He is a real big michagin fan and loves to make fun of us ohio state fans. He is pretty laid back and trys to make sure everyone gets a good grade in the class. HW is not collected/graded. Quizes every friday. Very easy to get a good grade in and dont have to go to class all the time. Take him!!!!
Andrew is a very laid back guy. He's not the best at explaining things but he's always willing to work with you if you have a problem. Has an off sense of humor. Daily homework is not collected, got an A!
He is really laid back but he is not very clear when he teaches however he is great with office hours. He will sit with you and go over every problem until you understand it. He would not be my first pick but he's not that bad.
I found his class very hard to follow becuase of his rapid pace. He goes through all the work and then at the end when everyone is looking at him with the "deer in the headlights" look he asks what isnt understood by the class. Then he takes another 15 mins trying to explain it and usually just makes things worse. Get a tutor for this class.
Probably the best calc teacher at this university. Calc is meant to be hard and is probably a hard course to teach and Terpsta does a great job. His lectures may be confusing due to the course but he is always available at office hours and any reason for me not doing well in the class if from my own lack of commitment. He wants you to pass
I couldn't ask for a better calc teacher. He made a college calculus course a lot less painful than it could have been. I got a B.
He is really a great man, I am trying to give him a chili pepper :)
He is a great professor and he makes you laugh. He Is the best calc professor at the university.
Great teacher, makes everyone laugh. Has a clear plan for teaching and says everything in a concise, clear manner. Always willing to help in and out of class.
I have a big fear of Calculus and Mr. Terpstra made me love the Calc!! He is soo helpful if you go and get help during office hours. If you do the homework and go to class there rreally is not reason you should do poorly. He is really funny too
Real cool guy. Wants to help you. Halarious. THE MAN
This guy is an absolute baller. He is always willing to help you during office hours if your having trouble. If it werent for this guys help i prob would of dropped calc after the first couple weeks. Take this guy and you WILL NOT regret it. thats a promise
Good teacher, just make sure you do the work.
Mr. Terpstra is awesome. The material is hard, but he makes it as clear as possible. He is the greatest math teacher I have ever had by far. He is funny, friendly, and always willing to help. Take him if you can!!!
He was great! I looked forward to going to class because he made calc as fun as possible. Keep up on the homework even though its not mandatory it'll help tons on his tests.
God awful. Went through stuff way too fast and never went back to explain what he had failed to teach correctly, if at all. I STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST TAKING HIM.
He made calculus WAY less painful than I anticipated. Go to his office hours and it will help immensely. Quizzes every Friday sucked, but you could drop the lowest 3. He made jokes a lot to keep the class entertained. Best Calc 1 professor at Miami!
I took him because of his good ratings, WORST TEACHER EVER. He teaches way too fast, doesn't care if you understand. Talks to the board, sloppy writing. Is only somewhat helpful during office hours. EXTREMELY HARD GRADER. He is so smart he forgets that this can be a challenging subject for people not math oriented. DON'T TAKE.
I heard so many great things about Terpstra that I decided to take his class. He went way too fast and didn't explain things very well such as when to use certain techniques. He is funny at times but can come off as rude and uncaring. His office hours help a little. Unless you have taken a calc class before, I would find another professor!
Funniest dude ever. I thought the class was easy as hell. He does goes fast but I didn't care because it made class seem like it went faster. Uses phrases like "go for the gusto", "badabing badaboom", and many others. Homework is optional but you might understand more if you do it. Answers all questions. Quizzes are easy. Tests aren't very hard.
He flies through calc, but makes it fun with a great sense of humor. He's signature phrase is "Thats word up to the bird up" Just makes class fun.
Flew through the material. Has a great sense of humor and made class enjoyable to go to. HW not mandatory but would help if you did it. Quizzes and Tests arent terrible. Absolutely hilarious: signature phrase: "Thats word up to the bird up"
Andrew is the man!! Class is really enjoyable. The material is pretty difficult as it would be for any calc class but he makes it pretty easy and fun. He's hilarious. We made a BINGO board of all the phrases he says because there are so many good ones including the exact same intro to every class, hilarious. "HOLLA HOLLA HOLLA"
I think he is one of the WORST teachers ive ever had. ever. flies through things. makes things way harder than it needs to be. oh and he isnt funny at all.
