This man belittles and bullies his students. Behavior is appalling
unfriendly doesn't begin to describe it...Warning: Don't take this class.......
very poor teaching skills. He really must hate teaching to be that angry
Belittles students! Very well spoken! Needs an attitude adjustment
Verbal and psychological abuse by this lack of an educator is just the beginning
He liked to teach our class. Was always interesting. He is quite a character.
Nice Guy. If you listen to the music and learn voc. you'll at least get a B.
I don't agree, he is a very nice man, but this is definitely not easy A class
an interesting man who is passionate about music, expects you to know your stuff
have to listen to music & know vocab. Cottle is friendly but demands respect
Do the work, you should do fine. Answers given to the exams before you take them
confusing, arrogant, condescending, need i say more???
Exams ask ridiculously difficult and arcane questions
The exams are ridiculous. You MUST read that hellish book.
Time for old man Bottle with a C to retire with a capital R!
Knows and loves music, good teacher, you have to do the work to get a good grade
Excellent teacher/ knows a ton. Do listening and exams are a breeze.
This old man should retire and work at the mall as Santa already.
he's mean. thats it. and his class sucks
Worst teacher to ever have- I feel sorry if you want to take this class
An excellent teacher with a passion for his subject matter!
WORST CLASS EVER. Santa is coming 2 town.. too bad he cant teach 2 save his life
MUSIC 105 IS EASIER THAN 101!! Santa=tough class,MUSC105=easy A for group A req
Boooorrrrrrrring!
Lectures are boring, tests impossible, bad choice for group a requirement
great teacher, well spoken, knows his stuff, easy if you go to class
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! Big mistake, very difficult.
He'll abuse you probably becuase he feels inadequate about himself
His tests are on his powerpoint presentations...pretty broing class..
If you don't already know something about music, prepare to be lost!
Worst teacher ever, so hard your lucky with a D...Dont take his class
He's cool, keeps people's interest, very nice, southern (from new mexico?)
Great prof, passionate about subject, easy if you listen to music and lecture
not an easy A,hes a nice man (thebad ratings are from those who didn't do work)
study notes and do listening and u have an A- gives test answers- its SANTA!! :)
Apparently Santa left the North Pole to teach music at Delaware
Very conceded....boring class....test arent bad if u study alot
Imparts his passion for music to his students...I would recommend
WONDERFUL, INTERESTING CLASS. follow lectures and study hard. cottle is great!!!
He is not a friendly person & don't take a make-up exam..VERY HARD!
Great Professor, bad reviews come from students who didnt work.
He tries to be funny, overall, hes a nice guy. Starts of easy, gets harder.

Reads off powerpoint, easy class if you study the notes.

Cottle is needs to go slower and help students
dont take this class, very hard tests, boring & impossible to pass
Class is easy if you are from music background. Exams have some tricky questions
Very passionate about music, if you ask for help he'll give it willingly
Not a 100-level class. He makes me mad, so strict. Can be friendly though.
Very Easy, Gives you help whenever you need it
harder than I expected. test questions come from notes. studied notes and got A
I had him last semester and loved his class.
gets ridiculously hard by the end of the semester
very nice
Ho Ho Ho merry failing, extremely hard for 100-level class, hard exams
like Santa, only crazy and scary. tells you exactly what to study-no challenge
No Comments
This was the easiest course I've ever had, high school and college
It may be hard, but he makes it fun and is very knowledgeable + helpful
Nice guy! Really tries to help students, but exams are difficult!! Study!
basically intro to classical music, boring and hard, lot of info to learn
Requires a lot of work, but tells you what to study.. awesome guy, loved class
Very easy if u memorize notes. Cottle is Santa Claus! U must study hard 2 pass!
he's so nice and very informative... looks just like santa ... STUDY HARD & WELL
No Comments
study hard and study well to make your grandma and cottle proud he's funny
Good Prof, very knowledgable. Study and play The Game and get 102s on exams
Easy if you study the review list!!! You can skip a few and still pass!!!
if you can memorize your notes... you can easily pass cottle's class with B-
very enthusiastic, awesome teacher, recommend the class
Worst class ever- do not take if you want a good grade in a BS class.
Not an easy class, nice guy, annoying when he sings
This is the hardest class at UD. I'm a smart guy with a high GPA too. Trust me.
