Hard tests, but he's quite clear. Occasionally dances in class, and says "you can imagine..." more than necessary.
Worst professor. No one knew what was going on in the class, including myself. I was scoring 25% on the exams, and after I dropped the course (using 1 time drop at the end of semester) I got an email saying my 25% was curved up to a C-! The U owes me a refund for that class and if you need to take courses with OChem prereq after this, avoid him!
Andy is a very smart professor. He really knows what he is talking about. His tests are pretty hard, but you can use a full sheet of paper front and back of notes! He adds points to everyone's grade after tests when the averages are low. O-Chem is a hard class, but if you work hard andy is a great prof to have. I am taking O-Chem 2 with him!
He is very clear , businesslike & knows what he is talking about. Plus, you get a huge cheat sheet to write down all the mechanisms and reactions you want...Couldn't be easier.
Tests are way way hard, but you get a cheat sheet, and there is a curve. He is an amazing explainer, and he does a good job of justifying the grades he assigns.
Great teacher, period. He makes himself highly available to students, in the comfortable setting of a Starbucks lounge for office hours! He is extremely clear, and takes the time to drill the most important, useful, and practical concepts into students' minds. His tests are hard, but his philosophy of studying by preparing a "cheat sheet" works.
allows the use of cheat sheets
course is amazingly hard. He only teaches of of power points with occasionally writing on the board. Get a cheat sheet. His exams are very hard to get partial credit on.
This class is really hard. He allows a cheat sheet but it is useless because the tests are so hard. He has never taught O chem II before so there are no old exams to study off of (which is critical in chemistry classes). He curves test by 0-10 pts...not a whole let when the test averages at 45-55.
Professor Taton is a really nice guy and is very available to help. The subject material is pretty tough (it's O-Chem) but the tests were fair and he allowed the use of a cheat sheet, which helped out a lot. The curve is nice, for example, the 50th percentile received a B- so if you do the work, you should have no problem getting a decent grade.
Andy is a great prof. He is really helpful and takes the time to help you achieve your goal grade. His tests are very hard but cheat sheets are nice. His curving was very nice and generous. If you try hard you can't get lower than a B-. Dont take the lab at the same time as lecture. the lab is too time consuming and isnt in sync with the lecture.
He is a helpful guy, but we are no longer allowed to use cheat sheets, the average on the last test was 41%. Tests are incredibly hard even when you feel somewhat comfortable with the material.
Professor Taton is a very unique guy, a lot of fun to listen to in lecture, I recommend you attend class only way to do well...tests are tricky but doable...no cheat sheet anymore, but he does shorten the tests
VERY good professor. I would HIGHLY recommend him.
I was told that this professor is a mediocre one. Since other sections of this course were filled up, I chose his class. However, it turned to be a disaster. He has no clue of how to be a professor. That might be the reason why his tenure was denied by the department for twice. Save your time and money, leave this Professor alone.
He teaches with powerpoint...it is not possible to understand what he is talking about when he barely ever shows examples or models. Plus he adds this really annoying inflection to his voice when lecturing. Don't take him...it'll be a waste of time.
Holds an extra class period "workshop" after class once a week. Gives you problems, work on them in groups and he walks around and helps. Makes material non-threatening. Very clear communicator, organized lectures, slides etc. Very accessible and willing to help. He's very, very good.
Took OChem 1 with him... This class was just not for me. The average on all tests was failing. He does curve it, but that just seems crazy to me to have the average be that low and not change the difficulty of the tests. He seems like a nice guy but this class is so hard you need more than a nice guy teaching you.
He's a nice guy. Very involved in teaching you can tell. His optional workshops on Friday are pretty much a requirement. Because of the nature and depth of the material in organic its going to be hard, but he nicely explains it. BUT, if you are taking O Chem 2 . BEWARE. He does NOT TEACH NOMENCLATURE. All other o chem professors require it.
I disagree with the reviews on here.If you are going to take organic chemistry, please be realistic. It's going to be a difficult(& for most people) an uninteresting subject. He doesn't really like the book, so it is better to understand the material from lecture and his powerpoint slides. Tests are reasonable (curved).Lots of ways to get help.
He teaches some information well. needs work on explaining. do not miss a midter- he had no retakes. tests are hard. study hard and memorize.
Organic Chemistry is not an easy class, but Professor Taton gave great examples, structured lectures, and offered plenty of resources for help (office hours, workshops, practice tests). Highly recommended.
