absolutely sucks drop immediately
Had her for calc 2 two years ago. She was very helpful but raced thru the material. You'd have to race thru it too if you were teaching. Also assumes you know the previous material (well, you should if you're taking calc 2).
What's with all the bad ratings? I thought she was great. Although she is tough. Maybe some can't hack it in college calc
Goes very fast, very hard to get in touch with for help, seems to get angry at the class when we ask questions
She is an awful teacher. She easily gets upset when you ask her questions. She uses examples that do not make sense and have no purpose to the material at hand. She makes the material harder than what it is.
She is a terrible professor. She puts useless examples on the board and gets very angry when her entire class does poorly. Her ability to relaty information to students is nonexistant. I found her class to be a complete waste of my time and money.
Avoid her if possible.
Drop this class! Believe me you don't want her, she makes all the material so hard and does not follow the book when the departmental final is based on the book!!!!!!!!!! I went to every class and she still didnt teach me.
Knowlegeable, amicable, and totally incapable of actually teaching. Unless you already know calculus (and then, why are you taking a course?) or are preternaturally disposed to solving math porblems you will do very poorly.
What are you people talking about?? Athanas was a great teacher. Her explanations were clear, and she gave great examples in class. Her exams were almost identical to her practice exams. If you did the practice tests, you could easily get an A
She is a very smart person, however this is a disadvantage. She expects you to know a lot,and you are almost intimadated to ask her questions.Lessons tend to trail off sometimes. However, worksheets, and practice tests are very useful.Forget about the book.
She assumes you know the basics down COLD. Only take her if you are serious about calculus.
Good Teacher and nice lady
She is an awful teacher. She gets easily upset when she helps you. Her examples don't make sense. Drop her immediately.
i found her hard to follow and pretty intimidating. exams were difficult and harshly graded, and the book was completely useless.

Angela was, by far, the most knowledgable teacher I have ever had in Math, whether in college, high school, middle or elementary. She knows how to teach, and she needs not look in a book. Although she goes too fast at times, she has made an impact on me
Angela is awesome. She realizes that Calc books are absolutely useless, and instead gives worksheets as homework, which help greatly on the exams. When people started cutting class, she started giving quizes as attendance, which I found hilarious.
She is awesome. Her tests are fair. People who say her tests are unfair DON'T GO TO CLASS!!! she is an excellent calc teacher and wants to help the students as much as she can.
She is an awful teacher. She does not want to help people (who do attend her class) when they ask for it. She gets easily frustrated. Take someone else.
energetic and enthusiastic. good teacher who wants everyone to do well...rather interestingly, she will not curve an exam if the class does bad, she'll just give another exam
I absolutely suck in her class, but she's not hard on me about it. She's more concerned with us actually learning than anything else.
I did not like her at all. Her examples are difficult to follow. She does not like people who do not understand the material. Don't take her if you don't understand calc.
She was awesome! Very intelligent, very helpful, and has very interesting lectures. Book was useless, dont even bother with the homework because it will only confuse you more.
Not the best prof to get, but will help you if you need it. Had a hard time with her examples, but all in all, not a bad class.
Shes ok
Very fair professor who knows what she is talking about. Recognizes the importance of main concepts and silliness of being hung up on details (i.e. minor calculation errors)
she was awful I hated her. She was so annoying and tried to sing anything. She would ramble and studder a lot and she was hard to follow. Her examples were not good. I will say that her tests were kind of easy, they resembled the practice tests a lot...but I definately struggled with the final
One of the best professors I've had, especially in calc. The extra worksheets and outlines she puts on the internet are helpful, and although sometimes she may not describe something perfectly, just ask and she'll spend a lot more time on it until it becomes clear.
She was by far the worst instructor I have ever had. I failed her class but just recently retook it this semester with another instructor and got an A. Do not take her unless you want to be incessantly confused and frustrated. Trust me.
unclear, unorganized (especially evident in her examples), impatient (went to her office hrs & was only made to feel ignorant), doesn't prepare you for dep'tmental final. the whole math dept is lacking actually...if you've got her, good luck, use the MAC alot
Incredibly frustrating, she doesn't prepare you for the final exam whatsoever but the others are very easy. Makes you wish you stopped at the previous math.
I Don't know what everyone else is talking about. She is one of the best math teacher I have ever had. Maybe those that struggles should try going to class.
she made the class comfortable, and as a freshman, I found her to make my transistion easier
She is enthusastic and friendly, a delight until you start the horribleness of calc2. I did poor in this class, but I probably would have done worse if I had a different teacher.
I have to let you folks in on a secret. It wasn't that hard for me to figure out. It's a little something called GO TO CLASS, PEOPLE!!!
One of the best math teachers I've ever had. Only complaint is that she doesn't follow the book very well so you can't miss class or else you'll get lost. All of the people who say she's horrible obviously are the same ones who don't show up for lecture.
best math teacher i've ever had. the examples she gives are pretty much crystal clear, and she really wants you to understand WHY you use a certain technique. very considerate of students' time; flexible about exam scheduling, etc. those of you who are struggling are clearly skipping a lot of class.
She is VERY good at explaining concepts and the reasons behind them. She makes excellent use of examples and is conscious of student lifestyles. If you attend class and do the suggested hw, you'll do fine.
Screw what other people say, she is a very good teacher. I took her because many students recommended me to her. She explains concepts very well and does not use the textbook at all. As long as you do homework and her practice tests, then u'll do good in her class. Also do not skip class or u'll pay
She was nice enough and the she explained everything in class pretty well, but she doesn't prepare you for the final at all, so don't be surprised if you don't get the grade you expected

She was awesome. I was glad to have her for the second time. I went on through Calc 4, so she gave me a good foundation.

Very knowledgeable. easy to talk to. makes examples and proofs extremely easy to understand, almost eplains it too much. every easy quizes/hw sheets every few weeks. tests are almost identical to practice tests. if you try at all youll get an A if you dont youll pull at least a C.
Awesome teacher. Very helpful and nice. I recommend taking her class. She makes calc fun.
She explained the material well, and always came to class with a peppy attitude. I recommend her for any Calculus course.

You don't want to mess with Athanas. In the beginning of the year she always wore sleeveless shirts, and this lady definately pumps some iron. She is a lively character, and really wants you to understand what you're doing, not just spit out formulas. Go to class, do the homework, and you will do well on the tests!
She explains everything very well. She is also always there to help you outside of class. If you go to class, do the hw, and do the practice tests, you'll do fine on her exams. The final is departmental though, so make sure you understand how to apply all of the skills b/c its totally different from her tests.
Shes Eh Eh. Ok !! kinda .. Good luck on the final..
one of the best calc professors there is at pitt, but obviously she doesnt need my help in rating ;) - from an alumna
Athanas was able to breathe some new life into a subject I'm not too fond of. She's nice and has a lot of energy. She obviously loves math and knows a lot about the subject. She makes a lot of resources available and she or her TAs are always available for extra help. Recommended.
Aparently she was amazing for calc 1, but that is all she can teach. Had her for calc 2-she was awful. Didn't prepare us at all for the final. Used the MAC a lot. Have her for calc 3-somehow she got worse. Use the MAC even more now. Class and the text have little to do with the homework and tests.
Athanas did not use any examples. Her homeworks were of limited use as there were only 5 the whole semester so if you have her you better make your own problems. She used only theory in class and was not very clear about it. She refers everything back to her previous classes, so if you have not been with her since Calc 1, happy failing.
