Quite possibly the best professor I had in my first year. A little bit anal on keeping the class quiet, but explains things really well, and cracks the occasional joke. Very helpful in office hours.
He's articulate and witty, comfortable with himself, and confident. His lectures are interesting with the uses of exotic descriptions like "massaging and juggling the equations" and "sneak up on the integral or else it'll blow up". His midterms are not that tough (that is, if you do the homework). Easygoing and smiles a lot.
Very nice guy and extremely helpful during office hour, but he teaches OK.
Firstly, the course itself is TOUGH. He grades VERY tough as well on the midterms. But nonetheless, given the tough course, I'm really glad to have him as a prof. He explains concepts very clearly and encourages class participation. He's excellent with office hours. Great notes and takes a lot of care in producing hwk solutions for us. Very good!
The class is hard but he is really helpful, he has good notes and actually made me want to go to his class.
Very difficult course, if you're not the mathy type, but a great prof. Teaches very well, very organized, but a hard marker for the midterms! However, if you approach him after class, he will gladly clear things up (but he doesn't answer your homework questions until after they're marked, only gives hints) In summary-Good prof, challenging course.
The class average was 54% at the end. Our grades were soooo low... He did no scaling!
really, really hard marker...class avg = 54%.... avoid at all cost!
I needed a 300 level Math course, and I'm glad I decided to take this course with him. He gives good notes and talks in a voice that doesn't put one to sleep. A fair marker. I believe he made this course easier and more interesting. Thanks, Prof. Rechnitzer!
Hes pretty good at explaining the material, and funny too. Tests are reasonable but challenging
I had Andrew for both Math 220 and Math 340. He is the Math prof I have ever had(I am a math major so I've had my fare share), his teaching style is amazing and crystal clear. He is a tough marker, especially in Math 220, but it is a hard course.
Out of a class of 46 people TWO get above an 80%. Checked 3 times that he's taught it, highest mark has been a mid 80 twice. The other profs target a similar average but are more willing to grant marks above an 80 (which is what you need to qualify for math 320). Preventing grade inflation is one thing but this guy's got to get over himself.
very good and helpful prof. go to office hours!
Andrew has a great teaching style. He speaks in a way that keeps you from falling asleep which is quite remarkable for a math prof! Be warned, this is not an easy course and the class average is usually an F before scaling.. you just gotta make it over that bell curve ;)
Andrew lectured my first calculus class. He goes through things very thoroughly and clearly in an organised way, with lots of examples, and keeps the class very quiet so it's easy to focus. Lecturing, he's very dry and stern, but he's actually the nicest guy. He'll help you out with stuff, respond to emails. Hope I get another class of his.
BEST MATH TEACHER EVER! Everything he says makes sense.
He is a great professor and teaches extremely well don't get me wrong... but I feel that the marking was a little unforgiving. If you're smart, then just work hard and you'll do fine. I wish I had taken this course more seriously from the beginning.
I've never liked math and always hated my math teachers, but he is definitely one of my fave teachers & 1 of the best teachers I've ever had.He makes everything so easy,I love the way he explains. His Australian accent makes this class surprisingly NOT boring. He is a hard teacher tho, and his exams are hard but if you do the homework you'll be fine.
i only failed one course at ubc and this is it. he marks way too hard
The first midterm was way too difficult. It did not reflect the difficulty level of the homework questions. If you want to avoid a fail, you may want to avoid this class.
The poster below me is corect- first midterm was way too hard with an average in the 40's. We just wrote the second and IT WAS WAY WORSE! Difficulty totally eclipsed the practice midterm and homework/textbook questions. Its kind of funny, because he's actually a clear and concise teacher (if a bit pompus), but his midterms are pure bs. Avoid!
