For Focal Point on Taoism.. by far my worst teacher experience to date. Inflexible, unclear, and sometimes downright mean. Too much irrelevant material. Too much reading. Don't take.
Cedzich is the fallen Taoist genius of germany. If you are ready to strain your neck and learn a thing or two about the more obscure and ritualistic aspects of Taosim, by all means take her class. Take an intro to eastern religion before takign her
You don't understand what she says because she has a heavy accent. Her notes and lecture are very unorganized. The assigned readings (there is a lot) is irrevelant to the course. One of the worst teachers at DePaul.
Teacher has thick German accent-makes her very hard to understand. On Academic Board and reviews plagarism cases-very anal about EVERYTHING-if you choose to take her be careful with your words. Scans all papers-busts at least 10 kids per class
worst teacher at depaul...thick german accent-ends every sentence w/ yah...if you want to fail or get a bad grate take her course. NOTE: SHE SCANS ALL HER PAPERS LOOKING TO BUST PEOPLE FOR PLAGARISM. GOOD LUCK
Do not take her if you want to get an A or a B in class b/c you will have to bust your ass off!! She assigns way too much reading and she is very unclear. Also, watch out for plagarism because she scans all of your papers!!! If you are taking her, drop it

She is very nice and very willing to help. She has an accent, but if you're paying attention in class you'll have no problem understanding her. Write clearly, succintly, and originally and she grades well. Not for slackers.
STAY AWAY!!! IF you have taken to time to read what student have to say about professors so you can choose decent ones takes everyones advice--don't take this one. Way too much work, and way too much difficult reading. Not worth your 10 weeks!
Very unpredictable, UNFAIR and difficult to understand. I learned nothing in her class, it was an absolute waste of time! I suggest you stay far away.
don't do it. Stay away. Learn from those that have suffered before.
Hard to understand, in her own world. Wears bizarre outfits such as bright green in contrast to her red hair. Her lecture are boring, grading is harsh, but in the end she is curves. Easily one of the worst teachers at DePaul.
TERRIBLE!!! (...enough said)
If you are a hard worker, take this class because you will learn a lot. However, if you are a slacker, don't take it because this class is not for slacker. This class requires a lot of works. Personally, I think she is nice.
everyone was right. stay away
Horrible teacher, explains nothing and expect way too much reading and work and is too tough of a grader. STAY AWAY
Do not take this teacher if you care about you grades and GPA stay away. you don't learn anything in class she pretends to be nice. she assigns tons of readings, and do not even think about using something from books in your papers. just stay away......
She is kind of hard to understand with her accent. Work consists of lots of term papers and quizzes. Attendance is mandatory. Way too much reading!
I made the mistake of going to this site after the course was over. Please for the love of God DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HER COURSES! If you care about your GPA and your sanity don't do it.
every other word out of her mouth is "yah" she sounds like arnold schwarzenager if you are not as obsessed as she is with japanese or chinese culture good luck she has unrealistic goals for students with no prior east asian studies experience
She is not an easy teacher to understand, and if she doesn't like you, not an easy teacher to get along with. You can learn alot from this class though, and she is very knowledgable in her field. If you're looking for easy, stay away.
HORRIBLE! I had to interview someone 4 a paper and she gave me a C and said I made it up. puhlease! Also she wanted us to hand in our notes to be graded. Wasnt clear on what she wanted. If your not chinese do not take this daaamn class. Has Favorites! |-|
ANyone who says she is nice is insane. She stopped a girl in the middle of a presentation berated her in front of the class and made the girl cry!! enough said

had her for daoism, was impossible to follow expect us to know way to much goin in before hand even though this is an isp and was not helpful at all was mean and beligerent and was completey unfair interms of her understanding and our attempt tounderstand
This lady has serious mental issues. I had a lot of interest in the subject, but I hated the class because of her. She is disrespectful toward students and very unfair when it comes to grading.
She expecs alot of reading if you miss classes she trats you different says yah every second alot of reading and has favorites mostly the chinese people in the class
she's not THAT BAD people. It IS a lot of reading AND you have to take notes, BUT keep in mind: two quizzes, one paper, take home exams due in 1 wk.and discussions that you only have to read for and just keep questions in mind (she doesn't collect it). tske her if you like a challenge
I have had all A's in my other class and had to drop her class becuase it would have lowered my GPA. DON'T TAKE HER!!!!!! She is sweet as pie but hard as steal. For the love of God do not take her. It will bring nothing but stress and heveck on your life.