Athanas taught Calc pretty well, and I was able to do well on most of her tests, quizzes, and homeworks. She's very easy to talk to and very helpful, and her classes are enjoyable. The departmental final, however, is complete sh*t. I studied extremely hard, and failed it, therefore failing the class. I had a B the rest of the semester. Fair? no
She was an excellent teacher. I would recommend her to anyone.
I had professor Athanas for Calc 3, which I don't think she plans to teach anymore. Her tests are pretty fair and I felt well prepared for the department final. She takes attendance in class occasionally, but doesn't really say how much it counts for. She gets angry about students not going to her class or not caring about it in general.
Good for calc 2, not so good for calc 3 but she's not teaching it anymore anyway. Easily accessible and really helpful.
She was such an amazing teacher. If you need to take a calculus course, she's the teacher to take. I heard her sections fill up fast! If you have any questions, she'll sit down with you until you understand, she really cares about the students in her class. She knows how to get the point across.
She was a HORRENDOUS professor. Rude, condescending, unprofessional, unapproachable. She did a horrible job of explaining things. She had her favorites and treated everyone else like****. She expected you to already be a math whiz. Her assignments were in "Athanian" as we dubbed her secret math language that no one knew. Unfair grader.
Although Prof. A is very energetic and loves what she is doing, she moves VERY quickly and assumes everyone in the class has prior knowledge of Calc and/or remembers what they did in 11th grade precalc and 9th grade trig. Thank the good lord for MAC. I hate asking questions because she seems condesending and I feel incredibly stupid when I do.
Although her teaching style does take a little to get used to, after a while you find that Professor Athanas is a good teacher. Her tests are fair, however, she is pretty bad with partial credit. Also, just as a word of advice, to do well you also have to do things/solve things her way, not yours. Other than that she is a decent teacher.
I would recommend her to anyone who has had previous experience with calculus. She uses good examples in class and is relatively clear, but using the examples in the book is a good idea. Her tests are fair, but the departmental final is not. She is always available for help, and I would advise anyone to take her class.
If you go to class, the tests she gives in class aren't too bad. You might have to do your own practice problems because she doesn't give much mandatory homework. She gives decent examples during lecture, where as my friends prof (Manica) used examples straight from the book. She's pretty straight forward and doesn't really try to trick you.
By far the second worst teacher i have ever had and the worst professor. She may know the material but her teaching style is flawed. she complains to those who show up that more people didn't come to class, and she even did an extra exam which wasn't in the schedule and a lot of people didn't know about it, didn't show and got a zero.
She is a nice teacher that gives very fair tests. She has online study sheets that were the only things that I studied. Along with the math practice tests. I ended up getting an A. Anyone that doesn't get an A in this class is either not trying hard enough or not dedicated to engineering.
Uses good examples.
Athanas is a great professor. Her top priority is making sure everyone knows the material by the end of the semester, and she is very committed to this task! Her tests are very fair.
Excellent at explaining difficult topics, I would encourage anyone to take her class if you want to have a clear understanding of the material. She is one of the best at teaching and not just reading the book to you. Any class that she is teaching is worthwhile to take.
By far the best math teacher I ever had and probably the best professor I ever had.
Probably one of the worst math professors I have ever had.
Probably the best math instructor I ever had. She teaches the topics clearly, goes over topics multiple times whenever it is needed. Homework questions are very relevant to exams. The classes are often hard, so I suggest that if you ever leave a class confused see her in office hours, in which she is very welcoming and helpful.
Overall, a mediocre instructor. Although the class is fairly easy and the material covered does not cause any significant trouble to most students, the professor's lectures really have little to do with your understanding/success in the class. She does try to involve the class during lectures, but her questions are extremely ambiguous and vague.
Definitely the best calculus teacher. She was very helpful and cared about her students and wanted them to do well.
very confusing, hard grader, not enough good solid examples
If you don't know the material well beforehand you likely won't be able to get by without reading the book. Knows what she's talking about, and often will skip steps on the board.
Her classes are helpful, the study guides are very similar to the tests. Often times the tests are more difficult than anything done in class. Important to do practice problems
She is a great teacher and her tests are really easy.
shez a funny person, i like her. i barely understood wuh she was sayin in class...therefore i did skip a lot of classes (another reason being i've learnt those before), but if u hv not learnt calc before, u better attend them all. Tests arent really hard, i didnt get good grades cuz i never check after finishing them XD...and yes, i highly recommen
she is very nice and fun, an awesome teacher- take her for algebra only!! she is great
Have a very solid foundation in algebra and triginometry, because knowing limits and identities is a great help for her Calc I class. Her tests are not easy, but they're not impossible either. She doesn't always give partial credit, so DEFINITELY check over your work for sign errors and stupid mistakes.
I had her for Calc 1. I hadnt had calc in high school and the class was almost impossible. I studied for hours. She does a lot of conceptual teaching rather than "this is how you do the problem". She has office hours but she's really intimidating. I went to the MAC A LOT. I dont know much about the other teachers but she was very hard!
One of the worst teachers I've ever had at my career at the University of Pittsburgh. I received a very low grade when I took her class, and then received an A+ when I retook the course with another professor simply because I couldn't understand her lecture. You might say that I am simply "just not good at math." This is not true.
She is a good teacher.I enjoyed taking her class. I could have made an A if I had studied well for the finals. You just have to work hard and make an A in the two midterm exams which in my opinion are not so difficult. If you make an A in them then, even if you make a C in your finals, you can't make less than a B in ur final grade.
I had Prof. Athanas for both calc 1 and 2, She is a very good calc 1 teacher. She is very good for the beginning of calc 2 however once you get into differential equations she starts to get confusing and in series she loses a lot of people. To succeed in calc 2 you are going to have to put in work outside of class.
She is a nice person. But her exams are terrible. I didnt like her teaching skills either but she is ok.If you want to pass calculus or get a good grade DO NOT TAKE it with her.
NOT GOOD!
really expanded my view of calculus even though i was a mathlete
Angela Athanas is slightly more difficult than other math teachers at Pitt. She teaches straight up from memory without any notes in front of her so she knows her stuff, but at times it was difficult to understand her teaching methods. Her tests are not that bad, it's a good idea to look at her previous tests they helped me a lot.
One of my best professors yet! She teaches with such clarity. Professor Athanas is incredible. Treat her with the respect that she deserves.
she really helps you understand everything!
Athanas is a wonderful teacher. She uses excellent examples to back up everything she teaches and she goes over everything again and again in class if you do not get it. She won't stop teaching the material until you learn it. Her exams are tough, but I pulled off a 100% and 92% on the first two exams with only 5 or so hours of studying.
I can easily say that athanas is not a good teacher. If you are in her class, suck up to her, cause it will help you. For her exams, learning concepts won't really do anything for you, just study her examples. She really does not teach the concepts of anything. Worst calc teacher I have ever had, take Inna or Hahn, you will not be let down.
Awesome professor, so helpful and makes you really understand the concepts instead of memorizing formulas. As a result, her tests need very little studying but a high amount of thinking. She's very fun in class and entertaining, and she made calculus enjoyable for everyone. Visit her in office hours and she'll love you.
she's sweet.
You may do alright in the class, but you will be DESTROYED by the final because the final has concepts that she BARELY touches on! She's unclear in her lectures and just overall incompetent. Just say no to this woman- take Hahn or Sysoeva.
Angela was one of the few professors that went the extra mile. She actually cared about the students and I think she did a great job. I would recommend her. Don't try to BS her or make excuses. If you don't understand a concept, ask her for help. Don't come on this site and flame her because you suck at life and calculus...
