If you are contemplating whether or not to take chem with this guy, don't. He covers more material than any other chem 121 teacher(he told us in class) forcing you to intake a lot of material in very little time. His grading scale is retarded. I worked hard on a project hoping it would raise my grade, i got a 95% and my grade dropped. do not take
never ever take this class!!!! all he does in the class is reading off from the notes.random stuff on the test/quiz. pre-lab and lab reports are pain in the ass(take off pt in most random things). no review for the tests. he thinks he's teaching in harvard. very hard to get an A in his class. it's very challenging but it's not worth it.
If you want to learn chemistry, this is the guy to take. I learned more in this class than any other class I have taken at Harper.
very hard class so don't take his section if you are a slacker like me.
Ok, ill be honest. Hes a good teacher, but very unclear as to what he wants you to do for labs (he expects you to know, by reading labs the night before). He is VERY HARD and teaches (as someone said earlier)as if he were at Harvard. But if you want to learn chemistry well, and you have time to put into this class, then i would recommend this class
this class is HARD!! He honestly, as it has been said before, thinks he is teaching at Harvard. Test, quizes, and labs SUCK! Everything they have said below is true. He is a really nice guy and if you want to learn chemistry, take his class because there isnt a better one out there but if you just need a lab credit like I did, drop it!!!
He is a great Chemistry Professor. He loves his work and he tries to instill his love in you. If you aren't taking this class as a professional student, then find someone else, or take chm 101. He is (IMHO) the most approachable teacher at Harper.
Don't take him. He is so hard and his exam is more harder than him. if u want to pass this class with "c" than u can take him. he is very smart but i would prefer not to take him
His honors section was very challenging. He incorporates far more into CHM 121 than I thought would be included in this course. If science is your focus, take it. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?
Incredibly energetic and knowledgible professor. If you want to learn chemistry, take him. Explains topics extremely well and is easily able to go into depth on the topic and explain the importance of the subject. Uses clear examples and is very willing to help any student. Has genuine passion fr teaching this subject.
(Honors section) It's not so much that this class is hard, but it's a lot of work and not everything is easy to comprehend. Andy is super about explaining things over and over. His notes are much better than the book. You probably don't have to buy the text or at least get an older version. He is the best professor I've ever had.
Andy is a very easy going guy. You can tell that he loves teaching chemistry, and he is good at explaining all the material. Also, if he sees that you are working hard and that you care about the class, then he will give you the benefit of the doubt. I had a borderline grade, and he gave me the higher one. Definitely take his class!
He is very good teacher and highly energetic. He is very friendly, his exams are little hard, but not tough, if u follow his materials. Overall he is very good teacher with brilliant mind and personality.
Speaks quickly, but he's succinct, so you learn A LOT. He has an amazing drive to make you understand the material, citing topics/issues that are relevant today, so you'll live those "aha!" moments quite frequently. The class might feel laid-back; however, the tests are anything but! You definitely have to study, but he makes chem refreshingly fun!
I thought he was a good teacher but no he teaches us as if we are chemists and we need to know the chemical compounds of a bomb. I did not understand what he was saying the class was unclear and what we were talking about did make any sence.i always went to lecture and i was always seeking help.so i dont know who's in fault here.
great teacher but expects a lot. ALWAYS willing to help and clarify anything. very clear during class but talks very quickly. always willing to re-explain though. you absolutely must study or you will fail, no joke watsoever. before you sign up for his class, email me at [email protected] and i'll tell u everything u need to know.
Andy rocks the house! Study hard and pass; slack-off and fail!
an extreamly good teacher!!!!!! will help u if u ask him. test are very hard, but u can still pull of a c even if u fail a few tests, and get a D on one of them. i took him in the fall of 2007 and got 2 D's on his tests and a B on one of them and i still ended up with a B in the class thaks to the "BONUS". hes a very good person too, and very smart
really helpful and really clear, there is alot of extra stuff but its really easy and off sets the impact that a test has in your final grade. you can fail two tests and as long as you do the extra stuff still get an A in class. really good teacher, take him if you can
he was very clear in everything.... his syllabus was clear and everything was available online. there was alot of extra homework but it helped with points... i failed all three tests and did almost no homework but because of the labs and the bonus i ended up with a C. He is very helpful in explaining what you need to know
all of the material and the online homework material is super easy but his exams are horrible. on almost all of the exams, the class average is around 60% and he seems very, very happy about that, which doesn't make much sense to me. he needs to stop reading useless powerpoint slides and actualy solve problems in class.
he is HOT!!!!! other than that he is useless.
