The class was okay, lectures were interesting - but the workload was tough. We had weekly discussion posts, a project, a 5-page paper, and the midterm and final. The TAs did the grading, and they have strict guidelines. Lectures are good if you can follow along with what he's saying while reading the slides.
Dr. Walgren's course changed my dislike of history. The course is arranged thematically, emphasizing concepts over memorization. Walgren also seems to deeply care about his history. I noticed him tearing up when talking about tough topics, and I found myself often moved by what we learned. It's a lot of work, though. Grading depends on your TA.
Walgren is an amazing history professor. He loves what he teaches is caring towards students. The work consists of weekly discussion posts, but you get 3 dropped at end of semester which is nice. There is also a midterm, final, paper, and AV project. So far all have been graded fairly and I've received A's, but at times the class can be stressful.
He was nice, but there are only a few grades in the grade book. Grading was a bit harsh in my opinion.
Lectures all class every class. Discussion post every week. One test. One project. One analytical essay. Overall light workload if you dont get a good TA it could be bad. Lectures are sooooo boring.
HIST 3752 is a great course, but not for the faint of heart. You have two 10-page analytical papers based on four books, a final project, and weekly discussion questions. Don't expect an easy A. The material itself is fascinating. Dr. Walgren exposed us to the cruelties of war in a way I've never seen before. The class will change your views of war
If you get the opportunity to take Dr. Walgren's HIST 2112, take it. The class is a LOT of work and can be anxiety-inducing at times. So why take it? Well...the material and lectures are fascinating. Dr. Walgren focuses on stories that are often neglected. This isn't a "great white men" class. He's also caring and pretty lenient with grading.
Walgren is very engaging and well informed. Every class consists of an hour long lecture, but the lectures are very interesting and he does a great job teaching. Discussion posts weekly, one midterm one final one project and one paper. I dont enjoy history but I enjoyed this class. Attendance is not mandatory, but you should go.
I really enjoyed Dr Walgren's HIST 2111 class. He made his lectures really interested and does a great job explaining everything and answering questions. I don't recommend skipping lectures. The class isn't too much work. There's a weekly discussion post, which won't take more than an hour. There's a project, paper, midterm, and final.
Professor Walgren is an amazing lecturer who is passionate about what he teaches. Every lecture was packed with information, but he made it super enjoyable. He does not take attendance, but showing up will definitely get you the grade you want. He was very accessible when students had questions. 100000% would take this class again.
He was incredibly helpful. Each week you have a discussion post and it is super chill until it isn't. The final and midterm make up half of your grade and they are all written. Granted, he gives you multiple prompts to choose from which is super helpful. It is just horrible to study for.
Disclaimer: I loved this class and Dr. Walgren. The lectures were cool and relevant to my life. The TAs were both kind and supportive (thanks Mike and Rory!). What really set Dr. W apart was that he took time every Wednesday to talk with me, and this is a guy who has hundreds of other students, mind you. Lot of work, yes, but the class changes you.
tests require you to memorize and know a ton of information. He posts information on his slides, but it's not what you need to know for the class. He wants you to think critically about history and connect broader themes, yet doesn't emphasize them in class. analytical paper he makes his students do is on the most boring book I have ever read.
He cares so much about his students and tries his best to let us succeed. His lectures are thought out and truly have a lot of meaning. They can get long sometimes but I think he's worth it. All tests aren't multiple choice and are of different formats to showcase your strengths. It's a content heavy class, but he'll always answer any questions.
I love that he tries to be funny and relatable, he cares about our mental health and he even lets us out one or two minutes early when everyone is packing up. He even recorded his lecture during Thanksgiving break. Coursework is pretty light and its easy to pass even if u dont show up to all the lectures. Attendance is not mandatory.
Dr. Walgren is a fantastic and empathetic professor, and he truly cares about his students. His lectures are very interesting and engaging. The classwork is extremely manageable: a discussion post each week, and a project, an essay, and two exams across the semester.
Dr. Walgren was by far my favorite professor this semester! The classwork is very manageable to do: discussion every week (he only counted 10 out of 13), a project, an essay, and 2 exams. He valued our mental health, and was very clear on expectations for our work. He is always understanding of students having other responsibilities as well.
Great prof, barely have work every week but the midterm and final are the hardest parts so defo study for them
Is a great professor. Not much work every week, only discussion posts. Make sure to study for finals and midterms. Actually cares about his students and obviously loves what he teaches. His lectures were very interesting.
So much work! Weekly discussion posts that take around 2 hours and only count 10% of your grade, 1 project, 1 paper, midterm, and final (both all written - no MC). You basically have to reteach yourself everything for the midterm and final and he skips over a lot of the terms on the list you have to know.
He truly cares about his students and wants them too succeeded. You are graded on very few things. If you are great at reading and interpreting texts, and finding the deeper meaning of them go ahead take this class. That's what the he is looking for. If thats not the case then don't take this class.
