By far the best professor I have had. He's very funny & his lectures are so interesting & eye-opening. No exams but many writing assignments (which I enjoyed). 2 group projects which are a lot, but fun & beneficial (coming from a person who hates group projects). Read 2 books but they are actually good. Open mind needed, but I highly recommend 3113
Assignments often weren't graded for over a month and were graded on "uniqueness" on the idea presented, with little feedback. We were often penalized on having an opinion that someone else held, which is often in a class of 130 students. Lectures were interesting and enjoyable, but assignments are less than fair in the way they are graded.
Professor Urich was the worst professor I have had at OSU. The class is set up to be easy. There are lecture videos and then a writing assignment each week. The problem is the TA's grade very harsh. Professor Urich has horrible people skills for a person who teaches about people skills. Definite taker if you ask me.
Urich is an amazing professor who seeks to challenge traditional ways of thinking. He will say outlandish things in hopes of helping you keep an open mind. He teaches real life skills and is caring if you take the time to get to know him.
You either love this guy or you hate him. He is very opinionated, and if you can't handle that by "keeping your garage door open" then you won't like him. The lectures are interesting, entertaining, and informative, but the workload can be a LOT, especially if you're not a fan or writing. The group projects are a little ridiculous as well.
Urich has never lacked enthusiasm. He taught me how to have people skills that would allow me to be successful in my career. The workload was very heavy, we had a paper or reading assignment quiz due each week. He taught me so much about how to be personable, professional, and achieve the things I want to achieve. I highly recommend this class!
Mr. Urich's class is by far my favorite class that I have ever taken, the lectures never fail to entertain, and while some of the work may be uncomfortable, they help develop essential skills for life.
His TAs have admitted that they grade only by word count. It should say something that half of his colleagues openly say that they don't like him. Why would they have him teaching interpersonal skills if he can't use them himself? All of his lectures are just debates, which somehow teach you "people skills." Lazily made class.
You'll either love him or hate him. Personally, wasn't a fan. Lots of reading, you'll read a couple of novels during the class. The work just felt repetitive and annoying. Didn't feel like I really gained much from the class at all. Urich is a weird dude.
He is far left even though it shouldn't matter. He states that he is single in almost every class period (Like why?). He makes fun of Christianity by creating his own religion and skewing the Bible. Again why are you bringing politics and religion into a classroom? Not sure why he's teaching personal skills when he's had 4 divorces.
Urich is horrendous. Every video the prof posts are almost 5 years old and rambles about his life. Gives bad grades on assignments with zero feedback. The whole course is opinion based and he gives poor grades on writing assignments. Many students have tried to contact him for feedback and received rude messages regarding their writing abilities.
I think Urich is a good teacher, but his assignments are just way too hard for the class. Be prepared to write a lot in this class. Pretty sure the TAs grade on word count and not on the quality of writing, which makes no sense based on his ideology of the class.
I took the 8-week version of this course. Every week you have a written assignment and a quiz due. You HAVE to read the book/watch the videos to do well on the quiz. I was not a fan of the written assignments. I never got feedback for how to do better on them, but I never cared enough to ask. You can easily get a B in the course.
I took his BADM 3113 course online and it was by far one of the best courses I have ever taken. It is an insightful and useful class, that helped me gain new perspectives and tools for becoming successful in life. If you want to take a course that will actually be useful throughout your entire life, I would take this course with Urich.
This class is very easy if you suck up to the professor and agree with everything he says. I can confirm this because my grades on written papers improved once I started agreeing with him and not writing about my own thoughts. Take this class if you never learned basic empathy skills or never been to therapy. I learned nothing.
this is a philosophy course with English on the side but stuck in the business school. 10 papers worth at least 60 points - and you can't have an opinion that goes against Urich or you will get a bad grade. the only parts that had to do with interpersonal communications were two videos in unit 5 that he did not record. do not take him
I had to write far more papers for this class than any of my level 4000 English classes. Agree with what he says and you'll do well. He makes fun of Christians and people who didn't go to college, so be prepared for that. You won't learn anything important in this class, so prepare to be bored.
Urich is very full of himself and overly confident in how groundbreaking his lectures actually are. Be prepared for many writing assignments full of subjective questions, where you cannot disagree with him without getting points off. If you have any semblance of self-awareness this class will be very redundant and boring. Please avoid this class!
This class absolutely made me want to question my sanity. First off Urich is incredibly cynical and would preach about how he wanted us to open our minds but yet it seems like he did not care what other students had to say. I have never seen someone speak with such ignorance over many topics and continue to preach how his mindset was superior.
His lectures give good food for thought. He has some interesting life lessons and stories to be learned from, however, there is a lengthy writing assignment every two weeks. The TA's grade very harshly and he even prefaced at the beginning of the class that it is nearly impossible to get a 100 on the assignments, so why even hand them out???
Great professor with a lot of life experience, but as others have mentioned workload is incredibly heavy. More intensive writing than any other course in the BSBA Marketing degree program. You'll either love or hate his approach to lecturing. He has good intentions but he wants to challenge you, so be prepared for that.
Assignments were crazy hard - 10 written assignments, and 6 quizzes over two books. Lectures were engaging, but nothing I hadn't heard before. Makes bold statements that obviously show he's from New York, and I don't think he respects the culture of Oklahoma, and he's not fond of Southerners.
you will receive random grades on your writing assignments with no feedback or reasoning for it. there are TEN papers throughout the semester, each one more vague than the next. you also have to read 2 books and take quizzes over the most bizarre and unimportant questions. they're every other week and cover over 100 pages each. he thinks he is god
He says in his writing rubric that you have to have a completely original paper and it has to be different and more thought out than the other 600 students in the class. It is completely unfair to the students because not everyone has original experiences. He doesn't even grade anything he just yells, complains, and throws bean bags.
