He has the ability to make even otherwise dry, boring classes fun. He does require quality work, but if you keep up, you will do fine. He does put people on the spot in class, which can be embarassing.

great with finding a connection of topics to students interests. He is a great lecturer-one that makes it hard to fall asleep. loves participation, and requires thoughtful work

cool guy, his class was a little boring. I would not take him again. If you are going to take him be prepared to listen to alot of lecturing. You must also partisapate alot in class room topics for part of your grade.
Sure he expects philosophy to be more than a spectator class. But I never had so much fun in class. Take his class only if you like lively conversation.
Andrew expects literacy and critical thinking skils.
The man is hillarious! Very funny and very helpful More teachers like him would make boring material easier and more enjoyable to learn. The logic class itself is rather dull, teadious and difficult work. Overall best damn teacher at SPSCC.

I feel so ethical.
Philosophers are all so confusing for me to understand and he made it make much more sense to me! He is a great person and a great teacher!
Good teacher. Didn't care for the course. Sometimes could be opininated.
He's pretty spiffy. Not an easy A, but a lot of fun! The man is hysterical!
fun and open. lively discussions but harsh grading on papers. generally helpful. doesnt always clarify. picks favorites and SOMETIMES disregards things/ becomes disrespectful of others. takes a bit of time and effort to really get a good grade.
If anybody else would have led me through Formal Logic I probably would have slit my wrists! The class is painfully confusing, basically useless, and bordering on retarded. However,Andrew(along with his uncanny-kinda'spooky-Simpsons knowlege)can save you!
He is a great teacher, you will learn a lot and the work isn't grueling! No stress and tons of learning! :)

Obsessed with Simpsons and Uranus jokes. Makes you think about stuff. Had a great time, wish I could go back and do it all over again.
Best class I have ever had. Changed the way I viewed a lot of things.
Great teacher. Class is sometimes hard to follow, but interesting none the less.
Dr. Sergienko is overly opinionated eventhough he pretends he is non biased. However he is a very helpful teacher and is personable. Most people thought he was a nice guy but we all left the class with headaches. Not a highly recommended class and rather frustrating.
He is down to earth and makes dead philosophers interesting and important.
Andrew's a great prof. He tends to get side-tracked easily, and go off on tangents, but it's always interesting. And he has a morbid sense of humor. I love the group disscussions in class; you get a lot of different viewpoints. I think I'm more ethical now than ever before (heehee).
Smart guy with good information!
Sergeinko is a teacher that rambles on about the most boring stuff, he never stays on topic, never lets anyone else voice their opinions and if they do they are immediately criticized for their ideas. Honestly, he could put even some of the greatest philosophers asleep.
Dr. Sergienko is a pretty good teacher. What he talks about is very interesting. He teaches with scenarios & stories. He really made philosophy fun! The only thing that I did not like was his grading system. Each point is worth a percentage-so if you got a bad grade on an assignment, you could easi
Sergienko is one of my all time favorite teachers. I love how he quotes the simpsons all the time. I don't see how anybody could not like this teacher, he is the most entertaining teacher I have ever had! I encourage everyone to take a class from him!!!

he is hot and nice, he talks alot about the simpsons so watch some episodes if you want to understand what he is talking about when he compars it to something. Papers. He is very interesting and ancient people almost seem alive . You gotta take this class!!!!
Sergienko's great. He may get a little off topic at times, but it's always relevant to the discussion. Always willing to answer questions + look at papers + discuss things outside of class. Would reccomend him to anyone.
he is hands down the best teacher at the sh*** little junior college, the most intelligent for sure. it is a wonder he isn't teaching at UW. he is fair and gives you the grade you deserve. he also has a hot wife
hottie hottie boom ba lottie!! Great scenarios he uses to relate to every situation, I loved finding flaws in every philosopher's findings. Really makes you think. TAKES ATTENDANCE!!! (If I went to class every day I would have had an A-, not a B+)
Andrew is a great teacher! Take him, he's really funny and interesting.
