Teaches straight from the book, (Wade) so that helps for studying and clarifying outside of lecture. Holds a lot of office hours and Q&A sessions before tests. However, she does not hand out practice tests. Get these from Destephano's website. Grading is tough, but fair. She will hand out F's. Only 50% of class will get A through B-.
Very concise. Explains theory in a way where its easy to apply it. Pleasant. SPEAKS ENGLISH
Great Prof. All the tests were not difficult except the Final (Don't underestimate it though the exams were easy). Highly recommended
Very competent instructor with a strong knowledge of the material, but not particularly illuminating. Pretty much everything covered in lecture came straight out of the textbook. Tests were fair and indicative of how well the student had mastered the course materials. Overall, a good experience.
I enjoyed this professor a lot. She makes the basics very clear to understand so you can use the book to build off of the foundation she has laid. I highly recommend attending lecture and doing the suggested problems in the book. Do that and you and guaranteed to succeed in her class.
She is very good at explaining all the concepts in a clear way. We switched books so the practice exams available don't work as we aren't following the same order of materials. Gives easier examples in class so a complete surprise when exam has really difficult problems that we didn't cover. Book shows products, not how it got there.
She is very nice, approachable, and easy to understand. Attending her lectures is very helpful, though it is also helpful to attend some of the ChemFoundations sessions. This is a very difficult class, and even though she is clear during lecture the tests are very hard and require a lot of memorizing.
She's a great teacher, she's very good at explaining concepts in a clear manner. Her teaching style is very straightforward. Print out the slides or take notes directly in your textbook as she follows the book very closely in lecture. Tests are a bit difficult, but do all the homework questions and practice exams and you'll be fine.
A good lecturer. Tests are difficult (it is organic chem) but my main complaint is always running out of time on every test. I shouldn't have to scramble to finish, losing lots of points, and I move along at a good pace. This knocks an otherwise great prof down a notch. Test graders aren't very good either, knocking her down yet another notch.
Very clear in her teaching and stays strictly to the book. Print out her slides. If you put in the time and do the practice problems assigned, you WILL get an A in this class. She's very nice and approachable. Go to office hours with any specific questions and she's more than willing to help. Definitely one of my favorite professors so far.
Good lecturer. But her tests are pretty hard. This course require a lot of work outside the classroom. I did almost every book problems to keep my midterms above 90. Though stressed, I am learning a lot from her.
She is very snarky. Not easy to approach and ends up shoving information down your throat before you can even begin to comprehend. This is not an easy course anyways, but she does NOT help... at all.
I think Perkins is a very good professor. She goes along with the book, and breaks things down to its barebones, which is quite helpful. I highly recommend reading the assigned sections before lecture. I felt like having a general knowledge of what we were about to talk about in class helped things click a lot better for me. Very good professor.
Professor Perkins is great. She is extremely helpful and very willing to answer questions in person and via email. This is my second time taking the course and she's a much better professor then my first one. O-Chem is a lot of work and the class covers a lot of material so you can't fall behind.
Terrible. Made mistakes in lecture and passed out reaction and mechanism handouts with mistakes. Overly difficult even for ochem. Never can remember what day it is. Avoid.
Angela put powerpoint notes up on Moodle that you could print and takes notes off of in lecture. She sticks to the material on her powerpoint so if you miss lecture (don't recommend it!) you can catch back up through the powerpoint. The exams are hard, but if you review the past exams and answer keys she posts, you should be fine.Ochem takes work!
Awesome Professor. She uses powerpoints that have the smae information as the textbook which made me wary but! she goes through each reaction completely and explains everything super well. Organic Chemistry is VERY difficult but Angela understands that. The exams are hard because the material is hard not because she wants people to fail. Take her!
Professor Perkins is a fantastic professor. If you do well with professors that take things and strip them down to their simplest forms, then she is great for you. She goes off of the book very closely, which I found to be extremely helpful since the text is so easy to read. She has a commanding personality, but she's super nice. Awesome professor.
Very nice professor--wish I had gone to office hours sooner. She's also very willing to schedule time to meet outside of class; my friends and I took her to lunch. Material wasn't tough, which made the class difficult, since it's graded on distribution. Moral of the story: you can't afford to make dumb mistakes if you want the elusive A.
What is it with this professor and her exams? Ochem is already a tough class, what's the point of making it even harder? Very frustrating when you think you're doing well and get killed in the exam.
OChem is hard but Angela is a great professor. She posts lecture slides which are clear, organized and helpful. Her lectures aren't boring or dull because she actual enjoys teaching. Tests are difficult but it is graded on a curve so that helps a lot. She is willing to help her students understand the material. I would take her class again.
Perkins is one of my favorite professors so far; she was clear, concise, and helpful when asked questions. Her tests weren't the easiest, but o chem is a difficult subject. Her final was very easy and her curve made up for the hard tests.
Great Professor, very helpful, great with emailing back and forth with explanations on problems. Has an honest desire for her students to succeed and if you work hard, she is more then willing to accommodate her schedule to you. Also understands the attention span of students and makes things interesting.
Lectured out of the textbook. Great at explaining things. Do at least some of the recommended problems or else you'll be screwed on the tests, otherwise, they're fine.
Angela was a great professor for ochem. I went into oChem with dread, but she made the material as clear and straight forward as it could be and if you pay attention this oChem can actually be someone easy.
