You better in interested in this class when you take it. Get ready to ask questions and be very nosy...
Professor Bratton is an awesome teacher. She's still young, and she really feels for the plight of the college student. If anyone fails this class, it is because they are too lazy to read the assignments (which are all pretty interesting).

Fun, interesting class. I was not too interested in this class before but it turned out to be a favorite. She obviously cares about what she's talking about and does a good job in making you care too. Pay attention in class, take decent notes, you will make an A and actually have fun and learn a little bit along the way!
Great professor. To echo another comment - to fail is to be lazy. Pay attention, take notes, you'll get an A. Her tests are mildly difficult, but it's all covered in the text & notes - you just have to read. Highly recommend taking her, she got me very interested in Anthropology.
Great teacher...The tests are a bit difficult but she makes them easier with her lectures. very interesting. I'm taking her next semester! She's Awesome! Just don't be lazy and pay attention. Gives lots of Extra Credit.
Smart lady, new to teaching but tries real hard. Take notes, participate, and read the material before class and you can make an A. She provides review for the tests and plenty of opportunities for extra credit. Hope she stays around. Real classy lady.
Sweet lady and easy class. Don't need to do too much reading, but remember to do those short journals! Papers are short and very easy. Tests are all mult-choice and will cover some material she doesn't go over in class; you get that skimming the book. Have someone sign in for you on the attendance sheet if you can't make it. Made a B+ in her class.
This should be an easy A for most people. The class is very easy & Dr. Bratton is a good teacher. Class was interesting, and I didn't read any of the books and still came out with an A. If you can, take this class.
I did all the work and Failed all the test but I pasted with a B...Read what you can and it won't be that hard.
I've had Dr.B for a few classes here at ASU. She is straightforward, with a heavy knowledge of Africa for a white gal. She has rigourous demands, but does not give assignments that are not pertinent to the course. She is easy to converse with and fun to hang out with.
I've had bratton for intro, cultural and 3 upper level classes, She's a wonderful profes. and really personable..but she make you read a crazy lot of articles so be ready...she gives reading quizes that anyone could pass even if you just skimmed. Take her I loved all her classes and cause of her I'm grading with a minor in anthro.
Dr. Bratton's class is pretty easy. You don't really have to read any of the articles because she goes over them in class. Don't be late though. If you missed when the attendace sheet was passed around she won't let you sign it, even if you were only 5 min. late. She didn't give any pop quizzes. Take this class, it's an easy A.
She is an ok person. She need to learn how to control her anger. When she is absent and on person makes her reputation look bad, she gets pissed with the whole class. I would not take her again.
I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Bratton is great. The class is easy. All you have to do is study the powerpoints she goes over in class and read the books. It is a lot of reading, but most of the readings are actually interesting. Would highly recommend. Easy class to pass!!!
She is a very nice teacher and was very enthusiastic about the class. Some of her test questions were hard, but in general it was a very easy class. There are 4 written assignements and she gave a chance to earn 30 points of extra credit (the class was on the point stystem)Overall an easy A!
Her class is differnt, but interesting. She can sometimes really have an A-tude. The test are easy if you study the material or not. Overall her class was fine.
This class was interesting. All you need to do is take the notes, listen, do the provided study guides, and read the assigned chapters. A lot of the test questions come from the reading, so just pace yourself and you won't have an issue. I loved this class and am taking Bratton for a few uppers these coming semesters. Easy A.
For an intro class Bratton's expectations for the class seemed unrealistic at best. She assigns way too many writing excercises and can be overly critical in grading. Bottom line: save yourself the headache and just take someone else. RB
Anyone who thinks Bratton's expectations as unrealistic is a slacker- you will get a great grade if you put the effort into the assignments. 5 small reflections, 2 major papers, and 3 tests, that isn't a lot of work, and if you do it all you won't have an issue in her class. Test material is all from lecture and reading, there aren't any surprises.
She is really nice, not to much work... however her grading is a little strict so review your papers and maybe even take it to the writing lab. Other than that I really enjoyed the class.
A very thorough course to learn about culture in basically all facets of a society. Her class is very standard: lecture and notes everyday. If you like a class where you can blend into the crowd while still achieving a high grade, this class is right for you. Answers any question clearly. She does seem to relate everything back to Africa, though.
She is a pretty good professor. Everyday its notes and she runs over the class time. Class is not hard as long as you do the reading and put in the effort. Attendance it mandatory. Take her, easy grade.
Not a bad teacher at all. And that comes from a bio major. tests are heavy from the textbook and online stuff and can be kind of tricky. papers are graded a little harsher than I would have liked. GO TO CLASS. don't miss many days because her 'participation grade' policy will hurt you. It hurt me. Treat it like a real class tho its probably an A.