Wickedly funny. Very clear. Take him.
everyone should take him! he's hilarious!
He was a great professor! Being a running start student I was very impressed with how helpful he was and how simply he taught. take him! - grades easy if you write what he tells you to write
he explains descartes using the simpsons, and it's freaking awesome.
This guy knows how to teach. I don't even know if I could tolerate a different professor to teach me philosophy in the future. He is pretty open-minded to opinons, and also made the entire class think about what they truly might believe is right or wrong. He's really funny, too. So I think it would be a BIG mistake to not take one of his classes.
Andrew is one of the best teachers I have ever taken. I had him for Phil 102 (Ethics) as well as Phil 120 (Formal Logic). He constant sense of humor is enough for you to want to come to class every day. He is tough but fair, and always willing to help if you need it. Make sure you take a class of his during your time at SPS! You'll be happy you di
Worst professor I have had so far. Very condescending.
He is nice and quite funny. I enjoyed coming to class. I didn't like the group/seminar discusion things very much but I'm just not a fan of those in general. Overall I would recomend him and the class.
Sergienko is a pretty chill teacher. He's funny. His class isn't heard. Show up, participate in discussion, write a few papers, read, and you'll get an A. He's always willing to help make any of your papers better and is very open-minded.
awesome teacher. hence all the ratings. we always did something interesting. i highly reccommend the class.
A great class. For an intro class it was hard to tell what he wanted in a paper.
Funny and entertaining.
Not bad at explaining and helping understand basic concepts but sometimes does not allow for a lot of unstructered or uninterupted discussion. If you want structure, he's great but if you want something that allows you to have a lot of thoughts on the topic then don't take him!
This is the best class I have ever taken! It was not an easy class, but he made it as entertaining as symbolic logic can possibly be. Though he doesn't take attendance, if you're not in class you will likely miss something important.
Sergienko is the best teacher i have ever had. he is really into what he teaches which is sometimes hard to find. he is also engaging and entertaining. i really liked his ethics class as well
I could not be more pleased with Andrew's teaching. It's entertaining and informative. He's a silly guy with a silly sense of humor, and that's not for everyone, but I enjoyed it greatly. He occasionally gets off topic, but it's always related in some way. I'm a fan, and I'm taking him again for Intro to Formal Logic. (PHIL 106.)
Do not question his authority or you will pay. I had an online philosophy class with him. I turned in two papers which he raved about. Comments like, "You obviously understand the material" and "Great writing style." Then I made a comment about not liking the questions on the tests because they were pointless (continued on next post)
(continued) even though I got an A. He ripped me about not respecting him as a teacher and demanded I remove the post. My next paper was decimated. There was more red than black. He obviously took the comment personally and let his emotions get in the way of grading appropriately. I thought college was training us to critically analyze. Not he
If your not some sleezbag that obviously has no interest in this class, he will be the best professor you have ever had. I would rate him an A+. Hands down, he is great.
Andrew Sergienko is a peculiar person. The material he presents is interesting and is relate-able to current times. There are a couple pop quizzes so do all the reading and understand the content. Procrastinators barely get by, try to voice your opinion a couple times in class discussions. Also, He keeps attendance.
Serg is a cool guy.Someone you would want to hang out with out of school.Philosophy is a very abstract class. If you dont like to read old style books i.e. Plato and Socrates then dont take this class. He gives points for participation so talk a little. The quizes are short, 5 questions or so.You wont do well on the papers if you dont read the books.
He is a cool guy, but don't be fooled: he is whip smart and will demand a lot from you. Do the work, never skip readings, and take notes as you go. He is extremely helpful if you have questions. Don't skimp on discussions!
One of the best at SPSCC. His classes are not always a walk in the part (I also took it Into to Logic course, it was quite challenging) but he is approachable and helpful if you seek him out. There are almost daily readings, but 90% of class time is spent on discussions. He will appreciate you more if you participate in discussions.
