Very hard, but very good teacher
Nice guy. Knows his stuff.
Very hard teacher, but uses examples to help, very nice man, learned a lot!
Not very helpful, Cocky, Unpleasant
great teacher, helpful, if you really want to learn take his class and you will
wiling to help, difficult class
EXCELLENT prof, knows his stuff, read the chapters before class and study for the tests alot and all is well. I love going to class, and you can get up to 3% in extra credit on final grade. you'll work hard, but learn tons.
I took the class in the summer and it kicked my butt. BUT, I learned a lot! If you put forth a decent effort and read the material and study you will do well. He is quite knowledgeable and he uses plenty of examples. Tough but Fair!!
great guy. i learned a lot in his class and he was always willing to help out
Excellent professor! He uses a lot of example and cases to help explain material. Tests are somewhat challenging but overall not to bad.
I didn't really like this professor. He seems like a nice guy but it feels like he doesnt care about his students. Class overall is tough and I usually like psych but I didnt do well in his class. Try another professor!
Dr. Swihart is possibly the finest professor in the psych department. Students who are willing to work hard will learn a temendous amount of information. Nice butt too!

Hes cool but his class is hard!
Awsome professor. Possibly the smartest man on campus
If your a scientist or a doctor, this class would be fine. But for people looking to get a GEN ED out of the way, watch out. This guy tries to make you into an expert psychologist or something. He'll make you sound like an idiot if your wrong on something
A neuropsychologist so it's all about the brain. Tests are challenging but if you ready what is asked, you'll be fine. Smart man, but challenging
swihart is a very tough professor, and his tests are pretty tough, but he's an awesome professor. He wants you to learn the stuff, and his lectures are very interesting. Great guy overall. Tough class.
I learned so much from him. He is a great teacher and you will find his class interesting. He has been one of the best teachers that I have ever had!
He is a very smart and informative professor. His class is very interesting and i learned a lot. Tests are hard if you don't study. This is not a blow off class.
I found the class challenging, but it definitely was not because of him. He made class very enjoyable. Test were about 50 multiple choice with 2 to 4 essays. And it was easy to get any questions answered.
A little distressing when he tells you the first day that 1/3 of the class will fail. I missed a 2 classes before a test and was told he would not "go over the whole class lecture again" and I was on my own. I didn't like him.
This was a hard class for me. I generally like Psych but I struggled a little. I went to him for help and he was willing to help , but you have a make an effort also. I would recommend this class, just make sure you pay attention and dont slack off.
Swihart is an incredible professor. He takes challenging material and makes it as easy and interesting as possible. I've had him 3 times, and always look for the classes he teaches. Very willing to help you or explain further if needed. Wants you to LEARN
He's a cool guy
was interesting, Very helpful, just make sure you study, i'd take the class again
This class is hard, so be prepared to study. He is a great teacher and will spend extra time and work with you to make sure you pass. He is a true teacher. You will learn lots of information.
Hard class, good teacher. He is really willing to help.
This is entry level pal. This guy expects you to know every single minor detail of every aspect of anything ever covered remotely in class. DO NOT TAKE!!
Could be the smartest professor I've had. Really down to earth an really informative. He does make you work though which I think is a good thing. I have had no trouble in any psyc. class since I've taken him
I had him for two classes in one semester and I was a little overwhelmed at first. He turned out to be my favorite professor because he explains so well. I suggest him for any psych class. He wants you to learn and you really do learn your material!
Best teacher that I have ever had. I learned more from him in the one semester I attended his class that I have learned in the 3 years I've been at SVSU combined. Take this class if you are into learning and getting the most for your (tution) money!!
Class was hard. jumps around a lot and won't come back to a subject. hard to take notes off of because he goes waaayyy to fast for the information he's giving you. Test are extremely hard also. Would not take again!
Great professor!
What an incredible teacher. I was a little nervous to take the class but was pleasantly surprised. He makes class interesting and provides lots of extra credit opportunities. GO TO CLASS, and TAKE NOTES. Class is not easy, but getting an A is definitely do-able. Would take him again in a heartbeat.
As I remember him saying the first day of class "You pay me to teach you, so take advantage of that." Great prof, he has fast paced, information packed lectures, but if you can't keep up, I recommend a voice recorder. Go to his office hours and study group, in all of which he is very helpful.
Great professor! Lectures are jam packed full of information, go to every class. Go to his study sessions most times gives you huge hints on what to study for exam. Really nice guy, you shouldn't have a problem enjoying his class.
