Menon is not a good prof. Concepts were not clearly explained and the class was super math heavy and it was just endless examples without explaining how it was done.
I have almost never hated sitting in lecture three times a week as much as I have this quarter for phy 9c. He goes way too fast in his lectures, and never acknowledges issues that students may have. Even his office hours are practically useless, and he massively underprepares his students for his tests.
PHY 9C is easily the hardest of the 9 series, so I try to give Menon some credit. New professor, tough material, his lectures were almost 100% derivation and no practical examples to help with HW. HW is from text but still very difficult. Discussions not mandatory. Midterms were extremely difficult and not calculation based. Large curve.
Absolutely a horrible lecturer. He's a PhD candidate who was too busy to hold extra office hours for those who couldn't make them due to work or other class conflicts. He doesn't acknowledge or care that most of us were in the dark. He cancelled all discussion sections due to "poor attendance." What about all of us who actually went and needed it?
Gotta love him
Overall: his lectures are a copy of Weidman's libre text and he posts his notes online. So if you have time to attend lecture, read the libre text, do practice problems from the actual textbook, and the PRACTICE EXAMS you should be good. Most of his lectures are derivations which he WILL test you on. Exams are math heavy and he tests concepts in MC
He's not even a professor, he's a grad student. If he ever wants to become a professor and sees teaching as a future he needs to change everything about his approach. He doesn't feel the need to make the effort to learn how to better his teaching and settles with the mistakes he makes. He backtracks all the time with his examples. He can't teach.
He's not even a professor. He is a grad student who can't teach at all. His lectures are basically just him reading the textbook. His exams are so badly written that there are 2 answers to multiple choice questions. He does not care about his students. He is the worst professor I have had at Davis for your own metal health don't take this class
His lectures barely help us get through with the homework. If I didn't take physics in HS, I'd be completely clueless right now. He also tried to teach 21D concepts in a single lecture. I already passed 21D and loved it, but the concept he tried to teach was rushed and connections were not made! Avoid taking him at all costs, it'll save your sanity
HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH. He applies Math concepts from 21D rather than the prereq of 21B. Gives very broad practice Exams without solutions. His emails have a demeaning tone that makes things even worse. He knows physics really well but it is wrong to call him a teacher.
Never rated a prof before but felt like I HAD to because this guy's the worst. He introduces like 4 different concepts in one lecture and never really expands on them. When he gives us hw it's way harder than the stuff we learned in lecture and the methods we were taught don't even apply to the hw and practice tests. I'd give 0/5 stars if I could
When I went into this class with physics being a significant part of my life. However, due to the professor's excellent teaching skills and his passion for teaching I will proceed to change my major and drop out of college. Please do not take this class it will be the end of you. I would give him a 0 if I could.
This class is probably one of the best at UC DAVIS. YOU TOTALTY get your money's worth along with around an average of 2 hours of sleep a night. Make sure you book an appointment with ur therapist (Trust me you will need it). For your own good I suggest you stay well away from his class.
PLEASE DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. YOU WILL REGRET IT. YOU WILL SPEND ENDLESS NIGHTS STUDYING ONLY TO GET BELOW AVERAGE ON THE IMPOSSIBLE TESTS AND CRY YOURSELF TO SLEEP AT NIGHT.
Given the circumstances right now the professor is not being accommodating students nor offering alternative solutions. He understands that these are "trying times" but will not offer resources nor academic support.
Menon really inspires me. As someone who hopes to one day go into academia myself, Menon has shown me that literally anybody can be a professor. Truly an inspiration.
He does not give a crap about what's happening with corona and the riots that are impacting many students' ability to learn at all. He's pretending like everything is normal and that all students have the same ability to learn as if they were in a real classroom environment.
Told student to drop the class if they where affected by COVID-19 or protest because he wasnt going to be lenient with the work.
Absolutely horrible experience, gave no effort and shows no care for his students I wouldnt even let my worst enemy take this class.