He makes the course pretty hard, the midterms are super challenging, but he is a great teacher, and he is super friendly and cooperative if you ask him questions
This is an awesome teacher he makes the course very difficult but you feel like you really get a course that is worth your money. He is super friendly and nice if you talk to him after class but he is also pretty strict about coming late and you cant use a laptop in his class. Awesome prof overall
Awesome prof! He is really clear in class on class material and explanins everything really well. Also extremely helpful outside of class and very friendly and easy to talk to! He really cares about his students. However, his exams are not easy, our first midterm average was a fail. Overall very good prof!
He was fantastic. An incredibly difficult yet interesting course. Plus. He's australian!! Amazing teacher.
Teaches way too fast with little explanation, impossible to listen and take notes at the same time as he goes through material so quickly
Just take his class. He'll tell you to put your "phones away" and "laptops off and away!". He also says "quiet please!!!" a lot. But overall he was really nice and clear. His occasional humour was hilarious.
Don't listen to anybody that says he is too difficult or goes through material too quickly. It is one of UBC's toughest first year courses, and there is so much material. It really isn't his fault. He is very helpful in office hours, after class or by email. He is more than fair and you can tell genuinely cares about his students learning
This is a very difficult class, exams are super hard no matter how much you study. This Professor was good but I thought he marked very strictly. He does not allow any electronics or chatting in class. He will stop until people stop talking. This is helpful for those that need super quiet to learn. He moves through the material very quickly.
Super helpful & nice prof! This course is very difficult, but if you try your best From the Begining of the course you will do great if not you will fail! Go to office hours for help!
This is a very tough course regardless of the teacher. Use the textbook a lot, it helps if you want to pass. Andrew is helpful but moves along very fast is class and sometimes skips steps in order to finish the lesson. Tutorials are not very helpful at all, but you get participation marks! good luck with math 184!
Great prof. Explanation is clear and he is really helpful. He didn't give us quizes as other profs did so we had to do well in midterms and final. He is a humorous guy.
He has good notes and he really cares about his students, if you need help and ask him during office hours or after class he is very patient and takes time to explain things until you get it. awesome prof!
He is not tough it is the course that is tough. He does great job teaching material tho. Lots of people had a lot worse profs. Class average is always 65. 2 midterms were tough and final was really tough. Be warned. Read the book and do suggested homework problems and get help from him or tutor if your struggling. He is very helpful one on one.
Andrew is the kind of professor that expects his students to know everything prior to the class. In my personal opinion, there were specific steps he skips which made it confusing and difficult to learn. I would only suggest having Rechnitzer as a prof if a students wants to pursue a mathematics degree.
Awesome teacher, really funny and a brings a refreshing element of humor to his lectures. The homework for this course was pretty doable, however his tests were a bit tricky, and he has a tendency to mark pretty harshly, at least on the midterm that is.
Great prof but he marks too harshly. Also, he requires you to typeset your homework (while other profs do not) which means add 1-2 hours ontop of the completion time for each homework assignment.
Friendly and helpful, and good lecturer. You will have a good laugh at his iron fist against phones/ laptops in class. Brutally harsh with marks, prepare your GPA.
Really good prof, super clear and concise. It's a hard course and slightly pedantic. He'll get you through and slowly wean you off using your cellphone in class. He's Australian so you can just listen to him all day. Easy on the eyes as well.
He doesn't just "do" math. What's more important, he gives a good historical background when necessary and proofs theorems sometimes to make students see what math is and where formulas and all come from. He in an amazing guy, super cool, always joking, and with a weird Australian accent
Funny in class. Not funny when you get your midterm marks back. lol
He explains concepts really well and makes lectures entertaining.
Andrew is a great maths professor. Amazing lectures. He explains everything clearly and focus not only on calculations but proof as well. Many examples on the lecture. Also: Harsh marking scheme and hard midterms. Constantly "nagging". Do exercise or you'll fail. Recommend him if you have a decent calculus background.
I have never seen an instructor so effectively teach a course. His lectures were hilarious and fun, I would look at the clock and be disappointed that it was almost over. It doesn't matter if you're in maths, you're thinking about being in maths, or you hate maths with a burning passion... find a way to get Andrew Rechnitzer.