I think this class is hard for someone who doesnt read old liturature type stuff like socrates and euthyphro. I cant understand a word of it. He will call you out in class at random..bad idea for those who have a phobia of public speaking. Puts you on the spot making you sweat hardcore and very scared of looking dumb.IM NERVOUS of GOING TO CLASS.
Neat class
Awesome teacher all around! Wish I could take more classes from him.
He was a great all around teacher but a lot of his material was very difficult to understand. But he definitely made the class fun to attend everyday!
Clear class, good teacher.
Great professor. Fun class, not too hard, not too easy.
HANDS DOWN THE BEST TEACHER AT THIS SCHOOL. Philosophy 101 is probably the only class I've taken in college that actually required me to use my brain! Which means it wasn't easy but it was rewarding. The fact that he's hilarious is a much needed and appreciated bonus. He'll keep you awake even when the material is dull.
This was by far the hardest class I have ever taken. He was helpful when I asked but after awhile he made it seem like I was burdening him by asking. I ended up dropping the class and I have told everyone to NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
A very opinionated teacher. Was always afraid to speak cause he always criticizes and shoots your thoughts down. Not very clear on assignments nor easily graded. Assumes that you always understand him. Expects students to be at his level of knowledge.
Teacher was extremely opinionated and didn't clearly explain his grading system which leaves me to believe he forms a bias on the student. Considering he likes to condemn students for holding different opinions- even telling them to drop the class- I would say he is by far the worst teacher I have ever had.
Online: You read A LOT (which is okay with me because I enjoy this material) and it is mostly online discussions. There are papers every few weeks but I think he is clear or at least I thought he was at first. Halfway through the class he decided I wrote a paper without reading any of the material and took off half points for it. I have a 3.7GPA
Does not care to hear individual interpretations of philosophy. Thinks that there is only one right answer to how the reading should be interpreted. If this was the case, there would be not room for his opinion as the view of the material would have been the same since they were written.
Your grade in this class (symbolic logic) will completely (95%!) depend on tests and quizzes. For each test the professor will give you practice tests that look completely identical in form to the test itself. Very funny and bright guy, will help you with your questions and academic anxiety during office hours. Also looks similar to Kevin Bacon.
He is very opinionated and thinks that his interpretation of the readings in class is the only right one. He does not clearly explain to you how to write a great essay, the grading is very subjective to him. Just agree with everything he has to say in your papers and you will get an A.
I liked his Intro to Philosophy class. He's funny and it seems like he knows his stuff. I started out pretty clueless about philosophy, but now I feel a little more confident about it. No textbook, just a lot of online reading material. It's all good stuff, though. Fun to read and it gets you thinking about life. I would take another class of his!
Prof. Sergienko is a pretty demanding professor. Tough grader.I must say reading the reviews before the class over exaggerated slightly. I must say that he is very into philosophy and for sure knows his stuff. He gives great lecture notes that guides you through the readings. He is a decent professor. Quizzes determine grade so retain info.
When I took this class there were only 10 students so Andrew structured the class differently. He really is a fun teacher to talk with and because there were so few students we really got to speak our own opinions and everyone was respected. He of course had his own opinions, but he did not put down any other students opinion. It was a great class!
Relatively chill class, it was fun to get stoned and then just sit back and listen to the conversation.
Take this class if you want to have a professor who either loves you or hates you, and isn't afraid to show it. In front of the whole entire class.
Good class but not a lot of assignments so your grade can go south quickly.
best prof at spscc
You have to read the material and be able to analyze it, write 2 papers and take two exams. Exam are open notes. Class discussions every day, little lecture, he makes philosophy interesting.
Andrew and his wife both are great teachers. I loved his raw teaching style. Even though being online, he was very present which is hard to come by with an online class sadly. He really got everyone thinking critically and wasn't super strict which I think helps student want to complete homework and succeed.
I feel like I would have enjoyed Andrew much better in an on campus setting. Quizzes and participation points are fairly easy, but discussions about philosophy online just don't engage me the same. I want to clarify, many of my issues are probably more about the class being online than the professor. He gave decent feedback at first, then stopped.
