clear, concise, helpful, nice guy
Best Finance Teacher Ever.......You actually will learn something from this very intelligent and prestigious man
sucked!!
Hofstra is lucky to have someone of his intelligence.
Best Professor. He is an intelligent man who is able to pass his knowledge on to most his students. Clear, concise teaching. Wish there were more like him at Hofstra.
Best professor ever. You learn so much in class. He's tough but he's definitely very patient and helpful. Always takes his time for students. He does everything he can for his students. Very inspiring!
I liked the guy. VERY SMART, but I thought he taught a bit fast, so did others. You also had to really know your stuff when taking his tests. I ended up with a pretty good grade, despite what I thought I would get.
Can be difficult, But you will learn a lot of Info that will be useful inreal world. Must take him if you are a Finance major
Probably the best professor i had in Hofstra... He teaches a lil fast but goes back and makes sures everyone knows what he is teaching... he knows everyones name...he is all about the kids he teaches he is such a great teacher we need more like him
Great teacher, helpful, and friendly. Tests are very hard, but you will learn. Very fair with his grading policy.
Great teacher. If you show up, you pass. Helpful too if you go to office hours.
He is A Great Professor.I Mean GREAT.Very caring professor and makes sure that everyone is learning the material. One of Hofstra's Finest. I hope he stays here, b/c it would be a major loss if he ever left. Take him for all Your Finance classes.
he acts difficult to get you to listen and learn, great professor best one ive had ever! as long as you attend class and read you will do great! i loved him so much im taking him for 110
awesome teacher every class is like 10 points of test material dont miss class and tests are a breeze
This class was easier than Fin 101 because of Spieler. I learned more of Fin 101 in his 110 class in just a few weeks and then some. HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU TAKE HIM!
Good Professor. A little hard and demanding, but finance overall can be a tough class. Would reccomend taking him. He helps push every student through to the end.
Excellent teacher. One of the best I have had at Hofstra. He knows finance like the back of his hand and can teach that knowledge to his students. Very fair grader as well.
The best, clearest, most helpful, most approachable finance prof ever. Day 1 he seems harsh, but stay with him. He's very nice. Finance is tough but he's such a great prof, it becomes easy. You'd have to try really hard not to learn enough to pass.
The best teacher Ive had in Hofstra. Knows what he is doing and if u pay attention everything is easy.
Great teacher, unbelievably challenging but i learned a lot. obsessed with timelines though :)
great teacher. He is too generous with his grading and people don't do well because 9 out of 10 they are lazy. But it helps and it encourages you to major in finance. I did.
took him for 101 and 110, hes one of the few profs in the dept who knows how to teach. Hes very intelligent and clear in his teaching.
Dr. Spieler was def the best professor I had in my 4 years at Hofstra, and I did not even major in Finance (Minored in it). He is demanding of his students, especially with this class (Security Analysis), but you learn so much from him.
Slackers beware!!! This is the most demanding course I have taken at Hofstra. The cases he assigns take FOREVER but you def learn a lot!!! I feel much more prepared for the finance world. Dr. Spieler is extremely smart and is extremely nice. Take him!

He is the hardest professor there is in the finance dept. He knows what he is teaching but his tests are ridiculous. He does let a second chance on the exams, though. His class is too much Pressure and very stressful.
He is the best professor I have ever had at Hofstra, his tests are very hard, you need to know everything, but he is good and you will learn alot, all you have to do is put the effort in and you will be rewarded, slackers beware he is not for you, your gonna have to really work for you A
Fin 101 and 110 are a joke. This class is hard. Very hard. A lot of work, but you learn. All Finance majors should be required to take him. You learn, you learn, you learn.

Teaches finance he does- If you have a heavy schedule and can not handle it He will Fail your IN A BLINK OF AN EYE!

This prof is a clown! Couldn't make it on Wall St. so he takes it out on the students who will...
Quite possibly the best teacher at Hofstra. He knows his material cold and can clearly articulate it to students. He expects a lot but that is how you learn more in a class. DO NOT TAKE BISHNOI he can't hold a candle to Spieler. Spieler is also a very nice guy.
