Not a good teacher. She read from the slides verbatum and did not elaborate. Repetedly a request was made for the slides but she said no and to take notes but would not slow down for you to finish notes. If you want a good learning experience don't take her
I liked the in class discussions instead of just listening to the teacher lecture
Dr. Schwendiman is an excellent professor. Students complaining about not being given the lecture but had to take their own notes were the ones who wanted to skip lecture. She was encouraging her students to actually do some work; pay attention, attend class, and write down the major points. Her exams were fair and challenging.
This professor was great. She explained topics clearly and found creative ways to help us learn concepts. Highly recommended.
Dr. S, was the best TA I have ever had. I am now in grad school and I use her as an example of a what a good TA should be to this day.
Fantastic teacher, enthusiastic, cares about her students and wants them to succeed.
Great lab teacher. Always had fun in her class and learned a lot!
Great job as a lab instructor
Not only is Dr. Schwendiman a great professor, she is very approachable if you have questions. She knows her material and has a gift for teaching. I wish she taught more of my classes!
Very fun teacher, she is young and makes the material interesting. However; you must put a lot of time into her class. The tests go a lot deeper than just the material covered over powerpoints in lecture. Not an easy class, but you will get a good grade it you apply yourself.
Really passionate about what she is teaching. Will go to great lengths to make sure you understand the material. She does exam questions from lecture mostly. Would love to take her again!
Dr. Schwendiman's class is hard! It is even harder if you do more than just attend her class. I have maintained a 4.0 for 2 years until now. While she has a wealth of information to share, she runs her class like it is a 300 level class. I sure wish I would have checked her out on here before taking her class!
Fun teacher. She loves what she is teaching and is genuinely interested in educating. She told us to skim over the text book with lecture notes. Not a bad thing at all. She is consistent and fair which is pretty great! I hope to take her in 201 and 202.
DrSchwendiman is a very informative teacher. Difficult class but when you recognize you are having trouble just ask her questions she will do her best to try and get the information across to you. Not sure if I passed the class yet but I was taking it on sat would recommend avoiding that choice. Great teacher just have the time to fully commit. :)
Great instructor if you put the time in alot of information took it summer 1 Dr S will got out of her way for you to understand the materal I meet with her everday before class and it helps I can't visual read a textbook so just taped and listened 24/7
I LOVE SCHWENDIMAN! Personally, I loved how she lectured (powerpoints) and she explains everything so well. She lets you know what to expect in tests but they can still be somewhat difficult but if you study you will get an A no doubt! She offers some chances for extra credit so take advantage of them!
She is an amazing professor, enjoyed the class. Very knowledgable and learned so much in a short amount of time(summer). Lecture was my favorite part, power points really prepare you for exams. Approachable and not intimidating makes it easy to ask questions. Loved the fun facts which kept me interested even more, study, do homework you'll be fine!
She does a great job of breaking down the material and the concepts. She cares about her students and wants to ensure that the material she presents is fully comprehended.
Dr. Schwendiman is a great professor. She is super clear during lectures. However if you expect to get and A without trying that will be difficult. Her lecture are long but what do you expect when there is so much information to learn. Attend class and pay attention. She will always help if you need it. Just be prepared to work if you want the A.
Dr. Schwendiman's is an excellent professor, clearly explaining all the details that I needed to know in order to advance in my educational goals. She is very through with the information, and her slides are available to review online through Canvas. An extremely approachable professor, I would recommend her to anybody who needs Anatomy/Physiology.
Dr. Schwendiman is amazing. She takes whatever time is needed to make sure you understand the material. Lectures are long but she keeps it so interesting that you don't even notice. I struggled with the first exam and the next class she had printed out (for the entire class) a packet explaining study techniques for science. She ROCKS!
Lab practicals are hard, you have to study. She is great at lecture, entertaining and super knowledgeable. It's a really fun class, but it is hard work.
Dr. Schwendiman is one of the best professors I have had at GCC. She is very helpful and her lectures are very well organized. The class is interesting and I would take another class from her. The class is hard but Dr. Schwendiman explains things really well and some of the stuff I learned is really cool.
