Such a sweet guy who really cares about his students and wants everyone to do well. Dont be afraid to reach out to him if you have an issue. He really values students showing they care so showing up to office hours or putting in any kind of extra effort will go a long way with him.
The infamous Big Bang. This is basically a high school class with lots of little assignments that pad your grade, but then the tests can be really challenging. Dr. West can be really nice and is enthusiastic about astronomy, but when it comes to flexibility around assignments he is pretty rigid and passive aggressive. Group work throughout.
Dr. West was such a privilege to learn from. If you are looking for a way to knock out your science credit, I highly recommend taking his class. He is enthusiastic and knows how to make science interesting and engaging for non STEM students. You definitely need to attend lectures and take good notes though. There is no textbook and you can't google
Never seen a teacher with a higher ego than Mr West. There are 3 group tests. Group tests are unfair for many reasons. Many people can get exams beforehand, which wrecks the curve for honest people.
He is passionate about his subject and an engaging lecturer. However, his insistence that students attend office hours or go to after class events to demonstrate their commitment to A006 is unreasonable. College students are busy. You are entitled to our scheduled class time. If I am struggling I will attend office hours, otherwise...leave me alone
Pettiest person I have ever met. Tests don't even cover what is gone over in lecture/assignments. Take ur nat science w a prof who actually cares for their students (i.e prof Roebuck, AST09).
He is the CEO of getting mad at people for not attending office hours. He proceeds to take his anger out by making exams unnecessarily hard. Absolute joke
huge ego. Loves to just absolutely mentally abuse students for no good reason. His ego gets in the way of your ability to learn. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH.
I'm honestly not sure why Prof. West wants to teach. While he's passionate for his work, he seems more interested in fueling his massive ego and trying to make students feel bad they aren't dedicating their entire lives to his course. Unfriendly professor, and even worse tests. Would not recommend this course if you want to enjoy a science class.
Dr. West is single-handedly the most passive-aggressive professor I've ever had in my entire life. He thinks we should make his class our priority when in reality we're all taking it to fill the science req. He is genuinely so aggressive and tries to make his students fail/get bad grades.
very passive-aggressive and basically wants to see his students fail.
Do not take this class. Almost nothing from lectures or assignments show up on the exams. It's so funny how he spends more time trying to catch people cheating instead of caring about teaching the material. All around fake and lousy professor.
super petty and loves to humiliate his students. huge ego, and tries super hard to catch people cheating. Even if you pay 100% attention in class and do all his homework, you might still not be ready the exam. Exam is super tricky and hard.
This guy sucks. Feel bad for his kids
Do not take this class please. If you need a science credit, take another class.
Easily the worst experience I've had at Tufts University so far. Exams barely cover anything that is taught during lectures. He also has a massive ego, which is like the cherry on top for all the bs this class presents.
I honestly started off liking him and thought his lectures were pretty engaging. You learn quickly though he can be pretty passive aggressive and guilt trips students into attending office hours. His exams are very hard but will the blame the class for doing bad and cares more about catching cheaters then creating a fair learning environment.
Don't take Big Bang if you think it's going to be an easy A and you won't have to do work. He knows that's why people take it and he makes it difficult out of spite. Probably one of the pettiest people I've ever encountered.
I hope Tufts takes a look at these ratings and sees how bad of a teacher mr.West is. I honestly and truly believe that he wants to see his students fail. So funny how he will screw people over and then beg them not to pass fail the class lmao
Everyone knows this is a science class for non-STEM majors. At first, I liked the professor and appreciated his enthusiasm about the material. That changed when I saw how ridiculously hard the exams are and how rude he is in emails. He also used entrapment to catch students cheating on an exam. I'm a good student, but this was not worth the stress
West is the worst professor I've ever had the displeasure of having. Big Bang is a class for non-STEM people to fulfill their science requirement. West completely ignores this and expects this class to be your top priority. He's rude, condescending, and full of himself, and I truly believe he wants his students to fail.
I have never rated anyone on rate my professor before; however, I felt I needed to write about Andrew West. He does not want his students to succeed and is very harsh. I understand that he knows his material well and genuinely cares, but he is not a good teacher and has such a huge ego. AVOID
His exams are excessively hard for a class meant for non-STEM majors and the questions he asks are barely touched upon in lectures. Additionally, he can be insensitive and passive aggressive about people joining online during a literal pandemic. Not an easy A class by any means, I recommend not taking it for the science req.