DONT TAKE HIM unless you have unlimited hours to spend on his work. doesn't teach and isn't helpful it's not worth it take it with someone else
He is probably the best teacher at hofstra, the guy knows his stuff, dont listen to anyone who says hes not helpful, if you ask for help he is there for you day or night and i mean even at 5am. If you want to really learn he is the best, he will teach you waht other professors havent, there is no professor i would recommend more, be prepared to wor
This is the most demanding class in the whole business school. If you want to learn def take spieler. If u wanna slack off this is not the place.. he will fail you before a blink of the eye.
this guy is impossible. who the hell does he think he is?? apparently he wants every finance major to have to take him for this course. how egotistical is that?? plus, he is supposed to be responsible for the copy machines in cv starr and they are never working. . . this guy sucks
Avoid this class at ALL COST. You will hate your life during the semester and will have no time for anything except your cases and impossible tests. Test are designed so you don't finish. He will make you miserable but as the semester progresses he gets a little easier (but not much). He is fair with grades at the end if your not a slacker!

There is nothing easy about any spieler class. So much work you will not know were to begin. You will spend 15 hours doing the wrong thing then another 15 hours fixing it. the test are no joke. Slackers beware. hard workers will be rewarded. You will learn. only students who want to be on top should take him. Best prof finance has to offer.

Not that hard of a class..2 tests and a final, plus a stock project and book reports. Do your work and your guaranteed a B
Definately not an easy class. There are hw assignments, tests, final, book reports and a stock track assignment. If you do the work, you'll earn a good grade. Not a hard grader. I pulled off a B+ and did average on the tests. Good professor overall.
The tests are 15 pages long and you have to show all the work. During lecture he will go off topic and you HAVE to write down everything he says. There are mandatory book reports, a stock track assignment that lasts for three months, hw, three tests, the final is cumulative. Avoid at all cost.
Great professor. Teaches you like a Wall Street pro. Give this man a raise!
I am in his 160 class. It is NOT IMPOSSIBLE to get an A in his class. I got an A, and I didn't really study hard or anything. yea, I did bad on the first test and that motivated me to start listening in class. just pay attention in class and ask for help if you dont know whats going on..you can get an A too especially in 101..
slacker beware of Speiler! but if you want to learn and have interesting lectures, he's the man... 3 tests, 1 pro, book reports.... ALOT OF WORK! test are long and hard, studying for hours is necessary...u must know the material backwards!! great experiance if you really want to learn finance!
Ok at first this guy comes off ass an ego maniac. He tries to scare all of the stupid kids out of the class the first day by trying to seem like a real hard ass! Spieler gives you a sick IPO project that you can take to interviews with you, but it has to look professional or you'll get an F for sure. Good professor.
Okay, let's be honest, Spieler is arrogant. The class is difficult. I had him about 3 years ago and didn't know what I was getting into by taking his class. This is a warning to all students. Be prepared to spend hours study for his course.
This guy has more swagger than Gordon Gecko. Very informative. If you show interest, come to class, and don't mess around in class he will be more than willing to help you with any difficulties you may have. Give this man another raise.
This class is extremely a waste of time unless ur a finance major...Has his TA teach the class and makes it impossible to fully understand whats going on...nice guy but hard class
One of the best, if not the best Professor at Hofstra University. One you get to know him, he's a very kind and understanding person. Knows his material cold and has experience as an Actuary, which aids in his knowledge of Quantitative finance.
BEST TEACHER EVER!!! take great notes and you will do great on the exam.. plus if everyone does bad on exams he will let you do test corrections
I took him as part of MBA program in the city. One of the best professors that I had if you want to learn something. Teaches like a wall-street pro and knows his stuff cool. He could appear arrogant but actually is very helpful. Definitely not an easy class and you will work like a dog. But it is worth it if you really want to learn.
Commuters beware- spieler missed NINE classes. and none were canceled. so i hope you like driving to school only to hear the TA "teach" for 5 minutes and then head back home. class was a waste of my time. easy A, but what a waste of my money...
