Pretty awesome. My first philosophy class and he was pretty darn decent. He can be a little boring sometimes but if you get his sense of humor he's hilarious. He has you buy like five books but he goes over everything you need to know for his tests. I recommend going everyday. Definitely the best teacher I have this semester.
He is a nice guy and also pretty funny, BUT this class is way hard for a 100 level class. I have a C- and I have done all of the homework and studied for tests!
Professor Spear is amazing! Logic is actually quite interesting and easy. It is very helpful for the GMAT and LSAT exams. Andrew Spear is extremely helpful and even comical in his lectures. You would have to work a decent amount, but can be an easy A if you do the homework assignments. I recommend the night class, I look forward to it every week!
Professor Spear is great. He actually makes Philosophy interesting and not so abstract. He writes down and gives you handouts of everything you will ever need to know for tests and quizzes. I highly recommend him!
He was very nice and he cared about his students he made it interesting and easy to study for exams
Pretty good guy. Can't draw a llama to save his life but that is not usually necessary for philosophy. Hard grader for essays and take home tests. Beware!
Excellent and dedicated instructor.
Spear is the man! Willing to spend as much time with you to answer any questions you might have. Logic is a big puzzle so if you don't like puzzles it will be a difficult class but if you do then it will be a breeze, just follow the rules. Spear even shows us clips of The Daily Show, can't go wrong with that!
Dr. Spear is where it's at. He has the swagger of a sub-Saharan Lion and the finesse of a mongoose. I couldn't have been happier with my instructor for this course. He is very helpful in office hours and just a great guy to be around. He's pretty funny and the lectures are enjoyable. I'm even thinking about picking up a PHI minor because of him
You can't go wrong with Professor Spear. Not because his class is easy, but because he is very easy to listen to, and in addition can teach extremely well a subject that is hard to teach to inexperienced. Very smart as is his humor which I also enjoyed. HIGHLY recommend.
Hard grader, but I learned a lot and he's an awesome teacher!
Spear is very reasonable and fair. He takes his teaching seriously; but in front of the class, even on the rainy days he'll keep things lively and entertaining. He is a rather gracious grader(and I've had him for upper level PHI courses) and will help if have a problem. Not only should you take his class you'll be missing out if you don't.
I LOVE THIS MAN! He's so helpful and so nice. The lectures aren't very exciting but you gotta love him!
Very good professor. This course is based on writing papers so if you're good at that then it's easy as pie. However, he can be sneaky and assign homework at weird times so keep an eye on blackboard and your GV email. There are a lot of reading assignments but they're generally of reasonable length. He's a nice guy so I'd take him a gain for sure!
Professor Spear was great. I had absolutely no interest in Logic, yet he made it kinda fun. He is extremely helpful and was pretty funny, take him if you can!
Take his Phi 101 class!!!
Class is mainly graded based off of papers. He grades them pretty fairly. Has random quizzes that go towards a participation grade. I found class to be incredibly boring. He knows all his students so you cannot skip class. I learned to hate philosophy from this class.
I LOVE him. One of the best professors I've ever had. Makes sure you understand everything and actually cares to make sure you are learning. Take him for sure :)
I figured this would be a good class to take for spare credits. His notes are jotted all over the place and not in a set sequence which creates constant confusion. I was told my papers were too "complex and elaborate for the average reader" so I got heavily marked down. Never have I been so let down by a college-level course.
This was my first Philosophy class I had ever taken. Prof Spear knows what he is talking about and is willing to explain in different ways and give numerous examples to help you understand. It's important to go to class to understand what he is teaching. His notes are all over but aren't difficult to follow as long as your paying attention.
I enjoyed Prof Spear's class a lot! He is quirky and fun and makes otherwise boring material more interesting in his own way. The hour & 15 minutes drag on some days and other days fly by. The assignments are here and there - mainly you just have to keep up on the readings from the books. (you buy 5 paperback books i.e: Plato, Des Cartes..)
Professor Spear is quirky and funny and you can tell he loves philosophy. He makes the topics easier to understand, so even if the readings went over your head, you will always discuss it in class. Great professor!
Professor Spear is a really great teacher. He assigns a lot of reading and short papers. His lectures are fairly interesting, and he tries to break them up with little stories that he can relate to the material he's lecturing about. He's a bit of a tough grader, but he wants his students to do well.
