ask you will pass.
Dr. Pegoda was an amazing professor, one of my favorite courses I've taken throughout college. My biggest issue with the course is just the amount of reading he expects students to do outside of class. This class was easily 90% of my workload this semester due to his readings, but if you just skim the content you can get by with a good grade.
Professor Pegoda does a great job of allowing actual learning to occur. He allows you to fix your mistakes on major graded work, although he is a relatively tough grader. He takes attendance and there is usually an assignment due as homework.
DR. Pegoda is an amazing professor that is very knowledgable in Queer studies, if you need the credit be sure to take his classes. That being said, get ready for heavy reading and assignments over those readings.
Overall this class is not tough, but the work load is overwhelming. Lots of reading, projects, and discussions. Offers a ton of extra credit though. I would only recommend this class if its taken alone.
You have to do the assigned work. For this online course this is weekly DB posts and responses to others, along with additional DB threads to participate in through out the semester. If you do the assigned reading and assignments with effort you will do fine. This is an honest reward for effort professor.
There is a lot of reading and discussion posts but he is fair and always grades fast. He offers extra credit and is willing to work with you as long as you are doing your best and showing that you are trying. He is passionate about his classes and always make sure we are doing well with the work and assignments. He is just a good human.
Dr P is very helpful when you need it and is always willing to give extra help when you have questions. His lectures are interesting and he keeps your attention through class. Discussions are fun and he helps you understand the terms as you go. He offers extra credit and is a quick grader. I enjoyed his classes!
This class is extremely interactive and not boring at all. Dr. Pegoda is great!
Loved it! Would take again
He's an amazing professor. He's willing to help students get an A if they're interested. He makes the class fun by including everyone and always has a positive attitude. You will have to read A LOT but it's not impossible. He doesn't grade too hard and course is deff passable. Totally recommended.
As a male student, I didn't know what to expect from Introduction to Women Studies. I thought that we were going to learn about the history of women's marches. It was far anything but that, Dr. Pegoda's teaching, although a lot of work and effort on reading and analyzing, gave me a new perspective on being a more respectful human being.
Great teacher.
Dr. Pegoda is reading & writing heavy, but most of the assignments involve, at least in part, student's opinions & responses to the material, which eases the writing process. Dr. P is very sympathetic to student's needs provided they make a concerted effort & contact Dr. P early if there are any issues. You'll learn a lot & have fun doing it!
Dr. Pegoda is a great teacher and I learned a lot from his Women Studies course. The class requires a lot of reading and writing, but the subjects are always interesting. I would definitely recommend his class.
By far one of the best professors I've ever had (and I'm a senior). He sees his students as people and treats them as such. He facilitates an amazing classroom culture and environment. He inspires a passion for learning. Many of his students take him for multiple classes. He gives a lot of freedom in assignments so you learn what you love!
You absolutely have to get the textbook for this course. Much of what is talked about in class comes from the assigned readings. Highly suggested that you complete the readings before class as well.
Dr. Pegoda is one of the best professors at UH. Dr. P cares about his students. The class has an interactive learning style so be prepared to participate. The course does involve a bit of reading from the textbook but they're all related to class discussions. (reading isn't too bad if you're thinking about Grad School). Would take again!
Dr. Pegoda is great, but be prepared to read multiple lengthy articles and be quizzed on them EVERY class. The only thing I did not like was the work load. Luckily, everything is pretty interesting. 2 quiz grades are dropped, there's a semester project, 2 papers, and a semester exam.
Expect a lot of reading and writing a semester project and quizzes every class day but he is a very caring professor. Also very interesting class learned a lot about the GLBT community
Dr. Pegoda is a very unique professor. He expects a lot from his students so don't take for a blow off class. His classroom is all about truly learning the material and applying content to real life. The class can be difficult because his expectation for weekly papers are not definite. If you don't remember ENG 1, GL. He cares deeply about studen
Phenomenal teacher, just do your homework.
I was able to learn a lot about the LGBT community and womens studies.
The professor cares about the subject, but there is a lot of work involved. There are readings due before every class and quizzes at the start of every class. If you pay attention to class and do the work you should do well in the class. The work itself is not hard, there is just a lot of it.
Very caring, brought the entire class chocolate chunk cookies. Class is fun and informational. A lot of the work is self-study. Provides feedback and information when needed and asked. A lot of the class is discussion-based. Information in the course is new and enlightening and follows current events, trends, and concepts.
Interesting class, you learn a lot. Be ready to read and do lots of homework and papers. Good class for you if you like to share your view on things.
Very caring professor, gives multiple opportunities for extra credit and is very responsive to any questions you have. There is a lot of reading and daily quizzes, but it is a very great class and is great professor to teach it.
Dr. Pegoda is really passionate about what he teaches, and he really wants his students to learn as much as they can. You have to read, talk in class, and consistently work on major papers/projects if you want the A. Other than that, the class environment is very inviting and relaxed, and the course curriculum is great.
There will be lots of readings and writing, but the topics are always very interesting. Dr. Pegoda really cares about his students and understands that people go through things outside of school, so he is very flexible with due dates. You will have to earn the grade you want, but just put your best effort in and youll do fine.
Lots of extra credit opportunities! Class is very interactive and flexible. You will never get bored or sleepy while in it. Dr. Pegoda makes you think outside the box and opens up your mind while discussing societal concepts and issues. Read the articles, come to class, participate, do the quizzes and papers and you'll get an A!
This class is amazing to take. Dr. Pegoda is very understanding, and leaves good feedback, as well as heavily encourages in-class participation. There are assigned readings, but they are very informational and moderate. Quizzes given almost every class meeting, so do the readings, go to class, participate in discussions, and you should be fine.
Dr. Pegoda is such a great and caring professor. He is very undertanding of our struggles, therefore is able to extend deadlines for certain assignments. Theres quizzes over the readings at the beginning of every class, SO ATTEND CLASS. He engages and respects his students greatly. Never hesitates to help anyone. I would definitely take him again!
Great Professor, I would totally take his class again. he is very knowledgeable in his field and ensures that the content material is rich in various perspectives to be as inclusive as possible. he is very caring and funny. Reading is a requirement but honestly the material he provides makes for easy and interesting reads.
Great Professor, just do your work.
DR. Pegoda is a wonderful professor who truly cares about his students and really tries to help them understand the material. He is always available outside of class and is eager to help. If you have the chance to take any of his classes, do it!
Dr. Pegoda's class was my favorite during my first semester at UH. He cares for his students and their success and makes classes fun. Lots of reading, and quizzes at the beginning of each class so attendance is crucial to your grade. If you do your work, you will make an A.