As head of the department, Athanas knows her stuff, and she really cares about students. I took calc1 in high school, so it was an easy review for me, but for others it was more challenging. she is really great in office hours. she also gives out a website with links to past tests, which are almost identical to her exams
Favorite teacher at PITT..(and I failed her class the first time)
Did not like her style of teaching. She wrote on the blackboard instead of using a overhead projector like the other math classes I have taken. She writes all over the blackboard- it distracting to follow the disorganization. She did not pass out any any lecture notes. She gears the class towards physics, engineering, and math majors.
You learn how to solve the problems, not just formulas and step by step methods. Much of her lectures are focused on why things are as they are and how we get to our answers. Go to class and pay attention.
If you always attend the class, you must get a high grade. She always cover all important points.
Athanas has been a very helpful teacher for both Calc 1 & 2. She is very good at providing detailed examples that correlate directly to her tests. The only mandatory homework is LonCapa. The weekly quizzes count for attendance and serve for great review for her tests. For the final I suggest asking around for other teacher's finals to be prepared.
Great examples (exactly the same as the LON CAPA). However, you'll need to do some extra prep for the departmental final. Her tests are fair and well written. very enthusiastic professor.
Angela cares that you do well, which is something that professors in higher levels of mathematic at Pitt don't seem to do. Tests are fair and her lectures are worth going to.
I absolutely adore Angela Athanas. She explains things very well in lectures, so don't even consider skipping. She's extremely helpful in office hours, and you can tell she cares a lot about her students. She actually brought me to tears on the day of the last lecture in May, after having her for 2 semesters. My favorite professor at PITT by far.
You'll get a good grade if you go to her office hours and suck up to her, but she's the one of the worst math professors I've had. Take Inna or Neal Hahn if you can, they are both much better professors and will actually teach you the material.
I LOVE Athanas, it's hard to explain her awesomeness in 350 characters. She's by far the best teacher at Pitt, and my favorite teacher ever. She knows everyone's names which is rare for college. She gets a bad rep for not curving, but her exams were very fair, and if you know the material and do the homework, you'll get a good grade.
best professor you could ever have for a math class. If you don't take her for calc 1 and 2, bad choice
Great teacher. Doesn't go over some of the stuff on the final in depth AT ALL. Go to office hours or pick up Hahn's( I believe that was his name) practice final. Very nice woman, wants to see you succeed. The class is only hard because of the final.
68 class average on first exam. ENOUGH SAID. If you want a good grade don't take her, unless you're brilliant. Let us retake 2 pages of the second exam since we did so awful on it. Then she made the problems we had to redo nearly impossible. She's ruining engineers college careers.
Angela is an extremely helpful and caring professor. I don't think her teaching style is the clearest, but alot of the problems that I had with the class were more due to how the math department at Pitt is set up. Still, Angela more than makes up for any shortcomings by giving back as much as you put in. Hard work definitely pays off with her.
Exam questions are extreamly difficult. You will not find anything compariable in the book. The final was 11 pages long, 12 including the cover. I studied for the final using the book, which was useless. I attended every lecture, and still failed the class. There was is a major disconnect with the bookwork, and questions asked on exams.
Great teacher! Tests were VERY reflective of loncapa, as loncapa is her baby. Very useful in office hours and wants to see students succeed. If you put in the work, you will surely succeed! Would DEF. recommend Athanas!
Attended every lecture and went to office hours and still failed the class.
Cares about students; makes herself accessible. If you practice using the book and with LON-CAPA, you will have little trouble passing the class.
AWESOME PROFESSOR! One of the best teachers I've ever had. Had her for Calc 1 and 2 and both classes were great. Tests are very straightforward and she is very helpful in office hours and during the lab. Highly recommend taking her class
She's definitely one of the better Calculus 1 teachers. She made the concepts easy to understand, and her tests were completely fair. She also prepares you very well for the final. Highly recommended for Calc 1 and Calc 2 as well.
Calc 2 was a breeze with athanas. Simply attend the recitation and do the Lon-Capa and this class honestly is a blow-off. Final was very reasonable, tests nothing totally out of the ordinary, very fair.
Great teacher. Her tests can be long though so when studying practice not only being able to do the problems but being able to do them quickly. Gives good examples in lecture. She doesn't try to trick you on tests so if you know the material you'll do well.
Best teacher I've had @ Pitt. Breathes the life into calculus & really connects it to its applications by explaining things well with examples; does NOT drag you down in overkill HW but rather assigns a few online problems that help you learn and help boost your grade. Her tests are fair, fun if you studied enough (which isn't an obscene amount).
Great Professor! She takes some getting used to and the 1st exam is a wake up call to a lot of students, but put in the work and you'll get a good grade! I failed the first exam, went to office hours and got tons of help, got a B on the second, and showed how hard I worked, and got an A on the final, and got a B+ overall! Great teacher!
Overall good teacher. Can be intimidating and tests are difficult but managable. Really helpful in office hours to clarify info. Sometimes in class gets off track explaining where the formulas come from but after that she gives good examples for how they are applied.
Athanas is a great professor. She is very concise when explaining concepts, and often over explains some of them. This can get annoying, but is very useful if you don't understand something. She is extremely helpful in office hours and really wants to see her students do well. Go to class, otherwise you will miss ALOT. I definitely recommend her.
I was very under-prepared from high school which is why i did poorly in this class. Angela is very helpful and really cares about her students. She is an excellent teacher and I highly recommend her.
Brilliant. Athanas is an awesome calc teacher. Very helpful, thorough, and dedicated. If you have the opportunity, take her!
Athanas is EXTREMELY clear, HELPFUL, and dedicated. She is passionate about her subject, which makes her a delightful teacher. I got a C+ on my first midterm, but got an A- overall because she tends to not count your first midterm grade if you get better grades later in the term. No written homework, Lon Capa is important, easy quizzes every week.
Amazing! I had her for Calc 1 and 2, and she was very clear and helpful both in lecture and in office hours. If you have the chance, take her for any course! She is very nice and wants every one of her students to succeed.
Dude she was awesome! I got a 56% and 70% on the midterms but got a 93% on the final and got a B+. She cares for her students and just do well on the final and you grade will reflect your final exam.
I'm a math major, and that's because of Athanas. She helped me gain a love of math and encouraged me to excel. Easy teacher if you go to lecture and office hours. TAs usually suck... LONCAPA doesn't help for tests, do practice problems in syllabus.
She can seem a bit intimidating, but she's a nice woman. Do the "strongly recommended" practice problems from the book. It'll help you a lot. Got an A in the class. Athanas is a good teacher, and I definitely recommend her.
Fantastic teacher. I had no interest in calculus, I still have no interest in calculus, but she made it a great class. Very clear teaching, very fair tests relevant to what she teaches. Goes at a nice pace and explains things well.
Professor Athanas is a great teacher. I have a learning disability so the quality of notes that she gives is very helpful. Also she has a website with advanced problems with solutions to practice former exams and finals from previous years. I highly recommend taking her, but be prepared to work and practice. It is not a say class.
Angela is an excellent professor. Her examples are clear and if you do the homework problems and practice exams you can do really well in the class. I had her for both calc 1 and 2 and highly highly recommend her. Take advantage of office hours. She really wants her students to succeed. TAKE HER!!
Prof Athanas is very enthusiastic about Calculus and about helping students do well. In her Calc 2 class, you will earn the grade you deserve based on how much effort you put into the class. If you do the book problems, go to her office hours for extra help, go in to the LON CAPA labs for homework, you should be fine for the exams and final.
