This guy is young and cool. His lectures are kinda boring and he likes to pace around the room. He takes attendence everyday. He's a very fair and easy grader. Overall, I liked him.
This is the best history teacher i've ever had! his lectures are fun, he shows clips from the simpsons and relates it to what you're learning. grades easy. 2 tests and 3 papers, but the tests are VERY easy if you take notes in class. overall, this class is awesome.
His lectures can be a little boring but the class and the material is super easy. He doesn't give a lot of work and is flexible if you communicate with him. And to top it off, he is gorgeous!
This professor has no conception of what upper-division students need; had us read two utterly-irrelevant books. Class was supposed to be about Historical methods and Writing - we didn't do a single writing exercise in class, no helpful criticism, a touch arrogant in his evaluation of student work, and generally useless for a history major.
At first the class seemed dull, and lectures do drag, but take good notes they're helpful on tests. He's very helpful too! don't be afraid to ask him for help. The class does get interesting too. Get into class discussions, they help your grade. 3 quizzes, 2 tests, and one paper...
Class was way boring. I you take good notes and share notes with other people you should be fine during the exams. If you do not participate in group discussions you will not get a good grade. This class just has a lot of note taking.
He is an okay teacher. Sometimes he is spot on with he lectures and other times he is really really boring. He assigns a large amount of reading. His grading is different from other teachers, so beware of the quizes and the test. Overall, he is a good teacher. Not my favorite, but hopefully I will do well in the class.
The subject matter is a tough one to teach, but Prof. Strathman knows how to keep history interesting. Although he is young he provides a wealth of information on all things history. The books he assigns are relevant and interesting, not just the average history text. He makes corny jokes to lighten the mood, which is always entertaining.
This teacher is awesome!! His jokes are corny but entertaining. you can tell he doesnt plan to joke and gets all embarressed after! His lectures are very useful and CLEAR. Everything he says is relevant! One thing is that he starts to get a little monotone, but not always. VERY interesting class, and I hate history! Be at class and participate and
I recommend this class. Dr. Strathman's lectures were very clear and you could tell he was really passionate about history. Take good notes and you'll do fine on his exams. Read the assigned books because he quizzes you on them. Also, always attend class because he takes attendance and counts it toward your grade.
California history is pretty boring, but he does what he can to make it interesting. Lots of books to read to help supplement the material. A few quizzes, midterm, 1 paper, and the final. Go to class and take good notes.
Doctor Strathman is one of the best young professors at CSUSM. It was my great pleasure to take his His 301 class. He is approachable, very chill - but firm. His instructions are very well laid out and help the average student learn a great deal about how to be a successful history student. And he's like 30 years old! Take him if you can.
I took his Ideas In America class. The class lectures were interesting but the reading material was challenging. You MUST come to class or you'll fall behind. I got an A out of his class and I learned a lot but I certainly worked for it! One paper and 3 or 4 online tests. Good class - very organized and good professor.
He's a really cool teacher. His lectures are boring though, but they are important because they relate to the quizzes and tests as well as the paper. Be sure to keep up with the assigned readings or you'll fall behind. Overall, it's a good class if you have an interest in history.
Excellent teacher who is polished on the particular areas of history I have had him for. Read the material, show up, take verbatim notes, study, and you will do well. He doesn't ask for anything crazy and he covers everything he expects from you on papers and tests. He has a great personality and if you pay attention, you will gain from his courses
This class was very easy. A few quizzes based on readings (10 questions each), 1 paper a midterm and final. Tries really hard to be funny, but is just kinda awkward but still funny. Lectures can be a bit boring, but overall is was a very simple class.
Great Professor. His classes are 100% lecture he gives out a lot of content. If you show up to class and pay attention maybe take some notes you will do very well in the class. He knows a lot and can answer any questions pretty col guy too. I have had two classes with him I would take another.
Nice Teacher. Clear and cares about students who take the class seriously. You must work for your grade. Definitely recommend.
Nice, helpful, funny, cool teacher! Pay attention in class to lectures to learn course material easier, they are long and boring but what history material isnt? At least he explains and knows his info and tries to joke. He did make me genuinely interested. 2 big papers based on novel readings, 2 big tests. Avg grader.Definitely recommend this teacher!
He was very helpful and lenient when it comes to assignments. His lectures were long, but clear and concise. He is somewhat funny and interesting. Overall, my experience in his class was that of a positive one and I learned a lot. Just make sure to take good notes and read the materials he assigns and the class should be fairly easy.
He know what he is teaching, he makes history fun and interested. You learn so much in this class but you do need to take a lot of notes. you use the book a lot so it is requirement to buy them. His jokes are so fun and on top of that he is very handsome
Very good teacher. Class is somewhat dull at times but the Prof genuinely enjoys talking about the subject and is obviously very knowledgable in it. The tests are relatively easy if you study but he is very difficult grader on any writing assignments.