- content is reletivly easy to understand but tests are super hard and don't cover class content - wants to catch cheaters so just DON'T CHEAT. idk why ppl feel so entitled to cheat - final project saves grade!
Awful, awful, absolutely awful
Main issue w this guy is not the cheating questions but is with the exams and quizzes. Only the bio/chem quizzes are actually related to course content, the exams have a lot of stuff not properly covered in class.
I had professor West last semester. Everyone loved him. This semester he caught a bunch of people cheating and the whole class turned on him. I understand the frustration but that's not a reason to completely ruin his reputation. He was a fair grader and a good teacher when I had him. I agree the tests have content that isn't properly covered.
Professor West was a delight. He cares deeply about his students and the material he covers. All of the negative reviews coming in from people who were caught cheating should not taint your view of this talented and passionate professor.
I don't believe all the 1-star ratings are justified but he is also not the gem that a lot of people are saying. I took this class in the fall of 2021 before all the cheating stuff happened and did not have a great time. He just needs to realize that this class is for non-stem majors and they won't dedicate their entire lives to the course.
Hard to write a fair review of Dr. West bc he is so passionate and enthusiastic about science, but made it hard to love. A lot of these bad reviews are from a poorly handled and angry/passive aggressive response to a cheating scandal (deliberate bait question to catch cheaters on take-home tests). Difficult and poorly paced class, only about grade.
Dr. West is a great, enthusiastic lecturer. However, his constant passive aggressiveness makes learning in this class extremely discouraging. I was very excited for this course at the beginning of the semester, but the professor's constant aggressive comments made me feel terrible. His lectures are dense and exams are hard. This is not an easy A...
I think a lot of his bad reviews come from people who expected this course to be a blow-off and were frustrated when he expected a greater level of effort. If you want to take this course because you think it'll be free science credit, don't. This course will give you a great understanding of science, but you must take it seriously and HONESTLY.
If you try hard, the class is fine. However, this class is only taken because it is to fulfill a natural science requirement. Don't expect an easy A. Take any other natural science class.
I was not part of the drama in Spring 2022, so I'm trying to be objective: I'm giving him a 1.0 based on his personality and exams. He is condescending, passive-aggressive, and rude. I never felt I could safely ask him questions. The exams are very loosely related to the content covered. Getting an A is possible but not worth it. Avoid if you can.
West is extremely passive-aggressive and his exams are borderline impossible as they barely cover class content and go off on irrelevant tangents. Worst class I have ever taken. I would recommend never taking this class.
He's a good professor, clearly knows his stuff and cares about it. However, he has a pretty large ego and is very passive aggressive. I think he's fair with his grading curves, but unfair with his exams. A lot of 1.0 reviews from 2022 are a result of a particular incident, which he handled poorly and vindictively, but on the whole not bad.
I took Andrew West's class Big Bang to Humankind in the Fall of 2021 so I believe I have an objective standpoint as I was not included or impacted by this semester's cheating scandal. Professor West was unnecessarily rude, sassy, and I genuinely believe he did not want to see his students succeed. His tests did not reflect material learned in class
This was one of the worst classes I've ever taken. I took it in Fall 2021 and I've never had such a bad professor. West was condescending, rude, and very bad with his students. He treated everyone like a child and would blame you if you had a problem with anything related to the course. His lectures were extremely boring and his tests were hard.
Even if you work really hard in this class: participate, attend crash courses and office hours, meet up with your study group every week and stay on top of the material, the exams will destroy your grade because they are not relevant to the material at all. Do not take if u care ab ur mental health. This man is so rude and condescending.
Do not take any of his classes. He is the worst person to ever teach. This guy is so brutal. Despite a good grade in the class, it took up so much outside time that I was stressing about a class no one cares about. If you ever want to be happy in life, do not take his class. Brutal guy, brutal class
Engaging lecturer, easy assignments, lots of group work (you choose groups or he puts you in one), very intro level. manageable class, you have to answer (ungraded) polls for participation credit. takes cheating VERY seriously. exams were brutal, asked very specific questions that sections 2 and 3 didn't prepare us for
This guy is the worst professor I have had the displeasure of learning under. He is rude, condescending, and a bad lecturer. His tests have nothing to do with the content covered. I will note that he is fair, and will give you a chance to make up for bad grades, but the stress of his class is not worth it. I would avoid at all costs.
