She is amazing!!!
Prof Sumegi is one of the best Profs you will come across.
interesting and funny lectures...that unfortunatly have little to do with what we're tested on. vague requirements, doesn't seem to care about the students much. bottom line: cool lady, not a cool teacher.
This lady knows how to live and how to teach--she just has to be allowed to teach where her passions lie.
Lectures were difficult to sit through and she delivered her material very quickly. She definitely knows what she is talking about, but I wouldn't say she is a good professor. Might be better for independent study.
She definitely knows her material. Sometimes, she goes off on these wonderful tangents and stories which are entertaining, but often not pertinent to the task at hand. Great lectures, but sometimes her energy needs to be refocused.
amazing prof!! inspired lectures, sense of humour. generous with out of class help when asked. wonderful lectures, but not an easy class. she's very passionate... it's contagious.
She is very helpful out of class. I had a question about my exam and she went through it with me question by question. Not many profs are willing to do that.
No one laughts at her jokes. She isn't clear when it comes to exams. She thinks that just because Buddhism states there is struggle in Human being she thinks it not necessary to help those who are struggling in her class. Smiling buddhist isnt always nice
A little strange, but very clear and marks very easily.
This woman is a phenomenol professor. When I was in first year she had us prepare for three hard essay questions. But she had us answer just one - whatever one we liked. And she handed out candy, for real. In the exam.
Unprepared, unwilling to control class, and not a whole lot to say.
She is Buddha! Her calmness and passion infuse her lectures and she is very knowledgable. She is approchable and will help when asked. I bet she's achieved Moksha.
provides great outlines on website. interesting videos. lengthy explanations of concepts.
This professor likes to laugh at her own jokes. Her lectures are fast paced, so I suggest taking the itv tapes home and writing down everything she says, otherwise expect to do poorly on the exam! I found she was not very approachable too!
Looks great for her age
most wonderful prof ever!!
Great prof, great class. I am a 4th year eng student, taking this couse as a filler. ENG STUDENTS, TAKE THIS COURSE (BIRD)She makes the class interesting. To fast paced, i think not, lots of time to sit back. Once again GREAT PROF.
Very good prof. She's funny - cracks a lot of jokes which she thinks are really funny. Knowledgeable. Interesting class. Easy exam.
weird, very weird. kinda flakey...
Is fun and approachable when you get to know her. Always entertaining, even during 3-hour lectures. Laughs a lot. Does her best teaching very vague material. Can mark hard. Eccentric.
She seems kinda out there sometimes but I think she is just very enlightened. She is very good at explaining material that defies explanation. Really funny if you have a sense of humour too!
Excellent proff, smart and funny. The lectures are interesting sometimes and boaring at others.
Interesting and has easy exams, but she isn't always clear with the material and doesn't help too much preparing for the exams. I got a B+, but could of done better if she explained what material was relevant and what was not.
Never had a better prof in my life! she explained concepts that seemed to be unexplainable. Funny, cute, and incredibly intelligent. i can't think of a single bad thing to say about her or the course. i'm seriously going to take every class she teaches.
Enjoyed her classes.
I think she's terrible! Her lectures are utterly boring and I fall asleep everytime. The material is interesting. She always thinks she's really funny, which she's not!
I think shes a great prof who can an amazning ability to explain what is very difficult to explain as well shes very diplomatic in answering and she tries her best to make an entertaining class.
Typical librarian look...a bun and glasses...tee hee hee...none of less one of the BEST profs! She doesn't talk terribly fast either which is a good thing, her exams aren't tricky, and she's ALWAYS willing to talk during office hours even about other subjects you might need help with. Go Angela!
Great prof!
She's really smart, she sometimes seems a little out there but she knows what she's talking about. She's really picky on details in tests. Easy to take notes in her class, and understandible although, sometimes her explainations don't make much sense.
She makes the class interesting, and if you've got a sense of humour she's hilarious. She does her best at explaining some difficult concepts.
she rocks. sh'es a nice lady and she knows EVERYTHING about that which she teaches. take her classes, learn from her.
Wonderful intelligent prof, a definate asset to catleton!!!
very good prof. I came away from the course with a real interest in eastern religions.
Outstanding prof, completely hilarious, very helpful, a pleasure to meet
easy easy class, m/c exams, and an short assigment, so easy, little borring sometimes, but so funny sometimes!
