This guy is great! He tells fun stories to spice up the lectures. What other class do you get to listen to "Magic Stick" by 50 Cent in?
I go to his lectures because they're always good!
his exams were alittle specific for a 101 class...but his stories were good.
He's great, I want to take more classes with ihm. He makes people love Anthro, and his 500 person lectures are never boring, it is as if he is talking directly to each student. Still his class was easy enough to only go 2 out of 3 times a week.
lectures became unbearably boring after the drop/add deadline. class is boring and so is the annoying reading
This is by far the worse class ever...I would not recommend it for anyone who didn't have to take it. It's boring and Prof. Shyrock thinks he is SOOO funny when he really is not. Plus, the exam are a lot harder then they ought to be.
This is NOT "by far the worst class ever." It doesn't even come close! The exams are perfectly reasonable, given that the student actually prepares. He makes the lectures interesting, relating everything to the class and his own experiences. He's an awesome lecturer. Thumbs up.
Prof Shryock is awesome! He makes you laugh at least once in every lecture. Tests are kind of difficult but are decsent if you prepare. This is one of the best intro classes UM has to offer.
he was a good teacher and always made the class interesting. His stories are great and he understands the mindset of a college student.
Lectures were good, he told funny stories. Pretty easy class too.
Shryock is a great teacher! He's an engaging lecturer and brings the subject to life with his funny anecdotes and professional experiences in the field. It is my most favorite lecture.
Fun to listen to and introduces new ideas. Discussions were useless but the exams were pretty difficult...subjective course assessed on a 50 multiple choice question objective exam. Is worth taking if you are interested.
Made a subject that i found extremely boring to be somewhat intersting.

holly peters golden is much, much easier, but getting an A with shryock still isn't very hard. he's also pretty funny. go to lecture, but bring other homework to do--he takes his stupid exam questions off random-ass**** that happens in lecture
boring
A BIT CONFUSED AS A THINKER.
Shryock is an amazing teacher. I was dreading the class before I took it, and now I am so glad that I did because he is an amazing lecturer. True to what everyone else has said, his tests are little more difficult, but if you study you should do fine in the class. A great freshman class to take!
Shryock was amazing. His lectures were both informative and interesting, which is hard to come by. I highly recommend him.
Shryock was a great lecturer and his class was interesing. The exams (which were pretty hard) were based off things straight from lecture so if you listen, take good notes, and study a bit you'll be fine. Just pray that you also get a good GSI because that will definitely earn you an A.
this man is an awesome lecturer and it got me really interested in anthro. as long as you go to lecture and do the readings you will be good. funny guy and oh so interesting
An amazing class to take if you're interested in Anthropology and the Middle East. He is an awesome lecturer, always making class interesting. Class reqs are only 2 papers, but he grades fairly hard. If you show up to class, and ask him questions on the essays you should be fine.

hilarious man. great stories. awesome haircut. what more could you ask for?
Very funny lectures. Played rap music the other day to show us balanced reciprocity. Loves to ask the class questions (answers shown by raising hands) to see if what he's talking about is true. You want Dr. Shryock as your prof, I promise!
Freakin Hillarious! He is an amazing professor who takes the time to ask questions and makes learning fun! He has played rap music in class, shown movies such as -Barbie Nation- and Planet of the Apes- and others. He adds first hand experience to each lecture and the required readings are both amazing and diverse. Great class, Great Professor!
GREAT PROFESSOR!! i wasn't really interested in this class to begin with, just took it for the RE requirement, but in the end it turned out to be my favourite class.. he knows his stuff and presents it in amazingly creative ways (rap music, Barbie Nation, alien drawings) which makes the (boring) material interesting
Great class, uses personal examples to make boring material interesting
Made curriculum fun
I highly recommend this course with Prof. Shryock... He is an amazing lecturer and makes this course fun and interesting.
Amzing, enthusiastic, and fun to listen to.Actually made me enjoy lecture.