Andrew is hilarious! His sayings are the best and keep everyone entertained! My favorite (as someone screams down the hall and everyone looks to the door): "folks, folks, don't worry about it. I don't know what happened but we can take 'em. Maybe with a gun, who knows?" Every day greeting: "Alright, alright alright folks, goodmorning and welcome"
Terp is a tough professor, but in the end, you can pull a decent grade. Attendance isn't mandatory, but definitely suggested. You'll miss a lot if you don't show up. He moves at a very fast pace, and is a funny dude, but if you work hard, you can pull an A or a B. Doing well in this class may lead to few thirsty thursdays because of friday quizzes.
Great teacher, funny as hell and as long as you work hard, show up to class, and do the homework you will be just fine. Whenever you need help he will help you for as long as it takes till you understand. I highly recommend taking him.
Terpstra is the bomb. Really. Everyone else hates their calculus teacher; my class does not. Impossibly clear, very engaging, incredibly approachable. All calculus teachers should aspire to be like Andrew Terpstra.
Terp is awesome. He is a great guy with funny sayings. Easy to understand and will help when you need it. Class isnt mandatory but it sure helps to show up. Kind of annoying with a quiz every friday so no fun on thursday nights. Overall great guy you should def try to get him as your teacher. Alright, Alright, Alright folks Good Morning and Welcome
Terpstra is a really great teacher! He makes things easier to understand and is very helpful when explaining how to do problems, and he's very funny and friendly. Always says things like "word up to the bird up" hilarious. I wish he taught calculus 2.
HILARIOUS! no need for a calculator, everything can be done by hand. very engaging and approachable. i loved calc class, not so much the work every once in a while, but he made class fun. bc calc is 5days a week you def need to go bc he assigns hwk and has quizzes every friday but if you do the work and ASK Q's you should be fine. def take terpstra
Excellent professor and funny too. The class is 4 days a week, so you might think you could skip. DON'T DO IT. It's very easy to fall behind in this class, even if you miss one day. If you do miss a class, however, make sure you talk to him and he will get you caught up. He's very approachable and makes class fun. Highly recommended.
Absolutely great guy, but the class is ridiculously hard. Even after going to his office hours, I still struggled. Quizzes are every week, and the exams are very difficult. Homework takes 1-2 hours each day and only worth 8% of final grade. I'm not bad at math, but this class was too much. Took it again with a different teacher and got an A
Tough class, prior calc experience needed to do well
If you want to do well in this class, a background in Calc is a must. However, he is one of the most approachable professors I've ever had. Going to office hours is easy and very helpful. Even if you can't make his hours, he will find a time to meet with you. You will be studying everyday, but it will pay off. Unfortunately he doesn't curve tests.
HE IS NOT FUNNY. Thinks he's the funniest guy in the world. You think you know the math and when you get to the test the problems are 1000x more difficult. Any other calc teacher will give you an easier test. Must admit he explains things well but, his tests will WRECK YOU.
Took calc in high school and got an A with no problems. Dropped his class after the 3rd week. He teaches way too fast, only likes problems solved his way, a super picky grader, and makes you feel stupid for asking a question. His average for his calc classes is a 2.0 if you look on the Miami grade distribution site. Do not take.
He definitely teaches extremely fast, so if you havent had Calc before, then avoid him. If you have, he is a great choice to have. He goes in depth with the math and explains it well. He always wants to know if anyone has questions because he wants class participation and not just to lecture. If youve had calc before, his tests arent that bad.
This is a hard class. Terpstra really loves math, but he overcomplicates everything. I found it easier to teach myself the material from Webassign. His tests are impossible!
super easy class, i already knew calc though. never went to class and never studied
this professor's exam is not easy to pass
He is a great professor and has a lot of interest in calc. He does a great job teaching, but his tests were extremely hard.
Took Calc in high school, breezed through this course. He works quickly but gives lots of examples and he's always willing to help if you need it. Doesn't think about what he says sometimes before he says it, but probably one of best professors for Calc from what I've heard from other students.
I didn't take calc in high school, took this class and barely passed. He teaches fast and his jokes suck. Homework takes forever. Take calc beforehand or avoid this guy
This professor will screw your GPA. Do not take him. He absolutely wrecks you on the tests; it's like he gets off on giving bad grades.
Really awesome guy. I thought he was hysterical which kept class interesting even though the subject is boring. He definitely makes you work for your grades, but is always willing to help in office hours.
I took AP Calc in high school and got an A, took calc first semester and got a D, retook calc with Terpstra and got a B. Most sections of 151 will screw your GPA. Goofy guy with an enjoyable sense of humor. Moves at a good pace, but make sure you stay on top of the material. Relentless WebAssigns (typical of 151), weekly quizzes, 5-ish exams.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken. If you want to significantly lower your GPA I would recommend Andrew Terpstra. I took AP Calculus in high school and averaged around a B-. The Class isn't that hard if you have a calculus back round but if you don't, Terpstra will wreck you. He FAIlED 11 students in my class. His average gpa was a 1.71.