Although she is knowledgeable & willing to help u, her class is HARD. Her lecture exams are on every 2-3 chapters & require rigorous study. Don't skip class cuz she goes over things that may not be found on the powerpoints. Lab practicals r easy as long as u take model pics & label them, but you'll have to ace the lecture exams to get a high grade.
She was one of the hardest teacher I've had.
Dr. Schwendiman was truly one of the best professors I have ever had. She really cares about her students and their success. BIO 201 is very dense and you absolutely have to study, but she makes it interesting and VERY manageable. Go to class bc she does include content on exams only said in class. If you study, you will do well. I got a 96%.
A good example of how RMP reviews are not always accurate. One of the hardest classes I've taken, and not because of material. Lab quizzes are random and too heavily weighted. Lecture exams cover 3+ chapters. Maybe she is nice to some, but she comes across as short to me. Tough material, not made easier by the teacher in this case. Good luck.
Dr. Schwendiman is one of those instructors that expects you to use your common sense when answering questions on the exam. She makes her test questions super confusing on purpose because you are supposed to use "common sense" answering them. I definitely would NOT recommend her.
I absolutely love this professor and her lectures. She makes everything easy to understand and relates everything to current events. Her lectures are interesting. There is a bit of reading, but she gives plenty of time to get the assignments done
Lecture is very clear. Reading text book and studying is a MUST. Exams are very specific and if you do not have a full understanding you won't do well. Always available to help! I RESPECT that everyone definitely EARNS their grade. Looking to take a class and leave with actual knowledge? She is the one! Caring & pleasant! Will Take Again for BIO!
Would be 5 stars but class is not interactive enough and just listening to her lecture you easily drift off especially in the afternoon slot when a nap is needed. Random extra credit offered in class, so show up Do the reading, book companion website practice tests and the canvas quizzes and you will be prepared for the tests and an A in the class.
The bio test hardly ever had anything we studied, and for the labs if you don't study the bones and muscles and get them down letter for letter she will mark you off points for the letters. you can study your butt off but it doesn't get you any where in this class.
Incredibly technical tests, no study guides and you must go through the powerpoints on canvas to review . She's a nice teacher but the class itself is difficult. The tests are also heavily weighted so it does affect your grade!
This was my first year of a college level biology course, and professor Schwendiman was a amazing teacher. She is extremely knowledgeable about the information in the lectures, and provides great additional diagrams and examples to help students understand.
Warning if you are GREAT at taking TEST ONLY this is the teacher for you! This class is difficult and this professor makes it miserable! If you have a question it will NOT be answered, and you will look stupid. Your lab's will not be graded so good luck finding out if your answers are correct. I was excited for this class, I dreaded every minute!
I really enjoyed Dr. Schwendiman and Bio160. She was very clear on grading criteria and what was to be expected on exams. She is very helpful, makes class fun, and she wants you to succeed. I like the 10 pt quizzes that prepare you for practical exams and other various 10 pt assignments that help with your grade. I highly recommend her!
Dr. Shwendiman is a very solid teacher. Her Bio181 class is the first science class I've taken in college & I'm happy I choose her. It is a tough class and tho attendance isn't mandatory, you won't pass if you ditch. Read the slides ahead of time, take the quizzes, record the lectures, and be diligent. 5 tests, 100 points each; no study guide.
BIO160 wasn't that hard. I used the powerpoints to study for lecture. The powerpoints are very clear. Make sure you actually look at stuff during lab and I asked questions when I wasn't sure of the parts. The people who missed lab in my group didn't do as well. I would take this teacher again.
I took this class in the summer. This is a basic biology class but there is a lot of information that needed to be covered in a very short amount of time. I thought Dr. Schwendiman did a great job explaining concepts and keeping it interesting. Her tests are tough, if you don't read the material and study you won't pass. I would take her again.
I learned more in this class than all throughout college. Dr. Schwendiman is a great professor, and she knows what she's talking about. There is A LOT of information that is covered between lecture and lab; if you miss one class then expect to be behind. You definitely have to study for her exams and practicals, but if you study then you'll pass.
Take another instructor provides no study guide and tests are tough.