Not a bad professor her exams are fair if you've studied for them and if you generally understand the materials. She seems very interested in her students and cares for your success.
Dr. Perkins is a very good professor, particularly for a tough class like O-Chem. She is very clear about what you need to know in lecture and really makes an effort to make the material as straightforward as possible. The tests are very fair- if you've done the work, you'll be fine. But it is quite a bit of work.
She is an extremely friendly and helpful professor. Yes OChem is hard and so are her exams so a lot of time and effort is required for this course. Don't be afraid to approach her and ask her questions because she is more than happy to help out!
Dr. Perkins is a great professor. She presents the material very clearly. She is also extremely helpful if you are willing to ask questions. Go to office hours or approach her after class. Exams are hard, but fair if you have studied and worked the problems. The key to doing well is working the problems.
Excellent lecturer and very well-organized. O-Chem is a tough class and her exams are not easy, but if you work the recommended problems you should do well.
Her lectures are very helpful and even though they're close to the book, she explains things in a way that makes more sense that the book. Tests aren't bad (for ochem at least) especially if you do the practice problems in the book and the practice test she gives you online.
Angela is a good teacher. She is very clear, and her exams are not very tough as long as you understand the material. Do practice problems and work through the practice exams. I've taken OChem with another prof, and Angela is far more clear.
She speaks English! (major positive) She follows the book but is better at explaining things, always willing to answer questions, and the tests are hard because she likes pulling up obscure facts, but relatively easy to get an A if you pay attention (reading the book helps).
Organized and prepared lecturer. Takes all questions and answers them thoroughly, which is nice and rare for a ~200 person class. Even in a curved class, she provides approximate gradelines throughout the semester, another rarity. Tests were quite fair; didn't test on minor details.
GREAT professor really cares how people do. organized master of her material. energetic this class is fairly easy found it easier than ochem 1 had an A throughout the class without attending lecture or keeping up with the class till about a week before exams. tips: do end of book problems and her practice exams: take final seriously!
Terrible professor. Unclear in class, 9-page exams designed to lower the curve, lied to us about the percentage content on the final. Avoid her at all costs.
Her lectures are very organized and easy to follow! She presents a lot of opportunities for extra help if needed. Exams are really hard, but it's organic chemistry so that's kind of expected.
Terrible professor, cannot lecture, tests are ridiculous even for ochem. Not clear. Avoid like the plague.
Dr. Perkins is a really great professor and explains reactions and mechanisms well. Her tests are pretty fair, and if you do the practice problems assigned in the textbook and her practice exams, you'll do well. I'd highly recommend her for O chem II
If you read the assigned chapters and do all the practice problems then the class an A is easily attainable.
Disorganized lectures. Changed the curve at the end of the class, lowering grades.
Perkins is a very strong woman who can seem intimidating in lecture, but in her office hours, she's super nice. She tried to simplify ochem as much as possible and was a clear lecturer. Ochem is hard enough as it is but she helped make it less daunting.
Dr. Perkins is able to clearly teach mechanisms and concepts of Organic Chemistry. If you take good notes and actually study for her tests, you should be able to pass pretty easily.
Dr. Perkins is a great organic chemistry professor. Her exams are very straight forward. If you do the practice problems in the book and do her practice exams there is no reason you shouldn't be able to get a B. She makes ochem as easy as possible. Lectures are a little confusing hopping between concepts. Overall, strongly recommend her.
Perkins provides zero feedback and zero advice on how to improve skills. Her lectures are nearly impossible to follow. She barely completes one mechanism before moving on to the next. She is intimidating and in the huge lecture hall, no one feels safe to ask questions. I received a D+ from her and a B when I retook the course.
You are taking second semester organic chemistry, expect it to be tough. Perkins seems extremely rude and scary at first, but she is nice if you talk to her in office hours. DO NOT FALL BEHIND. Attend all lectures, go to tutoring, go to office hours, and utilize Chem Foundations.
Ochem is tough and her exams seem diabolical but they are fair. She is open to speaking with those that didn't do as well as thought but she still seems a bit unapproachable. Not a huge curve and was a bit panicked going into a final worth so much weight in the final grade. Clickers make lecture required. Eat, sleep and live with the textbook.
Don't need textbook unless you miss lecture or didn't understand lecture topic. Most straight forward Ochem professor. USE CHEM FOUNDATIONS! Do all the "recommend" chapter problems, practice exam. Make sure you understand the conceptual stuff. Practice, practice, practice mechanisms and synthesis problems. An "A"possible if u do all this.
This class is hard, but Perkins works to make sure that you are understanding the topics. She has very thorough lectures and asks if there are any questions. Her exams are very similar to the practice exams that she gives you on the moodle site. Do not get behind in the textbook reading and do the online homework! Book problems are also helpful.
Obviously, this is a difficult class. Perkins does a really good job of explaining things simply and trying to help you understand why things are the way they are. Lectures are important, so don't skip even though slides are online. The textbook is your life raft so make sure to work the problems and do the readings, do a little work every day.
Dr. Perkins is a very informative lecturer. She draws structures throughout the class and goes through mechanisms. Though she seems unapproachable, she is very helpful if you choose to go to her office hours. Overall, a very great professor. The exams are not difficult if you put in the work to understand the material.