Hard to sort primary sources and vocabulary words into "historical themes" (for the midterm and final) bc he rarely mentioned them in class. Lectures were fast-paced. Weekly discussion posts always took 3+ hours to complete bc the primary sources were hard to interpret. TAs are harsh graders on the discussions. Attend lectures for a decent grade!
greatest professor at uga. his lectures are very interesting and he tries to keep students engaged in what sometimes can be boring material. very caring person who does his best to accommodate for the class. graded by TA's on few assignments, so a tough TA could ruin your grade. the class requires a lot of time studying/reading in order to succeed.
Though Dr. Walgren asks a lot out of this course, it truly made me a better history student. Writing analytical essays and conducting historical research on my own are invaluable skills I have attained from his class. He is also a caring individual and willing to work with his students to ensure their growth and success.Would happily take him again.
One of the best professors I've had at UGA. He is very passionate about the lectures he gives. His weekly discussion post assignments are very manageable to complete and prepare you well for lectures and the midterm/final.
This class blows. So much work and his lectures have this annoying tone that makes it seem like he's better than you. Looks like Justin Timberlake though and thats a plus.
I loved Dr. Walgren for HIST 2112. I appreciated the fact that the textbook was free and online. There were discussion posts that really helped prepare me for the midterm/final. The major grades were all writing assignments (discussion posts, midterm essay, final essay, analytical essay) with one audio/visual assignment. His lectures were engaging.
I took Dr. Walgren's HIST 2112 course in the fall. The course was interesting and manageable. Lectures cover a wide range of material (and sometimes his tendency to lecture without notes led to some rambling), but they're really well put together and are clearly designed to appeal to visual learners. I highly enjoyed the class, and would recommend.
Such a good class, y'all! Good lectures, good guy. A decent amount of work for an intro course, but it's doable for sure. Keep up with the discussion posts!!!
Upper-level courses with Walgren are difficult. You are tasked with writing 25-30 pages per semester, reading dense literature, and completing a final project based upon unique research. It is not an easy class, BUT it is a worthwhile one. I switched to the history major after taking it. If you're willing to do the work, Walgren's class is worth it
Last semester, I had a mental crisis that required extensive out-of-class help. 3 of my 4 professors were largely unwilling to accommodate my needs. Dr. Walgren was the ONLY one who listened, cared, and worked with me. You may or may not like history; you may or may not like this class - but if you want a prof that cares about you, he's it.
I'm a non-history major who took Civil War history with Dr. Walgren. I'm a Civil War buff, but this class opened my eyes to the war's true costs. Professor Walgren is generous with his time and puts so much effort into his lectures. The essays are annoying but force you to improve your writing. I'm taking another course with him next semester!
Prof is super passionate about history & tries to make the lectures appealing to visual learners. Midterm and final are ALL written so be a decent writer bc grading can be tough (about 25% and 35% of grade). Weekly discussion posts are time-consuming but help prepare for exams. You'll have one low-stakes audio/visual project and one 6-page paper
Takes a long time to grade assignments and focuses a ton on grammar. His grammar grading is harsher than English professors.
I really really like him as a person, and his lectures are genuinely very very informative and interesting but he does have issues with structure. Grades don't come out on time and his content is not properly spaced out. That being said, I think the year I had him was an outlier for a few reasons so I would take him again definitely
Walgren's World Wars class was neat. Lenient with deadlines, extensions, and absences. The class is a lot of work, but the readings are fascinating and the lectures are never boring. The class did lack structure at times, but in fairness it's a massive timescale covered. He's a historian of WWI, so we focused a lot on that. Nice, approachable guy.
Walgren was a very good professor, he's easily approachable and you can always talk to him in his office hours. His lectures are great and he always takes questions. His class did have a problem meeting deadlines and we often fell behind. But with that in mind, Walgren adapted his exams accordingly and I think he did an excellent job.
Tough grader compared to other History professors at UGA. He is very smart and knows what he's talking about, but you will have to work VERY hard to get an A in this course. I enjoyed the class, but its not one for someone looking to just fill an elective spot or get an easy A.
Prof Walgren gave great lectures and the content was pretty interesting. There were only 5 grades in the class so I found that a little difficult because the midterm and final were really important. He is a nice guy and knows his stuff. If you are a test taker and enjoy few grades I would take him.
I enjoyed the content of this class, but couldn't stand the professor. He was pretty condescending at times and never upheld any of the deadlines he set for himself which was infuriating. We didn't finish either WW1 or WW2 because he did a terrible job sticking to a time frame which was also very annoying. Would never take him again.
absolutely not. loved the material but he was an insanely tough grader. took months to grade a singular paper and was extremely harsh for grading. took so long to get grades back that I had no idea that I wasn't doing well in the class until over a month after midterms. participation matters too much. it's so hard to get a word in. never again.
Professor Walgren's Civil War class was one of my favorite I've taken at UGA. His lectures were genuinely moving, and I appreciated how he could move seamlessly between battle tactics and stories from the homefront. Sometimes Walgren's youth and inexperience showed, but he is super smart and incredibly kind.
The course material is fascinating if you're into the World Wars. We read two books on the Holocaust, and one of them changed my understanding of fascism. Lectures are informative and at times really sad (emotionally). He won't shield you from horrific stuff. Dr. Walgren's a WWI scholar -- expect a lot of talk on trench warfare and endless death.