LOVE her. One of my favorite professors at Pitt! Mostly because you can tell she actually enjoys what she is doing and teaching, which makes it so much nicer to pay attention. Very clear and helpful.
Enthusiastic professor, but do not take her class unless you've had calculus before. I went to the tutoring center at least once or twice a week for the whole term and met with the TAs regularly, but still did miserably on her exams. Retaking calc next semester with another professor...
I would highly recommend Athanas! She keeps her class interesting and teaches somewhat difficult examples rather than easy problems. By doing some of the suggested book problems and paying attention, her exams are extremely fair and what you would expect. I learned a lot and did well, so I would take her again in a heartbeat!
Athanas is a GREAT professor, my favorite so far. She explains all concepts very clearly, and her lectures are informative and fun. The assigned book problems are "recommended," but DO THEM IF YOU WANT TO BE PREPARED. Exams are extremely fair. Go to the LON CAPA labs and don't be afraid to ask questions. Happily taking Athanas for Calc 2 as well!
She was by far the most helpful professor I've ever had. As long as you show effort by going to office hours and do the practice, she will help you succeed. My only complaint is she teaches what she thinks is important, rather than what other professors put on the departmental final.
Had Athanas for Calc 1 and 2. Best teacher I've had at Pitt, especially for Calc 2! Exams are straightforward but she's a strict grader, so it's not an easy class. EXTREMELY helpful and nice in office hours and she has a great website with practice problems. She wants her students to do well and this makes a huge difference. I definitely recommend!
If you do the online homework and understand how to do it all, you should ace the tests. No surprises on her tests. Always willing to help you and cares about her students doing well. Go to class, if she knows your face and name you will do better in any of her classes.
super helpful in a really tough class
Mrs. Athanas is one of the most outstanding professors that I have ever had. She goes the extra mile in terms of helping her students and pushes you to achieve more than you ever thought possible. I highly recommend her.
Athanas was a great teacher. Her tests are very fair. Calc 2 was a hard course in general, but Athanas has a lot of energy and cares how well everyone does. Doing the practice problems helps. She teaches the class through examples rather than spelling out the steps, which is fine since you have recitation and the book as a supplement.
Athanas is my favorite professor thus far! She loves calculus and is genuinely concerned when students are not doing well. She wants to help each and every student, which can be a rare thing among professors. She does have a tough love attitude, but she's awesome! I definitely recommend her!
Athanas is an all around good calc professor. Tests aren't too hard and lectures are helpful. Occasionally she will go off on random tangents which can be confusing during lecture. Worst part is she uses Lon-CAPA but all calc one classes do.
Tends to be very scatterbrained and can confuse herself. Class notes tend to be unorganized. Provides with realistic practice tests online. Lon capa not too difficult (labs help). Chooses helpful TAs. Rumored to write the final which is long. Purely a lecturer. Enthusiastic and cares. Textbook probs for practice help with understanding.
Ms. Athanas, is by far, the best professor I have ever taken. Calc is hard for me, and she has a more untraditional way of explaining things. If you show that you are working, she will like you, and is so helpful during office hours. She is a tough love kind of teacher. Her exams are easy IF YOU STUDY; she will reward you if she knows you work hard
The tests are very tough but if you show up and do the optional book practice problems you will ace her class.
She spent much of the time talking about how our highschool was wrong. Explained things wrong and then when corrected by students in lecture she changed the topic instead of admitting error. Condescending to simple mistakes such as forgetting a negative sign while answering outloud. Terrible office hours, says you should know it and doesn't explain
Not a bad teacher, pretty enthusiastic and interesting. Although I usually understood what was taught in lecture, the test were often completely different. Doing book problems is VERY important, will help with tests.
She's awesome. Go to office hours. Best learning experience there is.
Athanas is hands down one of the best professors I've ever had. Does a great job of breaking down and explaining complex concepts. Difficult class. Tough grader but very enthusiastic & passionate teacher. Come to office hours prepared with thoughtful questions, show up to lab, do some textbook problems, pay attention in class and you're golden
calc 1 freshman engineer- i took bc calc got a four and ended with a C+ in her class. she was ridiculous and so confusing in lecture and she loves integrals. i went in to office hours and she always made me feel like i didnt know what i was doing if i made a simple mistake. shes a cool person, but more confusing than anything else. beware of final
She's a great person and great teacher but her tests are very difficult. She does not curve and does not give much partial credit. Only two tests, a final, and homework grade, so there isn't much room for error. The only test curved is the final. Great teacher, but if you are looking for a class that won't hurt you GPA, try a teacher that curves.
Terrible teacher.
Great lectures, gives very clear explanations of sometimes complicated concepts. Tries to make the material interesting. Honestly the only way someone could struggle in her class is if they never paid attention in lecture. Extremely fair exams!!
Dr. Athanas is a kind prof who wants you to succeed. That being said, calculus is difficult and her class is more difficult than most. Don't expect curving; expect to work hard and still be average.
She's a very good professor and really cares about the students, especially if you show her effort. Textbook problems are a huge help in the class. The tests are fair compared to the quizzes we do in recitation.
Angela Athanas is the most wonderful professor I've ever had. If she knows you are putting in effort, she is very approachable and helpful with your questions. Her class is NOT easy but she is one of those professors that emphasizes learning the information in the most efficient way. Textbook problems are essential to a good grade.
Calculus 1 is a difficult class, just like any of the other freshman engineering courses. However, Athanas, with her witty/hilarious way of teaching and enthusiasm for calculus, will make math awesome. Yes, awesome. If you truly pay attention, make use of office hours, and TRUST HER(aka do the work she assigns), then you'll see that she's the best.
I love her. I retook the class because I didn't do well enough on the AP exam, and she cleared up things that I hadn't understood in high school. She's there to make sure you do well, and she keeps the class pretty interesting.
She is really passionate about what she is teaching but she can get off track and confuse us. She is actually kind of crazy. The tests are harder than than the examples in lecture and the homework. I personally would not take the class again.
Athanas is bae. She is very approachable and wants kids to do well. If you pay attention in lectures you'll get an A. If you don't understand something ask her and she'll be more likely to give you partial credit on exams if she likes you. She explains everything slowly so material is easy to follow. Took her for two semesters of calc
Her lectures are very clear and makes the material easier to understand. Clearly cares about her students and welcomes questions.
I thought the course want that bad, you also might want to take her because she writes the departmental calc final, so if you have tests from her before the final it can help you do better on the final. Not sure how helpful she is, never went to her for help.
She very clearly cares for her students and is willing to have people in her office while doing homework if they need help. That being said, while she is a great teacher and person, if you've never taken calc before don't take her. For your own sake. She more or less assumes that you've taken it in high school which can make her class a struggle.
Really thought the course (Calc I) was taught in a very unclear way. I had the class in high school, and I am thankful I did because for someone who had not had calc before (multiple people) had no idea given the lack of lecture clarity. Went to office hours twice: one time she wasn't there and the other had absolutely zero interest in helping me.
I took Professor Athanas for Calc 1 and 2. Did really well in Calc 1, but had to retake Calc 2 because of how hard she makes the exams compared to the practice problems. I would have definitely taken another professor for Calc 2. If you go to office hours, you will probably get thrown aside unless you are one of her favorites.
She's an alright prof, but she does not, repeat DOES NOT give partial credit on exams. If you're weak in math, beware.