This guy was awesome, corny jokes but really wants you to succeed.
He is a hard grader. I never worked so hard for a B in my life. That being said, it is clear that he is knowledgeable about history and he is clear about what he expects. The workload is definitely reasonable. Attending class is important because he gives a lot of information and it will be on the test. I would take him again.
Get a study group together within the first two weeks of this class, it will save you. The tests are easy if you study even if it's only a little bit. Find someone who had him the semester prior and get their old tests to study from.
Just a good course. He is EXTREMELY knowledgeable about US History and an overall good guy. Make sure you do the readings, because he will discuss it and participation is really important for your grade!
Hes a great lecturer, always prepared, and is a fair grader 2 essays, 2 midterms and a final. The tests are straight from lecture, some questions from the textbooks. If you thoroughly do the study guide, you'll do fine. I occasionally used my textbooks, mainly used my notes from his lectures to study. Attendance is not mandatory, but its best to go
He's an AMAZING professor. But very unclear as to what will be on the tests or papers requires. 3 papers, 2 midterms, and a final. He's VERY short on what he wants on the papers so ask him questions. He makes it a primary to learn the names of the students and interact. HARD GRADER. But work for it and you'll get what you deserve.
If you're looking for an easy A, go elsewhere. He is a really hard grader. I got 89s on every paper for missing one tiny detail that we talked about in lecture for like 2 minutes. Very nitpicky. However, as long as you remotely pay attention in lecture and take notes his tests aren't bad at all.
He is a great lecturer, always clear and straight to the point. Lectures get kind of boring but they are bearable. READ THE JOHNSON BOOK, participate in group discussions and take good notes and you will pass his tests. 3 papers but you only need to do 2, be clear and use your resources. Great professor will answer any questions with clear answers.
He's a really nice guy! His lectures can be a little long, but he keeps it to the point and throws in a couple of jokes. He doesn't assign too many papers or readings. Overall, he's a great professor! I want to be his friend.
He's a phenomenal professor. Knows his stuff. By far the hardest B I have ever worked for in my life though. Seriosuly. 3 papers - only 2 count. 3 exams (2 are the 2 midterms). That's it.. Also, he'd very very unclear about the prompts for the paper, and is a tough grader.
I went to every class, I took all of the notes, I did the study guides and STILL failed every test. The highest grade I received in that class was a C- and I had to read a 400 page book and write a 6 page paper on it and i STILL got a C- If you don't like history DO NOT TAKE STRATHMAN. he has no sympathy whatsoever and he never cancelled class
i enjoyed this class, he REALLY knows the material and was able to ask any question. Classroom participation is really a must or else it gets awkward when no one reads and he's asking us questions no one knows. He is a tough grader, i got a c but i did not put in much effort. The study guides REALLY help you prepare for the tests. he is also cute!
The professor is a very intelligent man and provides good information during the lecture. That being said, the study guides are unclear. He has you study a large amount of information with only a small portion being on the test and he grades papers like he's an English professor. He critiques every ounce of your work.
He is a nice guy but grades your papers as though you are in a writing course. His tests are semi difficult depending on how hard you study. He is not very clear on your grade and where you stand. Overall, I wouldn't really recommend this class unless you absolutely had to take it.
His class was impossible. Get ready to guess what his (unrealistic, unachievable) expectations are for everything. Notorious within the History Department as a hard grader. Get ready to read. Final included multiple choice and 2 on-demand essays. Suggestions: Participate as much as possible, memorize everything he says. Do not expect any help.
Being a freshman in an upper division class for the first time was pretty intimidating. This class wasn't as bad as it is purported to be. The professor is very knowledgable in his subject of teaching. Since he is so knowledgeable he grades pretty harsh with the assignments he gives. His lectures may be boring at times, don't skip class. READ.
He is so easy to follow. I didn't need the textbook to learn, because his lectures and power points covered everything. The more questions and comments you have, the better the grade he'll give you. He's very straightforward with grading. Take good notes, and you'll have no problem passing the test. Make sure you buy the book w the primary sources
I was one of 6 History majors in the class. Lots of reading and material to know. While I personally disliked how this class was harder than my Senior Seminar class, if you allow 3 weeks to study the lectures for the midterm & final you will pass. Go to his office hours. I asked about my grade 9 times & got feedback. I am taking him again for 336D.
He is a great lecturer, explains everything clearly and made the topics very interesting. He is very passionate about history and will help you if you come to office hours. Grading is moderately tough and is similar to an english professor.
i would get home and feel as if i had learned nothing. Lectures are boring and because i am not very interested in history it was hard to pay attention. You have to take all your own notes off lecture.. The study guides are very long and tests are very hard. essay questions on every test and essay (on top of essay questions) attached with the final
Do you love structure? If so, then you must take any class Professor Strathman instructs. The class is highly organized, so it is easy to predict and follow along. Strathman constantly references Conan O'brien, The Simpsons, and various sports team(Kings, Red Sox). He also includes John Muir in every class he teaches, an obsession with the Muir.