Taton is great! He only teaches what he thinks is interesting and only tests on what he teaches. Go to Friday workshops and actually ask questions and work with other people. Does not teach some things that are helpful later in o chem, such as nomenclature. Test are easy if you do all the book problems, workshops, in class exercises, and go to clas
Amazing teacher, very good at what he does. i found it very good that he did not bore us with nomenclature, very interesting time, go to lecture and go to workshop if u wanna do well
Meanest teacher I've ever had. Literally told me I shouldn't be proud of doing decently on a problem. Almost made me cry in the middle of the student union. Tests were pretty strict to the book, but with a lot of questionable twists. Getting 0/16 on a mechanism was a normal occurence for most of the class I had. Look for C's.
Really makes OChem interesting. Explains the concept, then does an in class exercise, and then re-explains the concept while showing you how to answer the exercise. He also hosts an optional weekly "workshop" where he does more exercises, which is something none of the other OChem professors do.
He is a decent teacher. The material on the tests is somewhat difficult to predict. He is not very nice and tends to react condescendingly to questions.
Worst professor ever. Teaches mainly from a powerpoint, which is useless for organic. Gives impossible synthesis problems on exams. Writes exams for the average to be about 50%. Does not explain stuff very well. His expectations for this class are not clear at all.
I was very satisfied with Taton's style of teaching. For a summer class, especially OCHEM, you really have to be consistent. He occasionally makes jokes to liven the mood, his lectures are very organized, and has a packet of slides for students to follow. Tests are difficult, but if you listen well, do problems, and understand, they aren't too bad.
He is one of the best professors I've ever had! The packet of slides he gave us was helpful in following along and taking notes. His in class exercises and optional workshops are a great help in learning the material. Take his class, he is wonderful!!!
I took the summer class and believe it or not I've actually enjoyed it. Very good professor - organized, gives plenty problems to practice, explanations to them what is very helpful when preparing for exams, clear grading rules. Exams are not too difficult if you do the problems he gives. Just do not skip lectures and you'll be fine.
His lectures are somewhat clear and he gives a powerpoint course packet which is nice, but his tests are EXTREMELY difficult. Even if you do practice problems galore and look at all of the old exams, expect to do poorly on the tests as he puts things on there you have never seen before. Would not recommend.
Extremely clear, helpful and loves to see his students succeed.I would disagree that he does not prepare his students for his tests.Tests are hard if you don't study what he tells you to study, so take his advice on which practice problems to do. Awesome summer course as well! You get what you work for & Taton will do everything he can to help you.
One of the best professors I've had for any class.
Taton is very rude and is often very condescending when you ask questions. He also does not update things on the website when he says he will, which can be infuriating. All that being said, he knows his stuff and is a good enough teacher. His tests are hard, but he is pretty clear about what will be on them.
I have really wanted to like Taton as a professor since he seems like a cool guy, but I just can't. He's horribly unorganized, and his tests are ridiculous. I love OChem, but I dread this class. I have had many occurrences where I've found that I did not receive full credit for answers despite having the same answer as the answer key. Avoid.
Difficult prof/class to have during the summer, would be much more manageable over a full semester. His exams are very difficult, and you spend most of the test time second-guessing yourself, since he's always trying to trick you. He definitely knows his stuff and is decent at teaching it, but his exams are pretty unbearable.
Please avoid him if you could! He assumes you know everything and never elaborates. His style of teaching did not suit me well. I studied so hard for this class and I am still failing. He doesn't provide a study guide, his practice exams are nothing similar to his exams. Bottom 20% of class will receive D's and F's. AVOID HIM!
The optional workshops are helpful every week. Lectures were okay. His test are extremely hard. The averages in the class were about 40%. Tip: memorize the practice tests.
His tests are not as difficult as people are saying. He provides you with several past exams, holds workshops every week, and does many in-class practice problems. Honestly, if you use the resources on the website, show up to class, and read the assigned chapters you'll be just fine...
Hard class but Taton is a pretty good teacher. He cracks jokes almost every lecture which helps you enjoy the class. Yes his exams are pretty difficult but they are what you should expect from OChem at the U of M. Go to workshop and go to class. Make sure to do that and you will survive! Don't believe the negative reviews. They probably failed!