Professor Walgren gave compelling, interesting lectures and he's a decent guy. The course readings (4 books, weekly articles) were well selected. Grades were not returned on time and the lectures ended abruptly before we could finish WW2. His youthful inexperience was obvious, but I'd take him again in a heartbeat. He's gonna make a great prof.
For a summer class, this class was way too much work. 4-6 hours of lecture every week that you had to watch because there were quizzes on lectures plus reading responses every week on articles, that were hard to comprehend - those took me hour to two hours. He's very good teacher and can explain very thoroughly but the workload was too much.
Currently in Professor Walgreen's HIST 2112 online course. It's a ton of work, but the assignments are well thought out and come with clear grading criteria. Lectures are awesome. No exams: three projects, weekly written responses, and five lecture quizzes. Not for someone who's looking for a blowoff summer class.
Took Walgren in the spring. Cool lectures. Weekly discussions gave me space to talk about cool stuff. The exams were agonizing to study for, but I did better than I thought. I'd make an effort to get to know him. He's a very nice person.
Dr. Walgreen's class was difficult at first and his syllabus and style can be intimidating. But he's actually a great teacher and communicator, willing to work with students with their writing.
This class has been super tough. I'm working 30 hours a week and had 6 hours of lecture to watch each week. You have to be super thorough with taking your notes as the quizzes are very specific, so a 1 1/2 hour lecture turns into 2 1/2 with pausing. Just a really difficult class for the summer. Not sure how he is in person though.
Professor Walgren teaches history as a story, which I enjoyed. The class doesn't have exams, only projects. If you don't like hands on work, avoid this class. I liked the creativity that Walgrens class allowed for but it's not for everyone.
While extremely passionate about his subject, Professor Walgren and his TAs took all summer to grade. Only in July did I receive feedback for assignments submitted in May, so I was never able to apply corrections. He does not drop all of the content in the beginning of the summer, so DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you work FT. Extremely tough grader!
Walgren's online class required more work than any other online class I've taken at UGA. My TA was unreliable and often unhelpful. My rating is based on Walgren himself, who I found to be remarkably engaging in lectures, creative in his assignments, and interested in my well-being. He made history personal. An easy A? No. A worthwhile class? Yes.
He's a good guy, always willing to help explain things to make them make sense. He teaches a good history course in a way that may seem daunting for some, but his lectures and assignments are good and interesting enough (at least for me) to where it kinda cancels out most negatives I could say about him. My only con is probably his untimely grading
Professor Walgren is incredibly sweet. I took both his Civil War and World Wars classes last semester, and he was always open to talk with me and help with assignments. His courses are difficult...there's no sugar-coating it. I was often overwhelmed taking two of his classes at the same time, but he works with you to make sure you succeed.
My favorite professor at UGA! Dr. Walgren is insanely smart and puts SO MUCH work into delivering engaging and thought-provoking lectures. He cares deeply about his students and is also really funny! His courses are not easy by any means, but if you put in the work, Dr. Walgren is a fair grader and you will learn a ton from his classes.
Great and clearly very passionate about history. Doesn't take attendance but I *highly* recommend going to class if you want to do well. Has given extra credit for attending when there was low attendance. Lectures can drag but imo are interesting. Also just a chill, funny, and reasonable person. Highly recommend for history credit!
I loved Dr. Walgren! I took both his 4400 and 3072 this semester, and taking his civil war class next semester. He is an amazing lecturer and super knowledgable! Encouraged us to ask questions and talk about topics with one another. We did not have any tests but papers and projects and lecture quizzes. Tough grader but gives great feedback!
He was one of the best history teachers I have had. Attendance is not mandatory but is in your best interest to go to class because solely going based on the lecture notes posted online will not get you a good grade in the class. He is extremely passionate about history and often tells stories so that we can better grasp the material.
This year I'm thankful for Dr. Walgren.
He is very knowledgeable and gives amazing lectures. The exams were very lengthy though and required a lot of memorization. The grades in class were broken up into a project, an essay, discussion posts, and two exams, so there was lots of flexibility if one grade didn't go well. It was just as tedious as it was interesting.
Professor Walgren is very nice and has great lectures that help a lot. Not a lot of homework and attendance isn't mandatory but always go because he gives a lot more info that's not on the powerpoints. Easy class if you put in the work and go to class.
Extremely lecture-heavy. Often got off-topic. Exams are all hand-written free responses, so be prepared to write 5-8 pages on exam days. Takes a long time to grade everything. Not good at responding to emails. Do not recommend!
Love the content, Walgren cares about teaching the truth of history. But why do I have to: every WEEK- read 3-4 sources & write 6 paragraphs; midterm- memorize 40+ terms, 4 short paragraphs on random terms, identify a random source and explain it, and write a thematic essay; final- same as midterm + ANOTHER ESSAY. All for a 2000-level class???
I wished the other reviews had told me about the amount of work I would have to do for this class, even though it is intro-level. I agree with understanding the significance of the events and characters of history, but not when I have to write 2 pages every week, a 5-page essay on a book, and ~6-8 pages on the midterms and final.
This class was so difficult for no reason.