By far the absolute worst teacher I've had here. Her tests are insanely hard and she gives NO PARTIAL CREDIT. I had a whole page of work and she gave me a zero for it. I tried to go to office hours and she usually wasn't there and when she was she didn't help at all. Do not believe any of the reviews saying she is good, trust me she is terrible.
No, just no. She lectures on confusing proofs and poor explanations. The only reason I'm passing is because my TA and the hw. Her tests are unnecessarily long. The questions are rightfully difficult, but there are too many. Take another prof for calc 1.
do. not. take. athanas. very disorganized lectures. exams are rightfully difficult and I think she writes the exams for everyone but no partial credit is given. if you don't do a problem exactly the way she does it ( and i mean EXACTLY) she will be pissed. seriously save your self and take someone else.
Athanas is nice and loves Calc, but her lectures were often very boring and confusing. Her tests were mostly straightforward but had a few problems that you hadn't seen before. You also never knew when you had a quiz which I didn't like. Pretty sure she writes the final so that's a plus if you have her
Angela's class was very difficult for me, having never taken calculus before. I found her difficult to follow sometimes as she moved very quickly, but she is easy to catch outside of class and is helpful one on one. She does not take attendance but seriously go to class, I never skipped a class and still had a hard time.
If you have never taken calc do not take her. Lectures are boring and they are hard to follow. Your grade is dependent on the three exams which are sometimes straight forward but also include things that weren't gone over in class. She also gives no partial credit. You Must work very hard to pass this class.
Definitely would take Athanas again. Very helpful lectures and the exams are very straight forward if you have done all the practice problems. Definitely cares about her students and wants people to come to her office hours for help or just to do homework.
10/10 would recommend athanas. I took her for calc 1 and 2 and her lectures and office hours are very helpful. Her exams are straightforward and her practice exams are extremely helpful. If you go to class and pay attention, do majority of the necessary practice problems, you'll be A ok. Her exams are an accurate reflection of the final also.
I loved her. Even though her jingles can can feel weird, they work. She does her best to break material down into pieces you can understand. The tests are longer, but always types of questions you've seen before, and they prepare you well for the department final, which is crucial since your total grade can only exceed your final by a letter grade
Was thrown into her class after the original professor left and really wish I wasn't. She definitely knows her stuff but if you haven't taken calc before her 50 minutes rambles really won't do much for you. Tests were long but straightforward.
Athanas is the best Calc professor I've had at Pitt. She explains things really well, making even the most difficult parts of Calc 2 extremely simple. She has a website with tons of practice exams and practice problems. She is also very willing to help you outside of class. Her exams are extremely similar to the departmental final as well.
Athanas is pretty straightforward about what she expects you to know. Her exams are long, but as long as you review the recitation worksheets and in class problems you should be golden. She emphasizes concepts in class but the exams are based off worksheets/practice exams. Watch out for grading, even one bad exam can pull you down a letter grade.
I took Prof Athanas because everyone raved about how great she was, and she writes a good portion of the final exam. I took Calc BC in high school, so I had exposure to the material but had I not I would've failed this class. Her lectures were so unclear that I stopped attending and taught myself. Would not recommend to a beginner at calc.
Horrible literally nothing to say but absolutely horrible
Her lectures almost always end up her talking about something that isn't needed. She is very unclear while she describes the calculus. A strong negative is that she over explains a lot which leads to confusion. Me and a lot of my classmates found we learn more during recitation than the actual lectures themselves.
Her lectures are entirely theory, which makes them interesting, however her tests have nothing to do with theory. The homework isn't required, but highly recommended as they resemble the tests. The homework is very lengthy, many problems in the book. Exams are very hard, and I have taken AP Calc before. Very long problems that weren't in class.
She is incredibly intelligent and is amazing at calculus, but her organization for teaching it to a class is poor. Her lectures are all conceptual theory and are absolutely nothing like the exams, which is what most of the grade is based off of. You will need to teach yourself, as asking her questions outside of class has not helped whatsoever.
Don't take her class if you haven't taken calc before. She expects students to already have knowledge of the subject, her lectures are conceptual and don't help when it comes to the test. You are pretty much expected to teach yourself. Tries to make up practice problems on the spot, which results in 20min of wasted time in trying to fix her mistake
Athanas is possibly one of the most arrogant, difficult teachers I've ever had. Her lectures are nearly useless, and her handwriting is smaller than my desire to attend her lecture. She's smart, but more than willing to degrade you if you aren't. If you haven't taken calc before, you're as good as dead.
If you have never taken calc before or struggle with it, do NOT take her. She expects you to know everything and just covers theory stuff that doesnt help with the exams. If you go to her for help outside of class she acts like you're stupid for not knowing a topic already. She can also be quite mean lol
Yeah, her class is really difficult, but it's college lol. Even if you've taken Calc before, you definitely have to do the practice sets, use the book, and go to lecture. Lecture is mostly theory, which can be confusing, but if you pay attention, is very helpful. She really takes it to the next level even if you've had Calc before.
One of the most condescending professors i've ever had. She encourages students to ask questions in lecture, but when they do, she treats them with little to no respect and rarely gives an answer. However, her office hours are very useful and she is a MUCH more effective teacher when dealing with her in small groups. Overall I would not recommend
Not only is her class difficult as her teaching style is not very effective, she is so disrespectful and blames the students for their failures. After our second test she literally said "I can not believe you would come to a test so unprepared". Maybe if we could actually gain something from lectures, and the TA's spoke English, id be prepared
the only thing factored into your grade are the 2 exams and the final so there really isn't much room for a low grade if you want to excel in the class. she expects you to already to have a strong background in calculus, so if you don't then this class can prove to be quite a difficulty. if familiar with calculus 1, go for athanas!!!!
Here's the thing, for this class she only had 4 grades in the entire system. In the math department you can only get one grade higher than you got on the final. She is helpful if you go see her in her office hours, but she might call you stupid and yell at you, but does care. If you've never taken calc before you're going to be lost.
Angela gives pretty cool lectures if you like math. However, passing her tests depends less on her conceptual lectures/textbook problems and more on learning the test question style. The best option for studying is her worksheets but she refuses to put answer keys online. She loves teaching math but I dunno if she likes students.
Professor Athanas is really the best math prof i've ever had. Her lectures are really concise and her teaching pace is good. Coming from a person who hated maths for most of her life, I found the subject interesting again. This is not to say that her course is easy, you have to work for it. But if you have the chance to take her class - go for it!
I would say Angela is a good professor if you've previously taken calculus. If not, her lectures can be a bit confusing and unorganized. She's really passionate about not only teaching the material but making sure students understand the concepts behind it. Office hours are nice if you're struggling. Tests cover a lot of material but are fair.
she was really flexible with weighting my exams so she gave me a really generous grade. she explains the material well but you might still struggle a bit without previous calc experience because she moves quickly. her exams are definitely fair but you must practice with the book problems or they will be hard. calc is hard but she makes it bearable
I left that entire semester knowing less about calc than I started. I took calc in high school and even that couldn't help me. I didn't miss a single lecture or recitation and still didn't get anything out of the class. One of the worst classroom experiences I've had :(
Taking Angela Athanas class was the worst choice ive made at Pitt. Shes rude and doesnt stop to clarify anything. Her lectures are incredibly vague and basically consist of her standing at the board discussing things that barely pertain to calculus and expect her students to be able to solve extravagant problems. Dont take if you value gpa
Pretty good overall professor in my opinion. Make sure you do the practice book problems after each lecture. Also USE HER WEBSITE AS A REFERENCE to help prepare for exams. Did not have quizzes in recitation each week, but had ungraded worksheets instead which really helped me out.
