This guy had to be a roadie at one time in life... he's great.
never leanred more in one class from one guy

A great teacher and a great class
Great guy...seems to love his job and knows just about everything about his subject. Take his class before you leave IU.
Though I am an IU student, I have never actually taken this guy's class. I have, however, heard him perform live in a little place called Capers 2 hours from Bloomington (located in Tell City, Indiana). If not a great prof, he is a fine guitarist.
best class ever
He is amazing. His classes are funny and insightful. He knows his stuff. Hell, he lived through most of it. And if you want to know your musical roots, the class is an absolute must.
Everyone should experience one of his classes.

Probably the best professor I've had at IU. His Music of Frank Zappa class is just stellar. His History of the Music of the 70's and 80's class rocks too. Plus he's a great guitarist and creates some good music.
This class was the best I've ever taken--so much fun, so much info, so much experience from Andy (aka Coach). Take any of his classes!! And buy his cds too.
Exciting class. Awesome professor. He makes it interesting.
Andy Hollinden is an amazing person
Best teacher ever!!!!
Awesome class!!! One of my most enjoyable. Made me appreciate music genres and artists I did not care about before taking the class. Studied more than rock, almost every single modern genre.
Andy is a hip cat.
Rock of the 70's and 80's. Fantastic professor with personal experience with many of the bands... his own music is great as well. Knows the material and connects with the students, regardless of class size. HIGHLY recommend.
Guy is hilarious
This is the best professor I've had in my college career. His classes are fun and he's hilarious. Everyone should take one of his classes. Just remember that just because it's a class about rock and roll doesn't mean you don't have to work. I've seen the tests mess people up because they expect them to be cake. If you do some work you should be fine.
clearly knows his music, still hip but doesn't try to be, very enthusiatic about what he teaches, keeps it real... cooler than most students at IU... i suspect many girls think he's a total hottie
Awesome class. Didn't study got 100% right. Really inthused and plays awesome videos. Anticipating a stressful semester? Take this class!
Jimi Hendrix Class. Great teacher. It is rare to find a professor with such enthusiasm. Make it a point to take one of his courses.
very knowlagable of the material but i think he expects too much form the class as far as knowing as much as he does
70s and 80s. LOTS of songs covered from EVERY genre...expect to study several songs that all sound very similar, especially if you're not familiar with the music. Tests can be hard if you dont memorize the songs in advance. You basically have to know the ends and outs of every song for the tests which can be hard. Awesome and fun prof though.
Great class. Hollinden is hilarious and always has great stories to tell. Just go to class and listen to the assigned music and you will pass.
Great teacher. Very knowledgeable. You will learn so much about music, and culture in general, from this man. ANDY HOLLINDEN IS A ROCK STAR
Andy Hollinden is the baddest ass in all the land, write that down
awesomeeeeeeeeee. love this guy
Quite Simply Amazing
I love this teacher. He is a definate hero for me and If I could grow up to be exactly like him, I'd be happy with life.
You learn while not even realizing it's happening.

I want his job!
Take any class with him. Youll be glad you did. Awesome teacher.
this dude is the man, great class you learn a lot and have fun listening to great music
Awesome class, easy A, real happy I took it.
hard class, very boring. this guy is very rude to students
This class was awesome! You spent the entire class listening to some great music (Led Zeppelin, Cream, etc) and learning about how various bands got started. Prof Hollinden definitely knows rock music.
Andy is the awesome! He shows a sincere interest in everything he says, he's super knowledgeable about everything having to do with music. He's great to talk to if you have a question, and he's very helpful. I would recommend Rock in the 70s and 80s to anyone and everyone.
Really funny, energetic, and knows the material and is passionate about it.
This guy is completely full of himself. He doesn't really "know" more about rock and roll than a person who just read a bunch of wikipedia articles. Take all the rock and roll classes taught by Glenn Gass, but ignore this one. The guy is kind of a jerk and even gets facts wrong (I caught him on one and he barely admitted he was wrong).