He is the most knowledgable teacher i have met. It had been about a yr ago since i had last taken Chem. but his notes (which is the whole material for the course) on line was great because all you had to do was be prepare to ask questions from homework.Plus his always available if you have questions.Read labs before lab day.you can get an A
Kidwell is very hard and very challenging. He is also very helpful, and will meet with you any time one-on-one to help explain anything you do not understand. He is the smartest teacher I have ever met and so much enthusiasm! If you are planning to take the next Chem class, take his class. You will learn a lot!
Kidwell is a great teacher who is very enthusiastic and willing to help students. Would definetly take him again for a future science class if I get the chance.
He is a very nice teacher, however I would never take his class again. First of all his tests are impossible. Through out the whole semester the class percentage for tests was a 45%, which is failing. I would never take him again because of his narcisistic behavior and inability to communicate to his students.Do not take him unless you want to fai
He talks teaches/talks way too fast. Final project is easy but almost everyone fails his tests.
Kidwell is an amazing professor. He has a genuine interest for the subject and does his best to help his students understand the material. In CHM 121 he is fairly easy, but his exams are kind of difficult. My advice: read the BOOK, study and work through his past exams and it is very possible to get an A. Very approachable and a very kind man!!!!
He knows his stuff pretty well! but Honestly his test are IMPOSSIBLE even though how hard you study for them it's impossible to get higher than a C i mean he TEACHES at a HARVARD level ...i mean come on and his test are equivalent to HONOR'S CHEMISTRY ...I know this for a FACT !!!! sooo please if i were u try taking a different professor.... :)
There is nothing good to say about this teacher. The person who said he is narcisistic hit it right on the nose. His tests are impossible and he could care less if you get the material or not. I wouldn't treat a dog the way he treats some of his students. Out of all the teachers at Harper he is the most worthless they have on staff.
He talks too fast and hard to understand. Too much pre labs, post labs, and lab reports. You won't even get time to focus on your other classes.
Mr. Kidwell is animated, intelligent and enjoys his subject matter. However, the bulk of his students flunk his tests. This does not seem to bother him, he even seems somewhat proud of it. But if the majority of his students can?t pass his exams, he is failing to teach and I believe that is what he is supposed to be there for.
Great teacher. Knows his stuff and explains it well. Gets the class involved with little effort. Tests are hard, but if you are dedicated, you should have no problem in this class. Decided to take him twice because he was so good. As long as you put in the effort and pay attention, you'll do fine.
I really enjoyed his class throughout the semester. He will always try his best to answer your Questions and/or concerns. He has in-built Curve system for grading, which really is effective and helpful. I think it would be misinformed decision to ignore Mr. Kidwell?s class just based on other ratings. He will add more dimensions to chemistry.
He is really bright and intelligent person. His class es are very informative and fun. If you do well in his class, the standardize test would be a breeze for you. I recommend you to take his class. It may not be the easiest class but its defiantly worth it. Enough said.
Really cool professor. Prepares you for University level courses. Outstanding teaching. He makes sure that you understand the material. His exams might be tough, but just hang in there. He'll help you as much as possible so one can understand Chemistry.
I took Kidwell for General Chemistry I, the Honors section in the fall of 2009. I learned A LOT! I did not even buy the book, so don't waste your money because he provides very comprehensive notes. He is a very difficult teacher, but you will learn and succeed if you work hard!
BEST CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR EVER!!!(so far) Very clear explanations and instructions. Defiantly Prepares you for higher level challenging courses, in my opnion. Worth it.