A nightmare! She expects you to know everything about the subject beforehand; I guess she doesn't know that we take classes to LEARN not to show what we already know!! Has favorites! Very high schoolish. Hard grader. Her class is rediculous & a total waste of time! AVOID FOR UR SANITY's & GPA's SAKE!
Terrible. Not even helpful and unclear accent. If you love blackboard then she is your teacher.
She is such a #$^&%&% !!!!! I had to miss class due to a family thing and because of it i missed a pop quiz which brought my grade down a whole letter grade and when I came to her for help she didn't give it to me! She sucks.
She's not too bad, but she is very unclear in her questioning. She'll ask a broad question and expect a specific answer. She tends to call on people who are obviously having difficulty with the subject. A lot of reading, 4 books total. I wouldn't recommend this class, but it could be worse.
Annoying teacher...she says "yeah?" twice every sentence cause she is German or something. It is hard to concentrate on the lecture when all she says is "yeah?" Anyways, good class, bad teacher.
She is one of the WORST teachers I have ever had-and not just at DePaul. Her accent makes it very difficult to understand her. She loves to interrupt people and make them feel stupid. Also, she posted all our info on Blackboard, but didn't update it nearly enough, only confusing things. Avoid her!
One of the most difficult teachers to understand. She is very insulting and hard grader. She says yah.. about 200 times in one class. Very rude and hard all around. Not very helpful neither.
Very unhelpful, very unclear (german). She knows what she is thinking but cannot convey her thoughts at all to the class. she makes it extremely uncomfortable to speak in class.she always answers your comments with questions like "how" or "why" or "explain more." do not take any casses from her.
This professor is obnoxious, hard to understand, and unhelpful. Worst teacher I've had at DePaul. The class is way too hard for a 200 level course. Trust me, don't take her for anything.
Unless you're a Japanese major, don't take her. She knows her stuff, but she's very unclear. Readings were long, and she doesn't let you know what you should pay attention to - which hurts when the pop quizzes come about. Is closed-minded when it comes to literary interpretation.
Do not take this crazy *****, her class is horrible. She's a nut case, the class is way too hard to be a 200 level course. She already expected that you should know something about chinese religion coming into the class. If DePaul ever has a hostile takeover she needs to be the first to go.
Yeah......just don't do it.

shes a bi*ch. i hated her class. she is dumb. if you ask her a question she doesn't speak good english so she never ansers what you ask her. she answers her own question.
shes dumb. i hate her. college is awesome but goiogn in her class is back to high school. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH THIS TEACHER
Very sweet. Really wants people to learn, but the topic is actually really difficult. DO THE READINGS & SHOW UP TO ALL CLASSES. You should do good and she really is very nice
Nice but hard to understand at times. She knows the material, just hard for her to explain it sometimes. Not a bad class, i learned a lot.
I took this class thinking that I was going to learn about Buddhism, instead I was forced to learn sanskrit, not even the English translation helps you study. The work is way too intensive for a 100-level course and how many times can someone reguritate information and still not know the real meaning of "nirvana"!
I found her assignments unclear. I even went to her office to speak with her about an upcoming paper and I left more confused than before I went. TIP if you take her class: all quizzes are on Sanskrit words(usually3) so study them and ask a lot of decently though out questions and you'll become her favorite.
she is a very nice lady, but expects way too much for a 100 level class. she talks a whole lot and there are a TON of readings.
This is by far one of the worst classes out of my 4 years here. There is way too much work and reading for a 100 level class. Its very difficult to grasp the concepts having students teach the material. She expects the students in class to teach the material to the other students instead of teaching it herself. Very Bad Teacher.
I believe all my classmates would have same idea about her. I am warnning you, Stay away from her!!! she's the WORST prof. ever at depaul. BORING, UNHELPFUL, UNCLEAR LECTURE!!! it' just buddhism class, what does she expect from us?????
Way to much work for a 100 level class. I'm a bio major, and this buddism class taught by her is the hardest class I have this quarter, and that includes Calculus, organic chem, microbio. I mean something is not right about that.
I'm sorry... citing sources on a quiz? how many different ways can you describe the same thing?
this class is a joke. the class was full on the 1st day of class. more than half the class dropped since then, and now there is only 4-6 heads left. obviously that tells u something about the professor. i should have dropped the class when i had a chance. she expects waaay too much work, both inside and outside the classroom...not realistic AT ALL!!
if you value sleep, stay away!! she will literally make you want to yank your hair out. dont think you can escape class without giving any insights to the readings. she will call on you and will then proceed to say, can you explain some more? why? how? uuugh, shuddup already!! she makes you feel stupid.