Dr. Pegoda is an amazing, caring professor he really cares about his students, I would totally take him again. He is a very flexible teachers and understands every issue you have during the semester. Reading is a requirement but the topics are so interesting that you will never get bored at any point. TAKE HIS CLASS HE IS JUST AWESOME!!
I would recommend to take Dr. Pegoda's class. In specific, there is reading articles that you have to read before every class and a quiz for every class. No, the quizzes are not hard, read and you'll get good grades. There is A LOT of extra credit opportunities. The class is very interesting overall, and he cares about his students, easy A.
Dr. Pagoda is a great professor who is very passionate about what he teaches. I took this class for a credit but I ended up really enjoying this class. There is a lot of readings and quizzes that are taken at the beginning of each class but as long as you do the readings youll be fine. Overall, I would definitely recommend this class.
Great teacher, challenging but in a good way. He cares about his students and their well being so if something is going on and you need help, he's there for you. There is a lot of reading but the discussions in class are worth it.
Get ready to read because you won't pass the class if you don't read! He is pretty clear on the syllabus, but he will clarify things for you if you are still confused about something. He makes the class interesting especially with the class discussions over what we read. He's also understanding and shows he truly cares about his students well being
Dr. Pegoda's teaching style for POLS 3396 was discussion based. The first half of the semester, we had two books and short articles for weekly readings that were the basis for the pop quizzes and the weekly response papers (3-5 pages). The second half focused on the final paper and student presentations. Not a hard class if kept up with readings.
don't take if ur not a reader tonssssss of reading
I really love this class! Every day that we will have lectures I left the class with something new in my brain. There is a lot of readings, so each day there is class there is a quiz on the reading assigned. Those readings were interesting and they always taught me something new.
Mostly class discussions based off the readings. There's no textbook it's a PDF he gives you. The reading is interesting and thought provoking. He provides a lot of extra credit opportunities. You'd have to really try to fail. He's really thoughtful, and caring especially about helping students. If you have any questions he's there to help.
Dr Pegoda is awesome!!! I would definately recommend him for any of his class. I really enjoyed the group discussions that we have during class.
If you aren't a strong writer be ready to improve! He expects students to do the reading and the work. Be ready to contribute in class discussions. He WILL call on you if you don't talk much. Gives some pop quizzes here and there. His classes typically come with a semester project/paper. Cares about his students but won't just gift you a grade.
Dr. Pegoda is a really fantastic professor, but be ready to dedicate plenty of time to homework and reading. The class is really fun but it is pretty time consuming.
Dr. Pegoda is a wonderful professor who truly cares about his students. Dr. Pegoda's class requires lots of reading, but if you are genuinely interested in the course material, then they are great. There are no exams in the class but only papers that are 4 pages or longer. Gives a decent amount of extra credit opportunities as well.
Great teacher. Lots of reading and it is mandatory to go to class and read for the daily quizzes.
Dr. P. is the most caring person you will ever meet. He is very passionate about teaching and it shows. He understands that every student is different and is willing to accommodate if you need assistance. Many students take him for multiple courses, so that alone goes to show how great he is. His classes are challenging but well worth it.
Be prepared for weekly readings, and daily quizzes. As long as you read articles you should do fine on quizzes. Participation based class, very interesting. Dr. Pegoda is very open to discussion and available for students. 2 papers, a semester project and a final semester exam in form of a paper as well. Gives some extra credit.
if you happen to not read the weekly readings youll most likely not do well on the daily quizzes. Class participation is encouraged. Theres three or four papers not including all the extra credit papers that are optional. Overall very interesting class, I think everyone should take it.
Dr. Pegoda is arguably one of the best professors at UH thus far. He makes sure to let everyone know hes available before/after/during class. The quizzes are optional but for attendance points. Good reading! Great feedback on papers! Caring, honest, open, funny!
He is the most compassionate professor Ive ever had. He treats you like a human and is willing to take feedback and recommendations. Be prepared to start questioning your sense of self because he will make you reconsider what you think you know about YOU. Super fun and deep conversations. Bring your tissues.
Dr. Pegoda is an excellent professor who is very passionate. The class is a great setting and is mostly through open discussions. Although attendance isn't mandatory, there are quizzes each lecture day. Quizzes are based on weekly readings and as long as you read the assignments you will be fine.
Dr. Pegoda is an amazing professor that is very passionate about the subject. He is very understanding and willing to work to your needs. There are daily readings! YOU WILL NEED TO READ! There are quizzes everyday in the beginning of class, about 13 minutes. Definitely recommend!
Dr. Pegoda is an amazing teacher who is always there for his students. He has a great teaching style and is very interactive with the class as a whole. He does have a lot of criteria to teach but he makes it fun yet informative. I would recommend him to anyone interested in Womens Studies/Queer Theory.
Professor Pegoda cares about his students. He will make you work for your A, and will not give you for free a grade that you have not really earned. Nevertheless, he provides ample opportunities through extra credit to achieve a high grade. He seems to be a lovely human being and he is a good professor.
Dr. Pegoda's love for this subject is really infectious! He is such a fair teacher and gives students every opportunity to succeed in the class. There is A LOT of reading, but this helps students understand the material better! It's not too bad, it takes maybe two hours out of your week max. This is such an engaging class! Take it!!!
Wonderful and well rounded instructor. I enjoyed the content discussed in class as well as the assignments honestly. The readings are a little demanding but they are not that bad. Quizzes every class for the most part, so be sure to study the terms discussed in class. Dr. Pegoda does such a wonderful job of creating a safe space for all students.
Loved this class. Pegoda is an incredible prof and gives you a very strong foundation for continuing with the wgss major or minor. Their class involved a lot of discussion, reading, and writing. You really have to think but its fun!
Amazing teacher, took for womens studies. Couldnt find a better teacher, to bad all teachers cant be like Dr. Pegoda. He cares about his students to the fullest and always there if you need help. Such a fun class i will definitely recommend.
Dr. Pegoda made my first semester at UH amazing. He's such a caring professor that truly tries to sympathize with his students and completely understands that we have lives outside of school. He is incredibly easy to talk to and has really interesting views on the patriarchy. I've loved his class and have thoroughly enjoyed what we've learned.
Dr. Pegoda is a great prefessor. The class is not that hard, but you do have quizzes every class over articles that you were assigned to read. Theyre super simple, nothing to worry about. There were like 3 major papers and 1 project, and a lot of extra credit opportunities so if you miss a quiz because you didnt attend class, you can make it up
Do your work and show up to class always come to him about your essays and he will give you good feedback on how you can make it better . He really wants to see everyone do well .
Dr. Pegoda is one of the best professors I have ever had. Great teacher and extremely caring for his students. There is a quiz at the start of each class, but if you read the articles and watch the movies for the week, you will be just fine! The "lectures" are actually class discussions, and are always a joy to be a part of. The class is very fun!
