This class has been insanely helpful in regards to learning about production. Twibell's enthusiasm makes it so much fun on top of that. You'll learn a lot and you'll have fun. This professor is fantastic!
The guy definitely knows his stuff. And he is extremely clear about what he expects from the students. I definitely got a lot of valuable insight to cinematography and the overall production process. Good guy too. Easy to talk to. A lot of hands on learning.
He's pretty great for everything except that he docks points for things he doesn't actually explain.
Participation is key. As long as you show up for class and do the homework like you're supposed to, and act like you care, then you'll receive an "A."
Andrew Twibell is my favorite professor in college by far. Not only did he make the class immensely interesting, but has fun traditions he likes to incorporate. Very understanding and would definitely take this class again. He's constantly available, keeping up with his email, and is laid-back. Great instructor, definitely recommend
He is by far one of the most influential teachers I've had. He is incredible and has sparked my passion for media production. His dry sense of humor is perfect and is super clear on assignments. He leaves so much room for creativity and really encourages incorporating and finding your personal style. I'll be taking my third class w him next spring.
One of the best professors in the MJF dept. and probably all of MSU. Super smart guy and very humble. He is so funny, there is a group text among the class literally just quoting him. He will do everything he can to help you succeed, I can't wait until I get to take one of his classes again.
He really cares about his students and is very approachable. LOVED HIM
Wasn't very accessible in or outside of class, pretty much avoided any questions I had.
Unclear grading criteria.
Snooze fest... Bring a pillow for sleeping and then bring another pillow for the first pillow to sleep on.
Just talks about himself most of the class period and vague on why he takes off points on assignments
Easily my favorite professor this semester and I cannot wait to take more classes with him. Made the lab fun and really cared about what he was teaching and is a really great advisor as well.
Thinks hes an avant-garde film critic. We never used the 200 dollar textbook either.
He teaches the lecture part of this class and then we have a lab with a different professor. Not the most exciting person I've ever met. Doesn't give feedback or explain why he takes points off of assignments in class which is really frustrating. He is nice but like I said pretty forgettable .
Not accessible outside of at all, in fact he would become irritated when I came by during his office hours
Very critical and controlling of your group and individual projects, comes off as condescending frequently
hes is a five star man
Very monotone, semi-knowledgeable about film production but incredibly vague on why he deducts points on assignments. Avoid.
So-so class, bad teacher
low-key pretentious and incredibly unclear on why he takes points off of assignments.
Powerpoints are super long but available online, take a different professor if you can though.
Meh, the PowerPoints are available online. Hes very particular in how he wants your movie directed. He will mention during critiques that its not how he would have done it.
I can't say I really learned anything from this class... Instead of actually explaining how to do something he will just do it for you which I guess is cool but it didn't really teach me anything.
Easily my worst professor this semester and I cannot wait to finish this class. Made the lab miserable and didn't care about what he was teaching and is a really bad advisor as well.
I thought it was really fun!
Definitely a good time! take this class
My third class with him, very good!
Team Twibell!
Twibell is so funny! 007s haha
Unexciting lectures and very high expectations for students, lots of criticism.
Group projects are fun but he splits up groups each week
You don't get graded by many assignments so it's important to come to class each day. He doesn't explain why he takes points off of assignments.
Not recommended. Glad this is my last class with him.
More miss than hit: he comes in late a lot and doesn't explain why he subtracts points from assignments. Not incredibly exciting either.
Overly long lectures and under explains assignments
None of the tags on this site properly describe Twibell. Add "unclear grading criteria", "inaccessible outside of class", "demotivational", and "self-important lectures" and then you have the makings for a class with Andrew Twibell.
Morale in this class is usually low, probably has sometime to do with the class system... Some lucky students get to cruise through this class, the rest get eye rolls, sarcasm, and indifference.
Lecture heavy, get ready to read.
Pretty meh professor
Below average: Wouldn't explain why he took points off homework and just explains the answer and not what you did wrong if you ask him. Pretty monotone in his lecturing and not very funny.