She's sweet and funny. Her courses are refreshing. I love the way she explains things.
I think she's adorable. The lecture material was a little bit vague at times, but she would often add information that wasn't in her notes to make understandable. I didn't really get a chance to meet her outside of class, but I'm sure I would make the effort if I took another class with her.
Class is a little dull at times, but she's funny and charming in her lectures. Tends to be a lot of reading and unfamiliar concepts, but she puts her lecture notes online, which helps considerably with studying. Don't look for help from TAs, though, as they're uniformly terrible, either not responding to e-mail or not understanding it.
Kind of a maverick, what with the vision quest assignment and all. She's funny, but her lectures can nonetheless be dull. She shines during her Siddhartha lectures. Seems enlightened, but a little "not of this earth". Needs a bit of focus if I remember correctly. A perfectly good professor, with unique approaches, just nothing fantastic.
Cool prof. Not exactly the most stimulating lectures, but certainly charming and funny. Extremely helpful, and certainly cares about her students. If you have the chance to take a class with her, I would suggest it. It's a very unique experience.
pleasure to learn from. i have taken 3 of her classes. lovely, funny, kind. you really feel as though you have learned from someone who knows first hand what she is talking about.
Sweet, Kind, Understanding. An excellent professor. I am proud to have her represent Carleton.

Great class. She has a really quirky sense of humor, and I wish she'd told us more about some of her experiences in India. I went in an agnostic, I came out with some theological questions. Just a really great experience, especially if you're interested in buddhism. She let me in as an overload student, and it was my favorite class of the semester.
Excellent professor, excellent class!
cream of the crop, best prof at carleton, honestly gotta be, fun to listin too, very clear, i want to have her babies
I can say without an ounce of hesitation that I would take any course Sumegi taught. She is an incredibly passionate and kind person whose energy is contagious. Her course has definitely influenced my perception of the world and my own religious beliefs. There is no major that wouldn't benefit from some aspect of her courses. Thank you professor!!!
Great Prof, She can actually make the material interessting and less confusing..fair exams
Fantastic Prof. I just love her side stories and when she takes a couple minutes just to laugh. It's so adorable! The exam was almost insultingly easy, but I really liked that. It meant that I could just sit back and learn from her without too much stress. And learn I most certainly did. She's very energetic and she knows her stuff.
Pretty good course. She is cute, seems very knowledgable, and if not sure she will certainly inquire and inform the following week. Exams are fair. Course can be taken by those without a background in religion, but I would recommend taking it ITV as it is a bit fast paced at times. But overall, very interetsting course!
First I took Intro Buddhism with her and loved her so much a took Death and Afterlife. Great proff. AMAZING sense of humor, great stories and super interesting. Material was clear and exam was fair. Make sure you take good notes and do all the readings however (Lots of questions taken from the readings). I would recommend any classes taught by her
Really good compartive class for those without a background in religion. Prof Sumegi is a cutie, she doesn't take dogmatic religion stuff too seriously, and her exams are very fair (but make sure you do the readings - there isn't a lot of other work to do anyways!)
She is a great prof! Her exams are very straight forward and fair. Her lectures are very interesting. Sometimes the class gets really fast paced. She shows lots of interesting videos and she is very funny! Take her classes!
This lady absolutely glows. She's really enthusiastic... laughs a lot, which some people i spoke to thought was weird and annoying. I thought it was adorable, personally. Exams were very easy. classes covered a lot of info but made it v. straightforward. I definitely want to take more courses with her!
She is awesome and is able to verbalize the most difficult concepts. Religion is hard to explain and she does it very well. Highly recommeded.
Shes the best. I enjoyed her lectures, she keeps you entertained with her stories. She also stays on the topic well and explains everything thoroughly.
Very interesting lady. Death and Afterlife is an interesting course because it examines how different cultures view and carry out death and funeral ceremonies.
This woman is adorable!
horrible. so incredibly boring. never take a class with here unless you have an AMAZING attention span because you'll fall asleep and never want to go to class otherwise. ugh.
She's so nice! I really liked the content of the course so it was interesting to sit through. She never went the full 3 hours, which I think everyone appreciated. She brought in guest speakers as well. Exams are all MC, if you study you can get an A easily. Not a high work load but you should do the readings if you want an A.
Easy class, but really boring lectures.
