Very funny! Hated class, but loved Dr. J!
Good teacher but nitpicky tests
No Comments
Dr. Jorgensen is pretty fair altough his class can be rough going. He does diplay a genuine interest in his students although he can be very demanding.
great teacher...let's face it, chem's hard and he does a good job teaching it
No Comments
I hate chem, but Dr. J has a good sense of humor and good stategery... ;)
Dr. Jorgenson was unhelpful and although he must have a vast knowledge of chemistry since he has his docterate he is a horrible teacher. I am an A student and work very hard and I found him to be the worst teacher i've ever had
I love chemistry. I liked the class. Although, exams were TOO hard for gen. chem.
I thought that Dr. J was a good teacher. I definately learned a lot of chemistry that I will be able to apply to my further eduacation.
How you can be a good teacher when class size is 300+ is beyond me.
he is not a good teacher. very intimidating. avoid him at all costs possible. tests are way too hard.
too confusing, overhead notes were useless
in class dr. j is very intimidating. but when i went and saw him during his office hours he was very helful and nice. i learned alot from him and seemed to do fairly well on his tests.
He's a great teacher. He doesn't just lecture, he constantly challenges you to think and solve problems, so you reinforce/correct concepts. You need to study a bit every day to get the most out of class; 15 mins / day got me an A.
He knows what he is saying but doesn't know how to pass it on to his students. He is a jerk if you meet him in his office and could care less if you were there or not. I loved chemistry until I had him as a professor and I will never take him again.
Dr. J was an alright teacher. I loved chem in high school and did well in it. But, for this chem 1230 class was really bad. it might have been the way he teaches. i dont know, but i didnt care for this course.
He isn't a very good teacher. His tests were way too hard and now that I have moved on to the next level of Chem, I am doing much better then I did in his ridiculously hard class.
Hehehe...people complain after having him for 1 semester...due to my sport schedule, I had him for 3 semesters! He's a jerk, but if you study hard, you'll do well in his class
The key is to meet with him in his office hours. The classes are big, so get some personal time with him and run over your notes. You'll do well in the class, if you put in the time, enough said.
This guy seems to go out of his way to be mean. His teaching style made some people stressed.
Hard class, tests, and alot of work. Lots of outside help. Meet with him outside of class and he will go over everything with you. Very quick when responding to ?s and grading tests.
Hard tests, large workload tough to keep up. Can be friendly during his office hours but can also be a jerk.
Very tough. Gave some tough tests 2nd semester. One every one did horrible on and he didn't give much sympathy for us. The questions were tricky and we had not gone over many of the type of questions he asked on his tests. Study hard and you'll be okay.
his tests are extremely hard. especially compared to the other professors. you have to study everything! and most of the topics he stresses aren't even on the exam.
He talks during his exams, saying things like if you aren't on Question #7 by so and so time, "your peers are passing you by! You'll never get into med school!" I'd like to see him and Averill fight it out in a ring :)
If you can study chemistry on your own, you're fine in any chemistry class, and you'd have to in this one too. Jorgensen doesn't really help at all, his lectures just show what's in the book and if you ask him a question, he's cocky and never answers your question.
Jorgensen is a tough professor but really cares about his students. It's not impossible to get an A in his class, in fact about 20% of the class gets As or A-s on his exams. I would recommend taking his class instead of any of the other chem professors'.
Dr. Jogensen wasn't a bad professor, he just had pretty hard exams. I was able to get an A in his class although I had to study a lot more than I ever have for his exams. If you study hard and do all of the work you will be fine in this class.
Horrible Horrbile Horrible. I took him first semester and my grade was seriously affected by him. I talked to a friend of mine who got an A in gen. chem 1 with Strickland but second semester got a B- with Jorgensen. That shows something...
I don't know why so many people don't like this guy. He's actually really nice if you go to see him during office hours, and will do whatever he can to help you. His tests are ridiculously easy considering they're almost identical the tests he gave the year before (which you have access to online).
dr jorgensen is one of my favorite professors. he's so enthusiastic and makes the class interesting. the material is challenging, but he is willing to help and get to know as many of his students as possible. not to mention he dressed up as santa at our final and threw candy canes to everyone.
