In the beginning she might seem a bit intimidating since she looks young and can seem like she's coming off rude. But she's pretty cool. Easy quizzes and lectures are simple and clear. Alright teacher overall.
Professor Yanez is very sweet. She's there for anyone who needs help of any sort. She passionate in her lectures and makes it interesting. There is 5 quizzes mid term and the final exam throughout the semester.
Her powerpoint bullet points are super long and she expects you to write everything. She won't post them online either so if you don't take notes you're screwed. She makes you print stuff and won't use them in class so just read the stuff online, don't waste your money. Pro, we take quizzes instead of tests. Overall she's just okay.
Overwhelming note taking (lecture notes, article notes, reading novel notes, video notes) Down side: her PowerPoint bullets were more like paragraphs. Bright side: we take quizzes instead of tests, 1 midterm & final, goes over answers. She is very knowledgeable & passionate about her subject. Makes you actually use your brain & analyze stuff.
Not professional at all. Goes on feminist rants. Makes stuff up as she goes. Lazy. Most classes she just shows movies. The few times she lectures she is unprepared and talks very uneducated. Has students grade the "quizzes" which are ridiculous. Passionate about CS yet mostly conspiracy theories.
She focuses more on the female point of view of Chicano history. PowerPoints are very long. Tests are confusing. I would never take her again. She's a chill person, just her teaching style/method is not great. Needs to be more specific & to the point. Not gonna lie I was miserable in that class.
Proffessor Yanez was a tough grader she talks for most of the class period, her tests are confusing and if you skip class you wont pass
I am taking professor Yanez for CS 101 and really like her. Is she a little tough? Yes. Remember this is college though. If she just passed everyone along, she would not be doing her job. Remember to read and you will do fine. She is also very pretty and seems like a fun person to hang out with.
This teacher is so amazing! I usually do not like history, but she changed my mind I took her class two times cs 101 and 102. Her class is interesting. The method that she uses to teach us is clear and she is always open to answer our questions, can be during class, after, office hours or via email she will always help us
I really enjoyed her class and her lectures were very interesting! Her class was easy, just read the articles and take good notes. She puts power points up during the lectures and the information on it, is on the quiz's. She is very nice and lets you use notes, and articles on the quiz's. For a college class I thought it was an easy grade!
Professor Yañez is an amazing person. I had the perspective from a Chicana who knows the real truth. Her lectures are simple and interesting. If you're not passionate about Chican@ history this is not the class for you. It was hard, a bit, but this is college. You want an easy grade? You want to waste your time? She is professional and hilarious.
Im very disappointed in how this turned out. Professor yanez is ignorant to be polite. She speaks of developing a sense of spirituality from the class. i believe that i have and i didn't even have the mandatory personal experience required on the exams about colonial oppression... take someone else.
Professor Yanez is an amazing teacher. She not only teaches from the perspective of historical struggles, but she also teaches about current events. Taking her class greatly opened my eyes to the injustice that is seen to Chicano people in general. I strongly recommend taking her class. It'll be an experience you won't ever forget.
She is a nice teacher and very passionate about cs. Her lectures are interesting but writes paragraphs and moves to fast her test are pretty easy but you have to read what she assigns. Lectures can get boring because they are long but are very interesting
She opened my eyes to the racism and discrimination indigenous people face. She connects the past with the present and explains how the topics she discusses are still relevant to this day. Her lectures are repetitive but for a good reason. They emphasize they point she is trying to make. She gives in class and take home quizzes that I consider easy
I have taken Dr. Yanez' for the past 3 semesters. I am so happy I did! She is super friendly, approachable, she keeps it real. It is a great class to be in. She goes into depth about all of her topics and if you READ you will be fine. I would take her classes again if I could!
Take someone else if possible, didnt learn much all semester and doesn't really teach and just shows movies throughout the semester. Very lazy, ignorant, unprepared and grades tough but doesn't give good feedback. Avoid like a plague.
Plays music during tests and its distracting. Also doesn't use the proper vocabulary to explain her points in lecture!
Take someone else if possible. Has a temper and can be rude. Like others said she doesn't really put effort in her lectures. She spells "you" as "U" & "to"as "2" which is annoying.
She confusing. would NOT take her class again!
Professor Yañez is amazing! I like how she connects the past to the present in her lectures. She's always willing to help explain any questions during office hours and after class as well. As long as you read and take good notes you'll pass the class!!