I went Pass/Fail and still barely passed
He's a really nice guy...just make sure you study hard for the tests.
doesn't try to help you, very by the book , he sucks at life!
Great guy, very enjoyable, really loves music. However, this isn't an easy class
He's very enthusiastic. Tests are directly from lecture. Great class.
Hard tests, Flash card guy,
cute little man... not too hard if u study notes and review list that he gives for each exam; u need to do the listening and go to class
coolest man in the world, he reminds me of santa claus... make flashcards and memorize notes on compositions and go to every class (except the video ones) and read your book a night or 2 before the exam and you'll get at least a B+.
I hated his class more than I hate boy bands.
yo ive never seen a more perfect candidate for a shopping mall santa clause in my life. hes so merry.
such a cute little guy but can be kind of mean at times, dont ask stupid questions-go to class and pay attention, tests arent bad
if u think this class is an easy A think again, too much work for a 100 level course, watever u do dont take it
This is NOT a fluff class ... FAR too difficult for a 101. Cute lil Santa Claus lookin' man, but he;s getting old ... he rambles. If you like music more than ANYTHING, take it... If not, don't. It is definitely not an easy A.
Such a nice man, wants you to do well. Not an easy class, you have to do a lot of work to do well but you learn a lot!
95-100 is an A for the course. Just listen to the cds and participate in "The Game" to get extra-credit points.Study the key terms that he will give to u before each test and u will do fine.If u have determination and good work ethics, then u wil
andy's a good guy and he wants you to do well, but his class does take work...you have to really appreciate music - if you do, it's an awesome class, even if people say it's too hard for 101...andy knows his stuff

this is the worst class i've ever taken. i played the violin for 10 years and still struggled through this class because he is the worst professor i have ever had!do not take this class.
This is no joke! This class is VERY difficult. I read on this website before it was and ignored it and enrolled anyway. A huge mistake! The class is boring, early in the morning and the tests are impossible. I do not reccomend this class at all.
This class is pretty hard and boring. You have to study a lot more than you think. Pain to have to listen to the songs on the cd. He is very enthusiastic about teaching music, but I think you really have to like music to really enjoy this class.
DONT EVER TAKE THIS CLASS... you will want to shoot yourself... wicked wicked boring and stupid, and after this class, I have one thing to say... I do NOT appreciate music.
This teacher is a big trap. He seems very nice the first couple of days, in fact he kind of reminds me of santa claus. But after about the first two weeks his humor and his personality start to get really annoying.
I've never felt the need to warn anyone about a professor but watch out for Cottle. He is not very understanding and is very harsh with his comments. Do not take him if you have a choice. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone to save my life.
worked very very hard to get an 89, and he refused to help me out and bump it to an A, listen to the music and go to every lecture
way too much work for a 101 class. nice prof, tests were fair, just study lots and memorize everything
Music sounds fun but this guy certainly knows how to make you think twice about that.
I agree, this class is harder than it should be, he acts like santa clause like everyday, which is getting to be very annoying. It's a good thing I like music, otherwise I wouldn't "appreciate" this class, or him at all
The tests are very hard, but extra credit makes it easy to get an A--if you do 19 extra credit reports you will get an A without every attending class or taking a test
This class was pretty easy. The tests were pretty hard, but the extra credit easily brought me up to an A. As for the professor, he's ok. He is really passionate about his subject and will chew you out if you use a wrong turn. And if you're thinkin about cheatin on his hard tests......don't
this guy is cool. take his class. his extra credit is real helpful and hes funny. hell answer any questions youve got.
He is a horrible man! Dont even think about cheating! I am a music minor and im still doing poorly in the class when I got an A in music history and other classes. He is very unhelpful and never be alone with him. All in all don't take this class with this professor. I love music and he killed it!!!
Way too hard for a 101 class. Make sure you come to class...and do extra credit..that is the only way to get a good grade.
exams were average, not a music major but i thoroughly enjoyed the class, make sure to do the listening and go over notes from class
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I have lost all appreciation for classical music because of him. Usually the class and material are hard and the professor is there to make it easier...Cottle just makes it harder than it has to be. He is stubborn and selfish!
This class was so easy! He takes all his test questions from his power points. All you have to do is go to class and do the listening. Whoever says this is hard has no idea what they are talkin about.
very nice guy, tests are hard but extra credit makes it impossible not to get a good grade. hes really passionate about the class which makes it more interesting. overall great class and excellent professor.