I really enjoyed Professor Walgren's lectures and enthusiasm. You can tell he puts a ton of work into his slides. This is an extremely arduous course, though...unnecessarily difficult for an intro course. If you love history take him. If not, there may be easier professors.
This class is way too much for a 2000 level course. 300 word minimum discussion posts every week (if you want an A then at least 1000 words every week on 4-5 sources in old English (25%)). There's a 6 page paper to write over a book and an audio visual assignment each worth 15%. Exams are all writing. He also insists on being called professor.....
dr. walgren and his ta's took forever to grade assignments and answer emails. the class has 5-6 hours worth of lectures per week that you must watch because the quizzes are super specific and there's extra work to do. there was no feedback to help us with future assignments. i would not recommend this class if you will be busy over the summer.
This class is not easy but I believe it was fair. Professor Walgren made it clear how to do well on the essay, exams, and project. He also held two exam review sessions on his own time, which I thought was very cool. Lectures were very good. I hate history but found myself coming to class just to learn more about the past.
This class required a lot of work. He doesn't require specific historical details but instead tends to focus on the important historical themes. Most of the class is note-taking and doing your own analyses on historical texts. I am not a history person. If you put enough time & effort into this class, you will do well.
Dr. Walgren is tough - there's lots of homework (readings/writing). But he's very knowledgeable, and I learned a lot. Be on top of things; even though attendance isn't mandatory, he may give bonus points to those who attend. Start the 300 page book early in the semester instead of waiting like me since there aren't extensions for papers/projects.
Lectures a lot but engaging. You read a lot but he chooses interesting readings. Very attentive to mental health needs & willing to work with you on assignments if you reach out in reasonable time. A few essays/projects based on assigned readings but gives a lot of info on what he expects. Can take a long time to grade but gives good feedback
He was just not for me. He is very knowledgeable on the subject and his lectures were bearable. you must go to class and study in order to do well
Dr. Walgren is awesome. This class is definitely a lot of work, as the other reviews have mentioned, but I found myself honestly excited to do my homework and go to class because of how engaging his lectures and the materials he assigns us to read were. Despite the workload, this class was by far my favorite class that I took this past semester.
pretty fair professor who is quite knowledgeable. the weekly discussion posts weren't too bad and only took about two hours a week. 2 projects given out that took quite a bit yet he gives ample time to complete them. he uses his lectures to give information that isn't in the notes so attendance is kinda important. free textbook cool too
Professor walgren was great, but it mainly depends on ur TA. Ur graded on a project, one essay, midterm and final. Attendance is not mandatory but tests are based off his lectures and you cant get all the info from slides he posts. I recommend going to office hours for project/essay to make sure your TA approves your idea.
Great prof. There's a ton of reading but most of it's interesting. Provided a very different take on the war than I was used to -- not just battles but women on the homefront, disease, and Native Americans. It's also a surprisingly sad course. Be prepared for emotional topics and difficult ideas. Dr. Walgren navigated them well tho.
Love, love, love Dr. Walgren. Bio major, I generally have disliked history. What a difference a good prof makes. The dude's lectures are freaking good. Tells the blunt truth. Slides are interesting to look at. Not a class to skip, but honestly I don't want to.
Memory of WW2 is eye-opening and...brutal. Not difficult, the class is actually kinda easy. But the content is hard to stomach. And it's week after week of it. Walgren is a great guy and I'd take another class with him, but I won't be sad to put 4402 in the rearview mirrror
I would say this is the best professor for the history credit. They don't make any of the classes easy, but if you go to class you'll barely have to do any thinking outside of class. There are open note in person quizzes, reading responses most weeks, 2 projects and 2 exams. The project I did in 1 night and got an 100. Take him!
Will take 2 weeks to a month to grade an assignment that makes up the majority of your grade, heavily grades all your papers as if it were a graduate-level English class, and will assign final projects/papers that take up so much time that you will not have the chance to work on other class work. Has ruined my love of history.
DO NOT take him if you can help it! Everything is graded harshly by TAs who expect you to be historians with your work. Its April and half of our grades aren't in yet so you have no idea where you stand in the class. His lectures are kind of interesting but the way he has handled the class pisses me off. No idea how he has so many 5-star reviews
HIST 4402 is pretty chill. Weekly reading responses that he grades extremely easily. You will write a lot but he gives a lot of attention to making you a better writer. The material is sad and sometimes uncomfortable. WW2 will not look the same after you take this class. One of my favorite courses I've taken at UGA
Great option for taking history graduation requirement. I heard that Drake is much harder and this class puts much less pressure for exams as they only count as 35% of you're overall grade. Attendance isn't mandatory, but it helps so much with in class lecture quizzes. He's extremely fair and makes adjustments when things need to change in class.
World War 2 in memory is not an easy class. The reading load is ungodly -- expect 50-60 pages of reading PER WEEK. Professor Walgren is a nice guy and he means well, but this class seems designed for graduate students. As other reviewers have said, Walgren's classes are interesting but you better come prepared if you want an A.
One 5-page essay, one project, 5 open note quizzes, reading response every week, midterm, and final. The whole class is just longgg lectures. Nice and caring, but did not give clear grading criteria on reading responses so TA's graded harshly. made my grade suffer a bit ;-; There's quite a bit of reading, but it's manageable. Class is challenging.
