This guy is a great professor. He was very clear and actually gave me an interest in History. Something I didn't have before. He did a 'joke of the day' to get things rolling and adds sense of humor and practicality to the class. A++

Dr. Wiest is probably one of the most knowledgable military historians in the field. I had a guided readings course under him and our discussions were excellent. His Vietnam course is the best in the University, bar none.

Very clear lectures, but very bad sense of humor.

Absolutely fantastic. Dr. Wiest is highly recommended-class is interesting and fun. Attendance is not mandatory but you will want to be there. Test material comes primarily from lecture, so take good notes and be prepared to study. As long as you pay attention and study a little before each test, you'll do fine. Definitely take him if you can!

Andrew Wiest is without a doubt the best professor I have had so far at Southern Miss. He makes one of the most boring subjects imaginable extremely interesting. He has a great sense of humor that makes the class that much more enjoyable. His class is somewhat difficult and requires a great deal of studying, but it is definitely worth it. Amazing!

Best teacher I have ever had. I had him for 101 and decided to take his Vietnam class as an elective just because I liked his teaching style so much. Best class I have ever taken. If you thought history was boring, think again, and take one of his classes.

He makes everything much more interesting than some other HIS teachers. type every word, try to get test files, and use good vocabulary in the papers. Show up for class, other notes prob. won't make sense. Sit in front and ask him questions so he knows who you are. Also, if the TAs greade to hard he might fix your grade. TAs are ridiculous!

He tells a few jokes before every lecture to loosen the students up. He is a great history teacher, and actually made me interested in history a little bit, because I absolutely hate history. The exams are a mix of mult. choice, short essays, essay, and fill in the blank, much like all other history exams. They are not easy either.

He is brilliant and an expert in History. His tests are very difficult and nearly impossible to pass if you don't study.. and study HARD.

Dr. Wiest is great. I've never been a fan of history but he has changed me. No matter what, I could't bring myself to skip his class because it was so interesting. He's very nice and helpful. It's important to take GOOD NOTES because anything he says during lecture (unless preceded by "you don't have to remember this") is fair game for his exams.

You must study extremely hard to pass his tests. The class is interesting but you have to take good notes. There are three test that make up 90% of your grade so those are extremely important to do well on.

Fantastic teacher. Has a ton of stories and tells the story of history and fascinating way. Better focus in class because it is lecture based. Study for tests with your lecture notes and you'll do well! I only used one of the two books for the class.

I took him for 101 and 102. I love the way he teaches. Makes it easy to understand and pay attention because he makes it interesting and funny. Take good notes and study and you'll do fine. The TA's will murder your papers but he will go against them if you really deserved better. And they barely count for anything.

His class was very interesting, he makes you care about what he's talking about. I didn't mind waking up to go to the class at all, because all you do is take notes as quickly as you can as he speaks. There are only three exams, and you have to be willing to STUDYSTUDYSTUDY. And The history work book is all I needed, not the smaller one.

Dr. Weist puts history into simple, modern day terms that literally anyone can understand. Tests and essays are difficult but if you study hard on the tests and put effort into the essays you will do good. Show up to class and take good notes. Don't buy the textbook, you will never touch it.

Dr. Wiest is by far the best professor I have had in my time at USM. He has very intriguing lectures, answers many questions in class, has clear cut assignments, and has a good sense of humor. I took him for both introductory courses which influenced me to change my major to History. Great Professor and I would recommend him to anyone.

Possibly the best history professor at USM, Dr. Wiest knows his stuff and how to teach it. He is an awesome guy who can make even a person who doesn't care about history enjoy his class. I highly recommend taking any of his classes period. Oh, did I mention he's a drummer in a rock band?

Honors is more difficult. No exams, just several papers to write. Did not see the hype in his class, but he was an overall funny guy. Not a history person? Don't take his honors class. Everyone in there ends up with a B and an A if you really put in the effort.

I LOVED taking this man's class! His assignments weren't too hard and he's HILARIOUS! The jokes he tells are pretty bad but when he isn't trying to be funny he actually is! Buy The Boys of '67 it's a mandatory! He'll know if you didn't, he wrote it. Loved meeting the vets he wrote about! Good class, don't skip, notes are ESSENTIAL to passing!

His TA's are harder than he is. He is a wonderful teacher but you have to listen to him or else you will have no clue what to do on the test.