NEVER EVER TAKE THIS CLASS. if u think it's an easy a U ARE WRONG!!!!
Horrible teacher. Impossible Tests. Treats a 100 level course like it is a 400 level course. If you are going to take the class make sure he will still be giving extra credit, he said he might not be doing it anymore. If you don't want to ruin your average don't take this class.
I loved Prof Cottle...his passion for music is exciting and makes the class an enjoyable one despite the amount of outside listenings. I learned a great deal and found this to be one of my favorite classes at UD.
Tough class. Extra credit is nice. Tucker Maxx and Cottle would get along great.
WORST TEACHER AT UD!!!!!!!!! DO NOT TAKE CLASS!!!!!!!! DOES NOT CARE ABOUT STUDENTS, IS NOT HELPFUL WHATSOEVER!!!! WARNING! DO NOT TAKE CLASS!!!!!!!!!!
I thought it was a great class. I found him to be really funny, and I would take another class with him in a second. You other people dont know what you're talking about.
The worst teacher you will ever encounter. Seems nice at fist but he doesn't care at all. He is a complete jerk when it comes to help. Talks down to you. He has a problem with helping students, i guess its not in his nature. Don't even ask for help...more problems occur with his attitude...terrible!
Does this guy assume his class is the only one everyone is taking? He maintains his jolliness day-to-day meanwhile half the class is failing."yay! we get to play the game now!" That's good for the music buffs in the room. the rest of us wonder if theres something wrong w/ us b/c we can't pass music!
u people just have to go to lecture and pay attention!! dont believe the crap other people are telling u.."ohh he teaches a 100 level course as if its a 400 level course...only music majors will do well" oh u people are just lazy and lookin for an easy A...its a good class and ul appreciate it once
You have to work hard for an A, but he is still a good professor and he is happy everyday. Go to the review sessions in his office and do some extra credit, it'll help so much.
Nice to your face but is actually not a nice person. Way too critical.
I have no idea what the person who commented on 5/4/05 is thinking. This guy is rediculously hard and does not care about his students at all. I studied harder for his class than for my 400 level bio classes! He's mean, critical and COLD HEARTED. WAKE UP COTTLE, the grades you give your students impact the rest of their educational career!
Great class. came away appreciating music that I never liked before. Listen to the music a bunch of times before the quizzes and you will get a good grade.
Hard class, jerk of a teacher. Do not wait to see how the class goes and then maybe drop it, its after drop/add that he really starts screwing you. Especially if this is for a requirement, its not worth taking.
Avoid at ALL costs! He's paranoid and is a mean old man. He acts jolly like Santa but is really cold. Tests are ridiculous, and extra credit would help if he wouldn't reject some it due to things he THINKS are errors. He WILL accuse you of cheating if you happen to look up at the ceiling or scratch your nose.No I haven't learned to appreciate music.
YOU HAVE TO WORK HARD TO GET AN A. THE TESTS AREN'T EASY IF YOU HAVE NOT PREPARED FOR THEM. THE GRADING IN EXTRA CREDIT IS A LITTLE HARSH. BUT I HAVE COME OUT APPRECIATING MUSIC AFTER THIS CLASS. HE HOLD REVIEW SESSIONS BEFORE THE EXAMS. THAT IS HELPFUL. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR TO EVERY1.
MUST do extra credit or you won't pass...he seems like a nice guy, but don't be fooled
I like music, but am not a music major-hence I thought this course would be fun-but no! Cottle made this course harder than it needed to be! Hard tests, and stiff w/the extra credit, accused students of cheating when they didn't! Though he's nice and jolly, don't take his class-it's not a fun elective like it should be!
AWFUL! He excepts you to just pick this stuff up in no time. This takes time to learn and understand. Got a 50 on my first test after listening to the music and studying for over 8 hours. He gives tons of extra credit, but is so picky about little english mistakes, so good luck getting it accepted.
he's extremely jolly and looks like santa clause. He gives review sessions all semester long and if you study the material from class you'll be fine and not have to do extra credit.
HORRIBLE TEACHER, seems like he teaches more for himself than for his students. His tests are impossible. DO NOT TAKE COTTLE.
He seems nice but he is not at all. He says things in a "Jolly" manner even when he is being a ****. This class is wayyy harder than it has to be. If you feel like studying your life away for an intro class, go ahead, but i would never ever reccomend it....ever!