Cutest woman on the planet! You can't help but laugh along with her when she laughs at her own puns! Overall, class was very interesting, midterm and final were tough, but I'm not a fan of multiple choice either, so you decide. Good pick for an elective:)
Frustrating at times, with awkward material. The midterm is difficult but she goes easy on you with the final. Lectures are enjoyable.
Great prof. Exams aren't to difficult if you pay attention. does what she can to help the students and deserves credit for it. If you need a religion credit then definately take her course no matter what your major.
I love her as a prof and try to take as many of her classes as I can. Her lectures are interesting and she is absolutely adorable - especially since she is always smiling and laughs at herself. You need to attend lectures to do well and be ready to write a lot. Her exams are mc and relatively easy, though some questions come from left field
2nd class with her, and I highly recommend any of her classes. She's one of my favorite profs at Carleton, and no matter what the subject she always makes it interesting. Last lecture was cancelled due to weather, could've used the review as MC exam threw some random Qs which I was unprepared for. Go to lectures, read and get an A.
Very knowledgeable prof. She seems really enthuiastic about what she's teaching. The midterm was kind of difficult, but the final was much easier. If you do the readings, and go to/watch the classes, it makes the exams much simpler, although she does tend to put some really random questions on it.
i really enjoyed this class, which is surprising since religion isn't my thing. This prof is charming with her giggling and random comments. You do need to got to every class...or rent the dvds because her exams we based largely on them, Its easy to get a good mark if you do so. She also seems to care about her students and wants them to do well.
Nice prof, but the midterm was very hard! The final was a little better, but the questions were RANDOM! The class is alright. Take it as an elective if you need it.
Easiest class since grade school. Took through CUTV, didn't have to watch a single "episode". All notes (and answers) were on WebCt. All evaluations were multiple choice! Final exam was under 30 minutes long. The proctors were laughing because most students were done before the 30 minute mark. Perfect elective! Perfect for not attending class.
Exceptional professor. Her kind, positive caring and compassionate disposition only adds to her skillful teaching style. I recommend her so highly that I would go so far to say, it would be to your benefit and in your interest to at least take one of the classes she teaches :)
Her lectures are interesting and her warmth and kindness shines through in her teaching style. Highly recommended!
Awesome prof
Very sweet and kind. Her lectures are interesting and informative. Most of her readings assigned are just for background knowledge, and are not necessary for exams. Her exams are based on the big picture, and fairly easy.
Adorable. I found myself laughing often, because she would always laugh at herself or at things she'd say. Very knowledgable, and she explains things EXTREMELY well. Uses excellent examples to explain difficult concepts. Her midterm was fairly easy. As long as you go to the lectures and do the readings and get the "big picture" you'll do fine

Very interesting lectures, Amazing teacher!!
Very knowledgeable and clear. Her great personality is perfect for this class. Might just be my favorite prof.
Very interesting course. If you liked religion 1000, you'll definitely like this course. She's easy to follow and enjoys the subject. She puts up MOST the notes she reads off of closer to the exam.. but still watch the lectures and take notes. Midterm was easy. Final was a bit harder. T/f very tricky (make sure you read the question VERY carefully)
Great prof; she appreciates straight-forward, honest effort. Long winded "trying to sound intelligent" responses wont impress her. She inspires you to set aside your biases and work to understand the practices of other cultures.
Amazing prof and class, definitely would take another class with her :)
Great proff! Really engaging, solid lecturer, and overall provided a very interesting course. A+ Quality!
Decent prof. Knows what she is talking about and will teach you everything there is to know in the course.
What an awesome course - you will learn so much in her classes. Structure of the course is excellent - can take this as a long-distance course. another very good prof.. I would take another course like this
I went in to the class thinking it would be amazing to learn about death and afterlife. Could have been better didn't learn that great of info. Prof wasn't too clear with what exactly we needed to know. Didn't have slides so it was difficult to concentrate in lectures. Midterm and exam didn't always follow what she said in class.
Angela's lectures were interesting and so was the required textbook, however; when it came to the exam nothing that we had learned in class or told to study was on it. She misguided many of her students and as a result had a high fail rate.
My current class with her is a pleasure to take so far. She presents interesting topics and isn't afraid to divert a little to add cute personal anecdotes. No powerpoint, so not the easiest to follow if you aren't paying attention. She is very helpful and kind if you approach her with questions. I would highly recommend taking a class with her.