The Good: Prof. Rechnitzer explains things relatively clearly and is very helpful when you ask him to clarify a specific topicquestion. The "Bad": His midterms are "deadly"--very long with several particularly challenging questions. I would focus on doing the practice midterms (and finals for finals) to prepare. Final class avg: 57%.
He's great for his accent, I think. He nags way too much. Won't allow phonesdevices. Stuffy classroom. Messy-ish writing.
Your first math class after highschool is so much harder, but Andrew Rechnitzer teaches the material really well. He is very helpful if you need it, and will answer any question respectfully (even if it is basic). His tests were the hardest out of all the profs, (51 then 45% average for midterms), but those end up scaling. Our final average was 57%.
Andrew's lessons cover the material you need to know and adds a little historical background as well. He is a hard marker, with killer midterms, but scaling will get you to about the same regardless of the class you're in. He's sarcastic and snarky, but in a way that shames you into doing the work. Put effort in the class and you'll be fine.
Lectures were fast-paced. It IS a difficult course as it is, but the midterms and finals were all incredibly difficult. Andrew has a genuine interest in teaching "real mathematics", though, so that may be where it comes from. If you're in it for the grades... you might not be so happy, but he teaches well and is nice to look at (and listen to)!
enjoyed going to his class
Worst professor I ever had! He is so terrible
Fast-paced, he is also annoying
A very funny professor and a good teacher. However, his constant complaints about laptops, phones etc. get annoying and he is an EXTREMELY tough grader. Get 1 thing wrong at the end of a 5 mark question? 0 marks for you!
He's a good teacher: he's clear and funny and answers questions. However he is a little intimidating and isn't really patient if you don't understand and keep asking.
His notes are decent, but are often proofs instead of example problems. His quizzes are BRUTAL. The class average for every quiz we did was about 20-30%.... He's not a bad guy, but expect a VERY difficult term with him. P.S he wears the same jeans every day. He also has a cool accent and likes to say "blah" and "nagging" a lot.
Really good prof. Keeps us interested with the occasional pun/rant. Really helpful when it comes to asking doubts and teaching you difficult topics. Office hours are extremely useful!
His notes are clear and he's great at going back to clarify concepts. He is also hilarious. The quizzes however, are brutal- class average was generally 30%- and are challenging to finish in the time frame. But those end up being scaled anyways. The final was fair but challenging.
Probably one of the funnier profs I've come around and safe to say one of the better ones as well. His notes are good and the questions he shows in class are helpful. He answer students questions thoroughly and quickly (like he knows what your asking before you do). Quizzes were difficult not to mention the little time given. Final wasn't that bad.
Good choice for a prof. He explains pretty well, and will answer any question you have. He can be a little judgmental, especially if you're using phones or laptops in his class, but all-in-all, a great teacher
Super Amazing Professor!!! I never get bored in his lecture due to amazing lecture delivering skills. Clear and easy to follow!
Good prof
Great lecturer, but the quizzes and finals aren't a piece of cake. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he walks you through everything and going to class will make things make more sense. Andrew has a sarcastic sense of humor that make lectures a bit less boring. He uses a chalkboard, so make sure to sit closer if you want to see anything.
So lucky to have him first year. I'm a science student and this class is supposed to be for engineers, but I am so glad I took this instead. I would suggest to any student, no matter what faculty, to take 100 with Andrew.
Never get bored during his class. He is hilarious and keeps the lectures interesting with his jokes. Be prepared to work though, this course is no way an easy one
Great prof, much more exciting and humorous than most math professors! Notes are very useful. His handwriting is sometimes illegible and grammar could improve. I wish he didn't call out people who are late as he doesn't know their story (if they studied all night/had class far away). Office hours are very useful, do go if you ever need help!
Who thinks this prof is great? Who does not think this prof is great? Well you can start by putting your phone away - he's great! Fun lectures and easy to understand.