She tests from both lecture/ powerpoint and the book, so it will be very beneficial to read the slides and the book before the test. (I got a bad grade on my first test because of this) She does not hand out study guides, so it is hard to tell what she will test you on. This class was okay. Not good and not bad. She also does not collect the labs.
If you care about the material, take this professor. The tests are hard, but the material is hard. She is organized and she cares, she gives you everything you need, but she will not hand you an A. If you want to walk out of a class feeling confident, or have plans to continue in the bio field and want a solid foundation, this is the teacher.
This is my second time taking a class with Dr. Schwendiman. I chose her class because I like her teaching style. She is very knowledgeable and makes class interesting. She is caring and wants you to learn. She is happy to answer any questions you may have to understand the material. If you can fit her into your schedule, I highly recommend her!
Extremely difficult class. Doesnt give study guides. Shell tell you that you should know everything from PowerPoint, lectures, & book all for you to be tested on things that are worded so poorly that its hard to understand what the actual question is on the exam. Best advice I can give is to form a study group & study day & night on all material
Does not explain ANYTHING in lab. You dont even have to show up to lab to pass the tests, just memorize the entire lab manual with every tiny detail :/
I do not recommend. Her study guides only have like 5 questions so it's hard to tell what she's going to test you on. Her texts are EXTREMELY hard. The highest test score I've ever received from her was an 80. Doesn't take attendance but you have to know and understand the material in order to pass the class.
I am an A student and would NEVER take this class again with this teacher. She gives no study guides but gives over 100+ vocabulary words and leaves them blank on the test for you to fill in. Cant memorize vocabulary, then I would not sign up with this teacher. She makes the test super hard on purpose because she said she wants us to think.
I have taken this class in the past at a different school, and I failed it because I didn't know anything about biology. When I came to this class, I understood biology. She is very specific in her lectures, and draws everything out to help you visualize what's going on. I'm not big on giving feedback unless it is deserved. She is a really good one
Poor teaching, she just reads directly off the slides and shows no enthusiasm for the material. The tests are ridiculously hard and she doesnt care if youre not passing. Im an A student, and didnt even pass this class. Take it with anyone else.
She's a good choice for lab and lecture in Bio156. There is a ton of material to cover so make sure you come to class ready to pay attention. Regardless if you miss something during lecture you will need to study for quizzes and exams. This class was tough but she's really nice and will help you if you ask for it. Make sure to participate!
You have to study every single day of the week to be prepared for her lecture exams !! Requires a lot of work.
182 is the hardest bio class GCC offers. I took this professor specifically because of her willingness to work with her students- if you honestly put in the time amd effort it takes, realistically, she will make sure you don't fail. It is an incredibly intense class, she can't help that. Put. In. ThThe. Effort.
Dr. Schwendiman really cares about her students. BIO182 is a very information heavy class which requires a lot of studying. Only thing I struggled with was clarity.
Dr. Schwendiman is helpful but the class is tough. There are a lot of chapters to cover in one semester, but this is the second time I have taken the class and Dr. Schwendiman is doing a much better job than my teacher last semester. I think it is just a hard class. But I am on track to pass the class with a B this semester. So far so good.
This class is an easy lab science credit. As long as you go to class and study a little bit you can get a good grade.
The first half of the semester is harder than the second. The first half covers evolution and plants. The second half covers animals. They are easier to learn. My grade increased in the second half of the semester.
Her lab practicals were extensive, but anyone could get a 100 on every one of them. It's just memorization. Her exams were more difficult. You had to actually study the text book and understand how things worked, not just the names of things. I regret not preparing more for the exams, because an A is not an unreasonably hard grade to get.
This class takes some time to study for but isn't that hard when you actually put the time in. Make sure you study the vocabulary and all the classification of the things in lab. Some of the stuff in lab is really cool to look at.
she is a wonderful teacher, she really goes out of her way to explain and help you understand if you ask questions! You cant expect to pass if you are used to winging tests. You have to understand the processes and the systems in order to pass the exams.
This is a really good class. It is super interesting. You have to study a little but if you do you can get an A. The lectures are really cool.
