Great Prof, lectures are actually interesting!
lectures: unclear, poorly organized, boring
better to choose her internet course coz she marked the assignment quite "loose"
Best professor I have ever had! Lectures are clear and funny. Awesome prof!!
Knowledgeable, helpful when available
worse teacher i've had in my entire 4 years at UBC. horrible lecturing skills
Competent prof, good course, exams not easy
Very, very slow to return assignments. easy marker. not easy to contact her.
Lots of comments on assignments, easy marker.
horrible lectures, course outline unclear
BY FAR the worst Prof I've ever had @ my 4 years @ UBC, she is unprofessional(ie. talks about students behind their backs), tardy (late almost every class & 15 mins late for our FINAL), lazy, boring, poorly organized & does NOT care about her student..
Her exams are intensely hard. But when it comes to help, she's always there, and she knows her stuff. She's the nicest prof I know. She may be out of town a lot but she still makes an effort to help you out.
She is really bad...her lectures are pointless, nothing she says in class are on the midterms, key is to try and memorize your whole text. Not very helpful at all when you try to contact her. Does not care about students....stay away from her
This was a terrible class. If I didnt go to class I probably would have ended up with the same grade. Pretty much every class consisted of presentations from others. The tests are of 5 (long) chapters each and you are tested on the most minute details.
Worst prof ever, she seems really nice and everything but she's not. When you ask her for help she kind of helps but in a really condescending manner. Her exams are brutal and are on the tiniest details. Her lectures don't help, it's all in the text.
Worst Prof! Very two-faced! Talks about students behind their backs. Says one thing but means the other. Not helpful, demeaning. Very conceited! Expects people to do well on her exams that are impossible and I my Average is 98% overall before her class!!
She is the best professor I have ever had. She is very helpful and extremely nice. Her exams are difficult but Dr. DeLongis can help you.
This class was by far the lowest mark I received at UBC, and not for lack of effort. Her classes are boring, she is not very helpful and away often, and the exams are based on minute details in the textbook. I didn't learn anything from this class.
I took this course a few years ago, and I agree with most of the previous comments. The prof went over 6 chapters in lecture, and left us to learn 8 more ourselves. At one point in the course, she was receiving hate mail from disgruntled students.
BORING. Not helpful either
Well, I had her for the DET version of Psyc 314 and that course is one of the best DET courses that I've ever taken.
I took her DET course...and it was the lowest mark I've had in my 3 years here at UBC. She seems helpful though, if you ask her a question.
An OK lecturer but the material is very, very boring, especially the textbook which we had to read. You either love or hate this course and I hated it. A lot of readings and notes to cover. Take abnormal psyc instead.
great course...i took the DET course...she was really helpful...textbook was interesting but repeatative...assignments were easy but the final was REALLY hard...tricky...final pulled my overall mark down...
worst prof ever. always away, talk the same thing thru 3 lectures and left us untaught chapters to be read. very unresponsible to student. and i think she should just do her clinical and forget about teaching, too bad to teach.
Online course is difficult to follow and assignments are poorly defined- by far the worst PSYC class I've ever taken.
Very helpful and easy to get a hold of. The assignments were easy but thought provoking, and she didn't give a specific format to write them in, so its all up to you. The exam was all MC based on text, but REALLY difficult - nitpicked the fine details!!
Took this by DET so I didn't have much contact with her. But she was awesome about some deadlines I missed. The final seemed brutal as others said, but I got an A- in this course with very little effort.
Great teacher. She really cares about her students. The assignments are interesting.
Great prof! I took her web course and she was an excellent teacher.
Great teacher. She is really nice and knows her stuff.
definitely knows her stuff...answers every questions thrown to her thoroughly...midterm m/c and short answer(even tho theyre kind of essay-type questions)
Great teacher! Very helpful to students.
Course was okay, but Exams are not fair and do not reward students for going to class. The multiple choice were very ambiguous. Prof was absent for the last 3 weeks, made the exam in 5 days, did not post some lecture slides until the day before the exam, and lots stuff in the text were not discussed
The exam was horrible. 100 MC questions that asked specifics, and focused on details from a 15 chapter textbook. Worst part is, you must pass the final exam before you get the credits.