The epitome of a know-it-all film buff: watching films you've probably haven't heard and going out of their way to avoid the mainstream. Takes a long time to respond to emails and doesn't post assignments on blackboard. Not recommended.
He is so unclear about what he wants. He actually told us what he wanted for a project presentation, then counted us off when we presented saying he didn't tell us any of those things. He has no idea who you are even if you want to think he does. He could care less about you. He is the only teacher for this class.
It was a tough class, he expected all of us to be on like a spielberg level of filmaking. The group projects were confusing and he doesn't email back.
We didn't get to even touch the gear until two months into the class, Twibell is the kind of Professor who is constantly standing behind your shoulder critiquing you. Take this class with someone else.
such a great professor and SOOOOO funny lol!!!! take this guy for reals
We spent 5 weeks talking about theory we already learned before we got to use the equipment. I dont know, guys... Maybe take him if you enjoy not feeling joy?
I learned a little in this class. We (kind of) get to make the short we want, going through the motions was helpful (script, auditions, shot list, crew, etc.) Twibell, on the otherhand can be brutal: most of the students this was our first short, he would take great pride in pointing out every flaw in out short without suggesting how to improve it.
Honestly I thought professor Twibell was incredibly helpful. He made me realize I needed to change majors so I do not have to work with people like him.
Once you actually start using the equipment the class gets a little better. Twibell's lectures can be uninteresting and a little stale but he seemed like he knew what he was talking about. Personally I was afraid to ask questions in this class because it felt like I would be humiliated.
We got the opportunity to watch some cool movies and I learned a lot about the foundation of filming.
I enjoyed the lab in this class, Twibell is competent, learned in this class..
He is awesome!
Awesome!
He really knows what hes talking about!!!!!
Would cancel class out of the blue with no plan for making up missed material. We never used the 200 dollar textbook on any assignments or tests.
made us buy a $180 book and never tested us on any of the chapters.
when you have a question on your film he just does the thing for you without giving you any knowledge or insight into how to actually solve the problem on your own. replies to emails with the most smug white-collar responses as possible (thanks for reaching out to me!)
i thought he was very rude in that offhand kind of way and only helpful when he wanted to be. i would not take this professor again.
Over complicates lectures taking a long time to get to the point, it took forever before we got to actually start doing the lab assignments
Professor twibell is smart but will say things about your project that are rude but he will say it like its no big deal. I dont know the word for it its like backhanded compliments but its still different what he does.
The hard to impress yet is in no way impressive himself type of professor, he will over-analyze your short to the point of absolute pettiness. Would also say he never told us to make certain changes in our film even though he did. Never used the textbook I bought at the beginning of the semester.
If I could have I would have rated this professor a 2.5/5. he is okay but doesnt explain why he marks points from homework and can be a very dry speaker.
not an effective teacher, trys too hard to be a film critic instead of a professor. our lab instructor pretty much had to pick up all the dead weight from his lectures.
Not a lots of chances to earn points in this class, pretty tough grader, replys to your email maybe 2 out of 10 times.
Goes on and on in lectures about finding your own voice in filmmaking encouraging you to be creative, yet when you get his notes back on your work he will tell you it's not what he would have done. Okay?
Okay. I went to class everyday and talked during discussions but still didn't get all the points for participation. Still I learned a lot about media production.
Harder than 365, professor Twibell is helpful but his analysis on your short reviews can be a lot to take in. Learned a lot.
greatest of all time!
Good!
Took this class a while ago, he was really boring and quite conceited but he could be helpful.
ive taken most of his classes and i would say professor twibell puts the most energy into this one. his meetings or whatever you want to call them during your production werent very helpful, its like he would say alot but at the same time not really saying anything.
nit-picks when it comes to critiquing your project but sometimes it kind of helps
An highly accomplished writer, director, editor, cinematographer, producer and filmmaker. I learned so much in one semester I could probably direct the next Avengers movie now!!!
He's a real Gene Siskel, you know, he knows what he is talking about!
pretty arrogant but knowledgeable about film
A true visionary!!! Hes actually comes off as charming when he tries to make an effort!
I thought this class was okay even though everyone else seemed to hate it
truly an hero to all the visioniary directers out there!!! loved him!