Good professor, has a very liberal attendance policy.WATCH OUT,any absences count against your partcptn grade, which is 200 points. Tests can be tricky,so don't rush and double check answers,be sure to watch all online videos w/chptr.She uses every millisecond of class,so make sure your next class is not across campus.
you must read in her class. she does give extra credit. please do the extra credit or you will fail! Because here tests are extremely hard.
Attendance policy is ridiculous. i missed 4 days in a 3 day/week course and she failed me in participation (20% of my grade) which gave me a B in the class when i received A's on nearly all assignments. Thinks her class is the most important. not an awful class, but she, as a person, is bad.
Ms. B class was interesting. Her lectures were not boring. test are okay bc she will have a review the day before, however test were little harder than expected bc of unclarity. The writings for text are no problem, but the two analysis, omg..go to writing lab bc she will take points off like no other if u do not write like a top anthropologist!
I think someone wrote something about her before and it got deleted. She definitely is a globalist. I wouldn't be surprised if she sold this country out in the name of "global interests." Take a political science class instead and learn how to protect your freedom and rights.
Soooo boring. If you're not into anthropology and you don't need to take this course, dont! I made it out with a C. She is a nice professor though
Avoid this prof. She teaches from her own agenda.Despite the class being "Cultural" Anthro, she concentrates only on Africa.Frowns on any discussion from the class. Is strict on student attendance, yet missed multiple classes herself, while she was out she still required her students to come and watch terrible movies with along with a worksheet! Lame.
Seems nice is helpful but she grades hard. Material is very interesting but you will be required to do 5 reflection papers for the semester, two major papers 1st: 4-5 pages long 2nd: 6-8 pages long, and 3 test 50 questions long. Grades as if she were an English professor. final is test #3 and is not comprehensive
Comparative African cultures. VERY interesting, however, VERY involved. There are 3 books(not expensive) and many articles, which makes for heavy reading. also had many papers along with reflections on two black history month events, a book review, and a project/long research paper over an ethnic group. Would be easier if not taken w/ Humanities!!
She's amazing. Take her class. The end.
I'm not sure why you WOULD take this class if you're not interested in Anthropology. Regardless, Dr. Bratton is a great professor. She's clear on what she wants and what you should know. She also expects college-level work since we are in COLLEGE. If you're not going to come to class/be on time, waste your money elsewhere. Definitely taking again!
Food & Culture. Very interesting, and you get to go out to eat a few times!! Do your readings on time, and you'll do fine (: All of the books are very inexpensive
This is good professor, but it seems as if she tries to trick students. Her tests are tricky and the study guides help what so ever. Essays are easy! No quizzes! Overall, she isn't that hard but please take notes and study what you know! Attendance is mandatory! Miss a lot of days and your final grade will result in a lower letter grade!
Dr. Bratton is great! she is really exited about what she teaches her assignments are reasonable and if you want to do well in the class she wont let you down! Take her!!!!
LOVE this course. Prof. Bratton is very knowledgable. Course is all lecture, but the topics/assigned reading are so interesting. If you do assigned reading before class, you can participate much better in class discussion. No assigned homework except a few essays. Exams are a breeze if you take good notes. Definitely recommend.
Yes, she is an Africanist, and will spend a lot of her time using her field experience as examples......however....how else would you want to learn, a bunch of theory, or experience? Great teacher, really understanding, and loves being involved and helping students. Also is the adviser to SAS, the Student Anthropological Society.
Do not need the book for her class, she gives notes and handouts online. Very good prof. teaches very clearly and fair. Fun class discussions. Easy assignments, easy A.
The class is extremely easy. My letter grade, even with a zero for attendance was a high c. I made A's on both papers, and B's on each test. She automatically failed me and several others because we missed more than six classes. She waited until after we took the final to let us know. Save the headache and take another easy class instead.
I did find this class interesting and Prof.Bratton is a great prof. However, I didn't like how strict she was on participation and attendance.I'm in college and if I feel confident to miss more than 6 classes and still get As on everything,I don't think I should get a 0 in participation. She failed some students completely.Skip her or go 2 class.
I love Dr. Bratton. She tells interesting stories and her lectures are on power points so they are very easy to follow. Her tests come straight from the notes. She gives 2 books to read along with textbooks. Read the books and do the reflections. There are two 5-7 page papers but can be easily written within a day. I highly recommend her to anyone.
Love her! She loves what she teaches and it makes it so much easier to learn. She gives study guides for the tests to fill out as you read. A lot of reading but only 3 exams 2 big papers and 5 small papers. Very Easy!