Enthusiastic, fun to listen to. His enthusiasm seems to come off a little cocky, though.. Personal stories are great, but sometimes take up too much time. Don't be fooled by the multiple choice, condencing half a semester in 50 questions is an awful idea. Not enough assignments to reflect true knowledge in the course--can screw you over.
Interesting professor. Good stories and entertaining lecturer especially about his 6'5'' wife Sally. You can cram in a few hours of studying before the midterm and final to get a relatively easy A.
The exams were worded very confusing
The class was interesting but the exams were too hard for an intro class. This is definatly not an easy A class! The reading was interesting and his stories about living in Jordan and his wife made lecture not drag on as long.
Exams were hard, but lectures were extremely interesting because he used personal stories. The final assignment (8-10 page paper) was stupid, and I don't feel it could accurately reflect how much I had learned in the class especially since the class barely had ANY assignments other than this one.
Andrew was GREAT! Class was very interesting and he is probably the BEST professor i have ever had. Stories were fun, he cracks pretty funny jokes, and makes class fun and exciting to go to. Probably hands down the best prof at the University
best teacher at michigan
He's a funny and entertaining lecturer, but sometimes but it's hard to take notes cause he uses so many examples. Also, don't be fooled by the fact that his tests are multiple choice; they aren't easy
He makes lectures very fun and interesting, the problem is I only remembered his jokes or stories. Very hard to take notes as you don't know what to write down, and you had better read the book because his tests aren't as easy as you would think based on his teaching style.
The class itself is very interesting, and Andrew does a great job of presenting the material. His stories, anecdotes, and jokes definitely made the class enjoyable. However, I found the class more difficult than I thought it would be. It's necessary to both read the book and attend lecture regularly, but it was worth it, I think.
HE IS AWESOME!!!!! BEST TEACHERS EVER!
Lectures are entertaining. I enjoyed the stories and jokes. Occasionally I felt a little bit like he was going too far with his sarcasm.
Great professor...makes every lecture much more than bearable! Interesting anecdotes that help the information stick. Exams are not too difficult if you read the text and go to lecture.
Great prof., easiest class.
Awesome teacher. One of the most interesting classes I've taken in college. Will expand your view on the world, and will make you a better person.
take this class, period. very interesting material, very easy, two meaningful exams, several bullsh!t assignments/tests, and one long, but easy, paper. FUN
Prof Shyrock was a great teacher. I would highly recommend his class, and attending his lecture. I rarely attended and still managed to get an A, but it would be worthwhile for most.
Great guy and his lectures are always interesting, but not very helpful as far as passing the class. Spends most of his time on anecdotes and examples. He's entertaining and I enjoyed lectures, but don't expect them to help too much.
This is a very interesting class, and Professor Shryock is a great guy with a lot of enthusiasm for his field. While you CAN get through the class without attending the lecture, it'd be a terrible waste: Andrew makes everything more fun and easier to understand.
Shryock is an awesome professor. He will make you want to take more anthro classes. His stories are hilarious and as long as you show up to lecture you will do well on the tests. He gives you his notes and really makes it clear what he wants you to know. Definitely take this class for Race and Ethnicity.
He's hilarious, but he gets sidetracked very easily because of all his stories. Sometimes I wonder if I really learned much in his class.
funny funny guy but I just wasn't interested in the material. His lectures are pretty funny but you don't really learn the topics that will be on the test unless you read the book
Great Professor, entertaining and very knowledgeable. Only 2 tests and 1 paper. His lectures are actually enjoyable to go to. TAke THIS CLASS, you wont regret it.
shryock is a great professor i HIGHLY recommend taking this class. you dont have to go to lecture- you can teach yourself pretty much everything with just the textbook and his lecture notes- but the lectures aren't boring hes so funny so you want to go
Excellent professor! Very entertaining and knowledgeable. Tells great stories that are actually relevant to the material! Highly recommend this class!!! (and it fulfills your race and ethnicity requirement!)