Please do not take this class. Gives no feedback. I don't feel as if I received the education that I need for Chicano Studies
Im shocked with everyones comments!Dr. Yanez is an awesome professor. She makes the lectures interesting and on top of that she has a great sense of humor. You just have to show up to class, pay attention, and do your work. It was a super easy class with extra credit opportunities and will be taking 102 with her next semester.
I am so sad this was my final semester with Dr. Yáñez! I have had such an amazing experience with her. She was always very open when I needed help and would encourage to come visit her during office hours. Dr. Yáñez is profesional and explains all her lectures in great detail! Would take again if I could! There is a lot of reading so get ready!
Prof. Yanez is a great professor. She is very passionate about her lectures and makes it very relatable. She also gives a lot of outside extra credit. 10/10 would take again.
She grades three quizzes, one midterm, and one final. I wouldn't recommend skipping class because the information on her lectures appear on the midterm and final. She is a great professor but the answers to some of her questions can be confusing because she does not specify what the correct answer is during her lectures.
She's a good teacher just show up and do the work. Really interesting and an easy A. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Take it you won't regret it.
Took Prof Yanez for both CS 101 & 102. Both classes easy A. 3 quizzes (some are take home or group quizzes), 1 midterm, 1 final, and plenty of extra credit.
If you do the work you will pass. I love professor Yanez personality!
Take any other course besides Chicano studies on this campus!
Dr. Yañez is very caring and doesn't discourage anyone. She has extra credit opportunites. There are 3 quizzes(take home, group) based on the readings/notes. 1 midterm and 1 final. I got a C on one quiz and managed to pass the class with an A. She does expect the take home quiz to be specific but gives examples. Reading is on your own. Take her!!!!!
Don't take this class!
no me gusto esta clase
Conveys the material clearly, show up to every class and you will do good in the course. Great personality, would recommend!
Dr. Yanez, is passionate about C.S, which makes her very knowledgable and clear with her lectures and encourages questions that lead to meaningful discussions. Dr. Yanez's passion goes beyond her C.S class. For example, she is the adviser for MEChA and supports students in all aspects in order for students to be successful. A true gem indeed.
Professor Yanez is very passionate about what she teaches. You can tell she is a Motivated chicana who is proud of her heritage and tries to share it with the rest of the student body. I loved her lectures because she always gave her students a voice and a chance to speak their minds on any topic. Highly recommend! Amador De La Cruz was here(:
This class is very easy. Do your work and study and you'll get an A for sure.
What I loved about professor YANEZ were how real and deep the lectures were, and the reading ; The readings were very informative and books read through the semester were very good books. Not only were you learning something new everyday but the information taught is what is really going on in society
Worst professor I've met, in over 20 classes. I copied and pasted this review, as this every word matches my experience: Take someone else if possible. Has a temper and can be rude. Like others said she doesn't really put effort in her lectures. She spells "you" as "U" & "to"as "2" which is annoying. Do yourself a favor. Do not take this prof.
Professor Yanez is a Chicana dedicated to her students. She tries to get the students to put the theory she teaches into practice by doing events outside the classroom. Yanez lectures a lot but reinforces her lectures by constantly coming back to past course material and weaves it all together. I definitely recommend taking her classes! -I.B.
She is very biased in her lectures, some stuff you may disagree with but just go along to get that A. Takes forever to grade assignments. Her test are confusing, both midterm and Final are 100 questions. You have to use 2 books. There are articles online to read, which are REALLY long. If you have the chance take it with another professor.
I Love professor Yañez!!!!!!! She is very Beautiful, Awesome, Sweet, Super Kind, Polite, Loving, Caring, Very Respectful, Very Honest, Intelligent and the Best Teacher
Best Chicano studies teacher ever. She really knows what shes talking about and is very passionate about the culture and is the sweetest person ever when you need help.
Dr. Yanez is amazing. A lot reading and weekly quiz taking. She provides feedback to discussions and assist in anyway she can. Read, pass the quizzes equals passing the class.
She really cares about her students , probably one of the funniest teachers I've had. For once I actually liked being in a history class, lectures are in dept and she knows how to teach.I had to take another class with her because of that .
Lots of hw participation matters show up everyday and on time
Took this class over the summer. Weekly responses required. Was balanced between reading and videos. Very informative.
Dr. Yanez is really passionate about this class. I can tell she wants her students to really understand the history of Chican@. Every week is laid out for you, what you are expected to read, videos to watch, and if there is a quiz. Read & you WILL pass(Be ready to Read!) She makes this course quite easy to follow online. I recommend!