Dr. Pegoda is such a great and caring professor and his class will open your mind. You have articles to read before every class and a quiz about the articles. The quizzes aren't hard they are mostly just about your thoughts on the articles. There are 3 essays and a lot of extra credit. You will definitely pass if you show up and do all your work.
Honestly, what a great professor. After the first lecture I left thinking this class was bs, by that I mean that the content that was being taught was more opinion based rather than fact. Yet, I ended up falling in love with the content. This man let me free from the ignorance i was lost in. Oh, and the class work is easy lol.
Seriously one of the best professors I've had at UH, he is super understanding & gives SO MANY extra credit opportunities! His lectures are amazing & as long as you follow along in the class with readings, you will be fine! The class itself was amazing & didn't at all feel like class, it felt like a discussion with my friends!
Dr. Pegoda is a great professor. He really cares about his students and always tries to make his students feel comfortable with course materials. No final exam. 3 papers, 1 presentation, and everyday quizzes (worth 35% course grade. But don't worry, he will drop 2 lowest quizzes and not every day we had quizzes)
Dr. Pegoda is a phenomenal professor and is truly caring and understanding of each and every students time. Dr. Pegoda is very flexible and will give great feedback whenever you ask for it! Take the class if you enjoy great lectures and an interesting subject!
Excellent teacher. Makes you work for it but is always willing to provide feedback and meet for office hours.
you have to earn your grade in his class. But overall worth it he's a very direct and helpful professor.
He's an amazing professor that I greatly enjoyed. It was an engaging class and I really felt like I learned a lot.
Dr. Pegoda is caring and good professor. Be prepared to read and show up to class.
Professor Pegoda, is hard to beat in terms of sweetness and concern for students. He is open to ideas and loves to discuss questions with students to help clarify and educate them. There are reading based quizzes every class period, but they are not hard if you read. So yeah. Have fun! P.S. He does provide extra credit opportunities. TAKE THEM.
The lectures are focused on the readings assigned, but no textbook required. He compiles the readings in a PDF that you can access. A couple of essays, daily quizzes on the readings (for attendance) and one major project. He's very understanding and flexible on deadlines if you need more time. Definitely one of my favorite professors.
Professor Pegoda is honestly the most understanding instructor you would ever have. You know he is one of the very best, because his interests resides in your understanding of the content more than you actually scoring a particular grade on assignments. Very flexible. Make sure you do all the readings and you should be good!
Dr. Pegoda is an amazing professor! He is very caring and understanding. He's the first professor I ever had at UH that seemed to truly understand that a lot of students have a lot going in their lives... He gave us extensions on papers multiple times throughout the semester. He is very responsive via email and easily accessible during office hours
He has extra credit opportunities but theres a paper due each Saturday. There were like 10 papers, attendance is mandatory he counts you absent if youre late .
Dr. Pegoda is a fantastic instructor. He is very informative, understanding, and laid-back. Attendance, participation, and reading assigned materials are very important to passing his classes.
Great professor, really cares about his students, gets along with them better than any other professor ive had. SO MUCH READING!!! usually its pretty interesting, some weeks you can get the gist in class discussions, but theres 2-page responses due each week. attendance in relatively mandatory, no textbooks but many books and movies(most are free).
He's a great professor!!! He cares a lot about his students and is willing to sit and talk with you. There is a lot of writing involved but he is there to help you and makes sure you have what you need to get an A. There is no textbook required, and most of the movies are free and easy to access. I would definitely take this teacher again!
Dr. Pegoda is a unique professor. He is caring, passionate about teaching, and wants his student to have a learning experience after completing his class. Reading in this class is a requirement.
Dr. Pegoda is a very understanding nice human. He understands students have lives outside of class and will accommodate you if you need extension on deadlines. Every class day there is reading homework which can be a few articles or it could be 15, so do not put it off last minute, because class is basically just discussion over the articles.
This professor is one of the most caring/understanding professors you will come across. Class is not lecture based but instead discussion based over the assigned reading material. Quizzes everyday based on the assigned readings as well so attendance is important. All assigned articles/movies/videos are very interesting.
Dr. Pegoda is a great teacher. This class with this professor has been the most educational experience I've had since in college. You have to read to be prepared for the quizzes every class period but they're good reads and applicable to topics you learn in class.
Dr. Pegoda is a wonderful professor and cares more about their students than any other professor I've encountered. There is a lot of critical thinking and writing involved, but as long as you come to class, participate, and take advantage of extra credit opportunities and Dr. Pegoda's offers of assistance, you are almost guaranteed to succeed.
Dr. Pegoda is a great professor! Just be ready for a lot of reading because there are quizzes every class based off of what you read. Also, attendance is very important in order to succeed. Overall, the class is very interesting and all of the readings make it worthwhile.
This class should be mandatory. Dr. Pegoda is the best professor I have ever had. They are caring, understanding, hilarious, & overall the best person. The epitome of the perfect professor. There are a few (amazing) books you have to read, no textbooks, a few movies and episodes, lots of quizzes, E.C., and a few papers. & the best kind of person!
This class is easy as long as you keep up with the reading assignments. The professor is very willing to help you out in office hours.
You definitely need to go to class and keep up with readings. If you do that the class is interesting and not very difficult. The professor has extra credit opportunity and is available for help regularly.
Dr. Pegoda is an awesome professor! I took him for an Intro to GLBT studies course and it he made it really fun. He doesn't do lectures, but instead gives you readings to read before class, start the class off with a quiz on those readings, and then the rest of the class, you discuss what those readings are about. He provides the readings/ textbook
The class is very enjoyable, show up and participate. You will do fine, yes there is a lot of reading but it is very enjoyable. Everyone should really take this course so they can know the proper terms. I enjoyed this class and it helped with my writing skills
Wonderful professor would take this class again 10/10!
He is a very understanding professor. This is not a blow off class but he makes it very interesting. worth taking to learn some new things
Very nice and conducts great conversation in class, but seriously it was the hardest class. The grading could be more reasonable.
This class was a lot more work than my other classes, theres quite a bit of reading as well. But, the topics we learned about in this class were rather interesting. Dr. Pegoda is also a very understanding person, and offers extra credit opportunities frequently.
This isn't a difficult class, but it does require a lot of reading. The readings are interesting which make quizzes easy. Also, the amount of papers required seems overwhelming at first but they are pretty straightforward.
Dr. Pegoda is not only well versed and exceptionally good at teaching the course material, but he genuinely cares about his students and does everything he can to help them understand and improve. He is one of the best professors Ive ever had the pleasure of learning from, and I am definitely going to take more classes with him in the future.