Shryock does his best to keep lectures entertaining. The students regularly crack up during lectures due to his stories/jokes. The second half of Anthro 101 (mainly Cultural) is definitely more interesting than the first half which does an overview of all branches of Anthropology.
I love this man! Literally! You will want to go to lecture every day! He is one prof. I will never forget! He spent a whole day talking about how he got stoned with the natives while doing research-HILLARIOUS MAN-AMAZING CLASS!
Prof Shryock is funny. He shows a lot of movies in class which def makes anthropology more interesting than it sounds. He presents lots of his original ideas rather than just reiterating the textbook materials.
Really interesting class, worth taking. I got an A in the class, I went to all of the lectures and had a good experience. TAKE THIS CLASS.
LOVED THIS CLASS. Prof Shryock is hilarious and amazing... didnt have any interest in anthro before but Andrew made it so much fun that it pained me if I had to miss lecture. only two tests and one midterm paper... although the paper kinda sucked. got an A in the class and didnt try very hard. never went to office hrs but imagine he would be helpfu
Prof. Shyrock is a really great lecturer. He is passionate about what he teaches. The class is really broad since it is an intro course. He loves to tell jokes but it can get boring though. Attending lecture isn't mandatory but read his notes and the books. Take your own notes too. I got a B in the course.
Hilarious, extremely easy class, AND I really felt like I learned something. Take this class if you can -- its wonderful.
Best professor this semester, maybe even my entire time at UM. Knowledgeable and nice.
Really good prof to have as a freshman. He's knowledgeable, and always has funny stories to tell about his adventures as an anthropologist.
Loved this class.
Yes. Take this class. Andrew is hilarious, and a very good lecturer. He doesn't try to trick you on the exams, and in fact will tell you ahead of time exactly what will be on the exam. Honestly, anyone will enjoy this class.
Professor Shryock is one of the best professors you can have as a freshman. I had to miss a lecture once, and was disappointed because they were so interesting. He relates material in the book to his own funny anthropology adventures, and the tests are very fair.
Loved attending lecture, he's hilarious and knew how to keep the attention of the students in his class. Would not mind taking another class with him again.
Loved going to lecture. They were so interesting. Got an A and didn't open the book once.
I LOVE HIM! This class is a joke. It's so easy and all you have to do it listen to his lectures and memorize his lecture notes. If you do that, you will get an A. You don't even need the book. There's one paper and it's long but easy to write. He's a classy, cultured dude and go to office hours because he's really easy to talk to! :)
Great course! Going to class is fun and lectures are always interesting. Section was a disaster but it's only once a week, so not much time lost there. And it covers the R&E requirement. Definitely worth your time. Great for freshman
Great class!! I really loved it. Professor Shryock is hilarious. If you want to take an awesome SS course, take this class. It was fun to attend and during every lecture he managed to make me laugh.
Great professor, very entertaining/funny!
GREAT PROFESSOR!!!! He made lecture fun, and I'd be sad if I had to miss one. He is helpful when you email him or go to his office hours. My GSI was also really helpful and understanding. Awesome class :) Tests were kind of tough, but if you show up to lecture and review sections, it really helps.
He is an amazing professor. He is extremely helpful and his lectures are very interesting. His exams are easy if you read the book and come to class. He will make you want to get out of bed in the morning and come to class. Take his class even if you dont have to.
Amazing class. His lectures were interesting and you didn't have to study too much to get good grades.
Without a doubt the worst class I've taken at the university. If you're trying to get the R&E requirement out of the way, pick something that interests you even if it's challenging. This guy is more amused with himself than you will ever be (although this is some of the most bone dry material on earth). Reading is also required, and it is BORING
Professor Shryock is so awesome! He was just so funny and made the material so interesting. I always enjoyed going to class, & was really glad to be introduced to anthropology by him. The work load is not too bad, but it is not an easy A either. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience & would recommend this class to anyone as an R&E requirement.
