He's a little dry sometimes, but a good prof.
Real nice guy!
One of the best profs in Geography department. Passionate about subject material. Knowledgable, yet humble. Great field trips. I wish he did a bit more lecturing in this class; the student powerpoints got a bit old after awhile.
One of Western's best
The best prof in Huxley. I've had Env Science, Planning, Policy, Education, and Geography classes. Usually the best classes are science classes, but Bach is the exception in Geography. You really learn a lot, and he knows much and is a good scientist.
Overrated as a prof. Just coz he takes students on fun field trips doesn't make him a good prof. Climate-Biophys was an utter waste of time, he doesn't teach anything at all. Rumor has it he knows a lot, I haven't seen it and I've had 3 classes now.
The field trips we go on are fun and fair amount of learning goes on. My 1st class with him I wasn't impressed, he grew on me and then i took the Advanced Soils class. He was gone for about 2 wks, he mainly covered material he presented in previous classes, A little to laid back. There is potential for the soils class to be learning experience.
Very interesting professor. He really knows the information. He was a little disorganized at times, but other than that one of the best profs I've had.
Andy is a wealth of information, but seems bored by teaching and unwilling to take time to pull it together and point out the connections between topics. He puts alot of info out there, but his laid back style makes it seem like he doesn't care whether you learn anything. Frustrating -I don't think he encourages students to really learn and engage.
Great guy. Class was really laid back and productive at the same time. He wrote the book you use, and it's easy to follow along. Map exercising aren't difficult at all. I learned a lot about how to read, understand, and use maps. There's a lot more to them than you think.
If you do not get an A in his classes you are an idiot, or just skip too much. If you go you get an A, pure and simple.
Not my favorite professor, but he's overall a good teacher. I think someone who loves Geography would enjoy him more, but as someone just looking for a GUR he certainly wasn't bad. Easy class to get a decent grade in, if you show to class and labs.
Andy is super nice and funny, if you read the book and attend class you'll do fine and you learn a lot. i took climatology with him and i liked it
Great Prof! Exams are not difficult, it's easy to get a B in this class, with a little effort you can get an A. Very interested in the subject and enthusiastic. He keeps the subject matter very interesting. Take him if you get the chance.
Bach is one of the best professors I've ever had! He's great! Take any class with him!
Funny teacher, does a great job explaining most of the things he assigns in the book so that you don't always have to read what he assigns. Rarely assigns more than 20 pages of reading, and you always have 2 days to do it (in EGEO 203).
He was great. I enjoyed the class and learned a lot about the Geography of Whatcom County. For me, mastering the study guide was key for an A. He uses 10% interval grading. 89.9%=B and 90.1%=A. etc. NO+-Don't let that happen to you. Take every lab and every test seriously. Depending on your TA for lab the difficulty can vary. Overall he was great.
Great Lecturer, never wondered when class would end- I was actively engaged in class for the full hour. Awesome guy.
Took Many classes from Andy and they were all great! The only class (Climate) I struggled with he was always there to help whenever I needed to come in. By far the best prof in Geography dept.
Andy is amazing. Take a class with him...he's one of the best professors at Western.
Andy Bach is probably one of the most unfair graders I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. He only curves test for those people who got 87 and up for A's. The rest are basically grades. 100 question exams in 50 minutes makes it absolutely ridiculous that you have to rush through the exam. Labs are not that hard but are mandatory. TAKE PHYSICS INSTEAD
I've taken a plethora of classes with Andy, and I must say he is far and away the best professor at Huxley. It really doesn't matter what class you take with him, it'll be a hoot and well worth your time.
Bach knows what he is doing and is enthusiastic about the subject. Sure, the tests are long, but if you study the material it should be no problem. Labs are very straightforward. A great class to fulfill the lab GUR!
Bach is one of the best professors on campus. He is easy to understand, makes his tests based almost entirely on the material he covers in class, and gives clear information on his slides. He is fun to talk to and down to earth.
My only problem with Andy was that he wasn't very helpful when I had trouble with something. He also didn't seem like a very fair grader to me.
Andy is the man, very interactive full of energy even when he looks tired, seems very passionate with his work and works hard to answer your questions and really wants you to understand the concepts, very enjoyable class, holds your attention pretty well and he makes it clear that you can always come to his office or lab teachers office for help :)
Interesting lectures, but tests are unfair compared to what he taught in class. He promises, "You don't need to know this for the exam," and then that very question shows up on the test. Very specific questions with relatively broad explanations in class on the exam as well. His exams hurt my GPA. I wouldn't recommend it for a GUR.