Best teacher by far at IU. Attendance isn't mandatory but his class was the highlight of my week and I don't think I ever missed a lecture. He makes just about the greatest subject topic in the world even better and even has his own albums out (which should show you how awesome he is). If you have room for an elective take this class!!!!!!
Sweet
Andy is the****! This is a decently hard class though... A lot of strange music that sounds very similar, but if you're good with this kind of music, you should be fine... Just write down what he writes on the board, study those notes, and listen to the songs and you should do fine
Andy is a rock star! This is the class that taught me the most my entire college career. He makes learning fun and is just a great teacher/man. You learn about great music and will remember his info for life. He can poke fun at students some times, but it is in good fun. He cares about teaching you.
Very easy class. He is a great teacher and loves what he does. He is hilarious!
First off for all the people who've commented saying this is an easy class are probably Hollinden's minions. Andy has what I like to call an invisible pump. He pumps out all your interest in the subject, misrepresents facts, and has a classic God complex. If you try to point out anything wrong in him his classic answer would be "There isn't any righ
*continuation to below comment* "There isn't any right or wrong answer to this" You sure as hell better listen to the music everyday and take your almonds on time cause' you will have to remember a ton of names for exams and over a 100 songs per exam. Proceed with your own caution,
This class is awesome. Andy is an amazing professor and makes you want to come to class. Overall the class isn't too tough as long as you listen to the music. I would also HIGHLY recommend you listen to Andy's albums. He is an excellent song writer and you learn something about him through his music. His singing isn't too bad either.
Awesome teacher. Never wanted to skip his class because he made it fun. I am gonna try and get him again before i graduate
Great professor. Funny, knows his stuff, and wants to know what students think about the subject, in general and specifically. If you listen to the songs and go to class (I don't see why you wouldn't want to go to his class), you'll get an A. It's not that his tests are ridiculously easy, but rather that he teaches so well.
He is an awesome teacher. He loves what he teaches, and makes you interested in some types of music you may never have listened to before. You NEED to go to class and listen to your songs. If you are great at recognizing bands then you're set, if not you'll have to work at it. I definitely suggest taking him!
Lectures are entertaining but the tests are difficult. Especially the listening section.
This has been one of my favorite classes while at IU. Andy is a fantastic professor and I found him to be extremely entertaining. I never wanted to miss class. I highly recommend any of his classes. He's so great.
Good nature guy, knows a lot about the subject (Frank Zapp/Mothers of Invention).
I have taken every single one of Andy Hollinden's classes at IU and they have all been great. He engages his students in the lectures, unlike Gass who never calls on students who have questions. This class is not hard! If you go to class, take notes, and listen to the music you will do well. Students who fail to take notes, and cram for exams, FAIL
This is a fairly easy class, and if you love the music of the time, you're gonna have a pretty easy time of it. Barely used the textbook, tests are 50 multiple choice questions. Go to class, take notes, you'll be fine.
I'm a senior about to graduate and this professor is one of the best I've had at IU. He's so funny and knows A LOT about the topics he teaches. This isn't my first class with him either. Attendance isn't mandatory, but it's the best way to pass the class. Expect to do A LOT of music-listening for the exams. Overall: A+ class & professor.
Beach Boys Class: Andy is a great teacher & was very enthusiastic. The class was a little more difficult than I expected, but I would consider taking another one of his classes. Expect to do memorize a lot of music.
Andy is an excellent instructor and is always more than helpful if you have questions. The class is large(115) but he encourages students to partcipate with interactive questions and answers. There is listening to this class and attending each class for note taking is important. I would highly recommend this course to other students.
Andy's one of my favorite professors ever. The class I took was over Jimi Hendrix, and I was very unfamiliar with Jimi going into this class. It was very easy to be engaged in the lectures, and as long as you put in a couple hours per exam to listen to the music, the exams were a breeze.
I wasn't sure if I wanted to take this class because it was kind of late in the evening, but I'm glad I did. It can be easy if you study. But I do enjoy going to class, Hollinden is hilarious! Really quirky, tells good stories, and really knows his stuff.