BEST PROFESSOR HANDS DOWN. He is both intellectual and passionate for what he teaches and who he teaches it to. I would definitely take again. His class will take hard work and dedication but you will be thankful for it in the end.
hes a great professor who really cares about his subjects and his students. if you need the credit take him if you don't need it take him anyway.
As a business major, I found this class to be very insightful on how an amalgamation of religions have influenced the United States today. Dr. Pegoda does an excellent job of engaging students and ensuring you understand both the reading material and how others largely base their beliefs off of religious values. He is also a very caring individual.
Would definitely recommend this class to anyone! Professor Pegoda loves teaching and cares about his students all the time. The articles that we have to read are very interesting and movies too. The best professor in UH!
Dr. Pegoda is the best professor I've had. The course consists of 3 papers, a project and quizzes based on the readings, so attendance is important. This class is not an easy A since Dr. Pegoda expects a lot from his students only because he wants them to succeed. However, he is also a very caring and understanding professor. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
This class will invite you to have uncomfortable, but important conversations. The material is easy to understand and the readings are interesting. The quizzes are based on your interpretations of the readings . The essays are not difficult. The professor is both caring and understanding, 8-10 EC opportunities were offered during my semester.
I love Dr. Pegoda and loved this class. This class is for everyone and has something to offer all walks of life. The material was interesting and helped me understand the world and culture in a new way. PS Women's Studies is not just for girls I think anyone with an interest in history or culture would highly benefit from taking this course!
Good professor. Explains concepts well and class is enjoyable. Grades are comprised of a few papers, a semester long project, and quizzes in almost every class. There is a lot of reading involved but they're easy to digest. Just make sure you go to class and keep up with the course work.
The class overall is very informative. Lots of outside readings that are mandatory. NOt impossible to get an A but will require lots of effort.
The professor's expectations and goals were for the class were easily met and exceeded if the student is willing to stay diligent in the course readings, participate in class discussions, and frequently asks questions. The material is more theoretical than factual, but it is all very well-represented by the efficiency of the professor. Very Caring.
Hours upon hours of reading assigned The readings repeat the same thing over and over You have to take a quiz each class that covers the readings If you ask him a question, he wont answer it He says its in the syllabus Dont take
Dr. Pegoda is an amazing professor. He's someone I'll be taking classes from again and again. The subjects he teaches on are incredibly nuanced and difficult to grasp and he fully understands this fact. He's always available to help his students outside of class. The course load is a lot, but if you want to learn more about queer studies, take him.
Comparative Creation Myths is a fun course. There is a fair amount of reading and writing, but the pace of the assignments is manageable and Dr. Pegoda will do everything in his power to help you succeed. To do well in the class, you have to show up prepared and ready to participate. Plenty of extra credit opportunities as well.
I enjoyed the class, I just felt as though he was a little close-minded (ironically). He was not willing to hear different opinions from his own which became slightly frustrating. I would still recommend the class but at a point, it became a whining session rather than a learning one. I'm conflicted. Would still recommend, however.
If you want to have a great professor and want to actually learn something about queer studies definitely take this class. Classes are also really fun. There is a lot of in class discussions. Note that this class was a lot of reading and it had 3 long papers and a class project so if you want an easy A look somewhere else.
A huge percentage of class discussion and mini (1-3 pages per reading number assigned) was about LGBTQ+. It was fun at first, until the second week of class. This class became annoying with so much, SO MUCH, political correctness and "blank is this, don't say that way, this is the correct term". I respect the community highly, but can become much.
Overall, Dr Pegoda is a great professor and I really enjoyed his queer studies class. The class is heavily based on readings and quizzes so get ready for that. Also, all of our major assignments besides the semester project is all essays! I just wish that there were more topics that included minorities!
Dr. Pegoda is the best professor I've had at UH. You leave the class truly feeling more educated and knowledgeable about the the world around you. The syllabus is intimidating with all the quizzes and readings, but they're really not that bad. An A really isn't unreachable as long as you just do the work assigned. You won't regret taking this!
Dr. Pegoda is an extremely chill and laid back professor that cares about their students and is very understanding of personal needs. This class does require a lot of reading and there are daily quizzes. However, the grading criteria is not too difficult so as long as you try, you will pass. This class involves a lot of participation so be prepared
Don't take this course if you're looking for a blow-off class because there is a ton of work and reading involved. However, if you put in the effort, an A is attainable. Every assessment requires writing, so make sure you take the time to go over your work! Dr. Pegoda truly cares for his students and will help out any time. I loved this class!
Best professor! Made an A in this class, but wasnt easy. Lots of reading, a few essays, and a project. You honestly have to show up for every class meeting to get a good grade because theres a quiz every time. Dr. Pegoda is very understanding and sometimes extends deadlines, office hours are very helpful, and offers a lot of extra credit.
Dr Pegoda is a professor who truly cares! You will have to work to achieve, but if you put in the effort you will definitely receive an A. 'Out of the box' thinking is expected, as well as the famous pop-quiz or pop-presentation! Wish I could take another class again, but I have been inspired for life and motivated to continue. Thank you, diolch!
Dr. Pegoda is incredibly invested in his students. Homework is tailored to deepen your understanding of any concepts you learn throughout the class. I was nervous taking a Queer Studies class for the first time, but Dr. Pegoda makes himself accessible in order to help you succeed. The work load is a little heavy, but you'll find it's worth it all!
Dr. Pegoda is awesome and the best professor I've ever had. He's super into the material he teaches and is very caring about his students. I would not recommend skipping because there's a short quiz every class. Be prepared to read a lot and have a lot of group discussions where participation matters, but it's all very fun and interesting.
Mostly a discussion based class so be aware of that, Dr. Pegoda makes sure everyone in the class is growing and learning would take his class again.
He's been my favorite professor so far. He truly does care about his students and wants to see them succeed. He's good about extending deadlines and having an open class discussion about the topic(s) in hand. He makes everyone feel safe to speak up and say what's on their mind. Would 100% recommend.
If you actually engage with the readings/coursework, you will come out with a good understanding of the subjects discussed! Dr. Pegoda takes the subject as seriously as it should be taken, and brings a wide array of authors and topics to the class. NOT an easy A, you have to do the readings and come to class because there are quizzes every day.
Dr. Pegoda was such a great professor! They are very kind and encourage us to discuss the topics we read about. Very open and understanding to students who may find certain subjects triggering. They do NOT make this class an easy A, you definitely have to work for it! Readings, daily quizzes, and papers due, but honestly one of my favorite classes!
Dr. Pegoda is a wonderful professor! The structure of the course (U.S. Secularisms) is reading as homework with in-depth, in-class discussions. We had a monograph paper, challenges project and presentation, and a final paper (completed outside of class). Dr. Pegoda cares deeply about his students and gives them every chance to learn and succeed.
