The textbook perfectly summarizes notes for this course. Regardless, Dr. Crane made us recopy notes making it less unorganized. The first midterm was harder than anyone expected with questions never seen on capa assignments or examples. She put short answer questions on the exam which is usually MC, making it difficult to complete in one hour.
Her first midterm was extremely hard with questions not from the book or on capa assignments.
She is really a knowledgeable, energetic, funny prof and she's the material seem easy, but don't be fooled because your GPA will suffer.
She's awesome in lecture. One complaint I have is the waste of time going through examples already worked out in the book and skipping some exercises not worked out in the book. CAPA assignments are easy enough BUT DO NOT PREPARE YOU FOR THE MIDTERM. MIDTERM WAS DEATH, with very difficult theory questions, and an hour is NOT ENOUGH TIME.
Honestly enjoyed her lectures and felt as though I was learning a lot. However her midterm term was out of control challenging, and none of the questions were like anything I had seen. Overall sucky bc u can be able to do all the assignments and still not know anything for the test.
Don't even bother trying to study bc you can use all the tools she gives u and still the questions on the midterm will be like nothing you will have seen
Don't bother going to lectures because the midterm left most students feeling like they failed. 1-2 free response questions actually means 7 and the theory questions were not covered in the lectures or the book.
Dr. Crane was very thorough and explained things well in lectures. However, her midterm was ridiculous - it covered absolutely nothing from the book, lectures, or CAPA assignments. Therefore, it was almost impossible to prepare. If you want to keep your GPA up, I wouldn't recommend 1st year chem at all, and especially not Dr. Crane.
I don't believe a prof can be judged on difficulty alone although I do think the test was extremely hard. Besides that, Dr. Crane puts everything she has into the lectures. You can tell she loves the subject and she tries to make the class love it too. If it wasn't for the exam, I truly think Dr. Crane is an amazing professor.
A prof can be judged on how difficult their tests are. CAPA assignments and book examples DID NOT prepare us for the midterm. A few questions were similar, but overall most were one's that weren't practiced on through assignments. One hour is NOT enough time for all those multiple choice questions and SEVEN free response.
If you are ready to put a lot of time into studying her exams are not that terrible. She is so good at explaining concepts and tries to make students enjoy Chemistry.
She is terrible prof. Midterms are out of this world difficult. No way to prepare. Talks super fast with very confusing explanations. Best of luck, seriously.
Spends a lot of time on easy concepts in lecture while briefly skimming over harder concepts. On the exam, there is an emphasis on the harder concepts as opposed to the more abundant easier concepts which Crane spent excessive amounts of time explaining in lecture.
He first mid-term was extremely difficult. The class average was really low comparing to previous year. She even did not rescale the marks. All of her examples in class were easy and never complicated, as well CAPA assignments, and mid-term review question. But, the midterm was much difficult and there was no time.
There are 2 different sections, "overall quality" and "level of difficulty". Overall, many students agree that her teaching methods are great, she makes the material seem so interesting. I think her "overall" rating is inaccurate, but I agree with the level of difficulty.
Although the first midterm was hard, Angela did everything possible to prepare us for the second midterm. She focuses heavily on the concept side of things rather than the math side. She is very enthusiastic and makes content interesting. if you go to class, do CAPA assignments by yourself and put effort into studying you should do ok in the class.
Dr. Crane is lovely, constantly tries to make chemistry interesting for her students, has the best real-life examples and is super sweet and approachable. To those complaining about the midterm - she very specifically told us the exams are written by a team of people, not just her. I would take another class with her in a heartbeat.
Guys, she was a great professor, extremely kind and caring; the Midterm was an accident by the CHEM DEPARTMENT - not Angela. She was kind to prepare us REALLY well for the 2nd midterms and most of the students got 90+%. It was her first time at Dal, you guys were too quick to judge her. For any prospective students, Angela is an awesome prof.
1st year chemistry is the wrecker of dreams, especially when the support system is supporting my own fear of chemistry. My best advice is look over all the practice problems posted before tests, that will be your best bet at predicting what sorcery the chemistry dept will come up with for a test, don't panic it's only chemistry you still have life
The facts are Crane isn't a bad teacher - many people will disagree though. The CHEM 1012 course was definitely one of the hardest classes I've taken and the exams are extremely difficult for this class. What is covered in lecture is taught well; but the testable material is not covered in class. My advice; pray and hope for mercy! I was lucky!!!
