Anis is very very knowledgeable in his field though his lectures can be a little dry at times. He does try to make them fun by adding funny videos so the effort is there. You only have lecture once a week which I really liked and the weekly assignments/quizzes were pretty easy imo. Overall a pleasant experience if you want minimal work for a class
Professor Rahman did a great job of handling teaching during the pandemic. The weekly quiz and writing assignment were extremely easy, but still fun. The content covered was really interesting, and I already find myself using knowledge from this class in my daily life. The class will be difficult if you don't do the readings, or at least skim them.
This course has some interesting assignments with some practical research methods that I find very useful. The prof was very helpful and caring. Most lectures and assignments are asynchronous. Must follow the lectures and read assignment instructions carefully to get a good grade. Easy mcq quizzes with low mark drop off.
Learned a lot of about geopolitics of info tech between US, China, India, Russia etc. Rich theories and detailed examples. At the beginning it was a lot of readings but midway through it came down to one per week which was great. Lectures are not boring but can be long - be ready to participate. Clear grading criteria and extra credit option.
Professor Rahman offered a mix of prerecorded lectures and live classes with recording on. No penalty for missing a live class as long as you catch up with its recording asap. I found live classes more fun and fly faster. I wish more people had their camera on though, esp during discussions. Good feedback on assignments
Easy quizzes, detailed grading rubric, and quick email responses. The prof is genuinely interested in helping students with doing better. He made lecture slides, video records, transcripts all available as we requested. Did it mostly asynchronously and got the grade I expected
Lecture slides were a little dense, but if you pay attention the quizzes are easy. Everything is really accessible, and the rubric for the two papers are really clear. It's one of those classes where if you put in the work, you'll get the grade and if not, you won't.
One of my favorite classes at the UW. I learned so much. Will take him again!
Prof. Rahman's classes were engaging and interesting, there was one quiz a week but if you went to the quiz section the answers were explained and practically given to you, and 4 short answer papers a quarter. Dr. Rahman's lectures were a lot of fun and you could really tell he was interested in what he was teaching!
Good professor. Class is fairly easy with either a Quiz or Essay due every week. TA's do most of the work in this class but it was overall enjoyable
Expects too much of student's time! He changed to hybrid and moved quiz section times, only releases paper prompts the week the topic is taught, not enough time between paper due date and topic of some prompts being taught, had irl lecture for 2hrs and then 2hrs of online after sometimes. Papers=50% of grade. Quizs were easy tho. Not hard just bad.
While COM 200, being an intro class, was not too interesting, the professor was great. His lectures are clear and accessible outside of class (though he talks a little slowly). The quizzes are very easy, especially if attending quiz sections, which are just a summary of the week's lectures. The papers are simple and have clear criteria.
Although sometimes difficult to understand at times, he is one of the best professors I have had! He conveys his meanings clearly and provides many examples in lecture including a lot of videos. He is also very interested in the success of his students and will have no problem answering any question or fixing any problem that is seen by the class.
Really caring and supportive professor who makes lectures interesting with relevant stories, videos, and jokes. I really enjoyed the class and found the content to be super interesting. The quizzes were really easy and papers weren't bad but were graded on a pretty specific rubric.
Professor Rahman is quite passionate about his studies, and it shows. He makes some insightful observations that helped changed my way of seeing things. The class structure is good (especially the reading reviews), but the technology is not always functional, and it would be great to receive more time to complete the quizzes. Highly recommend him.
He's an alright professor, but his slides are poorly made in that you never know what to write down. The videos he shows in class are cool but I often am confused how what we are learning is related to communication studies. Lots of the class is based on politics. Quizzes and essays are easy.
This class should NOT be a communication class. The lectures are dense and heavy on technology as a topic and expect you to have previous knowledge of technology. The overall structure of the course is not bad and the amount of work is reasonable but the lectures are repetitive, long, boring and don't have an overall conclusion. I don't recommend.
This course deals with difficult stuff like surveillance, racism, sexism, labor exploitation in IT industries and in everyday use. It was eye opening for me. Readings were deep but lecture examples were most helpful. Perhaps not an easy course for all but a good one if you are into critical thinking and challenging your comfort zones. Helpful TA.
This is simply a very bad course. First of all, 50 percent of the grade depends on four-course papers, but the time is not enough, and the prompts are very confusing. He had no focus in class and always gives irrelevant examples which make students even more confused about the topics.
Engaged professor. Highly values in-person lectures; no lecture recordings. 1 dense, academic reading a week. 2 essays alltogether. Honestly, I was expecting a bit more advanced topics for a 300 level class; however, it does a sufficent job introducing social justice issues with technology today if you don't have much background in technology.