Dr. Pegoda is one of the most caring professors I have ever had, they make an effort to connect with students. There are a lot of interesting readings and a quiz over each topic, a paper about your identity, a free response test, a paper over what you learned, and a simple project. Do not take this class if you do not want your beliefs challenged.
Dr. Pegoda is one of the most genuine and caring people I have encountered. Everyone in the class is forced to speak up bc discussion based, which sounds awful on paper but makes everyone feel comfortable around each other later in the semester. Show up to office hours, even if it is just to chat and Dr. Pegoda will give you credit in some way.
Great professor! Cares about their students as if they are family. Quizzes over readings are majority of your grade so make sure to be thorough. Tough grader but only because they want you to show that you grasped material. Avoid this class if you are close minded and unwilling to change beliefs on sensitive social issues like LGBTQ+ and feminism.
Dr. Pegoda is easily the best professor I have ever taken. His class is formatted to let students have in depth discussion while keeping the class respectful. He genuinely cares for his students, and he will go out of his way to make sure every opinion is heard. I would absolutely recommend him.
He's a great person - but way too much hw. I get that summer courses are fast paced, but the amt of daily work was ridiculous. So difficult to maintain other classes bc of this one. Daily work has u up early and completing late at night. Every single day. There is no break. No exams, just a million assignments. Good luck lol.
Took class online because of covid and even though it was just a women's studies class, I spent more work on it than all of my other classes combined. You have to read a ton of articles for each discussion and they have to be 600+ words, and there were A LOT of discussions, plus other assignments. Good class with good info, just way too much work.
Cares about his students, if you need an extension just ask him and he will be more than happy to help you out. However, there are so many readings and there are way too many discussion posts. You have to do one 600 word reply and two 300 word replies twice a week! You do learn a lot from this course though
Hes a good professor and its clear he cares for his students, but the amount of work he assigns is more than needed. Out of all the classes Ive ever taken, his class was overwhelmingly stressful. Granted, his topics are important and interesting, but just be prepared to work non-stop.
I enjoyed this class. It was definitely time-consuming and a lot of reading, but this class has helped me personally and professionally. I would say definitely take this class but there is a lot of reading to do. Every homework requires about 600 words and 3 responses to others of 200 words. Good luck.
I will say that Dr. Pegoda is a great professor, however the formatting of his class and grading criteria was ALOT to deal with. I spent more time on this class than I did any of my classes in my major, which is Comp Sci. THAT'S how much work you had. Be prepared to do a lot of reading. The readings themself are interesting but you MUST find time.
I took him Fall'20. His material and articles were enjoyable and I loved reading them. Being able to interact with my classmates were also nice, esp during Covid. However, it was hard. 600+ word discussions 2x a week, then 300 word replies to 2 people. Articles can be up to 4-10 depending on the topic. Most work and most stress I experienced.
I'm enrolled full-time. Somehow this class requires a vast amount of more work than any of my courses. The class is interesting and has very engaging conversations. Amount of work required is ridiculous! Nice caring professor. Very active and gives immediate feedback. Get ready for weekly 1200+ words. That's 14 papers for 16 weeks! Good game.
Maybe its the pandemic but the amount of work given is for people who have no other obligations other than school. Inconsiderate of students with unavoidable life emergencies. Assigns multiple time consuming readings and expects one 400+ word discussion post and three 300+ word posts replies PER WEEK.
DO NOT TAKE!!! an insane and unrealistic amount of work for an async online course. I have 6 classes yet I spend 80% of my week working on this class. 2 weekly discussion posts 1000+ words, 200+ word replies weekly, 4 research projects, 2 exams, & an ungodly amount of reading in order to complete all of the assignments. ESPECIALLY during a pandemic
The amount of work assigned during a pandemic is ridiculous. Easy to get a hold-off but does not have a balance as they spam Group Me 24/7. I have never felt so overwhelmed with a class before not surprised a handful of students dropped the class. Tries to be inclusive but hardly read any work by BIPOC. Overall disappointed what I got out of class
Queer history was a great class. We read several books. Dr. Pegoda adjusted the work load a few times. Every week contained diverse voices. Learned material in this class not discussed in any other class. They do make you work for the grade, but the learning is worth it, and they are always great to chat with and ready to help. Will take again.
We had great discussions in the GroupMe and great discussions in Blackboard. We really connected as as class, even with 90 something. Prof Pegoda is always there to help. Get ready to read. This is not a "blow off class." You'll learn more about LGBT people and more about yourself too.
Religion and Politics is an interesting class. Lots of reading, lots of writing. You learn to see religion in all kinds of new ways. Class has several short assignments, discussions, midterm essay. Most understanding and flexible professor I've had during covid. Understands the circumstances, still provides real learning experiences. Take Dr P!!
Professor Pegoda is the best professor to take by far. This was a Queer Studies course and I learned so much wonderful material. Yes there is a lot of material but it is not unmanageable. It honestly is all extremely interesting and doesn't feel like work at all. The Prof is very caring and willing to work with you if you are struggling.
Class consists of 1 - 1.5 thousand words a week. Can you believe it? And you have to read so much a textbook which is written by him and it is free so you won't have to spend money. The thousands of words you will write a week are not too hard but extremely time consuming. Do not recommend taking this class unless you are devoted to women studies.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO The professor is amazing and very kind! I would not take this class again though. There's so much reading and you need to dedicate so much of your time for this one class. The content is interesting and there's no need to buy a textbook (he give you a link to a Reader). Very tough grader though.
Professor Pegoda was the only professor, out of the 4, that I had this semester that actually cares about his students. The class itself isn't hard, however he does challenge you to think outside of your comfort zone. I took Intro to Queer Studies and there are weekly participation posts so be prepared to write responses and read a ton of articles!
Dr. Pegoda is one of the most caring professors that I have ever taken. He genuinely cares for his students, and wants them to learn during the semester. Yes, the course is intense with readings, however they are interesting and provided for free by him. This course is not an easy A, but if you do the work you will get the grade you deserve.
Dr. Pegoda is a great professor. The class is heavy workload but it is easy and very well organized. Easy to keep up with. Gives a lot of extra credit opportunities, the textbook is free. I would recommend it.
I took their Intro to Queer Studies asynchronous class. 1 discussion post + 3 replies. There is a video project. Textbook has lots to read but it's entertaining and manageable. 3 deadline extensions if needed, including the final. A handful of tests but they're easy if you've done the reading. Extremely easy class with a great, communicative prof.