Incredibly friendly, great teacher, infinitely patient, willing to help!! The class is easy!!!!!! The four tests are so straightforward. just pay attention in class and you'll get an A. He tells you what's on the tests and listenings.
This class is not good at all. Do not take it. The tests are overly difficult an detailed. You could potentially get a good grade if you study every day and every night.
worst class or worst professor. hardest 101 class ever. the tests are horrible and contain irrelevant info. no one cares about who composers best freinds were.
Dont need the book Just the CD's. nice teacher, extremly helpful. if you dont do well on the tests there is a lot of extra credit. take good notes, define the study guide items and listen to the music. once again listen to the music. Peace and Joy you cock-a-doodles
Cottle is a very nice, extremely intelligent teacher who teaches everything on the test. The key to getting an A is to go to every class and study at least 7 hours for every test. Its all memorization, so its not all that bad. Plus, the extra credit helps a ton and is easy to get at least 5 points on. Just study a lot before each test.
The class is called "Appreciation of Music", but it has made me appreciate music significantly less than i did before...funny that.
Cottle's class is ridiculously difficult for a 101. DEF NOT AN EASY A. Don't take this without prior music experience! He doesn't show up for review sessions:( Approach this class as you would a higher level class for your major, study every chance you get! The only saving grace is extra credit, which I recommend starting on VERY early.
aww man, Cottle was so anal in everything. He was just the worst!
Perhaps the most presumptuous and haughty person I have ever met. Class wasn’t too hard as long as you could put up with his ridiculous attitude. Extra credit helps, but don’t expect him to accept a paper on the first try. Exam days are so strict that you'd think his tests are a matter of national security.
Definitely not a class worth taking. Very hard to get above a B. Cottle is very odd & hard to take seriously. The tests had a lot of useless info on them! I don't recommend it!
Course was not easy at all! You have to work your butt off, but he is a cute little man.
youre not gonna get an a. unless you overachieve, a lot. basically he gives you some of the info to study and the rest is just random. no idea what you will get. he's atleast excited about teaching it so he's not too dull.
He's really nice, and his lectures are really straight-forward in regards to what you'll be tested on. I didn't really find the class to be boring, but you can miss class and go to a study session and make up all of the notes, plus get some of his own info. I found it to be a generally easy class. But study!!

terrible class!
This man is a nightmare. Not only is he the most anal person ive ever met in my life, he thinks he's teaching a 400 level class for music majors. He obviously loves music, but if you take this class you defintiely won't.
the 3 people below my posting must be retards, cause this class is the easiest class ever if you just pay attention and study. He gives you so many chances for extra points, and his exams are easy as hell if you just study; which can be really interesting for this class. Cottle's the man
No Comments
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Tests are not easy, despite what the person below me says. He talks down to you if you go to his office hours for help. This is not the way to give students appreciation for music! He give extra credit but is far too strict with that also.
I thought this class would be a nice welcome break from having to take intro to bio, general chem I, and calc I-Boy was I Wrong! Class is boring, tests are hard, and he's anal w/the extra credit. Not to mention, he treats exam days like the SAT! No I didn't learn to appreciate music-but the drop add period!
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TAKE THIS CLASS! Treats students like crap: Makes the extra credit next to impossible to obtain, condescending, full of himself. You will lose credit for the most insignificant of details and spend hours studying for a test which looks nothing like what is taught in class. NOT AN EASY CLASS AT ALL.
the class is very hard.. a lot of memorization and a lot more tricky than you'd ever expect. however, he is so passionate about what he teaches that you can't help but love him. he offers extra study sessions and lets you do extra credit.. overall, HARD class but NICE guy.
Class isn't really hard. Just memorize your notes and everything on listening guides and you'll get an A. I got 100% on two exams just by doing this. Class is interesting and Cottle is a really nice guy. Special credit makes it easy to fix a grade if you screw up. He looks like Santa Claus!
Honestly, if you want to learn about the development of music from the 1200's till now, and you are willing to work very very hard for an A, take the class. If you're looking for and easy 100 level elective DON'T TAKE THIS COURSE. (do all the extra-credit)
Took points off an exam because I "bubbled" in the wrong letters on my Scantron which brought down my final avg one letter grade. Ends lectures with "peace and joy" which is a total front; really a cold hearted b*stard.