As far as math101 is concerned, he is a nice lecturer. He goes through all the concepts slowly so everyone can follow up even if you do not know any integration before. Still, his choices for in-class examples could be better. Some of them just do not help students at all. The exams were brutal though he may not be the professor who makes the exams
Andrew is by far my favourite professor during my first year at UBC. I was in his class which was held at 9am, however, I almost never find myself falling asleep during his lectures because he makes math less complicated & fun! Also, he has a great sense of humour. He goes through lectures at a normal and resonable pace. Highly recommended!!
Andrew is an amazing lecturer and he explains concepts really well! He makes hard concepts easier to understand! This course is really hard and requires you to practice a lot of questions!
Andrew Rechnitzer is a portrait of altruism, having co-written multiple calculus textbooks not for monetary gain, but out of the pure desire to spread mathematical knowledge. This man could have become as wealthy as James Stewart, even constructing an integral mansion of his own, yet he has chosen to reject this path by offering his books for free.
Pros: - accent - seems to really enjoy the subject - fun jokes - class notes are great Cons: - class notes are great, so I ended up doing a lot of note-copying off the board, but I know some people don't write a single word and do fine so YMMV - practice exams feels a little lacking sometimes - hard questions on exams but generally passable
Overall, a very caring and clear instructor. He really made an effort to try and assist students any way he can during this weird transition of classes becoming online. Pros: if you fall behind, he won't make you feel bad and can help you get right on track in no time. Just make sure you make an effort of trying to get help before it's too late.
Unbelievably unfair testing. 15% free marks for completing pointless online assignments, but then the class was coming in with a very good average into the final. And the final was unbelievably unfair. Pure speed and algebra, nothing testing your conceptual understanding of the material. Ridiculous final meant to destroy the average. Unfair.
Prof Rechnitzer did a fantastic job of teaching during the pandemic. He often looked to the chat for class input, and made the class more interactive than simple clicker questions. He showed genuine concern for student mental health and well being, and is both a great professor and a great human being. Would definitely take again!
Prof Rechnitzer did an amazing job teaching during an online term! He taught proofs and concepts in a way that is clear and easy to understand. He kept the class engaging and was receptive to feedback. He also seems to genuinely care about his students' well being and is super encouraging whenever you ask a question! Best prof ever!
Fantastic prof! The best math prof I've had so far. Explains concepts very clearly, engages students during lectures, and easy to talk to. I would love to take another class of his!
Incredibly engaging lecturer, super fun accent, interesting humour. He explains things pretty clearly, but he goes a bit too fast at times. Very tough midterm and homework but very simple final.
I found MATH 220 to be a very difficult class. The midterm and final are worth the majority of your grade, and the assignments are very tough. However, Andrew made the class not entirely terrible. He's a great lecturer and a good person if you get to know him. He co-authored the PLP, so he knows what he's teaching and communicates it very well.
very articulate
I don't know why he have 4.4/5, the midterm grade is just post, the marking is so harsh, this guy actually destroy me life, I want to major in math, it seen impossible right now.
He seem don't want student to pass this course, more student fail, he is more happy. just don't take it, and he is always the coordinator in this course.
very good lecturer
Andrew is one of my absolute favourite professors! MATH 220 was such a fun course, and Andrew's jokes, reactions, and advice carried that entire experience for me. The content can be challenging for students with no proofs background, but this course is an entry to significantly harder courses, so it needs to teach the bare minimum, which it does.
Good lecturer. Course's material/HW is somewhat sloppy (minor errors, hw posted late, etc.) relative to other courses. Expect exams to be "don't expect to finish all the questions"-esque. Does the annoying math prof thing where they don't answer questions they think are dumb, but won't tell you why they think it's a dumb question.
So far, his lectures have been the most engaging and fun ones I have had at UBC. Highly recommend his section if you are taking MATH 220.
Math 220 was a pretty difficult course with all things considered, but Andrew made the content very digestible with his lectures and humour. He was always available after class for clarification on the weekly homework and any other questions. If you have to take this course, make sure to take it with him!