Good class. Made chemistry fun. Not the easiest class but lots of learning. Intelligent guy.
Awesome teacher. Blew my mind evertime I came to class. Just wish I could have taken info in as fast as he was giving. Must be my ADHD. Tests were very hard or maybe I just didn't study hard enough. You must study if you want to succeed in this class. Homework completion is a must. It's a very hard class but take home knowledge is rewarding.
The best teacher ever
A good teacher. Looks like he likes what he is doing. However,in the class he goes over the easy stuff, not spending too much time for explaining how to solve problems. Doesn't do any exam reviews, very often doesn't teach the whole lecture, letting go earlier, and what is really nice of him, but he better spend this time on teaching chm.
ABANDON ALL HOPE, YE WHO ENTER HERE. Prof. Kidwell is an extremely knowledgeable man, but he talks very fast. PRINT OUT HIS NOTES. If you feel like dropping after the first test, that's normal. The rest of the tests aren't "that" bad. Class lectures were fun, but tests were very challenging. If you try hard, you will learn A LOT in this class.
His lectures are mind blowing! He has a weird grading scale but it's in your best interest. His tests are hard. You must study, BUY the solutions manual! Easy to approach and helpful. When you get to the final you will be WELL prepared! Awesome Teacher
Great Teacher. this is a real college class you learn a lot. Practice his old exams on blackboard, read, study, pay attention in class and you will do fine. In the end you will be glad you took his class.
Such a nice guy, but difficult material. He goes very fast, and if you miss one class, be prepared to work your butt off to catch up! There's a lot of out-of-class work. He really knows what he's talking about, almost always has an answer [even to off the wall questions] and genuinely gets excited about the topic at hand.
Mostly teaches from lectures. Has class notes prepared, so really engages the student to actually listen and comprehend rather than just scramble for notes. Moves at the pace most of the class learns, so attention is paid as necessary. Very helpful and knowledgeable. Difficult class, but he makes it fun.
Amazing professor!!! He's really smart and very helpful. I started loving chemistry after taking his class. He talks a little fast but you can ask him for help anytime. This guy is a genius. Take him, you'll love chemistry.
This class is hard. If you take him be prepared to do lots of work. He is helpful and gives you resources to help you. He does talk fast and explains things too fast. His tests are really really difficult and unless youre already good at that kind of stuff then youll have to work hard to pass. Hes a great teacher though and the class was fun.
he definitely knows what he is talking about, very intelligent when it comes to the topic at hand. he talks WAY too fast and goes through material WAY too fast. he's not very clear and if you get behind at all, well, GOOD LUCK TO YOU. he's not very helpful even one on one. i would not take his class again.
Kidwell is very difficult. you have to study to pass. he tries his best to explain the info but its too confusing. but he tries so hard to help out his students! 3 tests, each lab has a quiz (easy) and like 3-4 general quizzes before test. and the easiest semester project. just pay attention and ask ALOT OF QUESTIONS
The learning experience was tremendously hampered by this unbelievably narcissistic sycophant and his undeservedly pompous attitude; it was painfully obvious that he fancies himself an educator at a prestigious institution, but in reality he is just a boorish poser alienating students and serving as a clown to amuse those who know higher education.
While Mr. Kidwell is very knowledgeable about science and willing to help anyone who asks, his class is almost impossible to keep up with. He talks very fast and skims over the topics far too quickly, and while we are on Chapter 2 notes he expects us to complete labs that are two chapters ahead. Tests are extremely difficult.
I expected this class to be time consuming but I underestimated it. You really need to study, read the chapters(ahead since he goes really fast), and complete all the homework which can take a while. Kidwell's tests are really hard, but prepare you well for the final. He also assigns pre/postlabs and lab reports, some lab reports need to be formal.
I was in the Honor's section of this class and most of us felt like dropping after both the first and second exams. Read: This is perfectly natural! Kidwell has the most difficult exams in the entire Chemistry department, but when you look at the final you will outright laugh at how simplistic it is. Grading scale helps. You will learn a lot!