Lab is fun you get to look at a lot of animals. You have to study for lecture and the exams, but she wants you to succeed.
Not bad. Lecture heavy and a LOT of material is covered but she's easy to ask questions to and good at explaining it. You HAVE to study A LOT because there is a lot of material.
Dr. Schwendiman is the rudest, most unprofessional professor in the Maricopa district. She is a biased grader! The same amount of information per answer from two different students yields two different grades. Her exams are hard and do not reflect her teaching. Stay away from any class that she teaches.
I really enjoyed taking this class! Although there is a lot of material that you have to learn so you have to pay attention and study.
She is very helpful during lab and her lectures are interesting and provides her notes online. However, she crams info up until the test, and the study guides are very short and are worth few points. She rarely collects the lab work and when she does she gives you very little points. Also, the weekly lab quizzes are hard, so study the lab well.
She may be good for some people and their learning style but honestly my experience was horrible, the exam questions are worded poorly and she isn't too specific sometimes for what lab pages need to be done. Do you like Spelling Bee's? Well that is what you will get with her, the grading is harsh and spelling shouldn't matter in lab in my opinion.
Loads of material but she explained it in a way that makes sense! Really need to memorize, study, and understand concepts and that's not something you can really teach. Grading was a bit unfair, but it was hard to fight because she's such a sweet person. Would still take her again. She made biology fun and that's enough for me.
You would think for an anatomy class there would be plenty of homework, quizzes, and study guides to help for the tests, but there was NONE because she refused to make them. She basically told us to read the textbook for exams and that didn't help for obvious reasons. She doesn't care enough to help her students exceed in a hard class. Avoid her.
Doctor Schwendiman was a great Professor! As long as you show up to every class and take notes, and study, you can pass with an A. She covers all the material on the exams in her lectures. She took great care to make sure you understood what she was lecturing on.
Good class not too hard
She helped me out a lot when We had to change to online claases
She cares about students and wants everyone to do well. The class has a lot of information but if you study its ok. Lab is fun because you get to see lots of animals. You get to take the quizzes multiple times until you pass.
Her lectures are clear and organized. She draws out hard concepts to help you understand them. I learned a lot of cool stuff about anatomy. I just needed a lab science credit but I am glad I took this class.
This class online is easy. The exams are open book.
She was very helpful and caring. She went out of her way to help me when we went online for class in the spring. I accidentally missed the first online exam because I was confused and never did online classes before. She helped me catch up and made sure I got to do the exam.
As long as you do the material for the class it isn't that hard. Some other students thought it wa hard but they didn't always come to class of pay attention. There is a lot of stuff to learn but it wasn't that hard.
Great instructor for 160.
She is the absolute worst teacher in the state of AZ. Her tests are unbelievably hard and im a 4.0 straight A student. I would never wish this class upon my worst enemy. i cant express how awful at teaching she is and how awful her lectures are and then none of it is on her tests its so terrible. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!!!!!!
Easily the WORST professor Ive had in my entire academic career. I have a 2.85 GPA and I was not getting above a C on any of the exams. Exams are nothing like the lectures. She says that the questions have more than 1 correct answer but we have to find the most correct. Her tests average was a 65% for the 1st and a 72% for the 2nd exam. RUNN!!
This class is an easy A if you watch the lectures and do the labs . praticals are simple.
exams are open book with the online class. I have a B just by using my notes on the exams. there isn't much homemwork, you just have to do the lecture and lab stuff and take good notes, then take the exams and practicals.
If you put a little time into the class it is pretty easy and interesting.
Went out of her way to help me
The lecture vidoes help make the class easy to understand and if you follow the directions it is kind of easy to get an A. The exams are open book.
dont know y people said this class was hard. it was ez if you follow directions
great teacher, my favorit class this semester
great class, great teacher
great class, learned lots, getting an A
cool class, watch'd cool videos
This class made me learn a lot and it was fun. Even though it was online the teacher was easy to talk to. You can email or she will set up a zoom with you when you have questions. For an online class this is a good one.
For the first time, I actually understood biology with the human anatomy/ physiology aspect! Notes and quizzes actually prepare you for the tests. Take her class, you will not regret it! She always responded to my questions promptly. Also gives you a big extra credit opportunity.