Andrew is a fantastic professor. His lectures are captivating, engaging, and he explains well. It's hard to get distracted since he doesn't really allow phones in class. His YouTube videos are really helpful, though his exams tend to be somewhat difficult with a time constraint. Bonus points for his Aussie accent (not bad on the eyes either...)
definitely the best lecturer i have had so far. i usually skip most of my lectures, but I am always excited to attend Rechnitzer's lectures as he makes them productive and entertaining
I found the course incredibly difficult but recognize this content is not my thing. His lectures were top notch and complimentary videos were great as well. He's quite respectful and will answer questions thoughtfully. Assignments felt a bit lengthy and difficult at times. Exams were brutal but scaled.
Prof is really good, but the practice exam is 10000000% different then actual exam...
Overall a good professor. His lectures are engaging and fun, plus he has an Australian accent. His lecture notes can be hard to follow and he doesn't post/record lecture material. He also goes over concepts quite quickly. I would recommend him for math or engineering students who are fine with learning a lot of the material outside of class.
Great lectures. However, he doesn't upload notes or anything to Canvas. Lectures are not recorded either.
Overall his lectures are fun, but he doesn't upload anything to canvas, if you miss a part or a day of the lecture you would have to find someone to get the notes. His lectures are fast paced, so most of the times I just write down all the notes in class without understanding what the content meant. His handwritings are hard to read:(
Rechnitzer was one of my favourite professors at UBC. His lectures were super engaging and he was incredible at answering student questions. He is very responsive on discord and genuinely cares about his students. His marking can be quite harsh in terms of pedantry, but the actual questions on exams are very fair in terms of difficulty.
Andrew is a fantastic lecturer and professor. His lectures are great, and he is helpful outside of class. However, the course is VERY difficult. If you want an "easier" alternative to MATH 320, I would be cautious. Although less abstract, 319 is equally rigorous; the grading is strict, the exams are tough, and the material is very challenging.
Math 100 is a tough class! Andrew makes it less tough. Clear lectures and funny jokes every once in a while + always intro to a lecture about taking care of yourself. Awesome prof with an even awesomer accent!
Amazing lecturer with a great sense of humour, and he checks in with how everyone in class is doing which is really thoughtful. This was MATH100 flavour A, and based on what I saw it wasn't necessarily harder than flavours B or C, so if you have the freedom to choose don't fret over which flavour to pick.
He does everything in his power to make sure that you are well-equipped for assessments, but this man is always angry for some reason...
Very clear lectures. Andrew understands how boring it is to listen to someone talk about math for two hours, and tries his best to make it less terrible. Also very helpful with answering questions after class.
I've not actually had him as a professor, but I've taken MATH220 this term and was really struggling to understand concepts because my prof teaches wayy too fast. But I came across his videos searching for lessons online and he has absolutely carried me through MATH220. God bless him. Dumbs things down very well, gives great examples. A+ prof
LISTEN UP!! Hes a passionate professor, he cares and loves math down to his core. He explains stuff well. BUT PLEASE FIND A WAY TO SKIP MATH 100 IF YOU DONT HAVE A QUANTITATIVE MIND. This course is awful, bane of my existence. Projects make no sense, and webworks are actually the worst invention on this planet. His lectures dont correlate to exams.
He is actually my favoriate professor so far in UBC! Amazing teacher! He does not even need textbook, he has everything in his mind and his lecture is so interesting! We need more teachers like him in this university!!! ( my other professors are so bad ;)
missed the SEI review - prof. andew rechnitzer's teaching style made abstract math feel accessible&fun! ncredibly well-structured lectures engaging with clear logical flow his explanations made tough concepts click.he genuinely cares about student's learning.inspiring supportive&remarkably effective - truly amazing from start to finish! you rock!
decent. carrying. cool guy. hmm. hard course. don't allow cell phones in class. :)
GOAT. best prof I have ever had in my life. caring, midterm and finals were super straightforward. 1000% recommended. hes textbook is goated, similar to achievements made by 'Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica - Isaac Newton' GOAT.