I really enjoyed taking logic with Spear. Class was tough at times but a lot of it can be simplified to solving a puzzle. Grades generously on tests and exams. The few homework assignments we had were easy. Would recommend to students who have already taken a prior philosophy class. Overall, very nice guy and always willing to help when you need it
You can tell Spear really enjoys philosophy and he is excellent at explaining readings in ways that anyone could understand. He has some pretty silly jokes but is all around a really great professor.
He is a quirky dude but his heart is in the right place. His exams can be a bit tricky but overall just your average class- put effort in and your grade will reflect that.
Professor Spear is a really great guy. He is very humorous which keeps class entertaining. However, he does give an excessive amount of quizzes that are crucial for your grade. If you are taking logic for the math credit like I did I don't recommend it. It was a lot harder than I anticipated, but if you are taking it I would take it with Spear!
Professor Spear is super nice and funny. But, logic was very hard. I took it for my math requirement and it was a lot more difficult than I expected. He gives quizzes about every other week, and they are pretty hard. The class requires a lot of studying and effort to get a good grade.
Spear was a great professor for the class. I took it for a math credit and was pleased with it. He is helpful and makes it easy to understand a difficult subject. He made the class interesting with his jokes and personality. Willing to help students outside of class as well. He also does curve test grades so that helps a lot!
I took Logic. Its a pretty basic course, but Professor Spear was very clear in lecture, supportive in discussion, and helpful for all worksheets. I have no warnings to give about him. I would highly recommend Professor Spear given my experience with his teaching methods and demeanor. Seriously this guy is a professional, competent instructor.
Professor Spear loves philosophy. He will always do his best to answer questions and fully explain concepts. He is a hard grader on papers, but the material is pretty easy if you pay attention during the lecture.
He is very engaging and makes the material interesting.
Prof. Spear is one of the worst professors I've had. He is a harsh grader, but does not give constructive feedback. A 94% is an A, but he said at he beginning of the year that only perfect papers would merit a 94. He also takes attendance VERY seriously too, so don't even think about missing a class because you're sick; your grade will suffer.
Professor Spears is a great guy and a pretty good professor. There is a lot of reading and just sitting in class listening to him talk instead of engaging and talking with peers. I would highly recommend taking this class credit no credit so you don't have to worry about being perfect on your writing assignments.
Wonderful professor. Attending lecture is a must, as is reading the text. He is very passionate about the subjects being discussed during lecture and will answer any questions, no matter how ridiculous. He makes a very difficult philosophical discussions entertaining and understandable.
His lectures are very engaging, he makes the material very interesting, fun, and applicable. Really great at answering questions, not annoyed by tangent discussions, and his 8am classes are worth it. Each student is given an impressive amount of attention in feedback. Requires hard work, but it's really worth it. Had him first 2 semesters, 12/10
Professor Spear is an amazing, caring professor. The man is so professional and can make a boring subject pretty interesting. I wasn't looking forward to this class, but it ended up being my favorite one this semester. He is how every professor should be, seriously, the guy's a gem. If you have to take this class, take it with Spear!
He is a really amazing professor. He knows his stuff like not other and will give detailed explanations. Lots of notes, reading, and papers. Lectures can drag on but pay attention and take notes and you will do fine. Ive noticed he is a harder grader.
Prof. Spear is soooo funny. He's kind of a nerd, but in a really funny way. I have him for Intro to Ethics, which is a class he doesn't normally teach, but he does such a good job at explaining what ethics is, and I would definitely want to have him for another philosophy course. If you get Prof. Spear, consider yourself lucky.
Spear is a really nice and funny guy. But there is homework pretty much every time (a short paper and a reading) and it's honestly kind of a lot. His quizzes are pretty hard too but he curves some of them. I think i'd try and find a prof that doesn't give as much hw.
Funny and nice guy but you will have homework every single time you are in class, I'm talking 2 papers a week at least. Its not worth it and he is a tough grader. The class adds so much extra stress due to all the papers that are due. Do not take this class unless you want to constantly be doing ethics homework.
Lots of hw. Usually two papers per class of hw(lengths very). Also he does participation and even you're there every time and participate in class you'll get around a 9/10. Very lecture heavy which is very boring. Tests are also very hard and half open ended. Grades papers pretty tough as well. I would not re take this class. Way too much for a G.E
I literally have two words for this dude. Chill out. Do not take the 100 level Ethics class with this guy. He just really takes it way too serious for it to be an intro course. I was told that Ethics was supposed to be fun but he literally took every ounce of fun out of it. Call me salty but this class isn't worth all the work.