The whole point of the First Year Chemistry program at Dal is to thin the herd. The course is intentionally challenging to prepare for future science/Chem courses. Dr. Crane got a bad rep because of the first test of the semester & had to spend the rest of the spring doing damage control. I really did enjoy her in lecture, you can tell she cares!!
I'm retaking 2nd semester chem a third time. I've worked extremely hard every time trying to get an A. Dr. Crane loves equilibrium, thermodynamics, and rates of reactions and she will stop at nothing to make these topics as confusing as possible on a test. Make sure you really know these topics inside out and can relate them to everything else
I took Chem 1 at a different university with a different prof and got an A. I expect to maybe get a C+ with Angela. Chemistry itself isn't hard but she will convince you otherwise. She's nice & cares about the subject, but the testing is ridiculous and totally overboard.
Don't let things in this course get to you. You're better than chemistry. Dr. Crane stands in your way for glory. Defeat her and leave her with nothing. Move on with your life and prepare for the next try hard prof. I've taken this course 3 times, just put in work and when you think you are done keep studying. You need instant recall for the tests
Dr. Crane has her heart in the right place but just isn't the greatest at teaching. She does easy examples in class and then asks questions on tests that you've never seen. I loved chemistry in high school and I have now learned to hate it.
Angela is really passionate about chemistry which is what you want in a prof, but as interesting as the thermodynamics behind boiling eggs on top of mount Everest are, I would prefer she went over things that are actually gonna be on the exams in class instead of incredibly easy examples and superficial information. Or make CAPA q's more like exams
Angela clearly puts in lots of work into her lectures. She likes to draw in real life material to make the concepts seem more applicable. The first midterm is hard but if you study hard there shouldn't be a problem. The second midterm is much easier. As long as you pay attention and go to class there shouldn't be a problem.
I honestly loved Angela - the first midterm is extremely hard however I think they purposely do it! Angelas teaching was great she prepares you for the exams but in order to do well you need to do ALL the practice problems and review as much as possible and its not bad at all. Loved Angela overall. Would definitely recommend.
Angela was super spirited and really helpful outside of the lecture. She was sometimes hard to follow because she moves quickly but she explains the subjects well and really helps you get into the material.
Angela is such a great lecturer. She explains the concepts really well and in depth. Very good at pointing out the nuances and important things that will make you do better. She truly goes out of her way to help the students, and is clearly passionate about chemistry. Highly recommend her as a prof, would love to have her as a prof again.
Angela is a good professor who cares for her students and goes over the concepts well in class, although she does skip a lot of mathematical steps a lot of the time. She is super enthusiastic and approachable but the testing component of this course is crazy. You need to be able to regurgitate the information instantly, otherwise risk failing.
The lectures are okay and posted online in case you miss them, but the questions done in class and on CAPA don't compare to the toughness on the tests. Dr. Crane spends time on fun facts that keep you awake but in the end, don't prepare you to study. The outline for the final also felt way off of what was actually on it.
Her exams are fair, she really preps you for the worst so her exams always end up being not so bad. Best part is that her exams aren't long. The textbooks aren't outdated so USE THEM. Her quizzes are simple, do the minimum study for them and it'll get ya extra points. Don't stress, she's a fair prof, you just have to put in work. good luck!
Overall a good professor, however don't expect to not put in the effort and do well in this course. First midterm was challenging, but the second was much easier. The exam was a little difficult, so make sure you study hard for midterms and exams. I would recommend looking through the notes she posts online; they are an excellent reference.
Dr. Crane was awesome! So funny, so smart, super engaging. You can tell how much she cares about her students success in her voice. Provides lots of resources outside of lecture. Also tends to create her own examples similar to the textbook questions so you can use the textbook ones for practice on your own. Definitely recommend her!
she brings her questions from the moon
Shes passionate, but does not teach whats needed for the exams/midterms. You would think the practice problems are similar to the test, but not in her lectures! Tries too hard to be relatable. I did not enjoy her class. If you are taking Chem 1011 make sure you put in a lot of effort and just keep practicing, thats how I survived the term.