Honestly it seemed like an easy class on paper, but don't be fooled. This prof will give you 10-15 articles ranging from 3-20 pages a week, as well as occasionally required films and videos to watch. Then you have to write and reply to two posts. It seems like this professor doesn't know we have other classes to take. Nice person though!
This class alone feels like the weight of 4 classes put together. Every week you are reading a tiring amount of information as well as writing at least 1200+ words for the various assignments. This does not include the 4 essay question exams as well as the 4 partner activities that require an immense amount of writing. This class is way too much.
We had 3 exams, all were short-long answer questions and expects a lot of detail. Lots of weekly reading, but it's doable in an hour if you stay motivated. 1 video project and replies to other peoples every week. Weekly discussion boards (550 words) and replies almost every week. Not as bad as people make it out to be, just stay on tops of things.
this professor assigns work like we do not have anything else due for any other class. also gave absolutely zero guidelines for answering test questions, and then expected you to read their mind. also acts like our best friend, but clearly will grade otherwise. the group chat he made was also always active, any time of day, like please chill.
Good class. NOT an easy A, makes you work for it. Answers messages quickly. Learned a ton.
This is my fourth class with Dr. Pegoda. Every class challenges me to think in new ways. There is a lot of reading and writing, but it all helps me learn. By far most thoughtful professor I've had. They really care about your learning and what to help you
This class is really not that hard, you just have to read Dr. Pegoda's instructions, the reviews they provide, ask questions if you have them. They expect you to learn and work hard. Its for sure not an easy A, but don't believe negative comments. This is the most helpful and clear professor ever. Will be taking another class of theirs this Fall.
Took Queer History. Class kept me busy but I enjoyed it. Be sure to communicate any questions or problems. He always answered quickly and was more than glad to help when I needed it.
Just do the work and you'll be fine. I enjoyed how relevant the material in this class was. Everything is interesting and different. Most interactive and involved professor I've ever had. Dr Pegoda really cares about everyone and wants people to learn and do well. They're very knowledgable, too.
Dr. Pegoda is a nice person, but this class will have you read a weekly book with articles ranging from 2-20 pages. Plus other writing assignments. He asks too much of his students, and his grading is confusing. Also, this is more of a religious studies class than a History class. DO NOT JOIN THE GROUP CHAT it's annoying.
I took Dr. Pegoda's class during the Summer term; there was a weekly discussion board with two replies. We read six books during the semester, plus many other materials. Three quizzes are open-note and are done at your own pace, along with a term paper. Dr. Pegoda is understanding with due dates and late items, and he gives excellent feedback.
The workload given to students is ridiculous. I don't recommend him unless you want to spend hours doing his assignments. He grades really confusingly, and it feels like if you don't write what he wants to hear, you won't do good in the class. Preaching prioritizing mental health yet requires you to do so much work. When you want a break.. silence.
This class has actually made me worse of a student. Unreasonable amount of reading so be prepared to neglect your other courses because the prof will give you an F on quizzes with zero feedback, arbitrary group chat, the most contradicting advocate for mental health, incredibly unprofessional and uninspiring. Would not recommend! Praying I make it
All you have to do in this class is do the work, participate, show you care. You have to really study and learn but the professors is always there, answers most emails in a matter of seconds. This is absolutely a class to take if you're looking to learn and be supported in the process!
Interesting videos and projects in this class. Lots of reading but it gets easier as you go and see how it all fits together. As far as the professor supporting mental heath there are grace periods, extensions, offers for help far more than other classes have, there's fexlabity and help but he still requires people to learn.
Professor makes us do an unattainable amount of work. Content provided in readers is all biased and filtered which makes learning hard and indirect. You will be required to read 2 300 page books in 2 weeks btw.
Nice and caring professor, but admittedly the work load is a lot. He is SUPER technical and meticulous with his assignments; you are assigned discussion posts of about 600 words per week, a few pages of multiple readings per week, "quizzes" which take forever to finish because each response is pretty much an essay, and more.
Dr. AJP is very passionate about his work. They care about the well-being of their students, but without ceasing to be strict. Although the workload is difficult, the topics are very interesting if you have a liberal or leftist ideology. Definitely recommended!
Please be prepared for the workload. Do not take if you do not have time to read long long papers that are confusing. There are quizzes every week on these and you basically have to give an essay for each question. Other than that, they are very kind & drop some quizzes. A good portion of your grade is participation. They are very understanding.
He is so understanding. I never write reviews but I had to for him. He is caring, engaging, and always responsive. He will work with you with any problem you have. The class is a lot of work but he drops quizzes, gives free extra credit, offers other extra credit, and allows late work.
Best and most well organized online class I've ever taken. Dr. AJP really cares about all of their students and wants you to do well. there is a LOT of reading and writing (more than even my literary analysis class), but put in the work and you'll do fine. If you have basic critical thinking skills this class is an easy A.
All the other reviews that are 1/5 are true. The content of the class is great, but due to the professor's teaching style, it makes the class unenjoyable and dreadful to take. The fact that there is a GroupMe made by the professor is a red flag. It is spammed everyday by the professor at late hours (think 8 PM). Overall, they're very unpleasurable.
The class is time consuming. There is a lot of reading, but he provides the textbook for free (he created it). The assignments are easy, though there is a lot of writing and open ended assignments. About four group projects through the semester, but those were also easy. You have a hand in grading and he explains what he's looking for. Great prof.
For an elective especially this course was highly excessive. Weekly 500 word pages on a book the teacher wrote themselves. Late night (after 10pm) group me messages that needed responses not to mention other weekly assignments on top of all this. You are required to record yourself and post on Youtube. Felt uncomfortable and stressed constantly.
Inspiring and transformative class. Always available to help. Interacts with the class. Doesn't seem like an online class at all. This class makes ou work but it's worth it.
Marginalized Theologies was an interesting course. Lots of reading and small projects. All very interesting material. Participation is very important. Class requires visits to the Writing Center. Class included several guest speakers.
Dr Pegoda took over teaching this class in Feb. There were lots of changes in the class but everything worked real well and the class was enjoyable.
I was honestly not expecting that this course would have the amount of work it did. Weekly readings and wrap-ups were time-consuming. Same with the group assignments. Everything was short answer and he wants you to be very detailed. Though, course material was very interesting and insightful. Prof really cares about his students!
An immense course-load. No lectures and not a lot of guidance as far as teaching. Communicates and stays up to date on grades, Canvas, and GroupMe. Post-grad level work is expected as an undergrad. Wouldn't recommend at all, if you are taking any other classes.