He was an awesome prof - he went a little fast and his stories could sometimes distract you, but they were always relevant to the topic. DON'T MISS CLASS.
This class covered a lot of material but was extremely interesting. He provided many personal & relevant examples throughout his lectures. Dont miss any classes since you will fall behind very quickly. I really enjoyed his class and he has been one of my favorite professors ever!
The guy is extremely hard. All the people saying "Oh I learned so much it was so great" dont believe it. The 300 to 400 level he might be alright but this is a GEN ED. Give me a break
Awesome prof, talks fast so investing in a tape recorder would be wise! You can listen to it on your way to school/home and to check your notes. Review sheets before tests make it easy-very straight-forward. He loves helping students, don't be afraid to seeing him before the exam!
Very helpful, interesting lectures that keep your attention
He has been my favorite prof so far at SVSU. The class wasn't the easiest, but I learned so much! You absolutely can't miss class or it'll be so confusing. Dr. Swihart gives you a good look at what grad school will be like.
Very helpful and very interesting. Hard class but I actually looked forward to going. He is one of my favorites... highly recommend!!
Dr. Swihart is one of the best teachers I've had at SVSU so far. He makes the class interesting and is very helpful. He'll do anything so you pass the class. Tests are essay but if you take good notes and study good for tests you'll do great. Don't miss any classes cuz you fall behind quickly.
Best Class ever. He makes YOU come up with answers during lecture instead of just BS'ing about what he thinks all the time. "Saying nothing well is still saying nothing", and this man def. could teach a lion to eat red meat! I would take neuro with him, but Id also like to grad. before i die.
Why can't this guy teach biology classes, too?
Andrew is awesome! He really cares about how well you do only if you show you care. (Effort in = Effort Out) The only real negative is that he talks way too fast and his organization is logical to him, but sometimes not to us. Definately the Best in the Department thats for sure! ANDREW = AWESOME!
Great guy. His classes arent easy but he is willing to help and makes the coursework interesting so that you want to learn it
Andy is a great teacher.. go to study groups!!
Swihart tends to talk way to fast and the class can be very frustrating at times.
He talks fast, but is willing to repeat anything or clarify it for you. Tests are difficult, but he offers a few extra credit essays that are worth doing. Willing to help you if you are struggling.
Swihart really loves his topic, and it shows. His enthusiasm is contagious, and he goes out of his way to make sure students can succeed if they want to. However, he's speaks quickly, and his digressions from the topic are hard to put in your notes well... Plus, his exams are REALLY hard. You have to study hard, but he makes that easy.
He talks too fast and is hard to follow at times, but he is willing to clarify anything. The multiple choice is hard on the exam but the essay's are pretty easy (he tells you the topics beforehand), and will grade them in class if you want him to.
Swihart knows his topic very well. He talks really fast during the lecture, but he will slow down and answer questions, which is very helpful. The tests are very hard, but if you put many, many hours into studying it is very easy to get an A. I didn't like him at first, but I would definetly take the class again.
He's a great professor. He really knows his stuff and wants you to learn it. He is the most helpful teacher I have ever had. He's really nice and I would recommend him to anyone.
GREAT teacher. The class was hard, but as long as you actually read the book and took good notes it's very possible to get an A - I ended up with over 100%! I highly recommend him - he made the material very very interesting...
One of the hardest classes I have taken, but if you go to his office hours, he will help you through. I could have ended up with a much better grade if I knew what to expect from the beginning. Very bright man.
I felt like he talked the whole class period very fast and that i took notes on nearly every word he said however still found the exams very difficult. I would recommend listening more than writing every word he says. Also study the exam hints he gives you for the essay part, they are on there every time!!!
Class was very time consuming outside of class but the professor was very approachable.
Very easy. His tests are on what he covers. He is a great teacher and his class is interesting. Aced the final with one night of studying.
Professor Swihart is very knowledgable about Neuropsych. He explains topics so they are easy to understand, and uses life examples to clarify any misunderstandings. His exams are essay, but as long as you study of the study guide, you are good to go.
Swihart is so arrogant. if you go to him for help he talks down to you and makes you feel about 2 inches tall. Even on his tests comments he is cold and rude.
Nice guy. Very hard class. Unless you are going in Psychology, I would try to get another teacher. I have talked to other students who've said their psych teacher is easier. For a gen ed, I'd get another class. Multiple choice sucks. It is hard to know what is important and what is not to him. He likes to tell stories that tend to get off track.
Nice guy, glad to help people. Very tough class, wouldn't recommend to freshman or anyone that doesn't want to study all the time. Exams are hard, he tells you pretty much whats on the essays but multiple choice is next to impossible.