Dr. Bratton is by far one of my favorite professors. She is very enthusiastic about Anthropology and explains nearly everything in her lectures. You don't have to read the textbook, but recommended for extra clarity. Tests are fairly easy, grading is very fair. Its not a handout class, so you must attend class and study, but very fun.
Dr.Bratton was great as far as teaching goes. I passed the class with an A but it took an excessive amount of studying for an entry level class. Also, her expectations for papers were not very clear so it was pretty hit or miss with the grading.
the class was easy ..... and boring ,I wouldnt have made it if my friends werent in their with me . Professor Bratton was a very impatient person to be honest ,she would get an attitude with you in a spit second . Also the papers that we had to right,I thought was pointless, but that's just my opinion. But take the class, its and easy A.
She lost one of my papers which irritated me, but overall she was very easy. The papers are pretty simple and she wasn't completely boring.
Really nice and helpful. Read, take notes, you'll pass.
She is a nice, sweet person, but her lectures can be pretty boring. You have to come to class to pass the tests. The tests are 60% lecture and 40% reading (there is a lot of reading). If you put a lot of effort into studying and reading, you will get an A or B. She gives 3 "free passes" that can be used on essays you don't do or classes you missed.
89's on two excellent papers. I mean these were pure golden essays. They deserved A's. Anyways, the two 89's disheartened me. It's like she is saying, "It doesn't matter what you do. You will get a B". Also, her tests always have like 4 questions which are impossible, insuring you get a b. This all made me give up, and i got a C. Hated Her.
Fabulous Professor! She is very passionate about what she teaches, and it shows. Make sure you do all the readings that are assigned. It is easy to fall behind if you don't. Two main papers are worth most of your grade, so take them seriously, and you will do fine!
I took her during the summer, biggest mistake was staying in her class. Summer was five weeks long, she gave us tests (complicated) and long papers (pointless) back-to-back. I barely had enough time to study considering I was worried about turning her papers in. I don't like her!!!!!! AVOID HER
She is extremely hard and grades papers like no other. She took off 5 points for putting a comma in the wrong place and gave me a 72 for a paper that "didn't have enough detail" when I wrote 6 pages. She is so hard. I would avoid her at all costs.
She is a good teacher because it is obvious she is passionate about anthropology. However, there are times when she comes off as rude to her students. She can also be a very tough grader! She will take off 5 points for a grammatical error (in an anthropology class). She also assigns a ton of readings.
Her lectures are boring and i don't blame people for falling asleep in her class. Her tests aren't that bad. The 2nd test will be tough and she even told us when the semester started. Her papers can be a pain to write, but follow the directions and you will make an A on all four. She assigns reading, but you don't have to read the book to pass.
She was really tough on papers. For someone who expects so much out of her students, it's a wonder why she isn't more specific on her qualifications for papers. I'm an English major with a job in writing yet I still managed to get a 78 on one of her papers. Beware! Otherwise she's alright. Honestly, she's pretty boring though.
Unclear about what she wants in papers. Can't write legibly at all. Lectures are so boring. Tests formats okay, but a lot of trick questions (all of the above/a&c/none of above). A lot of reading and papers for a summer class. Tough on grammar which should not be her main focus. Can be rude.
Lectures weren't too bad. I liked that the reading was supplemental to the lectures and not the exact same thing. She takes too many points off for grammatical errors. To give an example, she docked a ton of points because I "didn't have a thesis." I clearly had a thesis. I make As on English and Composition papers, she gave me a B and a C.
Dr. Bratton is passionate about her classes. She fills the classroom with interesting lectures, guest speakers, and supplemental videos. When taking her be attentive and ready to learn. Pop quizzes are to be expected and if you are more than seven minutes late you will miss the quiz completely.
Great professor. Gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and her lectures are great. The reading is heavy though, and expect to discuss it in class. Her papers aren't difficult, but she doesn't explain what she wants very well. All in all, a great professor.
She knows what she is talking about. Her lectures can be interesting, but they have lots of information in them. The concepts are not difficult to understand, and she gives good study guides. If you send her your essays before they are due, she will tell you what to fix. Her exams are okay as long as you do the reading.
Dont take her. you'll thank me later.
Dr. Bratton is a very knowledgeable professor in her field. She is lecture heavy, but I found it very interesting. She takes attendance every day, and participation in class discussions matter. There are three exams, two big papers, five reflection papers, and multiple opportunities for extra credit. If you show up and take notes youll do well.
Tests are half lecture notes, half from the reading so do the reading!! sparknotes only helps so much. Take all assignments serious because there arent that many. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT, its what pushed my high B to an A.