I still don't understand why depaul still keep her. let her go!!!! WORST AND HORRIBLE CLASS!!! she's unhelpful and boring.
This lady is crazy. I hear her saying ya in my sleep, and she is way too vague with her assignments and explanations, I question her understanding of the Buddhist philosophy and her knowledge of the subject she teaches.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! You've been warned
Um yeah...if you don't feel like working your butt off in this class, then DO NOT take it. I really did enjoy the subject matter of this class, but I would suggest maybe finding around professor to take this class with. Prof. Cedzich is very hard to understand and does not explain things very well. This class is just has TONS of homework.
She is an awesome professor!!! She is so knowledgable about the topic and you will learn a lot here. Make sure you don't fall behind on the readings and participate as much as possible. I will agree that this class is not an easy A
I think people are being harsh. I did less than half of the readings, said something once every class, paid attention mostly, and did fine. The "work" people are referring to was three study guides, which are just answers to questions on the reading. 3 quizzes, no tests, one final paper. She was clear with all of her requirements on the syllabus.
I also think they are being too harsh. It is an intense class, with a lot of work. But if you put the effort in, you'll enjoy they class. There were great discussions and she was very knowledgable about the material. Yes, she's foreign, but her accent is not so hard that you can't understand her. I had a great time in this class.
This lady is kinda nice.. She is willing to listen, to you but you will not give you any slack.. You have to turn paper on line, and if you are a second late too bad... The topic is decent, but you got to read over and over to understand it..Get ready to work!!
I honestly don't see people's problem. She's not a terribly easy grader, but she tells you everything she wants up front and none of it's unreasonable. She "requires" study guides every class, but only collects 3 and tells you which ones - so don't do the rest. AND she's intelligent, helpful and extremely knowledgeable about her topic.
Though her class requires a lot of work, and it takes a while to adjust to her method of teaching/asking questions, she gives you study guides with everything you'll need to know for class/tests. Make sure you DO THE STUDY GUIDES before every class- it will make your life SOO much easier.
love this class =)
she gives u tons and tons of work, i wanted to take this cuz it seemed interesting but its like work everyday and its not easy and she is always expecting 110% from you i got sick of the class already the second week. if you want to take a religon and shes the teacher you should most definitely look for a different class, or atleast a diff teacher.
Not an extremely hard class. You have to work very hard and do the required readings. As for homework it is suggested that you do the study guides before each class. There are 2 formal submissions of study guides, 4 quizes and a final paper. Class is very interesting and don't but off the final paper. Get it done as soon as possible.
THis is the worst Professor. I have never dropped a class in my life and this is the first one. I thought it would be interesting but it was a regular boot camp. She is not a good teacher, that is that. If you see her, run the other way. She shouldn't be teaching in America, she should go back to germany and maybe that will help her out.
She is not a good teacher. She even tells you she is a hard teacher, but it makes no sense to be difficult for the sake of being difficult. She doesn't try to instill any interest in the course, and expects you to love everything and know it inside and out. Also, she is never wrong so don't try to argue with her, it's always your fault.
I can't fathom why anyone wouldn't like this woman. She wants you to learn and makes class extremely interesting and inspiring. Do the homework, open your brains a fraction wider than the norm - and it will be a life-changing learning experience. Yeah, you will have readings for every class - they're not extensive, get over it. Welcome to college.
This woman is absolutely unqualified to teach. Her lesson plans is complete rubbish, and was obviously not developed with actual students in mind. This has been a total waste of my time. The literature used and the viewpoints they express have not been relevant in nearly 40 years. Do NOT take her classes unless you need to to graduate.
She is sweet, I don't know what everyone's problem is.... Not the easiest class but you will learn a lot. I would definately recomend her.
If you have a busy schedule DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. She is very vague in the assignments; I'm still finding little things that I was supposed to do that I didn't even know about. I should have dropped this class when I had the chance. For a 200 level course this was way too much work. I don't think she's a horrible person though. She's pretty nice.
Professor Cedzich is a very kind and intelligent woman. She is very passionate about what she teachers, and will lecture the whole class period. All the material is very interesting, but her standards are extremely high for assignments. This is a difficult class, so I suggest it if you are willing to put a lot of effort and interest in it.
she is very nice, but it is a difficult class. She wants you to do well, but has very high standards. Explain everything you write very very clearly and completely! She is very passionate about what she teaches, but difficult to understand often (and not just because of her accent, though with the asian words, it is difficult sometimes).