Professor Taton is so approachable and friendly! The guys' office hours are at Starbucks! Come on! He explains things very well in organic chemistry, and is able to joke about his profession. Even though O-chem is not simple, by nature, he makes it really understandable if you attend lecture and offers help outside of the classroom.
Says he's going to do things and doesn't do them. Pretty clear lectures. Tests aren't that bad.
Taton is an excellent Ochem professor. Yes, the class is difficult, it is supposed to be. However, the amount you learn is incredible. He is excellent at clarifying points IN CLASS.
Taton is a pretty cool guy, he even has his office hours at Starbucks! Class is pretty tough especially the exams but he puts previous exams online which are helpful. If you have to take Ochem I would recommend Taton.
This class was HARD. Taton said he'd post powerpoints online ahead of lecture, but never had them up on time. I don't know if I struggled because of the material or if it was how he lectured... But it was difficult. He's a cool guy, though.
Andy is the worst professor I have ever encountered. I did well completely due to my own efforts. I stopped following his slides after exam 2! His method of teaching is very confusing. Waits till one day before exams (incl finals) to let you know the place and time! Horribly disorganized! Even though I scored an A, I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM AT ALL!
Positives: funny, pretty clear in his explanations, quick grader, cares about concepts and not about nomenclature. Negatives: doesn't post overheads in advance, so I ended up copying slides instead of listening and paying attention, which is why I fell behind. Never responded to any of my e-mails, can be rude, grade based on exams only.
He's very nice and I think his lectures are very clear and helpful. Definitely use his practice exams. His website is very helpful. I really like him as an OChem teacher!
Great professor. Clear lectures, follows textbook for the most part, gives practice exams that are exactly like the exams you'll take. Hard to get an A unless you devote tons of time, but very interesting class with a funny and extremely good instructor.
Taton is the worst professor I've ever had. Not only is he condescending and egotistical, he presents the information in a very disorganized and difficult to understand way. He posts lecture slides like 5 minutes before the class starts. His tests are also obnoxious. Take O chem with Fattahi (I had him for 2301)!
Andy was a very clear instructor, doesn't require any nomenclature, but has gnarly exams. Practice exams are exactly like the one you will take. He moves very quickly through material but will answer any questions you may have. Funny and interesting lecturer, but a lot of outside studying will be required if you want to pass.
Lecture is boring, I taught myself everything and went to TA review sessions if I had any questions. Textbook was very well written and organized, make sure to do practice problems he assigns--it's very helpful. Also, get "Organic Chemsitry as 2nd Language" from Amazon, it'll make this class a breeze, you should get an A if you put in some effort.
Avoid, very unorganized. Did not upload key to or return exam 4. No one knew what they were going into the final with.
Very clear lecturer, explains everything thoroughly so that you can understand it. Although must do a large amount of outside work in order to do well on his tests, which is a ton of work if you want to separate yourself and get an A. So very hard grader, but if you put the effort in, it's worth learning from Dr. Taton.
Very unhelpful. Very unclear lectures. Very condescending. Overall bad prof, would not recommend AT ALL. Try to get Fattahi or Wissenger. They are both much better. Taton is the absolute worst ochem professor because his lectures are unclear AND his tests are very difficult. I get that it's a hard class with tough tests, but he was no help.
Really pay attention at lectures, because this is where you get information for his exams, which can be random. Overall great professor! Reading the textbook did not really help me as much as going to his review sessions.
do not take
The structure and expectations of the class are very clear. His lectures are also very clear and helpful. Paying attention and doing the homework will put you in a good place to succeed in his class.
i only show up on exam day and have a B+ but that is because i have had to teach this whole class to myself because when i used to go to his lectures they were pointless. WORST PROF EVER. i have had to put so much time into this class.
I did well in chem one and two but this guy sucks at teaching
Professor Taton knows Organic Chemistry in and out, and this is portrayed when he lectures. He is heavily involved in research, and often times that takes precedence over teaching. Workshops are a MUST. Lectures are a MUST. Tests are hard, but the practice exams provide the format. Interesting class with an interesting professor. Textbook is gold
his lectures do not relate to exams whatsoever! it's nice that he has practice exams or i would be failing. Get ready to teach yourself your first class as i have
Great professor. Start the section with a brief reading of the section and then follow it up with his lecture and you will be set. Homework while not required is a must if you want to hone your skills to the point to pass with a good grade. This is not chem 1 or 2 and requires real effort on the students part.