The class is labor intensive. Test aren't particularly difficult except the fill-in-the blank. No partial credit for spelling mistakes the entire question is marked wrong. You will not know what the correct answer is for the fill-in-the-blanks and expect to see them again. She gives 1 extra credit assignment which is was harder than calculus 1.
The lectures are presented in a way that I could understand the material. The teacher is accessible. The class is well organized so I know what I am suppose to be doign each day. The teacher also sends out reminders of what to do everyday and about when the exams are due. I am taking this as a summer class and expect to get an A.
She is organized and cares for her students. There is a lot of info to learn, but she provides good material, and the textbook is helpful. Lots of effort is required to learn and do well in this class, so if you are willing to give it, I think you will do well and enjoy her class.
Good material and presented in an interesting manner. I really wish she would spell check her lecture material and tests. The class is pretty straight forward but the wording and spelling on the exams makes it hard to understand the questions.
I don't understand some of the complaints with Professor Schwendiman. The lectures are extremely straight forward and as long as you do your part and pay attention, there is no reason you should not pass this class. Everything in the test are in the lecture videos, no trick questions.
People with good reviews are INSANE! The materials she presented was way too fast and so overwhelming to the point where I (4.21 GPA) could not perform better than a 50% on an exam. She was inaccessible for questions. The tests were so convoluted and she is so arrogant. PLEASE PLEASE take someone else! Save your GPA
In the lab, she once spent two weeks on the bones and then spent one lab period on the muscles (two days before the test). You had to know the muscles and their functions to get credit on the practicals, which was impossible to learn in two days. Please avoid her at all costs she does not know how to teach!
I read the reviews before they are haters. We had multiple labs on muscles and bones before the practical and you can use your notes and the lab manual for the online class so its an easy A. I asked the teacher questions and got response in like less than an hour. she as nice. Videos are a little fast but I paused them to help take notes.
easy class and open book tests. responds to email fast. schedule was there are first day so i could schedule with work
great teacher
She really likes biology the class was good.
great class, if you do the work it isnt that hard, summer has a fast pace
solid class
I like the hybrid format
Dr. Schwendiman has been a fantastic professor and provides multiple ways to learn the (significant amount of) material. You can tell she cares for all of her students and went out of her way to help me both academically and personally when I ran into some unexpected hurdles. I feel extremely lucky to have had her as my professor during this time!
Love hybrid format Teacher was very helpful
hybrid class is good but you have to do the online work and show up for class. the class was interesting but I did have to study
She is very sweet and kind and can answer your questions but she is pretty bad at teaching and i don't like how during exams she tells you to study everything and not give you and study guides there was way to many tests a quizzes and it was very stressful so i dropped this class to take during the summer. i really do not recommend this teacher
She is very passionate about the subject but poorly lectures in class and covers very little during in person lecture, gives brief explanations during labs, assigns a lot of content outside of class that is difficult to keep up with. As well as very brief when you talk to her in person, somewhat awkward, majority drop from her class toward the end
i honestly wish she could be my professor forever lol. I took her bio182 class and the information is very heavy and dense and the tests can be very difficult because there are written sections. however, her lectures and narrated slideshows are so awesome and it helped me understand the material better. she knows exactly what she's doing :))
This professor is one of the hardest professors I have ever taken. I took the course hybrid and it was all over the place. If you want to pass the class with a good grade, find another professor.
good class and you do have to learn lots of stuff but it is interesting. she cares a lot about her students. if you work hard you will do well
If you want to do well don't skip class or class materials. Lots of students dropped but they told me they didn't watch the online lectures and many skipped the in class lectures. It helps to go to class.
She could be hit or miss, but I personally found her class to be very challenging. There was an overwhelming amount of information to memorize, and the tests and quizzes carried significant weight. If your goal is to pass the class, I would recommend considering finding another professor.
The exam questions come directly from the content provided. If you watch her videos she goes over the answers to all the exam questions. The lab practical questions are all directly from the labs. In the in-person lectures help explain the harder stuff. This class is a lot of material but if you focus it isn't that hard.