He's mean and vindictive.
dr. j is one of the most helpful profs i have ever had! i would take his class again in an instant!
He seems like a really nice guy in class... out of class he's a total jerk
the class and tests can be hard, but he really requires you to rely on yourself. The "review sesions" can be frustraiting and I don't find them helpful but one on one he explains things really well. He also takes time you get to know you, so don't be surprised to hear your name sometime in class!
I had Dr. J. for Chem 1230, and really liked him, so I took chem 1240 with him. BIG mistake. He's a great chem 1230 prof; his exams from the previous year were a great indicator of what was on this year's exams. His chem 1240 exams seemed to differ a lot more from last year. Take someone else.
DON"T TAKE THIS MAN!!! I took another professor for gen chem 1 and did great i only had to get about a 26 on the final to get an A. With Jorgenson i have failed 2 out of the 3 tests and the only one i passed i got like a 60 on. Yeah he is freaking hard and mean too. You shouldn't tell students to dr
Worst experience of my life. Dr. J seemed all enthusiastic in class but was a jerk otherwise. He flipped out on me online in the random chat area bc I mispelled kJ as KJ... that should tell u something. HARD! Take STrickland instead. he asks stupid facts on his tests that arent important compared to the main material. unfair.
I heard a lot of good things about old santa clause, so i took him for Chem 2. One of the requirements for class should be a bottle of KY Jelly. I studied more for this class than any other class and prayed to get above a C. This man is evil and stick with Sheri for 1240, but take Jorgy for 1230.
This class was stupid hard. I retook it with strickland and can't rec her highly enough. It's still a hard class, but it's achievable. Jorgensen gave me nightmares - 'You should know this!' in response to questions and criticism of his asinine tests is _unacceptable_. The tests aren't fair, period. They test nitpicky and uncovered mate

no time for anyone, only cares about his repuation, uses too many markers
This guy is ROUGH but you learn the material. If you want to learn Chemistry really well, he's got a lot of knowledge and is your guy. If you just want course credit, DO NOT take Jorgensen--you will die... and cry... a lot.
Avoid taking Jorgensen. His tests are out of this world and just too incredibly hard for a general chemistry class
People need to give this guy a break. He's a fantastic teacher! He's also a really nice guy. I feel he's the second best teacher I've ever had at UT. Besides, he looks like Santa....gotta give him a break on those grounds alone.
Dr. Jorgensen isn't a bad teacher...It's just...you really have to have a good background of the material and be willing to put in a lot of work if you want to achieve a high grade, but it can be done!
He's the best Chemistry teacher around.
This guy knows his chemistry well and is pretty nice. I went to his office and he was very helpful. His tests are harder than the other Gen Chem teachers though and he gives an incredibly large amount of work to do in the form of chapter outlines, class outlines, text problems, online quizzes, online homework, etc.
His class is outlandishly difficult. He has lecture outlines that you are expected to complete before class, and then answer clicker questions on them. He doesn't teach the material, he expects you to know it before you go to class. The tests are crazy, and the volume of work is just annoying not helpful.
Dr. J is enthusiastic about the subject of chemistry, but his teaching leaves something to be desired. He is not receptive to constructive criticism from students. Exams are difficult and material covered in lecture rarely appears on his tests. I would strongly advise not taking Dr. Jorgenson unless you feel the need to be challenged.
Avoid at all costs. If you're taking Chem 1230, take Mason or Schmidt instead. Both are way better teachers than this man. Rediculous loads of work for Gen Chem and exams are ludicrous. They don't even focus on the main topics he covers. He seems like a decent teacher until exam time. Only take if you really want to have your GPA challenged.
Definately take someone else if possible. His exams are ridiculously hard and their averages are much lower than the other professors' averages. Taking him WILL lower your GPA...