Just not a very reasonable guy. The material he teaches is pretty interesting, but the structure of the class just isn't good. The way the grading is set up is bad, overall just a bad experience.
Super engaging, class is very organized for students to learn. West gives students plenty of chances to make up assignments so that you get the full grade. At the end of the day he just wants his students to learn. He's great I never worried in this class as long as you don't cheat and listen to his lectures you'll get an A and actually learn.
Great class especially for non-science majors. Gives clear instructions. The take-home exams are challenging, but you get a redo.
Lovely guy and super knowledgable. Big Bang was a great class, and the rest of these reviews are tainted by people who tried to cheat on his exams.
I took the class during the semester of the cheating scandal, but his low rating is not deserved. He is clearly passionate about learning and teaches interesting material, but can be intimidating to talk to.
I took big bang. I rarely went to lectures. The exams were hard but corrections were allowed.
Took Big Bang in Fall 22. Worst class I've taken so far; I just don't think teaching is for him. He was clearly passionate about the material and he taught it alright, but the way he structured the class was frustrating and anxiety-inducing: mainly the exams, they're open note, but the questions are often too unrelated to the stuff taught in class.
I took big bang in fall 22 in order to fulfill a science distribution requirement. Didn't expect to enjoy the class but he made the material interesting and was clearly very passionate about the material which he teaches. Exams were hard, but the rest of the work is very manageable.
Don't be misled by bad reviews. Dr. West changed the course model in Fall 2022 to benefit students. Essentially a pass/fail grading model. Do the work and you'll get an A. 2 Exams open-ended and complicated but also open-note and you get a free redo. Cool creative final project. Appreciate that he recognized what wasn't working and changed.
West brings so much passion to each lecture, making them all engaging, even for non-STEM students. Incredibly easy - you're guaranteed an A as long as you complete most homework assignments and two take-home tests (which you get free revisions on). Don't be deterred by bad reviews - mostly written by students who got caught during cheating scandal.
Make no mistake, this class isn't just a breeze easy A. That being said, you get what you put in to this class. Dr. West and accompanying professors make this class an amazing experience. They display extreme knowledge and interest in their subjects and every class was as captivating as the last.
Many ppl say it's an easy A. I disagree. This class is a lot of work. Some materials can be fun while others are dry. Dr. West is passionate about science but also tries to set you up in the exam even in the fall of 2022. He brings unnecessary stress to the class. If you look for an easy A, this is not the right class.
This is not an easy A class. But, so long as you put in the effort, you can get an A. Midterms are take home and open note, but the questions on them are difficult and some are trick questions to catch cheaters. The grading scale allows for redos for everything, which makes it easier to get an A. Each lecture was hit or miss in terms of interest
Under normal circumstances this would have been an easy class but the new grading criteria were absolutely horrible and made no sense. I had a perfect score in everything except the second midterm and I got a B. Would not recommend this class or professor.
i had mono. i missed a quiz because i was in the hospital. professor west knew this and refused to let me make up the quiz. i got a c solely for missing one assignment due to a serious illness.
If you are thinking of taking this class because you think it will be an easy A DO NOT DO IT. There is a big jump between what is taught in class and what you are expected to do on the assignments. The content is not simple by any means. Dr. West himself is nice and easily accessible but this is a difficult class.
West has a bad rep because of a cheating scandal that happened last year. But class is very easy, there are weekly assignments that take maybe 20 minutes. Tests are take home and pretty straight forward. He is big on cheating so don't cheat. Class is interesting and there are a lot group assignments so try to get a good group.
Don't listen to the bad reviews, this guy is awesome. Super nice, smart, really passionate about his subject and makes lectures actually fun to go to. Plus the class is an easy A if you do the assignments.
Great professor, really makes class interesting! There are several reviews saying one quiz brought them down to a B or C - don't trust them, these are people who repeatedly failed to get an 80% on a take-home quiz/exam, with access to all class resources and multiple attempts (!). He even tells you what you got wrong the first time. Take this class
Many people deride West for his insistence on not cheating, and though I have some reservations about his grading scale, I ultimately found the class enjoyable and not very difficult. He changes the way you think about science. You just have to actually think, pay attention, listen, etc.