I whole-heartedly agree w/post on 7/31/12. Knew this class wouldn't be easy, but he made it unnecessarily difficult. Talked way too fast, used a book that didn't explain anything, online homework way too time-consuming. Will only help if you ask questions, but he constantly interrupts & answers what he thinks you are going to say. Awful teacher!
he speaks very fast and he makes impossible tests. the class average for each test is around a 15 out of 45.
A truly intelligent man, knows his material well and is always open for one on one time with students. This class is difficult but Andy gives many opportunities to balance any bad test grades out with other assignments. Very approachable, relatable and kind. Awesome teacher. A shame he doesn't teach Chem 2.
incredibly knowledgeable. tests are very difficult, but he curves very nicely. 27/40 on the exam was seen as an A by him. He dropped your lowest exam score with the score on the final exam. I averaged 24 on the tests, and then got a 94% on the final, which then brought my average up to a 31/40 on my exams. I got an A in the class
The best teacher for science I've had in a while. He is very personable and always willing to help with problems and labs! Comes in early to help. Test a VERY hard but he tries to curve them accordingly. The online homework is more important that I thought it was so make sure you do it. He wants everyone to do well
Professor Kidwell is great, extremely knowledgeable about chemistry. Very interesting lectures that make a two hour class go by in a flash. Tests are difficult by design, he wants to actually test your knowledge! If you are willing to put in the time, you will love this class. He truly made me love chemistry. I will miss this class next semester.
His, "one size fit all" teaching style is not effective. He should change his teaching style to fit ALL of his students. In fact most of our class was lost. He makes the class harder than it should be. He makes simple algebra seem harder! As a teacher you should remain humble. something I think you need work on. Do you even enjoy teaching?
He is fun and knowledgeable. He has an interesting side story for every concept of chemistry. It is really unfortunate he does not teach 122. The tests are hard, but curved a lot. If you do all the homework and all the labs you will be fine.
I loved Andy''s class He gave very interesting lectures and it was clear that he was extremely knowledgeable in Chemistry. To be honest this class is going to be challenging as well as very time consuming. I highly recommend going to his office hours. Andy is very helpful and wants his students to succeed. STUDY STUDY STUDY
Great teacher. His tests are very difficult in relation to other teachers. If you want to do very well on them be ready for a time crunch. Sometimes goes on interesting tangents and yet still has enough time to cover all of the material. He prepares you very well for the final. Oh and attend class or you will get sunk big time.
His class sucks. Lectures dont even include almost anything that the homework assignments are asking about. He always goes over the time in class and his always taking about some story trying to connect it to lecture. Hes disorganized and talks too fast. Theres no point in coming into class, im sure youll understand more just reading the book.
The professor knows what he's talking about but he just goes on and on and doesn't seem to stop, so it's annoying when you take notes. He doesn't seem to understand how bogus Mastering Chemistry is, and yet he complains that half the students fail because the homework system is flawed beyond belief.
He is an awesome teacher. If you are a chem major, this is the class for u. U have to work to get ur grade. The class is super interesting but a lot of work. U will feel like ur failing the whole semester and at the end u get a good grade.
Really awesome teacher and super nice. He goes through materials pretty fast though. If you need it, he is more than happy to stay after class to help you out! Super tough class so you really need to come every day and pay attention- not just on lab days!
Professor Kidwell is a great professor. his class Is so hard. but is there to help you whenever you need it. I learned a lot. must do all labs and homework in order to succeed. makes you work for your grade but overall great professor.
Professor Kidwell's class was super challenging. You really have to work to receive a good grade. His lectures go by so fast, but his tests are super hard. The class averages usually were around 18 points out of 40. But don't freak out, you'll still probably do good in the class even with that score. He's super friendly and helpful, give him a try!
Super cool and really enjoys his job. He does a great job at answering questions and helping students understand the material. Makes class very fun. Homework is pretty basic, Mastering Chemistry once a week with a prelab and post lab due as well. the tests are pretty hard but he curves them a lot so you wont do too awful.