I was very skeptical on taking him from the negtive stuff i heard..i ended up liking him alot. You can tell he has alota passion for chem..prolly the only one...its not an easy class..provides lecture outlines and alota clicker questions so it helps you stay with the material you just have to keep up with the hw and reading all the time...not 2 bad
After I did fairly decent in Chem1230 with him, I thought I would be ok in 1240. I was WRONG. He was even worse. He expects you to know everything before coming to class and does not really teach anything which was frustrating because I had prior knowledge for material in 1230 but NOT 1240. Avoid taking him if you can...
Swear to God I got an A when I took his class but I think he is a cocky teacher and he doesn't listen to his students. He only cared about the university award he got last year when I was in his class and smiled like a fat pig while several kids were failing and/or dropping out like flies. I would have done things differently but UT sucks ****.
looks like colonel sanders. bad teacher doesn't care if kids pass or fail. he knows a LOT about chem but blows at teaching it. he was gone one week and thats about the only week i attended all the classes
Dr. Jorgensen looks exactly like Santa Claus. He could actually be considered an evil santa. Avoid taking him if possible. You must put in a lot of effort in order to succeed in this class. A lot of work on your own is necessary. If you're lazy or struggled in h.s. chem, avoid this class. I'd be screwed if I didn't know a little chemisty before.
This professor is very unclear and not very helpful. He acts like this is the only class you have and expects too much out of you.
Dr jorgensen is the worst possible chemistry teacher at UT. He barely teaches the class material, it seems like he just mentions things. He does not explain very well. He expects you to basically teach yourself outside of class. Why even have a teacher if we are learning everything by ourselves anyway. He is also very cocky and makes u feel stupid.
This man is the worst teacher I have had as of yet(like it could possibly be any worse). His personality is that of a jackass and his tests will have you screaming for anal lube. Honestly if I had not taken AP chem in highschool with a GOOD teacher I would now be completely screwed.
He sucks
Very good professor if you do the work. Keep up to date on everything and it isn't too hard to get an A
It is not a bad class as long as you keep up with work and try. The tests were normally not bad especially the math part. If you need help just visit him.
This is by far the worst teacher i have ever had. He expects you to know everything BEFORE you come to class and he explains nothing. His chicken scratch writing is nearly illegible and he thinks WAY to highly of himself. If you have a choice, DO NOT choose jorgensen as your teacher. His class is a useless waste of my time and efforts.
I liked him. Ya he's hard but its college, what did you expect? He gives you what you need to do well. He provides lecture outlines which really helps pin point the important concepts. It's a lot of work but you actually learn something in his class.
Great teacher! Goesw in depth and explain in class and with his lecture notes. He expects you to fill out the notes before class and ask questions in class. I would reccommed this teacher as long as you plan on attending class
At all costs do not take Jorgensen. Seriously, anyone is better than him in a non-biased opinion. His test are unfair and his test averages are in the 60's. Do not expect to pass his class with an A at all. This is not the teacher to take.
At all costs do not take Jorgensen. Seriously, anyone is better than him in a non-biased opinion. His test are unfair and his test averages are in the 60's. Do not expect to pass his class with an A at all. This is not the teacher to take.
Tough professer, expects you to read the text and have an understanding of it before class. He goes through material very fast & has bad handwriting. Also very condescending. Its not impossible to get a good grade if you do your work.
This guy needs to retire. HE SHOULD NOT BE IN THE CLASSROOM!
He expected the students to know everything before they walked through the door. If you went after class to ask a question, he made you feel like you were an idiot and shouldn't be asking questions. I absolutely HATED his class and regret not listening to all of the warnings about his awful teaching skills. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS WITH JORGENSEN!!
Absolutely awful. I consider myself a good student but his test are ridiculous hard. You literally have to know everything about everything to even get a decent grade. At all costs, take someone else. JORGENSON IS HORRIBLE!!!!
Andy really knows what he's talking about, and if you go to class and pay attention, it's not that hard.
Jorgenson's class was much harder than it should have been. He went through the notes in class too quickly and often didn't bother to show how to work out the math problems. However, I've found that if you go to his office hours regularly, you will find that he is very helpful if you ask the right questions. I just wish he would do this in class!