Andy is awesome! I am so glad i took him even though i don't have the best grade, B-, but i have learned so much. extremely helpful with his office hours at starbucks! he is my favorite professor this semester ;)
Hard class. Curve is really tough. Tests are structured like the practice tests but you actually need to know the concepts. One bad test grade can destroy your grade in the class. Overall, use the book, do LOTS of practice problems, and stay up to date on the readings and you'll do fine. Stay engaged and you'll learn a ton.
Andy is an engaging lecturer; I never felt like I was going to fall asleep in class. Slides are available and helpful. Tests are very difficult, but you do learn the concepts from studying for them. There are TONS of resources available for you--workshops, tutors, daily office hours, etc. Put the time and effort in, and you will do fine.
Haven't got my grade back but I'm sure it's an A. This was the worst professor I have ever had. I had to retake this class after I failed it at a community college, but If I had not had some background this class would have been really hard. My advice is to go to Ian tonks lectures for lectures and just show up for exam day for Taton.
One of the best professors I've had at the U. I found that skimming the chapters before coming to lecture was extremely helpful, and loved his lectures. He teaches you the basics, but time out of class is necessary. This class makes you work but if you put the time in you will be just fine! Hard exams, but predictable.
One of the best Professor at the U. He is very clear during the lecture and he is also very helpful during his office hour. If you study hard from his practice exams and workshops, you will definitely do well in the class
Andy is very organized. I did hundreds of problems in the textbook and printed lecture slides. I wish I would've read before lecture and worked on book problems everyday to improve my grade. First test was the easiest, and then they kept getting harder. We were able to drop our lowest midterm exam score. He delivered some good jokes as well.
aweful
Use practice exams because very similar questions will appear (more helpful than book practice problems); available for office hours every day @ Coffman Starbucks- GO!; drops the lowest of 4 midterms; letter grades assigned by percentile (strictly); allows regrades of tests w formal request; print the lecture slides for notes; no homework
chemistry department sucks at this school, i had to teach myself this whole class because his lectures were useless. he should be teaching intro to chem! if you want to do good with taton expect to put in a minimum of 20+ hoursweek into this course and visit another nearby college for tutoring. i went to macalaster but other actc schools are good2
Super helpful if you need help. Tests are really difficult but always curved
no HW. old tests written by him which will be quite similar to the ones you will take. very good explanation and clearly organized lectures. print out the material before every lecture.
He makes the hardest questions for his exams . Specifically for finals
Professor Taton is very engaging and really wants students to understand the material. He outlines his thought process very clearly so you always know how he arrived at an answer. The tests are very tough- they are meant to assess how much you really know, but if you do everything he suggests to prepare you will be fine.
His lectures are pretty clear but they do not relate to the exams whatsoever! When you see his past exams it will look like stuff you have never seen before! Beware!!!!
If you skip class you will fall behind immediately. His presentation style is engaging and he is one of the best professors I have had at the U. He does not make you learn nomenclature, but he is really big on mechanisms.
Taton is a nice professor who is willing to help you out, but he is also very hard. The the book is irrelevant and the only way to do well is by memorizing previous exams. Not recommended if you have to take more ochem in the future because he skips nomenclature. Test averages are around 60% and extremely hard without relevance to the book.
Andy Taton is an incredible intelligent person, but he will expect a lot out of you. YOU MUST GO TO LECTURE. You so much as check your phone for a minute during lectures, and you'll miss out exam material. Grades are curved, and averages low, but your class is competitive. Study hard, listen carefully, and everything does eventually make sense.
His lectures are super clear and he gives awesome notes, both through powerpoint (which you can print out beforehand if you want) and on-board in-class mechanism drawing. Really stresses knowing how and why reactions work. Make sure you go to the workshop he offers; it's super helpful. Everyone who goes to workshop does well. Read the book too!
what do you expect, it's the U of M who only hires based off of how well they think the professor is at research, not teaching
Andy is extremely intelligent and ochem is obviously known as a tough subject. That being said, he's very approachable and offers students many opportunities to be helped with him outside of class. I met with him outside of office hours and he helped me figure out study habits that worked for me personally. He truly wants students to succeed!
Taton explains things, while they may not be clear, he is willing to explain things. Unlike most teachers he is not afraid to admit he does not know everything on the subject. His test are difficult but fair. He does not like the textbook and it is not important to read it.