While a philosophy lecture would put most people to sleep, spear makes it funny and relatable. He takes old, confusing, literature and relates it to modern day life making it way easier to understand. He often adds humor to the lessons which also makes it easier to stay awake and pay attention. Be prepared for a lot of reading homework though.
Spear is a great professor, but you will have so many writing assignments it isn't even funny. He is heavy on class participation as well. He makes philosophy interesting and engaging. Definitely looking forward to the second half of sequence.
Professor Spear is AMAZING. He loves Philosophy, is incredibly engaging in lecture, hilarious and he makes class fun. I see people complaining about having a lot of reading and writing to do and all I have to say is.. DUH? Philosophy is lecture/reading/paper heavy by nature, show up to class and actually put in effort and you'll honestly be fine!
Awesome Professor
Professor Spear a really fun professor! I love his lecture and the little jokes he throws in. Although the class can be bit work heavy in terms of papers, if you put the work into it you should do fine.
Spear really took time to get to know everyone in the class; it's one thing I love about the Honors College. However, you'll have a writing assignment nearly every week along with one 10+ page paper due around finals. It's more work than other classes I've had. Also he loves squirrels.
I took Prof. Spear for the excelled Spring/Summer PHI103 class and I definitely struggled with the class, but he's super understanding and a really sweet guy. I email him all the time and he always gets back within the hour. You have to show up, though, or you will for sure struggle
I took this class way back in 2015 with Professor Spear and to this day this was still my favorite class I've ever taken at GV (and it is NOWHERE near my major!) He made this topic so interesting and he's a super awesome guy.
Professor Spear is a great professor. He has a sense of humor and makes the lectures interesting. Since it was the first year teaching this class it felt a little scared and confused at times. Beware of quizzes, papers, and weekly reading journals! If you put the effort in and participate it isn't hard to get a good grade.
Professor Spear is entertaining and holds interesting lectures. It is important to read before class to better follow the information in lecture. Be sure to take notes as he does not post lecture slides on blackboard often and the information will be needed when you get to the final exam.
This class is nothing what I signed up for, his quizzes are extremely hard and he is a hard grader when it comes to the essays (there is multiples and they are more than 3 pages) I personally would avoid this class if you could. Repeats himself and is super boring lectures that don't help for the quizzes or final.
Dr. Spear really cares about his students. He is very passionate and wants everybody to understand and do well. However, it can be tough to catch some material because your "lecture notes" are either writing down what he's talking about or his chicken scratch on the whiteboard. A tough grader on some things, but he answers any and all questions.
I loved Spear. While there was a ton of reading material involved, it made sense if you attend class. He is always available to help students in anyway he can, and he gives really good feedback on turned in assignments so you can edit them. He is great and just wants his students to succeed.
Amazing Professor! Very entertaining! lectures are heavy but he keeps you entertained. Very funny. He gives LOTS of homework and essay assignments and is a hard grader. Tests and quizzes are easy if you pay attention in class. He is always willing to give extra help and explain something again. Lots of readings and one book assingment is required.
Nice guy, however, coming from an all A student, his medical ethics class is ridiculously hard. No matter how many hours I study, no matter the strategy used to study, still cannot raise my grade. He grades written homework very strictly too.
Professor Spear is honestly a good person, but his class is unnecessarily hard. The amount of work you have to put in is insane for the level of class this is. He grades papers extremely hard. Also, a 94 is an A which is a little extreme.
Interesting lectures/discussions. Hes good at answering questions. Usually a reading and journal response before each class. There seemed to be a lot more assignments toward the end of the semester, which was a bit overwhelming. Listen, participate, and take good notes during class. There were a few quizzes throughout and a final exam.
The class was very interesting and prof Spear is nice and approachable and makes the content more entertaining. There was a lot of reading and writing but he was a fairly generous grader. The hardest part would probably be the quizzes they were pretty difficult but passable if you paid close attention in class.
Awesome lecturer! A lot to learn for this class and he does a great job teaching it.
Very good professor, but the class is super hard. He tries his hardest and he tries to use real world examples, but this class feels so insanely hard for no reason. Dont think logic will be an easy A, so much time has to go into this class.
He was super nice and helpful, but the assignments that are not 1 point he grades super tough. He expects the written homeworks to be perfect. His lectures are long but informational. He does participation grades so make sure you participate.
He is chill and pretty nice. Very smart. We have a bunch of easy 1 point assignments and then we have like 2-3 high point assignments. He grades these very very hard. It has to be more than perfect and I think it is rather impossible to get a 100 percent.