Comes off a bit cold, but welcome to finance. Really knows his stuff and teaches all material in an extremely practical manner. Exams are hard, but let us do corrections. He missed a lot of classes with no cancellations, but we still managed to get everything done.
You have to go to class if you want to learn. You will learn EVERYTHING to do with finance, at least at an intro level. He is AMAZING!!! One of the best professors I've ever had. Tests are all fill in, no MC, extra credit offered, no make ups. He is so knowledgeable and really kind, even with latenesses!
what a great professor. you will learn a lot. he really knows his stuff and teaches it so you can still understand tough topics. if you study go to class and pay attention you will be fine. no surprises on the tests. he is straight-forward and actually makes it a point to get to know the students in his class. best professor ive had at hofstra
Great Professor, definitely take him you woul lean alot. Best professor at hofstra...definitely take him...
Dr. Spieler is the best teacher in the finance department. His class is difficult, but if you attend class and study your notes, the tests will be easy. He only puts material that was covered in class on the tests and gives you an overview beforehand. If youre the type of person that doesnt attend class, dont bother taking him.
Professor Speiler was a very good teacher but the workload is quite extreme. Overall experience was worthwhile and I left with a much better understanding of finance
Easily the best professor in the Finance Department. The material is hard, but if you show effort he's a lenient grader. He knows his stuff and if you ask him for help he will go out of his way to help you. No need to buy the textbook. He is the textbook and he will also pass out supplemental "packets". Great professor.
This guy is tough! def. go to class because everything that he goes over is going to be on the exams. exams are hard no mc all essay and problem solving. He is arrogant and thinks finance is the best thing in the world. He shows up to class late all the time and doesnt notify you when he isnt coming to class. He jumps from topic to topic.
Unless you have a lot of time to devote to this class, I would not recommend it. You may learn a lot if you are willing to put in the long hours of reading and assignments, however. I would not recommend taking multiple classes along with this class. He is extremely arrogant but is a lenient grader. The final exam was 31 pages long/4 hours.
Andrew may fits more well in the business industry. He is not that kind of "nerd" professor and only good at academia. He is a people person, has High EQ, and has very good people skills. He understands student's situation and care about his students. He can be a great mentor. He also teaches very well and generous on grading. Highly recommended.
Spieler came off the first class as one of those arrogant, "i don't care about my students" type of guy,but he turned out to be one of the best. Sure he seems like he doesn't care, but the IPO project made us do research we never thought we would be able to do. His tests are long and everyone pretty much failed, but he curved by like 30 points.
He's a good teacher and he teaches you so that everything is clear. However his tests are extremely hard (all short answer no MC) so he requires a lot of studying, and his stock track project is annoying
Beginning of the semester he was quite arrogant. As the semester went on he got better. However tests are incredibly long, 15-20 pages while other classes tests are 3-4 pages. Learned alot in class though
Professor Spieler is extremely knowledgeable and competent in his field. His tests are very time consuming (you WILL use the entire class time) and difficult, but he certainly enables you to do well if you put in the effort. I definitely learned a lot in this class.
The best professor at Hofstra University he is extremely competent, helpful and smart professor. He makes use of his common sense when dealing when his students and honestly he should be the chair of the department of finance at Hofstra. Yes he is that good, for sure take his class.
Dr. Spieler definitely knows his stuff and teaches you a lot, but he doesn't follow the curriculum very much and gives unnecessary assignments. All the work he makes you put in helps to a degree, but it adds too much stress for a minimal grade. Everything is a "plausible threat" for the exam and he will "F9" you. Intimidating man.
Best professor at Hofstra. Learn a lot in the class but makes you work for it. Very helpful for finance majors because it helps a lot in the higher level classes. 2 tests and a project that takes forever. He grades the project very easily however.
You can definitely tell that the professor is extremely smart. Good teacher, however, the explanation he gives when giving up homework is not always as clear as wanted.