He is a really fun teacher. I love going to his class everyday. If you enjoy music and you want to learn more about it I definitely recommend taking one of his classes!
He's really cool and makes class enjoyable. He really knows what he's talking about and presents it clearly. Expects you to go to class and take good notes, otherwise the class will be difficult. Exams are half artist identification and half knowing information about artists. Show up, take good notes, and listen to the music a lot for a good grade
Do not take this class unless you already known all of the rock n roll songs and artist. You have to listen to this terrible music 24/7 to pass the class.
Andy is awesome! He is one of the funniest instructors on campus. I had no interest in the course before hand, but he made the class very interesting. The class does take time, as you are required to memorize songs & facts about the artists, but if you're a good memorizer you'll get an A or B easy in the course.
This guy is extremely passionate about music and is very knowledgeable on rock music. Very fun to listen to!
One of my favorite teachers (and people) of all time
This class is much harder than I expected. Each exam you have to memorize 70+ songs. He chooses 25 songs out of this list and you must be able to state the artist and/or song title from a 30 second excerpt. There is also a difficult history section. He does not give you much guidance on studying for the exam or what history to memorize.
MUST LISTEN TO MUSIC TO PASS THE CLASS. I never opened the book so I wouldn't recommend buying it. As long as you go to the class and take notes and study the notes and music extensively before the test you should be fine! Funny professor, I suggest taking it with friends as a fun class to study for together.
I loved Andy's courses. During my time at IU I took three of his music classes, two being general history of rock classes and one being his Frank Zappa class. Listen to the music and pay attention in class and you've got an A. He makes it clear what content will be covered on the exam. He's hilarious and has a lot of insight on life. Take it!
If you like music, then this is the prof for you. Straight forward grading, no if, ands, or butts about it. I've enjoyed both classes I was able to take. Key is, just as he will tell you, listen to the music assigned, early and often. He is available if you need, and a great lecturer! Can't wait to find another class to take from him.
This is by far my favorite class at IU. The lectures are absolutely hilarious and he does a great job making the class interesting . The course requires a lot of listening to the music, but you don't even have to crack open the textbook to pass. Definitely take a class of his before you graduate!
Amazing teacher and a fun class.
There was never a dry lecture. He shows a lot of interesting videos.
So cool that I can take a class on Rock and Roll. This guy does an awesome job making the class exciting, I always feel like i'm going to some kind of concert/show instead of class. I will take more of his classes in the future.
I absolutely loved this course and this professor. Though my grade was lower than I had expected I still rate this as my favorite class of the semester. Hollinden is super down to earth and exactly what you would expect of a history of rock n roll prof. I would take this class every semester if I could. Highly recommend!!
Hollinden is great. I loved his History of Rock N Roll III class. I felt the love for the music which made me love it more. You're only graded on 4-5 exams, so there's no room to improve a bad score, unfortunately, but it's an easy course regardless as long as you show up and listen to the music.
The classes from Andy have had an impact on my life more so than most of my classes at IU. He inherently provides that due to being accessible to those outside of the Music school; however, if you pay attention to his material, you can provide that to yourself or (in my case) to your offspring as the years pass. I can't thank Andy enough.
Attendance isn't mandatory but you HAVE to go to EVERY lecture if you want to come close to passing, doesn't post powerpoints online and they contain all the stuff you need to know. Hollinden is a super guy, and eventually you'll start to smile every time he says, "Are we okay with this concept?" Really nice guy, definitely recommend
Andy is very knowledgeable about the Beach Boys and it makes him a perfect fit for the class. His passion for teaching is very obvious and want his students to receive the best grade possible. Listen to the music for a good amount and make good notes in class and this should be an easy A.
Great dude and great class. Learned a ton.
I always enjoyed going to this lecture. Excellent music, fantastic professor, what's not to love? 10/10 recommend
Took History of Rock 'n Roll in 6 week summer course. Lectures were fun and laid back, spend most of the time listening and talking about music. We had a small class so we were all involved. Would recommend 10/10 for an interesting elective
Cool dude. Rockin class.