Perkins is a decent lecturer and she seems to really know what she is talking about. You also get to drop one of the four midterms which helps. However, she is very intimidating and often comes across as condescending, which made me nervous about asking her questions. Take advantage of Chem Foundations and the tutor room and you should be okay!
Dr. Perkins is a very educated professor. Although an initial impression may lead you to assume she is pompous and condescending, she is quite helpful, but only if you ask. Office hours are informative and an A/B is very attainable in this course setting. If you are looking to actually learn organic chemistry, she is the professor to have.
Dr. Perkins is very clear in her lectures. She takes the time to go over all questions and explain this the best she can. She also provides a lot of extra help through practice problems, practice exams, office hours and chemhelp. She actually wants her students to learn and understand. There is also a curve and exam drop to help raise your grade.
Professor Perkins is very clear about what will be covered in exams. She genuinely wants everyone to do well in OChem and encourages the use of the resources available. The practice exams are also very helpful. OChem is very difficult to get used to, so make flashcards and study. Try to actually understand the material and not just memorize them.
Made a traditionally difficult class very doable. Lectures are mandatory, as concepts become much better woven together when she explains. Very reasonable with regrades, which are important in OChem. Tests are difficult, but what did you expect, its OChem? Allows drop of one of 4 mid-terms, which is essential.
Perkins made learning ochem easier than I was expecting. She explains concepts clearly and always asks if there are questions before moving on. Connect assignments are insanely quick/easy. Does iClicker questions most days, so lecture is mandatory. Regrades and being able to drop one exam saved my grade in this class.
I mean, it's ochem, so it's going to be hard, but Perkins was an approachable professor, that made the subject interesting and understandable. If you don't read the text book and take lecture notes, don't even bother showing up to the test. Only ochem prof that gives participation points though- so that's nice.
Pretty good lecturer. She does mess up her math on the board pretty frequently, but laughs it off when we correct her. I'm taking her for CHEM1082 so I like her enough. I personally don't read from the textbook, but if you struggle with chem you might want it for this class.
Really enjoyed having her for chemistry! Her tests are more math-based than I would like, but overall she knows chemistry very well and wants you to do well in the course. She always has office hours and resources available. If you put in the effort you should do well!
Dr. Perkins is a solid professor overall. She explains concepts slowly and clearly and is helpful during office hours. Her practice tests and exams are straightforward. She does make some math mistakes on the board, but it's not a big deal. OWL and the practice problems are pretty helpful for preparing for tests. Textbook somewhat optional
She was really nice and approachable but lacked the ability to convey concepts in an understandable manner. Some things she went over really quickly and others she took too long on. Tests make up the majority of the grade and the exams don't match up well with the practice exams. Assigned homework is super important so make sure you understand that
Very, very good at giving lectures, writes on the board instead of flipping through slides to help you understand her thought process. Also very charismatic and funny. Don't skip lectures because you won't understand anything. Homework is typically long but helps your understanding. Tests are pretty hard and cover a lot, so study hard.
Dr. Perkins was a great lecturer. Obviously knows her material, though is often very scatterbrained. She has some mannerisms that might get annoying ("alls we did was," or hearing okay 100 times each lecture), but she does a great job at explaining concepts and applying them to in-class problems. Online homework is fine if you don't procrastinate.
Dr. Perkins is so approachable and always willing to help. If you struggle with chemistry, GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. She will work through any problem until you understand it. Her tests make up a large portion of your grade so do well on them. Go to lecture and take notes from the textbook. A lot of dedication is required to do well in this class.
Prof did clicker points during lecture. Lectures were ok. She explained the concepts, but didn't connect ideas. The lectures were interesting for the most part. Her grading is hard, but the online practice problems were helpful for the tests.
Angela is an okay professor. I found her lectures sporadic and sometimes hard to follow. I'd recommend doing a ton of practice problems to do well on the test because just doing the assignments won't cut it. Also, her practice tests were much easier than the actual exam, which is super misleading.
Tests are hard most of the time and I had to do the reading to fully understand material, though she explains it well in class. Took her for chem1081,1082, and 2081 (and corresponding labs). I like how she lays out her chem labs. Knows chem very well and is approachable
Perkins knows what she is talking about but has a difficult time teaching her students. She seems to get offended when students don't understand a topic and ask questions. Her practice exams are easier than the tests which makes it difficult to know what parts to study. She says "alls you have to do" and "k" a ton as well which gets annoying.
Perkins is not at all clear in her lectures and she makes mistakes constantly. Practice tests are MUCH easier than the test so don't rely on them. Majority of your grade is based off of tests and not much else. Only people who like her are the ones who get A's and set the curve. If you can avoid it, do not take any class with her.
Was NOT informative of the expectations for 1082, NEVER SPECIFIED that you can't retake 1082 since there are no equivalent courses. Very disorganized lectures, dismissed student's questions. Confusing when Ochem concepts were introduced when learning general chemistry, and it often felt like you were studying for two different chemistry classes.
WORST professor I have had so far. DO NOT TAKE THE CBS CHEMISTRY SEQUENCE. Tests were harder than the practice tests, even though Perkins said they were similar. When she lectures, she is all over the place and it is very confusing. I have no clue why this sequence was created, but anyways, she should definitely not be the professor teaching this.
