Smart, Needs to teach like we dont know it. very high above us.
Can't explain things at all. Assumes the students know everything already. DON'T TAKE HIM!
Most of what 103 covers I had in high school and I did well on it in high school, but Tierman has completely screwed me over!! Avoid him at all costs!!
Tierman is a really spaced out freak who knows everything there is to know about math so he expects his students to also. He is really technical about the answers you give him. I would not recommend him to anyone.
Absolutley worthless. Needs to be removed or fired. A disgrace to SVSU's math program. Totally Sucks.
This guy is terrible. He loses the class by teaching 5 diff ways to do a prob. and then expects every1 to understand each 1. is very smart but does not know how to TEACH. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
not helpful, needs to learn how to teach and explain things from the students point. However, I got a good grade out of his class, but I wouldn't recommend it.
This guys should not be teaching. He should be in some cubicle in the back of some lab working on his insane problems that he constantly scratches on little pieces of paper. NOT A PEOPLE PERSON. Try to avoid taking a class from Tierman.
Very hard to follow. He's a smart person but just doesn't know how to teach the material.
This teacher is the type of teacher that is highly intelligent, but is just unaware of how to teach that information to his studnets. I got a B in the class, but didn't learn anything, other than how to pretend to know statistics.
confusing
Does not explain things well and don't ask him for help because you come out more confused. He also picks difficult and confusing books. He expects everyone to catch on to his "teaching" Would not take him again
I'm really wish I had dropped this class when I had the chance. He explains a problem and when he finishes looks at and ERASES IT!!! He then realizes he missed a step or something. It is extremely confusing to follow what he is saying. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
I ended up teaching myself more than i learned from tierman, he knows his ****, but he can't teach worth a damn. He is also very boring and mundane. Dont take him, but if you have to take it at a time when your not gonna be tired. but seriously dont!
honestly, the worst professor i have ever had. i hardly ever go to class because i honestly believe i can learn it better just by reading the book. if you can avoid it, do not take his class. the tests are impossible.
You need a 18 to place in this class-I had a 24,4 yrs hs math,26 on act & grad #1,but still felt stupid when i was in his class. I dropped the class after two days,b/c had to keep my head in the book trying to teach myself.Got into 103 to relearn. AVOID!
most stupid teacher ever. gave us take home tests which i took to the math tutor in the library to do, very naive. and a HORRIBLE teacher
Explained concepts fairly clearly. His take home tests were EXACTLY what was covered. Made himself more available than most of my other teachers have (email, home phone, office hours, after class). All questions I had, he answered politely
never went to his class got an A. he is small and kinda quite. not very enthusiastic in his teaching. don't email him, he doesn't respond, ever! do some of the homework and take notes and you will do awesome.
horrible
he is a very conufused professor, i end up teaching him in some eqautions.
DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF. HE IS THE MOST CONFUSING TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. HE'S SO CONFUSING, HE CONFUSES HIMSELF. THE CLASS IS A DIFFICULT CLASS AND HE ONLY MAKES THINGS WORSE. IF YOU WANT A PROF THAT I CAN ONLY DESCRIBE IN ONE WORD (MENTAL) TAKE HIM!
He is really confusing. Students find themselves teaching each other during class because he can't figure out the best way to explain problems. He spends to much time going over some sections. He is alway never mentally there in class.
Confused is the best word.As much as he tried he got us more confused than we were before. If you dont understand anything, please dont ask it will be worse. The best thing are the open book tests.-Get simple A's here
Oh my gosh, it's so confusing...I was bad at math before, this seriously made it worse. I learned more from the students in the class while he was teaching...Not good
if you had any statistics before, you will have an edge and wont be as confused as other students. he is very smart, but can't teach his intelligence to students. the only way to pass the class is to teach yourself or get help from other students that understand the material.
Terrible teacher. The worst I've ever had. He confuses himself.
He is a very smart man that has trouble explaining his knowledge. He has the best of intentions but tends to confuse.Very nice guy and always willing ti help. Tests are open book, so an A is not hard.Only thing is, If you have no prior atatistical experience, you might have to do some self-teaching.
VERY intelligent and VERY kind!Tries REALLY hard.Make the trip to his office, it'll pay off, he REALLY tries. Can be confusing, but his examples are extremely helpful.Notes make a HUGE difference. Open note/open book exams - what more can you ask for???