Angela gets a lot more hate than she deserves. Yes, the exams are hard, but go to class, do all the CAPA questions, and read the book and you'll be fine. Her lectures are well prepared and she is extremely organized. Overall, she's a funny, caring professor who tries her best to make sure you do well if you're willing to put in the work.
Lecture examples and practice are mostly nothing like the test. Homework on CAPA takes longer to type in properly than to actually solve the question. Lecture notes have mistakes in the example calculations that can throw off you're understanding of theory that was taught prior. Make sure to read the textbook AND her notes to find mistakes.
Her lectures are somewhat fun and she tends to teach the content at a very basic level. But her tests are much more challenging!
Crane's lectures really only teach you the basics of each topic. The tests are much, much harder than the homework and questions taught in class. The average on the second midterm was a 61%. The first midterm went really poorly for the majority of the class as well. I don't feel that her lectures prepared me for the testing component of the class.
good luck everyone taking this with Crane. you feel confident through out the semester because the questions in class are 100 times easier than those on the final. DONT GO TO CRANE
The material was pretty simple, but the tests are long and very difficult. The way the course is formatted makes it really stressful, lots of homework, probably my least favourite class.
Do not believe what you hear or read about her. Take the course and see for yourselves how caring and organized she is. Although her exams are a bit long it is not that hard if you were focused during the lectures.
Angela does give good lectures and presents the material well. You will feel confident with the material after doing the practice problems, going to class, and doing CAPA. However the exams are nothing like anything in the HW and theyre super hard and long. She can also be quite rude and unhelpful. If you want to pass to pass this class do Prep101
Great prof, explains the concepts and techniques really well, however the examples she does in class are much easier than her exam papers. The tests are long and challenging and you might find yourself thinking Ive never seen this in class before. But shes a good prof regardless, very passionate about chemistry
Pretty good prof, tried to make class fun but ended up wasting a lot of time that we then had to rush through material to make up for. Does lots of examples though so helped. Midterms were okay but I studied hard for them. Gotta be committed
Took 3 days to get through the 3 required syllabus modules in her class. Tricky syllabus and testing on 3 different platforms all with various due times. Chem has always been my favorite subject but this class is designed to weed people out and its so unappreciated when you're paying 5k for a semester. Does not inspire learning at all.
I loved this class so much with Dr. Crane. Of all my online classes, this was the only well-organized and structured class. Her lectures are very easy to understand. The homework, quizzes and exam are all at the same difficulty so there are never unfair surprises in material.
Unless you're amazing at Chem, I wouldn't recommend this class with her. She posts long lectures every week with quiz yourself sections, she is supposed to post answer videos but depending on the week she does or doesn't post them. She will only answer certain questions, otherwise you have to see someone else or go to the discussion board.
Dr. Crane was my best online professor this semester. The lectures were long, but organized and very helpful. The weekly problem solving workshop was incredibly helpful. Quizzes and homework questions are quite straight forward. However, the exams are a bit difficult because there are no part marks and each question is weighted heavily.
Not a good explainer, very busy and demanding
Very good professor. I enjoy their teaching style. Approachable. Could not have asked for a better professor. It is obvious that they have invested hours of their own time to make the most out of online learning. Chemistry was a true pleasure this term.
This is the only professor I had that provided lectures and workshops, she explained things in a way I could understand. As long as you watch the lectures and attend the workshops, the class is not that difficult. She is a great teacher and the only one I was able to say she supported me this semester.
dr crane was one of the best professors I had this semester. the lectures were full of examples and information that were relevant to the tests and exams. the workshops were very helpful with more examples so I was always prepared for things.
Had Crane for both CHEM1011 and 1012 in 2019. She is very straight to the point and very good at what she does and offers a million different resources in case you got lost along the way. The course, like any other chem course, is dense, but as long as you attend the lectures and do the work then you will definitely pass Crane's class.
Overall just doesnt help out much, course formatting is lazy, exam and test content dont relate to course that much, no in person grading even though they use an outdated and sometimes broken system.
Worst professor I have ever had. I would retake the class if it was offered with a different professor but there are no other options at Dal, unfortunately.
This is by far the single-most work-heavy class I've ever taken thus far. Every single day I'm doing something for chem, and haven't even had the chance to look at my other classes. She does "flipped learning" which is supposed to aid students but only gives more stress. She wastes lecture time doing easy questions instead of difficult ones.