Z203 History of Rock N' Roll was honestly nothing like I expected. The class is difficult especially being someone who didn't know a lot of about 70's and 80's rock n roll. You MUST go to lecture and you HAVE TO listen to the music. That being said, Andy is really cool. Brings fire to the class and he's super passionate about the material.
Great professor. The exams contained 60 different artists that you have to be able to identify through song and answer multiple choice questions concerning the band member's names, producers, top hits, etc. That being said, the exams were a lot to work for, but lecture was always fun.
The lectures are an hour and a half of listening to music and listening to Hollinden crack jokes. Missing a lecture doesn't set you back at all. The final grade is based on 4 exams and there is an optional 5th exam that can replace your worst exam grade if you do well. Super important to listen to the music a lot and be able to identify the artist.
Great teacher! As long as you show up and listen to the music, you will pass no problem. Recommend this course to everyone
The only grades in his class are these super fun and super easy exams. It says textbook required but I wasted $24, don't buy it. All the notes are in class. Speaking of which, attendance isn't mandatory but who doesn't just want to listen to rock for an hour? Besides he's really funny and all around just a sweet and nice guy. JUST LISTEN TO MUSIC!!
I took Andys History of Rock n Roll class my freshman year back in 2013 so it should speak volumes about his personality that I still miss his lectures to this day. Witty and passionate guy who keeps it real, grading wise. Since hes been in and around the music scene he offers amazing insight on subject topics. 10/10 would recommend.
I took Andys Music of Jimi Hendrix course and I absolutely loved this class. He is an awesome guy and I would highly recommend taking this class if you have interest in Jimi Hendrix, music, or if you just want to take a cool course. One tip just don't want til the last minute to study.
Great guy. Great class
Very fun class and I'm sad that it's ending! Andy is very knowledgeable when it comes to music, so you'll learn a lot. Attendance isn't taken, but all the information that's on the test is highlighted on in class, so you have to be present to get it. He's a funny, easy-going guy and makes class fun
He's amazing! He's such an interesting guy and you can really see his passion and understanding for music throughout the lectures. If you don't like the music, there's no point in taking the class because you have to listen to it a lot. Definitely have to put work into the class and have to attend because he doesn't post notes online!
Really cool guy. I cannot recommend the Jimi Hendrix class enough. It's easy as long as you go to class and listen to the music, and I truly enjoyed it. His class was always the highlight of my day this semester.
Andy is the best professor at IU. His lectures are awesome and he is super funny. Z203 tests are easy with an information section and listening section. Super laid back guy.
Amazing lectures rich with information. Especially fun and interesting if you are interested in the subject matter. Andy is exceptionally laid back and also very passionate about rock and roll. Great man and class.
Andy is truly the best professor I have had here at IU. He is genuine, passionate, and extremely funny! He is very engaging and his lectures are the complete opposite of dry. I had him for History of Rock 'n Roll and his notes are very minimal. You spend the majority of each class day watching video clips of famous, older, rock 'n roll artists!!
4 tests, 4 days showing up to class for the semester. Easiest class available I have taken. I took z201 and went to every class and loved every lecture. I took z203 and never went besides test days and it was just as easy, just a little more study time to learn the bands. Tests are 25 multiple choice, 25 listening to a song and naming the band. A+
I wasn't interested in taking history of rock n roll at all, given I don't really like the genre. However, this has by far been one of the most easy and fun classes I've taken so far. All you need to do is study hard before the test and you are guaranteed to get an A+. No need to go to class. Highly recommend.
By far my favorite professor of semester. Andy is obviously passionate about his class and subject matter, but still very open to hearing dissenting opinions from students. He is well-spoken and does not waste class time, and lectures are genuinely entertaining. If given the chance, take the honors discussion alongside this class!