I don't understand why are people saying Rechnitzer is bad. He is very passionate, carrying, and he is a good male individual. He's lectures are really fun... if you come to it. The tests are really not that hard... if you do some questions in the textbook. Highly recommended!
Pretty good and well-organized lectures. Although the content is so hard, he didn't make the midterm and final difficult for us. Go to his office hour as much as possible and it's really helpful for your grade!
Dont take this prof if you have any other options,he is extremely unorganized, talks about irrelevant things for more than20minutes each class, and always seems to be mad and impatient. He doesn't post any notes, the things I learned form the lectures are not helpful for my homework and tests,I have to do great amount of extra work on my own
He's always mad and is always overly strict. NO posted notes and NO office hours whereas all other profs for sections A and B post notes and have office hours. If you want to ask questions, you have to go to the office hours of a prof teaching a DIFFERENT section. It seems like he puts minimal effort into his work as an educator. Also disorganized.
Good lectures, he really hates phones so try not to get caught but he teaches the concepts well and the midterms were pretty easy.
Honestly looking at his high rating, I expected a lot more. I do agree that compared to the other math 100 professors he is one of the better ones as I sat in other math 100 prof lecture's (other flavours) but sometimes it is hard to understand what he is talking about and I taught myself 80% of this course like many many others.
prof is great, MATH 100 is just a rough class
You are not going to understand his handwriting and there is no notes online. Don't like his attitude and DO NOT take this course unless you learned calculus in high school, you won't learn anything from him.
did a pretty solid job at explaining things in lecture, and was somewhat entertaining most of the time. not a lot to complain about with his teaching style, but also nothing super exemplary. good all around
He is honestly a good prof, not teaching the best course. He manages to make the content somewhat entertaining, but this often takes too much of the class and a lot of times, you don't learn that much in lectures as you should. Honestly try to avoid MATH 100 if you can, but otherwise, Andrew is a good prof.
Had some friends who didn't care for him as much, but I personally thought he was an incredible prof. I found his classes to be engaging, I liked his use of paper notes with a projector so it was visible for students at the back (vs chalkboard for other instructors), and he puts in an effort to make sure students are engaged
the group projects are pretty annoying because you'll get docked a ton of points for small formatting errors and stuff like that. the webworks are ridiculously long and tedious to get through (the back half of every webwork is significantly more difficult than any possible exam question). in my opinion way too much engagement focused stuff
No office hours but there's a ton of other profs that do. He tries to make the lecture engaging by asking questions but instead we waste a ton of time when he keeps asking "Show of hands, who's going to do something fun this weekend? Who's going to sleep in this weekend?" for like 30 mins. He hates phones which I respect. TAs are absolutely lost.
Prof. Rechnitzer's lectures are just the textbook in a more digestible format, but he's funny. Spends the first 10-15 min of class on a routine speech about work-life balance. Attendance not taken, but don't skip if you aren't a math whiz bc notes aren't posted. Small classes didn't help. I think I failed this course but just cuz I can't do math
RECHNITZER IS THE GOAT.
He goes through the material very fast so it is sometimes very hard to keep up especially if you haven't taken calculus in high school. The midterms were very doable though as long as you do webworks. Group projects are brutal but quite easy to get a solid mark. Final exam was difficult but you can do well if you study enough.
Andrew will be hard on you, but he cares about his students. It's hard to judge him as a prof, as Math 100 is such a structured and huge course, but he did teach the material adequately. Make sure you also watch YouTube videos and read the textbook as well, because just going to lectures will not make you pass this course.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but go to class if you didn't take IB or AP like me. Office hours are helpful depending on who the TA is. Find one that you like and track their hours. Webwork is important because that's what shows up on tests, especially for section C. Make sure you actually understand so you don't end up like me.
Has dry humour, spends a lot of time on administrative talks. His notes are kind of disorganized and don't connect well. Not bad as a prof, and genuinely cares about his students. Hates phones and tries to keep things engaging by asking questions in class, but it wastes a lot of time. Was pretty lenient with ending class early at times, though.