Very disorganised, 59 page syllabus that could have been sub 10 easily, way too many moving parts worth points, refuses to be wrong/take blame for mistakes.
The least understanding teacher I have ever met. She somehow manages to make the simplest things extremely complicated. She doesn't even do her own lectures, she gets someone else in the chemistry department to do them. Definitely the type of teacher that doesn't want students to succeed. She has single-handedly ruined my experience in chemistry :(
She wont listen when there are issues or concerns. Makes you feel like a number and not a human being.
People complain there too much pre/post class questions, but thats nearly a quarter of the grades up for an easy grab, you can submit answer multiple times until you get it on the pre class question which is worth nearly 20% of total grade. and your lowest exam grade can only be worth 5%, I mean if you dont study ofc you are going to find it hard..
I learned more from Khan Academy and other YouTube channels tbh. I never felt like she taught me anything, blasts through content and breakneck speeds, testing does not (mostly) provide partial marks as you have to get the answer perfectly to get the grade. With that said, she does provide a lot of resources for you to learn and get easy grades.
She doesnt really care about the students. You cant ask questions in class. Fall 2021 they did a flipped classroom. Had to watch double the amount of lectures - teach yourself on the asynchronous ones and the textbook (which doesnt include answers so you dont know if youre doing it right) and then go to class for graded participation :/
I took Chem 1011 with Angela and Im quite conflicted on how to rate her. On one hand, some of the most stressful moments of my first semester were created by her and I was sure she was enjoying my torment. But at the same time, its easy to get a good grade in this course because of her grading scheme. I think the course is just better in-person.
The pre-class videos basically act as your lecture and then the actual lecture is going over examples. I did like this, the pre-class videos were very helpful & it was nice to take it at your own speed. However, the tests do not match the pre-class videos, post-topic checkpoints, or most practice questions and you end up feeling lost come the test
Hated how there were mostly no part marks on the CAPA exams. If you get the answer wrong because of a silly little error in your calculations, Angela doesn't care as she only wants to see your answer and not your workings. And if you got the right answer but typed it wrong according to CAPA standards, say bye-bye to all your marks.
The marking scheme is incredibly fair and allows students the opportunity to pass the class with an A even if you fail one or two exams. Dr. Crane posted asynchronous lectures for those who couldnt make it to class and they were extremely helpful
The grading scheme for the class made it really easy to get an A, provided you do put in the effort. This is a class that you'll have to review and complete work for a few times a week, as once you are behind it is tough to catch up. The material was taught in an effective way, with lots of support if needed.
Dr. Crane is great at conveying complicated concepts and accurately assessing material comprehension among her students. Dr. Cranes lectures are full of helpful examples which enabled students to immediately grasp the solution processes and theories she covered. She is always willing to answer questions and help students outside of class.
im not sure why she has such a low rating here, but i did find her to be quite a decent prof. maybe the issue is the use of CAPA. i found her lectures to be pretty good. there was a lot of practice material to aid the learning. highly appreciate that.
Capa questions were usually a mess of mistakes made by question writers, and its frustrating having no part marks available. Marking scheme makes it quite easy to pass in my opinion, but assignments and exams can be frustrating. Towards the end of semester the discussion boards were not being monitored much by the TAs, which was frustrating.
This class is easy enough to do well in because of how the points are distributed, but beyond that, this class was the worst part of my first year. CAPA is badly coded and although there are many multi-part questions, you don't get partial points if even one of your answers is incorrect. I would've dropped the class if it wasn't a prerequisite.
Dr. Crane is an excellent prof and despite the difficulties of CAPA, does her best to ensure that everyone does well in the course
I was not a fan of Dr. Crane at first because she assigned a lot of homework and exams were difficult, but she gives you lots of opportunity to do well in this course. Chemistry was my heaviest work load, but highest grade.
Angela is passionate about the subject, but I really didn't enjoy this course. Grade scheme they use makes it stupid easy to pass, which I can appreciate. All tests homework and exams were facilitated through CAPA which is not a good system. Questions are often full of mistakes and it often didn't mark correctly. No partial points was ridiculous.
I agree with others that CAPA is the greatest flaw in this course. Every exam/test it seemed they had to make announcements about errors in the coding of questions, or that CAPA simply was lagging/unusable at times. Questions could easily be constructed in a way to allow for some partial points, but I guess Angela doesn't care.