His lectures are dense since there's a lot of information to talk aboutpick apart, but when he does he goes through each topic explaining nearly everything quite well. Andy is well-spoken, really knows the material, and is willing to sit down with his students if they're having trouble with how to approach studying for his tests.
With the amount of time Taton puts into this class--holding office hours nearly everyday, having morning workshops, and his willingness to meet one-on-one--getting a good grade in this class is directly proportional to how well you utilize his out of lecture oppurtunities. Taton is all I could ask for from a professor.
He is very available, I would probably recommend. He is nice but extremely hard. I wish the class size was smaller so I could have learned better
RUN NOW! For the love of god do not take Taton! This class will make you ball your eyes out! Seriously, I took him for Orgo 1 and 2 and his exams are extremely difficult to the point of insanity. He is a great lecturer, but exams are not fair compared to other Orgo professors.
Do not listen to anyone on here who has spoken badly about Professor Taton. He is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is extremely helpful and yes his tests are very hard, but do-able if you go to class everyday and keep up with the pace. Best way to study is use flashcards of mechanisms you go over in class and study previous exams!
He is a gold mine. If you listen to every single detail he mentions in the class and learn from the previous exams, you will definitely do well in this class. No need to do homework or read the textbook to get an A. One last thing, he is very hilarious in the class.
Taton is one professor I'll never forget. While he is incredibly intelligent, and it's obvious that he is dedicated to educating his students, he will push you to your limits. He is the most difficult professor I've ever had and not because he doesn't teach you, but because his exams ask little if any of what he shows in class. KNOW CONCEPTS
I thought Dr. Taton was a good prof, but I think it is extremely hard to learn when you have 300 people in your class. I would have learned a lot better if there were less people in the class. Even something simple as desk would be nice, we got a 1 by 1 desk like wtf my stuff dropped so many times each class.
ANDY is a great professor, very nice and passionate and assigns helpful work. If you don't do exactly what he assigns than you won't pass, if you do, you'll get an A
Taton is a very good professor to have for ochem 2! I wish I would have had him for OChem 1. His exams reflect his lectures and past exams, so if you think youre gonna skip lecture a lot and just read the book this is NOT the prof for you. Also your grade in this class is 100% dependent on exams.
spent a lot of time on super basic concepts in lecture and then would throw a test at you with material that I hadn't seen in lecture or in the book. Super nice guy.
Taton knows his stuff and knows how to teach it. The hardest part about this class was that the tests were difficult. He purposefully makes the average b/t 60 and 65. The grading is also curved based on percentile, so the top 20% gets an A, next 30% a B, etc. Taton is very willing to give advice and help out but only when you ask for it.
This is an average professor that teaches a decent class. My main complaint is basically that he is condescending and arrogant towards students, an attitude which is common among the male professors in this dept. Seems very careful to observe college policy in order to get away with rudeness to students. Behavior usually directed toward women.
Andy Taton is one of the most brilliant and intelligent people I have ever seen. Lectures are clear, and the material is clear, but you won't pass unless you go home and practice sample problems. The test don't test what you know, they test what you can DO. Study hard, set aside lots of time for practice! Taton is also fun and helps immensely.
He disagrees with basically everything that the textbook says so despite my not having bought the book I did fine. He also holds weekly workshops where you can do extra non-graded problems that he'll help explain. They helped a lot. However, his exams were the worst thing I've ever experienced in college thus far. But if you study, you'll survive.
So far not really a fan, I don't really like his teaching style. He's not terrible, but definitely not my first choice.
He gives very clear and perfectly paced lectures so you can take full notes without printing slides. He is clearly interested and experienced in Ochem, and has workshops and office hours often. Tests are fair but not easy. Of all my professors, he has been the best at teaching. I only used the book for practice problems, but it's a good textbook.
Do not take this class!!!! I did not listen to my friends' advice and ended up taking his class. Seriously, his exams are amazingly hard and he actually will teach you four more chapters than other professors do. He never replied my email so I don't think he is really helpful after the class.
Teaches you a lot, tests on what isn't clearly taught. Class is very informative and long, but the tests definitely do not reflect the class
This class will weed out the weak. Only the strong survive, so put in work and figure out his formula to get the A. If you signed up, quit complaining and buckle down, lowly pre-med. No one cares about your trivial issues with this guy - find a way to succeed and don't take nonsense from other students. This guy takes no BS - Rating: "good."