Avoid at all costs
I like Menon as a person. He's funny and sarcastic, He's really accessible in office hours. HOWEVER as a lecturer, I think he needs to work on it. I think he needs to explain better during lecture and be more considerate towards his students. Tests were hard, homework was kinda hard too. Physics is hard.
Many people have complaints, but i thought he was a good professor overall. He has a wonderful grasp of the concepts, constantly checks in if people have questions, holds many office hours, responds to questions well, has a great personality outside of class .I just wish the notes were cleaner and if he could talk a little slower. High expectations
The university made finals optional however, he proceeds to have them saying that he feels that we aren't working hard enough and he doesnt have enough to grade us on. This was the only class where I had 2 midterms! and still have to take a final ... oh and I forgot he can't teach at all!!!!!! and couldn't care less about his students.
He has a very good grasp of the concepts of this course, but repeatedly fails to explain as such. You do end up learning how to do the problems through the homework, which ends up taking far too long. My suggestion for this professor is juts to skip the lectures and to read librettists. which is what 2/3 of the class ended up doing.
His lectures were confusing and all over the place. He asked questions and held office hours quite often but they weren't very helpful and left you more confused.
He doesn't deserve the hate he gets. His midterms/final are easier than the practice midterms/final, so if you actually do the practice, you will be okay. He has lots of office hours and responds to emails quickly. Final grades are curved. Homework is hard sometimes, but is manageable. Overall, this class was not as hard as I expected.
He's a horrible lecturer, going into details that aren't necessary for the class, and for some strange reason, thinks that test solutions are detrimental to the learning process. I studied everything on the practice final wrong unknowingly, and got a horrible score as a result, Avoid like the plague!
The worse professor at UCD I spent countless hours studying only to fail and fail again. Can't lecture to save his life. Even in these times made no attempt to address what is going on neither Covid or BLM. When other professors were being easy on the students he did the opposite. Honestly I rather get covid+ebola then have to take this guy again.
LIke, have no care for the student and his lecture just a repeat of what on his note. points are not clear and exams are not related to what he said in class.
I had him during spring 2020 (peak coronavirus/quarantine time). He expected us to continue working on his class as if nothing different was going on in the world, and made no effort to make class more accessible to those struggling with family/health/other issues. He was rude and condescending, and called many students "careless" for no reason.
Lectures are sloppy. Homework assignments are far too difficult. Exams either are fair or incredibly hard; they will reflect the samples he gives out though. He is condescending and disrespectful towards his students and makes them feel as if they cannot succeed. I had to rely on classmates to pass this class as he was of little help (OH were okay)
Graduate student with no teaching experience. He does not know how to communicate with students. Threatened to fail students for not filling out a survey within 24 hours which he gave no heads up about. Skips over important details of concepts by simply stating "due to suspicious maths" or "figure that out on your own". Do not take this professor!
A lot of the time were given basics and expected to solve complex problems from what we were taught. Not impossible, just really hard. Curve was very generous. Class average was around a B-
He is not understanding of his student's needs or issues, he's a terrible lecturer (he just runs through slides at a mile a minute barely explaining anything), and he inflates the weight of quizzes+tests even though the majority of the work is discussion and homework sets. He tries too hard to maintain the toxic "eliteness" of physics
He is unnecessarily hard on his class, and he seems to justify that students just "can't keep up with him" because they don't understand the material which is blatantly not true. The department shouldn't allow him to teach anymore until he gets some training. Students shouldn't have to struggle through class because the instructor is stubborn.
Decent professor for an online format; much better than another phy1A professor who's class I dropped. It seems he's made improvements based on his previous reviews. His explanations are hard to follow at times but he's always willing to answer questions; gets frustrated when there's no participation. The homework takes EONS to complete.