He looks like santa but definately is not anywhere as jolly! The first few days I thought the class would be fun but I was wrong. He does not follow the text at all, only uses the companion cd. To get an A it is definately necessary to do the extra credit essays but be prepared to spend extra money on concert tickets and rewrite each a few times!
Andrew Cottle is a nice teacher and can appear to be a nice guy, but if you don't do things exactly his way he treats you like you're in preschool. He can be very condescending and extremely pompous as most people who are into the arts tend to be. As far as the class goes it isn't an easy A, but it's easy to get a B with the extra credit offered.
Hard class, but fun guy!
word to the preschool comment. this definitely ain't an easy class either. not an easy A 101 class. people get a's - you just need to drill the music about an hour a day, plus read and get lectured. it was a little too much
Mr. Cottle comes off with the attitude that he is supreme over his students. He demonstrates this on the tests with questions only he would know and by calling you out in front of 100+ people if you are talking. The listening examples are hard on the exams because he only plays 7 seconds of the piece.
This class is definitely challenging but was really enjoyable. It was by far my favorite class last semester. You need to have some initial interest in classical music though in order for it to be somewhat enjoyable. He's a really interesting guy and his lectures are always good.
If I could give you one piece of advice for the future, it would be NOT to take a class with this man! Any class, any where. NEVER EVER DO IT.
This class was hard as hell, but the prof tried to help as much as he could....listen to the music samples as the semester goes on, the more you procrastinate the harder the listening portion of the exam is. also, go to class, if you don't you really miss alot, I pulled a C-, but it was hard work to get it
I loved music before this class and I still do, but this man almost made me hate it. He is terribly rude, and rather intimidating. The tests were nearly impossible to study for, as most of the questions were about extremely subtle things in the pieces that only someone with a previously, well-trained ear would be able to pick up on.
great guy! class is hard, so be sure to study, but its a great class overall. cottle's awesome!
This class was a piece of cake! Do the readings in the book and take the online quizzes, most of the exam questions are from the online tests. I was sick all semester and he was so accomadating and understanding I was still able to get an A in the class. It's kind of a lot of reading but you can get an A no problem if you work a little.
Very good teacher and interested in his subject but it is an extremely hard class. Very misleading in it's description, definitely would not reccomend.
i was really excited about this class until this guy started teaching. i mean if you're looking for some laughs then he's your man. but if you want to learn about music, look else where. this class was more about his use of terminology. he wasn't a good teacher at all. stay away from this guy.
This class is as hard as you make it. Attending study sessions and reviewing learned information is the key to an A. I almost dropped this class after reading all these negative comments but this class was my easiest and highest grade. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Take this class! It was so easy. The grade consists of 400 points, and he gives you 40 points of extra credit opportunity. Go to study sessions, he'll give you all the information you need for the test.
very easy if you go to class. HE even has study sessions where he will basically ask questions to people that will be on the test. The hardest part is differentiating between songs on the listening list. I just put them on my ipod and learned each list in about 3 days. TAKE!!!
if you're looking for an easy A, DO NOT take this class. There's so much material and his test questions are tricky. He treats this class like it's for music majors
The only way I pulled an A- in this class is because we used the same book in highschool. Go to class, read the textbook, listen to the music as he tells you to. Nice guy, has interesting stories about the pieces to go with lectures. Not terribly difficult, but definitely make sure you know at something about music before going into this class.
This class is really interesting and Prof. Cottle is very enjoyable as a professor. However, it's important to remember that you will be learning about CLASSICAL music, not heavy metal. If you are cultured and willing to study the material, take this class. If not, don't bother, because you will only complain that the class is "boring".
NOT AN EASY A ! just a warning to those who think music appreciation is a joke. (He might look like Santa but his tests are no gift). If you understand music than you wont have any trouble in this class. Otherwise stay clear. Cock-a-doodle-doo !!!!
A really nice guy and good teacher. Organized study sessions and gave insight on exactly what would be on the exam.
Cottle is a nice guy and offers study sessions twice a week. Memorizing the music is easy and reading the text book is a definite if you want an A.
This class is NOT an easy A. However, it's definitely not as bad as a lot of the comments I'm reading. Cottle is a very sweet man and knows his music, but his tests are quite difficult. If you go to class and study ahead of time, you'll get an A. Studying in advance and paying attention in class is the key to success. It was enjoyable in my opinion
Weird Guy but Different and kind of cool. Makes you go to two concerts which I would never do on my own, but wasnt bad. Test were pretty hard, and you had to memorize some classical music. Not easy but interesting. Good Guy.