Professor Perkins is one of the best when it comes to professors. Her lectures are straightforward and easy to understand. There is a lot of homework and exams are fairly difficult. Exams are based on her lectures. She gives grades based on a bell-curve so if you stay a little above average (get C-C+ on the exams) you'll get a B in the class
Second semester of the sequence is rough; Perkins doesn't seem to realize that most students have never had any experience in the subject before. She goes through OChem material faster than the GenChem stuff, which just doesn't make sense. Reading and doing homework out of two different textbooks can be annoying. TESTS ARE HEAVY. Lecture is a MUST.
She is a good professor and knows chemistry and organic chemistry well. She gives good practice tests. The class is a bit accelerated because of the sequence design, but she makes it doable. The class is definitely hard, but its organic chemistry... it should be. She is approachable and office hours REALLY help.
Perkins FLIES through class. Practice problems for exams are 100% harder than anything you do in class. The class is accelerated but it shouldn't be. More than half the kids that started out in the CBS sequence have dropped. Exams always have one impossible question that no one gets right, but she never changes her teaching style.
While I can see how Dr. Perkins would be a strong professor when just teaching a regular paced organic chemistry course, she was not good for the CBS CHEM series. She flew through material and did not seem to care if her class understood, just that she got through what was planned for the day. Her practice tests are not reflective of the exams.
In Perkins' class, you decide your grade. It's a very large lecture, though very few people ask questions. You need to put in the work on your own to pass this class. To do well, consider any "suggested" homework as mandatory. If you have hw questions, go into office hours. If it is anytime except right before the exam you will have one on one help
Angela's lectures are great and understandable but she ALWAYS takes exams to the next level, which is unfortunate since that determines your grade
Angela is great. You really do need to put in the work, but if you do, you'll be happy you did. Chemistry requires a lot of time and practice. Pre-reading for lecture, taking good notes during lecture, reviewing your notes, and doing practice problems are a must if you want to do well in this class.
Angela will not teach you anything that you can't learn from the book by yourself. She constantly makes mistakes during lectures and doesn't care if the students understand the material as long as she finishes what she had planned for lecture that day.
Angela's lectures are handwritten on the board to see her thought process, and they are very useful. With the CBS chem sometimes it felt like I was studying for 2 different chem classes. I really hate how the tests are upped in difficultly in comparison to lecture and homework and how they are the vast majority of your grade.
Review the material before coming to class. Dr. Perkins utilizes the lecture time to thoroughly teach beyond the organic chemistry basics, diving into the applications and using example reactions on the fly. Come prepared (even with a little review) and you will learn much more!
This class is hard, but its chemistry. Go to office hours, Dr Perkins is very helpful and offers additional study tips and ways to solve problems. Tests are hard. Use old practice exams and optional practice problems to study. She even uses a few book problems for exam questions.
I realllly had to work for my A in this class, but there's a ton of resources for chem available that she helps you find. She gives good practice problems and HW, and the tests never had any surprises. She doesn't really seem to be thrilled to be teaching and doesn't seem super open to questions, but she does try to make sure you understand.
I was really behind in iClicker points due to a rough mental health patch ( low attendance), but I reached out to her, and she told me she woudn't put them in if they hurt my final grade. She's fair and wants you to succeed, but as this is her specialty, she goes really fast, so you have to really pick up the pace. Hard class but you can pass!
Pretty relatable and helpful in office hours
Perkins is probably one the of the worst professors I've ever had in my entire college career. She has no desire to make sure students are understanding the content she is presenting. She even once yelled at the class because people did not understand a concept and said that "it wasn't her job to teach us" as if thats not exactly what her job is.
Angela Perkins has been a defining person in my college career in how much stress her class has given me. Her lectures go incredibly fast and the tests are harder than the practice tests and material in class. I studied more for this class than my other classes combined and still got a lower grade. Do yourself a favor and avoid this class.
I loved Professor Perkins. She was so thorough in her lectures and she made sure that everybody actually understood what was going on. She assigns a lot of online homework, but it helps tremendously.
Professor Perkins was great this semester. Her lectures were really helpful and she was constantly asking for questions. Homework was difficult but I found it really useful for understanding material being covered in class. The practice exams were very similar to the types of questions on the actual exam, no surprises or trick questions.
The entire CBS chemistry sequence is difficult, however I will say that Perkins is a decent professor and is proficient in explaining the content but goes fast. Read the textbook (!) or you will not understand a single thing in lecture, also go to lecture, those iClicker points are a god-send. Exams are tough and notes are not online.
Don't spend your money on the CBS chem sequence. It is a total scam that does not have student's best interests in mind- especially if you are premed or predent or other health science. TAKE THE REGULAR CHEM TRACK. Perkins is fine, she just didn't match my learning style and then I was stuck with her for 3 semesters. Her lectures are hard to follow
don't take the CBS chem sequence. Unless you are 100% sure you are going to be a CBS major, this sequence is a complete waste of time if you change your mind about cbs later on. Perkins is ok, but makes a lot of mistakes during lectures and there are always mistakes on exams. She's very accessible and great at simplifying concepts.
I personally loved Perkins's lecture style both first and second semester. Her exams are certainly difficult and the curve isn't anything drastic, but the questions are fair. She is always available to help even though she may not seem super approachable (she doesn't care about kiss ups). Review Sapling and read the textbook and you will succeed!