Solid class. Good communicator and always well prepared. Great discussion prompts and plenty of time for peer-peer discussion -- definitely would recommend taking on campus and not online.
Super easy class. You write two or three papers, one to two pages each, on a reading. You will pass the class if you do the reading. Expect 20 minutes per day, average. Surprisingly interesting, and gets you thinking. The readings are typically pretty interesting.
Wouldn't recommend unless you really want to work for a good grade. Gets mad really easily. Kept the class entertained most the time.
I regret taking that class. At first, he came off as very chill but that was not how he ended towards the end of the quarter. I'm typically a very good student for all classes but NOBODY (but like 3) did "decent". SO. MANY. POP. QUIZZES. He's also so harsh when it comes to grading papers. I would not take again and advise to take a different one.
I enjoyed this class. Personally, it was a great start for my 1st class back in college. I found myself continuously interested in the course material and Sergienko did a great job explaining the material in a way that was relatable, understandable, and engaging. I suggest doing the reading but it wasn't required as we went over it in class.
Andrew is a very fun & relatable guy. But don't take this class if you don't understand Philosophy. I took it to get a better understanding, but he didn't help my knowledge grow in any way. He graded my papers very harshly and didn't even offer to help. There's a lot of reading outside & if you don't understand then you're screwed.
This was my first class ever at SPSCC and Andrew Sergienko was the perfect introduction. Although there are a lot of readings, he does a good job of breaking them down and making them understandable. He is honestly such a funny guy and I would highly recommend this class to anyone.
Andrew is good dude. I just had him for Philo101 and really got a lot out of his daily lectures. Philosophy is not always easy to understand but his ability to break everything down really helped me comprehend the stuff that flew over my head. Do the reading, come to class, and don't write lame essays and you will do just fine.
I did pretty good in his class because I showed up. he was super good at teaching us the materials and helped a lot with memorization. he also says a lot of puns and dad jokes but it's light and funny. laid back but a bit of reading and some homework. if you do the work and show up you'll do great
There is three major essays that are really fun to write. The topics are very interesting apposed to an english class. His quizes are open everything and he drops the lowest score. He's very genuine and funny all the time and is really easy to like. I'd take him over again every quarter. He doesn't push his political views or beliefs.
Daily reading, discussion on that reading the next day. 4 essays make up the vast majority of your grade. Quizzes thrown in if he suspects people aren't reading. Minimal interest is all that's needed to enjoy the class. Genuine guy and great professor. Only annoying part of the entire class is if you sit next to people who refuse to read.
He is overall an amazing professor. The class was a lecture class but he made it fun. He is very clear on what is expected. There is nightly reading and then you go over it in class the next day. We only had two papers and two tests, which he is very fair on. Not my usual choice for a class but I enjoyed it!
Overall a solid professor he likes to make some jokes in some of his lecture notes which helps break up some of the tougher reading. he also gives good summaries on some of the reading and will offer his own thoughts on your work.
Loved taking this class. Was my first philosophy class and he did a great job at getting me started in understanding the works of popular philosophers/concepts. Most of the grade comes from 3 essays given throughout the quarter. Topics are given with plenty of time to work on them and, most importantly, he lets you send in rough drafts for feedback
Really difficult class, kind of hard to follow along with discussions. If you love philosophy take this class, if you don't then definitely do not. It's very hard.
He is SO FUNNY. You won't want to skip this class, he makes it so enjoyable. There is no fluff work which can be good or bad. Homework is reading, but the only points are papers, exams, and attendance. He is a hard grader, but gives clear expectations which he follows when grading. Study for the tests and it will be an easy A.
Everyone recommended him, but honestly I wish I had never taken him for Philosophy. There is group and individual quizzes so you have to read the material and be able to understand it before class. By far one of the hardest classes I have taken.
Symbolic Logic is by far one of the hardest courses to take if you are new to proofs. There is a lot of stuff to learn from the textbook, but the professor is incredibly helpful with homework. It is a good class, just quite tough.
