Her tests were hard, she expected too much for one course. Too many papers compacted into a short amount of time.

An excellent professor who has a real passion for what she teaches. Likes to inject variety into her lectures by inviting guest speakers or showing audio-visual materials. She is very clear about what she expects in exams & essays.

to each his/her own I suppose. I love this Prof. mainly because she doesn't stress me out like some profs. After 75 credits, I find she is one of the easiest graders. She's always in a good mood and has a good sense of humor. I like her teaching style.
Easy course in general, but the prof tries her best to confuse you by jumping from one point to another. Exams are average (mult. choice)and classes are ok, she lectures the whole time or puts a movie.

very straigtforward. Course has 2 tests and one 7-page paper. Had to answer 3 questions on each test. She gives the info in her lecture and tells you what will be on the test. She even tells you the page numbers in textbook if she's using it on exams. No prof. can make a course easier than this
this prof was awesome, she tells you what pages of the text book to study,saves you a lot of time when studying and isn't a very hard marker, the only thing is; the exam questions are a little trickey. but overall definately a good prof

Not the best teacher. She didnt have any notes. You can do good just by reading the book and going to the exam which is multiple choice (be careful though she has these tricky questions "none of the above, all of the above, a and c, etc")
You have two midterms (40 mc 2 short essays) and one final research paper (7-10 pages double spaced) on a topic of your choice. Must attend all classes because of the movies she shows. She actually tells you what pages to read for the exams! She also always lets us go 45 minutes early! One downside? The classroom is subzero cold! WTF?
so embarrassing. she should not be teaching this course, period. the lectures are basically: girls are like this, and boys are like this... but then she marks fairly tough on the exams. I don't know where she expects us to to learn the information. Run Away!
Useless prof and useless class. Presented the issues as completely black and white and wasn't open to discussion. Also says "for example" when things are not remotely examples of anything ALOT! Worst class I've taken at ConU. Easy if you don't want to learn anything. If you know anything about Sociology, stay away.
I liked her. Yes she was dry for lectures,she gave all the pages to study for the exams-they were not easy so really commit to studying!She was very kind when I spoke to her & even went to bat for several of us when we had probs with another teacher without being asked. She cares.She's not energetic,classes late at night though so understandable.
not most energetic but very nice. has a sense of humour that comes out when she can draw on personal experiences. a little unclear on exams but u can always ask her 4 help. often dictates notes so be prepared to write. not overly hard as long as u read ALL the chps, study off overheads n take down notes 4 the movies. wouldnt mind takin her again :)

This teacher is burnt out period. She has been teaching too long and has lost whatever passion she once had. It has made her uninteresting, unhelpful, and she gives off the impression that she would rather be somewhere else. It always seems like she is being bothered. Not the hardest class, but avoid if interested in the subject.
She gives off this unorganized, absent-minded, mad professor vibe although she is quite nice. Extremely tough marker considering the imprecision of her notes. Yes, there are interesting movies but what's the point if she marks impossibly tough. Never again, I should have listened to others that commented here.
As with the other comments..I have to agree. She has lost her "spark" for the topic. She does seem to not want to be there..or at the very least, absent minded. I took her a few years ago and that class was what got me interested in sociology but she pales in comparisson to how she once was. Not a bad person but she definitly does not care any more
Very nice lady, easy class, gives you specific page numbers to study for the exams. 2 exams and a book report, not too hard. She's there if you need her help. Took her twice, loved it. Easy night class.
She is the most boring teacher I have ever had, period. The class is fairly easy if you can actually manage to stay awake and take notes. But she should have retired a long time ago. Try to avoid.
Completely lost all passion for teaching! He multiple choice is so easy it's a joke but watch out for essay she marks without any sort of system. Pulls facts of a of mid-air. Once argued that Malcolm X was an atheist version of martin luther king jr! Never again! Avoid her at all costs, she doesnt have much time left teaching anyways
Excellent Prof! She knows her stuff! I don't know what all the others are saying! She tells you exactly what to study for on the exam, and is very helpful!!! Excellent-kick-ass proff. You other students need to grow up and take responsibility for blowing your own grade!!! Grow up, you're suppose to be adults not children!!!!!
She's very, very boring. Every once in a while there's a small glimmer of possible life in her, though this is quite rare. She can be quite rude and unaccommodating. She does a great job at turning an exciting subject into something much less.
She turned a class I was the most excited about to one I absolutely dreaded going to. She refuses to use technology, meaning there is not extra help from class slides on line, and often seems agitated and annoyed when you email a question. She also jumps from one topic to a completely different one...making your notes incoherent.
Interesting class with interesting material, really opens your eyes. The professor is clearly well versed in the subject and offers a great deal to the course. Unfortunately, the exams are extremely difficult, and the papers are marked very arbitrarily based only on mentions of certain words and not at all on anything else.
Although she knows the material, she jumps from one point to the next, then back to the original point, making it extremely annoying to take notes. Her tests often have questions that don't come from notes, textbook, or extra readings.