Avoid this class if not in your major. He's a nice guy but doesn't teach the material well enough to do well on tests. The exams are so much harder than they should be and half the info on them seems completely foreign to what was taught in class. However, lab is super easy. He gives study guides and review sessions.
Straight forward. Main concepts from powerpoints and textbook are simple enough to study
Great professor. Tests are from the lecture, lecture slides are online for study. There were never any surprises on the tests. He is funny and approachable. He readily admits when he doesn't know something, and then encourages you to find out the answer. He is passionate and knowledgeable in his field. One of my favorite professors by far.
Andy's a great professor, easygoing but on point with his lecture. Pretty funny, sometimes get's out of breath during lecture, he'll also try to jump up projector screen to point out things on printers. (about 1 foot of air.) Loves extra questions, conversations after class, very knowledgeable. Studies Glaciation.
By far the best professor I have had at Western. Inspirational, passionate and interesting. he will send us emails saying things like "couldn't help but letting you guys know about the storm outside right now- looks like a warm front, etc." its great, and so refreshing to have a professor who genuinely loves what he does.
Awesome prof! Wasn't too into geography going in but Dr. Bach made the subject interesting with engaging lectures. Goes out of his way to clarify major concepts. Genuinely loves what he does. If you have the chance take a class with him.
No surprises on exams and really helpful lectures. Textbook isn't really required but is a good idea to get a better understanding. All powerpoints are posted online. Not a particularly difficult class if you show up and know most of the material.
Bach is a great dude! His class is pretty simple and attendance isn't mandatory. As long as you review his powerpoints, attend lab and read you'll do completely fine on his tests!
Made all the lectures really fun!! Didn't know anything about geography going in but by the end I was super into it. Straightforward tests. If you study the material and pay attention in class, you'll do well. Some of the information on tests was in the lectures but not the powerpoints/reading.
Funny teacher and a chill classroom atmosphere. Easy grader and little homework.
Dr. Bach is awesome! Passionate about the subject, makes lectures very interesting. The material is tough but tests follow exactly what was covered in class. I only used the textbook once. Show up and pay attention to the material he covers and you'll do fine. Highly recommend him as a professor!
Professor Bach is really well versed and passionate about his subject and it shows. His lectures are interesting, not hard to follow, and digestible. Do the required textbook readings in addition, study for the tests and you'll be fine. He's a really nice guy.
Andy is really interesting and he cares a lot about the material. He also doesn't just sit and lecture at you. He moves around and gets very interactive even when the material can be boring.
All of Andy's classes are great. He is always available for extra help. He is enthusiastic about all the subjects he teaches and makes class less boring.
Exams are easy to study and prepare for because he tests on what he lectures on and hosts study sessions a few days beforehand. Exams themselves do require you to understand the content of the class, and you should really study beforehand. But they aren't so hard that they will destroy your grade. Very friendly and approachable.
Andy is an amazing teacher and soils are his expertise, so he's a great teacher for the class. There are 3 exams, all short answer questions, which are fairly difficult and require a lot of studying and memorization. Also, there are 3 writing assignments, so only 6 graded things total. Definitely stay on top of things.
This is a great professor to go talk to outside of class. He makes geographical studies extremely interesting because he genuinely enjoys teaching. Attendance is not really required and I never opened the textbook.
I really enjoyed Andy's lectures. He is very passionate about the material. The difficultly isn't too bad and the labs are fairly simple. However, since you are only graded on a few things, it can wreck your grade. I got 95-100% on everything except one test where I got a 75 (rough), and my grade really suffered. Interesting & only 50min, good GUR
Andy is an awesome professor. He is clearly very passionate about what he teaches and he makes lecture interesting. He definitely knows what he is talking about! If you plan to show up to lecture, there is no point in buying the textbook. He gives you all the info you need to pass the tests. Labs are extremely easy, you just have to show up.
Do not buy the textbook if you plan on going to all the classes. The labs were a joke and super easy and saved my grade. Exams are hard but memorize the essay question on the review sheets because they were identical on the first 2 exams. Andy is a good teacher but you realize after 2 weeks that going to class is pointless.
Very engaging lectures and taught the material effectively. Learned a great deal about the world and its characteristics. Requires lab session too. Study for the exams by reviewing the posted slides and taking good notes. He basically tells you what will be on the exams. Highly recommend.