Hard work doesn't matter, this class is impossible! Weekly you write 1000+ words in discussions or reactions. There's odd grading, feedback, and outlandish deductions. With formal participation, there's no clear guidelines. Doing discussions, GroupMe and everything else will still get you 0/100 on your participation points. Love yourself JUST DON'T
too many reading assignments assigned per discussion post, very demanding, also desperately wants to be acknowledged of their flaws but lacks the empathy to be understanding of others; quite odd
He grades essays harshly and deducts a large number of points for the smallest things. He pushes his opinions into the discussions and has you read and watch videos that don't relate to the class at all. The course load is extensive. You can follow directions perfectly and still get a low grade. Do not take this class.
This was a great summer class with deeply personal readings. Dr. Pegoda makes you work for it, but is there every step of the way. They even arranged for guest speakers to Zoom with us each week.
This class changed how I watch films! We watched so many old movies and others that I thought I would hate. Very interesting material. Lots of YouTube lessons. The big final project is making a movie script.
Ignore the negative posts!! Just do the work, show you care. You do have to earn your grades. He's picky about some things, but he lets you know exactly what to do. The proposal project was a lot of fun and very different. Lots of chances for online interactions.
This class was unnecessarily difficult. The professor is nice and he shows that he cares about his students. However, there were weekly essays that he graded harshly and took off points for the most minor thing. The information provided in class is interesting, however, difficult to enjoy as there is an immense course load that is time consuming.
This professor is understanding and it's obvious how much he cares for his students. But, I've taken him for two classes at UH, and in both courses the workload is unbearable. I struggled to keep up with the multiple weekly assignments. Don't take his courses unless you have a lot of time for them since there's a lot of assignments and readings.
Dr. Pegoda is very knowledgeable and clearly cares a lot about the content he teaches but the workload is IMMENSE. There's a GroupMe made by him in which it's mandatory that you're in it and he texts at odd hours of the night. Not worth the stress trying to complete a core credit.
I took this class for an elective credit. Do not take it if you don't want to spend every weekend writing an essay. The final is the worst, it's an approximately 10-page+ essay. There are group assignments and once in a while, mandatory sessions. You need to devote A LOT of time into this class, it is not an easy grade.
Great class, last one before graduating. Learned so much and appreciated the detailed expectations.
This was a diversity class not a writing in the disciplines one. Every respond this professor gave to their students felt like a condescending one...
Class is pretty decent and engaging if you're interested in queer studies! However, there are a lot of assignments every week, and took a lot of my time for the semester. Just make sure to read the instructions properly and you will be fine.
What a class. Take this one to study atheists. Lots of papers but quick feedback for everything. Made great friends in this class, too. Just do the work and stay on top of things!
Overall he was an okay professor. Make sure you read the syllabus before asking any questions. He is pretty understanding that life happens so make sure you communicate if there are ever any issues. There is A LOT of homework so get ready to set aside a good amount of time. Definitely not an easy A or blowoff class. Interesting content though.
He was extremely harsh in grading, when I reached out, he seemed uninterested in helping and made it seem as though it was a bother and said that it was already graded. When I checked over the exam, none of the feedback was legible. The exam prompts were unclear and felt discouraged overall and struggled to pass the course.
He is clearly passionate about Disability and makes everything very interesting.
He is a very harsh grader. He provides prompts and questions for assignments/group projects that are hard to fully comprehend and understand. Not really interested in helping with grades, is unsympathetic in helping.
Prof Pegoda listed all the readings/rubrics in some of the most organized and easy to access formatting I've ever seen. Theres a lot of readings and a report summarizing your thoughts due each week. Only reason I wouldnt take this prof again is because the assigned workload got to me at the end of the semester. Some grades are dropped though
My main issue with them was the paper and the tests. The guidelines for the paper was so vague and confusing. The tests included ultra specific questions like "in this movie which of these quotes were not said?" The weekly text posts were pretty fun though. He isn't the end of the world, but not my first choice.
I would never take this professor again. Extremely specific test questions like which author said this quote and gives you 50 authors to read papers on. I do not recommend. Overall, he gives an overload of information and test you on random things and an excessive amount of work and reading.
For an online class with no lectures and is purely based on readings, was extremely difficult for no reason. Not to mention he is a harsh grader, and when asked for feedback, gives the vaguest responses ever. The material is interesting, but the professor ruins the class. Take someone else.
An interesting class but very difficult and long assignments. If you have a lot of other classes that are reading & writing heavy, I'd steer clear because this one will add onto the stress. Emailed him multiple times about grading, and every response back seems like an argument. Not an easy A or high B class.
Unnecessary amount of book reading and articles. The tests are a bunch of random questions about one liner quotes that a random person said and he wonders why no one does well on them. The class is interesting but he makes it difficult for no reason at all. Do not take his class unless you have no choice. He's also very argumentative about grading
This class is definitely an easy A… if you plan on taking this class alone. What's upsetting is how interesting the material is, but his requirements and the way he grades has led me to a point where I am not learning anymore and simply trying to pass. This post was originally 850 words, 500 over the 350 limit. PLEASE AVOID.
I took Professor Pegoda's class because I was interested in the material and excited to start. However, this eagerness was quickly stripped from me upon entering class, as he is a very tough marker, and seems to have minimal care in regards to students. I am disappointed to have to write this at all, but I would not take this class again.
The class material is not difficult, but there is a lot of reading and writing required. The big textbook of readings is given but you do have to read two books and watch many movies for this class (for tests). I feel like it is a lot of work for an elective class. Also the tests are very difficult and often unreasonable questions. Do extra credit.
There was a discussion post every week, and you also had to make two replies. The discussion post was about the weekly readings. Three tests and a term paper in the semester covered the class material. Overall, I think the class was easy as long as you stayed on top of your work. Dr. Pegoda is also great at responding to your emails.
The grades are based on weekly discussion posts, attending live sessions, exams and one term paper. I enjoyed the material but the exams were pretty difficult, he gave unlimited attempts but you had to match quotes to many different authors and know mundane details about the movies. It wasn't too horrible but also was not my favorite class at all
When raising valid issues about grades, the responses given were dismissive and condescending. Feedback is useless and unclear, is unprofessional when confronted with mistakes, and takes students' concerns as a joke. Don't take if not needed. Tests are needlessly hard and vague, they lower your grade even with extensive studying. DON'T TAKE PLEASE!
Office hours are very helpful. They always answer emails quickly. Just study the material and you'll be fine. The Live sessions were my favorite part. Professor is more dedicated than most.
The class is interesting, but they make it impossible to enjoy. Grading is harsher than upper level English courses (which I got As in but somehow made a D on their paper?). I did not understand what they were asking on many of the exam questions. I genuinely like them but ego ruins what could be a beautiful experience. Focus should be on learning.
Great class Do the work, and you'll be fine. He makes you earn your grades.