LOVE andy. I didnt typically go to class just because the study guide said litteraly everything you need for a test if you follow the text book w it. hes so funny and he makes lecture enjoyable. tests are answering questions about band members & then half is listening to songs and saying the artist. Would definitely want his class again
Andy is the best. He is so funny and his class is very entertaining. If you show up, take notes, and listen to the music, it's an easy A and requires minimal studying. There is no homework, except the work you do on your own time. The class is an hour and fifteen minutes but could be done in 20 minutes every class, it's a little bit of a dread.
Its not that I didnt like Professor H, but History of RR is not as easy as it sounds. If you do not have any background into RR, it will be quite difficult as you have to study a lot to remeber songs that all sound similar. I dropped because I wasn't going to do well, but I would for sure take it if I enjoyed Rock.
Andy is a real man. One of the only prof at IU who actually cares about what he teaches. He loves it and you can tell. I love this man more than anything. Please please please take one of his classes you wont regret it!!!
Andy is an awesome guy and an even better professor. He is super funny and never fails to get a laugh out of the class every time. You can tell that he is passionate about what he teaches. He is extremely helpful, but won't put up with any bull in his class. Pay attention to the lectures, show up, and take notes and you'll pass.
An amazing professor, for my class we never had any homework, just listen to the music and it will be the easiest class you ever take
Humorous professor that makes lecture interesting. Class is easy, just make sure you do well on the tests.
Andy was awesome in every way except for when he said Eric Clapton wasn't the greatest British Blues Guitarist. Clapton fans look out.
I took this as an A&H credit that I had to complete. This is def not an easy A. It takes a ton of work to learn all the information about the songs/ artists AND learn over 50 songs by a 30 second clip. The tests have two parts: the history and listening section. Overall, it was a fun class, but don't take it if you can't dedicate lots of time to it
Andy is one of the funniest, kindest, and most enthusiastic professor's I've had in my time at IU. Lectures are hilarious: improv comedy, expose you to new music, tests aren't difficult if you put some time into them! He's always happy to talk anything music and creates a super fun engaging environment in the classroom.
Professor Hollinden is a very talented lecturer, he keeps his class engaged and it seems like when he talks about the material he really cares about it. With that being said the only class I've had to study more for has been anatomy. If you enjoy music take this class. If you want an easy A don't.
He's a fun dude, and he's super passionate about what he's teaching. I would definitely recommend attending class as much as possible because he doesn't put the notes on Canvas, and everything on the test will be emphasized in the lectures. He does not give any homework, so your grade is based solely off the exams.
This guy is amazing, Andy makes class fun and engaging so easily,
He is such an amazing professor. I would recommend taking any of his courses. He's knowledgable, hilarious, and overall just a good person.
Andy is the best professor I have ever had!!! The lectures aren't mandatory, but he is hilarious, energetic and an interesting lecturer, so I went to class everyday. There is no homework and only 4 exams, so it's important to study and pay attention in order to pass the class.
He is really a great teacher, he is funny and really knows a lot over this subject. There's 4 tests no other assignments. The tests are not hard if you study you just really need to listen to the music to get a good grade!
By far my most interesting class and engaging professor. He is really passionate and wants us to be excited to learn about music as well. There are no assignments, only exams. So it is important to study the songs and pay attention in class. I would recommend this to anyone who needs to fulfill a credit or who is just looking for a fun class.
Great guy who loves what he is talking about. Class is fun because you listen to music but you have to listen to the songs on the listening list because the listening part of the exam can be tricky.
I was 3rd in my class in HS and hated this class. I had to withdraw after getting a 68 on the first exam. It's not easy to get an A, and even an A- would hurt your GPA. Only 4 exams, so if you bomb one, you're toast. Tests are insanely hard. I'm finishing this sem with a 3.95, but if I would have stayed, I probably would have a 3.5. Terrible class.
The class is graded with 4 exams, but he has a comprehensive exam which can be used to replace your lowest test grade in the course. He knows what he is talking about in terms of the music and what happened to the artists. Overall great guy, but for the exams be ready to know the given song artists by heart alongside general information with them.