This class DEPENDS on Perkins's lectures. For the first 2/3 of the class it's okay but the last 1/3 is really hard and she goes incredibly fast on difficult organic material. The lectures are otherwise manageable but the exams are much harder than the practice problems and don't necessarily match up with the homework.
Angela was very good at providing examples to help learning. Do the recommended practice problems.
she's a good teacher but kind of teaches in a haphazard fashion skipping around between concepts. also her exams are really difficult, she doesn't allow a notecard when other chemistry courses in different tracks teaching the same material are allowed notecards. Got to memorize every reagent and every situation, expect to spend lots of time studyin
This course was the most challenging I've ever taken. Dr. Perkins lectured in a very rushed and confusing manner. This is not all her fault as the entire course series is poorly organized but she did not seem to care about the success of her students and often seemed bothered by their questions. The tests are very hard. Overall, very hard course.
Not respectful of students. doesn't care. Hateful when replying to emails. I did not skip classes, took notes, did practice problems, read textbooks. did not do good on tests since her lectures are just copying examples in the textbook. does not explain the process. her lecture sucks. you just have to memorize the whole book to get an A.
Perkins is a good professor. She works quickly to stay on track but covers all material. Read the chapter before class to help you understand. DO ALL PRACTICE TESTS AND PROBLEMS. It's the only reason I did well. There are only so many problems they can put on the exam. It's about repetition. Study hard and you can succeed in this course!
She is a very good professor, but the class is very difficult. It is important to come to lecture and take good notes, and do all of the review assignments that are available. Doing as much practice as possible will prepare you for the exams. Her office hours are also helpful for getting extra help. The exams are hard, but typical for a chem class.
I didn't think organic chemistry could get any worse, but Angela made it so difficult. She constantly made mistakes during lectures and would never admit it. The passing grade got lower to around 40-45% because so many people were failing. You have to basically teach yourself everything in this class.
Organic Chemistry is obviously hard but she at least tried to make it fun. She laughed at her mistakes and admitted that she hated gen chem. She is a much better O chem teacher than she is a Gen chem one. Her lectures are pretty good but it helps a TON if you read the book along with it.
This class is a time sucker. It gets very difficult to do well if you don't read, and for O chem, the textbook is a MUST, along with attending all of the lectures. The practice problems and the textbook problems are a lot easier than the actual exams. This class is super hard and time consuming. Perkins is a decent prof, and iclicker is helpful.
This class, in general, is DIFFICULT. Dr. Perkins is not a great gen chem professor but she makes O Chem as easy as she can. You MUST attend lectures, read the textbook, & do all of her recommended practice problems. You won't pass off of sapling problems alone. Sometimes her explanations are confusing but she wants us to succeed.
This was a very tough class, but if you're willing to put in work with reading, taking great notes and reviewing them, and spending hours and hours on practice problems, you will survive. Perkins teaches quickly and has a tendency to make minor errors, so be sure to may attention and speak up if need be. She gives a lot of good studying resources.
Angela Perkins is interested in the topics she teaches in organic chemistry. The lecture videos are posted and are so short for big topics. She does not go into detail about the topics that are important for exams and the graded homework. She will give very few examples regarding a topic and then on the exams and homework they are far more complex.
Dr. Perkins seems to talk down to kids who ask questions in class, and makes people feel stupid for asking questions about OChem, which is such a hard class in the first place. Her online lectures are pretty brief and she expects you to fully understand difficult language and terms and remember everything from every past chem class you've taken.
hard to get ahold of outside of class, didnt really seem to care that teaching yourself chemistry online is a little different from learning in person. it is possible to do alright in this class, but i had to really work for it
Chem is hard regardless of the instructor, but Perkins makes it as hard as possible. Online classes don't help much either, and they're made a lot harder when your prof is almost aggressively unhelpful and doesn't seem to like teaching. Never had an email answered. Do not take her class. Take gen chem. This class is uniquely terrible.
doesn't seem to care about teaching or whether you do well, and she's just not a good teacher. I was doing well watching Emily Pelton's lecture videos until Perkins' videos took over. after watching her videos i'd have to go back to the textbook and read everything to fill so many gaps in knowledge. basically useless, and now im stuck with her:(
Perkins is a tough professor, but her class is manageable. You must do the practice problems and discussion problems if you want to succeed in her class. Read the chapters and watch her lecture videos to get insight into how she writes her exams. If you study you can usually predict what she will put. It's organic chemistry, it's difficult.
I have had Perkins for life science chem 2 and 3. I feel like my opinion has fluctuated a lot over the year, depending on how I'm doing in the class. Go to office hours, she is super nice and surprisingly funny. She can be a tad bit disorganized but she does care. She is a better ochem prof then gen chem. Watch lectures and ask her questions.
Do NOT take the life sciences track of chemistry!! Dr. Perkins was a decent professor in person, but the averages for us online are abysmal and her teaching is so scattered that it is almost impossible to learn anything. We do so fast that there is no understanding of any of the content. Better off with seasoned profs that know how to teach online.
Dr. Perkins is just not a good prof. Lecture videos are a mess & extremely difficult to follow. In-class discussions are useless bc no one wants to be there. She pretty much talks down to people who do ask ?s. Be prepared to spend most of your days doing chemistry. Sapling, reading the textbook, doing practice problems & daily studying are a must.
