This is my fave course. He is a SUPER right-wing and realist. Good lectures.
wow very clear and easy to understand
he's...animated. Know your current events and GO to class
No Comments
very right wing, anti-canadian, militaristic, but gets the job done.
pro american but still does a good job
He's a fun teacher. Always arrive 5 minutes late and you can just see his head sticking over the door. Very knowledgable. Only complaint is he makes you go to pointless tutorials.
You'll get better marks if you agree with his views, but still a good teacher.
Good prof, very energenic. Super realist
I would definitely take another of his classes again...very good lecturer!
Gives really interesting lectures and is very knowledgable...his study groups can be a pain though.
No comment... terrible
his lectures are fun- he makes the stuff interesting and doesn't try to shove it down your throat. encourages any comments but only accepts the ones he agrees with- pretend you're a realist and you'll ace the class.
Great lectures, but a condescending jerk!
Really interesting to listen to; he really knows his stuff. His biases are obvious, so you just have to judge what he says for yourself. I really enjoyed the class...I learnt SOOO MUCH! and he makes it easy enough to do weel
Sadly, you are a means to end with Richter. If you don't have anything to offer to advance his agenda you mught as well be invisible.
This man is just pure evil, if you don't agree with him god help you!
Richter is an excellent prof that really enourages class participation. His classes are by far the most interesting I have been in, and I learned more on world issues from his classes than I had in two years of poli sci courses.

Awesome prof! He's the greatest! I'll definitely take another one of his classes... as a matter of fact, I AM! :D he's a funny guy, though he does diss up alot of people.
A very funny teacher, very interesting lectures, and does a good job on explaining the information to you.
FUNNY, CONSERVATIVE, and has this stupid reader for tutorials. However, his class is informative. I suggest picking him if you can.
Excellent class. As both a teacher and an associate, professor Andrew Richter is a valuable member of the international community.
Prof. Richter may be one of the worst professors I have ever met...he is so opinionated that it overtakes the class and rules out any way of learning anything but his point of view. He should become a politicial and get out of teaching before he wrecks anymore students experiences with politics!
very neoconservative, he will fit good in the Bush's regime
Lets put it this way: I'm a straight A student and I barely managed to get a B in this class. I like his personality but don't take this class if you have future goals in mind that involve getting good marks.
Didnt find his "views" get in the way of his class - hes somewhat funny in the way he reminds me of George Costanza
Great prof. To all you tree-huggers posting, sorry he's a little right leaning, but 90% of teachers up until University are liberals, so don't complain. His lectures are very interesting and he's brilliant.
Richter's the man. If you want a good mark, you'd have to show for it. Otherwise, tough luck. Lecture's were pretty decent and interesting. Great class structure and expect to learn lots.
Richter is a very nice man & his lectures are as entertaining as can be on a somewhat boring topic. His tests are decent. If you study and do the readings, you will easily get a good mark. Although he is generally fair when it comes to marking, he can be a little bias. Overall, he is one of the better teachers out there & I'm glad I took his class
Personally I found him to be an arrogant prof who would criticize a students comments or views if they happen to conflict with his. I also found that he used your views as part of the basis of your grade, so all of you lefty's out there stay away.
Not very nice

Lots of reading and he asks a lot for the term paper. Nonetheless, he's very knowledgeable and he does want students to learn. Don't be intimidated by him though.
I found him to be very entertaining. He reminds me a lot of George Costanza. He is very smart and a little biased, but who isn't. His classes are usually very interesting. The only thing I can fault him for, is that he is a very hard marker when it comes to essays or essay questions.
Two sayings you'll be hearing a lot of: "No, I've never heard that" and "Thats not true." Entertaining guy though...really into his subject matter.
george costanza's clone with a beard, really knows his stuff, overall a very good teacher
Very unapproachable prof, unreasonably hard marker & lack of clarity. Though knowledgable of material being taught he uses this to undermine student integrity. Had high expectations & interest prior to taking course, VERY disppointed. Favorite phrases, "No you're wrong." & "I don't think so." With him on staff, University reputation is at stake.
I had him for intro to can. foreign policy and he was a terrific prof. Yes he can be a tough marker however the guy knows his stuff very well but what I like about him is if he doesnt know the answer, he'll openly admit it. Yes he's def. more right leaning than other professors however its a nice break from the typical elitist left winf profs.
Excellent lecturer - witty and VERY knowledgeable & passionate about his field. Probably more than anyone should be about Foreign Policy. I learned more in his class than in a semester of schooling. A bit disorganized, but he is a prof after all. A breath of fresh air in the midst of the often Leftist/Marxist Poli Sci/Comm departments.
After being away from school for several years, was great to see someone that understands the real world. He's a realist, so if you buy the Marxist BS you may not enjoy his class. Broad range of topics for the paper. Do what he asks and expects and you'll do well. Lots of readings but all relevant to the course.