Do not take his class I'm serious. He's blunt and not understanding in the slightest. I don't understand how some people are even giving him average scores on here. His lectures are useless and his quizzes are impossible to pass, and he weighs them HEAVILY (40% of the grade) so even if you do 100% on hw and discussions you could fail.
Professor Menon is super knowledgeable and has a sarcastic humor. His lectures are packed but never dull. He is super accessible outside of class. He even offered to extend his OH for me on Zoom to answer my HW questions. He often pauses in lecture to really make sure that we understand, and elaborates until we do. He's really chill but caring.
I was unsure of taking this class due to bad reviews, but hes chill, and his sarcastic comments during lecture are funny if you catch them. He goes thru lecture fast, but always pauses for questions; everything you need for HW, quiz, and final are on the slides anyway (no curveballs). His expectations are clear, responsive thru email, lots of OH!
This is a couple-years old review, but Menon is not cut out for teaching. He frequently overcomplicated material and would rather teach us vector calculus than teach us 9C content. He faced the board as he spoke which made it hard to hear him, and his exams were very difficult for those who weren't masters in math. Really was more math than physics
Professor Menon is very caring and goes out of his way to help students. The lecture slides are beneficial in reviewing for the quizzes and the final. Homework is based off of the lectures. Professor Menon is very responsive through email and has clear expectations from the start.
Unapproachable and overcomplicates material.
If you have poor executive functioning skills like myself, this class will be a nightmare for you because the homework is hard to get through and is worth a significant amount of your grade. Otherwise, I think professor Menon is nowhere near as bad as these reviews claim: he is accommodating to students' needs, and he curves generously.
Making an introductory physics course unnecessarily difficult.
I feel like he makes lecture unnecessarily confusing, just read his detailed notes and the book. Homework is 40% of your grade try and score high. Test questions are heavily worded and weirdly phrased, the average scores on both midterms were about 24/50, the midterms were more difficult than the final and there was a generous curve at the end.
homework is 40% of grade and its easy to get full credit. takes a couple hours a week. tests are hard, and class averages were about 50%, but theres a healthy curve at the end of the class, so don't focus on your grade, focus on how you're comparing to the rest of the class. I failed every test and got a B
Took this in the summer of 2020 tests are really hard, long, and time. Does have a generous curve at the end. Lectures are confusing. Recommend studying from another source.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Lectures were very confusing and gave few examples of what we actually did in hw. Quite a bit of hw and all graded by correctness. Exams were long, and everything was graded pretty harshly. I studied every single day with an aerospace major, and still couldn't get higher than a B. (taken SS1 2020)
He's really good at explaining everything in simple terms and shows all the steps for problems he does in class. The homework assignments are long but he gives plenty of time to do them. I've only had one midterm with him so far but it was completely reasonable and some questions were from homework. He also has really good handwriting.
Awful. Lectures do not cover homework or midterm content. Need to teach yourself from the book to do homework problems. At office hours, his first recommendation for struggling in the class is to drop it. When asked for help on homework, he says: "This might be a trick question from the book" He does not know what he assigns. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Prof. Menon is kind and funny. He takes the time to answer any and all questions during class and is easily approachable for help during office hours. He also posts lecture notes and gives practice exams before tests. Physics is a hard class so attendance in lecture and extra studying from the textbook are important.
How do you make an introductory course this difficult? Lectures are stretched out for an unnecessary amount of time (4 pages of notes over 90 minutes), too much homework that is not reflective of the lectures, and very confusing exams. Probably the only class I've ever taken where the textbook is more helpful than the professor. Avoid at all costs.
the hardest introductory class you'll ever take
There are four assignments and three tests that make up the entirety of the course. The homework is difficult but there are two office hours each week to attend. The tests are similar to the material covered in class.
The reviews on here are misleading. Dr.Menon is not a horrible professor - just like any other stem class showing up to lectures, going to office hours to ask as many questions as possible, and forming a study group are all crucial to success in this class. He is very accommodating and fair. By far a better prof than the rest in the department.