Very tough to understand. Wish I would have checked this site before blindly picking a prof. Expects you to know everything before class. He doesn't fill in lecture outline on the overhead, only 1-2 words and expects you to have the rest filled in already. Very tough prof and makes things a LOT harder than they need to be.
If you don't have a very strong chemistry background DO NOT take Jorgensen! He goes through notes too quickly and does not work out the math. He also feels the need to tear down everyone on a daily basis and make them feel stupid. If you don't attend class you miss a lot of points. Possibly one of the worst educators I've ever experienced.
Worst prof ever. If you can stay away, don't take him. Can't read his writing. Doesn't actually teach you. No extra credit. No curve. Make sure you fill out the notes before you get there because he does not teach.
Jorgensen is not as hard as everybody says he is. As long as you put enough time into comprehending the materials that is presented, you will do fine in the class. He is very attentive to blackboard making him very easy to reach and also encourages students to go to his office hours to ask him questions if they have any and answers them well.
Alright here we go as a pre-med/chem major I found myself thinking ha gen chem so easy. HA wrong its a hard subject, but if you study youll be golden. This prof is not as hard as everyone makes him to be just study, read and youll be fine. Hes a stern guy but if you sit in front rows and listen youll get at least a C. Fellow future doctors take him.
If you dont have a good understanding of chem do not take him, he does not teach during class because he expects you to teach yourself before the class. If you get him read all his notes thoroughly because he puts random questions from his notes on the tests and make sure you do the previous tests
He is very smart, but is not helpful at all. Tons of students struggle, but he blames it on over-confidence. He fails to realize that it's because he mentions what we should have taught ourselves, rather than teaching it to us.
He is an alright professor who definitely knows what he is talking about. Gives quite a bit of online homework, which can be frustrating at times but just find people or email him. His tests can be tough sometimes really tricky so study a lot before. He gives you notes for class so fill in what you know that's in the book before attending class.
Tests are crazy hard. He does not teach the material, at all. He teaches as if you already know everything he knows. If you can avoid taking him, do it.
jorgsensen is by far the worst professor that UT has. he fails a ton of his students and chemistry is a hard subject as it is,it is made 100x harder by him. class averages were in the high40s/low 50s. AVOID HIM. not worth it
While this class is difficult, a good grade can be achieved. The tests require a lot of studying beforehand, but you can be successful if you REALLY WORK AT IT. Depending on how you learn, attending class might not help. It's not a class to take lightly. Always answers questions or tells you where to look if you're prompt.
He is a horrible professor. He does not explain anything and expects that you already know a lot of chemistry. He acts like it is super easy and expects notes to be done before class. I took 2 chemistry classes in high school and got good grades with no effort and failed 3 out of 4 of his exams even though I studied a lot.
Worst professor I've had in college. If you have the option to take someone else's class, do it. He is lazy and is more concerned about his research than the subject material he is supposed to be teaching. Makes trick questions on exams and expects a ridiculous amount of time from his students when he doesn't seem to put much time into the course.
You have to actually pay attention in class otherwise your not gonna get far in this class. Most of what he repeats in lecture is on the exam, his exams are difficult, but he likes to push his students. the text is very helpful. If you are looking to put the least amount of effort in don't take this class. take if you want to remember the info.
Everyone saying that he is a "bad" professor is being unfair. He is difficult, not hard. There is a difference. Be prepared to read before class and study for exams. He is very clear on his policies and what to expect on exams. All questions on exams will come from homework and old exams so you can't really be surprised.
Homework is assigned every week. Tests are difficult and he likes to add trick questions so beware. Clicker points and writing assignments are essential to boost your grade. Offers extra credit for visiting speakers. Gives lecture outlines to follow in class. Difficult class and you need to do all your work and then some to get an A.
I found this class to be extremely difficult. He expects you to have prior knowledge on how to do chemistry. Unless you have had Chemistry in high school you will struggle. I did not have any chemistry classes and found the course to be my hardest class of this semester. He likes to often make trick questions worth the most points on exams.