Mr. Terpstra is absolutely hilarious. Calc 1 is a hard class no matter who your professor is, but he was more than willing to help you if you needed it. He really recommends office hours. His classes were fast-paced and could get very confusing as he isn't very clear most of the time. He's an extremely fair grader though.
Great guy. Some say he is tough but he is fair. Calc is a hard class and he does a good job of presenting the material. Really does a great job of teaching if you put in the effort to do the homework, be active in class, and study for exams. Exams are no trick, just learn the material presented in class
Awesome teacher. Good looking too. Very smart and always willing to help. Calculus is hard but he teaches it so that you can understand it. ALWAYS DO THE REVIEWS BEFORE TESTS!!!! They take long, but are so worth it to do. Tests are worth A LOT of your grade, so keep that in mind, because theyre not easy. Overall, good class and terpstra is the best
The lectures were long, but I felt very rushed. He solves everything on the board very quickly and it is sometimes hard to keep up. Sometimes homework was assigned for topics we had barely covered in class, so I spent a lot of time looking it up from other resources. He likes to tell jokes and is excited about math, but I was super confused.
This guy is the worst professor I've ever encountered in my time at Miami. Gives horrible lectures that don't help much with the homework assigned and the quizzes he gives. He does give you a review for exams, but the questions are ones that can't be solved from what was learned in lectures. Had to teach myself the content of the course to pass.
Terpstra is amazing. Some people hate his class because Calculus sucks in general, but this man is the bomb. He always wants to make sure everyone understands, and his tests are extremely fair. He is also hilarious.. probably the funniest teacher I've ever had. never curves or gives extra credit unfortunately
When I first had Terpstra I did not like him. But as the year has continued I have grown to really like him. He is absolutely hilarious and keeps class fun. He also is very clear about what he is working on and encourages questions. He learned everyone's name by the second day and remembered small details about them.. his handwriting sucks though
At first he comes off as boring, but I've learned to love Terpstra. He knows everyone's names, even in a class of over 100 people. Sometimes goes fast, but he is a good teacher.
He teaches extremely fast, and does not take time to review or explain how or why he did something. Does not believe in curve. Gives two or more days for homework assignments from when was taught in class. Always willing to answer questions. Funny guy, makes it entertaining. Exams are impossible, most classes averages a C or D
The class wasn't very interesting but terpstra made it really fun because he is an odd guy. The information was fairly straightforward and the recitation sessions on TR made it easy to learn.
Terpstra is a nice guy who clearly knows quite a bit about the material but he is tough. He lays it out on the first day of class, this class is mostly test and quiz grades and he loves to challenge students on the test problems. He does not curve whatsoever but he gives out some extra credit with attendance. I relied heavily on my GA to do well.
MTH104 isn't his usual class (precalc), but he does teach it occasionally. So since he's usually a calc teacher, he goes SUPER fast through the material. He's so funny and always invites questions. The nice part is that he's super helpful in office hours and the TA's during recitation periods were amazing. He randomly take attendance for a grade
He's a nice guy and he was always willing to help explain a concept that anyone didn't understand. He doesn't take attendance but he does have some random assignments that you could miss if you don't show up, plus calculus is hard to learn without going to class. Overall, he's a good guy who wants to see his students succeed.
very nice and hilarious, good lectures.
If you have never taken calc before DO NOT take it with him. Nice and funny guy but very tough grader
I would never recommend Terpstra's class to anyone. He may be funny but this does not make up for all the other areas where he falls short. He is hard to get a hold of via email (or maybe he just ignores mine), he is a very tough grader, he does not believe in extra credit or curving grades, you basically have to learn everything on your own.
The worst math teacher I have ever had throughout my years of going to school. Very lecture heavy, works ahead of all the students, and doesnt give you the chance to understand the material before moving on to the next topic. Asked him to change me to a different small group because the one I was in was terrible, and he dismissed me. Dont rec.
Calc is a very hard class in general and especially at Miami. Highly recommend taking it somewhere else as this class felt impossible most of the time. I hated the way he taught at first and warmed up to him only slightly. Tries to be funny and crack jokes while teaching but is was just confusing
Calc at Miami is notoriously difficult. With that in mind, I thought he did an okay job given the circumstances of this semester. I'd be lying if I said his class wasn't painful but if you go to every office hours and truly put in 110% you can survive. He's also extremely caring and understanding the more you try. Take every opportunity!