I think she was pretty good..very very knowledgeable about health psych...she knows her stuff!! Goes through her slides in class, and theyre up on the web too. She can answer any question that comes her way and in full detail too. I liked her! M/C on tests pretty hard (all/none of the above)
Great teacher! She really knows her stuff.
Great web class.
Interesting, helpful, and knowledgable. Her health psych class is the best at UBC.
Excellent insturctor! Very Hot!!!
(online class) absolutely horrible prof. she expects everyone to be a science major, does not answer questions clearly, and lowers your self esteem. one prof that i actually hate.
She very informative and passionate about this subject. However, I don't find her teaching style compatible with me. She shows too many statistics and makes the course seem very dry.
She's the worst prof i have ever had in my 4 years of classes. She does not do anything for the class. She doesn't even check the forum online and takes ages to reply a simple email. How are we supposed to leran from that? Worst of all, she is not an easy marker which makes it all the more frustrating! Don't take her online course or u'll be screwe
I REALLY regret taking this course. I read all the chapters, study guides and did all the assignments and ended up getting a C+ because I failed to memorize all 500 pages of the textbook for the final MC exam. I can't really rate the prof for this course cause for the DE&T version she may as well have not existed.
stands out as one of the worst profs- im an a average student and received a horrible grade due to the fact that i couldnt list all of the specific criteria that she considered the right answer on exams- abrasive jarring voice- threw graph after graph of research findings at you- actually offensive at times
worst prof i have had in ubc so far. she spend 6 weeks on 1 chapter and rushed 3 chapters in 2 classes before the midterm. half the time she was absent and the class was taught by TAs or video. horrible attitude, unreasonable tests, useless notes, and cocky...we get it, you graduated from Berkeley, but you are still a horrible prof
spent 6 weeks on chp 1 and wasting time on hundreds of useless studies. right before the midterm she spent half a class on chap 3, and another class trying to cover ch4 and 5. When students asked her how are we responsible for materials we didnt go over in class, she replied "Im sure you're all great readers" why go to class anyways? worstprof ever
AVOID HER!!! Totally disorganized and ultra boring lectures.
I found this class so disorganized. The prof seemed to hate teaching as she allowed student presentations to take up about a quarter of the semester. It was next to impossible to tell what information we needed to know, and she only covered the topics she researches and left the rest for us to read by ourselves. SO DRY AND BORING.
She didn't seem interested in teaching, and she just had a lot of student and guest presentations. Impossible to know what to study for. Text book boring, her lecture boring. Avoid her.
She is friendly and helpful. The course material, however, is extremely dry; her lecture notes (powerpoint) are poorly organized; the course website is a mess; and the textbook is BRUTALLY boring. Exam m/c questions are fair, but the essay question portion was subject to overly picky marking (although I think that was the TAs fault).
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. don't even bother coming to class..she's the most pompous person ever. and she NEVER answers e-mails.
The worst course i took this year. She has no passion for teaching. Powerpoints are long, repetitive, disorganized and have no clear point; puts up tons of data that are hard to understand. $150 textbook was awful. Final had hard ambiguous essay questions. Too many student presentations. Only covers her pet research topics, and can be arrogant.
REALLY BAD!!! so unorganized. lectures totally boring and WAY TO LONG! so many useless graphs and overheads. awful prof..and not a very nice person either.
Great web instructor. Very available. Interesting course.
Great teacher, her course was very hard to get into, and i know why. Interesting material, and she's willing to help you out.
Difficult course but great prof. Powerpoints are all online so its really helpful for studying.
Her online course is one of the best out there, cause she actually takes the time to help students, unlike most profs. She'll talk to you on the phone or email if you want, and gives great advice on assignments.
Great Prof, especially at the grad level. Extremely supportive of her grad students, personally, academically, financially, and professionally. Always has her students' interests in mind.
Very hard class to get into, but the web class is great. Prof is really available, helpful, and nice.
The class is interesting and she is really knowledgable. If you ask her a question she goes out of her way to help.
