She has high standards, but will read your paper before you turn it in for grading. Not a bad professor at all. I've heard that there could be worse.

She really cares about helping each student improve their writing style and will spend individual time helping them. However, I was bothered by the tangents she would go off on in class, especially sexual tangents.

She's so much fun!! I had no clue what to expect going into the class, but my interest in the topics we discussed definitely increased over the year. Professor Hofstetter is definitely not afraid to tell you what she thinks, and often expresses liberal opinions. Still, she encourages students to dicuss their own opinions & ideas. Great prof!!

I was a little concerned when I first started her class because she seemed a little crazy, but as I got to know her, she was actually really cool. When I hadn't finished a paper, she gave me an extension, no questions asked. Her class discussion is really fun, too. One day we had a whole conversation about Dave Chappelle. She's great! :)

The class is great, the books are awesome. Class participation is a big part of the grade. Definitely take this class.

Great professor. shes a bit crazy and loves to joke about sex, but shes great at discussions and helping you with papers. just do the reading and write over the top essays and shell love you. plus she gives extensions and pretty much hands you topics and thesises for your papers. read, write good papers, adn participate and youll get an easy A

I loved this class. She knows that the subject matter (Jane Austen) may not be intresting to everyone, but she makes it so. She encourgaes discussion from all perspectives; you can disagree as much as you want, she just wants you to discuss. She has her favorites, but it isn't a bug problem , and she is very helpful with papers. She's very friendly

I agree w/ the previous comments, she is crazy...but that's what makes the class so fun. She does talk about sex a lot and is infatuated with Jane Austen and horses. She is very helpful on the papers you have to write. Hardly ever aswers emails, so better to meet with her in person. Class wasn't hard, just a lot of class participation.

Professor Hofstette has been my favorite teacher.It was the funnest most interseting class all year.Guys be warned that it is a very women oriented class which makes for great and hysterical conversations with Hofstetter and the rest of the females.Work is intersting but books are terrible to read especially middlemarch

My favorite teacher so far. The class is a woman's class, but it was kind of fun being one of the few guys. Very open to opinions of all kinds and makes the class very enjoyable. Really helped me understand all of the material we read although I complained constantly about it. Strongly recommend taking any class you can with her!

She really knows her stuff. I had her a few years ago and the reading isn't always exciting but the conversations are great fun. Do the work and you'll be fine in her class.

Very lively with a great teacher personality. She is a very generous grader, at least for me. She expects you to show up to class and participate in the lectures and discussions. She's very attentive to the class and likes to hear your input. She's really fun and has great insight on the reading materials. She loves her job.

She is a good teacher that really connects with you. You also have to be engaged in conversation over the section of reading, so you have the chance to tell everyone your thoughts on the particular section.

I had Dr. Hofstettor for an FYS called Blood Will Tell about vampires, gangster, and horses (read Seabiscuit). It was engaging and fun. She swears and is hysterically genuine and down to earth. No pressure to participate. Nice grader and accommodates the syllabus every week because she talks and talks. Cutest professor! Loved it! Received an A.

FYS class with most reading. A lot of class discussion. On occasion in class quizzes with notes! READ THE BOOKS and you will do just fine. Very approachable & funny. Very knowledgeable and loves insightful comments (relate to real life or other books) and when people disagree with others, as long as you have support of course!

She's a super sweet teacher. I thought the class was extremely easy. You don't even really have to read the books....even though you should. :) We only wrote about 5 or 6 essays throughout the entire year and none of them had to be over 7 pages. She's also very lenient and let's you choose your own essay topics, which makes it easier to write.

I was randomly placed in Dr. Hofstetter's FYS and it couldn't have worked out any better. Dr. H is the best professor I've had so far. She makes long novels come alive, formal papers casual, and silent films nail-biters. Most of the class consists of reading or watching a film then discussing your perspective in class. Highly recommend.