Dr. Terpstra was exactly the professor I would want for Calc I. His teaching style worked really well for me, but I know some other students didn't like him as much. He moves pretty fast through the material, but always clearify if you have questions. If you have an SI group go to that as well and do as many practice problems as you can.
MTH 151 is notoriously difficult course at Miami but professor Terpstra didn't help make it any easier. I took the class online and he struggled to teach the course online at a high level. Terpstra definitely cares about his job and cares about his students. Mid terms and the final are worth most of your grade in this course.
If you can get out of taking this class with this professor, I would. I had friends in the same class with different professors that had to teach me so I could even pass this class. By far the worst teacher I have had and constantly distracted. I am hoping he is a better in person professor because his online course left an entire class failing
I took this in the summer and I would not recommend that unless math is your thing. I was happy to just pass. After all the breakdowns, long nights, and tears I was happy to be done with the class. I did really like professor Terpstra, but it was a struggle!
I would not recommend taking him unless you are a genius at math and don't need to be taught. Terpstra works incredibly ahead of his students and I found my self just copying the lecture notes down quickly not able to process anything. The exams are almost impossible. I put in hours of studying into this class just to get disappointed each time.
Very understandable lectures. Will answer any questions. Tests are fair. Beware of business majors reviews since they seem to hate calculus.
Tough class, but with Terpstra you can do well. Gives good notes, and if you prepare for the exams you will do well.
Professor Terpstra is a fine teacher, though he does move at a pace thats quite fast for a class like Calc I. Attendance isn't mandatory but you'll definitely need to attend if you want to keep up, he doesn't consistently post notes online if you miss class. About par for the course for what you'd expect out of a Calc I teacher.
You HAVE to show up to class to know whats happening. He explains things pretty well but sometimes cant break things down to be simpler. He often gives extra credit to boost everyones grade. Also a really funny guy.
I had Terpstra for 2 semesters. While I have heard other professors are much easier, he is great at explaining things and he has a good sense of humor, which keeps class from being boring. His quizzes can be hard, and I find the exam questions to usually be easier than the quiz ones. Just do your homework and don't skip class, you'll get lost fast.
This class was difficult but Professor Terpstra was great. I was able to reach out to him via email and during office hours and it was extremely helpful. He is always willing to answer questions, stay after class to help, and answer your email. He knows the content is difficult but will help you in any way possible to help you succeed.
assigns Homework that is so hard he doesn't expect you to complete it even though it is for a grade. The T.A. is unable to complete some of the homework problems.
He wants you to do the homework. doesn't believe in late homework.
He teaches at a very fast pace and doesn't always explain what he's doing. If you miss class, you'll probably be lost. He gives out weekly quizzes and his quiz/exam problems are overly complicated compared to the examples from class. He's definitely a character, so at least his class is somewhat entertaining.
Terpstra is a really good dude. He's funny and you can tell he is passionate about teaching. He is always willing to help and is super approachable. However, he teaches calc like it is rocket science. The examples in the notes are childsplay compared to his quizzes. Put so many hours out of class studying, but still feel lost.
I see people saying the quizzes are harder than the notes in class. I don't get that. The notes and homework have a lot of problems on them, some are easy but some are hard. The quizzes and tests are similar, but the hardest problems on the quizzes are like examples in class and no where near as hard as the hardest homework problems.
Great professor that is funny and engaging during class. Homework is often tough and time consuming but can help your grade. Friendly and helpful during office hours and good at explaining concepts during class. Highly recommend taking Calculus I (MTH 151) with him if you can.
If you want to fail your math class, take Terpsra. He barely teaches in class and the supplemental lectures are almost useless. I had to get tutoring for his class and over half that are taking him are failing.
Terpstra explains things well in class. Will help if you ask questions. Quiz and test questions are based on the homework.
He's a funny guy and he's pretty easy to talk to, but I feel like he could be a better professor. I'm currently struggling quite a bit in his class. He moves through the material too quickly and sometimes doesn't do a good job explaining things. He gives weekly quizzes and sometimes the problems will be way more complicated than class examples.
Great person, but not the best of professors.
Awesome professor. Just do the homework, and the quizzes will be fine.
hes really funny but you cant read his handwriting when he does example problems and he does not use slides so if you cant read his handwriting, youre on your own. I took precalc a few years ago in highschool and how he taught precalc was much worse and made it more confusing than in highschool. Overall average professor.
Loved Terpstra's class, I thought it was a clear cut course with easy expectations. All work given is very managable and quizzes and tests are pretty easy. This class leaves no room for slacking as it is fast paced and lecture heavy. However, Terstra is a great and helpful teacher who will make it easy for you if you put in the work.
overall, Terpstra was a character and kept lectures engaging. very accessible outside class and seemed to actually care about the students doing well. very understanding and accommodating guy. lectures were heavy and fast-paced so its important to stay on top of your work.