So far Dr. Spieler is my favorite prof. Even though I am not a finance major, I loved his fin 110 class. Expect 2 MIDTERM, a Final and a project. I had a really good background in finance so it helped me A LOT for this class. Midterm are straight forward and they are LONG, but if you take good notes and study those notes YOU WILL get an A.
knows what his talking about and is a very smart guy, a bit arrogant. expects you know everything that comes prior to his course. He teaches a lot, but the amount of work overwhelms you and just become focused on finishing it as oppose to learning. Tests are terribly hard. I mean TERRIBLY. Text, atten, notes, study. avoid if you have a full load.
Took as a summer class and it was the overwhelming. Content is extremely interesting but the 3 excel projects, HW's, 3 book reports, extra papers not on syllabus, and midterm/final requires you do work non-stop to finish on time. Not a hard grader, but considers your effort & understanding into the grades. Hard for full-time employees to do.
Spieler is one of the hardest professors at Hofstra, but he will make you feel accomplished. I failed my first test and got an A- in the class because I showed improvement and went to office hours. He rewards students who work hard and make an effort. Go to class, exams are based purely on lectures. Be prepared for random questions on the exams.
Hands down the Best Professor at Hofstra. He is extremely knowledgable and does an amazing job at teaching concepts and applying logic to what most people perceive as strictly quantitative. He is fluent in many financial topics and rewards students who want to learn. take him you wont regret it. He challenges you to be your best
I entered the course not remembering ANYTHING from FIN 101, but the HW he assigned early in the course was a great refresher diving into FIN 110. Content is by NO MEANS easy, but he welcomes office hr visits, offers plenty of ex. cred opportunities, and exams are based solely on lectures & related coursework. If FIN is not your forte, TAKE SPIELER!
He's a tough professor for sure, but every test comes straight from the notes so it's important to show up for class and take a lot of notes. He is open for questions and will help you. It's a tough class, but perfectly doable
Dr. Spieler is an amazing professor who cares about his students. If you're a finance major you should absolutely take him because you'll learn a lot. If you go to class and take good notes you'll be fine for the tests. He offers plenty of extra credit so even if you don't do well on one test you can still get an A. Tip: DO YOUR PROJECT EARLY!
Prof Spieler is a great professor but it is a DIFFICULT class, far from an easy A. He gives out a decent amount of extra credit but to get a high grade you need to do it. Tests are long and difficult. He's a great guy, but a little intimidating. If you're just looking to pass FIN 101 with a higher grade, there are definitely easier options.
Spieler has got to be one of the most intelligent professors I've ever met. He knows his stuff and is very confident in his teaching. He is a tough professor but you WILL learn through his lectures or through his guest speakers! Tests were extremely long but doable. Final was killer but again doable. He's a great professor and a very smart man!
He is really knowledgeable about finance. But its not worth taking if you have too much workload. Too much research to do some hw questions. The midterm and final is hard. Also, there is too much work to do: two projects and two book reports. Too many hours went into this class and suffered bad grades from my other classes. Too much stress
The smartest man I have ever met at Hofstra University. A must take professor at all costs. You will learn so much more than you think you know in the class. A humbling experience for me for sure. You are missing out on something incredible if you don't take him.
People love Spieler and his never-ending lectures, but I don't see it. He doesn't teach 75% of the stuff you're graded on because he expects everyone to have the same knowledge that he does. You definitely learn a lot in his class but he wouldn't be my go-to professor. If it wasn't for open book assignments, everyone would fail.
Say goodbye to your GPA and social life once you enter this class. He assigns semester long projects with minimal directions that confuses you even more than it already did. The only positive about this class is that the midterm is take-home. Besides that, he sets you up to fail. No prayers can help you get above a B in a Spieler class. Good luck.
Really, really, really bad. Spieler's class is unnecessarily hard, and not because the material is difficult. He gives no direction and all of his assignments are almost comically vague. You leave his office more confused than when you went in, so the fact that he's always there doesn't matter. Tests are ridiculously long. Avoid at all costs.
Best professor in the Finance department. Class is hard and stressful for sure but people who complain a ton are upset their easy ride through the finance curriculum comes to a crashing stop with Spieler. Learned more from him than anyone else at Hofstra.
