I feel like the class shouldn't really be difficult but I personally do not understand any of the material he is teaching in his lectures. I find myself rather skipping class and taking notes from the textbook than sit in his lectures :/
Think he's a great Prof.I took geog 312 with him. Very knowledgeable . You can tell he is very interested in what he teaches. Lots of relevant examples from current and past events . Tests are fair and labs are a breeze as long as you are willing to put in the effort.
Lectures were quite informative. If you have taken all the required 200lv geog and below, most of the things youll learn will just make sense. Andrew was a pree cool guy and had great attitude towards students. The course felt like an elective. Exams are fair. Textbook is not completely necessary
Dr. Perkins' lecture notes was a mess. It was really hard and confusing to follow especially when there were only pictures on the slides which didn't explain any of the class material. The only way to study was to google everything instead of reading his lecture notes. There were many major mistakes in his lab prereadings.
The material itself was a lot to take in but as long as you go to lectures you'll know what to focus on. Class was boring at times & I ended up having to look at the book to catch up on the stuff I missed but the textbook is not needed so long as you pay attention during lectures and write down notes and memorize, would still recommend though.
Easy course. Lot of material but exams are straightforward. Textbook not required to pass, but has helped for points that were glossed over in lecture. Midterm is all M/C and final includes material from the lab in a written section. Don't forget to do the online assignments.
I very much enjoyed the lectures and found Dr. Perkins to be a great lecturer! He was clear and made a lot of material as engaging as possible. Would definitely not recommend missing classes if your goal is to do well, but if you go to lectures and take good notes it will be a great experience!
A great prof. He wants you to do well and is always open to help you succeed. Easy to understand and goes at a good pace.
Andrew is a great prof who expects a lot from his students but everything you learn is fairly valuable. It was his first time teaching the field school and he was very flexible and had endless field work for us (we didn't quite cover everything). 310 was by far the best course I have taken in my Environmental Science degree and would recommend.
Andrew was often late ending his classes, and the next class would be waiting in the back. He also does not correctly scale his marking on CANVAS. For example, if you see you are getting 95%, it may very well be 75%. You are expected to calculate the grade on your own. This caused class wide confusion and outrage when the final marks were posted
Andrew is very passionate about teaching and about the material he teaches. I enjoyed going to his classes because he does a great job of keeping you engaged, telling stories, has good humour and gets the whole class involved in examples. Great for visual learners like myself. Labs are long and quite difficult. Attend class each week to do well!
The course I took was a first year very introductory but it was so easy, show up to lecture and you'll do completely fine. Andrew is very passionate and knowledgable about what he teaches and supplements his lectures with examples and visual aids to ensure everybody understands topics and processes well.
I loved his class! He is very helpful and genuinely cares about his students. I found his class very easy to do well in if you keep up with the readings and take good notes. His slides are engaging and his experiments are hilarious!
Awesome guy, you can tell that he is really passionate about what he is teaching which makes the class a lot better.
Favorite prof so far!! He constantly keeps the class engaged with demonstrations and experiments and is very passionate about what he teachers. Lectures are required as not much information is posted on the slides but as long as you pay attention and take notes you don't have to worry about it.
Very knowledgeable prof, but an unwieldy amount of information covered in a disorganized manner in the lecture. We are expected to know everything in the textbook readings as well for exams. Exams are sloppily written and not fair. Also true of labs. A case of a prof who hides behind curve grading as an excuse for unfair evaluation criteria.
I actually quite enjoyed GEOG 111 with Andrew. He was very passionate about the course content and always seemed to be in a good mood, which made me want to learn a little more. My TA for the labs sucked, but Andrew was wonderful.
Awesome guy! Best pro ever!
He is awesome! If you attend to class every week and prepare for the lecture, I promise you will get a A range.
Perkins class was my favourite ever! Inspired me to peruse a minor geography! He's super knowledgeable and passionate about the topic, and will always go the extra mile to answer your questions and answers emails really quickly. Can't wait to take another class with him!
10/10 would recommend taking a class with Dr. Perkins! He is really funny and has engaging lectures.
dear lord, do NOT take GEOG111 if you do not have a true passion for physical geography. initially took this class as a GPA booster but it ended up being the worst grade i've ever gotten at SFU. andrew seems like a nice guy but the class overall was unreasonable. lectures were practically useless as theyre all pictures & labs were unreasonable
I recommend taking any class with Perkins. His lectures are very informative and engaging and he is very passionate about what he's teaching. I found his exams to be quite difficult however, make sure to pay attention and take good notes in class.