Overall, I enjoyed his class. His lectures were engaging though they were often off tangent at times. He uses many personal anecdotes in class, but they are amusing. The actual textbook is unnecessary but the reading is important. Not an easy A, but an A is definitely possible.
Excellent professor, very knowledgeable, clear and lively. He really cares about his students. I wish he taught another class.
I don't recommend this class as r&e fulfillment. As an international student I found all the materials difficult to understand, also you really couldn't get INTO the classes since they're something too far away from my own culture. Plus I got an GSI with a terrible accent and handwriting. Lecs are full of funny antidotes, but not tangent.
Lectures are never boring, always engaging, and usually hilarious. In addition to being a good teacher with interesting field work experience, this man is a gifted storyteller and his lectures often resemble storytelling or standup comedy. Plus the class is a breeze if you go to the lectures, which you WILL want to do.
Do not take this class if you are looking for a blowoff or relatively interesting R&E. Shryock will go on tangents every lecture about things that do not relate at all to the class. He is also rude and arrogant. A good amount of kids received Bs which is ridiculous for an intro anthro course. It is not interesting at all.
He's probably the most interesting, cool professor at this school. I went in to this class thinking it was just an easy A, but it was actually extremely interesting. Tests are really easy MC common sense, and as long as you get a 90 on them, A in discussion and the paper, you'll get an A in the class. Studying is just reading the book and his notes
Overall, the class was very enjoyable and I enjoyed going to lectures because his stories were always interesting. Even though he may go off tangent many times, he reviews everything you need to know for the exam the lecture before the exam. There is much reading to do as expected with any anthro course. Overall, it is very doable to get an A.
Shryock is a great teacher and also a great guy. If you want to learn more about his specialty I recommend his office hours--he has great insight to offer. He also tells really funny & interesting stories in class!
Andrew is so FUNNY and so INTERESTING. His lectures are completely essential to the course in my opinion. Anyone who says he goes off on irrelevant rants does not see the connection he makes between his anecdotes and the terms we are learning in class because they always relate. Tests aren't hard, reading isn't hard, its all chill.
The most entertaining lectures I have this term. Includes funny anecdotes and interesting stories from his time in Jordan. Has unique spins and takes on common "boring" topics like marriage, dating, gender, diversity. Interesting ethnographies, less interesting but still relevant textbook. Very fun class, got me interested in anthro.
He's a nice enough guy, but he makes the exams unnecessarily difficult - much higher than a 100-level course should allow. He also seems to think he's a pastor (his vocal intonations, especially) because his lectures all sound like sermons, which gets irritating to listen to 3 times a week; the lectures drag on to feel much longer than an hour.
He was a really interesting professor. He had really good stories and makes lecture fun. The class is pretty easy, a midterm and final and one paper. Just make sure you get a good GSI
If you are thinking about taking this class as a "blow-off" class, it isn't. I wouldn't recommend taking this class unless you are genuinely interested in Anthropology beyond a superficial level. I found none of the material interesting.
Don't take this class if you are looking to get an easy A. Although the lectures were sometimes entertaining, he goes off topic a ton. The tests are only 50 mc and have a good amount of tricky questions that will trip you up and if you get 6 wrong ur at a B. I honestly felt like the GSIs wanted us to do bad in the class. Regret taking this class.
Took this to fulfill my humanities requirement and thought it'd be an easy A but it wasn't at all. The exams were extremely difficult and there was way too much material covered for a 101 course. Make sure you like anthro if you want to take this course & do all of the readings. It's not a class you can blow off and do well in.
The class itself was whatever; what truly stood out were Andrew's riveting anecdotes from his anthropological adventures and his beautiful hair. Take this class if you're a fan of anthropology or luscious locks!
Lectured are really funny if you ever go haha. Everything is straight out of the textbook so all you need to do is just read the textbook and the two books he assigns you to read throughout the semester. Actually read those two extra books because it will help you a ton.