Perkins struggled with the transition to online learning, but she did try to help students. I felt that her exams were easier this semester when looking back from past exams she gave us. Read, take notes, show up to lecture, and do all discussion problems with HW. It's Ochem, its not easy but it's manageable if you form good study habits.
Perkins didn't have empathy towards students, which was hard, especially during a pandemic and online ochem class. Lots of lectures that are hard to understand. I learned more from YouTube than I did from her. You really have to teach yourself in this class. Also, her grading is overly specific and students had many concerns yet she never listened.
Perkins did NOT care about her student's success whatsoever; I don't think I've ever had a professor who so blatantly disregarded their students' needs. Multiple people would contact her in regards to things that were not working for them or questions that were clearly incorrect on exams. Her response? Passive aggressive announcements. Avoid her!!
angela strikes me as the kind of person who would say "bless me" after she sneezes. She reuses the lecture videos from last semester even though the class is in person. The problems she goes over in class are simple while the exam questions are insanely difficult.
The only way to actually pass this class with a good grade is by going to lectures. Everything on the homework and quizzes are covered in lectures. I'm the type that prefer paying extra attention in lectures to studying with a book outside class. Therefore, I love this class
The class is very tough. Lectures are very helpful and we used an online book and homework for class. However, the quiz problems were different than the online homework and practice problems assigned therefore I personally didn't do well on the quiz which is the majority of the grade. Nice professor but tough class.
I dont think Angelas a bad professor at all. Her lectures are really helpful. She goes through a lot of examples in class. If you pay attention during lectures, do the Achieve homework, and do the practice textbook problems, you should be just fine. Theres really nothing on the quizzes that should be a surprise if you put in the work.
Say what you want about the CBS chem sequence, but Perkins is such a good professor. Structures the class very well. Each unit builds on the previous. Must do a lot of studying out of lectures to do well in the class, but her tests are always very fair. Anyone who dislikes Perkins is probably just mad about their grade.
Perkins is an absolute gem. She structures the class so well and makes the test very fair. If you don't do well it is because you didn't understand the material. Having Perkins over the Chem sequence has been great and would recommend to anyone. Put in the time outside of class and you will be fine.
angela deeply frightens me on both an educational and personal level. i've dealt with passive aggressive emails that multiple students have also complained about for the entirety of the semester, and i recently found out she contacted students telling them to drop the course because theres basically no chance for them at this point. -10/10
Completely unreachable. Doesn't answer emails. Ask a question in class? Get ready to be talked to like you're an idiot
Angela genuinely does not care about students. teachers should want students to thrive and learn, however, she does not care about anyone. she is so passive and she has an attitude in lectures if you ask her anything. in addition, she says that grades are supposed to be low for competition, but she is a horrible teacher who reuses videos and mean
There's almost absolutely no way to study for this class. The lectures are short and very condensed. There are no practice materials for the quizzes other than book problems (which half does not have a solution). You can't find the correct answers for the previous tests. You will be given nothing to study for the final test.
Perkins was a good professor. To be successful you need to attend lectures, do practice problems, and redo problems from your past quizzes. She does a lot of helpful practice problems in lecture which is nice. She is also very helpful over email and gave me a chance and credit for a couple assignments I forgot to do.
Will probably end up getting a C in this class, although my hope was for a B. Although she doesn't technically count attendance, skipping lectures or not watching them online will set you up for failure. Doing the homework will truly boost your grade, and textbook practice problems are the key to doing well on exams.
It's just a super difficult class first of all. I think Perkins does a good job at making time for student questions and answering them well. Her lectures are much better than Pelton (everything about Perkins is better than Pelton) Hard to do really well on exams since there is little opportunity for partial credit, and exams are most of your grade
Perkins made the content way harder than it needed to be. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you don't go to lectures, you'll miss key information that she'll throw on exams.
Lectures are effective at highlighting most important sections from textbook, definitely read prior to class. Course schedule is established before first day & doesn't change, which I like so I can know exactly what I need to do & when. One complaint would be lecture time management: often very rushed at end yet still chose to end early sometimes
Good professor, hard class. Attendance isn't mandatory but highly recommended. Use office hours, best way to get questions answered. She is extremely helpful and tries to reexplain or offer different examples during office hours. Its a hard class, but I didn't expect differently from an organic chemistry class. Expect to spend time on material.
Dr. Perkins made a difficult class more tolerable. Class had weekly quizzes covering a chapter, but she provided lots of examples in class and in the lecture videos to help with the material. A lot of the quiz questions came directly from problem sets or were very similar.
Perkins get a lot of heat, but frankly, the class content is hard; it isn't really her fault. Her lectures are clear and concise, and the class format and schedule is clearly laid out in the syllabus/Canvas page. She provides you with the material to do decent. My complaint would be that she is very passive aggressive.
I really worked hard for my B in this class but Professor Perkins is not a bad professor if you put in the effort outside of class. She gives a lot of practice problems during lecture and gives extra credit for clicker point questions. The tests sometimes had trick questions but overall similar to the textbook, homework, and lecture problems.
Dr. Perkins effectively presented the week's content and had impeccable timing with her lectures. She was kind and helpful during office hours.
She is a nice professor but the pacing is awful in this course. We spent too much time with the easiest topics while the most difficult are skimmed through. The exams are horrible with the time limit of the exam not matching the difficulty of the exam. Go to tutoring the second you don't understand otherwise you won't understand the other topics.