I would not recommend taking him. Nice guy, but can't teach. Over 25% of my class dropped out. I can't hate him, because it seems like he has good intentions. In Psych. I learned a little about some people that are so smart at a subject that they cannot naturally break down material to be simple enough for others to learn easily. This is him.
Tierman is pretty cool, ya stats is kind of boring stuff but he uses lots of examples to help you understand. If you ask him a question durring a quiz or on homework, he will alaways help you. Good guy!
I didn't understand algebra before this and I still don't! Tierman is a nice guy and clearly knows his stuff, but he's not good at explaining it to students. I feel bad for rating him poorly because he really tried. Most of my class was just totally confused. He graded kindly at the end, and passed many people who should've failed, including me.
Ater taking his Algebra course I became very confident in the subject area. His teaching technique and the books used for the class helped me to score very high on the MTTC math portion.
Good class, helpful prof. Open book/note exams. You have to be a complete idiot to have not gotten atleast a B- in this class!
He really sucks.
Someone needs to have mercy on this man and give him some instruction in teaching. He's so sweet, yet needs so much help.
This is a real sweet teacher who wont fail you. He is just is so much of a genius that for the first two weeks I was dazed in class...his exams are open book, open notes and so you are bound to pass even though you dont really understand him most of the time...
He is the worst teacher EVER! Half the class dropped out and the half that is still there is barely passing...well 50% of the half that left. He practically told the class that we were all going to fail. He explains 4 different ways to do a problem and gives pop quizes all the time. And gives you a quiz after an exam as well.
Content was easy, but he made it more confusing than it was. Reading the book it all made sense, but he didn't go in order so that made it hard. The good news is that everything is open book & open note so there's no way that you can do bad IF YOU GO TO CLASS. He spells the problems out in the notes. I got over 100% and didn't have to study.
Umm.....If you are not very good at math, I recommend you stay FAR, FAR away.....He will help if you ask, but his lectures are all over the place and he uses difficult terms to understand.
He is a nice man, but his teaching style seems to be uncompatible with EVERYONE! He makes everything more complex than it needs to be. He hates that his students got to the resource center, but it will definately help!! Don't be afraid to tell him you are completely lost during class, most likely everyone will thank you after class for it.
Explains Math
This was horrible. I did not learn anything with this professor. He makes his lectures too complex, especially when writing the exampleson the board. You will need to go to the resource center for this class. I have talked to him and it didnt seem to help. I wish I would have checked this site sooner.
Uggg... this was awful. The class isn't easy in general, but he made things much more difficult than they needed to be. Just show up and take notes... write down everything he writes down and put it in your notes. Don't be afraid to ask him to slow down... he goes really fast at times.
Although he is a very nice person, Andrew Tierman is possible the most boring teacher ever in the world. If you have a low attention span, and hate math, this is not the teacher for you!!!
Awful. He never explains how he gets answers, he just assumes you know it all and understand all of the steps he went through. He goes through problems way too fast. Sure, he knows how to solve the problems, but you won't after class is over. Everyone else in the class was as lost as I was. If your not a math genius and have to take him, good luck.
Here's a great hint: spring course..7 weeks, 2x/week, tough but manageble. Yes he is hard to understand. Read the BOOK. He wants everyone to pass. He will work w/you if you work w/him. It was not easy, I got an A. He does partial credits on problems. Hard to connect w/him at times, yes, but do-able.
horrible !! stay away!!!!! worst teacher ever
Not an easy class. However, he does try to help you as much as he can. Gives partial credit. Very nice man. Lectures are super boring and a lot of what he says isn't clear. The class is manageable though.
Mumbles, strays from topic. Very nice person, just a poor teacher. You can tell he understands the work perfectly but cannot express it to the class. Turns would-be easy material into hours of grueling pain. Not a hard grader though. Allows open notes and partners if you ask.
He's a nice enough guy,but it doesn't make up for his teaching. His lectures made 2 hr feel like 5.He never seemed to have a plan when discussing the chapters,he would just skim through and jump right into random problems before really explaining things first and tried doing problems in the most difficult way and end up confusing himself and us
One of the kindest teachers you will ever meet. He really cares if you as an individual do well. His lectures are very unclear and sporadic so just read the book. Test are easy if you know the material. If you ask for take-home test and open notes he usually allows it. Also he gives out extra credit many times throughout the course.