Good professor, however I feel the presentation of the material needs improvement. Spieler is a smart and well respected by the finance faculty. Unfortunately, I feel that I retained zero information from his class - it was just too much crammed into one semester.
A ton of crammed work - lighten up work load and kids will learn more. Not specific at all regarding group projects. Nice caring man but way too much work. If a little structure is added course will be better.
The class was very difficult with a lot of tough assignments/projects, but you would learn so much from the class. The course has a lot of material, and Spieler makes you work a lot so you understand what you're doing. Not an easy A at all, but have to work long hours and late nights to do well.
He's a great professor. A lot of work, but I've learned more in this class than all of my other class combined. He gives extra credit constantly so no matter what you can always improve your grade.
Spieler is a great and intelligent professor but is very hard. I took this class during the summer and can tell you that this was a nightmare. He makes you learn rather than get a good grade, which is why he offers some extra credit. Beware of the HW as his short answers require at least 4 sentences. Take his class if you're a finance major/minor.
I took Professor Spieler in the Summer 2021 and I learned more in this one class than in all of my last semester classes. He makes you work for your grades but it is worth taking him if you really want to learn. Spieler offers a lot of extra credit and his overall goal is to make you learn not just get through the class.
It was definitely a little tough trying to get through this class, especially since I took it over the summer. There was definitely a lot of work but I'm glad there were ample opportunities for extra credit. Make sure you are very specific when giving an answer because Dr. Spieler will definitely critique it if it is not specific enough.
Expect 3 home works in a week. Super tough on gradings and does not give clear explanations. Always late for classes.
This was the hardest class I have taken in the finance department, but it teaches you a lot. Although a lot is not necessarily taught in class, you will learn a lot from the projects and homework you do outside of class time. Two big projects (each around 35-50 hours of work) along with a big take home midterm (25 hours) and finals (20 hours) + hw.
I had Dr. Spieler for FIN-101, and I'm glad I took him again for FIN-110. He can be a little tough, but he offered so many opportunities for extra credit and I tried taking advantage of as much as I could to help my final grade. Was even generous to extend the deadline on certain things but there is a lot of work in general as well.
Spieler, is a good professor, however he changes his teaching style year over year, direct quote. He assigns many home works and exams/ projects. Attendance was not taken however you wont pass with out attending and reading the text book chapters that are assigned.
This is a very difficult class, but definitely worth it. I learnt more in this class than most of my other classes combined. There are many Homework's, readings, and projects to complete, but they are very useful and informative. This class will take up most of your time.
Excellent professor! He's tough on his students and he expects a lot from them, but if you put in the effort he will do his best to give you the grade he thinks you deserve.
One of the professors who I can say without a doubt cares about his students and wants to see them succeed. People complain about how much he assigns, but it's really not that bad. Ultimately, I feel like I learned more in his class than most of my others combined.
I took this professor and it was a nightmare. He assigns a lot of homework. It's difficult to put all of my effort into his class while also taking other classes. He needs to understand that it is not normal to assign lengthy projects and 4 hours worth of homework a night.
Worst professor I have had. Absurd workload, assigned so much stuff the entire semester, impossible to complete Myself & the entire class were lost, since he went through lectures so fast, not fully explaining. Expected you to know everything, was rude, didn't treat it like a 101. Exams impossible, so much information, no review or study help.
The class was terrible. The professor assigns an absurd amount of work and expects you to put all your effort when taking other difficult courses. Doesnt provide much feedback and is very vague when it comes to assignments! Didn't learn much due to workload. If you have the option to not take his course, then don't, not worth it.
I had a great experience with this professor. He is really good at teaching and also organized guest lectures that helped a lot during the course. If you put in the effort and show dedication, he will give you good grades. Yes, there are assignments, but they help you understand the subject better. I would definitely take his class again.
FIN160 with Professor Spieler is no easy feat. The workload is intense, with lengthy projects and nightly homework that can consume hours. However, the material is valuable, and tools like Unstuck study can make study prep more efficient. Attend every class and utilize all resources to succeed in this challenging but rewarding course.