I disliked the course, thought it would be interesting, but I was wrong. Sumegi did her best with an anecdotal subject. Midterm did not reflect what was told in class. Overall, okay prof, awful course.
Prof. Sumegi is an awesome, and super helpful prof. Although she may wander off topic, she's incredibly fair and an overall great lecturer.
Highly recommend her. Her attitude is an example to all professors.
A very nice survey course and a knowledgeable and intelligent prof. this year she published her textbook and not only is it a very good read, it's a also a good guide on what to study on the Exam. Recommend it as a bird course.
AVOID LIKE PLAGUE!!! I took this course because it sounded like a compelling bird course but it ended up being my lowest mark thus far! Very interesting material but exams are merely impossible. Class average was 65%. Terrible outcome. AVOID!
Both knowledgeable and passionate. Has an extremely endearing personality and punctuates her lectures with cute stories from her life. Unfortunately, the midterm was unfairly difficult and based on small details from the readings. The exam was very fair. I would strongly recommend a course with her for the entertainment factor at the very least.
Great professor! Talks about some very interesting topics that will keep you engaged.
I took her Buddhism class and it was OK. She goes off on tangents and laughs at her own jokes (which is cute, but not helpful). You pretty much have to learn a new language because her exams are based off of Buddhist vocabulary. But she does tell you what's on the exam, so you can prepare (but there's ALOT covered in exams).
took religion, death and afterlife with her. Some material was interesting. She is a nice lady but I find her boring& go off on tangents. Wording on exams can be off & uncomprehending- class avg was low and she had to add bonus marks so i guess that says it about her exams
Dr. Sumegi is adorable and hilarious. Her class on Buddhism was my absolute favorite course and I looked forward to her lectures every week. I would absolutely take a course with her again. If you are interested in the material and show up to lectures, you will do really really well.
I have had professor sumegi for about 5 courses. Death and after life, Buddhism, Buddhism beyond India, Modern Buddhism movements a fouth year seminar and all i can say is she is an amazing professor. 5 years at carleton and she is definetly my top religion professor . She is extremely helpful and goes out of her way to help students with due dates
Professor Sumegi is an excellent (and funny) lecturer. She has a great amount of knowledge on the subject and it really shows. Altogether fascinating class, well presented.
Great professor. Very helpful and knowledgeable.
THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!! lectures are interesting but the midterm and final is horrible!! Information does not relate to the lecture or textbook. The class average is within the 40s, avoid this class if you can. It might seem like a bird course but it is my lowest grade in university so far!!!
Took Death & Afterlife because I was interested in the subject matter, and it was interesting! But I feel Prof Sumegi could have taught and evaluated it better. Lectures were almost entirely based off the textbook (that she herself wrote), instructions on midtermexam content could have been much clearer, evaluation was just the midterm and exam.
Angela is a great professor. I found every one of her lessons engaging. The exam was entirely based on what she had taught - you can easily score in the 90's if you just listen and take notes. Those who find the class difficult are people who have trouble with lecture style lessons/ verbal learning in gneral. Loved both classes I took with her.
Lecture and textbook heavy. This is NOT a bird course. The exams and MC and they will test your memory. If you want even an A, you will have to read and digest every little fact. Do your readings from the text, lecture slides and online ARES material and make as many notes as possible in class - bring a laptop.
This is the most interest course that I have ever taken in my University career. The course itself is not hard - you just have to pay attention to the in-class lectures and read the textbook attentively. If you have some religion knowledge, you should find the course relatively easy. Its a very good interesting elective.
Angela is nice, knowledgeable and clear in outlining what you need to know. There is only a multiple choice/TF midterm and exam, but it would be easy to do poorly if you didn't do all the readings, watch all the lectures and take good notes. The class is a fair amount of work, so make sure you take time to do everything she says for a solid A.
This is not AN EASY COURSE. This class will boost down your gpa. Do not take this course unless you are very interested in religion.
You HAVE to do the readings. This is not your average bird course that is a fun elective. You have to work for it but she is fair.
Just no. The exam structure is 2 test, each takes up 50%, 90 multiple choice in 3 hours, not hard I know. But with the pandemic going on, the prof didn't show any compassion towards students. she made the final 1.5 hours long, that's 1 minute per question, thanks for the panicking and zero time to review my answers! Take it and regret it.
This professor has a very caring and empathetic disposition. She is passionate ate and knowledgeable. I encourage you to try one of her courses if you have a spark of interest.