I've never liked history but this class was no good. Monotone lectures, no slides to go along with lecture so if you don't catch what he says good luck figuring it out then catching back up. Three papers (first two one paragraph each last one full essay) and essays on every test. Super strict grader. Crazy long study guides that don't help much.
He's a great professor but his lectures are really heavy. His class is mandatory but the lectures could be boring sometimes. You will have a midterm, final, 2 short papers, a four page essay and a few worksheets based on the readings.
Even after doing all the study guides and reading his midterm and final are tough and have no correlation to the study guide. Notes are also tough to take since there are no slides so you have to write down what hes saying as fast as you can. Voice record his lectures if you can and youll probably do okay.
As long as you keep up with the reading and take good notes, you'll be fine. Lots of lectures but the tests aren't hard.
He's super nice and understanding, he does LOTS of lectures but as long as you keep up with the readings and take notes you'll do fine!
Stratham is a good Professor, his lectures are heavy and very long and informative! Be ready to read, he quizzes you on what was given to read as homework! Final and midterm were tough but nothing to bad!
Strathman is a very funny and involved professor. He does his best to keep you entertained and focused. Study Guides for tests and plenty of time to complete essays. Don't procrastinate!
Dr. Strathman is a genuine professor. He is SUPER unbiased and very fair in his feedback. Extremely approachable and understanding. You WILL read a lot, and he will ask the class after the reading to contribute. Work hard in his class and youll get a good grade. Tell him youre a Liverpool football fan to get an A
He's OK. Boring long lectures and tons of reading outside of class. However minimal work which is almost always easy. Curriculum was very dry. Come to class and listen to him ramble each day and you will be fine.
Nice guy but a super hard grader and lectures can be boring
He's really hard but interesting enough for a history teacher. Super cool guy I thought I might not pass because I didn't get above a C on anything and terrible participation but I ended up with a C+. If you somewhat act like you're trying he will try and pass you.
Dr. Strathman is a great professor. His lectures can be long and boring but all the information he gives is relevant. He tries to make lecture fun by cracking jokes. He takes attendance which counts as participation. Just be in class take notes and you will earn a good grade.
Best teacher I've ever had. You learn so much from this man. He is super knowledgeable and is charismatic as all hell. He is a tough grader. He is super lecture heavy. But, his lectures are interesting and they keep you engaged. He is without a doubt the best historian at the school. He's not biased at all either. No idea what political party he is
Super nice and chill guy lectures a lot but likes a lot of class participation
The professor is calm and is very straight-forward in lectures. He makes sure that students see the significance of concepts, so don't just memorize concept after concept. As long as you show up and do all of the assigned readings and take notes, you'll do fine
Lots of reading and lots of writing. He assigns a couple of documents to read every week and you can't pass without reading them. He has timed in-class writing assignments and some of the prompts are questions directly from the documents. The mid term and final exam's essay questions are also based on the documents. Read them and you should be fine
This class consisted of a TON of readings from the textbook and documents and it was difficult to keep up. Good thing is that the textbook he uses is a free online resource. From my experience, he was unresponsive to emails even when it was time-sensitive information. He is also a difficult grader.
Dr. Strathman is a quality professor in the fact that he explains things really well and he gives great feedback on papers. But like what many have been saying he is a tough grader so you have to ask him questions and really put in the work. Once we switched to online mode he became much more flexible. Take him if you want to become a better writer
I enjoyed Professor Strathman's class. With the COVID fiasco he offered a hybrid online class consisting mostly of asynchronous work and usually one meeting a week to discuss our readings. I enjoyed the zoom discussions and I feel like he would be a great professor to take in person to attend lectures. We had two essays and one group project.
Professor Strathman is a tough grader, but he is very knowledgeable and a great professor. I recommend reaching out to him for help as soon as you start struggling because he will definitely try to help you. Do the reading and you'll be good.
perhaps the harshest grade I have ever had. Do not expect an easy A or maybe an A at all.
He is a great professor and has amazing in-depth discussions about the material. He has a passion for history and has a vast knowledge of all the topics at hand. This is a class that you must go to class for, as most of the information is taught during in-person discussions. I would take this class again!
honestly if youre a shy kid dont take this class. lots of group projects/ assignments. Not too hard though homework and essays are pretty easy
In class writing assignments once a week. This class is lecture heavy so you really can't miss class. Lots of reading.
Very nice guy. In-class writing assignments once a week based on readings he assigns to you prior. The in-class writing assignments are the main grade in this class and he does not tell you when they are so if you skip class there is a chance you miss it. If you keep up with readings and take notes in his lectures the class is passable.