I did more work in this class than a lot of English class I took and it truly felt unnecessary. The stuff your are tested on is so random and hard to prepare for and just overall weird. He grades stuff and such based on ego and didn't enjoy this class as much. I knew as soon as reading the syllabus something was off
I struggled with life this semester but he always worked with me and recognized my efforts. He answered all of my emails quickly. The Live Sessions were the best part of the class. Interesting guest speakers and new ideas. Soo much reading but range of authors and ideas are represented. I felt seen in this class. Ignore the complainers.
I wouldn't recommend this prof to people who already have a heavy course load or want a low effort class. The content of the course was interesting and the professor was passionate about the material, but there's a lot of material to go over and the tests are annoying because it can be very specific about what the questions are asking.
This professor has taught me so much not just academically, but in my life. There is a lot of readings, listening, and movie watching but it is so worth it. If you pay attention and genuinely put in effort you will do great! Would recommend to everyone!
Loved this class! Taught me so much about everything around me and myself. This class led me to pick my minor and give me more knowledge about what I'm interested in! I am very thankful for this professor. I would rec this class to anyone interested! The readings are worth it trust me.
All assignments and expectations were straight-forward. The disability creative project was the most challenging. Lots of reading but nothing boring. Study and you will do well. Professor is strict about grades being earned and is kind of a hard grader.
Just don't. Find a professor willing to provide students with a clear rubric for assignments, otherwise you'll be given arbitrary grades. If a large chunk of the class has issues with your grading, maybe it is time to reevaluate... It's no wonder he doesn't allow students to make group-me's.
dropped this class on the official reporting date. take this with a grain of salt. Their instructions and announcements felt overly wordy and overwhelming (to me). They are passionate but if ur someone who needs clear and concise instructions, this class prob is not for you. A lot of work for an elective as well.
Do not take his courses unless you want to lower your gpa. He doesn't give clear instructions but is quick to hand out zeros. This is the only class I have issues with. I'm seriously considering a formal complaint to UH because he doesn't seem to realize he's messing with people's futures. Wish I could drop but UH never schedules the classes I need
Don't take this class! I've enjoyed every course I've ever taken at UH, especially those under the women's studies category. Except for this one, he is an unnecessary hard grader and will not reason with you when you try to communicate that you need help. His exams are also random and so lengthy. PLEASE just take another course.
Everything is so straightforward in this class. Best online class I've ever had, everything is very organized. Great guest speakers and daily updates. This class required a full commitment. Just reach out if you have questions and be ready to do your part!
I do not recommend it at all. Very negative experience—extremely harsh grading, minimal feedback, questionable testing style, etc. This is the only time I have felt this way in my 3 years at UH. If I had known this, I would've avoided him at all costs. Don't be fooled by the 5/5 reviews. Please save your time and money. It is not worth it.
if you could take another professor for this course I would recommend, class was work heavy so be prepared if you have another work heavy class it's a lot to maintain. The tests were ABSOLUTELY terrible. I barely had an idea what to expect each test, felt like I was going into it blindsided, just do good on the other assignments and you'll pass.
Easy class, they make you work and learn. Class focuses on learning words in lgbt studies. Loved the variety provided in the online lectures.
too much work, it's hard to stay on top of everything so if you're busy, try not to take them. but they're very understanding, make sure to reach out to them!! they're great, class not so much. i also didn't understand the exams and guidelines for grading
Homework for this class wasn't too overwhelming, but the exams were challenging.Whenever I reached out to the professor for help, his email responses came across as dismissive, often directing me back to the syllabus, which lacked sufficient detail. I took this course as a free elective.
Solid class. Very helpful in office hours if you show you care and do the work.
not helpful at all, says he will go out of his way to help but when asked all he says it to refer about to the lecture. 0/10, tough grader DO NOT TAKEEEEE
It feels as though this professor lacks empathy; instead of understanding when students make mistakes, they seem more focused on penalizing those mistakes rather than helping. When a student reaches out for clarification about their grade, the concern is dismissed as grade grubbing. Also a HARD grader. I would NOT suggest this class.
He was really helpful when writing my final essay! Also he provides a lot of extra credit opportunities.
Overall the toughest grader I have had throughout my years of college. Essays are almost impossible to get over a 12/15, he grades every single small thing there is. He requires you to read his book of 400+ pages, and the tests are very tedious.
Andrew Joseph Pegoda is one of the worst professors I've ever had. He is an extremely hard grader. Has you write papers over material that he comes up with. Pulls material out of nowhere and you're tested over his made up words. When you email him, he lacks empathy and emails back snappy and smart responses. Awful person in general. DO NOT take him
ppl who complained about him are lazy AF. You gotta read or you won't pass 1. organized/predictible. 2. Reading is about 20 pgs a week or videos. 3. 0-1 Canvas response, 3 (4-page essays) and 3 exams. 4.Xtra credit, grades on curve. 5. intelligent, approachable, offers zoom and feedback on papers before the due date. 6. Big on mental health.
This is my favorite class: 3 essays (4-6 pgs), 3 open book exams on mostly films, videos, and Ted talks. The reading is light for a 3000 level class. Participation is attending or watching the recording on his 5 guest zoom speakers. He grades and responds fast, big on mental health, caring, and offers feedback. It's hard to fail unless you're lazy.
Disappointed, I can't recommend since they are arbitrary & harsh. Prioritizes 'correctness' over learning with insensible, condescending feedback that offer nothing constructive. Seems to have fun penalizing. I wanted to enjoy the class as the teachings are thoughtful, but exams, essay rubrics & instructions are obstructive to students. Don't take.
Recommend taking another professor, especially if u have a heavy course load. Load is heavy for a level 2000 course. So wouldn't recommend if ur looking for an easy elective. Requirements for essays could get confusing & he is a harsh grader. Tests cover a variety of things pulled from all sources (text, music videos, etc) & can get very specific.
the class was structured off 5 live sessions, 3 essays and 3 tests, while it wasn't a lot, his course material at times seemed irrelevant or far fetched specially when it came to being on the tests, where he comes up with his own complex questions. wouldn't recommend, tough grader and can come off as passive aggressive, there fs is easier classes!
Just do the work. Take advantage of all the offers to help, bonus points, revision opportunities. Great professor and class. Just don't be lazy!
Dr. Pegoda is great and really caring about his students. The class covers a lot of ground in the semester and you can expect a solid amount of work, but I found it all interesting. And it's all super relevant right now, the class helps you think critically about it.
Take this professor if you like learning.
Grading is fair - as long as you do the work you'll be fine. Guest speakers were interesting and I liked the films. Dr. Pegoda is organized and he cares a lot about students and the topic.
He's a heavy grader and the questions in his exams are so intricate and complex. I took him as a last choice and don't recommend you take him.
