Man does he talk fast, but I wouldn't trade this teacher for the world. He's young, energetic, and helpful. Assignments are never bigger than 5 or 6 problems and tests are either 4 or 8 problems. I agree Calc II is a difficult calculus class but he'll help you through it.
He says "right?" as if it was punctuation, but he is a really nice guy and fun to talk to. His effort to try and help is commendable, but doesn't always work. He may not be the best, but he is the best you?re going to get. I would take him for calc II again for sure.
He explains well and is good to get along with, however his tests are very difficult and he is very specific with work shown.
Great guy, but an extremely tough grader. I took this class for the second time and still only got a C. He makes every effort he can to help though, and is better than the first Calc teacher I had.
He talks pretty fast. Read the book. Just stay on top of the subject and it should be fine. The course is challenging but hard work will pay off
He is hard
Decent guy. Defines rather than explains or shows. Class moves fast so if you fall behind your screwed. Basically teaches out of the book, but the book shows more. All assignments are worth ridiculously little points (2-4) and disproportional to the work so test grades will make or break you. Plan on being a regular in the math lab.
Seems like a really nice guy, but teaching is not his thing. Talks super fast and moves through the class very quickly with brief explanations. The book felt like more of a teacher than he was. If you have no previous exposure to discrete math, find a different teacher or expect to spend four nights a week in the math lab.
I do not like this teacher. He gives homework online at MathZone. He gives studies guides, but his tests are nothing like the homework or study guide.Whatever you do, do not take him. You only have 2 test and the final. Homework, and all of the tests are only wroth 25% of your grade. I repeat DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Very hard class. He goes extremely fast and skips through a lot of detailed algebra. I guess as long as your algebra skills are VERY strong you will do well. For me however, it's been 4 years since my last math class so I really struggled and put in at least 6-8 hours of out-of-class studying to only get a "C".
Goes kind of fast, but makes the class easy. Homework is done online and he doesn't give quizzes. Tests are not hard if you study, and he gives 10 bonus points on tests.
If you actually meet the prerequisites, do the work, go to lab office, and stop by occasionally in his office or e-mail him, then you will pass the class. If you are a slacker, you will fail. It is that simple.
Applied Calc.. YUCK! Goes very fast. Im Stupid when it comes to math and he didn't explain anything well! He used webwork and the program is the hardest thing to use ever. its nothing like mymathlab. Most of the time he didn't even know how to enter in the correct answers. tests are hard like 10 questions and under. had to withdraw bc i was failing
The course is easy, but with this instructor it's very hard. DON'T take him. Lots of homework 40 question minimum online . three tests and there is no quizzes. HARD!
If your algebra skills are not good, you will fail this class. Specially with this instructor.
Awesome guy, little rough around the edges as a teacher. Likes to say the word "right" a lot. Said it 32 times in less than 10 min. Enjoyed his class overall. If you are willing to do the work, he is a good teacher.
Don't take this professor if you want to pass this class. I easily got an A in college algebra and got a 67 in this course, even with a tutor. Homework took 4+ hours per assignment, but I got an A on each assignment. That said, I failed 2 of the three tests because he made them ridiculously hard. He's not a professor who cares about his students.
Dr. Schwartz is a good person and you can tell he means well. He will help if you go to his office. That being said he is very difficult. He only passes about a third if his students and he is very particular. The tests are long and pretty hard so be prepared.
Should really get to know his students. Gives us 5 chapters to study and only 3 questions on quiz , don't make any sense.
If the whole class is having issues with a particular problem, you can bet it's going to be on the test. It's not about knowing or understanding the material with him, it's about how clever you can be to solve the problems he gives you. Half of the class will drop. Only about half that are left will pass. Had more than one class with him.
Dr. Schwartz was the least helpful professor I have ever had. I have always found math rather difficult, but I left his class even more confused and frustrated. I would not recommend his class at all.
If you care about passing DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR, if you do YOU WILL FAIL. i am currently in his class and it is the biggest mistake i have ever made, i am not really good in maths and being in this class makes it even worse even with the help of a tutor i still fail the tests. he doesn't care about his student. i'm dropping the class.
Hardest teacher ever. By the time November came around, a class that started with about 28 was left with one because everyone else dropped. Not clear teaching at all, and I'm not terrible at math.
The homework is easy and it is possible to get 100% on every assignment of you are willing to put in the time. The paper quizzes are 3 questions and they are very difficult, but only worth 5% of the final grade. The tests are difficult, but decent grades are possible if you take your time on them. Prior algebra knowledge is very helpful.