This was one of the best profs I had so far. He didn't overcomplicate anything, taught straightforwardly. 4 homework assignments (40% of grade) which you could get 100% on (graded on completion) Midterms and final were like the practice ones he provided! Loved him, started exams early, let students stay late to finish up, incredibly understanding.
Professor Menon is a super kind and caring professor. He cares about his students and provides a lot of help if you need it. The practice midterms and finals are a good representation of the actual tests as well, and doing them really helped me on tests. I would definitely have him again as a professor.
Honestly reading the past ratings I was kinda scared, but for the most part the professor showed he cared and made time for his students, as long as they asked. The only reason I gave him a 3 rating for difficulty was because some topics are a bit difficult to understand, and some times if felt like he wasn't make sense. But he was understanding.
Pros: Professor is fair, chill, and accessible. The homework is graded mostly on completion and lots of time to complete it. The exams were similar to the practice exams and homework. Cons: The lectures are surface level. Needed more in depth explanations of concepts/definitions and for him to work through problems slowly and thoroughly.
I thought he did a good job at explaining concepts and trying to keep students engaged.
Professor Menon was great. He was very caring and always accessible outside during office hours to answer questions and go over concepts/homework. When he realized homework problems were very hard, he would go over them in class. His exams were fair. Like if a question appeared in the exam, it was either covered in class or in the homework.
Physics was one of those classes I just wanted to get over with, required for my major. I am glad I got Professor Anirudha Menon because I felt his course was easy to keep up with, while taking hard courses. I really don't understand Physics that well, but I just completed the HMWK, got an average of 50% exams,& that was enough to carry me through.
Professor Menon is quite approachable and cares about students' understanding of physics. He is very lenient about grading on homework and exams. My advice: study your homework and practice exams; for the final: study the past exams. If the homework is difficult, go to office hours for help!
I think Prof Menon deserves a higher rating. I barely got through 1A and didn't understand a thing but Prof Menon made me feel like I could actually do well in 1B. HW is a big grade % and easy to do well on, lectures are great and very understandable. Physics is never gonna be an easy class but he made physics very approachable. Highly recommend
prof menon was a great teacher considering the difficulty of physics in general, had about 5 homework all based from the textbook and there are 2 midterms and a cumulative final. the midterms were problems from class or homework and we were given a cheat sheet. there is a curve as well. overall enjoyed this class more than physics 1a.
The same as the other physics profs that don't really teach. Lecture doesn't really teach anything, don't go. Just watch youtube videos on the topics for hw and exams. He seems like a nice guy, but is unwavering on personal issue. I think he would be good for a higher level course, but not for students who could care less about physics.
Ideal physics professor. Straight to the point, no-frills lectures that are easy to follow and engaging. He seems to truly understand how to teach physics to non-physics majors. All assignments and tests are fair, especially if you supplement your learning with reading the textbook.
Great professor. Always open to feedback & great in office hours. The lectures are clear, he sends the notes afterwards, and the practice tests reflect exams -even some repeated questions! Allowed a note sheet during exams. He makes hard physics content as simple as possible. He even threw a pizza party at the end of the quarter - highly recommend
His lectures were clear and he even gave us a break in the middle of lectures because they were long, which I really appreciate. The class will be tough of course because the material itself is difficult. If you go to lectures, do the homework, and prepare a good equation sheet for every test you should be able to do pretty well.
He actually made physics pretty understandable and digestible! His notes are organized and easy to follow so even if you miss class it's not a huge deal. He does sometimes go fast in lectures but he's always open to questions/explaining things in more detail. His tests were fair and he lets you use a cheat sheet which was awesome.
This professor is very clear about what he expects us to know on exams. Nearly half of the points in the class go to homework so if you work hard you will not fail this class. Cheat sheets are offered on all Exams as well as detailed equation sheets. Overall kind, clear, and fair professor, recommended.