Not entirely difficult if you do the two concert reports. Get an A on the first exam (by far the easiest) and don't completely mess up the others and you should be set.
I'm not a music person. That's why i'm a bio major! Still, I should be able to take a 100 level class and get a decent grade. Cottle has a great passion for music, but it's unfair to force that passion onto others with an overly hard course. Save it for your 300 level classes Cottle! Its not fair for the rest of us! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I was in band all 4 years of high school and still struggled with this course! His exams were ridiculously hard for an intro level course for non-majors! He does offer extra credit, but that's not a guarantee because he won't even bother to read everything if he catches 2 "errors." Sure I passed, but this class was not worth taking at all!
Dr. Cottle makes this class ridiculously difficult. Expects you to spend hours upon hours memorizing vocab and listening to classical pieces- Expects you to know EVERYTHING, tests are very hard. Not worth it, don't take this class!!!!
This is a fairly difficult course. If your looking to culture yourself and learn about classical music, its your class. You have study a good amount, but nothing crazy. He's oddly specific on test. All you have to do is do the 2 extra credits and you get 10 points on your final average, and do well on the 1st exam, its so easy
This coming from a huge band geek with plenty of classical music in my iTunes already. I do not recommend this class. The tests are frighteningly specific. If it isn't a major requirement, though, you could take it pass/fail. you can pretty much blow it off and get a C.
he is amazing. awesome professor-study sessions are great & really help. he gives you a list of terms you should know. he gives you 2 extra credit assignments that can boost your total grade up +10. he is so sweet & caring.
Really nice guy, loves what he does. But this course was WAY too hard for a 100 level course. DO NOT take this if its not a major requirement unless you really enjoy knowing minute details of classical pieces.
This is way to hard for a 100 level course. I would recommend saving this breath requirement for a class that's more interesting and easier. The class consisted of memorization - only. You could spend hours memorizing notes and music without retaining much information. The listening aspect is a pain as well! Tests get harder.
Worst class I've taken at UD. So unnecessarily hard for a 100 level course. Do not take this class if you have zero music background you will be completely lost, he thinks that everyone is just as knowledgeable as he is.
Professor Cottle is so nice and I hate seeing all these harsh things on here. Yes it's a tough class but if you go to class and take notes and do the listening you shouldn't have too much trouble on the tests. Especially with the extra credit he offers you shouldn't have an issue getting a B at the end of the semester.
This guy is excellent. Success in Music Appreciation is based on two things: absorbing lecture info and doing the required listening. Cottle speaks in a way that holds your interest and really enjoys the material he teaches. While most people say this class is hard you will love it if have experience in classical music. Favorite class so far at UD.
Prof Cottle is the man. He makes learning boring music actually entertaining. He's one of the nicest and funniest teachers I've had. Sure the class isn't that easy and it requires some studying but what class doesn't. Go to study sessions as well they're helpful.
I LOVE this man. He was a fantastic professor and was hilarious. Don't be scared by all the harsh reviews on here, if you actually put in some time and effort, you CAN get an A. He gives so much extra credit and the material is interesting. Do the listening, though, and study often! Not easy, but this was my favorite class this semester by far.
Interesting class, not what I expected at all. Gave you all the information, and then put up videos of each powerpoint in case you weren't there. Tests were terrifyingly hard, and there were only four all semester. Not what I thought a 101 music class would be like at all. Avoid if memorization is a problem for you.
He's a really sweet guy and loves teaching. His tests are based mostly on memorization, but the study sessions help a lot. If you like classical music, I would definitely recommend this class.
Cottle is a really nice guy. He calls himself Santa because he gives a slight curve on each test. However, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you don't have a strong background in music. This is definitely not what a 101 course should be. Tests are unbelievably difficult, even if you read the book and notes. He posts his lectures online, which is helpful.
Cottle is definitely a very nice guy and does give two chances for extra credit. I personally have a strong musical background and struggled in this class. You basically have to know all of the slides word for word in order to get an A. DO NOT take this as an easy breadth requirement, it is WAY too much work for a 100 level course! Good luck!
I totally regret taking this class. Luckily I made it out with an A- thanks to the multiple extra credit opportunities he offers. The first two test i completely bombed but the last two I found the right way to study. It really helped me to watch all the lectures over again on UD capture the day before the tests.