Jorgensen made this class challenging, but I learned a lot. He is very good about answering questions online and in class. Plus he tries to start his lectures with a little bit of chemistry humor which is appreciated.
The test were unfairly hard compared to the other professors'. He doesn't care about your grade. At least he tries to help.
He's not helpful at all and expects you to have learned most of the material before even entering the class. His writing is barely readable and expects you to fill in the notes before class, doesn't do many practice problems, it's basically a self taught class. He was a horrible prof. If you don't have an extensive chem background do not take him.
He seems to be somewhat condescending because he has a Ph.D. He knows the material very well but his lectures tend to be boring (to be fair I'm not that interested in chemistry). It gets annoying when he makes snide political remarks in a chemistry class... leave that B.S. for humanities professors.
Jorgiepoo is a great prof but a little tough, especially if you are taking him freshman year. He really knows his stuff but he can also be tough on you because of it. Be sure to do the past exams and you will do fine on the exams.
People don't like him because he expects work to be done outside of class. Show up to recitation and do ALEKS for an easy 200 points. He gives old exams which are almost identical to the exams we took. Chem 1 is a class that requires actual studying, which some people struggle to understand.
This class was the most difficult class I've ever taken. Lectures can be confusing so you have to read a lot and go to office hours. I learned more from the book & ALEKS than lecture. I wouldn't recommend him, but most people in our class got a C or above, so it's not a "weed out" class despite what a lot think. It's really hard but doable.
Jorgensen is a tough professor but he is very clear on what he expects to be done in order to recieve a good grade. I got a B in his class and honestly I didn't get the best grades on his tests I averaged about C's on the tests because their hard. However Aleks and the recitation grade really helped my grade out so do the homework go to recitation.
Dr. Jorgensen is an awesome professor. Highly intelligent and passionate about what he's teaching. He's flexible and understanding if you have issues that arise. I wish I could take more classes with him!
Absolutely loved Dr. J. His explanations were great and he always answered emails within minutes of sending them. He makes class fun to partake in and always shoots out random facts or fun little interjections. HIGHLY recommend him!! Great great professor
Worst professor I have ever had. Avoid taking his class at all costs. Doesnt teach at all. Reads off of slides that he wants certain things filled out before class which makes there no point in going to class because he just reads over points on a slide. Answers questions quick and carelessly moves too fast. Worst, lazy, rude, and awful professor.
Lectures are pointless, he rarely teaches anything. He expects you to answer all of the questions on his lecture slides the day before he presents them while also reading the whole chapter. Tests are extremely difficult compared to what is actually given to us.
There are 3 mid terms and a final exam and are worth 500 points out of the 705 available for this semester. He will go over a few problems in class but the rest is all up to you. The notes are just PowerPoint slides that he reads in class. He will give questions in the notes but you have to read the textbook to find the answers and it’s difficult
This is the professor they warned you about in high school. He expects you to have every answer to every question before class. Then he will go through how to do problems, but he will do this at lightspeed. He is hard to follow and he expects us to know everything.
I dont know why everyone is hating on him, he's not that bad and kinda funny. He answers questions super fast if you email him and wants to work with you to get a good grade. The class itself is challenging and reading the book before class is super helpful.
Classes are pointless as he wants you to learn everything before you show up and if you do go to class all he will do is read a PowerPoint to you. Some of the problems on the exams do not line up with the examples given in class. He will call the class pathetic if most get a question wrong.
Avoid him if you can. As a person he's pretty nice. As a professor he makes you do everything yourself the whole semester. You teach yourself the content. I passed because of SI so make sure to go to that if you end u in his class. Homeworks and participation balance out the tests pretty well though. He doesn't use his own material. Again, avoid!
He expected you to already know everything he was about to teach you. He also called us pathetic when we didn't understand a simple concept. You definitely can take his class if you are willing to put that much extra work into a general chemistry. I would never recommend him to anyone that had the option of a different professor. Never again.