Andy is great! I wouldn't bother even buying the textbook, we never used it. Everything is based off of his powerpoints, which are easy to use to study for exams. Mountain geography is awesome! super fun to learn, definitely recommend taking it!
I've taken ENVS 203, 397C, and 327 with Andy, and am planning on taking 427 with him as well. He is so great! Concepts are easy to learn, exams are not very difficult, and he always responds to emails and enjoys answering questions. Definitely recommend!
This was my 2nd class with Andy and I enjoyed it. He is very passionate about soils and knows what he is talking about. Going to class helps, but he puts his lecture slides online and all the important things are on the slides. Exams are based off of study guides which are very helpful. Grades were based off of 2 exams and 2 hw assignments.
Andy is probably the best professor I have had at WWU! He is clearly so passionate about his field which makes the lectures really easy to pay attention to. He is a really interactive style of teaching, not in a participation way but more in how he jumps around the room and makes examples in the space around us that really makes the concepts stick.
Andy is hilarious, brilliant, and cares about the earth and students. If I could take every class he teaches I would. You won't regret a class with him if you are present in his lectures!
Was hesitant to take this class but I'm glad i did. Andy is probably the most passionate prof ive ever met, he makes GEO seem very interesting. You CAN NOT skip any labs or your grade will plumet, but theres almost no homework and if you show up you'll pass.
Andy is a great guy, makes a subject I find highly boring very interesting. He notices when students care and perform well, he pulled me aside to encourage me to take one of his other classes without ever introducing myself or talking to him. I took his summer class, no labs and 3 exams. Lovely guy and I hope to take another class with him.
Andy's courses are typically graded by three exams (non cumulative, short essay response) and a couple assignments. Lectures will cover all material on exams, and skipping class is not reccomended as lecture slides do not always have words/info (lots of pictures). Andy typically releases a study guide before all exams that is faithful to the exam.
Great prof. Easy A. I didnt need to read the textbook and his tests were straightforward. He can make the class laugh and wants students to learn. Compared to other stem courses the class material isnt difficult. It was good to go to lecture to learn the material. Gives good study guides.
I had Andy for ENVS203 during Covid and he was just about the most understanding and realistic professor I could have asked for in times like these. I really hope I get to take more classes in person with Andy because if he is anything like he was this quarter when classes are normal then he seems like a great prof and a super cool guy.
Dr. Bach was the most understanding prof i've had this quarter (Spring 2020)! He would always send us messages reminding us that he was there to support us. The class/tests and labs were very straight forward! Solid choice.
Took Envs 203 with him during Covid spring quarter, and absolutely LOVED it. It was a shame that I couldnt get to experience Andy and his class in a normal setting. Super caring professor, always did whatever he could to make us feel less stressed about current events and provided lots of leniency when it came to due dates and such. Great class!
An easy asynchronous course. The only assignments are weekly labs and quizzes that are all due by end of the quarter. He has TAs that provide step by step instructions on how to do the labs and he does prerecorded lectures for the quizzes. He seems like a very kind man IRL, shame I only had him for online because I hear he does field trips preCOVID
TAKEN ONLINE! But Dr. Bach has so much passion for science and knows so much, so helpful outside of class and such interesting topics. He made no strict deadlines due to covid and work at your own pace. I love this class so much and would recommend anything by him- 10/10.
I've had two online classes with Professor Bach: ENVS 397C, and ENVS 327. Both classes were taught in the same format: two or three EXCELLENT PowerPoint lectures per week, followed by a weekly open-book quiz. Even though I was able to access the lectures while taking the quiz, I still feel like I've learned more from these classes than any others.
Labs are fun!
I can't speak for the in-person experience of this class, but online it has been very easy. Although it is easy, I also have learned ALOT from this class, and its super interesting! Only graded assignments are weekly open-book quizzes. Professor Bach is very good at getting back to emails and gives very good feedback when you miss points. Recommend
I love Andy! He's been an amazing Prof through Covid times. He cares about his students, and he's really funny. This class was asynchronous, and go-at-your-own-pace. Andy wants to help you learn, and he's made it clear that he's open for communication. I'd take any class taught by him, he makes topics that could be super dry into exciting lectures!
I loved professor Bach. He's very intelligent and passionate about the courses he teaches. He's also understanding! Every week he'll send out little weather updates and it's just cool how much he cares. One of the best profs at WWU.