I like Prof Rahman's hands on lecture style and the course design. Instead of reading off the slides, he connects with students, moves around, and takes control of the large classroom using stories, videos, peer discussions, and jokes. Four short papers with detailed grading rubric and no exam. TA's section is not recorded, a downside.
I took this as a joint COM & international studies course (money & power in international com). Professor Rahman is well knowledgeable about both areas. Interesting assignments, some group tasks are graded individually, good good feedback. The readings were challenging but attending the presentations made it easy.
Very entertaining and passionate professor, recorded lectures, and great TA's that help review material every quiz section. Lectures are long and deciding what to take notes on is even harder since he will go on a tangent sometimes. The weekly polls and quizzes are straightforward and the course papers are more time-consuming for than anything.
Dr. Rahman is an excellent lecturer, very funny, intuitive, and a snappy dresser. His grading criteria are clear, homework is light, and lectures are recorded in case you miss class. You have every opportunity to succeed in his class.
The class wasn't too hard, but the lectures could've been more comprehensible. Dr. Rahman is very passionate about the class but will play into edutainment more than necessary instead of clearly defining concepts that show up in the 4 papers worth 50% of your grade. Go to TA office hours because their explanations are more student-friendly.
Rahman is a terribly lecturer. He expects students to be auditory learners, and his visual aids make it very difficult to take notes. When addressed, he said that we have to deal with it, even if it isn't our learning style. Papers=graded harshly, with no feedback. Quizzes=poorly written. Do not take this class with Rahman unless you have to.
This course has an organized syllabus and a weekly Canvas module system with all instructions, lecture recordings, occasional readings, and assignments hyperlinked. Course papers have clear grading criteria, make sure to read them. You have to keep up with TA's tutorial in-person and do the weekly assignments on time to get a good grade.
Lectures are interesting, and all of the homework is super easy. You can complete all of the poll questions during the lecture when he GIVES YOU THE ANSWERS. Weekly quizzes directly reference lecture material, no reading required. There are 3 course papers, which take about 5-6 hours to score a 23/25, and you're given like 3 weeks to complete them.
Good professor. His lectures and wording can sometimes be confusing. However, the content he teaches is very interesting and he uses great examples and explanations to back up his points.
I had a positive experience with Professor Rahman. He presented the material in a way that was easy to understand and provided helpful examples to reinforce the concepts. His grading criteria were very clear and provided specific feedback on assignments to help us improve. He just wasn't very involved with students but good for an intro class.
Good professor, tried to include topics from current events to make topics more relevant. Sometimes lectures would just mostly be reading off slides, but could've been worse. Quizzes and essays were pretty reasonable, just start essays early like they tell you in class.
COM 302 was my first course as a COM major. I was worried about the readings being too hard but the review session helped. Dr. Rahman is a reasonable professor and he is very approachable. He was always available when I needed help with assignments. I'm looking forward to taking more courses with him.
I loved Professor Rahman! He was so sweet and funny. I really enjoyed attending his class. Com 200 was pretty easy as long as you completed all the assignments. I loved Professor Rahman and how easy this class was, definitely would recommend!
Lectures were recorded and made available for asynchronous study. I work two jobs. The flexibility to take the course online helped tremendously. Lectures were interesting. Easy quizzes and papers weren't bad. Caring prof. He reached out to me when I was late for one paper and helped me to get it done.
This is the only com class I haven't 4.0'd. Anis is a very kind man, but his lectures are confusing. The TA and him never once communicated with one another and many students grades dropped tremendously due to their lack of communication which is ironic because its a com class. The TA graded much harder than Anis.
I literally love Anis. I took this class back in winter '23 and he was so passionate in teaching this class (he's so sweet & kind too!). Once at the end of the quarter, he wore an Indian outfit and tied it in the lesson he was teaching. lecture may be long, but I enjoyed learning about this class :). 3 quizzes, weekly quizzes, no exams whatsoever.
Class is easy if you just do the work. Easy weekly quizzes that account for almost the same percentage as the three papers you write in the class so you don't need to stress about not doing that well on a paper. Just make sure to complete the weekly work and you will be fine!
He is a good professor overall, but the TA grade papers hardly
Hands off, one of the best courses I've taken at UW. Dr Rahman teaches about serious issues like ownership, surveillance, labor exploitation, bias, racism, and sexism in the IT world but using humor, passion, and extensive knowledge about these topics. Two papers, graded a bit harshly by the TA. Fairly easy quizzes and polls when I was not absent.