West's lectures are interesting, but the grading scheme of the class is terrible. A % point of a grade can take you from an A to a B. The other lectures in this class are not interesting, but the professors are nice. The learning is very superficial, which is okay because it's not supposed to be an intensive science class.
Mix feelings about the class and professor. Grading system really made me despise the class, it's complicated for no reason and you need to understand how it works in order to pass. Lectures are fine, slides are hard to understand but the other two professor's slides/lecturing was better.
Homework is easy if you attend the lecture. Group projects were fine and could be completed within an hour. The rubric is unnecessarily complicated but gives you a clear amount of work for each letter grade. Both exams require you to broaden your thinking. Having 3 diff profs is hard as you have to adjust to different teaching styles over the sem.
Understandable content that's accessible outside of class, manageable workload. Attendance unnecessary but helpful. The biggest obstacle in this course is West; he can be rude/condescending. He's very set on finding cheaters, sometimes where there are none, and it can feel like he enjoys having sway over our grades more than teaching the material.
this course is popular because it i s considered a science class for liberal arts kids, don't listen. while the science itself is easy, the professor will make learning it unnecessarily difficult and know that even though the tests are online, the professor is paranoid about cheating. it's not an easy A class, so register at your own risk
Professor West was actually a pretty good professor and made the class understandable and interesting with his lecture slides and methods of explaining. He does however take academic misconduct very seriously and there have been a few incidents so keep that in mind.
Class is pretty basic but he tries to complicate it. Is out to catch you cheating at every single juncture, so just don't. Make sure to do well on the first exam, if not you literally can't get a A or B. Path to getting an A is very simple, just do the work. Make sure you pick a good group because I hear stories of groups that screw people over.
if you put enough effort into his class(study every now and then) it shouldn't prove too difficult. BUT, if he catches you cheating no matter if it's on a test or just a poll everywhere he WILL make your life a living hell. TLDR; don't cheat cuz he cracks down on you too hard
Prof. West isn't a bad lecturer, and the class doesn't have a lot of work, but he felt very condescending in general and overly paranoid about academic integrity. The grading scheme is very different. He teaches the concepts but not how to apply them, which he expects you to just magically understand on the tests. Final allows for create freedom
Prof West is actually bizarre. Big Bang wasn't that bad...sometimes even interesting and overall it was never a stress but just such a weird vibe. Prof West is angry and just odd. However, many found him funny and sometimes the lectures are interesting but you do not need to listen. Easy A but I have to assume there is something better out there.
This man is awesome. DO NOT be dissuade by the many negative reviews, that was just about a cheating scandal when... many people got caught for cheating. I love him, he's a classic STEM man, but responds to emails within minutes, and his passion for what he's teaching is infectious. Two exams, one open-notes, one final project. Perfect for anyone.
West isn't a bad lecturer and his astronomy portion of the course has interesting content. The grading for the class is very complicated, and if you do pass the first midterm exam then you cannot get an A in the course. The exams, however, are relatively easy and you can even do exam corrections to get points back.
He is not respectful towards his students and he has unreasonable expectations for each student. This feels like a weed-out class even though almost everyone is taking this class to fulfill the natural science requirement. The tests I found were very difficult, and the grading scheme is unreasonably difficult to understand. Do not take this class.
He's so nice and clearly cares about what he's teaching. It easy to get an A, you only need to get above an 80% on all assignments, so just do the work assigned and you'll do well. The first test was a little difficult but the second wasn't hard as it was take home. Plus, you get retakes if you don't get an 80%. Highly recommend for science credit.
Not worth dealing with this guy just for a science credit. As someone who got As in all my AP science classes in high school, this class is unnecessarily complicated because of Professor West's grading system. I know people in this class who got Bs and Cs doing basically the same work I did. If there's another option, definitely take it.
I enjoyed Big Bang to Humankind with Prof. West. There are very few homework assignments, and I personally enjoyed working in a group for many of them. The tests are hard, so you'll have to study for them, but I wouldn't say they're unreasonable. I appreciated that Prof. West made the lectures interesting and relevant.
I enjoyed Big Bang to Humankind with Prof. West. He gave very few homework assignments, and I personally enjoyed working in a group for many of them. His tests are hard, so you'll have to study for them, but I wouldn't say they're unreasonable. I appreciated that Prof. West made the lectures interesting and relevant.