Best history professor to have! If you don't go to class you probably won't pass because he goes over SO MUCH during one lecture. He made learning history very enjoyable. I actually looked forward to going to his class! Highly recommend Dr. Wiest.

This class was VERY hard, but learned so much. Make sure your grammar is on point for the essays. Lots of people have old tests of his.. mostly sorority girls, BUT beware he changes them up (as he should you cheaters) overall, he really is great!

Great lectures, super funny. Had to do 4 papers on different books so, get ready to read. Tough grader but, notices improvement and grades accordingly. Lots of information covered. Tests were purely essay and difficult

I have never had a good history teacher, and I thought history was boring. With him teaching the class, he completely changed my mind. I actually enjoyed the class and wish I would have gotten to take him for history 102.

Makes History interesting. Rather than just spitting out facts, he tells stories to make the material much easier to remember. He really cares about his students. He gives 3 essay assignments (with one drop grade essay) and 3 tests.

Dr. Wiest is such an amazing professor! I am taking him right now for my Honors College class and absolutely love going to class. He has a humorous personality and makes the subject matter so interesting. You cannot go wrong with this professor!

Andrew Wiest is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He is extremely relatable and makes everything understandable. He teaches with stories that are easy to remember and only the material he feels important. He's really a cool guy. The test are relatively difficult so study as you go along the chapter and really pay attention in class.

Honestly my favorite professor yet. Hilarious dude that actually made history so easy for me. The tests aren't hard and there are only a few assignments in the class. The assignments and the tests aren't difficult at all, so as long as you get grades on those, you're golden. Wish all my professors were as great at communicating topics so easily.

If you are not an auditory learner, I do not recommend taking him. As long as you attend class and complete the study guides you will do fine.

I love this professor!!! He gives amazing lectures that never get boring and assigns a fair amount of work other than essays that aren't tedious. However, he relies heavily on his TAs for grading so for one class you may get great grades, then the TAs switch and so does the type of grading.

Dr Wiest was amazing! Hes funny, and he understands being a student in college, therefore hes very lenient with his class. He does accept late work, even for tests! He gives extra credit, and the lectures are fun to watch, even if you dont enjoy history. His tests were essay based, but they were pretty easy. If you want a smooth ride, take him!

The best professor at USM, hands down. If you come to class and take notes, youre guaranteeing yourself an A. He gives study guides and if its not on there, it wont be on the test. He has taught me in 2019 and my dad in the 90s (but hes not that old!) and we have both agreed he has been our favorite professor EVER!

A typical class consists of him going over a Powerpoint. It is lecture heavy. The class consists of 3 test, 3 assignment, and one extra credit assignment. If you do the work you will likely succeed in his class. He also posts every PowerPoint online, so if you miss a class it is easy to make up. Also, he gives you study guides before every test.

He is a great professor who has an infectious passion. I love history so maybe I am a bit biased, but his class was amazing. He knows what he's talking about and makes it enjoyable. His TAs are a bit unnecessarily critical with their grading but besides that, it is a great time.

BEST TEACHER. His lectures are hilarious and engaging and usually gives out extra credit in his class. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about him I HIGHLY recommend him as a teacher. The only issue is the TA's the rubrics arent given so instructions are unclear but other than that is you study you will do great!

He is a great professor; very personable. He was very clear about what he wanted out of assignments. I like how he does tests - he allows you to look at notes for a few minutes. I actually studied and remembered a lot more in trying to prepare notes for quick use in those few minutes than I would have otherwise. Well played, sir.

suuper chill dude, funny guy, will give you 8 unexcused absences, allows AI for his writing assignments, gives zero Fs, class kinda packed but its cuz hes a good prof, his tests are nice he gives 15 mins of cheating time, would take again live laugh love prof wiest

Honestly, this professor is just a chill guy. He gives zero F's if you don't agree or believe that half of the topics discussed are true or a bunch of BS, just turn in the work and pass. He also gives 15 minutes of legal cheating for the exams, including the final. He gives 8 skips to class, it's nothing to be worried about if you take his class.

Gives you between 12-15 minutes of open book time during tests.

He was a good professor for a history course. He tries to be relatable and hilarious during his lectures. The only thing I would say ab his class is to study for his tests because his tests are in depth than I expected. But overall he was great. Highly recommend.