Maybe its b/c I speak with Prof Walgren regularly, but I think this class is awesome. Lectures are great. He's very well spoken. And, unlike some of the reviews, i dont think this class was hard or that it asked too much of me. 1 easy project (you make a podcast), one 5 pg essay, 2 exams, 5 open note quizzes, 6 reading responses. Free textbook.
Nothing but bad things to say. Bout to graduate & NEVER had a disorganized class assign this much: 6 800-word discussion posts, a 5-page paper about his research specialty, a creative assignment, 5 in-class lecture quizzes the majority took without attending lectures, and a midterm and final. Barely made it to WW2 before he started rushing through.
he lacks clear grading criteria which is really frustrating sometimes. definitely take advantage of meeting w/ your TA. Midterm and final are completely written which I think is a plus over mcq. while attendance isn't mandatory, i'd highly recommend it. i ultimately just got so annoyed with this class over the course of the semester
Papers are worth 40%, and getting a B in the first paper is considered "good" if you never took his class. However, because the papers are worth so much, even if you get As for everything, it is hard to achieve a high grade in this class. Papers for his class is similar to an English course, would advise not taking him if you struggle with essays.
Very cool professor. The lectures were interesting and the out of class work was surprisingly light. No breakout sessions so class basically consisted of long lectures, but Dr. Walgren tried to keep us stimulated. Lot of bonus opportunities if you attend class!
Hardest class I took at UGA by a landslide, but also the most impactful. There were times I wanted to TP his house and times I wanted to go for a drink with him. He is a tough grader with high expectations, but he ultimately makes you a better writer. The content in WW2 in memory was brutal, but important. It changed my perspective on WW2 forever.
Professor Walgren was a great professor, he just had a couple complications with personal issues which in my opinion he made up for with laid back due dates and extra credit. I honestly didn't pay attention to a single lecture and I was able to pull an A in the class, there are weekly 600 word discussion posts, but they're extremely helpful
I am not a fan of history and only took the course to fulfill a credit. It was challenging but not awful. I think it also depends on the TA you get for the course seeing as both the midterm and final are completely written. There is also an essay that is worth 20%, so if you dont like writing, swear clear!
Professor Walgren is so kind and understanding! I had multiple issues pop up during the semester and he was always willing to accommodate me. The class isn't too hard but you need to keep up with readings. Lectures are great but sometimes a bit too long. Overall, a great class and a great teacher.
Shoved over a 100 years of history into 21 lectures. Follows the guideline, so every week I had hours and hours of lectures and readings. Despite what I read prior to taking this course, the online version had no extra credit. There were five timed essays & six lecture quizzes (open note). Mid and Final were not open note. He is a nice fella though
Great guy; terrible summer class to take. When I saw the other ratings saying it was a lot of work, I really underestimated it. First week was around 12 hours of lecture, second week around 13-14 hours, and the third week 10 hours. The midterm and final are so hard to study for because you have around 50-60 terms and any 10 can be chosen. 5/10.
5 timed writing assessments (open-note), 6 lecture quizzes (open-note), a midterm and a final (all written; final has cumulative essay at end). Spent upward of 15 hours a week to barely get an A. TAs really make or break your time in this class, though I would not recommend this maymester unless you absolutely need it. Quizzes specific to lecture.
I would first like to say that there was no extra credit. I took pages of notes, did my best on the writings & quizzes, and could not pull out an A. There's not a lot to be graded on, readings are oddly specific (you have to remember minute details from them), and so are quizzes. Everything else was writing (did not show how much I actually knew)
Civil War class was great. Dr. Walgren made the course feel personal. There are several essays, which kinda suck, but the readings will keep your interest. Cute guy, too. The class isn't easy and I had to work for an A, but it's not impossible.
Walgrens world wars class tried to cover a ton of material and we didn't finish ww2. But I learned a crazy amount about world war 1 (his specialty) and the class wasn't too hard. Make sure you go to his office hours and submit drafts ahead of time -- he's a picky essay grader.
I had Dr. Walgren for his online Maymester course. I mostly agree with the other reviewers -- the course is hard and requires a lot of work. I did appreciate the structure though. You know what is expected well in advance, and all the material was posted weeks ahead of time. I learned a lot but it was stressful.
Civil war with walgren was an emotional class. He emphasizes the suffering and death that the war brought, and he delivers his lectures in a way to maximize emotional impact. Walgren's got a bit of an ego (says his lectures are like "podcasts") and his essay grading will infuriate you. But the class made me a better writer and person.
Memory of World War II mandated a ton of reading and writing. I think I probably wrote 40 pages total including essays and reading responses. Course content is really important to know. Hard AND necessary class IMO
Walgren's a good guy, you just have to get used to his expectations and the workload. A lot of writing and reading but its a history course so thats pretty normal. My advice is to go to his office hours, he is extremely helpful and gives you a clear path to succeed.
Walgren knows his stuff about World War II. Only take this class if you're prepared to have your cherished "good war" narratives seriously questioned and to talk about / see difficult things. This class was life altering.