Great professor. Only take the class if you are interested in rock and roll.
Andy is a ray of sunshine. He is so knowledgeable and absolutely hilarious. I LOVED coming to his class and am already trying to take everything else he teaches. I will caution you, do not take his classes if you are not interested in rock music. Part of what makes them so fun is when students participate and banter with Andy.
A very good class with an instructor who is very compassionate and always willingly to help.
My third class with him and would gladly take more in the future. Only grades are from tests which can be tough but if you study for a couple days it's not bad.
Professor Hollinden makes his lectures very entertaining and fun which made the course much better for me. From my knowledge his courses are test heavy with little to no homework assignments.
Loved this professor! Super funny and engaging. You definitely do need to study as the only grades are tests and they are mostly memorization.
Amazing professor I loved going to class and am currently in Z202 because I enjoyed his class so much. 100% recommend such a fun class Andy is so funny and unhinged sometimes but such a cool guy. It was really nice having a class with no homework what so ever because the class is just exams. If you study the exams are pretty easy!
I took both Z201 and Z202 and Andy is the man. The classes only have exams, so you have to study for those. But aside from the four weeks you have tests the class is really chill. You should go to class because he's funny but he does post the lectures online and they're similar.
One of the best classes I have ever taken. You are only graded on four exams and then an optional makeup final exam. Attendance is not mandatory but the lectures are entertaining so try to go. Professor Hollinden is a great guy who is passionate for what he teaches. Take this class at all costs!
I'm only in the first semester of taking this class, but Im signing up for a second. If you like music, this class is such a joy and prof. is so so funny. Would 1000% take again.
Andy's class is a blast - improv, new music, and exams that are a breeze if you put in the work. Unstuckstudy was a huge help for studying the listening material.
I loved going into this class every time I had it. He was always so engaging and could get the whole class laughing. There are only 4 tests that make up your entire grade which can be annoying, but as long as you put in some effort to study you will do ok. I would recommend this class to anyone interested in music/music history.
I'm a skipper and I've never once missed a class just because I look forward to showing up every single day. Professor Hollinden makes class so fun. We listen to awesome music while the Professor cracks jokes. Exams are easy to study for; just play a song quiz with a friend and load your notes into Quizlet.
If you can take a class with Hollinden, defiantly do it. Beware, his class is graded on your average score on four 50 point exams. If you take this class, you'll have to go to almost every lecture (he doesn't post slides) and listen to the music more than you think. But he makes lecture so entertaining, you won't want to miss it.
This class is a fun gen ed, but it's fs not a blow off class. There's no homework, so it's easy for exams to creep up on you. It's best to listen to the playlists for weeks before an exam. The most important thing is to go to class!! He bolds important stuff and there are study guides with key terms. Take a few days to study and you'll be good.
ANDY IS AWESOME!! literlaly made my day. funny guy. would take a million of his classes.
Great Prof. and great lectures. Your grade is based on 4 tests and an elective comprehension test. You absolutely have to show up to lectures to do well on tests. He's hilarious in class and tells funny stories. Just be ready to study for his tests.
I love this class, it is fun to go to and he is pretty funny and personable. The only grades you get are with the 4 exams, there is no homework. You have to study 60-70 songs per exam as well as lecture material, but he posts listening-aids and highlights all important information in his slides.
One of the best, most fun classes I have ever take. Mr.Hollinden is the best and super funny. Class is super fun and its one of the only classes that I look forward to.
I had no prior experience with Rock music, but I took this as a recommended Gen-ED. I love his lectures and you can definitely substitute the lectures with the online versions, however, I believe that his class is enjoyable as it is. You do have to put effort and time into remembering and actually listening to the music, but Andy makes it fun!
Goated teacher. Sauced me up with a few points when I had a 89.5 in the class and rounded me to an A-, he also was giving out CD's in class. Hes a really cool guy, cracks a lot of jokes! If you're a softee and can't handle funny jokes don't take the class. GOATED teacher