Dr. Crane is committed to the success of her students and the accessibility of the class. Plenty of opportunities to raise your grade (group exams, in class engagement question) and get free marks. Exams were a little out of pocket for 1012 but there are opportunities to offset
Dr. Crane is very passionate about the subject and is a good lecturer. Amazing grading scheme as well with lots of chances to do better. However, all assignments/examinations were through CAPA, which was always lagging/glitching. Also, there were no partial points given on exams, which is a bit ridiculous for a chemistry course in my opinion.
Course would be much better if CAPA ever worked. The platform used for tests, homework and exams was full of mistakes in questions, and it would often crash. No partial points is utter nonsense. She's passionate, but I'm not a fan of her style. Grade scheme makes it easy to pass. Exams often had decent amount of unfamiliar material.
I seriously did not appreciate the lack of partial points in the exams. If a student made a calculator error, but all their steps were right, they get a 0. The prof apparently only cares about typing the answer correctly on CAPA and not your actual step-by-step process in acquiring the answer. Also CAPA always had technical problems
Not cooperative at all.
really enjoyed chem 1011 even though I hate chem!
Really passionate, and lots of wiggle roomto get an easy A.
I disliked Crane and her teaching methods very much. First year chem is fairly easy however, she ruins the whole experience. She does not care about her students and does not realize that switching up test dates affects her students and how well they do. Class is an easy A though.
The professor is making a lot of grade errors throughout the course.
Easy A, but very difficult to pay attention to. Not a huge fan of her teaching style, but very do-able.
You want a bad first-year university life? Come to Chem 1011/1021 and do the syllable module quiz. It's almost the first and only big problem you will face in first semester.
Awful course. Dr. Crane seems like a sweet person but chemistry class is awful. I hate CAPA questions and there are no half points awarded in exams most of the time. My lab was rescheduled three times in one week. The XP component is so unnecessarily complicated and time wasting. I actually considered dropping chem and taking it at SMU.
flipped learning is the worst concept ever invented and is just an excuse to be lazy. do not take this course with this prof.
As a 2nd year science student who has taken this course with Dr. Crane, I can honestly say she has the best organization & communication skills compared to my 2nd yr chem profs. She has great teaching methods and thoroughly explains each topic. Initially, she wasn't my favourite prof but after comparing her to my 2nd yr profs she is outstanding.
Flipped learning is awful. You teach yourself the entire course and going to lectures is pointless and are recaps of what they expect you to have learned the night before using videos that are years old. The 5 unit tests (mastery exams) cram an entire unit into 30 or 40 minute exams. The average test scores are between 40 and 60%.
One of the worst courses offered in all of Dalhousie and that's saying something. Dr. Crane, despite average test scores over the years being 40 - 60%, continues to blame students for her own shortcomings. The teaching style is paraded as new and inventive but the videos are ancient and awful. My only advice for future students is to RUN!
Angela Crane's "Flipped learning" idea is a really nice way of saying she realized she could be lazy and just reuse video resources, defeating the purpose of her as an instructor. Next to an overcomplicated "XP" grading system, it made learning far more strenuous as it's all self-taught. This course actively made me lose interest in Chemistry.
Angela Crane's "flipped learning" system is a really nice way of saying she got lazy and made the course entirely self-taught with recycled video resources, defeating the purpose of her as an instructor. The "XP" grading system is also needlessly overcomplicated. My learning experience with her made me actively lose interest in chemistry.
Shes BK
At first the flipped learning style was daunting but as the semester progressed I enjoyed it. I found lectures went by quick as you had been exposed to the material and you got to use that knowledge to answer questions. The XP system was confusing but as long as you do the practice questions and watch the videos you can get an easy 100 on the XPs.
Dr. Crane is a great prof :) She explains concepts in a simple and easy to understand manner. The fact that it's flipped learning, there is clear and reasonable marking criteria :) thanks Dr. Crane for a memorable semester!
This course takes a lot of time and effort but Dr. Crane is a great help and always available for her office hours. Good luck!
You need to work on everything before class. Lots of work! Angela (5 stars) is a great teacher but the class itself was too much (3 stars).
Dr. Crane actually does examples in lecture and makes use of my time. She is also very personable unlike Dr. Andreas who I had first semester.