Total G. My 121/Honors class learned a great deal about Chemistry and life after only 16 weeks of the Andy Kidwell Experience (AKE). You will definitely have to earn your grade, but he's totally not a sadist about it. Well, sometimes he is, but you eventually come to terms with it. The point is, Harper and planet Earth need more people like him.
I had him for honors chemistry. Honestly, it's a tough class--he makes you work for your grade, but I always felt like I had a deeper understanding of the material and was very well prepared for the final compared to other CHM121 classes. The class is tough, and he recognizes that, so he makes it pretty easy to get your A as long as you deserve it.
A very nice teacher and always there for help if you need it. His tests are very hard but you can end up failing every exam and still get a high grade in the class if you do your homework and assignments and prove that you work hard. He's very dedicated to his work and you can tell that it's his passion. Highly recommend him.
He literally changed my life. I changed my major from Biology to chemistry after taking his class. I don't think you will find another class of the same intellectual level at any community college. Beside the GREAT lectures, he prepares you to be precise and accurate in scientific field in general. The exams are challenging but fun to take...
Mr. Kidwell is an AMAZING teacher. You can tell he really loves his job and chemistry. His tests are tough but doable. He understands the tests are tough and helps you out in other areas. Super awesome guy, makes chemistry lectures fun but understandable. You can tell he is super smart and cares about his students. I definitely recommend him!
The biggest issue I had with kidwell was that he never handed back graded assignments. I never knew my grade throughout the semester. The best he could do was "ballpark it" based off test scores. Also, the final is nothing like the other tests. It is all conceptual questions. There was no calculator use. I wish I knew this before the final.
I really wanted to hate him, but I couldn't. He is a cool guy, but he would be better at a 4 year institution. Harper is a community college meaning that when you transfer to a 4 year school GPA is everything and taking him won't help your grade. Insane tests, a lot of homework (that do not really help for the test), lectures do not help w/ test.
Even though I hate chemistry, Andy Kidwell's energy and positivity made this class actually fun. I would not recommend skipping class, because there is a lot of content to go through, but he is very approachable and always excited to answer questions in and outside of class. There is a lot of homework, however, but it is good practice.
I think he teaches more difficult concepts than other professors, but he is still a good teacher. I got only like 18 out of 35 for 3 exams and was not confident after final. I expected B or C actually but I got an A! He has a special grading system so don't panic after exams. There is online hw which is time-consuming but good for preparing exams
Get ready to be absolutely lost in this class. He talks way too fast. He does not understand that students do not come into his lecture as Chemistry majors. There are no study guides, extra practice problems, worksheets, etc for you to understand the material. & mastering chemistry has no benefit whatsoever bc google. I urge you, DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
Kidwell is truly a knowledgeable guy but when it comes to teaching he really could not be more confusing. I don't know whether I should write or listen. He's so fast! I just wish there were less Mastering Chemistry assignments due one after another. It's far too time consuming and leaves you with little to no time to actually sit down and study:(
this man is the smartest person ive ever met in my life. he's a genius but you gotta be ready and willing to do the work and learn from him. best class i took at Harper. challenging and interesting, also he's a genuinely nice guy 11/10
Andy is a great teacher! He is always willing to stay after class and answer questions. He also genuinely seems to love his job and is very enthusiastic during lectures and whenever discussing chemistry. His tests are harder than other teachers but he gives extra points for homework/lab so that it is still just as easy, if not easier, to get an A.
Kidwell is the smartest man ever. He has so much knowledge on such a broad range of topics, not just chemistry! His lecturing style is fast, and he throws a lot of knowledge at you at once, also goes off on tangents a lot. He frequently has an anecdote for every chemistry concept that ties the abstract things to real world examples.
Kidwell knows his stuff and prepares you for future chemistry courses. He does not post grades on Blackboard, so you will have to meet up with him to find out an estimate of your grade. Do the homework and practice tests online to prepare for exams.
Kidwell is the best chemistry professor I have ever had. He is caring for his students and he really makes you work hard for a good grade. You'll have to discuss with him privately for your grade in the class - overall, he is such a smart teacher. He talks fast, and is lecture heavy, but he is worth the effort! The guy deserves the best.