The dude is terrible. If you want to pass, do not take him. Quizzes are impossible. Tests are impossible. The homework does not in anyway prepare you for both the quizzes and the tests.
Second time taking this class and still don't understand it. He says if you come in one minute late he won't take your homework and then he skips class. The tests are b.s. and the quizzes are just as hard. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Seems clear but lectures have nothing to do with quiz . Takes off points if you combine steps in showing work, forget parentheses in steps, etc even if get answer correct. multiple errors on notes and examples he shows but when you point them out he says "If I had done this it would be correct." DO NOT TAKE MATH AT SEMO-jr college it!!
He seems to put no personal interest in his student's learning and has poor leadership qualities. He does not understand how to relate the material in a sensible or reasonable fashion to the students. The online homework isn't too bad but the weight of the semester will all weigh on a few difficult, written tests. DO NOT TAKE. Worst Prof possible.
lectures seem ok but then comes quiz and test time. Got 5.5 out of 10 on quiz. Had answers correct but didn't show work the way he thought I should. On one test did not use proper method to solve, did not specify method,so he gave me zero points even though got right answer. Will take at Jr. Col this summer. If 5 min late won't let u turn homewk in
Dr. Schwartz was a professor who literally told me "It is impossible for you to pass." I struggle with math and had been going to the math lab for tutoring help, but this guy was not helpful. He had relied on his graduate student to do all the help. Schwartz made majority of grade based on exams, so end of semester hw didn't even count toward grade
I was only 2 marks away from a C which would help me pass math, being a weakling at math since the beginning of time,I had a hard time keeping up with class and had to actually learn everything on the internet using videos and what not. What I learned in class didn't seem to help me very much.
I am good in math, and I had to drop his class because of the difficulty. The homework and content are fine, but the tests (each worth 15% of your grade) are impossible. You are not allowed to use a calculator and the tests are timed. He is very poor help and expects you to know everything going in.
If you are trying to pass, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. Dr. Schwartz doesn't accept late hw even if you're 5 mins late to class, tests are 15% of your grade, lots of mistakes in the notes he makes. I'm usually a pretty decent student when it comes to math but I'm not gonna lie I failed this class. He might be by far the worst professor.
Not enough teaching. Talks for 5 minutes then work on homework. Talks way too fast as if were math geniuses which would defeat the purpose. No hands on effort to try to make us better understand the topic. No stepping out of a usual robotic zone and going out on a limb .. Bad! Most people there are on their 2nd or 3rd time being in that class......
Doesn't teach fr No partial credit
Helps alot compared to many people.
great professor that really cares about his students. always willing to help if you ask questions, but you gotta participate and actively learn.
Dr. Schwartz is amazing! He expects a lot, but he is willing to help if you are willing to work. Makes lots of jokes during class to keep things intetesting.
Dr. Schwartz allows us to ask whatever questions we want. If you don't mind coming to class prepared to ask questions, then you will do well. However, if you are a lazy learner (like some of my friends), then you will do poorly. He communicates the material effectively and answer whatever questions you ask.
Tough but fair. I learned a lot and got help outside of class.
If you want to pass, do not take Dr. Schwartz.
This was my first math class here at SEMO and I had no choice of which prof I could have. I learned pretty early in the semester getting an A was impossible. He would lecture for a very short amount of time. He made us choose the examples we wanted to see. He did not prepare us for test or homework because according to him "everything is fair game"
If you are willing to ask questions, then he will help you. If you are just trying to get an easy A then avoid him. If you wanna learn the material and more, then take.
You can pass if you ask questions. If you don't, good luck.
All quizzes and exam dates are in the syllabus so that's nice.
He's tough but fair.
Willing to help if you ask.
Its a difficult class, take any other pre-calc prof if possible, he is not the best.
I went to the class, the whole semester. Studied weeks before the exam, his review guides and everything, still had an awful experience and not the grade I wanted
He wont give any extra credit work, not even when it can help you pass by .6%. Very tough grader too.
The tests are most of the grade so be prepared for them and you will do well in the class. Also, he tells you stuff in class that isn't part of the online notes so make sure you attend regularly. He also has a very clear grading rubric so you can see how he distributes partial credit on the exams.
Will help but you gotta ask.

He really gets into it and clearly loves his research area.