Best Chicano studies professor, very down to earth and friendly. Its important be present for lectures.
I took the online course which was a really easy A. She has her own book, buy it. All answers to quizzes are in her book or the modules she gives. Highly recommend, you can retake quizzes till you get a good grade. Really easy A.
A LOT of reading && will call you out in front of everyone
Shes a great Chicano studies professor!!! She has a lot of reading assignments and honestly aint nobody got time for that. She offers a lot of credit but the information she gives out gets a little repetitive. Ive had her for CS 100,101 and 102 and it was always the same things over and over. The final is pretty easy Easy A HARD TO FAIL
she is a great professor, you do have to read her book yet you will find the answers to the weekly quizzes in the text. if you do the readings you will get an A. A lot of the stuff is repetitive yet informative. good class!!
Hello! I just finished my first ever Chicano Studies class with Professor Dr. Yanez and wow she opened my eyes! She is a woke, young Mexican-American teacher who feels like your tia during lecture. She is someone you can talk to whether its about school work or something personal. The class has a lot of information so be ready to be focused!
This is so far the worst online class I have taken during college. i never fully understood her grading criteria, i never got more than an 8 on the discussion boards even thought i tried to meet the specified criteria she uses, quizzes were confusing, all answers looked the same, you cant go back to the answers on the quizzes which makes it hard
Professor Yáñez was incredibly you can tell she researches her lectures and does a good job educating her students. She can be strict but as long as you show up and pay attention you will pass.
The topics are interesting, but she posts assignments halfway through the week along with the lecture. This is something that I do not like because then I had to rearrange my schedule since each week's work varies. As well, she takes forever to grade assignments. As interesting as the class is I would not take it again.
I had this professor for the first 3 weeks of school. Followed all her rules but she kept giving me 5 out of 10 on the discussion boards. I was always the first student to submit along with thorough and detailed answers, yet she still scored me low. When I messaged her about it she told me to stop complaining and to drop her class... SO I DID!
The WORST. She had me waiting on the lecture the full time since it was locked. I wasted my time, which I dropped shifts for to be there. She tells how she doesn't like when students make her do her job the full time we pay for. She tells about how other students complain too much, yet when it comes time for her to work she's no were to be found.
I failed almost every single quiz related to her book. She writes the questions in a way that just doesn't make sense at all and if you let her know that the questions are difficult to understand she will redirect you to reread her book. Also discussion boards, I am required to write more in this class than in my English courses. It was a mess.
Professor Yanez' course was mostly based off reading and listening comprehension. She is a harsh grader who requires quite a bit of writing each week in response to the course material. These assignments were very time consuming, which made the class feel more like a writing class. I would not recommend Professor Yanez to the next student.
Beware! She is a tough grader and assigned a ton of homework. Plan on 30 hours a week of homework for a C+ if you're lucky. Find a different professor.
All the bad reviews on here are made by lazy and unmotivated people. This professor pours her heart and soul into her classes. Just like any class, there is goin to be reading, homework, and test! Shocking I know! If you need extensions, she will understand. You cant make it to class? she will understand Her textbooks are cheap, lectures r powerful
How would anyone rate her class as awful! She is the best. Will go to hell and back for you to succeed. If you fail that is on you, not her! Just be ready to participate, read, and do the work! easiest A ever if you just pay attention. You will come out of her classes a better person than when you walked in. Take her in person class if possible!
Honestly, one of the worst and most uninspiring professors at Palomar. She's openly confrontational, inconsiderate, and unsympathetic. Just take this course with another professor. Your sanity and GPA will thank you.
Breaks my heart to see so many people say such bad things about Professor Yanez. She is elite! The best professor on campus.
I really enjoyed this class because of Professor Yanez. I feel like I learned a lot from the different readings and surprisingly the textbook. I don't understand how she can have any negative feedback and she's probably the most positive teacher I've ever had. I took the 8 week course and it consisted mainly of quizzes and discussion boards.
She is a great professor because she knows her stuff.
She goes more in depth with in class lectures. She really want's you to understand what you read. She has easy home work and can use your book to answer questions. Definitely would take another class with her.