Three papers and weekly quizzes, polls, & discussions. All fairly easy, papers are a tad time consuming due to the required lecture quotes. Lectures are interesting (recorded/no attendance mandatory) and Rahman is a caring and funny professor. Grading is pretty lenient, pretty low stress class.
Prof. Rahman was super fun to be in class with, used pop culture examples to demonstrate comm concepts, recorded lectures, made the class easy to succeed in. Was worried about the 3 course papers but they were fine and graded gently by TAs. Not much homework, TA quiz section reviews helped SO much. Don't get behind bc it's a pain to catch up.
As a PoliSci major needing an elective, I took this jointly offered course on Global Com. Low prep but heavy on in-class activities. The Prof made us to watch and browse through lots of ineresting media clips and sites, then we talked about it. The final exam was fairly hard. Want to ace it? Take notes on the examples of global media he gives.
Professor Rahman wants you to succeed, he started the quarter slow but ended up being super fun to listen to, and he includes a lot of varied learning formats to keep class feeling upbeat, would happily take a class taught by him again.
Managed to keep his really long lectures interesting and fun. He seemed to know a lot about the subject and cared about the students.
He seems like do not care about his student at all. He never response any of my email, whether is a question about course content or course logistic problem.
A genuinely passionate and caring Prof. His lectures were long but enjoyable. Readings are short and easy. Start the course papers early, you will be fine.
Love Anis I wish I got to take more classes with him before graduating. A well rounded, manageable, engaging and informative class. 10/10
I enjoyed his class, the only thing was that they could be kind of dry at times. The quizzes were easy and if you paid attention, you'd get 100s and the essays were very clear on criteria and if you had a decent understanding of the material, you'd get a very good grade.
There's no textbook for this course. The Group Project starts in Week 1 with limited knowledge, instruction, and time to prepare. Total of two 2000-word Course Papers, one due on mid of the course, the other due towards the end. TA graded both papers and deducted lots of points for mistakes in citation format.
He's passionate about communications and explains concepts in-depth to help it make sense. Can be hard to understand his accent sometimes, but only a little bit. My TA was kind and graded gently. 3 course papers that are easy if you take good notes, 4 prompts each with each being 400 words. Weekly easy quizzes and discussions.
Loved this research method class. Readings were old but useful. Manageable assignments. Lots of group discussions and experiment-based learning. My favorite was focused observation and ethics as these later helped me to connect to journalism major ethics class and practical assignments.
Dr. Rahman is very nice and COM 200 is very easy. Lectures were long and boring. They were delivered very chaotically and unclearly. The course papers are easy but very regurgitative which makes them feel useless if you attend lecture. Course content is kind of interesting, but it is the least intellectually stimulating class ever. Super basic. Meh
Dr. Rahman was a great professor and taught a more than manageable class if you organize your time wisely. Unfortunately three weeks of lectures ended up online and the quality of his online lectures are nowhere near as beneficial to the rest of the course as his in-person lectures. I would recommend getting his course papers done ASAP.
Rahman isn't a bad professor, but he's nothing special either. Maybe it was just my experience with com but I personally wasn't that into it. This class is pretty easy tho, make sure to take good notes and not procrastinate on writing the essays and you'll be set.
Dr. Rahman is not a bad professor by any means, however he makes it very easy to not attend lectures seeing as everything is on panopto. Be sure to take notes on alot of things for the Friday quizzes and for the course papers.
Took this class just before graduating. My most favorite class was when Anis showed the difference of journalism between Chinese (CGTN), Russian (RT), and Qatari (Al Jazeera) state media. Very interesting. Quiz questions were a bit unpredictable and often confusing. But Anis was fair and dropped the lowest score.
Rahman is an excellent prof. I loved his witty lectures and willingness to help outside the class. He also made everything online. But the issue is that in a very large class like this, written assignments are graded by the TAs. My TA graded harshly. Rahman gives very thorough grading rubrics to all TAs and students. Make sure to read those ahead.
So boring!! He basically read from his slides and talks so slow. I ended up watching every lecture on 2X speed at home.
Easiest 4.0 I gotten my first . The poll everywhere are graded on accuracy, but all the answers are given in lecture. The answers for the weekly quizzes will given during quiz section, so go to that. There is no public speaking which is nice. The 3 papers are simple and just follow the rubric, and use key words that r pointed out in the lecture.
I was excited about Professor Rahman, he is a likable guy. As the quarter continued I became more and more disappointed. He used at least four weeks of lectures to sway the class to vote a particular way. Extremely political class. He used his platform and position of power to inspire political division. The political topics disrupted my learning.