Great teacher. Her class is one of the best I have taken. She is very knowledgeable, informative, and helpful.
very knowledgeable and helpful
excellent prof!
I have taken quite a few psychology courses at UBC and this one was BY FAR the worst one I've ever had. Dr. Delongis was the most nonengaging prof I've ever had, lecture notes were unorganised, and the final exam was impossibly vague. If you are interested in health psychology, save yourself and choose another prof!!
She's very knowledgeable in her area. I'm an avid studier, yet I find her final exam quite challenging. My advice is study hard for this class and you would be fine. This class was one of the tougher class I took this semester. It's a fair final exam. It's just very long.
excellent
I did not enjoy attending classes. Her notes are very disorganized and often posted days after class has finished. The notes are relatively useless (just key words or key phrases with no explanation, which is why I clicked Mandatory for attendance). Keeps talking about her prestigious education history more than I care about.
great course
Interesting class.
Prof. DeLongis is great. Her passion and enthusiasm come through in every class. My only complaints are regarding her slide use. It is an overwhelming amount of slides. 48 slides for a 50 minute class? They are so distracting I often miss what she is saying. Numbering them, and having dates on the files would be great too!
Frustratingly disorganized slides makes note taking next to impossible
Lectures are interesting and the exams are fair. She is always available.
what i like about her is that she brings a lot of recen stuies to class. dedicated and helpful prof. she might sound a lil dry but once u get to know her style, u will actually enjoy most of it. i like her as my prof.
For a health psychology course, you may think a paper will be involved but it wasn't. disappointed that course is based on 50%midterm, 50% final. u do bad on exams, you are basically screwed. A paper would have been nice to bring grade up a little.
Simply put the worst teacher @ UBC. Class is not hard if you read the text book and memorize details. I enjoied the numerous gust presentations than her lectures.
The woman is the least understanding and most unfair and snobby professor I have ever had. You are simply better off not asking any questions. Course is easy so long you read the textbook (which I found to be interesting) and know her notes inside out. Overall easy course but it would definitely be better if taken with a different instructor.
Good teacher!
Great prof
She had her lab manager or something in our class, and was DISGUSTINGLY biased. She even put his family photo up on one of the slides?!? Extremely monotonous, lectures are boring, avoid her as a prof if you would actually like to learn something about this subject.
Very knowledgeable about Health Psych. Approachable and helpful when asked. Overall a good teacher/prof
Read earlier comment about "her lab manager or something in our class, and was DISGUSTINGLY biased". Can't say I say any evidence of bias (familiarity yes, but no special favors). Generally a very interesting course with a very knowledgeable and approachable prof. Worth taking.
Very interesting subject matter, and the prof is clearly very knowledgeable about what she's teaching. In addition her lecturing is quite interesting and she's pretty funny. That being said, the tests were quite hard. With regard to the lab manager, i'm not sure how you can claim she's bias because she used his family photos..? quite slanderous...
One of the more interesting courses that I have taken. Very topical and relevant to a wide spectrum of interests - enjoyed the classes and looked forward to the presentations that often had a human / humorous element to them. Prof was engaging and approachable for help & direction. Tests were quite hard as were some assignments but not terribly so
Prof is up on the current research and uses many examples. Health Psychology is more interesting than I thought it would be.
Only psych course taken that had many practical applications to overall healthcare topics. Enjoyed the course and the prof who was generally enthusiastic and engaging in her lessons and in conversations. Assignments weren't difficult but read the textbook to do well on the tests.
Very hard course to get into, but really interesting prof.
I took this class online. She seemed to be quite helpful. BUT, she gives very vague instructions on the crucial paper. AND her exams are hard......Multiple choice but u had to literally memorize every single small detail in the text. The reading seemed very much common sense but the test is not so much common sense. Dont take it for granted
Good prof! She is really nice to students.
Great teacher. Really cares about her students.
awesome awesome and awesome!!!!!!!!!!!loved the course loved her!! she's really easy to listen to and the material is really interesting!!! take the course- with her of course!!