Great Guy. You have to show up to class to get the notes. This is an overall hard class but I do think that he would be a great option if you have to take it. I am not a History person at all but he made this class somewhat bearable. Reading responses are a big part of your grade so its easy to do well. 2 tests (essay based) and in class quizzes.
Professor Walgren is an excellent choice for the HIST requirement. The classes are all lecture-centered, but most are interesting and he tries to make it fun when he can. TBF, I don't know how a class with hundreds of people could be anything else. No attendance but you need to go. Extra credit opportunities. Workload isn't bad at all.
I've really enjoyed Dr. Walgren's Civil War class! He genuinely seems to enjoy the subject and it comes through in his presentations. The workload isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be -- alternates between lecture quizzes and reading responses, two short papers, no midterm, and an opportunity for a partnered final project.
Professor is overly specific with what he wants when it comes to quizzes and writing assignments. Is very passionate and expects the same from us, but is a nice guy. Takes points off for minuscule errors and attendance is mandatory. Class is more difficult than it should be.
I've taken four courses with Dr. Walgren, he is a kind and compassionate teacher who is able to translate very emotionally distressing material into manageable lectures and assignments. Vietnam was no different. Very much enjoyed this class. Like his other classes, expect to read and write and tough grading. worth it though; my fav prof at UGA.
Cant say enough good things about Professor Walgren's class! Such a kind human being. The class is hard and you need to attend class, but youll learn about history in ways that matter.
This was genuinely the hardest class I have ever taken at UGA, and it is an intro class. The grading can be nitpicky depending on your TA. I would pour my heart and soul into those assignments and never do as well as I thought I should have. Professor Walgren cares about his students but this class was my biggest stress this semester by far.
Dr. Walgren is great! The class is hard for an intro class but if you show up to lectures and take good notes you'll be fine. The exam review guides are helpful and I never felt unprepared. There were only 2 exams but other assignments to help boost your grade. I'm not a history person, but I did better than I expected and enjoyed this class.
Unnecessarily harsh grading for a required intro class. The scoring criteria and guidelines were unclear and the TA would not provide feedback or respond to emails in a timely manner. Impossible to score well on exams or essays, it seemed like the TA was searching for little things to take off on. Do not recommend at all.
Solid teacher. Lectures a lot, as it is a history class. But seems to read off pre-written essays or notes that are a bit too formal. Nice, engaging guy. Way too much writing for exams.
The HIST2112 class was decent, but the in class tests were hard and super tedious.Thankfully they are only 10% of the grade. I got Hannah Hamrick as my TA and she was wonderful tho, she extended deadlines, helped with studying, and was very patient. Make sure to do all seven of the reading responses, they are worth 25% of your grade but easy A's.
Dr. Walgren's military history classes (WWII, Civil War, Vietnam War) are by far the best history classes that I've taken at UGA. His lectures are super engaging, straightforward, and well-researched. The papers are graded a little tough, but he's always willing to proofread them and give a huge amount of very helpful feedback. Very nice guy, too.
Attendance is not mandatory but there's stuff on quizzes that Dr.Walgren says exclusively in lectures so you should attend. This class is heavily writing based and the grading depends on your TA. I'm not much of a history person but this was the most interesting history class I've taken, I definitely recommend.
I absolutely love Dr. Walgren. Though the class is simply lecture everyday, he somehow finds a way to make them very interesting and I learned more about history in his class than any class taken before. His midterm and final require lots of studying, but if you work hard and show up to class, you will do just fine.
I've taken a bunch of classes with Dr. Walgren, and they're the best classes that I've taken at UGA. His lectures are awesome and he's a genuinely nice, funny, easy-to-reach guy. The papers are graded tough, but he'll review them ahead of time and give you great feedback. Even if you don't like military history, I couldn't recommend him enough.
Professor Walgren's 2112 class can be challenging, but manageable if you engage with the material. The lectures are informative, and the weekly assignments, like discussion posts and quizzes, help solidify the content. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for study prep alongside the provided textbook.
Walgren's lectures are the best I've had at UGA. It's basically like he's reading out of a book he wrote or narrating a documentary. They focus on topics/people that aren't normally included in discussions of Vietnam; he's a tough grader on papers but will read them ahead of time and give good notes. Super nice dude who wants you to do your best.
Dr. Walgren is phenomenal. He is so knowledgeable and clearly loves what he does, making the class super interesting. I love this guy
Lowkey rude. Says assignments are low stakes then gives a bad grade. Talks the entire time. Was not very accommodating at all when I had to miss class for other commitments and made it extremely difficult to make up work I missed.
Dr. Walgren is a nice guy and clearly very passionate. However, everything is graded by TA's and some are pretty harsh graders. Reading assignments every week, a project that was pretty easy, 2 tests, and one paper. The assignments aren't hard but take up some time. The grades were too harsh for an intro class.
Dr. Walgren is a great lecturer and makes class seem like he is reading from a book. The lecture quizzes are difficult as they are about very small details he says in class. The reading responses are 25% of your grade and your grade depends on who your TA is. The paper is based on an extremely boring book. It's a lot of work for an intro class
This professor is the most insufferable I've had. He reads off a pre-scripted paper full of names and dates, leaving no time to keep up. You're expected to jot down everything for ridiculous quizzes while he recites details. When students struggle he says,“Working hard does not guarantee you success, that's just a fact of life.” Avoid at all costs.