For a 5 week summer class she assigned way too much work. She expects you to spend 3 hours a day on her class so don't try to take this class on a full course load. She grades papers more harshly than any English professor at the school and assigns work that is almost impossible to accomplish during a condensed semester.
Im taking her summer class now . She a Very harsh grader. She has 4 papers due every week. Test are impossible to past. Dont take her
Dr. Bratton gives great lectures, they follow the text book very well, and you can tell she cares a lot about the material. Allowed 5 absences, but any more is a deduction from your grade. Tests are average, if you do all the readings you'll pass. Gives a LOT of extra credit options that are available until last day of class.
Dr. Bratton is a fantastic professor. Her content is very engaging and she always makes sure that her students have opportunities to discuss the material. Tests draw from the lectures, books, and articles we read. There are also 7 papers: two long essays and five two-page reflection papers. This is a very easy class as long as you apply yourself.
Worst professor ever. Does not know how to grade papers. DO NOT TAKE HER. I hated this class so much.
I've had 5 of her upper-level classes and 1 lower level, and she always gives us tons of articles to read, although they're very interesting. Her assignments are not super easy, but if you read and put a little effort in then you'll do great, and you may find yourself majoring in anthro! She's very nice and cares about her students and lessons.
She is a HARSH GRADER! you will get docked for the tiniest errors but the problem is that the rubric are not very clear on what she wants and she will not go over it in class . The test are very tough as well , the only way you will succeed in this class is if you have prior knowledge or experience in the subject .
Randomly said the C slur during lecture. Easy class but boring to listen to. Let me go the whole semester with good grades just to fail me for participation without sending an email. Wont be taking anthropology or this professor again.
Professor Bratton is a good instructor, but she does have high expectations and sometimes does not communicate those expectations very well. Her lectures are ok but can be a lot to process.
Took her Fall 2023 & she was not that bad. Definitely a heavy workload & lots of reading, also had reflections due throughout the semester & exams. However, she prepares you for all of it. As long as you actually do read, attend class, & are prepared to do a lot of work, if you are interested in the topic it's not too bad.
Dr. Bratton is highly educated and passionate about what she discusses. I see a lot of reviews on here saying she's a tough grader, which is not necessarily untrue, but I feel is mildly exaggerated. Write good and you'll get a fine grade. She responds to emails quickly and is open to meetings outside of class. As an Anth major, I'd take her again.
she's very nice and cool, but she grades strictly. Will dock your assignment/grade for the smallest grammar error. Gives too many books to read (which would be ok), if she didn't make you have to read them back to back. Says random slurs (not in an offensive way, but still could've just said it was directed to a certain race), wouldn't recommend.
Hilarious, blunt professor, had me laughing at times. Good starting point, but her rote leftist feminist bias infects every lecture. Talks way too much, turning the class into her soapbox while using questionable sources. It feels more like indoctrination than education, not to mention the grading is oddly strict.
I would not recommend this class unless you truly need to take it. There are alot of reading assignments within the class. There are a few written assignments and the Professor is very particular about grammar and sentence structure. If you do take: 1) HARD GRADER! 2) Attend all classes and take apart in decisions. Make connections to the material!
Dr. Bratton is a well-respected and amazing professor! There are a lot of articles, but each one is very interesting, make sure to take notes. Attend her lectures and participate in her in-class discussions. There are Essays and she is a strict grader, but as long as you read the feedback and adjust your paper you'll be fine. Great professor.
Excellent professor! Dr. Bratton is very knowledgeable and thoroughly talks about the units being taught. There is a hefty load of readings, but the articles are fascinating. Make sure to answer the reading questions; if you don't understand them, ask her. There are two essay exams, one research paper, and one group project.
The class was okay, but there was a lot of reading to do back-to-back. The instructor is a tough grader and seems to care more about grammar than the content itself. The lectures were boring, and I wouldn't take this class again.
Be prepared on long, boring lectures. She expects participation, and if you don't know something you've already talked about she's a bit passive aggressive about you not remembering. Also check the syllabus constantly, she updates it constantly and doesn't let you know when things are due or upcoming. I personally would not take this class again.
Lectures are hit or miss, but the vast majority settle with just being average and boring. Attendance is mandatory despite most lectures being somewhat common sense. Exams are online and not too difficult, mostly just based on readings. Readings are very frequent and are also hit or miss. Class isn't too hard and you can get away with skimming.
She's a fun professor, just the lectures were incredibly lengthy and every second of class is lecture. Easy papers and assignments, just several smallish writing assignments and you have to read SO MANY BOOKS/ARTICLES. Other than that she's pretty chill.
Lots of reading but she clearly knows her stuff. I enjoyed it so much that (if it weren't for all the reading and writing) I would change my major to anthropology if I wanted to change my major.