Really doesn't deserve as many bad reviews as he has. Truly cares about his students' success. 2 midterms and a final. Lots of the questions are identical to the study guides. Four homework assignments due throughout quarter. Very manageable. Definitely still difficult but mostly because it is physics not because of the prof. Lectures not recorded.
This class is very fair in terms of the homework and tests. 5 homework assignments that were not too long. There was nothing you hadn't seen before on the midterms, and you were allowed a cheat sheet which was very helpful. I would recommend taking his class if given the opportunity!
Much better experience compared to phy1a thanks to this Professor Menon. Lectures were very organized and in depth. Exams were long but the questions were very reasonable and not overly complicated, just to gain an understanding of our ability to apply necessary equations and basic concepts. Lots of resources were provided to prepare for exams too.
His lectures were very clear and the class was very well organized. His office hours were incredibly useful and he was willing to answer questions any number of times in different ways until you understood the concept. The tests are fair and often take questions from the practice tests.
Excellent professor! Lectures are clear/easy to follow, with helpful examples. hw mostly graded on completion, some questions were difficult, but he explained them well in OH and went over a few in class. tests were fair, similar to practice/hw, and the averages were high (~70%). helpful and approachable in office hours, take this prof if you can!
The course was well organized for the most part. The professor uploads his lecture notes which are extremely helpful and useful for Hw assignments and as a study resource. The only downside was it felt rushed towards the end of the quarter when cramming in the last few chapters.
He really cares about his students and exams are extremely fair. While what he does in lecture on is covered in the homework, it's often worded/asks for slightly different things. Overall though, really excellent professor, and as long as you study on your own you'll grasp the material. Practice exams were supper helpful.
Amazing professor!! Explained concepts very clearly in lectures, he is very accessible outside of class and you can tell he really cares about his students. Homework was long but he gives you at least a week to complete. Tests were reasonable, final used the same questions from midterm just w different numbers. Great intro to physics!
He doesn't teach you much, as in you don't learn from him much, you have to learn things by yourself. I find his tests and homework are easy to do. If you have a general knowledge of physics and chemistry, and understand the readings fast, this is not a hard class to do.
Professor's content was okay. He curved me down and did not use my raw score, which was higher than the letter grade I received.
i have no physics experience before so was afraid for this class but this prof broke everything down so well and i was able to understand everything! going to office hours rly helped but tbh i still could have passed without, his lectures were v clear and helpful for studying. tests were not bad, and the final was just recycled midterm/hw questions
only bad thing is the hw, it was hard and took a long time. BUT it was graded mostly on completion (60%) so i still got a good grade, just try not to procrastinate and actually start early. he gives good study materials that are similar to the tests, and if you skip lecture the notes he posts are basically the exact same so its easy to catch up
Tests are genuinely way too long, he makes this course way harder than it has to be. You're better off self teaching yourself the material. The homework has 5 questions but has an excessive amount of "parts" to each question. Avoid taking this if professor if you have the chance for 9A.
Possibly the worst physics professor here. Pulls out random overcomplicated equations to prove very simple concepts and expects us to use them. Homework is due before the things on the homework are taught. Tests are horrendous (avg. 47.5%) because he gives us ~40 minutes for a ~70-minute test. No matter what your physics background is, avoid him.
Anirudha Menon was one of the most unbearably difficult professors that I've had the unfortunate sorrow of taking. Homework was hard and had material that he hadn't taught yet. His curriculum is unnecessarily hard on calculus and his tests are too long and hard. Our next midterm's split into 2 parts across two days instead of just being shorter :(
Would not recommend his homework may seem short as there are only 6 or 7 questions but they usually have 5 parts each. The first midterm average was 19/40 and often tests using concepts from Math 21D when the prerequisite is 21B. He is my least favorite professor so far I have taken at Davis.
His lecture material is so different from what is expected to be solved on the HW, he also can't align his schedule and makes the HW due before even covering the necessary topics. Test "system" is horrible, passing out papers for 10+ minutes into a 50 min class and expecting students to finish the test in that ~40 minute time frame is ridiculous.