For a professor teaching during a pandemic he can be inflexible. He expects you to remember a lot before each test, and you cannot use notes. You DO need to read the textbook, and the lecture slides are text heavy to the point that they are overwhelming. If you fall behind don't even think about trying to catch up or ask for help.
His lectures tend to be long and monotone which makes them hard to listen to. And the ppt slides are kind of messy at times, with too many pictures or text. There was a lot to learn, but it was a relatively easy class, especially if you have taken physics or geology classes in the past (I didn't though and still got an A).
The climatology class is only based on 3 exams, so there is no room for error. Andy is highly respectable and he really cares about his students, especially through this pandemic. This class is kinda like a review from physical geography.
Very solid prof. Gives clear instructions and is accessible outside of class. I look forward to taking the soil classes with him next Winter and Spring.
Dr. Bach is a fun, charismatic Professor that really knows hiss stuff; I thoroughly enjoyed his course, and would take more classes from him in the future. On the contrary, I felt like his lessons were jam packed with info, making it tough to absorb every detail that he covers. He was flexible, and the labs are actually quite interesting.
Bach is very enthusiastic about what he teaches. He sends out emails about updates on things outside of academia relevant to our class material, and it's fun to get them. He is very communicative about what he expects from his students, and it is completely reasonable. I loved this class, and if I could I would take more of his classes. 10/10
His lectures were really entertaining, and he tries to engage with his students even in the big classes. He offers lots of extra credit and is always available if you have questions. Super kind guy and you can tell he loves what he does.
By far the best class I have taken while at Western. Professor Bach makes his lectures very fun and interesting and respects all of his students. Only had 3 online exams related to the lectures throughout the whole quarter that were very chill and were based upon your entire grade. Would highly recommend.
This class was by far one of the most interesting that I have taken. Professor Bach's lectures made class very interesting for me and it helped motivate me to learn to my full potential. Only was graded on short weekly quizzes throughout the quarter. If you study the lectures and the assigned readings then you will do great in the class.
prof bach was a great lecturer but the information on the weekly quizzes was not always covered in the lectures, the class felt like it has too much information for the amount of time. labs were lengthy and confusing but he was very helpful when i asked questions.
Mostly engaging lectures, but often ran out of time. Quiz questions were sometimes on material that wasn't covered in lecture which was annoying. Labs were graded harshly and took a long time, but he was helpful when I had questions. It seems like him and his TA needed to communicate more on grading criteria because there was some confusion.
I took HNRS 215 to fulfill my GUR and Honors minor requirements. I am not too interested in physical geography. Attendance is not mandatory, so I decided to skip a few days of lecture and some readings. If you don't go to class, your grade will suffer. That said, Andy is very chill and will work with you if you ask for help.
You can tell the prof enjoys teaching the subject and only gives homework because you have to get a grade. The quizzes are helpful recaps of the material from that week. The lectures are fun and he's an engaging speaker. It's a super interesting class that's great if you're wanting some easy-ish upper division credits.
Took Mountain Geography with Andy Bach and he was clearly so passionate about the topic it made lectures very engaging. Very simple grading system with a handful of short quizzes for reading responses and one final paper due at the end of the quarter. Always takes time to answer questions and is a very lenient grader. Highly recommend
This class was shockingly disappointing. The professor seemed to have a shallow grasp on his own subject. For example, he said that Mt. Mazama erupted 63,000 years ago. Tests often had material that wasn't covered in lectures. He also never graded the final paper, which was supposed to be worth 25% of the final grade. Steer clear!
Took Geography with Andy this year and loved every class. His lectures are 50 minutes and have great pacing. He has the perfect mix of working with the slides but not just reading off of them. You get the feeling he's been doing this for 30 years because he has. He's passionate about his lectures. He truly cares for his students.
Dr. Bach is a really great professor! He knows what he's talking about, is entertaining and engaging, and manages his lectures well! He's always open to questions and provides well though out feedback. ENVS203 is a pretty chill class. You aren't required to do any readings and there's no homework. All material on exams is gone over during lecture.
Andy is great. He's an engaging speaker and is very knowledgeable. As this is a seminar, you're graded almost exclusively on participation and then a single paper. That being said, he's very willing to help and pretty easy to get a hold of. You don't have to speak in class a ton, just show up and do the paper and you'll pass easily.