He was the only prof who was teaching this course this semester. Worst instructor I have had in my 5 years of college. Goes off on tangents about things that don't really apply to what he should be teaching. Reading the book doesn't help either because he likes to do things his own way. I feel awful for anyone who has to take this class w/him
This was the worst teacher I have ever had. He kept changing his mind on the syllabus and never really understood how his point system worked. Final Exam was suppose to be an hour and fifty minutes... some people took up to 5 hours. He didn't understand his teaching techniques were terrable.
Very nice guy, usually starts to care about the class more once you've taken the first test. Tests are rather lengthy and that can be challenging but he lets you stay late to work on them and usually lets you have notecards, almost everything has a curve on it. Lectures tend to be boring but just bring work from another class and you'll be fine
TERRIBLE PROFESSOR. The class is easy enough, you take 10 quizzes and 3 tests plus a final. He is terrible at lecturing...repeats himself over and over and can only explain things one way. Often makes mistakes and doesn't catch them, take a different prof!!
Nice guy, but terrible terrible professor. You can tell he understands the material in his own mind, but his attempts to teach the material at a level anyone else can understand fail miserably. Avoid if you can.
He really is a great guy and will spend a lot of time trying to explain things to you if you need it. The problem is it just doesn't always make sense. I really think he is just way to smart to be teaching a 100 level class at svsu. He is a very intelligent man but that isn't always what you want in a teacher, you want someone that can relate.
really nice guy, just not the best at teaching. hard to relate to him. he does give open book quizzes and the final is not too hard
Very nice man, but not very good at relating to students. He honestly cares if you pass or fail, but make sure you go to class. Write down everything he writes on the board, because you can use your notes on quizzes and he usually does problems that will be on the quiz. I would suggest him over many of the other math teachers at SVSU.
Awful professor. Can't understand anything he says because he mumbles everything. He knows what he's doing but doesn't know how to teach. Do not recommend whatsoever.
He's a nice guy who actually cares about how you're doing in his class and will work with you, but he's often confusing and his handwriting can be very difficult to read. The final was very difficult but the quizzes not so much and I finished the class with an A.
Way too smart to be a teacher. Very helpful, really knows his stuff which can intimidate students at times because he's not the best at explaining. If you lay close attention and take notes he's great. His jokes are great, too.
This was the worst class I've had so far. He is not that bad of a guy, he just does not teach well. I try and I study but it does not help. If you want to pass you defiantly need to attend every class. He is pretty goofy at times just laugh and he will be happy.
I thought his biostatistics class was pretty good. your grade is based mostly on quizzes and you can use your notes and book on all of them. he gives out handouts that show exactly how to do everything. i dont know how someone could do bad in his class.
Dr. Tierman is very knowledgeable but can't teach. However, all of the tests and quizzes were open book/open note, and as long as you write down what he puts on the board, you will be able to do fine.
This is class is easy if you attend class. You will have a quiz about every day but they are open book and open note and are aloud to help each other. He will also help you during the quizzes if you have questions. So basically if you're in class you should do fine. Also, final exam is cumulative. You can get 23 wrong and still get 100% on the exam
Scattered but he's always open to help you. Cases if you pass or fail. Very caring.
This guy is very smart and nice to his students, but man does he suck at teaching. Very unorganized and makes problems seem even more confusing than they actually are. Tells you he will make study guides, but never does. If the syllabus tells you an exam is a certain date then dont expect to have it then, because he wont create the exam on time.
This is the first time I have ever given negative feedback to a professor. He is very brilliant, but doesn't know how to teach. I did well in the class, but that's because I taught myself the material. He is very confusing. Take another professor or class if you can!
He is a very caring teacher. He is genuinely concerned about how students are doing in his class. Plus his subtly, nerdy jokes are great. :) However, he cannot teach. He is too smart for his own good and cannot relay his knowledge to his students. All tests/quizzes are open book/notes/friend so that makes getting a better grade easier.
Although a nice guy, he has to be the worst teacher I've had in my 7 yrs at SVSU. A. Tierman proves that SVSU does not read student feedback forms as he would NOT be teaching if they did. HORRIBLE and confusing. Only reason I passed was because I pushed pride aside and kissed some major toosh. Again, worst teacher at SVSU.