Chooses very interesting subject material for class and is enthusiastic. Communicates general ideas well, but a bit convoluted with more complex ones. Expects more out of her students than your average 200-level course, probably. You'll actually have to read the texts and think about them to do well, perish the thought.
honestly, worst class i have EVER taken. it was extremely boring and wayyy too much work. Her grading is totally ambiguous, and expects everything to be absolutely perfect. If you're interesting in the subject, you'll enjoy it. but if you are considering taking this class just to fulfill the religious traditions requirement, DO NOT.
This class is a lot of work. I was so interested in Buddhism until I took her class! For a group project we communicated through email because Blackboard wasn't working and she gave us a D for not using Blackboard! One of my least favorite professors!!
Perish the thought? Ok, I have to wonder if I know you in real life. Shes AWESOME but you will work your butt off so slackers beware! Can you tell that she was meant to teach beyond the survey course level? OF COURSE! But that's DePaul's fault not hers. If you love precommunist China and I DO then you will adore her. I do wish we'd discuss more..
Tough, but in a good way. You need to have a personality (she likes people unafraid to speak up). If you think this is an easy class to pick up the RD requirement, check elsewhere. If you actually want to LEARN something, she's a great prof. Interesting stuff. Highly recommended, for those who actually want to learn something.
This was my hardest class of the quarter, but I definitely learned a lot. The work pays off, and if you put in a good effort your grade will definitely reflect. She is very passionate about what she teaches, which shows. I found her to be very helpful.
She expects WAY too much out of you for a 200 level class. Grades ruthlessly. She is completely incomprehensible while lecturing; she will jump all over the place and spend all of your time talking about things that are not helpful to the class- and attendance is mandatory!! She'll roll her eyes if you don't know the answer. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Worst teacher I have ever had period. I did all the readings and the study guides, but I am still geting a poor grade. Nothing seems to help, she just says to try harder but, I honestly don't know what more I can do. The quizes are confusing and the teacher is no help. Avoid at all cost.
Don't take this teacher. She treats the class like we are middle schoolers but expect us to perform as well as professors. She calls on you at random when you aren't paying attention and then will deliberately ignore you when you have your hand is raised. You just can't win.
This class is hard work but you will definitely learn if you so choose to. She expects a lot of her students. However, because some students at DePaul are spoiled, lazy, and somewhat mentally challenged they complain.
Dr. Cedzich knows her stuff and you will learn from her, like it or not. She has very high expectations of preparedness, so bear that in mind. She liked me, but there were times when other students would get reprimanded for no reason. Overall, if you love the subject and have the time to put in the work, she's great. If not, try another class.
This class was horrible. The Buddhist experience is supposed to be a basic introductory course to the religion. I am in another "experience" religion course that is so much better. She expects you to just understand it immediately. Her directions are HORRIBLE. Just avoid this course if you don't know anything about buddhism
She's terrible. Worst teacher I've ever had. I'm okay with a heavy German accent, but when you can't even give clear instructions for anything there's a problem. Then she acts as if it's your fault, guilt tripping you, and you should feel bad. Her workload is insane, and her grading is harsh. I've never been so confused in a class before...
Honestly the worst teacher I have ever taken. The class seemed very interesting but lectures were completely unorganized. Constantly calls on people at random so better know your stuff or be prepared to be ridiculed in front of everyone. Expects you to know the textbook like the back of your hand and grades very harshly. Suggest to never sign up!
A lot of DePaul students don't like to be challenged so I took the reviews with a grain of salt. She knows her stuff but is the perfect storm of expecting a LOT from you coupled with being extremely unclear. I learned a lot, but lost points due to confusion and I know I wasn't alone. Also, the quizzes she gave are an awful way to be evaluated.
I've taken 3 courses with her. All of the negative reviews, if you are just trying skirt by in college, don't bother with good professors. She WILL ask a lot of you, as she should. She's amazing, pushes you hard to learn, and delivers in kind with enthusiasm. It's sad you're expecting the opposite. Best professor in all of my time at DePaul.
She is unclear about directions and she gets in your face about topics. I dont recommend this class professor.
Ok guys, let's set the record straight! Angelika is a good professor. Does she expect you to read closely? Yes. Will she call on you if you seem unprepared or disengaged? Yes. But, the readings are not long or dense, there were two papers and four quizzes - this class was totally manageable! Plus, she's really approachable and ready to help.
I don't think I have disliked a professor this much the entire time I have been at DePaul. She was very hard to contact outside of class, hardly ever responded to emails and when she did they were cryptic and vague. She demanded that we think about the topic on a higher level that was very hard to achieve unless you spent hours outside of class tea
This was one of the hardest classes that I have ever take. The Professor was not helpful and was not approachable. To succeed you have to participate a lot during every class.