It would have been pretty challenging if I didnt take AP but if you go to her office hours and do book work youll be fine, she's so nice. I basically didnt study for exams, I bombed the quizzes and still got an A. She puts basic examples on the exams and typically writes the final that all calc classes take so she knows what to prep you for.
She has a fun, quirky way of teaching which is overall enjoyable. Like most profs she demands we do practice problems outside of class and she knows her stuff well. HOWEVER, unless you're already getting high 90 on her exams, she will not be of any help within office hours... she made me feel stupid and said I needed to do more. I failed with C-
She does a ton of examples in class that really help. She writes a lot of the final so she knows what you have to study and prepares you well. Good recitation worksheets as well. Okay that's all. Very nice.
Can be a bit abrasive but no one is better at teaching calculus, especially calculus 1. She's been doing it for a long time and is very good at it. Holds tons of office hours. Do the practice problems from the book, they're not mandatory but you won't pass without doing them. I wouldn't bother with any other professor for Calc 1 & 2.
Unlike a lot of the Calc Professors she is a true teacher and I would take her again if she had classes above calc2. if you come to class, pay attention, and ask questions if something isnt clear youll do just fine.
horrible, rude, not helpful in any way
not a fan of angela at all. I took calculus last year in high school and already knew the information but was confused in class every day because she explains things in a very confusing way. she thinks our entire class is full of idiots. she does make herself available but I'm too scared to get hlep because she's very aggressive. 2/10 recommend.
Good luck if you've never taken calc! Even if you have, you will probably have to do the practice problems which was most of my downfall. I must have really picked it up for the final though bc I got Cs on both midterms. She is a bit aggressive sometimes, but is very passionate about math.
I took calc in high school, and still struggled a lot this semester. She is a good lecturer and definitely knows her math, but still makes it extremely difficult to fully understand. Tests are very rough and lengthy. You're grade depends on the 3 tests and online problems which sucks because the tests are impossible. Studying is 100% needed
Angela has a very abrasive personality that takes a while to get used to. Her lectures can be extraordinarily confusing because she just starts doing problems without explaining anything. Sometimes I found it was easier to learn topics from the textbook than trying to follow her lectures. However, if you put in the work, you can get a good grade.
Professor Athanas is a very intelligent lady but her lectures are very confusing, messy, and seemed unplanned. There were only TWO tests that were extremely long and tough to finish on time. Homework assignments are lengthy and online. She also assumes that all her students know what she's writing on the board instead of thoroughly explaining.
She has a personality that comes off as abrasive, but cares in office hours. To pass use her website and practice from it a lot She preps well for the final as she writes most of it. Lectures are confusing and long. You have to fill in the gaps on your own. Its a tough class. Do NOT take if you never had calc before. Requires hard work but doable.
She seems a little out there, but she is a wonderful teacher. I've heard Calc 2 is one of the most failed math classes at Pitt, and she will certainly give you the resources to succeed. If you want to do well in the class, do the optional textbook homework.
A solid choice of professor. Shes tough and makes you work for your grade, but ultimately it pays off on the departmental final since she writes most of it. Extremely helpful and caring during office hours, and keeps class interesting.
Athanas is a great lecturer if you read the textbook ahead of time. Her lectures are very example-heavy (not theory or formula heavy), but the examples only make sense if you have already skimmed the material in the book. She expects a lot from her students, but she also makes herself available outside of class if you fall behind.
Very enthusiast and passionate about what she teaches and wants nothing more than to see her students succeed. Took her for calc 1 and calc 2 and her tests are very similar to the final so her students are very prepared
Athanas is a solid professor. She comes off as a bit aggressive at first, but once you get used to her, she is very nice. Her lectures are good, and help you understand the material. MAKE SURE you do the practice problems in the book if you want to succeed. Her tests are reasonable, and if you practice, you will be fine. Overall, would recommend.
She is one of the best educators I have ever had. She only wants the best for her students and is always willing to help. Definitely recommend her for any math class.
She's a great professor. It's calc so you gotta do a lot of work but she makes it easier. Go to her office hours! She's always there and always helps! She's there for a reason! Highly recommend her.
Worst teacher i've ever had by FAR. She is a good person and is always available, but why does it matter if her exams are much harder than what she teaches in class. The homework and the reviews don' help when taking the exam. There are only two exams, and they are too long and hard to finish on time. Keep in mind that I took calc BC and got a 4.
While her class and exams are quite hard, they make the final seem simple. I actually felt relieved seeing the types of problems on the final, as they were fairly easy compared to past exam problems. Shes a bit abrasive at times but cares and will definitely help you out quite a bit. If you put in the effort, you can make it through calc with her
While her lectures were engaging and relatively clear, the tests were brutal. We never learned a few of the concepts on her tests. For example, we learned optimization, but we never learned how to find the dimensions of an object inscribed inside another object and it was on the second exam. The final was easier than expected.
Went to her for help on homework and was not very helpful and ended up getting the answer wrong herself. She put me down and said I was doing it incorrectly when I did the problem the same way she was. Definitely need a tutor if taking her class because lectures are very confusing. No practice worksheets are given or directions for studying.
First off calc at pitt is really difficult. She does her best to help. She has very open office hours, and will also find time to be available. I think she suffers from the curse of knowledge and forgets what it was like to learn calc. She grades harshly! I messed up on some simplification to a problem and got a 2/10. but was willing to hear me out
Angela is a solid choice for Calc 1 and extremely prepares you for the final. This class would have been easy if it were curved, but it isnt. So keep in mind your grade is your grade, doesnt matter what the average is. Theres weekly homework and if you dont come to class she wont help you outside. So go to class and youll be fine.
Professor Athanas gives very good lectures, but if you don't have much experience with calculus, it can be very difficult. I am not a math person and was not prepared for the demand of this class, but if you put in the work and get help when you need it, you will be fine. Exams are challenging and make up most of your grade.
I dropped calc 2 halfway through the semester. It was not Dr Athanas' fault. She is an excellent calculus professor, but you need to WORK outside of class to succeed. Calc 2 is extremely hard and has an extremely high failure rate. Athanas can seem grumpy in class but she is unbelievably nice and helpful in her office. Get help and you will pass.
this prof made me hate calculus. comes off very rude and abrasive and unless you show that you care, she will stay that way. very unorganized in lecture and simply does examples expecting you to know what she is doing and they are 10x easier than the practice problems and exams. DOES NOT CURVE EXAMS. your grade is solely based on exams & lon capa.
You will not do well in this class unless use her website and the loncapa every day for at least two hours. Her tests require an in depth understanding of all the material so definitely do more work than what's assigned, go to all of the lectures, take good notes, and put in lots of work.
She is extremely rude. When I asked to take the exam earlier for personal reasons, she instantly cut me off. She is unforgiving. I learned calc before and I still struggled with her class. She only curved the test once. Her tests are difficult even if you do study. Be prepared to put in a lot of work. Had a bad experience.
I'd describe Athana's lectures as watching a Tarantino movie. Information is all over the place and you don't really understand the overall connection of it, but somehow at the end you sort of get it. She is a bit out there and in my opinion and makes her lectures over complicated, but you won't fall asleep in her class that's for sure.
Dr. Athanas is very caring of her students, and if you go to her office hours she helps a ton! She wants to know her students are working and if she feels they arn't she will say it. calc labs are mandatory for her which is a little annoying. Also she does not curve or grade replace like many other calculus teachers do... But she is an great choice
She is an awful Professor. She made calc more confusing than if I had just looked at my notes from high school. She does not curve even when everyone failed her exam. She only puts a few grades in, and she makes her exams difficult. She is not very good at explaining material. I would not take her again in a heartbeat.