The G.O.A.T!
such a merry old man!
there goes my hero!!!!!!!
Professor Twibell's class gave me the courage to realize it's okay to be different, no longer am I afraid to be who I am in public. Truly inspireationalial!
R-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-really cool!
Lectures are scattered, he will go from lecturing on a subject to real life "examples" that have little to do with the lecture. He is slow at grading work to hand back to use for studying for tests, offering no explanation why he subtracted points if he did. Will just send you a copy of the syllabus if you email him with a question.
Too much homework without a consistent schedule for it. incredibly boring in class, never stays on topic and doesn't clearly explain information. buying the textbook was a waste of money. this lecture portion of this class would be easier and save so much time if you took it online.
Andrew Twibell is an enigma: the man, the mystery, the legend himself is a multi talented writer, director, cinematographer, and editor. In my own life and career as a filmmaker, I too have the aspierations to do many of these things.
this class has potential
Insipreational!
you know its ok to be different, we all have our accidents. hey, ive had my fair share, but most of them were stress induced, thank you Andrew Twibell for helping me overcome my insecurities. I wear them everywhere I go now.
Not very accessible outside of class, can be condescending.
Two words: BORING. I did learn that there were 72 tiles on the ceiling in this class tho
Knowledgeable but disrespectful, often ignored or pretended to not hear me. We never used the textbook he claimed we were required to purchase for class.
For a class that emphasizes how to make a viral video, professor twibell didn't seem to understand what going viral or a viral video was...
I've never had a professor that I have believed in so little than this guy
has trouble showing up to class on time.
this was an highly educational class, i learned so much about my self from this class ;)
andrew twibell is a awesome college he teached me some cool stuff about film.
very monotone and super serious, you can't ever tell if he is pleased with you or the opposite, no sense of humor, gives off the impression he is judging you, has no personality, assigns to much homework
He knows his stuff but he loves comparing apples to oranges, as in he compares you to other students he has had instead of focusing on what can make you as an individual better. When he does critique you, they are very long winded but never really giving any solid advice. Not recommended.
the lectures are okay but his powerpoints suck for taking notes, the tests are reasonable but sometimes assignment due dates were unclear, the lecture vs lab lvl of communication could be improved
I never understood his movie references when we were making our short film, it was a lot of artsy italian and french films, he would use these as examples for our films. I was too embarrassed to ask him what he was talking about. Take this class if you enjoy being around snooty film nerds.
The disconnect from the lecture and the lab is too extreme. Professor Twibell's feedback on your work never explains how you messed up, it's either "okay" or "not what I am looking for"
I thought he was too conceited and the book (which he never asked us to use) didn't help when studying for his tests. Considering it was a basic media design class he graded pretty tough on the script you have to write.
The class itself was good opportunity to get a short film under my belt. Twibell, however, was useless. He didn't lift a finger to help OR to teach. It was a self taught course. That was basically the experience I had with him throughout my entire four years there. He knows his stuff technically, but he has no imagination...
The grading is too inconsistent in this class, some due dates were unclear with some shorter assignments being worth many points while some longer assignments worth hardly anything. Professor Twibell's comments on your work are not always the clearest, sometimes he doesn't explain at all.
I don't understand Andrew Twibell's approach to teaching, he likes to separate all the media majors for projects in this class, there is also virtually ZERO communication between the lab instructors and Twibell, very disorganized class, could be vastly improved.
As someone who already understands filming techniques and cameras, I have to say this class is designed poorly for new students to learn how to film. Core principles will be glossed over and then not mentioned again for weeks, the lab portion of this class has professors who do not know how what you have been taught, the examples are ineffective.
I thought professor Twibell had very high expectations for this class, this class was less being taught, and more being critiqued. His critiques are okay, but he doesn't show you what you need to do to improve your shorts.
extremely slow grader and takes days to respond to emails
This is a supposed to be a beginner class, but in the lab they don't help you at all and expect someone in your group will "know what they are doing," Andrew Twibell himself is unhelpful at best and kind of rude honestly.
andrew twibell he okay man guy. would consider taking again,
He's whatever but he takes for freaking ever to grade your assignments or reply via email. Pretty much ghosts you.