Great prof who uses up to date research. She really cares about her students and is an approachable prof to talk to. Although some say that health psych is pretty straight forward, I think it's a really applicable class and I enjoyed it. It's not too difficult either, but you do need to prepare for her tests.
Very clear and helpful. Two midterms and a final. Looks for ways to give you points on the short answer parts of the question and even fought UBC to get the mandatory curve grade raised so we didn't get scaled down.
Horrible lectures. Nice enough woman, however, be wary of your ears potentially bleeding from her continual insistence of youtube videos at maximum volume. Little to no explanation of exams, where lecture slides are not expanded upon. Requires little involvement and participation, but could have done much more with the material within the course.
Dr. Delongis is very nice. She communicates information very well and how she communicates it is easy to understand. I would definitely recommend taking a class with her.
Doctor DeLongis's class was interesting. She used up to date research, and her tests were fair (2 midterms, with mc and short answer + final). Make sure you pay attention in class particularly when she's explaining a study.
Interesting course with current Pysch and health topics. Instructor offered useful help when asked. Exams were relatively easy (if you familiarized yourself with the textbook and read the class notes).
Nice woman, but taking PSYC 314 with her was the worst decision I have ever made in my three years at UBC. The average for the midterm was disastrous (65ish). Thank god for the psyc scaling system.
Generally easy to understand class. Textbook material and lecture material are not the same though, so make sure you go to class and take notes on the studies she talks about. M/C section on midterms is based from textbook reading, written is based on lecture.
Very passionate about research in the field, and her lecturers were clear and interesting real-life applications were brought up. Friendly and approachable.
You can tell how passionate she is about the course. Need to attend class as written answers are based off lectures (mostly the studies - she does a lot), but MC is purely textbook. Read textbook and focus on the in-class studies, you'll do fine.
the best prof. she is amazing, cares whether or not students learn the materials, respectful and knowledgable, and last but not least so polite. I recommend her course!
She is an amazing prof. My favourite class by far. She is also so funny, although she may not realize it! Anyone who gives her a bad rating doesn't know what they're talking about. Anita and her daughter read these ratings, so thanks for being a great prof! PLEASE teach more courses! Exams are fair, know all the studies! Overall, pretty easy class.
This course was essentially a do-it-at-your-own-pace sort of style. No discussion forums, just a couple assignments along the way. Online modules are alright - they're not absurdly long or anything. A lot of it is just regurgitating material from the textbook itself, which I feel spends too much time on mental disorders.
Self-paced course, totally reasonable due dates. prof and TA are both quick in their responses. However, the description in assignment requirements weren't very helpful at first sight.
I really liked the textbook (really that's all there is to this online course), and the assignments were fair. It is an incredibly easy; HOWEVER, the class is so easy, you may be scaled down considerably (to the tune of 5-8%) at the end of the term. It is intended for interdisciplinary engagement, so there is something for everyone.
The lecture notes are super confusing and frustrating, they are not detailed whatsoever and its so hard to understand when you go home and try and look them over for exams. They make NO sense which is frustrating because on exams the written portion is based on lecture notes..
Lovely lady. Spunky, funny and helpful. Class is quiet interesting and useful. The only neg thing : there were way to0 many "out there" studies presented. It's confusing, especially because you must vomit them all out on the midterms. Make sure to make a list and read them thoroughly on your own time. But otherwise, great class.
Clear expectations, you can tell she really knows her material. Anita is always prepared well for class, is humorous and generally the lectures are very interesting and informative. Gives good feedback if you ask for it and is very approachable.
She is a very nice professor and I really like her as a person. You can tell that she is the coolest prof/mom to her grad students. The only thing disappointing about her is that her lectures are completely different from the textbook and studying for the exam was completely a self-guided experience. Down to earth prof but poorly organized course.
Anita was a great prof: engaging in lectures, well organized, and a very fair test writer. Attendance is not necessary at all, but if you do go, thats pretty much all the studying you need to do, other that reading the text book. The material of this class is very intuitive, and she tells you exactly what exam essay Qs will be!