Rahman is a good professor, but the class is 2 hrs long and lecture-heavy. Attendance is mandatory. The class isn't difficult, though. If you do your work, you should receive a good grade. You will be graded on 3 course papers, weekly online quizzes, weekly 100 word discussion posts, and no final. The papers aren't hard and have detailed rubric.
My glorious king Dr. Anis Rahman is the greatest professor in UW history. Not only are his lectures fascinating and entertaining, but he obviously has a fantastic sense of humor and genuinely wants to connect with his students and help them. The only frustrating thing is how lectures are not available online.
Dr. Rahman has been one of my all-time favorites. His class is always funny and video heavy. He loves Taylor Swift and is always cracking jokes. Assignments are very reasonable. Attendance mandatory in class unfortunately.
Professor Anis Rahman is super caring and knowledge. The class structure is fairly easy and straightforward. 3 course papers with very detailed rubrics, you pick 4 out of the 5 prompts and respond 400-500 words, PollEV and weekly quizzes. Use the key words in the prompts! TA's grade papers. Make sure to attend the Friday quiz sections.
Very solid teacher, you will need to go to lectures since they aren't typically recorded. Quizzes aren't too difficult but be ready to write and synthesize content from the lectures often. Overall, very sweet guy who cared about his student's experience in the class, but also put heavy emphasis on paying serious attention to the lectures.
I thought Dr. Rahman was awesome, but I understand he might not be for everyone. The class is definitely worth it for some communication credits. lectures are 2 hours but he gives a break in the middle, and there are lots of entertaining videos in his presentations. He's a funny guy and I thought his lectures were pretty enjoyable most of the time.
he's very funny and he's passionate about what he teaches !!!! his lectures are long and he isn't always the best at time management but his lectures are so entertaining and so fun and i looked forward to this class! section was easy credit and the papers weren't too hard, overall loved !!!!
Favorite class I've taken at UW! Decent amount of readings, but about interesting topics. As long as you attend the lectures/quiz section (and take detailed notes), you'll be fine.
I had a great time in this class. Make sure you make it to lectures because notes are SUPER IMPORTANT for tests and papers. The lectures are funny and interesting. They're content heavy and sometimes rushed, but overall a great learning experiences. Great introduction to the Communications major!
this professor was very funny and i enjoyed his lectures. but halfway through the quarter, i found his lectures to be less entertaining as they previously were. there are 3 essays which are graded by the ta which was pretty lenient grading. weekly quizzes which i found sort of hard. polls during class for participation.
I loved his class! There are no exams, just quizzes and course papers which was so nice! His class is very lecture heavy, but all his lectures were very engaging and actually interesting. Even though i don't really care about communication I would definitely take a class by him again!
The weekly quizzes have trick questions, the grading criteria on the papers is not followed well by my TA, and there is far too much political commentary. I agree with his political views and I still find it annoying how much he is pushing it onto the class. Quiz sections are so useless but attendance is mandatory.
Despite the heavy course papers and orality-heavy lectures, Rahman has a great sense of humor and works hard to build a supportive instructional atmosphere. His depth of knowledge is easy to learn from, and he's a great professor to have.
Dr. Rahman made COM200 a fun and interesting class! His humor sprinkled throughout the lectures made the 2 hours feel much more tolerable, and his guidelines for the course papers (a large part of the grade) were very clear. As long as you attend lectures and take GOOD notes (lectures weren't recorded), you should be fine!
Has amazing professor skills. He does bring up a lot of political views, but that makes sense since the class is about communicating. Just be aware that if you can't attend classes, your grades will suffer because there are polls you have to take in class for participation. Also, make sure you are writing the lectures down for course papers.
Literally the best! I took his COM 200 and COM 302 class and wanted to take a smaller class with him. He explains the concepts well and he uses a lot of videos and it's really helpful. There's Poll Everywhere, in-class group discussion, discussion posts, quizzes, and a mid-term and a final. He also drops the lowest grade.
This class was fine. Not great, not terrible. Which TA you get makes a huge difference. Professor Rahman had a lot of unnecessary examples in the long, boring lectures, but it wasn't too difficult content wise. The three course papers were manageable.
The content was interesting, and he communicated everything very well. I enjoyed how much he tried to relate to us in his teachings by bringing in real-world concepts to the sometimes mundane material and interacted with students mid-talk. However, his slides were very rushed, and we didn't get all of the material we were expected to know.