Dr. Crane seems to be passionate about chemistry but the flipped learning style is the worst. Everything is done outside of lecture so there's no point in going. The XP system is needlessly confusing, but lots of points are awarded just for participating which makes it easy to get a good grade. No half points on exams is so irritating.
Though the flipped learning style is terrible, Angela Crane herself is an excellent professor. She explains things clearly and is always willing to help if you need.
she is good. the course is very accommodating to first years and she knows its a big jump from highschool. I think the material itself is quite tricky, but she does a good job of explaining it. lots of ways to get other marks besides exams. exams are hard tho cuz no half points... make sure you do good on labs and participantion points
Dr. Crane's lectures were amazing for 1012 because (opposed to 1011) she did examples in lectures that corresponded to the pre-class videos for that day. She thoroughly explains things and exams were fair considering they were chosen from practice problems. You can tell she wants everyone to understand everything! Amazing.
awful
This was the bane of my existence I taught myself everything due to the flipped lecture style. You pay 1300$ to basically watch lectures that are older than the school itself. Not sure how we were ever expected to do well on absolutely absurd tests that were 60 questions and gave us 30 minutes to complete this made me switch majors from bio to kin.
She does not care about students at all. Bubble sheet format for tests are unfair. Just awful in general.
Xp system is super complicated for no reason and feels very outdated. Not a great teacher to top it off, seems like she takes any time a person who asks a question or talks during her class as a personal attack.
Angela Crane is a horrible prof, she does not teach anything in class and expects you to learn it from videos before class. But don't email her questions as her work-life balance is very important to her and she will not answer if it is not during her work hours, which is ironic considering she makes her students do so much out of class work.
Terrible professor, has questions online that you need to complete before she actually teaches you how to do them in class.
Not quite sure what's up with the dislike for Crane, I personally thought she was pretty good. The CAPA pre-class questions are pretty annoying, I will admit, but you can brute force half of them. Besides, you don't even have to do remotely all of them. I had to do a decent amount of self learning, but she was always there to help in lecture.
She provides an infinite number of resources and opportunities to practice and learn. She understands that there are multiple styles of learning and provides materials for each. She thoroughly explains all topics and ensures everyone knows where to go for help. She responds quickly to emails and truly cares about her students.
Angela Crane was a professor I felted mastered the teaching structure of first year chemistry. I personally enjoy the backwards learning used in this course. There were many chances to get extra credit, including the option to retake all the midterms. The variety of practice problems was amazing.
By far the worst professor I've had so far. Only goes over practice problems in class and assumes you know theory on par with her when she never talks about in class. Capa is a joke, she gets answers wrong constantly, and if emailed about it will tell you it's your fault. I used to enjoy chemistry, but because of her I am totally turned off of it
This class has so much potential but it's set up is so inefficiently. We pay thousands of dollars for chemists with PhDs to spend the entirety of every single lecture doing practice problems, while we have to learn the concepts ourselves from prerecorded videos that are as old as most students, not to mention CAPA which surely is older and sucks.
Angela should take a different approach when designing a course because this course is horribly designed. The lectures don't help at all, you're just better off watching the 9-20 pre-class videos that are assigned to understand the concept. There's a lot of work that is mandatory to do for this course and it's very exhausting.
Her lecture designs are useless. She is very rude when trying to communicate. It is expected you learn the material before class for "XP points". They only amount to 5% but if you don't do them, you will be lost in the lecture. Only positive note is her grading scheme. There is an exam retake if you aren't happy with your grades which is nice.
Expects you to learn everything before lectures by watching terrible videos. She ends up not even teaching you during the class.
Although I dislike the reverse lecture system she uses where you learn contents before class, Dr Crane is passionate about what she does. There are no surprises on exams from what I've seen and you can retake however many you want at the end of the term if you mess up. Plus, she makes the lectures available on teams, and posts the recordings later.
Not a fan of the reverse learning idea - watch several videos prior to class then reinforce the material in class. I found it made it difficult to manage the workload for other courses sometimes. Nothing good or bad to really say about her since you do 90% of the learning on your own. Lab staff was great, clutch grading scheme.