By far the best professor I have had so far. He was extremely funny, and wanted to get to know his students and make connections with them. As long as you pay attention in class you will do good. youre only graded on attendance, essays, and tests which are in class long answer prompts. I would definitely take one of his classes again.
Dr. Sergienko is a good teacher and grades fairly.
I've taken three classes with him now. Two for philosophy and ethics, and one for symbolic logic. Andrew is great at giving feedback and trying to answer questions with the least amount of bias as possible, he shares what he knows and is good at keeping the atmosphere civil and interesting. The readings that he gives are online and can be lengthy.
Excellent class and enjoyed the class discussion posts. Lots of reading but very educational just plan one day of the week to do the reading and you'll be fine. One quiz each week that weren't too difficult and a discussion board with classmates. Lots of deep thinking but mind stretching and thought provoking. Andrew was always available.
This class was much harder than expected. It ruined my perfect 4.0 gpa because of the difficult reading and hard grading. I asked the professor for help understanding and he basically said just do better next time. His feedback to papers are very picky and "my way or the highway" oriented. You must know how to read philosophy on your own, to pass .
I had him last quarter as a professor and he was the best professor I’ve had in my whole college experience. He was so funny and chill that I was actually looking forward to going to class. 100/10
An ideal, high-quality instructor with personality. His essay feedback and writing tips will rival your previous English professors. Not quite a cakewalk; I recommend watching CrashCourse videos on the ethical theories covered in class before participating in the quizzes or discussions.
The assignments were clear and laid out, but I was not a fan of his grading style. The feedback I received was often unhelpful, and his system for docking points was unclear. He is a very tough grader.
Professor Sergienko's Philosophy 120 (Symbolic Logic) course will forever be the most memorable and engaging class I've taken at SPSCC. That says a lot, considering the material can be very dense and abstract.
A difficult class. Despite passing, I never felt like I fully grasped the concepts. His feedback seems like it's from his personal perspective only and is overall vague. I was unable to improve. However, readings are provided. The material is very interesting as well. His grading is somewhat lenient.
His grading systems is terrible he puts assignments out of 3 points and loves to take off .5 points which adds up very quick. He is not helpful at all and comments on essays are back handed and rude. If you like your gpa avoid him at all costs.
I loved having Professor Sergienko! Our class was extremely small, instead of half-assing his lectures he spent the extra time in lecture with one on one with the students and taking our advice to help us get the highest grade. He changed his lecture plan multiple times in favor of the students. TLDR; If you need a Phil credit take his class!
This is a challenging class but the prof. does a good job teaching it. He has a good sense of humor. There's a very tolerable amount of hw along with some quizzes/tests. He prepares you really well for those and there's no curveballs. As long as you read everything and practice a lot, you'll do fine.
are you a man? no? you will fail this class. good luck
Extremely Sexist. Believes that violence is justified in our society.
Unfair
Not respectful.
terrible. do not take his class
Rude. definitely appeals to male ideology.
opinionated. doesnt teach womens philosophy. uses clasess as experiments.
Get ready to learn all about this professors philosophy. This. teacher is what is wrong with community colleges.
Just awful. didnt respond to any of the women in the class.
Unkind
Very opinoniated as i beleive someone elwe also mentioned on here. felt like his second job.
Typical philosophy teacher. if you don't conform to his philosophy than you are wrong.
I felt very unheard in this class. I also noticed that he promoted violence in our community in many of our classroom discussions.
Talk about ignoring students. Whenever I wrote him a message, he would never just respond to me!!!. Expect to learn nothing.
This class requires a substantial amount of effort to pass, so be prepared to work for your grade! Some of the readings are difficult to understand, but the Professor makes it somewhat easier through his lecture notes. Feedback often felt derogatory. P.S. I'm a girl and still managed to get an 'A' in this course (if that means anything).