Professor Perkins is a good instructor, but there are a few things that prevent her from being great. One of these things is that she doesn't explain the concepts well enough. Also, she is a very tough grader and there are very few chances to get points back. Meaning you will most likely be left with a grade you are unhappy with.
Very tough grader. Extremely difficult exams. Homework is a very good way to learn the material, but you have to go over it many times. Lots of available resources, none of which seem to help.
She is a great professor. Very good at explaining and very nice and caring if you go to her office hours. She does teach a super hard class and at a faster pace, so her class takes a lot of studying and mental effort.
She comes off intimidating at first but she is actually super helpful and incredibly respectful! I love being taught by her because she is engaging and funny during lectures. PRACTICE WITH THE BOOK. Go to her office hours b/c she is very efficient and personable. I love her honesty and appreciate her push for independence.
She was a terrible teacher, I had her for all 3 semesters. Her main goal in life is to see you suffer. She publicly announces that her goal is to fail at least 1/3 of the class each semester. That is very messed up. She makes it almost impossible to succeed. Please for your own sanity take the other chemistry track. It shouldn't even be offered.
She is a great professor! She clearly understands chemistry very well and is very good at explaining concepts. She is easily accessible when you email her and she is also just quite funny in lectures. Highly recommend!
Do not expect to pass this class if you do not go to office hours, get tutor help, watch YouTube videos, and read lecture materials. In lectures, she only covers the surface materials, but does example problems and q&a. Very beneficial to read before class. All the needed information is accessible via Canva. Her page is very organized.
Dr Perkins does not deserve the hate. I think she is an incredible lecturer, she makes very complex topics seem a lot simpler with her teaching style. She teaches by working through a ton of examples and practice problems and her knowledge of course topics is unbeatable. The CLS track is incredibly difficult and you should be prepared for that.
If you look forward to having your question answered with a passive-aggressive question, Angela is the professor for you. The class is hard but it is possible to succeed with substantial effort. Advocating for yourself can be difficult because she tends to assume the worst of her students. Watch out for sexist TAs and unclear grading standards :0
Professor Perkins was an amazing professor and it is such as shame she is not teaching Chem 2081 anymore. Although the class structure makes it difficult to ask questions during class, she is always happy to help during her office hours. Make sure to watch the lecture videos she posts before class starts and always go to tutoring hours by the TA's!
I appreciated her a lot more this semester compared to the 1st Life Sci class, and seemed to connect us a lot more this semester. Concepts are difficult but the lectures are key to understanding the content. I got by pretty well with just lectures and very little textbook reading or videos, but don't skip class. I wish she was teaching 2081! :(
I honestly thought she wasn't terrible one-on-one but frankly, most comments or feedback are very snarky and passive-aggressive. She is not even in the slightest bit sympathetic, Proctorio not working for the last two hours? Not her problem. Want to find a solution so you don't receive a zero? Doesn't care. Being a responsible student? Too bad.
Professor Perkins can be a tough grader, but her lectures are engaging and the concepts stick. Use all the resources - textbook, office hours, and unstuck ai - to excel. Attendance is a must, but the class is manageable with diligence.
I hated this class. It was the worst class ever and it moves so fast. I genuinely would rather just be homeless atp. It ruined my sanity and I dropped it so fast.
Genuinely a miserable class. Lectures skim the surface on material that will be covered on quizzes and homework. Homework is painfully long and the AI support system is not good. Countless hours of studying for a 55% on quizzes. Also, you're actually cooked if you miss a day of lecture. If you don't have to take Chem 1081, then stay away from it.
This class is inherently difficult, but Perkins teaches CLS the best in my opinion. I've had two other professors in CLS and neither of them run through examples or make the content as clear as she does. Definitely go to class and do practice problems, but she is the best you are going to get. She is also very nice in office hours.
I love her. very helpful in office hours! Clearly displays and explains all of her lecture material
Studying outside of lectures is a requirement for this course. Attend office hours whenever possible. If you can't make the time to study excessively for this course, do not take it. The worst part was needing to memorize nearly every single equation.
Dr. Perkins is overall a great professor. She comes off as a little intimidating but is always helpful when answering questions. She explains concepts clearly and logically. Yes, you will have to study outside of class to have a more comprehensive understanding of the material.
The class itself sucked but I thought she did a good job with it. Her lectures were clear, organized, and understandable, but she did often throw in hard questions on quizzes. Good but difficult professor.
I have had her for the last two years for life sciences chem. She isn't a bad professor, but she is rude, passive aggressive, and the opposite of wanting her students to succeed. I have never met a more unkind prof who couldn't care less about you or your grade. Stay away from this track if possible.
Lectures and textbook are easy to understand, but she just briefly skims over material during class. Doesn't care about your success. Quiz material is always way harder than the practice gone over in class. There is no partial credit on quizzes, so you will get the whole question wrong if you forget to round. She is also impossible to contact.
Dr Perkins is a fine instructor -- the issue is that the quizzes are absolutely brutal. She does go over questions during class (occasionally as extra credit, which was nice), but you definitely need to study plenty for this course. The quizzes are online and offer no partial credit (with a very slim area for error), so be prepared for that.
This class is hard, but you should expect that out of a college pre-med chem class. Office hours are useless – not only is she rude to students, but 10+people attend and she only has 3 chairs. There is no partial credit on tests bc they are online, so small mistakes can cost you full letter grades. Take this class with another professor if you can.