Hilarious, Joyful, Always smiling. He makes concepts very easy to understand, making you feel like you've already taken the class before. Although his tests are very difficult so be prepared for unexpected questions. Can score a solid B if you attend all Lectures. Read the textbook for that A grade.
A very charismatic and passionate prof. Attend all the lectures if possible not only some test material is not in the notes and can only be heard in them, but they are legitimately pretty good to listen to.
Andrew was a really nice prof. His lectures speech wise were great. He's super enthusiastic and knowledgable but his lecture slides were a bit messy/disorganized. Also paid $80 for an online textbook that I didn't need so beware of that. His exams are dense so study hard! But he's a good prof if you're into geography. Super passionate & caring.
Andrew is very passionate about the lectures he gives, and always finds a way to make them interactive. Although he is a little cheesy at times, the effort he puts into classes makes it worth showing up. He makes connections with real-life examples of subject matter, making it easier to relate and follow along during lecture. Would def take again!
Labs were not easy, so make sure you MAKE FRIENDS & do as much pre-lab prep as possible! Attend all lectures because (for fall 2018) he didn't post lecture slides (not the full ones at least), and there's a lot things explained verbally & visually. If you keep up studies and ask questions, you'll do great. I didn't. Perkins is a SOLID DUDE THO!!
Andrew is an awesome guy! I really enjoyed taking his class. He explains concepts clearly and gives you all of the info you need for labs/exams in advance, no surprises! Read ahead for the labs to make sure you understand what you're doing, it can be a time crunch!
He's a great prof and his lectures are very engaging. The exam was really hard. I studied the hardest for this exam and still ended up just passing but I kept up with my labs which helped keep my grade up in the end.
Awesome prof! lectures are interesting and informative, not a very hard A as long as you study hard. However, the labs are not easy, make sure you make some friends and work together.
Andrew is a phenomenal prof; his passion for geography is clearly illustrated through his energetic and informative lectures. If all GEOG classes at SFU were taught by Andrew I would, without a doubt, pursue GEOG as my major. I attended his lectures solely due to the fact that they were too interesting to miss. Basically a mini TED talk.
Andrew is a great prof and clearly cares about his students' engagement and learning. His lectures are informative and often interactive. Labs require some preparation; exams are relatively easy if you study well.
Great field course
Very passionate about what he teaches, so much so it has made me consider changing my degree. He is an amazing lecturer, and sometimes explains ideas with demonstrations. Labs are relatively simple. As long as you pay attention in lecture and read the textbook this is a very easy course to pass, it is set up for student success.
Wow, idek where to begin because Andrew is just such an AMAZING prof. I was devastated when classes went online because I loved attending his lectures, they are like mini-TED talks (another comment says it and it's true!). I hope I get the chance to incorporate more GEOG classes into my degree just so I can have Andrew again, this guy is a LEGEND!
I really enjoyed having him as a professor. Such a good guy and cares about what he teaches and his students. Always tried to engage students with various in-lecture activities. Additionally, he recorded his lectures which was nice.
If you have to take an elective and enjoy sciences THIS IS IT. Amazing lectures and labs were very well done.
Prof Perkins has one of the most engaging lectures on SFU. He engages with the students and give demonstrations to enhance our learning. He is definitely one of the professors that you should take with. Caveat though, if you miss the lecture you have no idea what to do in tutorial so you MUST GO!
Explains concepts very well. The lab portion of class is not explained well at all online, and the TA didn't help. Weekly lab assignments. Weekly notes were completed for easy marks every week totalling 20%, boosting the final grade a lot. No midterm.
It's clear that Andrew really cares about the topics he teaches. His lectures & videos are informative and he keeps the material interesting. However, I am not enjoying the class overall. The weekly assignments (tutorials & case studies) take so long to do & grades are unaccessible. 48% of the grade is completed in the last 2 weeks of school.
I very like Andrew and he is an excellent instructor. If you very into geography, just get his courses because there is a lot of extracurricular knowledge related to its geography. LOVE IT! I highly recommend Andrew's courses!