He designed the first midterm to take 80 minutes to finish, despite us having 50 minute classes this quarter. This resulted in the average score being below 50%. To fix this disaster, he's not making the second midterm shorter. Instead, he's splitting the second midterm over two class periods... We're going to take the same exam split over two days
Avoid taking this professor if you are able to, genuinely one of the hardest professors and makes physics way harder than it actually has to be. You are probably better off with most other professors in this department, especially for an intro physics class. Tests are extremely long, homework is way too long, and his lectures don't line up at all.
Not only is he a terrible professor but is condescending/rude towards students. One girl asked a question in OH and he visibly laughed at her and said she should know this. His lectures are vastly different than homework/exams. Avg on first midterm was like 46% which is more of a reflection of his teaching rather the the students. Avoid taking :(
Avoid
Our bestie professor menon had really amazing lecture notes, and the tests reflected the homework very well. IDK about phy009a, but phy001a was amazing with him. I took him in the winter.
His lectures are very proof heavy, his explanations for concepts are flimsy at best since he assumes it's "obvious". He'll just write out three boards of proof to prove a concept without slowing down to explain it. His homework is very conceptual and usually there are few concrete numbers to go off of, don't take especially if its your first class.
someone teach this man how to pass out midterms, if you sit in the back be prepared to start your midterm 5 minutes late since bro cannot learn a fair way to give everyone the midterm... he gives it to the ppl in the front and asks them to pass it back and u can start as soon as u get it... also useless lectures just study on ur own and pray ngl..
crazy how he gave us an 80min midterm in a 50min class period and decided to not accommodate for anything when midterms are worth 40% of our overall grades. almost never has example in lecture, is unaware about being condescending towards students with small phy backgrounds, exclaiming that every subject is regarded as "simple." doable but painful.
He pushes HARD for people to give him good reviews. He was at a 1.9 when I had to take him and he doesnt deserve anywhere near as high as that. No exaggeration, worst professor I've ever seen. PLEASE AVOID!! If it means you have to take physics in the summer, by a professor with a 1.0 rating, it will be better than this pitiful excuse of a class
DO NOT TAKE HIM! YOU WILL SUFFER. MENTALLY. Even with a good background in physics you will struggle in his class. His lectures are based on proofs and doesn't really go through any examples. However, he is a nice guy but not the best at his job.
He's condescending and thinks that's the normal way to talk to students who ask questions. Very belittling, not someone you want to go to for help or learn about physics from. Don't take if possible.
DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!Especially if you don't have a physics background, this professor had terrible lectures that don't prepare for homework and tests, which are very conceptual in nature. He asks for participation but gets upset with students when they don't give the specific one he was looking for. He also sucks at passing out exams in a fair manner
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! He is extremely condescending to students who struggle and claims every concept is simpler than it is. Every lecture is full of irrelevant proofs which are completely unhelpful for homework/tests. Both midterms were passed out horribly so that some people started the exam on time and others started up to 10-15 minutes late.
Lesser of two evils. From what I understand Chatterjee is worse, at least his students say so. He may lecture better but his homework harder. None the less, MENON IS PURE EVIL. Every single lecture he would claim that concepts were simple, give proofs that were not helpful, and be RIDICULOUSLY CONDESCENDING when asked questions in lecture/OH.
This Professor is pretty awful. He is super condescending towards student who ask questions. Once a student asked for help and his only answer was "I went over this explicitly in class". I really do not recommend this professor, just due to his attitude. His tests were really badly organized as well.
PLEASE do not take him if at all possible. his lectures are confusing and do not make much sense if you're an average student. exams and homework felt unnecessarily difficult and not very intuitive, and TAs were not very helpful during discussions. he assumes you know things which doesn't make lectures cohesive. try to take someone else...