Almost impossible to take in this guys lectures, he is knowledgable in the field but very opinionated and unable to"work with a student" in order to shape an idea in their mind it's an I'm right you're wrong thing with him.The man may well be an expert in his field but he teaches a 1st year course with 3rd to 4th expectations of students.regretable
DO NOT TAKE HIM worst prof in all of university very unapproachable
Best prof I've had. A bit intimidating because he knows his stuff. Entertaining when he points out openly in lecture if you're wrong which makes lecture go smoother as people are less likely to raise their hands and talk for the sake of talking. Very good prof, very fair.
He's not affraid of giving his opinion and if you give the wrong answer he'll openly admit it to the class. Extremely right-wing, pro-American but still interesting. Textbook is fairly easy but the tutorial and reader he has is pointless.
Best prof in the poli sci department. not afraid to tell you if you're wrong in the middle of class. Approachable but kind of intimidating at time. Definitely would recommend. Lots of readings though.
Interesting class, and i thought tutorials were lots of fun and great way to clear stuff up. Good class overall, only suggestion is: if u dont know the answer, dont attempt. hell put u in ur place...
Rude. Thinks he's the best thing in the room/no respect for students. Cannot unnderstand a thesis more than 1 line long. Questioned my sources for an essay with actually checking them out...and they were credible. Doesn't care whether or not you can see what's on the board.
He is very knowledgeable and smart. However, he may be intimidating. I learned so much in his class and I really recommend it for everyone. His exams are very fair.
Really knows what he is talking about, but if you answer wrong or he doesnt like your answer he will let the whole class know which is funny in my opinion. not bad overall.
Dr. Richter is great. He's opinionated and there is nothing wrong with that. Be prepared in his class and don't take it personal if he tells you your wrong...chances are he didn't take the time to understand what you meant...Hey no ones perfect... but I enjoy the class, he's so funny, and you can learn alot if your open.
If you attend every lecture you'll have all the exam material, I never took more than a page of notes per class. Readings are not essential as exam questions on them answer themselves. He is blatantly conservative and highly critical but very interactive in spite of this.
He knows his stuff, if you show up to class and pay attention you will be ok for the exams. But avoid talking to him at all costs. He has no respect for students. He even walked by my desk a number of times during the exam and tapped is fingers on my table just for the heck of it. Very rude and distracting. Avoid his classes if possible.
He's harsh on students but I think it's hilarious. Expects answers which one wouldn't normally expect. Tutorial is fantastic really enjoy it. His writing is very poor bring your reading glasses. I'd take it again though he's very straight forward and to the point.
Very pretentious. He is always right and you are always wrong, basically. Don't disagree with him. He will mark you tough if your views don't agree with his on the term paper. Midterm was straightforward, no complaints there. I wouldn't take another one of his classes. IMO very poor prof.
Prof is inconsiderate, doesn't care about his students. Will ask super specific questions that first years aren't expected to know and then put students down for not knowing. Constantly boasting about how much he knows. Tests are pretty straightforward but lectures are a bit hard to understand because he goes off topic ALOT. Avoid him when you can.
His mannerisms are absolutely RUDE. once he had told a student that he didn't understand her and then proceeded to ask the entire class if anyone understood her and forces you to answer. Easy midterm, brings you down W paper and the final. Will say in his lectures that he's not going to talk about certain things & his writing is bad
hands down the best professor i have ever had. if your a liberal you may not like it though
He sugar coats nothing, tells you when you're wrong and isn't always nice about it, but he knows what he's talking about and won't jerk you around. You know what he's looking for because he straight up tells you.
I've had Richter for multiple classes, if you get offended by how he speaks to people then you probably shouldn't be in political science. You can disagree with him, but it better be an informed opinion with factual basis or he'll shut you down. Extremely fair grader, and all marks given are his, not the TA's. Incredibly knowledgeable and informed.
Dr Richter was a great teacher! He is hillarous, in a salty and grumpy kind of way. If you are easily offended, don't take his class as his comments can be construed as rude. You have to show up to class, as he posts NOTHING online. Read the notes and books, and you should do fine.
Very intelligent professor, sometimes may come off as being arrogant, and a know it all. Utilizes class time very well, but does not use powerpoints or the online website, be prepared to copy notes from the board, and pay attention to what he says. Make sure you're in tune with the the news and current events, since this is what the class is about.
Poor personality; very pretentious, arrogant, and rude at times. But if you go to his office hours to speak one-on-one, he is considerably nicer and more compassionate. He is highly conservative, right-wing, and militaristic. Richter is extremely knowledgeable and brilliant. His lectures were great and in depth. Do the readings and go to class.
If you're someone who genuinely enjoys political science or international relations, you will like his classes. Don't answer any questions unless you absolutely know its right. He will make you feel bad for answering the wrong question, but it kind of adds a spicy element to the class. He's very funny in a very hostile manner.
Richter offers the dying ember that is a realist/right-wing perspective towards politics in the scholastic environment. More importantly, Richter immensely focuses on objectivity with his leaning opinion, and especially expects the same when discussing topics with his class. One mult. choice exam, and 12-page Paper (w/ great topical choices).