His tests are really hard. They are multiple choice but you have no idea what he is looking for when you choose your answer. There are easier professors. However, if you ever need extra help, he is very helpful and will take the time to work with you. My class asked if we could have study sessions with him and he agreed- Be avaiable
His lectures were rather confusing but he was very willing to help you. There are easier teachers though. I would not suggest taking him unless if you like to listen to lectures the whole time.
Dr. Swihart's is one of the tougher classes I've taken, but he knows what he's talking about and is extremely helpful if you don't understand something. Attendance not mandatory, but highly recommended! Pretty laid-back guy; very easy to get along with. Interesting class. I wish he taught more classes than he does! :)
Had no interest in Psyc until I took this class. Lots of people said how hard the exams were, but as long as you go to class you'll do fine. The class before exams he goes over almost everything you'll need to know. There are never outside assignments, just lecture and then the exams. I highly reccomend getting the study guide it helps a lot. EASY!
This class is very easy if you take notes and study. I used flashcards for every test and aced all of them. He's very helpful and holds study groups after hours if any one has questions. Really great and thorough professor, and really nice. LOVE! I definitely recommend!
Excellent professor; very knowledgable! If you know everything on the study guides you will be fine for the tests, but be prepared to study becuase there is quite a bit of information to know.
He is the best professor I have had at SVSU. The material is challenging and there is alot to learn but he really wants students to do good. Class is incredibly interesting and fun. Lets you write a paper to replace one test grade. I got an A+ in the class!
Don't let people fool you. He is the worst teacher! Unless you can write 90 miles a minute don't take the class because he expects you to write down everything he says while he talks (without stopping for a breath). His tests were all essays and all had to be in prof. speak. If you had the definition but couldn't think of term, it was wrong. AVOID!
Great professor. Attendence is encouraged, as his lectures contain A LOT of information. Tests are all essays and responses are graded critically on specificity. He's more than willing to help you if you ask! Interesting story, tons on info. Highly recommended.
very fair teacher if you listen to (interesting) lectures and study. All tests are essay format and he will check you on your grammer and spelling errors, you're effort will determine your grade!
Andy is the best teacher. He is incredibly smartand knows his stuff. His lectures are hard but he will stop and go back whenever asked. His exams r essay to make sure (for YOUR benefit) you know what he's teaching you. THE nicest guy to talk to and WILL bend over backwards for you, all you have to do is ask. Highly Recommend.
Dr. Swihart is a great professor. You must take very good notes and attend class in order to do well. Grade is based off of essay exams. You MUST study and use his terminology.
Was a great teacher. make sure to ask questions and ask for help after class and office hours..he appreciates that and really helps!
Great guy! If you are a psych major, TAKE HIS CLASS! It is challenging but you learn a lot of useful info! He is really smart and you can tell he knows his stuff and is really passionate! Ask for help, he is always open for questions and likes helping students.
Very difficult class, but truly one of the best teachers I've ever had. Very helpful and kind. He's very intelligent so this can be very intimidating. Don't let that scare you off. Difficult class, but if you put the time, it's possible.
Very intelligent professor. He was always there to assist me via email or in his office. You are expected to write a lot of notes and prepare extensively for exams. His class made me more dedicated to preparing myself for college courses.
This class will require a lot of studying, but is completely worth the time you'll put in. Swihart is an amazing resource and knows the content backwards and forwards. Tests are all essay and very detail-oriented. I didn't use a recorder in class, but almost everyone else did. Come to class ready to write down every word he says. WORTH IT!
Dr Swihart was one of the best professors I have ever had. That is including my grad school professors! He's so knowledgeable but make no mistake you have to work hard in his class. Don't expect to sit there and do nothing. You have to take notes and study because those exams are no joke! If you work hard, pay attention, study & clarify-U'll pass
AWESOME prof! Expects a lot out of you and you need to dedicate a lot of time to studying for his class, but well worth it. Usually offers extra credit on exams, but don't depend on that. Exams are all short answeressay questions. Record lectures, study daily, take good notes, go to class, and you'll be fine.
Super intelligent man. So intelligent with the subject matter and personable that you really become entrapped with the course. The delivery of the material fueled my interest in molecular and behavioral neuroscience. Exams are in essay format and there are a plethora of information. He is always willing to help! We continue to be great friends!