Very specific in what she wanted you turn in, anything more or less she would take off points. You have to buy her book or else you won't be able to answer most of her tests. I believe she required you to have a profile picture with your face clearly showing in order for her to acknowledge or grade your posts. Tests are ridiculous.
she literally took points off each of my assignments because my profile picture was a mirror selfie._. she's petty for that & if you're one sentence short she cuts your grade in half, would not take it again, I wanted to enjoy this class but her overload of work made it unenjoyable
This professor is very passionate about the Chicanx culture and it shows in lectures, in readings, in videos. Although I took an online class which was asynchronous, she would set up and invite all her students to participate in events that delved further into the culture, all extra credit opportunities. Goes beyond to provide fun material!
Do not take this professor for Chicano Studies. I repeat, DO NOT TAKE HER! The amount of readings and videos and lectures is absurd. Requires a ridiculous amount of writing and effort for her class. Very confusing outlay on canvas, Save yourself the sanity, take with another professor.
Never-ending work. An extremely unnecessary amount of reading and writing, especially for a 100-level class many are forced to take because of degree requirements. It would be understandable if we were majoring in the subject, but we are not. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
Professor Yanez goes above and beyond to try to help you throughout the course. She was very caring and understanding when I had a medical situation going on. I highly recommend taking her course, you'll learn a lot. She is down to earth, which keeps the class fun and energetic.
Yanez was the worst professor. I have ever had. She was openly confrontational and rude when I suggested a discrepancy with her class. I was told if I don't like it then to drop the class and that she can make it harder. This is not an admirable attitude of an educator. I feel that my time was wasted and didn't learn anything, DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
Professor Yanez teaches with passion and is down to earth. She is understanding and caring. In my personal experience one of the best professors I've had.
I learned more in this class than any other class I've taken. Yanez is passionate about Chicano Studies, which enables students to learn about deep topics relating to Chicano Studies. I would take this course again, she was respectful, fair, responded timely to emails, very interesting topics, and was willing to work with me during an emergency.
I have recommended my friends to take this Professor because she is so great! If you have any questions about anything she is ready to be there for you and answer anything. If you follow the instructions she gives you, you'll do great! She also responds really quickly her messages, so that is a huge help. Her lectures are really easy to understand!
Dr. Yanez is an awesome professor, and I would highly recommend taking her for any Chicano Studies course! She gives great insight and feedback on assignments and has always answered any questions I had. She also cares a lot for her students and if you put in the effort, you will do well in her class!
exceptional teacher who addresses tough topics like colonialism, race, and etc. She makes complex issues understandable and fosters meaningful discussions. She ensures respect and critical engagement, and highlights the importance of these conversations for understanding history and current realities.
I love taking this class with Dr. Yanez. She is amazing! Her quizzes are multiple choice and homework is easy as long as you do the reading and follow her directions. There is alot of reading, but it is all informative. She gives feedback so that is very nice. Just communicate with her and the class will go smoothly. Looking forward to taking CS102
I just took the 8-week-long Chicano Studies 101 course and it was amazing! I truly learned so much and enjoyed being in their class. There was a discussion post per week, 1 or 2 quizzes, and a chapter/articles/videos to watch for your quiz and discussion post. I was able to balance the course and 2 other classes(3 units) while working full-time! :)
There is reading and quizzes but if the material is read quizzes are pretty straight forward. Ms. Angelica was accessible and worked with me. I would take this class again with her.
Awesome teacher ! Instructions were clear and material was easy to follow !
Just would never take her class again.
Professor Yanez's class is straight forward and easy. As long as you do the readings and watch the lectures, you will understand the quizzes and discussions. She is very easy to talk to, super nice. She gives great feedback. It was a very interesting class as well! I would definitely recommend taking her class for CS if you have the chance.
I really enjoyed the class! I took the 8 week course a long side another class while working full time in the military and it was very doable. She would often give us an extra date to submit quizzes and discussions. I do recommend investing in her book, it helped a lot. Overall, it was a great class and I learned a lot!
Shes awful, super one-side. Claims everything wrong in our lives is “cus we're brown and the Anglos oppress us”. She'll ask for your opinion but if you don't agree with her shell mark it wrong. Lecture is from 2020 and uses statistics from 1990 or 2006. No up to date researches. Her xtra credit is crashing a class she uses to promote her book
I really DONT like this professor. She is extremely one sided and definitely plays favorites in her class. Her homework assignments are RIDICULOUS, you need to write 2-3 paragraphs PER question for the discussions every week, thats more than my English class.I thought she was cool and funny in the beginning but after some recent classes not anymore
There is a lot of reading but the books are enjoyable and you can find them cheap on Ebay. The discussions are graded really tough with zero explanation as to why she knocked off points. She also requires 2 paragraphs to answer questions that should be one sentence answers so you're kind of forced to word vomit.