really tought tests but will help if you ask for it. very nice when asking for help
i love how nice he is when you ask questions
very nicd whenhe;lgon
will healp when youask
hleps alot if you come to office hours
make sure you raise your hand to ask for halp
all the tricks he tells you in class are very helpful
tough grader but fair
Overall, great instructor. Patient with students, approachable, available out of class, responsive, respectful, breaks down problems that are simple and easy to understand, and uses a variety of examples in various degrees of difficulty. You can't really ask for a better teacher. Course is fast paced, so it requires effort. Ask questions!!
Great person overall, but in order to do well in class ask multiple questions in class and even approach him after class. Homework was an every night thing and the quizzes where every week. Homework was different from quiz and tests had very little similarity to quizzes so you never knew what to study.
Schwartz is a great professor. He has a lot of knowledge about the subject. Though he is a tough grader, I learnt a lot from his class. Taking his class helped me a lot in understanding the concept clearly. A good effort should be kept by the student in order to get an 'A' grade. Lecture notes has good quality and is valuable for future (in case).
I went to every class period. I was a very polite and respectful student the whole time. I asked questions pertaining toward the classroom material. I spent hours upon hours doing his homework and trying to understand his tests (even going to his office hours to visit to ask question). Yet I ended up having to drop the class. He doesnt care at all
you can tell he really cares. lots of your grade is based on exams but he has no control over that.
you can tell he cares
love this guy. he really breaks it down in a way I understand.
got me thru and I never undressed math well before
Good teacher, but class is so big it is hard to really have a chance to get to know him.
Ive had Dr Schwartz for 3 consecutive math classes and done well in each. Dont expect anything to come easy as thats just math in general. However Dr Schwartz will do anything and everything in his power to make sure you understand the content, all you need to do is put forward a little effort. Overall a very kind and down to earth guy.
When needing to take a math credit for a pre-requisite for other business classes, I was very hopeful in this professor. That didn't last long. Be ready to teach yourself and get absolutely awful responses to emails. Don't be fooled by the good reviews.
Imagine being so lost you don't even know what to say, or what questions to ask. When there are no questions, he moves to the next lesson. WE ARE FIVE LESSONS AHEAD WHAT IS GOING ON. I've sobbed too too hard over this class and we aren't even halfway through the semester.
I have never had a professor this terrible. He does not teach lessons, he goes over the homework and expects it to click. His "notes" are half a page long and copy and pasted directly from Lumen. He is lazy, and ignorant and he doesn't grade anything, Lumen automatically grades everything. Please, don't fall for this sorry excuse of a professor!
This professor taught me nothing. He just goes over the homework in class and is not very helpful when you have a question. I go home and teach myself the lessons and if I don't understand it I just have to deal with the bad grade. He never grades anything because it is all done on lumen. The homework, quizzes and tests give you no explanation.
He isn't really a fair teacher. Will not let you make up missed assignments. The HW and quizzes won't do anything to help your grade. I do like how the final exam score can replace your lowest test score. Tests are only 16-25 questions and the final exam had videos to help with the problems. You get a 1hr and 50 mins to take the test as well.
Will actually go over the homework problems with you if you go to class. There is also a very generous drop policy. He drops the lowest 5 homework scores, the lowest 2 quiz scores, and he'll even replace your lowest test score with the final if your score on the final is higher. Easy to get an A if you make a little effort and come to class.
His lectures line up with the homework perfectly, and has class time to answer homework questions. He is the best math professor. His lectures clearly show you how, and why this method works. Most of the homework questions have a similar video to watch as well. He makes me want to change my major to mathematics.
this professor is very nice, he goes over and explains basically all of the hw and stuff that will be on quizzes. It is mostly tests that effect your grades but hw does add up. He posted online videos, so attendance wasn't always necessary, but it helps a lot.
just come ot class. easy to pass
Good guy but not very lenient. I went to a tutor for one of his projects and the tutor did it all wrong and I got an F. He would not let me redo the project with a different tutor, even though it brought my grade down quite a bit. He's also not the best at explaining the material, as he goes 100 mph when doing it. Gives NO extra credit ever.
He really explains everything clearly and will answer any and all questions in class or through email.
Was the best maths teacher I've had thus far in any level of education. I have no idea why his reviews are poor, he really did love his job and was an excellent teacher. I would take his course again in a heartbeat.
Most of the notes are based on explanation rather than example, which is good for some people, not for me. I didn't understand many of the lectures he gave and ended up looking to the videos for help, which I felt were /much/ easier. It felt like rather than being taught by the professor I was taught by resources given by the Lumen homework website