This teacher is wonderful. The people who commented below me for soci 262 are exagerated and clearly didn't do well. All she asks is that you attend class, take notes and do the readings, like any other professor would. I'm extremely lazy and breezed through with an excellent mark. Take her if you can, she's great.
Horrible teacher. Does not care about the success of her students. Simply does her job because she has to. A student once asked her for a piece of information. She refused. Her reason? "Well, I'm the teacher, so." and then continued on with her class.
The material could be interesting. But she doesn't manage to make it interesting lots of long lectures doesn't accept anything by internet EVER. Very little if no exam preperation doesn't really seem to care if students fail or pass went to her office never managed to get any clear help juste kinda says okay to everything...

She's a decently nice teacher, but marks come scarce. Avoid taking her if you don't have hours and hours to study class notes and the book word for word.
She rocks my world every class. You can tell that she loves talking about her subject. She uses examples from her own life. She's freakin hilarious and yes her exams are hard but she got me interested enough in the subject that i dont even mind studying. She's awesome bottom line
HARD TESTS
If you go to class you wont get lower than a B+. There is a lot of material which may be why some find it unclear what she wants but study all your notes and you'll do great. She doesn't post anything online which I actually prefered because it forces you to go and pay attention in class. Overall a great class to take.
Very interesting topic turns extremely boring. Does not go into the issues just briefly alludes to them. Pretty boring class, hard exams (literally memorize every note you take). I am a very good student and find it hard to well in this class. Her views seem outdated and she is not approachable
Seriously? I'm not sure what classes that those of you who say her courses and exams are hard because I'd like to take them for my GPA. She's a cute little brit, has lots of field experience, repetitive, bit dreary but not too bad.
Interesting material however she tests almost exclusively out of the textbook. First exam had essay question,the rest were tough multiple choice and TF questions that didn't test our understanding but instead memorization ability. Whole mark basically based on MC question exams that were purposely confusing. Too lazy to mark an essay or essay exam?
I had a really bad experience with this professor. She knows her subject but the evaluations are mostly only on the lesson provided in the book. Her attitude shocked me also, I had never dealt with such an unpleasant person/prof before.
Thought I'd come out of this class with an A- at least but nope. She is dull, often loses track of what/where her lectures leave off and has no defined marking criteria. very disappointing :/ The odd time she did crack a joke and made us laugh however. Those were the rare instances some semblance of character came out. Has she retired yet?