Seems tough but genuinely cares, willing to help you overcome hurdles
The lecture content was mostly explained well, but sometimes she went too fast or skimmed over it. I would recommend reading the textbook before the lecture for a better understanding. The worst part about this class was the exams! They were 15-20 questions worth 3-8 points each and were all or nothing. It is fast-paced, so try not to fall behind.
Although the class was difficult, I believe Dr. Perkins does a great job teaching the content. She is always available after class to answer questions. The only problem I had was the proctored online quizzes. They are 85pts each and there is zero partial credit on questions. There is a dropped quiz at the end of the semester plus lots of extra cred
You have to go to lecture to get the extra credit points, but no attendance is taken
Dr.Perkins is a wonderful professor especially for the chem department. She is very understanding of conflicts and very great and quick with emails.
Very clear and detailed lectures, was great at answering student questions. Can be a little condescending at times.
Stay faaaaaaaaar away form her.
Great professor. I would recommend her for 1082 (not 1081). If you keep up with the reading and attend lecture, you should do well. I would also recommend paying attention in lab, for a lot of the content from lab helps in understanding lecture material.
She is so rude and doesn't care about her students. She is so hateful when replying to emails and not accommodating at all. She scheduled our test for West Bank ten minutes after a class I have that's a 20 minute walk and when I tried to work with her on the issue she was aggressive and didn't bother working with me.
Your choices between professors for CHEM1082 are awful and worse. Not only does Perkins have useless lectures where you will have to teach yourself the material outside of class, but the class averages for quizzes were often below 60% with the most recent one being 50%. Expect rude unhelpful emails after bad scores putting the blame on you not her
She really just doesn't teach. The frame of this class is that it's pretty much all on you
The subjects covered in 1082 are not as bad as they may seem. If something is unclear to you, then reading the textbook is a must. It should also be noted that the class will ramp up the difficulty near the end. But for the lab, pray that you get a good TA. Mine was absolutely terrible and graded arbitrarily like she was on some power trip.
Attendance is recommended but it's a large lecture, so it won't be noticed if you miss a few. Follows a flipped format where you read the textbook on your own time and do practice work in class. The unit tests can be very content-heavy with lots of tedious math. Not the worst, but I suggest taking just gen-chem if chemistry isn't your thing.
Very passionate about chemistry. Extra credit for being in class helps.
Very rude and aggressive for no reason. Answers questions as if you're forcing her to. Needlessly harsh grading. Useless lectures. Exam questions on things we never learned in class. To be honest just stay far away from this atrocious Life Sciences track. Perkins is not a good professor at all. Who created this horrific track?
Something about 75% of the class was weights by exams. That were made roughly the night before or day of which made it difficult to have an idea of what would be tested. Nothing great, nor terrible about her, which she ≈ avg for a Professor. I think she could care a little more about the students as the averages were very low for exams (about 58%).
Perkins and most of her TAs do not care about you. They make broad rubrics and expect you to read minds, nearly failing you for trivial mistakes on lab reports. They seem to get off on bullying students and expect grad-level skills, despite mostly being sophomores in the class. Said "if 1/3 aren't failing, I'm not doing my job right." Evil.
This is a difficult class, but Dr. Perkins does a good job of breaking down the really complicated material. Make sure to attend all lectures, as nothing is posted afterwards. Do a lot of practice and stay on top of lecture material. She can seem blunt, but overall her advice and lessons are helpful, and she wants her students to do well.
Overcomplicates things
Beware of the life science track. It's attainable for sure, but HARD. Dr. Perkins was a good professor lecture wise, but the quizzes are brutal and the grading system is a little weird. Go to class, get the 35 extra credit points, do the homework for the extra 130. It will help SO much. Study for the quizzes, know that everyone is struggling.
I would say she goings everywhere on the board which is really confusing when you look down to write down something then shes onto something else suddenly. Around a time I just watch YT videos (mostly organic chem) about the things I learn in chemistry and that helped me more then her but I like the iclicker questions for free bonus points.
straightforward when asking questions after lecture/office hours. briefly covers important topics that later appear in exams. Claims attendance is optional (only offers extra credit for participation) but doesn't post lecture problem solutions which would be helpful for practice if absent. If you get her, do your pre-reading or you're lowk doomed
Perkins isn't the best professor but isn't the worst. She yaps a lot to where her content gets confusing it's better to learn through the textbook/videos. Can be passive aggressive which is the main reason why students don't like her. Class is quiz heavy and it will affect grades. Go to class get the extra credit do the hw and get the hw points.
The online homework assignments took me an average of 3 hours, so plan for plenty of work. There are questions to answer during lecture for extra credit, and they literally saved my grade, so do the extra credit. If you skip lecture, you will be so lost.
Biggest tip would be get the iclicker pts from lecture. Ended with a 98% so it's very possible to get an A, but requires a lot of time and energy. She doesn't want you at office hours unless you have specific questions. Cumulative final was difficult so score high on the quizzes. They're graded pretty strictly though, so read problems carefully.
My TA carried this class for me to get an A. Anyways, there are 2 lab reports, but honestly the rubric is not clear at all on how to get full credit. Meet with your TA to see what you can do. There are also 2 quizzes throughout the semester, but they are lowkey fine. There are a lot of worksheets as well with the experiments.