Super passive agro professor, will "lose" assignments of yours if you get on his bad side or assignment much lower grades than your peers for doing the same or even more work on your group projects.
he pretty cool instructer eh
super bland, somewhat knowledgeable but he does this thing where he will over explain something breaking it down into simpler and simpler explanations to the point of just being straight up condescending. not very accessible outside of the class room (let alone inside...)
I could have taught this class... "professor" Twibell was generally unorganized and not enthusiastic about what he was teaching. He would constantly ask if we already covered topics... Take with someone else.
What an amazing professor Andrew Twibell is! I think it's incredible of him to try and make his classes exclusive as possible and only use the same three actors and crew for every production. What an inspirational professor he truly is!
Andrew Twibell is an hero, if not, he should be!
Theres a lot of reading in this class but its not from the textbook, in fact we never once needed the textbook for this class so dont waste your money. professor twibell comes off as soft spoken but he is very condescending and egotistical once you get to know him.
hes okay
Kind of comes off as a know-it-all, hard to get hold of outside of class (not very responsive)
One of the most inconsistent graders i have ever taken, knowledgeable albeit very critical without being constructive.
he is pretty cool guy eh
I thought professor twibell was nitpicky when it came to critiques considering this class is really a beginner class. The grading was tough and the improvements needed to be made on assignments seemed infinite.
Twibell may know a thing or two about videography but his style of teaching is ineffective and patronizing, he also has unrealistic expectations for the quality of work in this class.
This class is split into a lecture and a lab, Twibell teachers the lecture, there is a severe lack of communication between the lab instructors and the lecture so it's always hard to stay up to date in this class, other labs got through labs faster than ours.
While he may be a bit of a film buff, he is useless as a professor, his lectures are scattered brained and he doesn't take the time to teach us what we need to do in the lab, I also didn't know what my grade was all semester because he doesn't upload it to blackboard. I wouldn't take him again because his classes are confusing.
The way this class is split into two parts is terrible, the lectures are often irrelevant to the lab and the lab is a good chunk of your grade. Much more difficult than it needs to be.
I think the problem with Andrew Twibell's classes is that he is a bad explainer, not only is this bad for learning, but it is also bad when it comes to getting graded on what we have "learned" he also comes off as stern and gives very short one-worded answers so you are pretty much on your own to interpret assignments.
I didn't understand the point of this class, it really felt like a filler class, twibell's lectures would go off topic too much, then we try and make a viral video without being taught how to use a camera. I took nothing away from this class. waste of time.
im really at a loss of words trying to say something positive about this professor
THIS CLASS IS CONFUSING! The tests and labs have nothing to do with the lecture and no one ever knows whats going on
Ok except he is very vague on what you did wrong on homework.
The group projects are doable, it's the critiques that are tough.
Do not bother buying the reading materials for this class, the bar seems pretty high for a class of this entry level, even though we are trying to make viral videos, try and make them cinematic. Hope that helps!
He is kind of a tryhard when it comes to film history, and this translate to his grading.
Tough at grading and the final is worth most the grade.
I thought he could be more clear on grading but he is okay
The tests arent too hard but the lab work is unbalanced.
average prof
Problem with this class is that it's supposed to be an intro course but we need some knowledge of more advanced skills to do well in it. Lectures covered only a few basics, time management is bad in this class.
hes fun too talk about movies with but hes not the best at teaching
Okay except for the way homework is divided throughout sections and how it was graded, I had to manually keep track of my grade and assignment mistakes wouldn't have more than a check mark as an explanation.
This class taught me a few things but it's very disorganized
VERY SLOW AND HARSH GRADER!! I took this class last semester and by the end of it my grade was still only updated from the first month of class, 90% of my work was ungraded until way after the semester, and I received literally one word of feedback on my homework the entire year.
Andrew Twibell is such a woke professor, i feel so #blessed to be a part of his classes, he keeps it lit fam!