Really great teacher! Went through some of the content really quickly in class, but recorded lectures so content was easy to review. Examples in class were relevant, did drop some lore about himself, so that was sad. Would 100% take again, just make sure you sped the time with the readings and make sure adequate time is given for assignments.
Prof Rahman is genuinely hilarious. Very lecture heavy, but the content is interesting enough to keep you from falling asleep. The class is very participation heavy which is nice, but those course papers can get long and tiring. Grading is done by TA so it's hit or miss. Overall, I would take him again; he's great.
Very funny and engaging lectures, definitely start the course papers early
Funny lectures and uses movie clips throughout. TA grades extensive course papers that are divided by four topics at 450-600 words a piece, so you'll have to luck out on the TA. Quizzes contain small details from lectures and readings sometimes. He uses Poll Everywhere 3-6x/lecture. Easy class if you put in the work, sometimes it feels like a slog.
overall I was aspecting the workload
This course is pretty average overall. You have to write two solid 450–600 word essays each week, and the most challenging part is getting the APA formatting right. How bearable the class is really depends on which TA you get. The professor's lectures are okay but tend to be long and a bit dull, and sometimes pushes politics onto us.
If you are planning on taking this course with Rahman for an A&H credit, don't! Was not interested in COM before, and the mandatory, mind numbing 2-hour long lectures solidified that He attempts to make the boring material interesting with constant pop-culture references and videos, but it really does not work and is a waste of time. Easy-A tho.
Love this guy, genuinely one of my favorite professors I've had. Definitely lecture-heavy, and lots of work, but if you actually want to learn he's excellent. Funny, clear and effective teaching, obviously cares about his students. I'm not even a com major (had to take com 200 as a core requirement) and I had a great time and learned a lot.
Weekly online discussions and occasional in-class writing. Two in-person mcq exams, which I thought would be difficult but he provided study guides and review sessions that helped a lot. His lectures and activities were fun. Highly recommended if you are into global com and non-American media cultures.
This is my third class with this prof. I must say I got to know him way better in smaller classes than in the big 200 class. He knew my name from day one and even checked in when I turned stuff in late. Rare to see a prof who actually wants you to do well, even if you're not super into the course.
Dr. Rahman is one of my favorite professors at UW. In the smaller classes you get to know him much better. He makes a point to learn everyone's name and his lectures are super interesting. I took him for COM 200 too, and his smaller classes are more personal, but I still think he is an engaging lecturer and a fantastic prof. He's the goat!
The lecture is kinda boring and tiring, because it's very long. However, sometimes it's very insightful and can help you memorize things easily. Nice professor, sometimes make funny jokes, and very caring. He's also very passionate about the lecture material, which create a good learning vibe.
Do not take COM200 if you aren't interested in a degree or career in communications. Do not take COM200 if you have ADHD and cannot sit still for two hours while listening to the most dry and obvious material ever presented. I hope you like tiktoks.
Dr. Rahman was an awesome professor. He is super knowledgable and very passionate about communications, teaching, and his students success. I liked his lecturing style. He'll throw a joke out there occasionally to keep you engaged during the lectures. Light reading. Two big papers. A few exams, pretty standard, nothing crazy. Highly recommend.
Guys this instructor is so full of joy and so silly I love this man. The class was wonderful and generally pretty easy but I would recommend this class just because he's just such a sweet guy. 2 essays and 3 exams, exams are all multiple choice and he throws in lots of easy questions to help you out. I'll miss him he is so whimsical 💔
Class was enjoyable even as a STEM major w/o any interest in communications. Great prof. Easy A&H credit.
Professor Rahman is one of the most passionate and knowledgeable instructors I have ever had. His lectures are engaging and interesting; he is clearly excited for students to learn and think critically, and I would highly recommend any of his classes.
He's an awesome and an incredibly kind dude, but genuinely his lectures are dry and the course content and slides doesn't transition very well from one to another. It's a fair workload class and it's very manageable, however majority of your grade stems from polling, so make sure you attend and pay attention in class. Overall, good/average class.
Anis is genuinely the sweetest professor out there. His lectures can be a bit boring, but you have to show up! 2 papers and 3 exams aren't that bad, just make sure you read his rubrics and do the readings. He was kind enough to round up our grades by 0.50 so we could get a better GPA. Thank you king!
Professor Rahman is genuinely the funniest, most sarcastic guy, absolutely adored him and his class and you should 100% take COM200
Prof. Rahman is funny and kind and wants you to succeed in the class. Having a good TA matters for your grade, I had Kennedy and he was great. They truly all want to help you get a good grade and the grading is very clear. He makes the lectures really entertaining by including funny videos and examples.