Please ignore the negative reviews. If you are an attentive student, you will 100% get an A in this class. The grading scheme is a bit hard to understand at first, and West comes across intimidating at first, but I loved him so much by the end and actually learned a lot. He's strict about cheating, so don't cheat, but otherwise a great guy. Loved.
Grading system is awful
West is a great guy and a passionate professor. His emphasis on cheating is honestly really annoying for people who don't cheat. His lectures are light and tests can be corrected, but they were honestly way more difficult than I was anticipating. His grading scheme seems pretty unnecessary but it's not that bad and probably is beneficial.
Avoid if you can. All he talks about is cheating- it's honestly so annoying. His grading scheme makes 0 sense... weirdest grading I have ever seen. He comes across very arrogant and rude at times. Really did not enjoy his class at all. Even though I got an A, I wish I spared myself the agony from this NON-MAJORS course.
West plays the "nice guy" by saying "he hates grades".. but, in reality his exams are extremely involved and have nothing to do with the surface level material he teaches. It is really hard to keep track of grades as canvas is a mess, it just says 0% until final grades are made... It is not worth the hours upon hours you will dedicate.
He claims BBtHK is designed for non-stem students yet makes the exams impossible (which ruins the entire class), filling them with trick questions. Purposefully makes traps to catch students cheating and is overall insufferable. The only thing bigger than the universe is this mans ego.
The Class is very easy, getting an A will not require you to do a lot of work. Dr. West himself is just unnecessarily annoying, making things slightly more difficult than they need to be.
This class was okay overall. Definitely an easy science credit. Beware of the test and the test rewrites because he has a horrible grading scale and it makes things weirdly difficult. Him as a teacher? Ehhh... I learned about astronomy I guess. But as a person, he doesn't treat students with respect and is just overall annoying. Wouldn't recommend.
I honestly dont understand why i see so many negative comments - Dr.West is very passionate about what he is teaching, and it's definitely an easy A as long as you wanna get good grades. The grading scheme is clear and ur offered tons of opportunities to boost/revise ur grades.
Overall, really nice guy. Class is not that difficult, and lectures are somewhat interesting. Please don't cheat in any regard, he will catch you.
Personality-wise, he's not bad. Attendance matters to him, and his grading system, though confusing, favors those who like hw/projects> tests. We have 1 in-person and 1 online test, with a final project. Getting a high grade on the in-person test is unlikely without test corrections and the tests often contain trick questions. I liked BBTHK
Super interesting lecturer and filled with passion. The class is not the free A that people expect, but if you pay attention in lecture, take good notes, and go to the crash course sessions you will do fine on the tests. Lots of group work and he definitely finds ways to take away points for skipping class. He's a good teacher but a tad abrasive.
Unique grading system but not the easy A it seems to be. Entire grade was bumped down to an A- because my solo final project "didn't show enough effort" despite being an honest amount of work. If you know you'll be busy come finals, take this class another semester. Also, do the project in a group so you have a larger quantity of work to show him.
I was told this was an "easy" science class at Tufts, but it has proven to be a lot of work with confusing content. The Proffesor is very knowledgable and clearly likes the subject he teaches, but I would not recommend taking this class unless you are genuinely interested in the solar system
The grading on the final project is very bad
Would not be flexible with grading but would say that he cared about his students' learning and didn't want them to worry about their grades.... get out while you can.
A lot ALOT ALOT of content, don't recommend if you are not interested in science tbh
He's a great person but a terrible professor. He uses his own grading scale, which is fairly easy to follow and getting an A isn't difficult. But his tests are TERRIBLE. He claims he's testing your ability to apply what you've learned to real scenarios, but really he just tries to trip you up on wording and makes the questions extremely confusing.