Pros: Good lectures Down to earth person Understanding Extra chances for in-class writing exercises Cons: Lots of reading Get ready to write good college-level essays Two essays (1 worth 10%, 2nd worth 15%) Writing exercises are worth 40% of your grade (He drops like 5/13 of them though)
Weekly pop quizzes every week based on reading assignments. It's important you don't skip because you may miss a quiz, which is a good chunk of your grade. Keeps ten best scores. Two papers aren't too bad. Always willing to help, so don't be afraid to email him questions on readings or papers. Go to class!
Overall really enjoyed this class and professor. He will give a lot of feedback on your papers, he is a tough grader too. But the class is enjoyable to sit through and he makes the material interesting! Be prepared to come to class and participate.
Profesor Strathman is an amazing history teacher. Most of his tests are based on his lectures/reading discussions that are in class, so if you do not attend/do not take notes you will have a hard time. As long as you go to lectures and read the 2-4 documents a week that he assigns, then you will pass easily.
-lecture heavy, take as many notes as possible -does not record lectures so attendance matters -only homework is to read 1-3 documents before each class -3 midterms, 1 essay -12 in-class timed writing exercises analyzing documents, no makeups -funny and entertaining -appreciates participation, wants to hear your thoughts -very knowledgable
He is a really funny and cool professor! I enjoyed his lectures. I will say that you have to be constantly taking notes in class because most of the information you need is not on the slides but he pauses so that you can catch up when writing notes. Do not be afraid to ask questions!
very amazing
His a tough grader. His study guides for the 3 exams are vague so it's hard to tell what's really on the test. Attendance is mandatory. There isn't a lot of homework just 3 assignments,1 paper, 3 exams. It's possible to pass you just need to pay attention. all the exams are in person and need a green book.
Strathman is one of the best professors I've had! You can tell he cares about what he teaches and cares about his students. Classes are lecture heavy so taking notes is a must! There is a minimum of three required reading responses. Overall, the class is very well outlined and pretty enjoyable! Would definitely take one of his classes again!
Overall good, just lot of readings. textbook was online and free. almost weekly writing assignments so better to not miss + lectures posted online aren't detailed enough for exams. (take good notes)
Great professor, Loved his class and there is literally only like 3/4 assignments that you need to do and everyday is lecture followed up by a class discussion which he is very good at facilitating.
Very kind and great conversations during class. Participation isn't exactly required but you learn more if you do. Attendance will significant boost your grade
great professor, you can tell he's passionate about what he teaches. also gorgeous hair, I wish my hair was built like that. Tip: make sure you take notes during lectures, not just the PowerPoints.
Professor Strathman is a solid choice if you're looking for a solid history class. He's very knowledgeable in his fields of study and also very passionate about his work. He is probably the toughest grading professor I've ever taken, but he offers sound advice and he is very approachable if you need help. Expect to fight for every point on papers.
Great professor, can be very sassy at times with emails and in class. Readings were very easy, along with a writing assignment once a week (maybe two). Three exams and one paper. Don't expect everything to be on the PowerPoint because he covers all the information during class. Do show up to class every day for points. Overall knows what he's doing
Class was straightforward, professor lectures, you get small writing prompts about reading like once every 3 weeks, and you take 3 tests. I honestly didn't even study for a single one of the tests and still got a B in the class. If you just show up to lecture and listen you'll be perfectly fine. The professor himself is super chill and funny.
Dr. Strathman is a very good professor. Make sure to listen to his lectures and take lots of notes as his slides don't contain much of the info that he goes over. He gives lots of feedback on papers as well.
Prof. Strathman was willing to work with me during the hardship that I underwent near the end of the semester to make sure I finished off strong. He is a great communicator and a funny guy. His class is very enjoyable and he is honestly super chill. Yes, there is notes to take but they seriously help with the exams. 2-3 exams and one essay.
Dr. Strathman is a great professor. Make sure to take notes during his lectures, as there is minimal info on some of his slides. There is in class writing assignments that are about a document that was discussed in class. He does three tests throughout the semester but they aren't that hard. Only one paper to write the whole semester.
He's amazing and great at teaching course material. Readings are fairly easily and correlate to lectures. Overall phenomenal and very funny, he makes class enjoyable.
Professor Strathman's class is one of the best I've ever taken in terms of quality, material, and teaching style. Lectures were content heavy and you'll have to fill in a lot of your notes, but his class keeps your attention and he offers good feedback. Attendance is important because of in class writing exercises, and exams are essay-focused.
Professor Strathman is a very chill and friendly professor. Attendance does matter since there are in-class writings he'll do on random days, and he'll explain in lectures, as there aren't many on the PowerPoint. I used to dislike history, but Strathman made it interesting, and I liked what I learned during the semester.