I wanted to like this class, I read every review last semester before signing up. This class is as hard as everyone says. Professor Twibell is as unclear as everyone says. There is no group communication like everyone says. Grades are sent out slower then snail mail like everyone says. I should have listened.
Twibell is knowledgeable but doesn't apply it to teaching, uses too many buzzwords to sound up-to-date, instead sounds tacky
My guy Twibell is quite a character, I learned thing in class about the human condition, whoa
This guy just get's "it" he is so woke for a professor!
even though the entire rest of the class failed i managed to get an A somehow
Super normie professor and hes not very creative but he likes to talk about films, he is quite the movie critic.
As a person he is kind of fun to talk about movies with but as a professor he is disorganized and unresponsive, in the end just 'meh'.
Very tough grader, even tougher at critiques, do EVERYTHING he tells you to do and you'll be lucky to get a C.
Professor Twibell SEEMS to knows his stuff but he can be very rude at times, made me want to reconsider filmmaking.
Not suggested professor, couldn't wait for this semester to be over.
If you can, AVOID HIM!!! Strict grader, rude, unhelpful! I withdrew and changed my major, act now before it's too late!!
Hardest thing I've ever done, tough grader and doesn't give you enough time to make revisions for your projects.
I mean hes not the worst professor, but he's up there.
Mr Twibell seems like a nice enough guy, that being said he is a horrible teacher and I have no idea how he got hired, grades take months to be posted, the criteria for assignments seems to change every day, and the lectures are scattered.
I left this class feeling even more confused about media then when I started and for a media professor, or someone who should be familiar with technology, he sure seems to take a loonnnng time to grade assignments!
There is way to much homework in this class that is just busywork and irrelevant to the class, professor twibell is not recommended, he knows a lot about movies but can be pretty mean.
It is not too terrible of a class, final i worth most of the grade so be careful of that.
Twibell is less there to teach you, and more to critique you in this class, has a very strong opinion on what is good and what is not.
I thought this class could do a much better job of being organized, so much confusion and so little communication for projects and between instructors.
I took this class and MED365 with Twibell, avoid at all costs...! I would agree that Twibell understands film theory well but his methods of teaching were not very encouraging and there was no sense of you improving as a student in this class.
Not a lot of guidance in this class on how to progress through it but I would take it again.
This is the worst professor I have ever had, and this is coming from an honor's student. Lectures were extraordinarily boring and he couldn't be bothered explaining mistakes you made on assignments. I wouldn't take a class from him if my life depended on it.
I didn't think professor Twibell was terrible. I do agree that the correspondence between the lecture he teaches and the lab instructors was very poor, even when reaching out to the instructors.
Im sure hes a good film maker but he treats this class like it is the only one you are taking this semester, he expects a lot from you, more then you can accomplish in a semester.
not a very enjoyable filmmaking experience, expects students to have a similar taste in movies and will judge your abilities based on what movies you like, he only sees things the way he wants to see it. Not accessible outside of class.
Takes a long time to respond to emails. Kind of awkward but very stern at the same time.
The amount of work required to get the bare minimum of a C grade in this class is ridiculous, it also didn't feel like that rewarding of a class considering our end product was still rushed. Probably the most time consuming class I have taken thus far.
Going to take this class with another professor when I can, Professor Twibell is literally the worst professor I have taken.
he seemed okay at the time, but now that I am in the industry I would say avoid this professor. He's kind of bland but sometimes he will complain about students to others, he gets uncomfortable if your work enjoys more success than any of his, and he bluffs on what to actually expect in the industry like he's some kind of expert.
Just got around to checking my grades for this class... hes kind of a tough grader despite giving off the impression you are doing well in his class.
He doesn't know what's going on between his lectures and the lab you take in this class, comes off as disinterested when you ask for help on assignments, not a very exciting professor.
Honestly, justice for T-Dog, he was great. His expectations were clear, and when he was finished teaching he gave us time to work on our projects, letting us leave when we want. Also, he's pretty funny if you let him. You get full credit just by doing what he asks in the assignments, even if it's not done by the turn-in day. Just show up to class.
Justice for Andrew! He's a bit socially awkward but not a bad teacher. I enjoyed his class.