My favorite professor at Butler. Very liberal and open minded, she loves when people disagree with her and tries to get debates started in class which keeps things interesting. She assigns a lot of readings but as long as you skim or spark note them and annotate then participate in class you will get an A. Participation is most important!

I never expected to enjoy FYS but it ended up being my favorite class. She gives you a lot of reading and she will make you participate so do the reading or skim/sparknote. She is a fairly easy grader and you'll do well on essays as long as you put effort into them and turn them in on time. Show up and do what you're supposed to and you'll get an A

Angela is probably one of the best honors professors in the entire program. She picks extremely interesting topics to teach on gives her students the opportunity to really speak their minds on the subject matter. She assigns a lot of reading but it's nothing an honors student can't handle (sparknotes is key). Best FYS available bar none.

Hey Ang!! I hope you're reading this. Dr. Hofstetter was hands down my favorite human being that I have ever came into contact with. She takes a personal interest in every single person that she meets. She has inspired me in so many ways and is a huge role model in my life. She is amazing and extremely caring. Respect her and she will respect you.

She's seriously one of the sweetest ladies I've ever met. She's very passionate about what she teaches, and she tries to make things fun. There is a lot of reading in this class, but it's fine for an honors course. She will let you rewrite your essays if you want a better grade, and she is very caring.

The class does contain a lot of writing, but in my opinion it is not that bad due to how wonderful the class is. If you have a chance to take a class taught by Hofstetter, do it. I would take anything Dr. Hofstetter teaches. I have had her for FYS and a TI class, and she is truly an incredible professor, but even more than that she cares SO much about her students and their lives and successes. She is so easy to ask questions to and contact outside of class, I don't know how you couldn't do well in this class!! TAKE HER!

Dr. Hofstetter is one of my favorite teachers ever and I haven't even finished a whole semester with her. If you have the chance, take her class. She makes poetry and writing so much more accessible and easy to understand, making it easy to get a lot out of the class. You will learn a lot about English but even more about life. Take this professor if you get the chance! Had her all year for FYS and she is hands down one of my favorites. You do read and write a lot, there are other FYS classes that don't have as much work. But, it is worth it because she is amazing and so passionate. She wants you to well as long as you put in the effort, you will get a good grade.

One of the nicest professors at Butler, she is constantly trying to make everyone feel included and actively learns students' likes to better tailor the class to them. Cannot recommend her enough! If you don't like reading you might struggle at first, but it is genuinely worth it for the amazing discussions and class atmosphere.

Dr. Hofstetter is a good choice for FYS. The class is heavily conversation-based, so she'll call on you occasionally if you're not a regular participant. She grades papers fairly and rather easily, and paper prompts are very broad and allow you to write about really whatever relates to the class material, which is really nice. Would recommend.

I had Dr. Hofstetter for HN 110 & 111. She is caring, funny, and passionate about the material that my classmates and I were genuinely excited to go to class. The texts are interesting and the class is discussion-based, so we had many stimulating conversations. Her projects are really lenient, so it's easy to pick something you're passionate about!

The numbers speak for themselves, lots of readings, but the whole class is discussions. She gives 100% on every paper if you simply turn them in with some thought. Class was lowkey stressful when you didn't read though cause she would call you out and ask specific questions about chapters, so just prepare one or two things to say.

Initially, I was worried about how the classes would go but Dr. Hofstetter gave me confidence and actually had me looking forward to attending class to discuss readings. I highly recommend taking her if at all possible.

Dr. Hofstetter is an amazing person and lecturer. She assigns quite a bit of reading, but the class is usually just discussions of what was read. I would say it would be hard to fail the class or even to not get an A. She tends to get off topic a little bit, but it is usually about something interesting or something funny.

Professor Hofstetter is an incredible instructor who truly cares about her students and gets to know each of them. The readings were thought-provoking, and the discussions that followed were engaging and entertaining. The class was structured around reading beforehand and discussing it next class, sometimes off topic, but she's hilarious.