Great Professor. Clear in both what he expected for the class and the material all the while being very fair with the courses schedule. He does have a tendency to go a little fast but he does slow down and adds emphasis on the critical aspects of sed lecture and labs (which aren't too bad with his explanation). Overall, a great choice imo
One of the biggest mistakes I made at harper. He talks so slow and low voice that you literally fall asleep. He is very unclear in his lectures and gives way too much homework. Class average for tests is like 34% and he is ok with that. This professor is a huge fail at Harper and was reported by my classmate. Not a bad person but horrible teacher
This class is hard on its own, and Kidwell is very nice and does what he can to help you succeed, but I wouldnt take him again.
One of the best professors at Harper. If you're looking to actually learn about concepts of chemistry take him!
Andy Kidwell is clearly knowledgeable in chemistry and it's relevant applications to all the sciences. Chemistry is not very easy to conceptualize and Mr. Kidwell does a fantastic job of providing analogies and examples to help understand and conceptualize certain topics. He wants you to actually know the WHY. He is also very flexible if you talk.
He's very understanding, allowed me to submit homework late multiple times. He writes tests so the average is 50%, but he has his own curving system? My advice: majority of the time, his lectures are overcomplicating things. I got an A on every test by just memorizing everything on his lecture notes (he posts them). Passionate about work and caring
Hands down the most interesting chemistry professor Ive ever had, I was paying attention to what he was saying and Id learn most of the material in the class. That being said, it will hurt your grade to skip classes, even though he doesnt keep attendance. Would love to take him again for CHM122, but it might not be possible due to the schedule.
Prof. Kidwell is kind and his lectures are out of this world. He is a tough grader and his exams are unquestionably challenging although he curves them. I'd recommend completing all hw assignments efficiently to boost your grade as much as possible and pay attention to (and revise) lectures because he talks fast. He made me like chemistry.
Kidwell is clearly passionate about chem, and he writes IMPOSSIBLE tests. Because of this, he creates a really stressful environment for his students. If you take him, you will probably be extremely stressed during the semester. That being said, if you show him that you are working hard and deserving of an A, you will get one. Study his notes.
Professor Kidwell is unbelievably brilliant, incredibly kind, and overwhelmingly passionate about the world around him. At times when Chemistry concepts seem most challenging, Kidwell would craft well-versed and detailed metaphors to greatly simplify the difficult ideas. Professor Kidwell provides all necessary tools to academically succeed.
He was amazing as a chem teacher he really cares about chemistry and will answer any question you have, goes kind of fast in class lecture but honestly I got average on every test but passed with a B an just make sure to do all of the hw its a big part of your grade
His lectures are fast, and to understand. If you dont have any background in chemistry dont take him. Class average for his exams is 37%, only take him if you majoring in chemistry.
Okay he is legit amazing!!!!! Yeah the test averages are low but u can still get an A in the class. I got 32% on my first exam but I just kept working hard and I got an A in the class. I would also sometimes go to his office hours and he was very straight forward. Such a nice guy!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND dont freak out if u get bad score on the first e
When the semester began I thought the class was hard to grasp because of the complex content. Students were trying to transfer his class because he lacks the ability to teach. I thought they were simply blaming him. After one word email answers to complex homework problems I asked for help on during covid; I eventually came to the same conclusion.
I have taken MANY online classes at Harper, most of which were science classes WITH labs. Kidwell is the worst online teacher I've had. This class was listed as online anytime, yet is filled with arbitrary due dates. I take online anytime classes to make sure I can balance school and work, but Kidwell must have missed the ANYTIME part of online.
please please please do not take him. It has been a month taking this online class of his. He just throws work at you like nothing. This class was meant to be "online anytime" but really isnt. The worst professor I have taken. I have already decided to drop his class!!!
RUN AWAY! He is NO help. You have to teach yourself EVERYTHING in the class. Doesn't give specific information while grading. When you ask a question, he responds like you should already know the answer. Gives specific due date for a class that is considered online anytime. Doesn't have students best interest at heart. Doesn't care for you to pass
lectures are clear and easy to understand. I am sure his class would be much more bearable in person. He assigns 5hr+ homework + 3hr+ lab assignment and 5h+ worth of lectures every week. You might be able to see how this can easily snowball into an impossible amount of overdue work. Dont take this class if you are enrolled in others.