Prepare to do lots of busywork that makes up most of your grade, that Professor Urich claims will help you in the Game of Life (it won't). Your 7 (extremely lengthy and difficult) papers will make up the majority of your grade, and the TAs grade them by how much they like them, not by a rubric, and offer no feedback at all. Urich has a God Complex.
Give's incredibly entertaining lectures, seems to truly care about his students success, pushes what you're comfortable with and wants to help you open your mind to the real world whilst having fun with it
If you have to take this class with Urich, take it online. His online course is relatively easy, it just consists of 8 (long) papers. Grading is very inconsistent though. I have reached out to TA's to try and get feed back and have not received any.
Reviews are always bipolar, so I'll present the middle. He has good lessons in class that are very applicable. However, he thinks that he's the only one to think like this so he thinks he's god. Papers are fine if you put work into them since they require listening in class and self-reflection. Overall good lessons but personality is bad
Extremely arrogant. He thinks his course is groundbreaking, it's not. You can learn more from touching grass and thinking for 30 minutes. His papers are so long because they are so repetitive, he asks the same question 10 different ways and expects 10 different answers. Grading is all over and don't expect feedback. 0 stars, did not enjoy, at all.
Papers are fine but there is a vocal minority that think grades are unfair. Good content for most students to atleast consider. Biggest drawback is personality. If he softened up his delivery, 50% of negative reviews would be gone. Have an open mind, realize that noone is out to get you and think for yourself.
Classwork seems like a lot initially, but really not bad. He has a lot of writing assignments. He really makes you think. Learned a lot about life in his class. He has quizzes about books you read in class too. Read the books and watch his videos, you won't be able to shortcut. May seem obnoxious, but he means well and cares about his students.
ATTENTION! I would strongly recommend that you get prepared. You have to take this class. Just so you know, it's required. No other professors teaches this course. Grading is absolutely HORRID. There are Papers on Papers. I'm an A+ student, and I have taken extremely hard classes, but this class made me go to therapy.
I absolutely loved Urich's class! It's very paper heavy, primarily graded by TAs which there were some issues with grading at the beginning of the semester but Urich fixed that very quickly. It's a no BS class, as long as you do the work, read the assignments instructed you will be fine. He's a very caring instructor so don't be scared to reach out
He genuinenly cares about students. I have taken all the classes with him, he is a teacher that will actually make you learn something. There are no tests, there are paper's, but they are pretty much all your opinion. He wants you to succeed. He is the best!!
In all honesty, this man has been one of my favorite professors. He doesn't sugarcoat, and he doesn't have very clear grading guidelines imo, BUT he does know what he's talking about and he may seem like he doesn't care, but it's BECAUSE he cares so much about it, that he acts this way during lectures. Be prepared to read a couple of books, though!
Urich's class is challenging but rewarding. The workload is heavy, but the content is valuable. Embrace the self-reflection - it may seem obnoxious, but it really helps you grow. Unstuck study was a game-changer for prepping the long papers. Overall, worth the effort.
The people that don't give him a good review are just being sensitive. This class is so easy if you pay attention to his lectures, he keeps you so engaged. I have taken all of his classes and passed with a high A each time. He is the BEST
He challenges you to keep your "garage door open" while also being the arrogant professor I've had. He grades nothing and your grade is completely in the hands of the TA's. I suggest going to the Writing center the first couple assignments to survive his class. Fair warning, he will tell you about his own religion and his bias on Christianity.
You will either adore Urich or you won't be able to stand him. There is no in between. He is extremely blunt, but so entertaining. I loved him. This course will change your life if you're ready to do a ton of mental legwork getting honest with yourself. Keep an open mind and I promise this class will impact you forever!
Since this class is required, be prepared for frustration. Grading is left to TAs who give little feedback and seem inconsistent. The professor claims to encourage open-minded discussion but pushes his own views. Expect long, repetitive papers with no clear grading standard. Use the Writing Center to improve your chances of a decent grade.
Inconsistent grading, incredibly vague writing rubric.
Be prepared for this professor to hop on his high horse and be there the entire semester. You are forced to either agree with his propaganda or fail because you didn't suck up to him in the 1 of 8 essays you'll write throughout the semester. And don't even bother asking TAs for writing feedback they just nickel and dime your paper.
He's simply always right and you're simply always wrong.
Urich can use inflammatory remarks and statements, but he does it with the goal of making you challenge your current ideas, hopefully teaching you to open up to new ones. He doesn't care if you believe him, but he does want you to think. It's not hard to get good grades on the writing assignments, but they do require a lot of effort.
Enroll at your own risk....
Professor Urich's class includes three required books (Outliers, The Defining Decade, The Subtle Art...) with one-attempt quizzes on each. Audiobooks help if you're a slow reader. Expect a 5-page paper every other week. Heavy reading and writing load. Not recommended if seeking a light or easy course. Great class still. Very interesting!
Essays (which are your main grade) are in question-response format, so there is not much choice and freedom to be creative. If you are not creative, you lose points with vague feedback of "needing to think deeper". For the first essay of the semester, not one student, of a very large class, made above an 80%, as the TA's are the essay graders.
You have a writing assignments every two weeks, its really not a bad class just go into it willing to learn.
His entire class is based on arguing about his PERSONAL opinions. I go to class to learn not to hear someone man-splain their opinion about spiderman, weed, alcohol, religion, and political views. I understand what he was trying to do but everything he said ended up coming across extremely arrogant, out of touch, and narcissistic.
Get ready to listen to him yap all class. The point of his class is for you to think and maybe even challenge your beliefs. Good class if you want to be forced to think. Bad class if you're spoiled and entitled. Essays due almost every 2-3 weeks so get ready to write.