He preaches, not teaches. His teaching of philosophy is so messy and hard for the majority of the class to follow along. I had more than one peer reach out asking if I could help them and I honestly, couldn't. He only teaches the philosophies that are his own. He does not teach any female or color philosophers.
white male philosophy, talk about not general education. biased. Unfair. clearly opinionated. fails to learn anything from his students.
he is not here to teach but rather to preach look elsewhere for an education.
Good luck in this class. Hopefully, you share his exact same philosophies or you probably won't pass. Soft determinism is a thing, Andrew. I hope one day you can learn from your students. Just like a philosophy teacher to think he knows everything. This man definitely needs to learn to be open-minded. Ironic, he teaches philosophy.
not good
do not take his classes
learning wont happen here
By far the worst class I've taken at SPSCC. I didn't feel heard, he never responded to any of my posts.. I saw someone mentioned that this class was more difficult as a girl and I do have to agree that I felt he was harder on my philosophies because of that.
Felt like he had better things to do other than teach.
I walked away feeling like I paid a lot for nothing.
I don't recommend this class or professor. It's 2023, and he is still just teaching white male philosophy... Please get with the times... This is supposed to be a well-rounded education, not just what YOU want to teach. BIASED.
Don't express any opinion other than one that he will agree with.
Papers graded with lots of opinions with very little evidence that you are 'Wrong' when you try and have a discussion with him you are just ignored. I don't understand what the point in being a teacher is if you fail to teach your students.
Closed-minded.
Dont recommend. I was excited to take this class, I felt very unheard.
Unclear why I did so poorly. I always met length requirements and punctuation and followed his rubric. Failed to give evidence as to why my papers were graded so harshly. I'm taking much more advanced classes and this is the first that I felt so lost as to why I was doing so poorly.
Just take any other philosophy class by any other professor.
Very little feedback.
I worked hard in this class but he is a tough grader very harsh on outside philosophies.
Very opinionated course. I feel as if spscc shouldn't keep him around much longer. His views are outdated.
Gave little reason why he would flunk your papers.
Not a great experience.
I'm conflicted about giving him feedback. What feedback did I get this semester? Graded based on his opinions, little evidence for why your grade is what he chooses. He wont respond to your questions.
Love the subject dislike the class. Difficult to navigate, the teacher wasn't very present.
I enjoyed Andrew. He made me think. That was his goal and he succeded. Easily one of my favorite teachers of all time.
This professor would sell his house before giving anyone an "a". Gave me the same grade on a paper with 3 corrections as he did with my paper with 11 corrections. He marks you down for legal Grammar based on his opinion. Don't put too much effort into his class, it'll hurt less when he gives you your inevitable "b".
Professor was animated and made philosophy interesting by acting out scenarios in the reading to give us a good understanding. However, the grading was a bit tough, but, his feedback was invaluable. Also, the lectures would include examples of current politics and social issues which I wasn't comfortable with hearing even if I agreed.
The professor has a rigid grading system and is not open to alternative perspectives. However, unstuck study proved helpful for exam prep when the course material felt unclear.
I once got a teacher fired by accident just by talking about their behavior to another teacher. And yet, this man is truly the worst teacher I have ever had. Reading was dense and inaccessible. Viewpoints were offensively outdated. Some of the feedback I got was sexist enough that I considered talking to higher ups at the school. Do not take him.
Professor Andrew is good at what he does. He's super funny and sarcastic so if you don't get his human that's on you. There's a lot of reading and if you haven't read philosophy before it can be difficult but as long as you attend class he does a good job of summarizing the reading. Just be prepared to read a lot.
I enjoyed Professor Sergienko's philosophy class, but it took me a while to get there. At first I felt like he didn't give great feedback, and it was anything but constructive. Overtime, I asked questions and requested revisions on my drafts which is when I saw the progress. Lots of reading assignments; quiz and discussion once a week, 3 papers.
Andrew is a philosopher and teacher. He gives feedback that is more complex than you might expect—in a good way—pushing you to think more deeply. It's also a good idea to talk with him about the topic frequently during his office hours.