Tests are impossible. The averages were 59% and 49% for the two exams, neither are curved only the final. The second one brought me down from a 94 to 82. I did hw, got almost 95% on all labs, but I fail an exam that is a self fulfilling prophecy and I can't get an A anymore. Save yourself. He's a good guy to talk to, but the class is a clown fest.
He is a good professor overall. Online lab was difficult, but he would respond to your questions through email and will make sure that you understand it. Exams are quite difficult. He grades fairly. He also gives extra credit opportunity by the end of the semester.
Homework every week, plan to spend some time on it, or just Chegg all of it. He's really intelligible and can be reached very easily. He'll meet with you and can answer anything, seriously. The final is curved - and he offers an exam "buyback"(the final curved % will also change your lowest exam) - The average after curve is 75%, plan accordingly.
Not respectful of testing accommodations. Has no clue how to teach virtually. Don't ask for help, he wont give any.. Nothing useful anyways
Honestly his personality is ok, but he can be quite sarcastic at times. Prepare to spend hours on end each week to watch his YouTube lectures, which can get very boring very fast. I would have given Kidwell a higher score if his tests weren't so cryptic and difficult. I am an honors student at Harper and still got a 65% between the two exams.
Very vague answers. All over the place in lectures. Incredibly unorganized blackboard. Too demanding. Makes you feel incompetent often. Asking questions; (he feels) 'is something you should already know.' With answers like that you won't know. Assigns pre/post labs due 6 hours after class time. No exceptions. Keep the day of you lab completely open
Just Don't.

Accessible lectures and accessible notes that you can print out and go over with him in his videos. While monotone, he explains Chem concepts extremely well and has a memorization system in place for all his notes. Mr. Kidwell provided a secure foundation for learning and thinking about concepts that made a big class more digestible.
Professor Kidwell is incredibly bright and I am amazed by his wealth of knowledge. Professor Kidwell cares about his students and he takes the time to carefully explain concepts as necessary. Overall, Professor Kidwell is organized and supplies his students with all of the materials for success. By far, I have learned the most in his Honors class!
Professor Kidwell is knowledgeable. But you had to be very careful when you take his class. There is a lot of homework on master chemistry (each homework is over 3+hour to complete). He is also very strict on Lab, too. All in all, if you do not have much knowledge about chemistry, please don't take his class.
He's a true scholar, knows a lot about many fields. Read the book to do well on the hw and exams. Easy grader on labs, try to not be completely off from the accepted values. Exams are not too difficult. Felt overly prepared for the ACS final. ACS final was a cakewalk.
His exams are extremely difficult, but because of that I studied even more and then did great on the final. As a professor, he truly knows what he's doing, and if you put in the effort, you will earn an A. Responds quickly to emails, understanding, and is always open to student concerns and will discuss almost any topic about science.
His grading system is lenient. The labs are the same weight as the exams. You need 80% on Mastering for an A in HW. You can literally fail each exam (I got 55% average), as long as you do good on the labs (they are EASY!). Go to the chem tutor or ask him if you need help. Put in the hours and be diligent about your grade. You'll be fine.
Kidwell is a very knowledgeable professor. He understands chemistry and you can tell he is excited to teach it. This class takes a lot of work. If you want a good grade, I recommend reading the textbook on top of taking lecture notes. Study, do the homework, and the final will be easier than the exams. Honors has some extra work, but not difficult.
Kidwell is the best professor I have ever had. He is a lenient grader and has very detailed lectures. He seems intimidating at first but show you care about your grade and he is willing to work with you. The tests are hard but they work in your favor, so put in the work and even if you get a 50% average on the tests, keep studying and do the work.
Tests were pretty hard and averages were low but he makes up for it by curving the final exam. All in all a great professor. Would recommend.