Dr. Tierman is very smart, but does not belong in the classroom teaching a freshman level course. He is very scatter-minded and unorganized when it comes to grading, creating exams and homework. If you ask questions, he tries to answer them but doesn't know how to word anything, which makes it hard to concentrate and get a good grade.
Dr. Tierman is very intelligent, but has a real difficulty in sharing his knowledge in an easy-to-understand fashion. If you are a strong math student, this class should be an easy A, as everything is open note with a lot of extra credit opportunities. If math is not your strong suit, his disorganization will make this course quite difficult.
This professor is knowledgeable in his field, however he has a hard time articulating to the class. He is disorganized and it's hard to read his writing when trying to take notes. His tests are hard but he has a lot of extra credit on it. Times when I should of had C's or D's on tests, I got B's and up because of all of the extra credit.
Disorganized. Gets really mad when students ask questions. Gets really mad when students don't understand things immediately.
Very intelligent man. Terrible professor. I'm a junior and he is one of the worst I've ever had. Beyond disorganized. Goes around the answers to questions. Has you learn mathmatical software on your own. Hard assignments and quizzes. Even tutors couldn't always help. Tests were almost impossible to complete. Do not take him if you have the choice!
Tierman is very smart, but is not good at teaching. He is extremely unclear and hard to follow. He is horrible at answering student's questions. However, he does offer a lot of extra credit on his tests. I would not suggest taking his class if you have other options.
If you take this class, the tutoring center is your savior. Go there if you want to pass.
I feel like one needs to be determined to get a good grade at all costs to take this professor. You HAVE to jump through his hoops because you sure as heck aren't going to learn much. Very confusing instructor. I earned an A, somehow.
Mr. Teirman is an extremely intelligent man . However, he does not know how to share his information with others. He is very confusing and strays off topic frequently. Each quiz and exam was open note, open book, and he let us talk with other students. I passed the class with an A because of that, but did not truly learn the material.
This teacher is not bad at all. I've had a lot of bad professors this is not one. Nice guy and class is more than fair. Wish more teachers where like that. You learn not memorize. You also won't fee like pulling your hair out. You should feel lucky to have this Professor he tries to give you every opportunity.
SO MANY QUIZZES!! That bein said the only test is the final, and it's only worth 15% of the grade. The class is easy enough if you put forth effort.
He is definitely not the easiest professor to take. His lectures are very long! However, he gives a lot of extra credit on the exams and allows cheat sheets as well. You can basically write the entire homework on a cheat sheet and you'll get 100+ on the exams.
Lectures are very long and boring. He lacks organization skills but is willing to do anything for his students to help them pass. You may use 8.5x11 in paper on all tests as a cheap sheet and use all cheat sheets on final. Offers 30 extra credit points on all exams (very helpful). Never miss a class unless you want to teach yourself the lesson.
If you skip, your going to fail. I missed one class and it was a downfall from there. He doesn't explain things good at all and makes it very confusing. He tries to help but it stills confuses you. Lots and lots of quizzes. You pretty much have one every Thursday. The only thing that helps you pass is that the tests are open book or take home.
Professor is hard to understand. His written notes in class are impossible to read. His teaching examples often directly contradict the textbook, and are often unneccisarily complicated.
Be prepared to sit in a class where you are scared the entire semester that you are going to fail. You will learn absolutely NOTHING the entire semester. He is so unclear in his teaching, and he makes zero sense. Good luck deciphering his handwriting. The only reason you will pass is because all quizzes are open note and open textbook..
This is by far one of the weirdest classes I've ever taken. I did not learn a single thing the entire semester, yet received an A in the class. Prepare to receive hundreds of handouts that you may as well throw away. Just bring your book to class and ask him for help when you need it. Most quizzes and the final exam are done in groups. Just weird.
Terrible professor. impossible to relate to him and his "notes" he posts online are impossible to read. Lectures are very boring and it is almost impossible to distinguish between things needed for the class and his MANY MANY tangents.
He mumbles making him hard to understand. The class was very frustrating and hard to grasp. Textbook was never used. I would recommend a different prof if math is not your strong suit however, he can easily be persuaded into giving group quizzes. He will always allows use of notes and the textbook on them. Curves the final tremendously.