Took in as an online course during the summer. Two assignments and a final (100 multiple choice questions). As others have mentioned, it is a self-paced course with reasonable due dates. However, finding articles and thinking of topics for the assignments are rather tricky.
Currently taking 314 with Anita and I'm absolutely enjoying her lectures. She is an amazing prof that delivers materials clearly and effectively. She is very approachable and takes the time to address her student's concerns/q's. Her class is turning out to be my favourite class this semester and I'm looking forward to her lectures.
THE BEST PROF EVER. She is the coolest prof/mom, she is extremely kind, funny and caring, she is very well organized, she knows the material and teaches soooo WELL. I enjoyed every minute of the class, I learned so much and I kinda wana take it again:D Take the class with her and you won't regret it (I promise you).Thank you, Dr. Anita.
Words would never be enough to express how amazing Anita is as a prof and as a person. She is incredibly smart and funny. Her class was the highlight of my semester. Exams were not hard as long as you read the textbook and pay attention in class. Take her class, I guarantee you that it would change your outlook toward your health/lifestyle.
This was my first online course and I'm happy with it! 3 assignments and a final worth 50% that is solely based on the textbook. The course is self-paced and there are 15 chapters to read so it's important to stay on track. The assignments were interesting to do but set aside time for them because finding the articles is tricky.
Im sure as an in class prof she would be great, however I would recommend not taking her online course. The main issue is her lecture slides, its the most bare bones template ever! you need to make your own notes which takes an insane amount of time since each chapter is 30-pages with like 11-size font. If you take the class, take it in class...
I took this course online and wouldn't recommend it. She may be a good lecturer in person, but her online PowerPoints are not very helpful as they are very basic. Her instructions are not always clear and her expectations can be confusing. Make sure to read the assignment instructions carefully, because important things are often hidden.
3 papers (10%, 15% & 25%) which are all decently easy. Final is worth 50% and you must pass the final in order to pass the class. If you have bad time management skills and don't do the scheduled textbook readings as suggested, you will have to read 15 chapters for the final.. all the material is very specific so you cant really cram for it.
I took this course online and if you have the time management skills and are comfortable writing papers-DO IT ONLINE. I left the class with over a 70 after having to play catch up. Work HARD on the papers- this means bug the hell out of the TA and Prof over assignment details. Don't get behind on the readings! And the practice quizzes help TONS!
This is one of the best structured online classes at UBC. Requirements and instructions are clear, and online material matches the textbook perfectly. If you follow along with the learning outcomes online, do all the readings, and put in a solid few hours work on the 3 papers, you'll do great in this class.
don't bother going to class because you'll just look at slides and slides of graphs which have enough detail to look at at home. I skipped class regularly and didn't go for two weeks straight one time and I didn't miss anything. Make sure you read the textbook because all MC questions are based on that, and understand the themes from lecture.
I took this class online and found it very demanding. The reading schedule was pretty heavy with 15 chapters in a 13 week course. Grades were based on 3 written assignments including a 5 page literature review and the final exam. Power points that were posted were not helpful at all so I felt like I was paying $600 to teach myself.
The class overall was pretty simple and in all honesty she barely was active within our class. She would answer emails on time and quickly but for the most part her TAs did the majority of the grading of our papers and the the final was automatically marked by canvas. This class is also heavy in reading so be prepared to read a lot.
Dr. DeLongis really cares about her students. Throughout the online course (no set lecture times), she was very responsive to emails and took time to meet with me over Zoom several times. I highly recommend staying involved and up to date with the content (i.e. readings), as it's hard to cram for the exams. Taking the practice quizzes helps a lot!
Absolutely must take a class with her! She is the smartest prof at UBC, is up to date on all research (and can explain its evolution over time as she was around in the beginning), she cares so much about psychology, and will meet with you over zoom WHENEVER to help with what you need. She is trying to teach you, not trick you, best prof ever
Dr. Delongis is one of the smartest profs at UBC without a doubt. She is kind and caring but quick to call you out need be. She's an extremely good individual to network with and her courses are designed to help you succeed. We had weekly discussions, and two major assignments. Shes also very encouraging and helpful!