If you want to be lectured about how "you kids need to work hard" in place of finance lectures, then go ahead and take him. If you dont want that and want to learn finance, take literally anyone else. How this guy got tenure is insane.
Prof Spieler's class is anything BUT Corp. Finance. His work load is like he thinks his class is your only class. Not to mention his test format is EXPLAINING EVERY ANSWER. If not for this word limit, this would be MUCH LONGER. Point is: -If you want to suffer, take him. If you want to actually learn about corp. finance, take someone but this guy.
Number 1: He comes off as arrogant, not welcoming, uncomfortable to be around. Number 2: If you want a social life don't take this class. He assigns too much work, and thinks this is your only obligation. Number 3: He's picky with HW. If you make the smallest error, he takes points off. It could be correct, but he'll take points off formatting.
He has treated me with nothing but disrespect in just the first few weeks of class. You will have hour long homework assignments every night. Exams are impossible to study for and he's typically unclear in his feedback on why he penalized you. Oh, and if you want to pass the exams, you better attend every class and listen to EVERYTHING he says.
He does assign a good amount of work however, he is a great professor and will accommodate you when you need something. He does make you buy his book and do book reports and there is a project but you have a lot of time to get it done. Make sure to attend class although he does do zoom recordings. He also offers a lot of extra credit !!!!
Dr. Spieler was one of the hardest professors I have ever had. He gave out a ton of homework and half the time I don't think he was actually reading what I did on the homework. His exams are all open ended and can be based on literally anything he says in the class for the whole semester. Be ready to do a ton of work and feel stupid in this class.
Extremely hard professor, and one of the worst that I've ever had. He expects you to know everything from every class ever and uses extremely hard language that makes you very confused. He makes you do two projects with little structure or guidance. If you are not required to take this class DO NOT TAKE IT.
He doesn't care if you have something going on outside of class. You will have HW assignments every class, projects will be hard and almost impossible to complete, and he expects you to study an INSANE AMOUNT OF INFORMATION. NGL, the tests were short response, not MC, and were very hard, and even if you study for them, you may not pass. Extra cred.
Even though his class is more difficult than the average finance class, he makes sure that you learn the most that you can. He expects you to have a deep understanding of financial knowledge from previous finance classes. But, if you are willing to learn and put in full effort on the homework and projects, the benefits heavily outweigh the costs.
Very hard class. He assigns an insane amount of work and expects you to memorize EVERYTHING. If you don't study you will not pass. Homework's will take hours to complete and exams are all short response, NOT MC, and are based on minor concepts that he says in class and if you don't have good notes tying it to the lectures, you won't pass.
Worst class I've ever taken in my entire life. Lots of meaningless work, impossible tests when you have four other classes, he's essentially teaching you to become a slave in the system of corporate America. There's many things I'd rather do than take this class again. Hope Dr. Spieler enjoys the money he makes off making other lives miserable.
Professor Spieler is a good professor, he does front load the work in his class, which at first honestly is brutal and tough to get through, but at the end of the semester, the work load gets less which is a pro, almost like a small amount of work is left for the end of the year. He provides alot of extra credit!!! Trust me, you will need it.
Prof. Spieler clearly cares for students and offers lots of extra credit, but the workload is overwhelming and often feels like busywork. Exams are long and tough, and with no PowerPoint presentations, you have to catch everything he says. Only take his class if you're truly passionate about finance. Otherwise, it's not worth the stress.
You have better chances of passing any other class. Yes, he offers extra credit, but the amount of coursework he assigns and the effort he expects out of his students is nothing but a burden. He's also passive aggressive when you email him, and not to mention, the homework's have strict grading criteria and his tests are far from easy.
It's been a few weeks and this is far from an easy class. Assignments almost every day and it's so hard to keep up. Came off as passive aggressive in emails and was rude when you asked for an extension. NGL, the exams, even in an online course are far from easy. Only take if you're willing to give up hours of sleep.
From my experience, He is the best proffesor I ever took from, you can take his class if you are willing to put the effort. He is a sea of knowledge its up to you how to grasp it. I think no one has better Excel skills then him in the whole Hofstra. He is also pretty understanding and always available to clear your doubts.