The entire class period as he's trying to teach you, he pauses to try and figure out the problem and back tracks a lot. He's very unorganized, mumbles a lot, and jumps around so much you can't follow along. He also hand writes all the notes and Its nearly impossible to read. All quizzes are open note which is nice but would not take him again.
Dr. Tierman is very intelligent and a good professor. There are 10 quizzes that are typically open note/group quizzes. Many students unfortunately slack off in this course, but if you actually listen to him and take notes, the material makes sense and he is a good teacher. He also care about students. I recommend him.
Unless you are willing to teach yourself or spend hours outside of class to understand material I would not recommend.
I would never take Tierman again. He gets off topic a lot and is hard to follow. If you have a question, good luck getting an answer. If you want a professor that will actually teach you this topic, DO NOT TAKE HIM.
I went in to this class worried because of the reviews he had. I took bio statistic with him. I ended up getting an A and he was one of my favorite professors. He is very funny but he does sometimes get off topic but is fair and knows we won't know everything he does. He will go around and help in exams but he is just very caring I would recommend.
Worst professor Ive ever had. Is not respectful when you ask a question. Has a hard time staying on topic. Lets you use notes on exams, but they make no since and you dont learn anything in class so its pointless. Not helpful in office hours. Good luck getting a straight answer out of him. Has no rubric for exam grades. Takes forever to grade.
Professor Tierman is a kind professor and I could tell that he cares about his students. He is not a good professor though. During his lectures he would get confused and forget what he was saying. To pass the class, try and pay attention because some things he says is helpful and do your own practice problems out of the book.
He is well known here for being someone that you will get an A with but you will not learn much. The lectures are very disorganized as well as the class. It is an easy class, and if you teach yourself from the book you can get an A. Many group quizzes for a lot of points. The lowest test was dropped, exam was open book/notes.
Biostats is going to be challenging no matter what professor you have. Overall, prof Tierman is a good teacher, just needs to understand that we don't know everything he does. One quiz every week, about half are group, and we get to take quite a few home. Need to take good notes in class because all quizzes are open note. Will meet out out of class
He's not the best but not the worst as well. I have had worse Math professor. He genuinely cares for his students and respects everyone and tries to explain clearly but that doesn't go well. He gives weekly quizzes and group projects. If you attend the class and take good notes then it's easy to get an A as the tests are open book open notes.
Went on tangents a lot; found it difficult to pay attention because he switched topics so much. Although, he was very smart.
This professor expected us to know math almost to his level. He would often skip over things, assuming that we already knew them. He does not explain things clearly and is all over the place during lectures. I ended up having to teach myself a majority of the material. He does let you use notes on all exams, the only reason I passed.
Tierman knows math, he does not know how to teach math to students. He was the most unorganized and flustered professor I have ever had. He would be teaching something basic then go off on these tangents of intense math problems that were way higher than the course level then erase all his work and say never mind. Grading was unclear and not posted
Dr. Tierman is passionate about math and wants his students to succeed, but he is disorganized and does not convey the material well. Especially if you struggle with math, this class will be even more challenging because the content is not explained very well.
The majority of SVSUs math professors are far from good, and Tierman is one of them. The first day he walked into class and immediately started a problem without any context behind it. This is how the whole semester was. He started class at least 5 minutes before it was supposed to. His grading nor teaching made any sense but somehow I passed.
I took him for Math120b, he is very unorganized and hard to follow. If you take this class you will have to study alot and teach yourself. If you are not a math person I would not recomend taking him. Some of his exams are so long and impossible to finish in the time given. The only good thing is he gives extra credit on exams. He isnt a teacher
Tierman in my opinion is a great professor, just show up to class and take ALL notes to pass. He lets you have one page front and back cheat sheet for the exams. STUDY THE QUIZZES for the exam to help!
Kind of goes all over the place in his lectures and is hard to follow at some points. Expects you to already know things that go along with what he's teaching and goes off talking about other things before saying "but we don't need that". LOTS of extra credit on tests and is very lenient in grading.
He seemed like a caring professor that was easy to get in contact with for one on one help if needed. My class was all online and there were many hours of lectures for each week that I would watch speed up. Practice quizzes with answer sheets made it easy to do good on all of the quizzes.