Had to drop the class because I couldn't handle how horrible the reverse teaching "strategy" was. Taking chem again next year with a new prof.
worst class ive ever taken in my life
Great lectures, lots of prep is required
As a first-year engineering student, Dr. Crane was a war crime of a professor. The backward learning the course is based on requires you to spend at least 3 hours for every... single... lecture. She requires you to answer test-like questions for "Pre-Class questions" BEFORE learning the topic, and locks the slides before class so you can't learn.
Chemistry was the most time-consuming class in my first semester of ENG. Chem requires lots of prep time to get anything valuable from the lectures. Before each class, you are expected to answer the pre-class questions and watch the pre-class videos bc Dr. Crane will go over examples and not explain the theory in-depth.
I think Angela Crane has a system that works very well for first year chemistry at Dalhousie. She has many ways of assessments that allow for a distributed mark not solely based on Exams. Enjoyed her class a lot would take again.
Angela Crane is perhaps the worst chemistry professor on the face of the Earth. If you have her I'm sorry. I used to love chemistry but if I never want to step foot into a chemistry class again after this abomination of a course.
Dr. Crane is by far the best professor at Dalhousie. Her course preparation is unparallel. Her lectures are clear, and provides in-class time for students to try problems. She also has TAs on hand during lectures to assist with student questions. Her marking scheme is extremely fair and encouraging.
Dr Crane is actually a good professor but the way she sets up her class just ruined chemistry for me
Get ready to work harder in this course than any of your other courses this semester, but if you're whiling to put in the work, you WILL see results! The great thing is there are no surprises in this course: exams are what you would be expecting based on the homework. Long story short: if you're whiling to do the work, it's a pretty easy A
If you plan to take this course. Don't. Do online somewhere else but here, you'll be far more successful there.
Dr. Crane was a good professor, however the flipped classroom style of lectures means a heavy work load. If you know chemistry you dont need to do the textbook readings but the pre-class questions are required for the XP grading system.
Dr. Crane is really energetic and friendly, she goes very in depth with her lectures and explains things very well. I found her format of exams to be very difficult, (you are graded on the answer, not the process) and CAPA points are dastardly, but the other components of the course can save your mark.
Overall a good experience, the example problems from the lectures along with the CAPA assignments really helped reinforce the material from the readings and there was tons of support outside of class. First year chem is a lot of work but Dr Crane and the other staff members are very helpful and supportive.
Lots of pre lecture homework,if your like me you can do none of it and still finish with an A- just by doing well on tests.Lectures are very engaging as she is very enthusiastic about all the subject matter.Lets you to redo any test you like and you will keep the highest grades you get.Tests are graded purely off answers which is brutal.
Dr. Crane's lectures were amazing however the xp system is brutal. good luck with the 4 exams you will have to do; having said that they are very easy if you study.
Dr. Crane makes learning hard topics in first year chemistry very simple. The pre class work never took me more than an hour at most, and led me to having a better understanding of the concepts during class, where she goes through valuable examples. If you find this course too difficult it is not Dr. Crane's fault, as you are set up for success.
Dr. Crane's flipped classroom style can be challenging, but the CAPA assignments and resources like Unstuckstudy really help reinforce the material. Worth the effort if you stay engaged.
Took this class first year and I lost 8% for things that were beyond my control and went from a B+ to a C+, didn't love that. Great lectures though.
hated the way the course was structured
Angela Crane is absolutely amazing. Her lectures are engaging and she goes over examples that are very helpful for the tests. Yes, there is a lot of homework with the flipped style classroom, however you will succeed if you put in the effort to do so. There are so many resources and extra bonuses worked into the syllabus as well.
The whole inverted classroom or whatever it was called did not really work for me. Dr Crane also was deafening with her microphone. The class was easy
Course is not too difficult, lots of assignments/quizzes but they help boost your grade! Wasn't a fan of the lecture style, make sure you study lots on your own time
Chem 1010 is… bearable. However, you don't get a lot of support from Angela, if thats something you rely on. The whole inverted-classroom setup sucks if your learning style isn't basically teaching yourself. The lectures are short and feel rushed, and there's a lot of homework to stay on top of. The labs are easy, though!
Angela Crane is very good at explaining tough concepts. She made the early morning chem classes worth waking up for. The structure of the class allows each grade to mean very little. Anyone after second year knows that they very well could make the class simply two exams worth 40+ percent. Be grateful for the lenient structure of first year.