Andrew Richter simply knows what he's talking about, which is refreshing for UWin. Easily offended liberals shouldn't take his class. He brings a conservative/realist approach to his lectures. If you have a question (and are not easily intimidated) he'll be happy to answer, and if he doesn't know, he'll figure it out for you. Best prof I've had
Make sure you attend every lecture and take notes of EVERYTHING he says. His notes are a general outline of what he wants you to learn and you'll have to organise your notes out of class. Honestly he doesn't put that much effort into teaching the class and is pretty condescending but his classes aren't too difficult to get an A in.
Richter is a well-respected professor that provides you with quality lectures and course material. The class is organized in a very simple manner- multiple choice midterm, 10-12 page term paper, and a final exam. Read the material, attend every class, and you shouldn't have a problem achieving at least a 60-75%.
Richter is extremely well informed and passionate about what he teaches. Grading and expectations are reasonable. He condescends to uninformed students in class discussion and makes his stances well known, but that keeps things interesting. No slides, but studying from the book and your notes is reasonable at this level. Id recommend him.
Very knowledgeable, and cares about what he teaches. He comes off as rude, but you'll only experience that if you say things that are vastly incorrect. Helpful to have some background knowledge going into his classes. Only tests on what he says in class, plus a little from the coursepack. Go to class and pay attention, you'll do great.
He really is aggressive with how he interacts with students but I dont think he means to be disrespectful. He just really lets you know youre wrong. He explains everything quickly but very effectively. It might help you to have some basic knowledge of general world history. If youre sensitive and not 100% sure you know the answer do not answer.
the best ever
One of the best profs in the department. Anyone who actively participates and attends class will leave with much more knowledge about the world than they did coming in. Remember this is a polysci course so you should pay attention to current events that are most likely found in a newspaper, not Instagram.
A standout in the department, extremely knowledgeable on defence, IR and related subjects. Assessments are few, and they are graded/composed fairly. He possesses a right wing view, but if you cant at least consider and respect an opposing view you have no business in political science.
Dr. Richter has taught me about Canadian Politics. When I first attended his class I had no idea what I was doing. But, as soon as you start reading the assigned textbook, you will gradually start to get the hang of it. Be prepared to read a lot. Lots of stories. The exams are fair.
Dr Richter is among my favourite political science professors. He tells things how it is, lots of readings but nothing too difficult. Do the work and go to class and you'll easily get an A. His exams and papers are very easy, nothing out of space and is all relevant information. He does'nt ask too much of students, just a lot of reading.
Lots of reading but if you do it you will pass. He was my favorite prof this semester - he is so funny and really makes the lectures interesting! Watch his lectures - they help a lot to understand the reading material better. Also make sure you do ALL the readings. He is great.
Andrew is adamant about not helping students in acquiring the course material. Withheld final grade of paper so students do better in the class, left out the entire section of week 12 and fused the last 4 weeks of material into 2 weeks before the final exam, also expected you to do week 12 yourself. Adds unnecessary burdens to time constraints.
Dr. Richter's class this term was all online consisting of pre-recorded lectures and he doesn't teach off of a powerpoint so make sure you do the readings and make your own notes to do well. The labs were very fun and enjoyable. The quizzes and exams were easy as long as you attend all labs and do all the readings.
Great guy! Entertaining and funny class. Learned a lot. His classes are not for the faint of heart, however. He can be abrasive if you are not used to people being tough on you, which tends to put people off from him. Very old school, do exactly what he tells you, and let his words flow off like water on a duck. Easy peasy class to get 90's in.
I can't tell if this guy absolutely loves of despises teaching. If students don't know the answer to a question only he considers obvious it is basically the end of the world and he literally acts like everybody is stupid. However, he is kind of funny and gives fair exams. NO SLIDESHOW AT ALL he only talks so no choice but to go to class. Avoid
Very out of touch and unhelpful, he refuses to post slides or any information that could help you study. Forcing you to rely on broad reading, which he hardly explains in any comprehensive way. Very unhelpful and rude, don't take his classes
spent more time preaching about his own views in class and berating his own strawman of what young people are like than teaching any material whatsoever. frankly pretty stupid and petty person, likely due to the fact he is much smaller in stature than the average man. i did fine in the class, but it was annoying, and i don't think he tries hard.
Avoid at all costs
Horrible prof, unreadable handwriting, rude, isn't flexible and all of this for a one-year course ggs.
Avoid this prof at all cost it's horrible it's so hard he makes it so hard, I'm getting so much anxiety just walking through that door. If this class wasn't a requirement I would never take it with this prof.
Not the perfect person, but nobody is. Don't take the class if you're too reliant on slides
Not the best professor, but not the worst. Very old school, doesn't use Brightspace, no lecture slides, mainly readings and material in class. If you don't skip, do the readings and sit at the front, you'll do fine.
This class is the way high school teachers describe university. He is difficult and has clear expectations, but if you come to get a good grade and put in the effort, you will get an 80% or higher. Go to every lecture, do NOT ask stupid questions, and STUDYYYY both his notes and the weekly readings. It's not easy, but uni shouldn't be. Try hard.
Very old school and doesn't use brightspace, he doesn't use lecture slides but writes important info on the board - the handwriting is a little hard to decipher but he goes over the topics during the lecture - if you study for the exam you'll get a good grade, and if you research the essay topics it's not too hard.