While I am sure of her ability to teach properly in an in person environment, her lack of professionalism and blatant disregard for students concerns when it came to course content was not something I would expect from a college professor. She routinely made tests longer than the rest of the math department and failed to prepare her students.
Do not take her class. Her tests are insanely hard and long, and you will not finish. She spends lots of time during lectures explaining the concepts, and not actually doing the problems. The main issue here, again, is the tests. If you have another option for a professor, take it.
There are not enough characters for me to describe how unprofessional and ill equipped she was as a professor. While in the rest of my classes during a pandemic I had no issues receiving help or seeing clear lecture notes or a clear purpose she decided to spend most of her class time berating the students and accusing us of cheating.
Athanas spends the entire lecture trying to explain the theory behind calc concepts w/o doing enough examples to properly prepare you for tests. Made the tests way too long and hard for most students to finish and just scolds you for doing poorly and says you need to try harder. Steer clear if you want a good experience in calc because she's drawn.
Great Prof, but she focuses a lot on the theory behind concepts & less on actual examples, especially in the beginning. You WON'T do well if you don't do the "optional" problems in the textbook and go to office hours. If you're actually interested in math, you'll love her. If you're taking her class to check a box, do yourself a favor and don't.
If you have the choice, donot take Athanas. She is absolutely atrocious. She doesn't give a damn about her students. Every other lecture is just her yelling at her students telling them how bad they are and how if you don't do things her way she will take off points. Overall, if you have any self respect, don't take her!!!
She's rude to students, yells at you. Told us we were wasting our time even trying basically. Her exams are so long it's impossible to finish let alone check your work and the grading is just as harsh. She has an exam policy where your final grade can't exceed your final exam score so if you get an F, you're basically screwed. Dont take, shes awful
Despite other opinions, Dr. Athanas is an amazing professor. While in class she may be a little intimidating, she is extremely helpful and approachable during office hours. Her teaching style may be different than what youre used to, but she is very knowledgeable about calculus and knows what shes doing. Practice is key!! Curves when necessary
Professor Athanas is the most confusing Calculus teacher you could ever take. Her tests are hard and a huge time-crunch. I took AP Calculus AB my senior year of high school, as well as getting a 3 on the AP exam, and still failed this class somehow, even after doing all my homework.
Athanas was okay, she's a tough teacher and can give a lot of critiques at the beginning of class. Definitely wants her students to succeed. The class was harder than anticipated especially considering I took AP Calc AB in high school and got a 3 on the AP exam, but as long as you work at it and do homework you should pass.
She is very test heavy and would give no feedback on the tests. She also made me feel stupid for asking questions. She expected that you had already taken AP calc and done well. She explained concepts well, but was simply not nice.
Athanas' begins ever class chastising the class, can be very rude, and gives tests that are impossibly long and then scolds you for not being able to finish. In the online context, she often sets up the submission wrong and screams at the class telling them to just "figure it out". Her teaching style is redundant and impractical.
Angela was a ridiculously difficult professor. Her exams were so long and tedious that it was very unlikely you'd even finish. She once yelled at my class for doing poorly on an exam, and would explain some topics very sparsely with few examples. I highly discourage taking Calc 1 with her.
While Dr. Athanas can be a tad bit wacky at times she is a solid professor. Emphasis on concepts, but that's not necessarily a bad thing and helps to establish a solid base of calculus. Much better than my high school teacher who gave 2 examples then sat down. Expects a lot from her students, but will curve if need be. Online exams stressed her out
Beware of her high rating! already took AP Calc AB in hs & the way she taught was so confusing we were unlearning information, to the point I stopped going to class. there's weekly HW, some REC quizzes, 2 midterms & a final (all the exams were a major time crunch) and no extra credit I can recall. took her in Fall 2020, maybe she's better in person
Please dont take her. Theres better alternatives
The worst academic experience of my life. Contemplating dropping out of college because of this class, thankfully I didn't because the following semester I took Calc 1 again with a different prof and got a 97... How do you go from a 55 to a 97. I hate this woman and she undouble took years off of my life due to stress and anxiety.
Pretty abrasive person and mediocre at teaching. I personally don't recommend her. I retook the class with a different professor and got an A.
Dr. Athanas was the worst professor I have ever had. Never have I been in a class where I have been disrespected and ridiculed constantly for not performing up to her expectations on tests. Her tests are impossibly long. I found myself flat out skipping lectures to teach myself the material, and I believe this move saved my grade for the class
To be honest, calc 2 with her wasnt as bad as it sounds on this site or as bad as my friends told me. Her teaching style is a little different, as she teaches a lot of concepts and explanations in contrast to doing practice problems all the time, and I liked her style. You might wanna use outside resources to reinforce material but shes solid!
Yes, Athanas is intimidating, but only because she is so passionate about the course material. It's a demanding class no matter the professor and you need to be willing to put in the work to earn a good grade in the class. She is extremely knowledgable and very approachable and helpful in office hours. Definitely do lots of practice!
I took calc 1 with prof athanas in the fall and it was an online class which I understand is going to be difficult but I was not expecting it to be impossible. I took calc 1 in high school and got an A so I can't imagine taking this class for the first time. exams are everything and she doesn't teach at all. she is a last option. trust me!!
Terrible teacher. Confusing lectures that ended up on tangents that made no sense. Gave her classes less time on departmental exams than the rest of the school, then got mad and yelled at us when the whole class missed the same problems. Like actually yelled at us through zoom. I literally took calc 1 and 2 before and almost failed calc 1 with her
Athanas seemed so sweet the first week of classes. Then she went off the deep end. Shes very sweet in office hours, but can be a bit cruel when she really gets into her lectures. I was one of the most engaging students in class and she called me an idiot for asking a question when I needed clarification.
I don't recommend, as someone who has taken calc before and I stilled failed this class. Her class doesn't have enough structure. She gives a few homework problems every week with bad lectures and expects you to be able to solve a problem in seconds by just looking at it. Even if the whole class is failing, she will blame the class and not self
If you can avoid taking Athanas, please do. She is probably the most miserable woman I have met. She is incredibly disrespectful towards her students, and would berate us when the class average was a 55% on the exam. I know people who stopped going to class, and just read the textbook because she was so useless. Doesn't respond to emails.
A terrible professor does not teach at all. She expects you to live and breathe calculus when it is impossible while taking other classes. Gets confused when she tries to teach in class then expects the students to know. If you have not taken Calc 1 before college it is impossible to pass and you have to learn it yourself. Worst professor I've had.
Athanas was a really good professor for calc. Exams are exactly the type of problems you work through in class and there are no surprises on them. However your grade mainly depends on the exams so if you fail one you're basically done for the semester. A really good professor who has clear expectations. Taking her again for calc 2 this semester.
Athanas is the worst experience I've ever had with calc. Her grading is terrible, as she never entered grades into canvas until after the semester, so it was a great surprise when I saw D in the gradebook. Very unresponsive to emails, and lectures are so unorganized and unprofessional, as she just tries to think of examples. AVOID.
Run, shes aggressive, rambles half the lectures and expects you to memorize an insane amount of stuff. She doesnt curve even when more than half the class fails. She is not helpful in her OH and will put you on the spot. On top of that most kids in this class are rude and will laugh at you if you ask a simple question. I dont know why I wasted my t
The worst teacher I've ever had. Its so hard to follow her teaching in class and the tests she make are so hard to finish in the amount of time she gives. She expects everyone in the class to be a math genius and fails you if you are not. PLEASE AVOID HER.