Coming from a white female, I felt unwelcome in this class. Professor Yanez has a tendency to integrate her personal politics into lecture discussions and quizzes, and you'll be docked points if your answer doesn't fit her personal opinions. I felt like I was walking on eggshells the entire semester so I could get a passing grade. Don't recommend.
I had to spend $200 on a textbook that she wrote and I was graded based on if I agreed with her opinion on things. Docks points on discussions if she disagrees with your point of view. The extra credit was laughable, as a promotion for her book so she can make more money off of already broke college students. Find someone else
This was eye opening ! Professor Yanez is knowledgeable and compassionate. I can see why some students have personal trouble with the material it's not an average history. It's a balanced view about colonial violence enacted in the Americas. I feel this knowledge was life changing and would take more classes with her. Don't listen to the haters!
I absolutely enjoy Dr. Yanez! She is an empowering professor. I am a single parent, and I was able to manage this class. There is just so much information to learn, these courses need to be offered in a full semester. This is a fast-track class and it is important to manage your time accordingly in order to stay on track. Positive impact in my life!
There will be many videos youll have to watch including movies. but they are fundamental in teaching you about the subject. Her work is clear and her syllabus is clear. she is against enforcing deadlines on her students and will often give them extra time. But don't let that make you think you can not take it seriously. She is amazing, take her!!!!
Dr. Yanez, made the class simple with clear direction! She sets up the expectation, and makes it easy enough to go through the semester at your pace with fair deadlines. She is also very passionate about what she is teaching! I am super happy and grateful having taken her class! 10/10 recommend!! :)
Very passionate professor .Inspirational content. I took her course online. Has very clear expectations. She is very personable. Lectures are a BALANCED mix of text reading, engaging videos, and short scholarly articles. If you take her online expect weekly discussions. Just do your work. She wants to see you succeed!
The professor, who is beyond entitled, remember to call her Dr! She even assigned a poorly written book (by her) for the course, likely to profit from it. Ignore the fake reviews, avoid the frustration, and pick a different class…. it's not worth your time.
Dr. Yanez is passionate and well-educated on this topic. She really cares about what she teaches and it made me care about what she was teaching. Some of the subjects are hard to grapple with but that's just because they matter.
I took Chicano perspect l over the summer if your looking for class for just credit and not willing to care for the context of the class I wouldn't recommend it but if you genuinely care about learning the context of the material then ur grade will be a reflection of it. Angélica M. Yañez, is caring and passionate about her class.
She makes you buy her book just to boost her own sales, grades based on personal opinion, and acts like she's teaching at an Ivy League. You're better off taking a different class or professor. And don't forge….. she's not a professor, she's a doctor.
Tough grader who grades based on personal opinion. Best advice to skip this course. Good luck
Pretty chill class and teacher. Just do your readings, watch some documentaries, and give thoughtful responses to the assignment questions and you'll be good.
This was an amazing class. As a Latinx student, I thought I understood my culture and the struggles Chicano people face, but Professor Yanez's research revealed so much hidden history. This course completely changed my perspective and deepened my appreciation for my heritage. id take this class again and again.
This is one of my favorite classes I've ever taken. It goes beyond surface-level history and reveals hidden narratives that shape our culture today. Professor Yanez's research makes the experience powerful and unforgettable. I still think about this class. 100/10
This professor is a tough grader, doesn't communicate well as far as how she expects discussion posts. She'll mark off any little thing to deduct points. If you aren't spending enough time to her standards on the material she marks points off as well and doesn't tell you
She assigns 3 hours of material that you have to watch. This isn't my only class and you're assigning 3 hours of videos and then I have to write 6 paragraphs on all those different topics. I was genuinely interested in getting ready to learn about Chicano history but she ruined it for me.
She is a tough grader with discussions that are heavy.. it takes a long time to turn in. Discussions are definitely heavy to finish. One good thing I will say is to reach out to her to give you extensions for assignments. Her lectures are LONG, videos are long for the discussions.
feminist teacher grading like she actually loves to see women fail. Not the worst class but definitely not good.
The course material was engaging, and I enjoyed some of the readings and videos. Communication and assignment scheduling could be improved. One assignment was posted several days later than expected and had a short deadline.