Too hard for intro class, harder than biochem tbh. TA's = harsh graders, reading assignments due every week that "shouldn't take more than 2 hours".. it takes me 4 and I have yet to get a 100 on it. Midterm is CRAZY. In class quizzes are so detail-based, he says you will do good on them if you go to class, I go to class and still have failed them.
I liked this class a lot, but your grade will really depend on how lucky you get with your TA. My TA is great, but she it too good at her job, as in she grades everything very critically (as she should), which is not a detriment to her, but the same work that I had submitted to her if I had my friends TA's would have been given 100s, and not 80s.
I can't say enough good things about Dr. Walgren. His classes are very lecture heavy, but very interesting! He lectures like he's telling a story, and is clearly very passionate about history. He is funny, kind, offers a lot of extra credit and the workload was totally manageable. One of the best professors I've taken at UGA. Take him!
This class is SOOO much work for an introductory course. . Major grades come from 7 reading responses (25%) midterm and final (30%), a project (10%), an argumentative essay (25%) and 5 lecture quizzes (10%). Just be super prepared to read and do a lot of work. I wouldn't take unless you have to.
your grade in this class will depend on the ta you get. some people in my class have gotten a's on everything for doing the bare minimum but others cant get higher than an 80. the whole class is pretty much writing. the final paper is unnecessarily hard and he didn't even cover the material about it until the last class.
I adore Dr. Walgren! Yes, he is a hard grader. Yes, you'll need to work for an A. But he has taught me so much about not only warfare but what it means to be human. It's hard to exactly say, but I've come out of each of his classes feeling inspired. Take him if you want a meaningful experience, if you want an A, there are easier profs.
Dr. Walgren is so kind and so funny! It's clear he has a passion for this class and for the both the students and the section leaders. While the content isn't always as gripping as some other classes, he does a good job at presenting and keeping the class engaged. Only complaint is sometimes the grades are a little tough, but otherwise 10/10!!
took him cuz ratings were good (admit that is my own fault) but after this semester i am so upset for taking his class because it was so much WORK. its college, idm working hard, but when you get in this class and realize none of the other hist professors give out this much work, you will viscerally understand the importance of saving some sweat!
This class was way to much work considering it is a survey level course. Dr. Walgren is a great professor but if you dont go to lectures you will fall behind. The TA's are tough graders and it is a work heavy course. Just save your self the time and energy and don't take this class.
Im currently sitting in the library on hour six of studying for this final. I WANT to say this class isnt worth it but Walgren is old school in the best way. The assignments are difficult but fair. His lectures are amazing. Hes blunt in ways that can upset some people. I'd definitely say he's a prof that you either love or hate.
We had weekly discussion posts on readings that had to be pretty long but I think they were helpful. Had midterm/final and two papers. His lectures are amazing. He told us he won't be at UGA anymore and I can't really fit all that I want to say here, but if he goes to a new school and anyone there sees this I would highly recommend taking him.
If you work hard you will do well but there is SO much unnecessary work and the class is so much harder than it needs to be for an intro history class. Avoid if you can, I've heard the post Civil War classes with other professors are significantly easier for the same amount of credit.
Can't recommend Dr. Walgren's World War II class enough. Lectures were story-like and deeply personal. Some of the readings were boring but I enjoyed most of them. Lot of writing. I took the class as an elective and don't regret it.
Would not recommend. So so so much work and lectures were way too detailed for what we had to know.
Walgren is pretty and his lectures are interesting. That's all the good I can say. He's arrogant, rude, and expects far too much from an intro course. Tbf, he didn't hide any of this. His syllabus flat out says the course isn't easy, but I thought it was a bluff or hyperbole...nope! And I second the AI warning - just don't. You'll be tempted.
He's respectable, however, grading is EXTREMELY harsh. So much stuff to know and so much homework. Extremely writing-intensive class with little to no wiggle room for error. If the TA says something sounds right for an essay, don't believe them. If you keep it as is, they will give you a B. Overall, he's fine but if possible take another professor.
War and Society was one of, if the the, best course I've taken at UGA. The material is interesting (although a bit male-centric) and the assignments felt worth my time. I definitely improved as a writer; Walgren makes sure of that. What set Dr. Walgren apart was the whole class vibe he created. By the end of the semester, 3752 felt like family.
Lectures are by no means overly interesting but also not completely a bore. My complaint on this course is that your grade solely depends on your TA. Some seem to give out free 100s while some don't give above a 90. (and to get a 90+ you have to do more work than listed) Lots of homework compared to other History classes, so take another if you can
Dr. Walgren is genuinely one of my favorite professors. His lectures are very interesting and it's extremely important that you go to class to hear everything. Your grades depend on your TA, but as long as you follow the rubric and ask questions you'll do fine. Lots of homework for a general class, but you couldn't get a better professor!