Great professor. Gives a lot of examples. Goes fast but if you ask questions he will explain anything. Quiz and test problems are just like examples in class and homework. Not the easiest but fair.
Andrew Terpstra is an excellent professor, who is caring and understanding. He is humble, polite, and respects students. If given the change, you should certainly capitalize the opportunity.
LOVVEEE he's so funny fav professor
Professor Terpstra is an amazing person and very funny. Classes are lecture heavy so try not to miss them and if you do make sure to get the notes from someone. Quizzes and Exams are based of the hw so as long as you do that you should be fine.
If you are not ready to do problems until the end of class, do not take Terpstra's classes! In addition, Terpstra grades very harshly on problems that often have many points attached to them, and does not explain why. His weighting is massively unbalanced, and quizzes are worth an out of proportion amount while hw is weighted practically nothing.
Terpstra grades very harshly and doesn't explain his grading when marking quizzes or exams. He prints out the notes pages and hands them out in class and never has them uploaded online so it's impossible to prepare for the content or catch up if you miss a day. Also, the homework has much harder questions than the notes.
Overall he was a great professor and he explained things very well. He posts the homework early which is nice and his lectures are very easy to follow and understand. He's a very understanding guy who really wants his students to do well.
Clearly very passionate about math, super funny and nice guy. But notes are paper only so if you miss a class, it's hard to make up. Teaches EXTREMELY fast and doesn't explain much. Homework is harder than lecture problems and tests are even harder than homework. No curves or extra credit either.
Ignore any good reviews you see listed if you're not a math major. Terpstra is a harsh grader who doesn't explain what you do wrong on exams or quizzes. I went to his office hours, si sessions, had a tutor, and studied for hours only to fail every exam because he'll give you a 3/18 even if you are on the 'right path'. Take this with someone else
I really liked this class. Terpstra explained things well and would answer any questions. He is also pretty funny in class. There is a lot of homework, but there is time to do it. If you understand it, the exams are not bad at all.
Best teacher ever
Terpstra Does Not Care About His Students At All, He'd Rather Joke Around Or Claim His Students Are Lazy When His Lectures Drag And His Lectures Give Easy Questions, Homework Give Hard Questions, And Exams/Quizzes Have Extremely Hard Questions.
i took this class as a sprint course, which i DO NOT recommend you do unless you absolutely have to. but I'm really glad he was my teacher, he is very accessible outside class, will answer any/all of your questions, and always tries to help you understand. I wish all math teachers were like him. Nice guy
I took this class as a sprint course, which I DO NOT recommend you do unless you have to. It is a hard class, no matter who teaches it. But I am very glad he was my professor, he was always available to answer any/all questions and really cared about you understanding the material. I wish all math teachers were like him. Nice guy
The class was challenging but the professor was very helpful. He cared about students understanding the material and was always available to answer questions. unstuck study was a great study aid.
Lectures go fast but explanations are clear. Test questions are a like the notes. Lots of homework but plenty of time to them.
I can tell he has a gigantic passion for math. But personally, he just taught things in an extremely weird way that I could not understand. My friend who was in the same course, just a different teacher, was not learning it the same way as us, and it was so easy to understand how she was doing it.
He wasn't a bad person, just really bad at explaining things in a clear way. Calc 2 is hard by itself but he'd go through examples and not really explain how he got to the answers at times. He seems like he'd be a really chill guy, though, if he wasn't teaching me calculus 2.
His teaching style wasn't good he writes all over the board its really hard to follow along he doesn't explain how he gets those answers. Everyone else that was taking calc this semester all got a big curve for each exam and got to have a notecard on their exams. He's a nice guy however I wouldn't take his class again.
Go to class and pay attention. Don't be on your phone. It's fast paced but he does explain everything and will answer any questions. Nice guy and fair.
Better hope you can learn mathematics completely on your own. This guy rambles to himself quietly as he talks to the board. Doesn't explain.... or really teach anything. Seems like a pretty alright guy but as a teacher, he needs to be evaluated. He writes all over the board and does the math in his head and throws out numbers.
I'm not done with this class yet but he is so nice I go to all his office hours and the SI sessions and he truly helps me so much and gives a lot of partial credit. I struggle with Calculus a lot and this is my third time taking it but I got so lucky with this professor and I cannot recommend him enough!
This dude just talks to himself and writes on the board. Decent dude but dont take his class if you want to learn.