Professor Spear is a really good professor, and you can tell he really likes teaching about philosophy. Though the class can be tough, I mean it's a philosophy class so you're going to have to logically think, he is really understandable and is always there if you need help. You have to attend class though or you won't know what's going on.
Prof Spear was a great professor. You can tell he really cares for his students and what he teaches. The class was online but he did his best to make it engaging. He can be a tough grader on the written homework but his expectations are always clear and he responds quickly to emails and is helpful at office hours. Take him if you can!
This class was so hard. Although his lectures are somewhat amusing, it is hard to keep all the information for this class straight. There is many assignments and it feels like he pushes all the big assignments back to back. This class is unnecessarily hard and is in no way an easy A.
Professor Spear is super nice, but his class is unnecessarily hard. He grades super hard on the large assignments, and you must pay extremely close attention in class to do well on any of the assessments. You also must deeply understand the concepts and be able to apply them to do well on assessments.
Professor Spear is a great professor. He's engaging, funny, and genuinely cares about his students learning and understanding of the material. The lectures were long but interesting. There's a homework assignment due before each class but they were fairly easy and took no longer than 10-15 minutes if you already did the reading(s) for the week.
Great prof. who cares about students success. A good deal of reading, but nothing that can't be handled. I've taken multiple of his classes and have still yet to find any gripes or issues. One of the better, if not best, professors I have had at GVSU.
Professor Spear is GREAT! He is hilarious, talented at explaining complex ideas, and good at gauging and supplementing the class understanding. PHI 204 is a new course, but it was so interesting and topics were applicable for our lives (especially for an introductory philosophy credit). Def sign up for a class with Spear given the opportunity
This is professor will burn you out and give you depression. do not take this class or you will see what I am talking about.
This was one of my favorite classes. It was challenging but in a good way. I learned so much and Prof Spear was so helpful and good at explaining topics that were hard or deep. Topics were relevant to real-world situations and readings were sometimes long but mostly interesting. Attendance wasn't mandatory but skipping left you far behind.
Professor Spear is amazing, he makes an effort to learn the names of his students (which is rare). He obviously LOVES teaching and philosophy. 10/10 guy. The class itself is a challenge and has a decent amount of homework. Don't be scared to take this class but it will definitely make you think.
One of my favorite profs at GV. He made PHI so engaging and kept the energy high in his lectures. Topics related to current day which helped with understanding. If you need a PHI credit that actually applies to the world today, take PHI 204! Points for participation but only 3 in class quizzes and a final. Homework twice a week but pretty simple.
Prof Spear was a very upbeat, memorable professor. He is very passionate about philosophy, but the class was sometimes very confusing and repetitive. He has a great sense of humor and I highly recommend interacting with his lectures to better understand the topics at hand. The tests were a bit tricky, but overall, he is a lenient grader.
Great professor. Lots of work outside of class, but was very useful for the quizzes and papers. Part of your grade is participation. The lectures were very engaging. Overall he was a great professor and I highly recommend taking his class.
He is a decent guy with a good heart, but he loads on work like it's nobody's business. The class has nothing to do with the name of it you will just be talking about the same philosophers you talk about in every class except he expects 10x the work. He also grades on participation so if you do not speak in every class, you'll lose points.
Professor Spear is hilarious, but is all over the place when explaining material. There are many assignments each week that are pass-fail. If you do poorly on in-class written exams or quizzes there it is almost impossible to bring your grade up, so make sure you show up to class. Definitely not a easy gen ed, hard to get in the A range.
There are a lot of homework assignments per week. Class is very all over the place and hard to follow along. If you do badly on the quizzes it will tank your grade. If you do badly on written assignments it will also tank your grade. For a gen ed class, it was way too difficult and way too much information. Do not recommend it at all.
This class is not as difficult as people make it out to be. Prof Spear is really nice. Grading can be a bit tough on quizzes and papers. However, if you pay attention even a little in class it's no problem. I would even say that studying is unnecessary for the most part. He is super patient and will explain anything if you ask.
Prof
He's very nice but there is too much reading, hard quizzes with not enough time to complete them, and he is a very hard grader and has a no tech policy, also hands out too many papers. I'm usually a straight A student and I had a really hard time. Too much work for a gen ed. On the positive side he was nice enough to not have a textbook.
Prof Spear was great. No real complaints about him. I would be careful when choosing this class for a quick gen ed credit. Sooo many papers handed out. Daily readings on some pretty boring topics. He is a tough grader. The exams are pretty lengthy. He was super helpful with answers to questions, but a tough class overall.