Worst teacher I've had so far in university, her lectures are confusing and not clear. She is a very hard marker and her exams barely coincide with her notes. I would stay away from this teacher if you hope to get a good mark.
This is my 3rd and very LAST time taking her class, it's a lot of studying for the two exams that she gives and she is not an easy grader either. You're lucky if you get more than a C in her class. She does not seem to like questions being asked in classes or in exams and does not care if you missed class and need the information, that's on you
She does not use any technology, therefore it is important to attend every class. Tests are based 100% on material covered in class and text book information!! SO important to read the text book pages that she will assign prior to tests. She's not an easy marker so elaborate on answers A LOT.
She literally gives out the EXACT pages where she selects her multiple choice questions from. Therefore reading is light if you focus only on the pages she suggests. Also, essay questions are pretty much what she says in lectures, write down what she says word for word... don't question it too much. Her class is legit easy if you do the above.
It's really sad that this person is still qualified to teach in the sociology department . A very outdated perspective on race,gender and sexuality. Students who love sociology and were interested in the material were forced to drop her 263 class, and I've heard the same about her 261 class. The FIRST test in both of those classes are worth 40%,& are impossible to do well on
Very difficult class, she has an attitude most days and her lectures can be very confusing. She is very old school as well, only writes down key words on the chalk bored and speaks quickly... can be hard to take all the information in. She is also a very tough marker and her tests are impossible to ace. would not recommend.
Honestly one of the worst profs I've ever had. Does not even seem like she cares if her students pass of not. She has an attitude and is very unapproachable. I would not recommend. Upsetting because she teaches very interesting subjects.
Not a great prof but this class was super easy. She is kind of outdated but she sometimes lets a discussion go on that shakes things up a bit. Literally have to regurgitate her lectures on the tests, but if you've taken notes & have a good memory you're fine. Barely cracked open the textbook.
I took one of her courses last semester and did poorly on the first half of the course. I came to her for help when I was the only one to blame and she explicitly but politely told me I was being a drag (which is understable) yet she still helped me plan for the exam, told me to keep my head up, and ultimately assisted me in salvaging a C :)
Is very clear and the material in class and what she expects in the exam and paper. Also tells you exactly what to study from your class notes to the textbook. However, she is a tough grader and expects your class notes as answer on the exam.
This teacher is very specific with what she asks for and gives you good guidelines for her criteria. She is traditional but gives good information about the subject she teaches. Note taking is essential for this class.

Multiple choice part of test are directly from the book and she gives the page #s before the tests. As long as you write exactly her take on it you should be fine. Term paper was meh.
The lectures are really boring for such an interesting subject. It really disappointed me cause it could have been so much more interesting if a different teacher was teaching it. Ford is a traditional teacher, don't expect passionate discussions about controversial topics. She is not a remarkable prof. but she is good., her lectures are clear and easy to follow. She seems tough an unapproachable but if she notices you are making an effort she shows how caring she really is. If you take her class seriously you'll do well.
tests require ALOT of studying because she makes you write so much and expects you to know the whole textbook by heart. It's sad because she teaches such an interesting subject but makes it miserable for you. Beware.

To pass you MUST regurgitate her notes and memorize random facts in the text. Dont include info from other classes it will be wrong. If you ask for clarification, shell just tell you to read the text. When 90% of the class fails her exams, its because of our 'learning difficulties'. Heaven forbid you suggest her assessment tool is invalid.

Treats class like ignorant children, worst prof I've had in my 4 years at Concordia. She URGES you not to think for yourself, is looking to fail students, thinks she is infallible (actually told the class that), and refuses to discuss relevant issues. She really thinks her students are garbage and treats you accordingly. Get ready for a bad grade!
Doesn't engage students, doesn't give clear instructions, exams are long & poorly written & doesn't do anything to help you. I didn't do well on her midterm so I went to her office hours for help. She didn't help me and dismissed concerns I had about the exam (I.E not understanding exam questions, being pressed for time, etc). I don't recommend her
Unaccessible out of class, and not personable. Don't bother asking for extra help or any accommodations. Lectures are quite dull, with the exception of the occasional documentary. Almost done with this course and I look forward to never having a class with Prof. Angela Ford-Rosenthal again.
I did surprisingly well in her course. The lectures and documentaries were interesting, but some of the exam questions are tricky. Fortunately, the professor gives out the page numbers from the textbook and other topics on which to focus on for the exam. She was also very helpful with my term paper and she gave me a lot of feedback.

I took a race class and the class is really boring. Her tests look for supper specific Answers using names and dates not ideas and theories, the things that count.
1) Horrible Textbook (Gender & Identity - Key themes and New Directions) 2) Extremely tough grader 3) Incredibly boring class 4) Exams are designed to fail you 5) Even if you study hard and go to every class you will not get an A, lucky if you get a B 6) Very unapproachable 7) Tells students they are not special on first day of class
NOT SPECIFIC at all. Class concepts easy to understand and interesting, but such A TOUGH GRADER for an intro 200 level class. You lose points if you don't write WORD BY WORD the way she explained in class. No slides or moodle notes. writes a random word on the board and expects us to understand and catch all contents. Useless class and bad teacher
Super tough grader. Does not give a lot of feedback. Class average on midterm was D! I mean, there's a problem here. She looks for loads of details and it seems like it's never enough. Completely discouraged me.
WORST TEACH EVER. Lost a study guide for the final assignment (50%) she gives 2 or 3 loose sleeves paper for us to keep each class, go figure I lost it, go to her office hours and ask for another. DOES NOT GIVE ME ONE and says to deal with it. HORRIBLE TEACHER BE WARE.
I didn't enjoy her class nor her teaching style. She doesn't use PowerPoints or Moodle so be prepared to take really good notes and do a lot of reading. Her exams and papers are a pain and I wouldn't recommend her class to anyone. AVOID.