DONT LISTEN TO THE PICKY PEOPLE- his class is so chill and theres like 20 mins of hw a week and you have to read like maybe 2 chapters of a book- exams are not that bad- you need an 80 for an a and his grading system is super chill- you can extend work 3 times if needed
Dr West is awesome - he's super passionate and his lectures are always interesting. He uses standard based grading so it's VERY easy to get an A if you put in any ounce of effort and actually study for the two exams - the second one is also take home and open note so it's super light. Homework also takes like max 30 minutes a week.
people are actually so mean for no reason Dr west is a great professor and this class is so manageable! he cares a lot and is willing to help. He makes it so easy to suceed if you put in just a little effort, so obviously he gets upset when people cheat because theres actually no reason to. highly recomend, especially if youre a freshman
He is one of the best professors I have ever had! He clearly is passionate about what he teaches and he cares so much about his students. Don't listen to the negative reviews. He truly is amazing!
very light class. barely any homework, although the first exam needs some studying. The second is takehome. Very interesting lectures.
I took big bang with Dr. West this semester, looking to just get my science credit out of the way. clearly a very smart guy and passionate about astronomy, but his grading is weird. tests are really difficult so make sure to study. his lectures are pretty interesting so they're worth attending.
Extremely easy A, pretty much based off of completion. Barely any homework, but first exam needs some studying. People who are complaining just expected to do no work for an A. Final project is also not as bad as people say. Just show significant effort and make it look pretty and you can get an A+. Dr. West is very knowledgeable and interesting.
He is a great lecturer and SO passionate. If you go to lectures, do homework, and overall just put in effort, you will get an A. The astro stuff we learned was fascinating.
Andrew West is a great person!!! He wants to see his students succeed. Two tests with options to retake and one final project.
Please give Prof West a chance. I'm so bad at science and mustered up an A in this class. His grading rubric is confusing, but if you learn it it's actually great. Grace periods for missed assignments and so many opportunities to get your grade up. The first exam is rough but the second is take-home. Plus, a project for the final exam.
He's a good and, at times, silly professor. His grading is odd, but you'll get used to it. Everything depends on the final project, but the extremely negative reviews don't make sense. take his astronomy course, he's very passionate.
literally the best- big bang is great if u arent a science person
Professor West has a unique grading system, but engaging with it can pay off. Use resources like unstuck study alongside the textbook to prepare for the tricky exams. Attend class, as participation is key. Overall, the workload is manageable if you put in the effort.
I'm not sure why Dr. West has such bad reviews—Big Bang's been very interesting, Dr. West's section was presented enthusiastically and generally in a orderly way. Good grades do take work and time, but if you put in the time/effort you *will* get a good grade, and it's easy to get regraded. The grading structure is abnormal but very reasonable.
You can easily do well in this class, but there's not a lot of motivation to do so. His incredibly sassy and passive aggressive comments create a classroom of staring at your computer while being confused. Isn't as easy of as a class as you may think. Is more interested in catching students cheating rather than teaching!
It's an exciting class! You can tell he's interested in what he's teaching. The exams can be challenging since he creates questions that make you understand how the materials work together.
Loved Big Bang. Grading scheme is a little confusing, but if you complete a majority of the assignments you will get an A. Astronomy unit was my absolute favorite, and I enjoyed the lecture style. He is very flexible with meeting outside of class and is receptive to feedback.
Not an easy A if that's what you're looking for. The work is easy enough to do if you are kind of sort of paying attention, but it is a LOT of work. Let's just say as a non stem major this course did not make me like science more
I know it gets a bad rep, but honestly I enjoyed the course. As a non-stem major, I found the content easy to follow and the grading system to be reasonable. Dr. West was easy to contact outside of class, and talking to him will help you understand what is expected of you and how to succeed in his course. However, be prepared for a lot of work!
Class material was really easy to understand as a non-STEM major, Professor West is just difficult and cantankerous. Always wants us to ask questions and go to office hours, but seems super annoyed when we actually do. The guest lectures were the only part that made this class enjoyable.
He was a really great professor and I thought the class was super interesting as a non-STEM person. The grading was a little weird but it was easy to get an A if you do everything.
Class isn't crazy hard. I think that prof west has a very negative view of non-STEM kids and is constantly saying things to suggest that we wouldn't be doing well in a traditional STEM course. I j think how he speaks to students unprofessional and was enough to make me feel terrible about myself. If you want an easy STEM class, take dinosaurs.
Do not take Big Bang. West should not claim to teach a class that is friendly to humanities students and proceeds to talk down to them and constantly patronizes them. His grading scale is not clear at all (though it seems to be on the surface) and students get penalized for revising their exams. Do not take Big Bang.