I came into this class thining if i did my best and tried very hard id do a good job. This was not the case. I recorded lectures and studied an average of 20 hours for every exam and couldnt pass most of them. I talked to him, asked for help, did my best and it still wasnt good enough. Looks like about 75% of my class is failing this semester also
Easily one of my favorite professors. Dr. Swihart really knows his stuff, and does a good job lecturing thoroughly on the material. His exams are essay format but always include extra credit. He comes across as intimidating at first because he's so smart, but he's actually witty and fun to listen to. If you pay attention you'll get a good grade.
Swihart is an extremely helpful professor. If you make the effort to reach out to him, whether it be through email or meetings, he is very much there for you. He really does want you to succeed. People say the class is hard but his exams are very straightforward and come directly from what he lectures about.
Knows his material and is very good at presenting it in lecture. His exams are all essay format and he's very particular with grading. Highly recommend recording his lectures and re-listening to them before exams to make sure you have the answers word-for-word how he says it. Pay attention, take good notes, study thoroughly, and you'll pass.
I dual enrolled in the neuropsychology course, expecting it to be more rigorous than anything I had previously encountered. Swihart truly expects his students to know their stuff but his tests don't deviate much from the lecture. Most of the extra credit offered is from the text. I would highly recommend this professor and course
Swihart regularly gets a pretty bad rep, but he is actually one of the kindest people you'll ever meet. Yes, his courses are hard, but he is more than willing to tell you exactly what you need to succeed. If you go into office hours and show valiant effort, you will do well. Also, just go talk to him, he's so knowledgeable and just a kind person.
I'm currently enrolled in Swihart's course and it has been one of the most meaningful and engaging classes I have ever taken. He integrates the text, his field experience, and his research so well into the course. I have complete respect for any prof willing to give up their Saturday to call a student to answer questions. Outstanding professor!
Professor Swihart is extremely knowledgeable and educated. However, your only grades for the class result from written exams, and he is a hard grader. Be ready to take very in-depth notes, and write everything because there are no lecture notes. Professor Swihart lectures and you are expected to write everything down that he says for the exams!
I did not know what I was getting into when I signed up for this class, nice guy but the class is extremely difficult. There are only four exams and they are written exams about 5 pages long. On the first day he just started right into the material, never even introduced himself. You never know what will be on the exam anything he discussed or book
Swihart is by far the best professor I've had at SVSU. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who is willing to put in the work for it. His lectures are incredibly interesting, they were the quickest two hours of my day every time we had class. He is very willing to help you understand the material and wants to see students succeed!
You're graded on 4 short answer only exams in the class, so you have to know your stuff. But he doesn't deviate whatsoever from what he covers in class so as long as you study that you'll be fine. Doesn't do PowerPoints or anything and strictly speaks only, so be sure you're prepared to write/type quickly to keep up with his pace of teaching.
Swihart is the best prof I have taken at SVSU yes the class content is hard but he presents it in a fun interesting way The class is 4 tests and an extra credit paper All he wants is for his students to succeed even during the pandemic he is there to help his students gave out his number so students could FT and get a clearer understanding of topic
This professor is egotistical to say the least. He grades not on whether or not you get the answers correct, but on whether or not you agree with him. 0/10 would not recommend. I have never had a bad experience with an SVSU professor until I met Andrew Swihart.
Dr. Swihart expects you to know a lot for his exams, but presents the information in an understandable way. I recommend printing out his diagram handouts (they'll help you memorize the anatomy). For the rest of the info, use Quizlet to study. Overall, I found his class interesting and engaging. Swihart is so nice and is eager to answer questions.
He explained the material in an understandable manner, but the essay questions on his exams require very detailed responses and were difficult. He has us email everything to him instead of uploading things through canvas. He is very strict in his deadlines, but is accessible anytime you need help.
I am currently enrolled in Swiharts class and it is probably one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Swihart is an amazing professor, but the class is lecture heavy, and if you don't come to lectures, you will not pass the exams. Each exam is about 5 pages long, all written with a few extra credit points at the end.
Dr. Swihart is a great professor that expects exceptional work. You will not do good in this class if you don't put in the required effort. His class is strictly lecture based and your grade is determined by exams only. His class is hard but very rewarding. I recommend recording lectures or utilizing the mini lectures he posts to help in your study
Professor Swihart cares about each of his students and wants each one to succeed. He made difficult material easier to understand. I definitely recommend taking his course.
I am happy that I got to have Dr. Swihart during his final semester at SVSU! He was an amazing professor who brought interesting stories from his field to the lectures and provided students with every asset they needed to succeed. Truthfully, this man cared about his students and made himself super accessible. 10/10 professor!