Criteria for the long answer questions didn't exist; seemed like it was randomly graded. Long answer questions only on one exam. Rest are multiple choice, also difficult. I like a challenge, I attend class to learn, but her exams were like trivia questions rather than ones that assess your understanding. READ the chapters, take notes, dont attend.
Her classes have amazing environments for people who want to learn. I should mention that she uses the best movies in her classes.
She clearly knows her stuff, but her teaching is definitely questionable. Her exams can be very hard even if you study for it using the pages she gave in advance, questions are confusing and more. I feel like she's been doing this for too long and now is desensitized to student's needs. I am not taking a class I really wanted because it's hers.

Prof Rosenthal is great! Doesn't use online tools, but she'll nicely answer questions in class or during office hours. The readings can be quite long, but we only need them for the exams and our own understanding of what is seen in class. You need to be present to class for the notes and study well for the exams. Not as bad as other say for sure
Some of you just shouldn't be in university if you think this prof is a bad prof. I've had bad profs and she is one of my favourites at Concordia. If I could take every one of her classes I would do so happily. If you dont want to work for a good grade, drop out of University and go do something easier, or maybe pick a program you actually like.
She seems like someone who is hard to approach until you actually approach her. Once you do she will help you with anything you need and seems to have a real vested interest in her students success, at least the ones who care to do the work. Avoid if you plan on skipping half your classes and then complaining about your bad grade.
This was one of the hardest classes to follow along with. The class material is interesting however, she doesnt fully explain ideas. She writes things on the board that are barely legible explains it for 1 minute and thinks we grasp a concept. She never really stops for peoples questions or comments. Do not take her class
Professor Ford-Rosenthal may look tough, but she is actually kind and approachable. She helped me with my paper and gave me some ideas on how to improve my essay. Just show her that you are willing to work and study hard and you will be rewarded at the end.
If you can avoid this teacher, do it. Took is as an elective and regret it. It was one of the hardest-most unfair class I have ever attended in my university years. If you have no choice to take her, make sure you memorize the chapters by heart for the exam and DO NOT MISS CLASS, class notes are mandatory for exam
I dont know whats wrong with the students rating this prof badly. All she really wants is for her students to show the slightest bit of interest and effort in her class. I easily got an A by... trying a little bit lol. Grow up and stop expecting to be babied by your profs. She was very helpful to me all semester long and very approachable.
Took this as a 6.5 week summer course. She's a perfectly fine professor, just relies a lot on memorization for the tests. If you memorize important terms and names and what she puts on the Powerpoints in class you'll be fine for the exams. Can be strict about attendance as she doesn't put slides on Moodle. Overall, nice enough teacher!
quite trans exclusionary in her main discussions on gender. won't upload slides to Moodle, so be sure not to miss her already scattered lecture. asks very random questions on the exams, memorize names of theorists & read thoroughly if you have to take her class. also tests heavily on masculinist studies/mens issues... tolerable but not ideal!
She is an extremely hard grader. The exam questions are literally the most irrelevant points from the chapter. Took this as an elective and I regret not dropping it. Avoid if you can.
She does not post any lecture notes or powerpoints online. If you do not attend the classes you will fail your exams. This is unfair considering that some people who have jobs or other family matters might not be able to attend a 7 am class. She is not flexible at all and will not change dates of assignments even during the COVID-19 pandemic!!
If you want to be bored to tears this is the class for you. She expects your papers to parrot her lectures exactly & does not want you to have opinions or lived experience reflected in your work. Lectures are disjointed & non-informative. Invites students to email her to discuss work after lectures but will accuse you of skipping if you dont get As
I had her for 2 classes (SOCI 263, 262) and honestly, I aced both... I didn't go to any of the live lectures, all I did was watch the recorded lectures, take notes and then answer the questions on the exam. She's also really understanding and accommodating, i don't understand why she has such bad reviews
A lot of people don't like her which I can see by the readings and other students in my class but I've taken her twice and loved both times. She's really nice and to me its a really easy class. She doesn't give weekly readings just the textbook which you don't actually need other than for the essays and some exam questions.
She's an amazing teacher. Yes her lectures can be a bit boring because there's a lot of statistics but it's still interesting. She's very passionate about her subject. She can seem tough but she's just very serious about her class and she's a sweet person. If you do the work (take notes, do the readings and watch the movies) you'll do just fine!!
Talks nonstop, with a heavy accent and gives no break. Papers ( x3) were the only form of evaluation. The last paperfinal exam min. 14 pages. One good thing, the class was synchronous zoom/online, on Saturdays. The material was interesting and relevant to current issues. The teacher's opinions were objective and non-biased.
Ford-Rosenthal's Youth Crime Class was hard because she taught her lectures as if she were reading from a paper in front of her. Her tone is monotonous, and a certain lack of organization makes it hard to grasp the important information. She is disorganized and goes from one subject to another, jumping back and forward between chapters.
Professor Rosenthal is a great professor. Her teaching style is based on old-fashioned memorization. She gave two midterms and told us everything in the midterm beforehand; all you had to do was learn the material. I went to her office hours for the term paper, and she was happy to help. She is a tough grader, but putting in the work is worth it.
Super nice prof and will definitely help you if you reach out privately, but she's a super hard grader. On tests she is very specific about things barely covered in class and you basically have to memorize the entire textbook
prof. Rosenthal was alright. Her lectures were not super interesting and were kind of just a regurgitation of the textbook, which honestly im fine with if she added onto it more or just made it more engaging. A lot of her examples when explaining stuff were super anecdotal, and she was unable to answer a lot of questions.
I don't recommend this professor. Her lectures were mostly boring and quite slow, except for a few. I skipped a few classes and did fine, so I don't think attendance is mandatory. The good thing is that the tests were quite easy, you can get a good grade without studying too much, but the essay was a pain, although I think she grades fairly well.