Professor Schwendiman was a great professor overall. While the presentations were heavy on material, you could use them on any and all tests. Make sure to reach out to her if you are marked down on any questions on the quizzes/tests - I got an A solely because I asked her to recheck and explain where I went wrong. Other than that, great professor!
This class was extremely hard, here exams were super hard, and they weight a lot, little to no extra credit opportunities, you can't retake the quizzes either.
This class was easy if you watched the videos and take good notes. Everything on the exam comes from the videos.
Exam questions all come from the material in the vidoes. If you watch them and study you will do fine.
Easy class and she lets you use a note sheet on exams. Lots of students say it is hard but they are not watching the vidoes or taking notes. I take notes and it is easy.
I watched all the lectures and paid close attention, but the lecture exams were very detailed and the information she taught was broad. I think it was also unfair the amount of lab drawings she had us do. I get that you need to spend 3 hours per credit hour, but you have to dedicate more than that for this class. I wish she was more available too.
Lectures were very broad and you have to rely on the textbook a lot. Exams were difficult and weighed a lot, which did not help since her lectures aren't that detailed. Little extra credit opportunities. Also very strict with spelling on exams, yet she is not a good speller. Saw lots of mistakes on her lectures and also her pronunciation of words.
the exams are hard but directly from the lecture videos. if you study the videos and know the stuff it is easy to pass. there is a lot to learn but it isn't that hard
Dr. Schwendiman was a great professor who cares about her students. She is not only very knowledgeable but also very kind and helpful. She takes the time to make sure you understand the material and also takes the time to get to know you. Her class was challenging but she gives you the support and resources to succeed if you put in the work.
I've taken 2 classes with Dr. Schwendiman and I can't recommend her enough. She is very knowledgeable and provides so many resources to help you understand the material. She's very kind, funny, and understanding. As a hybrid class, it is necessary to have time outside of lecture to succeed in this course. She's overall great!
If you actually want to learn something take this professor. If you are not interested in learning I would not take this class.
Take this professor if you want to learn. If you do not want to learn anything do not take this class.
Dr. Schwendiman is kind and dedicated, but her reversed class structure isn't effective for me. In-class activities don't reinforce what I study, leaving me confused. More than half the class dropped after the second exam due to low averages. Despite studying harder than ever, my scores haven't improved, and I'm struggling more than before.
It's a hybrid class and a reversed style where u do the lectures at home. The lectures and videos are very broad and don't cover all the fine details that are in the exams. You don't get opportunities to retake an exam and tests are the only grades u get. Unfortunately, I'm not the only one struggling, more than 1/2 my class dropped by this point.
Professor Schwendiman's class covers a lot of material, but staying engaged with the lectures and using tools like Unstuck AI can help you succeed. It's challenging but manageable if you put in the work.
Tests are impossible. Lectures are fine but don't correspond with test material. She assumes everyone has a basis of knowledge in cladograms and evolutionary biology. She can be condescending and not very understanding.
Dr. Schwendiman is a great instructor if you put the work into the class. If you participate in the class and do the homework the class is not that hard.
This class is super interesting. The beginning was hard but after the first module it got easier and we talk about a lot of interesting stuff about the body.
Not sure why people think this is a bad class. The teach is cool and helps.
Dr. Schwendiman is very helpful is you ask for help. I do the online work and come to class prepared. She has high standards but I am learning a lot in class. She worked with me to take make up exams when I was sick. I would highly recommend her.
good class
you have to review the vocabulary by yourself, which is fine, but she wants you to look up the definition. on the day of the test, she marked It as wrong; alright. I tried looking at the textbook, and it's not even there. you feel pretty confident on tests because you know each question and you don't even get a passing grade
Cool class
She really wants her students to do well. There is a lot of reading and she is very clear with her expectations. There is one group project but if everyone does their part its super easy. I'm not a fan of the reverse classroom format but I think it would be a good option if you were retaking the class rather than taking it for the first time.
summer class has fast and awesome, everyone should take this class
The biology professor to take if you are a biology major or will be doing anything with plants/animals/insects/evolution in the future. Lab content is on both lecture and lab tests, lab is a big part of the content