He seems like a good teacher at first until you realize that he is incredibly snarky and sarcastic and likes to passive aggressively dish out digs at students in lecture. His grading scheme is easy enough but ridiculously scattered and hard to keep track of. All in all, if you want an easy science class for requirements, spare yourself this class.
Relatively easy to get an A but he's just a bad teacher. Snarky and accuses everyone and their mother of cheating if you use any background/high school chem knowledge. Lotsssss of group projects so choose your group wisely!! Grading schema is so confusing and unnecessary. Listen to the reviews and take a different class for a science credit!
Not sure why his rating is so low. Yes, grading criteria still makes no sense to me, decent amount of busywork, and tests were a bit difficult. However, it's not hard to get an A and I found Professor West to be very engaging for someone who dislikes STEM. Definitely learned a lot and enjoyed speaking to him outside of class, too.
He clearly loves what he teaches and is always enthusiastic in lectures. Grading is a bit strange, but if you do all the work (and do it well) you get an A. Tests are pretty tough, though if you pay attention in class and do all the homework they're very doable. Don't let his ratings turn you away from his class, he's an overall great professor.
Dr. West wants to share his knowledge with everyone and I respect that. I'm not sure how I loves the grading scale or his attitude at times- but overall, BBtHK was a decent class with a passionate professor.
The class is interesting and he seems to be nice but he kinda treats you like you're 10. It's a stem class for non-stem majors and he really acts like it. He is a bit elitist about being a stem person. His grading system is stupid I hate it so much it only makes the class harder.
I got no credit on an exam because of a typo so take that as you will in the tough grading department. If you hate science as much as I do, this class is HARD.
While the class is not too intense most of the time, the exams are a bit rough. He can be snarky in answering students questions. The biggest issue is the chemistry unit and its written exam. The test is long, hard, and pointlessly tedious, making you critique AI's answers to all of these application questions in addition to answering them.
It's Big Bang. If you do the work, you do well. Some concepts seemed a little too macro for the class and I still struggled with them by the tests. Grading of the projects felt incredibly arbitrary though.
Dr West is the most EGOTISTICAL grown up nerd I have ever met the equivalent someone who was unhappy their entire life so he feels superior over college kids. He is insane and prays on his students downfall by setting things up for us to fail. Getting a good grade is not too hard, the hardest part is his lectures and listening to his voice.
so baddddd!!!
Don't take this class expecting to do no work, but with minimal effort it's an easy A. West is nice if you show interest. He's strict about catching cheating, so don't try it. Exams can be tough, but you only need above an 80 on one and above a 50 on the other to get an A. Honestly over-hated class.
I am glad i disregarded the negative reviews for Dr. West. He has turned out to be my favorite professor this semester, he's no nice and cares about students. lectures are amazing, the exams and homework are not too difficult as long as you study and care about the class. He gives lots of mercy allowing exam revisions, and late work submissions. T
As someone who takes other science lecture classes, his lectures were overall interesting and engaging. The class material is fun and you can tell he is genuinely passionate about the subject. He was also very understanding when I had a medical issue that impacted my class attendance. His grading system is unique but simple.
Well he clearly get's a bad rep, but I think Dr. West is a super caring and knowledgable individual that really wants you to understand and do well in the class. People say he's sassy, but I think that comes from him trying to be playful. His lectures were super interesting and he cares a lot. It's SUPER easy to get an A if you just do the work.
I really loved Dr. West in Big Bang. His lectures were incredibly interesting, he really engaged with his students in and out of the classroom. He added office hours so everyone could attend and ask questions. While his grading criteria is a little confusing, it's not hard to get an A in his class if you put in a little effort. Tests weren't bad.
Great class overall, even for it being the first year his Project Apollo class has been taught. He was always interested in student insight and feedback. The labs and projects were all very insightful. You can really get a lot out of this class if you're interested in NASA/the Moon or just want to learn more about space!
One of the worst classes to take for the science requirement. Although, there's just 1 in class exam the homework assigned is unrealistic and unnecessary. The grading criteria is very vague and and hard to understand. The take home exam is a scam because he makes you use AI just for the sake of it- answers have to be self written. Highly AVOIDABLE!
If you do what you are supposed to do an A is very possible, although, chem section of class is horrendous. He is very willing to help if you try, if not, he can be quite stubborn. Overall, not a bad a science credit.