Walgren's a very funny guy, always kept the lectures as upbeat as possible despite the material getting dry sometimes. Offered a lot of extra credit. I really liked the class, tho I know others who thought it was too hard.
so much work don't take him the ta's grade so harshly.
I thoroughly enjoyed taking Walgren's War and Society class. I learned a lot from him and his lectures and I could tell he really cares about his students and wants them to do well. He was very patient with me when I would ask a lot of questions during office hours.
Great guy who is passionate about history. Very interesting lectures that make you think differently of historical figures. Workload is heavy and you have to adapt to how your section leader grades. A lot of work for a required class but very enjoyable topic.
Decent professor overall but requires some effort for the class. I showed up to class, paid a little attention, studied the study guides given, did my homework and got an A. There are easier professors, but Andrew is by no means a bad one. The TA's do vary, but are mostly nice and willing to work with you. Simply strict but fair.
A tough class for a 2000-level course, do not take him he gives out so much work. The TA's also are super tough graders. Will not recommend at all.
Quite a lot of work for an intro level class—particularly in the last few weeks. Gave very engaging lectures, and weekly readings were very manageable. He was receptive to the concerns of the class and gave us a free 100 on one of the lecture quizzes. I think a lot of your experience could depend on the section leader/TA you get assigned.
Can't say good enough things about Walgren's World War II class. He covered the war from the ground and we learned stories that you'd never hear about in textbooks. Most of the readings were great (although long -- don't enroll unless you have the stomach for 40-50 pages of reading/week). Feedback on essays was harsh but helped in the long run.
For a survey level course, this was the most I've had to do for any class. It felt like there was just constant busy work and the lectures were unbearably boring. The essay you have to write is on a super boring book, has to be artificially inflated, and its 25% of the grade. Its not hard, just so much boring work.
I really enjoyed this class, but clearly its no t for everyone. I thought the lectures kept my attention (most of the time) and Walgren is really funny. But my friend was in his morning section and had very different opinions of him...so seems like people vibe with him and others don't. I did and think the course was worth my time
Take this class!!! I think Walgren is leaving this year, so if a student from another school sees this: This class is awesome! Changed how I see war.
Worst course, worst teacher and worst TAs I have taken at UGA. Walgren made this course much harder than it should be for a history class. Walgren's lectures were boring. His TAs who did all the grading were very harsh, applied no criteria and had no idea what they were doing. Do not take Walgren with his very harsh TAs if you value your GPA.
This was the most pleasantly surprised Ive been with any of my core classes. Thought it would suck, but the lectures were decent and my TA, Regan, was awesome! TAs will make or break your experience in this class for sure
really nice guy, lectures were solid. it was just sooo much work for a core class.
I very much enjoyed Dr. Walgren's Maymester class -- you have 7 timed writing responses and a final exam. The lectures were story driven and i never felt like i was expected to memorize little things. The TWAs were heavy on pop culture which was cool -- watched old Holywood movies and twilight zone episodes. Lot of work, but fair.
Would not recommend for a maymester. Do not let the good rating fool you, He knows his course is unenjoyable yet continues to increase the difficulty of the course. While I like history, He made learning it a chore. All exams are lockdown browser, and each lecture lasts 1 to 2 hours.
This is probably the best history professor you'll get at UGA. There are only 7 exams with lockdown browser with a timer and a final, but they are all open note. The grading was kind of unclear, but the TA and the professor are extremely responsive and understanding. Know that this course is extremely challenging but manageable with effort.
Dr. Walgren's Maymester class isn't easy. You'll watch what seems like endless hours of lectures, but fortunately most of them are bearable. I was fortunate to have a great TA who was very understanding. Your experience in the class will depend greatly on who is grading your work.
Love, love, love Dr. Walgren! This was a super interesting class. A word of warning though -- the class is almost entirely writing timed essays. If you're not good under pressure or a decent writer you may consider other teachers.
Somehow I managed to complete the course in about 6ish FULL 24 hour days of actually studying and writing over the 3.5 weeks. Don't take this unless you can jam and eloquently regurgitate info like nobody's business. I HATE history, so I gladly suffered through the month of class. It was risky and tough but worth it. Hopefully you get a decent TA.
His maymester class is very challenging. In person this class would be amazing but because it is a maymester and I don't like watching 2hr of lecture every day I would only recommend taking this class if you have the time for it. Lockdown browser 7 timed writes and a final all open note.
It was a lot of work, but I loved this class! Keep up with the lectures and write good notes, you'll do fine. This class was graded by 7 timed writing assignments and the final. Sometimes the grading was a little unclear, but if you email him/your TA they will respond. I don't consider myself a history person, but his lectures were interesting.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but you miss a lot if you skip (stuff on quizzes/tests you don't get from slides). This class was honestly more work for me than some of my CS classes, but Dr. Walgren is great, but expects a lot out of you. Probably a bit too much for a class everyone has to take, but I learned a lot in this class and was interested.
Dr. Walgren is unfortinately no longer at UGA, but for students considering his classes elsewhere, TAKE HIM! His military history classes are so interesting. He covers traditional subjects like strategy, tactics, and battles, but also war and sexuality, war crimes/genocide, memory...I took two of his classes on WW2 and they changed my life.