Menon does not deserve all the hate he gets. While he does expect you to learn a lot more than what the curriculum requires, he teaches those things relatively well and does good examples in class to demonstrate concepts. Gives lots of homework but is helpful for studying and is graded leniently. Tests graded harshly but mostly fair
Menon doesn't deserve any positive reviews he gets. It doesn't matter what level of physics knowledge you have coming into any one of his classes, he WILL confuse you more. He isn't even approachable, as he ends up giving you really condescending answers. Nothing within his class will help, just hope you get a good group that can help you. Gl.
An alright professor - lectures on the concepts okay but his homework is super tough. Found myself using online resources to complete the homework. I suggest doing lots of practice problems from the textbook every day to do well. He gives a huge curve in the class so even if it seems like you're failing, you'll be fine.
i liked the prof lectures and live demonstrations he sometimes had. more or less understood the material in lecture but some hw concepts did not transfer; complexity of the concept or other. lab tas can be hit or miss. did not go to discussion bc ta did not help w/ hw. if you put in the work you can pass with the curve
I took AP Physics 1 and AP Physics C in high school, so most of the content was review for me. The midterms were ok for me because of this, but he did cover content very quick throughout the course. Final was terrible, even after taken mechanics twice in high school, and a couple of the questions were very confusing. Curve was very good.
Good lectures and lecture notes. Most homework can be solved using the examples from lecture. Often gave extensions to homework. Phsyics was made very clear by Menon.
Very tough grader. Hard exam. Only if your father is a physics professor and teaches you very day, you are able to get good grade on this class. Or you have to learn time, space, complexity to fully master the physics knowledge.
For the love of God do NOT take! He's just a grad student more preoccupied with research than learning to be a quality educator. His office hours are brief, not allowing time for meaningful learning. He gets frustrated easily, especially for 1A. He expects kinematics to come effortlessly and makes hw awful. 9C students can't even help me with it.
Genuinely one of the worst professors I've ever had. Homework was way more challenging than the lecture examples and exams were torturous. Our final was worth 70% of our grade. He completely gave the impression of not caring about his students and showed up 30 minutes to his own final (bringing in our tests) and still stopped to order coffee first.
Menon absolutely does NOT deserve the hate he gets. I took him during the summer and by only attending lecture, doing homework, and doing practice midterms and finals, I was able to get an A in the class before the curve. His curve allowed people to go from 30% to a C and 50% to a B. Very generous curve, would take again.
Excellent and organized lecturer. Leans on mathematical rather than physical intuition; is more mathematically rigorous than most physics professors in lower division classes in my experience. Lots of homework, but it is pulled from textbook. Tests pulled from both the textbook and professor-written. High expectations of students (in a good way).
His lectures and notes are proofs. The lectures are super boring. He's test are hard. LOTS of hw. He doesn't seem like a bad person though. My main issue was the lectures were not great and the tests were pretty hard.
Do you love 21D vector Calculus. Do you hate when the exams test content from the homework. Do you think finals are too easy when you get a cohesive practice exam. Well then boy-howdy this is the professor for you.
Disclaimer: took during Summer Session. Overall good professor for the course. lectures were quite math heavy which was to be expected. Lots of derivations! His lecture notes are immaculate and well written, but not the best at verbally explaining. The homework is incredibly time consuming/tedious. Fair exams. Read Young and Freedman's Uni Physics
Judgmental, doesn't empathize. Use Freedman & Young to learn the material, NOT his lectures! To finish the HW most people had to go to a ton of OH, use AI/google, or copy someone; half of it was like strangely worded trick questions. Unhelpful practice tests. Fat curve ofc. Asked if anyone wanted to do the lecture for him, twice. Cares minimally.
Menon's class is challenging, but engaging. The lectures are helpful, and he covers a lot of material. While the homework can be tough, using resources like the textbook and Unstuckstudy can really aid in understanding the concepts. Overall, it's a rewarding class if you're willing to put in the work.