The way this intro class was set up was EXTREMELY unnecessary. The work load is extremely overwhelming for a 100 level course, and the concepts are NOT easy to understand. I think she expects everyone to only read for this course, which is truly absurd. The amount of actual work isn't bad (4 quizzes and 2 papers), but the readings are ridiculous.
Professor Cedzich is really passionate about the subject matter, but she is extremely unclear. assignments are confusing and the quizzes are weirdly formatted. There is a lot of reading, which isn't too bad but she basically expects you to know everything up front and puts you on the spot if you don't an answer. not for an introverted student.
Look, she gets a bad rap cuz her classes aren't easy. The reality is, you come to the class with an open mind about the subject, do the work , participate then you'll be fine. She's a China specialist, a sinologist in the good ol' European sense, if traditional China or Taiwan is your game you will have fun. Her quizzes are guess proof though READ
First off, I have never been so disrespected by a professor this poorly ever. I devoted more time into this class than even my major classes combined to even pass. If she does not like you, for my case, she calls you out in class and makes you seem like scum. She only gives vague comments on your paper. Please save yourself from this class.
Not going to lie, her class gave me awful anxiety and it has been one of the toughest classes I have taken so far, but it was still a GOOD class. She does call on people randomly if no one is talking, so definitely be sure to have done the readings assigned.
Her accent was hard to understand sometimes, but I liked the words she used to describe Buddhism. She seemed really passionate about the subject and really wanted us to get a grasp of it. If you are actually interested in learning about Buddhism, I would recommend this class.
She expects you to know everything even though she doesn't teach. If she doesn't like an opinion she will tell you it's wrong and not accept it in a paper. She doesn't understand English that well and therefore doesn't answer any questions. She will also pick on you and call you out during class. She wasnt meant to be a professor she can't do it
People complain about this class because she doesn't try to save you from the embarrassment of not knowing the answer. As long as you engage in the conversation, it's fine. She has a lot of passion for what she does, and just cares that people put in the effort. She won't hold your hand through the entire course, and it upsets people.
Professor Cedzich is incredible. She is so knowledgeable about the things she teaches and gives very interesting and informative lectures. She doesn't tolerate slacking, so if you're looking for an easy class, don't take this class. But if you're looking to learn, absolutely do! I've taken her twice, and if I could, I would take her again!
The syllabus and assignment descriptions are cluttered with unnecessary information, which she wastes class time repeating. Lectures rarely add anything new to the reading. All she does in class is summarize what she's already told us. The class isn't difficult, and the reading is interesting, but sitting in class is mind-numbing.
This is one of the worst teachers I've ever had. I actually dropped her class. This class is an amazing and fun and interesting topic that is executed so horribly it makes you angry about it all. She has an accent and is from Germany and doesn't really understand English well. She makes no sense on her assignments(papers). DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Usually, Professor Cedzich captivates the class. She's tough on policies. The class made me anxious. She favors students who participate. Don't blame her for that. Some deep philosophical stuff really made me question life! Can't be SUPER shy. Don't be late - double-check syllabus. NOT A BLOWOFF CLASS. Cedzich loves this topic and challenges you!
She is the worst. Should be sort of blowoff class since its a Gen Ed. She takes herself way too seriously. I need to work hard on major specific classes not a religious dimensions class they force atheists to take.
I will never take a class with Angelika Cedzich again! She's so condescending and mean! She makes me feel like she wants me to fail and thinks I'm an idiot every time I email her to ask questions! I really do not like this lady!
Amidst the struggle with COVID-19, Prf Cedzich is the greatest cause of stress for me and my classmates. None of us can properly reach out as she deflects our questions to her syllabus. She piles on tons of assignments and gets angry when students are asking for clarity. For a Buddhism class it does not seem like she cares about her students...
Covid-19 sent me home, forced me to take this class online. Let me tell you this has been a mess. They syllabus is confusing & we asked for a ZOOM conference for clarification, she refused. The students are all very frustrated with how things are going, including the fact that she's already assigning work & we don't have textbook. Save yourself!
I will be taking her again in the fall to fulfill credit for my major. While I love what she teaches, she fails to understand that students work. I work to pay the bills, and yet in my fall class, she says she will just randomly have zoom on some Fridays with little explanation. She needs to work better with student schedules.
I took this class during the pandemic with everything online, and it was literally IMPOSSIBLE to figure out when the assignments were due. Nothing was posted on the course page. Assignments were posted super close to the due date and never had enough time to do them. We usually didn't find out there was even an assignment until AFTER they were due.