Long boring lectures, cannot take criticism and blames everyone for failing her impossible exams. Only gives 3 evaluations, vague final essay instructions and very specific questions in tests that have to do with random facts from the textbook where she assigns almost 100 pages and a few films. Take note of everything she says in class.
If I knew before I wouln't take it. She asked to read the book while in class it was a different subject. At the exam she asked for specific questions on both materials which was inconsistant. No surprise everybody failed, and she blame it on the students but after she did improve and went a little easier on us. Although, I would avoid the class.
1st week we only did the course outline. 2nd week the professor was sick, class was cancelled. 3rd week was the student strike against tuition hikes and she still held a class. 4th class we had to learn everything for the following week for the midterm exam. avoid this class unless you prefer to teach yourself & like memorization.
Vice president of her union, and yet insisted on crossing a picket line when her students were on strike. A sad state for the workers she supposedly represents. The professors at Concordia are already being faced with austerity and are losing positions due to the tuition hikes. Also I had her for a SOCI class a while ago and it was pretty bad.
I think its a shame that courses that are, in my opinion, vital to the everchanging society we live in are given this lack of care and engagement by the professor. Sociology course with no group projects,no class wide discussion, no seminars. Can confidently say this professor did not teach a single thing. Everyone in class was self-taught.

Im a bit surprised by the other ratings as honestly she was a decent prof with very fair assignments. Was she the most enthusiastic professor ever? No. Was there much material that you had to put in the work to memorize?Yes. But she gives you word for word what will be on the exams, some answers straight from the textbook not many would do this!!
Worst professors at Concordia. She's unapproachable, rude and is disinterested in the subject she's teaching. Unfortunately, it feels like age may have taken a toll on her ability to engage with the material and the students. It's disappointing to see a course with so much potential being diminished by such a lackluster and unmotivated instructor.
Tough grader, but study hard and you'll do well. Lectures can be long and boring, but taking detailed notes and using unstuck AI for prep helps. Exams are challenging, so don't slack on the textbook readings. Overall, a demanding class, but manageable if you put in the effort.
She was a social problem in itself. If u wanna learn about social problem just go to the library and read the book ... DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. She did not let me take my final nor did she let me turn in my final paper, even after she had let other students take it after the deadline. Many students have complained about her ... just ask the chair...
This professor seems not all there when it comes to teaching and rationality. She is rude to students, has outdated views on aspects of gender, and sends emails in which she rambles on without the use of punctuation. Not a heavy course load, however in exams she expects students to remember vague unrelated facts from random sections of the textbook
Deviates completely from the textbook, sends incoherent emails, doesn't answer questions, provides no feedback for neither the final paper and final exam (not even the grading rubric). You just see your midterm grade and final grade. My grade dropped to a B from an A+. When I asked her if I could review, she sent a long paragraph saying no.
This class was at 7:15 am twice a week, need I say more. If you wanted feedback on your final essay you had to give her a stamped envelop for her to mail it to you, this is not the dark ages. Her views are intense but extremely hypocritical. She loves to call out students and so clearly does not care for the welfare of her class. Painful class tbh.