Uses a lot of incredibly bizarre metaphors that funnily enough, help me to remember and understand the materials better. Always available to answer questions, and gives thorough and thoughtful explanations. Exams are very difficult, but I found they were a very good indicator of what would be on the departmental final exam.
Avoid. She is so rude to her students and belittles them. I was forced to withdrawal due to the literal fear of going to her class.
Don't take professor Athanas. I have always been super strong in math- the way she taught left me so confused. Her lectures are all over the place and it's hard to follow along. When her students ask questions, she gets defensive and expected us to know exactly what we were doing. Calc is a hard course in general, but she made it impossible.
I went to 3 lectures then dropped. Athanas is an abrasive person & her lectures are all over the place. I had no idea what we were supposed to be learning. I asked her for a quiz schedule & she told me it would stress me out so she wouldnt give me one. I've taken Calc1 twice & got an A both times (long story), but her class was a literal nightmare.
Please do not take Athanas, especially if you haven't taken any calculus before. Her exams are extremely long and more difficult than the other Calculus 1 sections. Athanas also does not curve her two exams and blames her students for not studying enough instead of making the exams more manageable.
Is very hard to follow during lecture, and goes on long tangents that don't make sense. Gives hard exams that she does a bad job of preparing you for, although they do prepare you for the final in terms of difficulty. Only reason I passed the class was by learning the material off of youtube. Doesn't update canvas until after the semester is over.
She will not curve, and if she does it is very small. She let most of her class fail and she thinks she's helping them in the long run. Her tests are extremely long and detailed. The only way to pass is if you have taken calc 1 in the past and know what you're doing. If you haven't, stay far away. She's a nice person, but you're all on your own.
Pretty much 90% of your grad is based on how you do on the final exam. everything else is seemingly irrelevant and in the end, she gives you the grade she thinks you deserve.
Just avoid at all costs.
Attendance over the semester has drastically dwindled. I was confused, but I have recently been informed by my dear friend HC who is an engineer that all of my fellow lecturees have started attending other claclus classes because they cannot learn from Dr. Angela. I am 1 of 15 attendees. She also talks very loud and scary. I do have 101%, though.
Dr. Athanas is the worst academic instructor I have ever had the misfortune of taking in my life. She is rude, blunt, and callous. She is not transparent about grades either. If you can't look at a calc question and immediately know how to solve it, good look passing or even FINISHING her exams. If you take her, I feel bad for you and your GPA.
She totally doesn't know how teach material to anyone but clones of herself because those are the only people who would understand her absurd methods of teaching.
Honestly not a bad professor. Obviously calc is a hard class but she explains topics well during lecture and everything made sense for the most part. If you want a good grade you will have to study A LOT outside of class. Only downside is that 90% of your grade is based on exams. So if you do terrible on one exam, your grade will suffer.
Tough grader, and heavy lectures. She doesn't refer to the textbook a lot and her lectures can be confusing so it's hard to find exactly what lesson you're on. Jumps around topics a lot. Does not curve grades!!! she did not curve even though her midterm averages were VERY low.
Calc 2 is gonna be hard no matter who you take it with. Athanas is a great lecturer. I didn't realize until the end of the course that we didn't have any slides. Athanas simply teaches material by example. Athanas really wants her students to succeed - it's apparent from all of the office hours she holds. LON-CAPPA is a bit of a nightmare.
Grade is comprised of only 3 exams, with 7-12 questions one each. She is a proud professor, who does not mind if the entire class fails. Calc 2 is hard she makes it way harder. Other professors in the same class offer test corrections and curves, while she does not. Her lectures are impossible to understand forcing students to sit in other classes.
Your grade is completely decided by exams. There are 2 midterms that are 25% of your grade each (50% total) and a final that is 30%, so 80% exams and 20% quizzes and hw. Good luck reaching her as she does not respond to emails in a timely matter and tends to be rude in replies. Spends lecture drawing on board. Take this class at a CC instead
Angela isn't necessarily a bad person, but her teaching style wasn't for me. She graded off very few things (3 exams) and never any extra credit. She allowed a full class exam retake when the class average was failing. She also does not curve any exams. If you understand math, you'll be fine. Not great for those who need extra guidance.
Although she is hard for those who haven't taken Calculus before, Angela has probably been my most entertaining professor this year. Her exams are tough, but if you study, it will pay off. She is engaging and a little quirky but has been willing to help and connects a lot of the material really well compared to my past Calculus teacher.
Worst professor ever. Do not take!!! I took calculus before in high school and did pretty well. When I had to take her class though nothing made sense. She teaches some of the material wrong and won't admit it. She blames the class for the very low test grades when it is her fault. No extra credit and no retakes. Take any other teacher but her.
AVOID!!! I learn nothing during lectures as she comes to class unprepared & come up with examples on the spot while messing it up. We were always days behind other calculus 1 classes, and she rarely goes over solving actual exam-style questions. Our midterm averages were always in the 50s (just like past years). Get ready to retake your midterms.
Whoever tells you Athanas isn't that bad is lying. She focuses more on theory rather teaching you the information you need to complete the problems. She's very passive aggressive and blames the class for failing. She offers no curve so be prepared to study hard asf and still fail. Made my semester a living hell.
Do not recommend!! I came to Pitt was a very strong calc background and just found her class to be dreadful. Lectures are disorganized, boring, and not helpful in teaching calculus. Her grading is pretty much only based on two midterms(25% each) and a final(30%) with no partial credit on exam questions. She is rude and give attitude to students.
Angela's class was the most difficult class I have ever taken. However, coming from a failing student Angela was also the most caring professor I had. If you are struggling you must go to office hours otherwise you're screwed. If you show her that you care, and want to pass her class, she makes herself available.
Well, she's a nice teacher and she actually gives nice explanations on every concept. If you do want to learn something, take her. But her tests are notoriously difficult, seriously. I got an A because I'm lucky enough and take lots of extra time to prepare for tests.
I found her class to be a bit disorganized and kind of all over the place. She does not have structure to her lectures and introduces new topics randomly. Her exams are nearly impossible to pass due to lack of time and questions being worth an unreasonable amount points. Nearly all of the class failed the semester.
Loveeeee her. Literal bestie. Great teacher and cares about people truly understanding material. Go to class tho
She is the worst professor/teacher I have ever had in my life. The lectures are extremely disorganized and she does not tell the class when a new topic is introduced. Her method of teaching sometimes has nothing to do solving the problems. If I had a dollar every time I wished I had a different professor, I would be a millionaire.
Angela is one of the most ridiculous professors I have ever encountered in my entire life. Words cannot explain truly how insane this woman is. If you have to take her, drop the class and wait for a better professor. She wastes time during lectures, and her exams are absurdly long given the time she gives you. She is actually delusional. RUN.
Despite what a lot of people say, I really liked Professor Athanas. I feel that she really cared about students learning the material and wanted her students to do well. She was a bit disorganized, but I think overall she did a great job at explaining the concepts in a way that I could understand.
run. idk what else to say but run. wait for another professor, wait for summer, idk but run.
Professor Athanas' class can be challenging, but with dedication and tools like unstuckstudy ai, you can succeed. The lectures may feel disorganized, but attending and engaging is key. Prepare thoroughly for exams, as curves are rare. Overall, a demanding yet rewarding experience.