Professor Perkins is a gem. Reminds me of Phil Dunphy from Modern Family. His lectures have so much thought put into them and he's a very caring prof. The only thing that was rough was the labs for this course. I had to do a lot of research myself to try and learn certain concepts that weren't covered but expected to know about for the labs.
I've never rated a professor before, but Andrew is way too great. He is the most awesome instructor I have met in SFU, and I met a lot from different majors. He is very responsible and patient, from his lectures, you can tell he loves teaching and he is very good at it. Just great.
He is awesome!! He replies to your emails and tries to help with the difficulties that you are facing with the course materials. There were some maths involved and Dr. Perkins tried his best to help. He is sincerely approachable and patient.
It's always great to have a professor that cares so much about the course he teaches. His lectures are very well thought out and full of enthusiasm. I took this course as an elective and it turned out to be a great decision because of him. Good stuff dude.
Perkins is an professor. His teaching styles made the online environment engaging. lectures included prerecorded videos and readings with external videos. He provides note packages and his exams were very fair. Very approachable and caring about his students I emailed about a related career and he was so helpful!! Definitely take a course with him!
Perkins was an enjoyable prof overall. The course content itself is pretty easy, but in my opinion, the lectures were disorganized and unclear because there was information everywhere (textbook, weekly modules that had to be read through, lecture videos). Labs aren't too hard; I would recommend finding a friend to do it with - makes things easier.
His videos are very informative. If there is something you do not understand in class, just email him. He gives You a descriptive reply in 24hrs. However the labs are pretty monotonous and boring. His assistant does not put in half the effort.
Taken online. Was probably the best prof I have taken: knowledgeable, puts in effort in his online lectures, slides and notes are detailed. The course however was some of the most work I've ever had in any school course ever. It was relatively easy and straightforward but there was just so much to do.
I dont get the hype around this class. You spend 3-4 hours a week on lab assignments for them to only be worth 1%. I only took this class for PDP and I wouldn't recommend unless you can handle a heavy workload and bad TA's
Great lectures, illustrated and engaging. Really learned a lot in this course and enjoyed the format.
Andrew is amazing! Lectures were very clear with texts, videos, images and games. Lots of assignments but if you follow the steps you can easily get a high grade. I'm taking another class of him right now. Also high quality and good TA.
Online version of this course is just bad. Recycling all the videos from the previous year. Prof even avoids saying times in the introduction video to prevent another recording. Tutorials are a mess, there is a time limit for tutorials, you can see the questions but never know if it is short answer or MC until you throw yourself into the quiz.
Andrew Perkins is a great prof. He put a lot of effort into making his lectures enjoyable and time-efficient. Assessments are also very fair.
Student would work 7-12 hours for one assignment, but the outcome is only 4-5%. You might get lost if you cannot reach prof and TA which they are relucantly to provide help. You wouldn't likely to get help from the TA as he don't follow the office hour schedule.
Good class and good prof! If you're interested in the topic this will be a super easy class. He mixes the modules up with videos, diagrams, and text so it doesn't seem very long even if it's pretty content-heavy. Labs are easy to do but take a lot of time. Overall would recommend!
Have taken 2 of his classes. Lectures are great, he makes high quality videos beforehand and the accompanying lessons are thorough and clear. Weekly labs are A LOT of work (3-4 hrs) for 2% each. But hes preparing you/letting you practice important things before tests, so its helpful in the end.
he got me interested in this topic from what started out just as an elective. Amazing prof with great teaching abilities. defo go to office hour and introduce yourself :)
Grades came back really slow and sometimes the feedback wasn't super clear. The TA I got was a pretty hard grader and a lot of things needed to be specific. Easy to understand, lots of reading and videos. Labs were long/wordy but pretty easy. You also tend to do a lot of work for assignments that aren't worth that much. (Textbook was free)
He put so much time and effort into his lecture videos! There was a particular video where we were learning about river discharge, and he went all the way to the Fraser River to record the video! I took the course online, he was very accessible. Lab assignments took up significant time on a weekly basis, but were very helpful! Highly recommended!
Dr. Perkins seems to care a lot about what he is teaching and he is very engaging in his lectures. One small thing is that he takes forever to release grades and you also can't see your current mark on canvas. Also, labs take a long time but are worth very little. Overall, he is a pretty decent prof. He edits his lecture videos very well too.