It was the worst Prof. I have ever taken. If you have her, DROP THE CLASS or RIP your GPA. She makes concepts harder than needed and is very harsh when you ask questions regarding your grades. She was very condescending and seemed miserable in each class. DO NOT TAKE HER! She made me question my degree.
She teaches so many things and tries to push everything in one class without properly explaining the terms. She puts very specific things in the exam like we're magicians or have been studying this for years and expects us to know. Also she just reads her notes her classes are very boring unfortunately.
I dropped this class and it was the best thing I ever did for myself. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Most of the material I knew already because I have an interest in the subject, and her lectures were ridiculously long, boring and all over the place. Everyone failed exams and she blamed us lol. Not clear and is RUDE. Save yourself now.
The material is interesting but quite dense and since she is not the kind of instructor who sparks interesting conversations or debates, the lectures are just long and boring. Granted, she does give clear instructions on how you can succeed in her course but what you really need is will power because this class drains you mentally and physically
Archaic style of teaching. She goes on a tangent on each class and you need to note down everything she says. If you don't replicate what she says in the examinations, you won't get a good grade. The worst thing is that she makes the subject she teaches uninteresting.
Her instructions on paper are pretty clear although she often contradicts herself while speaking about them. You don't even really need to attend the classes as long as you memorize the textbook and watch the films. I would have had better luck finding a job on Indeed with the time block of her class.
she only let us know how much we got out 40% of the class, idk what I got for the remaining 60% of my grade and gave me the grade FNS. she never left feedback for us, she lectured us on material that was NOT on the textbook and our only two exams (no tests or quizzes) were based on the textbook which she was very unclear about. save urself
Boring lectures that typically go until the end of class time. She rambles a lot and she repeats herself a lot. She honestly seemed like a sweet person, but I just think age has affected her and she shouldn't be teaching anymore. The tests were solely based off of the textbook, so make sure you read it. She also makes us watch good documentaries.
This teacher would ramble for 3 hours and some classes not even give us a break, there were no slides or any written document that we could follow. She didn't give us any group or any class discussions. She was very condescending when it came to us not getting good grades. She wouldn't welcome questions and would brush them off. She should retire.
Very lecture-heavy, 3 hours of talking and not very interactive with the class. Clear instructions and grading criteria but does not post ANY grades online, must see her or be in class to receive the grade. Kind teacher and willing to help, but would not take again.
Her lectures could benefit from keeping time to spark interesting conversations. The entire lecture is her reading notes, which makes it hard to stay engaged. The answers to her tests are verbatim from the textbook, if you read the book and follow her guidelines for the final essay you can do fairly well for minimal effort. Boring but easy elective
she is of a certain age and she only gives us her bullet points, hard to follow the reasoning and content sometimes - no slides and heavy readings- midterm was a MCQ graded extremely harsh and the questions were not tackled in class at all final was a 7 page paper (for a 200 level) and on a topic non-related to lectures either
Professor Rosenthal engages in meaningful discussions and makes the learning experience engaging. Her lectures are super knowledgable and she's always ready to help you understand a topic and answer your questions.
Overall she's an ok professor. It's relatively easy to pass her class but hard to ace it. She doesn't cover everything in her lectures you do need to read. Her exams are fair and she does give big hints before the exam but her papers are long and tedious with no clear grading scheme.