You'll either love him or hate him. I got away with a C+ and hardly understood anything so in terms of passing a class, this is easy. You could easily get a B or and A if you work. He's really passionate about boring music but he tries to make it painless. He gives extra credit!
I personally thought that this class was incredibly hard. Cottle is a really nice guy, but his tests are ridiculous. If you're looking for an easy group A then don't take this class
I personally love the genres he focuses on and I like that he's so passionate about it. I've been involved in music for about 7 years so it was pretty easy for me. Wouldn't recommend for anyone who hates classical music. Only grades are 4 exams, make sure you study well for them. Does offer extra credit and help sessions, and he records lectures.
I personally didn't mind this class. Cottle offers 10 extra credit points to your overall grade. If you are getting an 87 in the class you will get a 97 with the 10 extra points. You definitely need to study a couple days before the exams but they aren't as bad as everyone says. I'm a science major with absolutely no music background and got an A.
He even says the first day "THIS IS NOT AN EASY CLASS". Though you can get up to 5 points for each extra credit (there are 2) you have to pay and go off campus for one of the options unless there is something at UD but there wasn't for me. the class is not hard, but it is DEFINITELY not easy.
Tests were scary hard. I am great at memorizing info but his tests were just on another level. Terrifyingly specific and long. I had no music background and the sheer amount of info you needed to know for one test was dreadful. Do not recommend. Way too hard of a course-especially for a 100 level.
He tells you exactly what to expect the first day. YOur grade is based on four multiple choice exams, the information for which he gives verbatim in lectures. He also offers extra credit for a total of 10 points added to your grade. The listenings can be challenging if you haven't heard a lot of "classical" music. THis class is straightforward
I'd like to make it clear that Prof. Cottle is fun to be around and he tries his best. Many students go into this course expecting it to be an easy breadth requirement fulfillment - but they regret that decision the moment they see the first exam. PLEASE do yourself a favor - stay away from this course unless you have an interest for the topic...
Let me first say that Prof. Cottle is a very nice and approachable guy. His lectures are pretty good as well. But the class is definitely going to take effort on your part. In my opinion it is more difficult than a level 101 course should be. Flashcards will be your best friend in this class, due to the amount of vocabulary given.
If you're coming into this class, expecting an easy A, you're in for a rude awakening. With that said, this was by far my favorite class that I have taken so far at UD. Cottle is a very sweet guy who gives out curves like theres no tomorrow. Stay on top of listenings, attend every class, take good notes, and attend study sessions (they help!)
perfect
There are only 4 grades in the semester 4 tests. However, you can receive up to 10% extra credit. That's right- 10%. So if you get an average of 80% on your 4 tests, and get full credit for the extra credit you can end up with a 90. He's a good guy but demands a lot from his students. You have to study and do the listening for the music!!
Really fun guy, he enjoys his job and wants every student to succeed, but he gets really disappointed when the class average is like 70. It's a really hard class if you don't thoroughly study the material. There are lots of strangely specific questions on the exams too. I enjoyed the class, but not the exams.
go to class if you want to have a chance at doing well on exams. he covers almost everything on his powerpoints in class, and he goes at a good pace. however, reading the textbook pages that he has online really helps for some exam questions. keep up with your listening! definitely not an easy A, but he's a sweetheart
Read the chapters he assigns, show up to lecture and write down what is on the slides. Listen to the music he assigns consistently (you can even listen to it while studying for other stuff). Four tests, all multiple choice and are straight from the exams written for the book. Make sure to go to the extra credit concerts.
This class should be an easy A as long as you have TIME. You need to memorize at least 10 songs before every exam, make sure you take all the notes in his class or else you won't know anything (he doesn't post his notes online). The extra credit is a must in this class and almost everyone does it.
Worst class I ever took at UD, lectures were long and dry, exams impossible, studied for this class substantially longer than all of my 400 level pre-law classes combined, barely scraped together a C+ and i played cello for 10 years, purpose of a 101 level breadth requirement class should be simple introduction to material, not to challenge Mozart.
Hands down one of the best professors I've ever had. He's the jolliest, happiest person I've seen teach a class in a very long time. He's passionate, he's clear, he's immensely helpful during study sessions, and if you do your work, you'll ace the class with ease. It helps if you have a musical background, but even if you don't, you'll still suceed