Andrew had a different approach to teaching online. Since it was an intersession course, lectures and tutorials were quite heavy. Found myself reading and teaching myself the concepts most of the time.
Took as an online course and his format of teaching style was great. Easy and straightforward to understand. Participation made sure you stay concentrated on the materials for exam.
If you like GEOG, it's such a fun class. The exams were fairly easy as well. Did his best to explain the content and keep us engaged. The only confusing choice was giving us new material in the first half of the lecture before both exams, but otherwise I loved it.
Great guy, great lectures, super easy to follow. Labs were heavy and sometimes really tricky, but the TAs heelped a lot. Weekly lab quizzes online, but not too challenging. Overall, a very fun and interesting course
Dr. Perkins's lectures are top tier. He puts so much work into them, and really emphasizes the material that will be tested, so you're not in the dark. His free textbook has short readings for each lecture, rather than huge chapters like for other classes. Exams are fair, but labs and lab quizzes definitely require lots of work each week.
Lots of work outside main course due to having a lab, so be prepared for weekly chapters and lab pre readings. Overall not that demanding, lectures are engaging and helpful
I have not yet completed this class, but this is your sign to not take it unless you are a geography major. I have NEVER had a more unclear grading expierence, WAY too many labs quizzes, quizzes, finals and assignments and the canvas grade calculator does not work. VERY unorganized If you want a cool science credit for GPA, this is not the course.
Andrew is an amazing lecturer, and overall super kind and smart. He's a great teacher, funny, and gives great lectures. He's entertaining and engaging, and he's also just so passionate at what he does and you can tell. Quizzes were not too hard and he gives so many resources for studying the material. AWESOME GUY!!
Gave short summaries of textbooks chapters instead of entire chapters. Clearly passionate. Mainly graded by 3 tests, labs, short weekly worksheets, and a lab final test. As long as you stay on top of things and do the short readings you'll be fine. Great prof held back by a terrible TA, the lab sections sucked. Test questions were often tricky.
Andrew is kind and accessible. However, the tutorial assignments we have to do each week require over 6 to 7 hours PLUS we have to sometimes do components of a project on top of that. However, given that this is an intersession course, it is somewhat understandable (even though my other intersessions do not require nearly as much work).
Took this online as an elective and it's honestly not bad. Yes, there's a ton of short assignments/mini projects each week but you honestly just need 2 days to do the (easy) readings then input all your answers for the questions he provides beforehand. Intersession so it's really just 6 weeks of putting up with this if you want 4 credits.
Worst Professor, there are so many assignments per week and he is a very tough grader. Dont take this course with him..
Very tough course with him. All the people giving him 5 stars are either lying or got lucky with there group members. Work load is way to much and grading is very tough.
Hardest 3rd year course you will take. Extremely heavy content. Rubrics look easy..... he grades a lot harder than what is shown for assignments. Material is interesting but this class was just so stressful.
(took intersession) I'm puzzled by the recent negative ratings. I found this class to be very manageable, tests were fair, and the content was relevant and interesting. Only qualm was that he didn't respond to emails.
Andrew is a very passionate person and it shows. There are really fun and interactive demonstrations during lectures. I think that the lecture quizzes were easy but there were a couple questions that weren't in his provided lecture notes, so studying for them isn't as straightforward as other courses.
Professor is energetic and passionate about the material. His lectures are actually useful and are not likely to put you to sleep.
Very entertaining lectures. Pretty clear about what was gonna be on quizzes and tests
Andrew Perkins is the best prof ever. 111 was a great class, however 312 is quite a bit harder. It was online with barely any lecture videos, just lots of readings, but he is very passionate and the class is very interesting. Everyone should take one of his classes at some point.
Andrew was amazing, and the course was very well-structured and easy to follow. He was approachable and understanding whenever students were confused or needed extra support. My only remark is that there are bi-weekly labs take up a lot of time but are only worth 2% each.
Andrew gives out really engaging lectures, sometimes boring but most of the time its the opposite. No textbook for this course, only online readings that he gives out online. That being said, you need to pay attention in class, some questions do come from his lectures verbally. Lots of online-lab work (2-3 hours a week), TA's can be hit or miss
Very good lecturer, just a heavy course.