One of the best chemistry professors he's passionate about what he teaches, not just that but he has a great sense of humor. his exams are difficult but even if you fail them you can still pass his class with a decent grade. mastering chem can be a pain but it helps, lab reports are simple and straightforward.
Professor Kidwell has so much passion in his job, his lectures are pretty heavy including all tests taken under Honorlock in person. His labs are pretty straightforward and does give you credit for trying on the labs even though it may not look right. Other than that I have nothing bad to say about him, do take him if you are taking CHM 121 or 122.
Favorite professor I've had so far, probably one of the most intelligent teachers I've had in my entire life. Lectures cover lots of content and exam averages are Cs and Ds, but do well on everything else and you're fine. Mastering Chem takes forever but it helps. Very laid back and accommodating, most labs get cut short.
If you want to actually learn chemistry, this class is great. His lectures are surprisingly interesting, and he clearly likes teaching. Beware of the group presentation and the two formal lab reports. The three "unit" tests get around a 70 % average. The final is curved against all non-honors students and replaces a unit test grade if beneficial.
Extremely intimidating at first, but not as scary as he seems. Generally willing to help you succeed in his class. DO NOT miss lectures and DO all of the homework, read the textbook, and turn in work on time. If you put effort into the class, you should do fine - but I would go with a different professor if you have no interest in chemistry.
Very passionate and knowledgeable about chem. Cares a lot about students' success. Always happy to answer questions if you don't understand something. Very accessible outside of class. Tests were absolutely BRUTAL though and he talks really fast during lectures. Does things to boost your grade at the end of the semester. Overall great professor.
Mr. kidwell is a brilliant man... really knows his chemistry well... seriously! There was a ton of work, I mean a ton, and I spent about 20 hrs a week just doing hw/labs. You will learn a lot in his class, and his exams are very difficult but they will prepare you for the final.
Professor Kidwell was overall an amazing professor, though he does go fairly fast in lecture, he's always accessible after class and during his office hours for any further clarification or questions. He provides homework through MasteringChem, and test averages ranged from 30-40%, but his class is built in a way, where you can still earn a A or B.
Professor Kidwell is a passionate chemistry expert who really engages students. Exams are challenging but the course is rewarding - just make sure to stay on top of the workload. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for preparing for tests.
Not sure why he's not at Harvard. Experienced, passionate, & highly knowledgeable chem professor. Articulates at high intellectual level. Fast-paced lectures. Class averages ~50% on tests (A's still possible). Overall, Andy Kidwell belongs to the group of professors at Harper that makes your educational highly enriching and growth-fostering.
Great professor! His grading was fair and gave excellent feedback. He graded assignments quickly. He cared very much about our success and taught the subject well. He did talk fast and gave us a lot of homework, but that helped make the final easy. Averages on exams are 50% but that still means you can get an A in his course.
He's just the GOAT. I HATED everything about the class itself, but Kidwell made everything worthwhile. He is such an obviously intelligent person, but never comes off as pretentious. His passion for chemistry was made abundantly clear every time he went off on some tangent about the chemistry we experience every day. You'll work hard, but its worth
Professor Kidwell is an amazing professor, at first he comes off as a serious professor but he is absolutely the opposite. This isn't an easy class but his lectures are very informative and he is easy to access after class. Mastering Chemistry homework is a big part of his class and his lab reports are easy. Pay attention and you'll pass with an A.
Great teacher, is very passionate YET his grading system makes no sense. He never uploads your grade on Blackboard and does not even tell you what you got on the final. Besides his clearly flawed grading system, he is a 5/5 teacher.
Homework is 4+ hours once or twice a week, lectures are fast, and he makes the tests harder than the other classes. I didn't learn anything in the lectures because it was too fast and had to learn from YouTube. Yes this class is hard but he made it more difficult resulting in me not understanding concepts.
This is a class where the amount of time you spend directly correlates to your final grade. I probably spent about 4 hours a day preparing for this class (in summer session). You don't need extensive background knowledge to be successful. Kidwell is passionate about chemistry and supportive of his students. I learned a lot and would take again!
