She is an awesome teacher! If you are interested in animals and their behaviors and random facts then you'll love this class. You do have to memorize a lot, but it's easy to memorize because it's logic. Her midterms and final are just like her lectures. SHe has guest lecturers that also make it fun! no lab! no book! no reader! enjoy!
Great teacher. Go to lecture and take good notes. All exam material is from lecture. There is a huge group project that's not very difficult as long as you stay on top of things. Whatever you do don't procrastinate!!!
Great Professor! Lectures are very interesting. There are two essays, two midterms, and one final. Essays and midterms are each worth 15% of your grade and the final is cumulative and worth 30%. Discussion is required and worth 10%. As long as you go to every lecture, take notes and study the handouts, you'll do fine.
I LOVE HER!!!!! I have to say, she is one of the best teachers I've had at Davis. I love attending her lectures and the class isn't too hard. Just go to all the lectures, and review all the notes and handouts before the midterms and you're good to go. She's super helpful too. Even with stuff not related to class. TAKE HER CLASS! SHE'S WONDERFUL!!!
A really worth-while class. Enjoyed it immensely. Sometimes test q's were tricky (a,b,c, a or b, a or c) but overall not too bad. She was very enthusiastic in class and eager to answer questions. A few of the guest lectures made me want to shoot myself. class is fair and interesting. whatever you do, turn off your cell phones- she'll flip out!
A very good professor! Sometime shes called the female equivalent of Prof. Famula, maybe not exactly the same but almost. Shes a great lecturer and has many funny side stories that she brings up. The material taught is very interesting, just make sure to study over the notes hardcore for the tests, then youll do fine.
She's a great teacher. You will be tested based on materials from lecture and discussion. Be sure to know your lecture notes inside out and you'll be fine. Her final was all multiple choice and helped put my final grade to A-. I highly recommend her.
Oberbauer is one of the many great animal science teachers at UCD. Her tests are free response with paragraph long answers but as long as you study they are not impossible. The group project is long and huge but you have to whole quarter to work on it, so you should actually use the whole quarter to work on it or you'll be screwed at the end.
Dr. Oberbauer really helps students out from their perspective, and easy to talk to!! Very helpful in office hours, even for things not related to her class. I also did a DHC honors contract with her, which was very helpful in doing my senior practicum for abi major. We are fortunate to have such amazing professors at UCD (and ANS department). =)
Oberbauer is a good lecturer and has a good sense of humor and will sometimes tell funny or interesting stories. Her tests are mostly MC with fill-ins and short answers. The class isn't hard. Just pay attention in lecture and review your notes. Two papers, two midterms - you can opt out on ONE but the other three will be worth more.
Oberbauer is phenominal. She's extremely knowledgeable and is very sympathetic to the student. ANS42 works as a sci-eng. requirement filler, and it's not that hard.
very understanding and knowledgeable professor
She's very knowledgeable & interesting material. Love domestic animals? Take the class to learn alot! General info, nothing too in depth. Tests are tricky, multiple choice. Study everything said in class, even small jokes, they could be EXTRA CREDIT. Get TAs to grade your papers so you can get As on them. You can opt out of one midterm or paper!
Great professor but 142 is NOTHING like her 42 class. Got an A in 42 but a C+ in 142! Lectures seemed simple but I felt like exams were unfair and EXTREMELY DETAILED compared to lectures! Basically wrote ESSAYS. Hated all of the tests and you have to do a group project. Otherwise, she's very nice and approachable.
Oberbauer is a great teacher! BUT her tests are really tricky. consist of a lot of questions like: a.) I, II, and III are true b.)I is true II and III are false...you get the hint. You don't need to buy the book. lectures arent posted online so attendance is mandatory.
Oberbauer is a great teacher! BUT her tests are extremely tricky. Lectures arent posted online, and dont buy the book cause you wont need it. If you're a responsible person and always go to class..you'll do fine in this class.
Oberbauer was very knowledgeable and the lecture was set up well. Just study the lecture material very very well for the test. It's not as easy as it seems, as there are a lot of details that need to be memorized. Overall, good class.
Professor is extremely knowledgeable about the subject. However tests were way too detailed for the amount of information given in class as well as graded very harshly. Papers and exams returned very late. Overall great teacher but class was just so so.
Excellent teacher! She really knows her material. I looked forward to her class every time! Her tests are tricky (in a SAT similar format and wording is very sophisticated) I recorded her lectures to study with and that helped out ALOT because she tests on details and has guest speakers. Attendance is mandatory so I recommend that.
anita's lectures were interesting and fun. exam questions were easy but VERY TRICKY. papers were okay, graded harder than i thought. scores were returned late. discussion mandatory, guest lectures were good & poor. with curve, you still can do well.
Nice lady = easy lectures. Buttload of PreVet students = No Curve. In short, if your looking for an easy A and do not have mass knowledge of animals like Vet students, I would not recommend you take this class. No matter how cute Companion Animals sounds, don't. P.S do not feed hamsters bananas, they die.
Be warned this class is a trick. I signed up for this course with high hopes and expectations to work/play with animals. Let's just say it was ten weeks of utter dissapointment. Although one time she shared her pet rats with the entire class. My friend and I immediately jumped up in ecstacy to see live animals. Turns out it was just for pretend. ><
Very helpfull and aprochable.
Professor Oberbauer is just an amazing teacher. She is cute and quirky with her invisible animals and her lovely drawings. But it is important to her that we understand, and the phrase she says most often is, "Does that make sense?" I would really recommend her for animal science student.
AMAZING professor and lecturer. She really keeps students interested and makes sure they understand the material. Even if you are not a ans major, she totally gets you interested in the material. The only downfall was not receiving tests and papers back for a few weeks. TOTALLY RECOMMEND. Book is not necessary, so you have to go to class.
I loved this class!! Professor speaks with great clarity and really gets her students interested in the subjects she discusses. However, the tests were extremely tricky and a little difficult. They are graded very strictly so it's important to know your stuff! Overall, a great class.
Great class and great professor! However, you must have an interest in animals to succeed..don't think it is an easy GE. Tests are challenging, but just make sure you take good notes and memorize everything. Papers are pretty straightforward too, and the TAs help you out with revising the drafts before turning it in. GREAT CLASS!
She's one of the best lecturer at UCD! Her class is very enjoyable. The only problem I have with her is that her tests are not tricky or difficult, but she wants DETAILS! Lots of them! Questions are really straightforward, but you must write in every single thing she said about that topic. She really wants you to understand the materials!
lectures were random facts trivia, stories but then expected essay, detailed answers on tests. hard to do when you dont have a general background in what she lectured about. i dont know why ppl love her, she's nice but i didnt learn much other than random facts. honestly i cant even say what theclass was about cuz lectures were all over the place.
Really Great lecturer, but you have to get the notes for every lecture (go to every class) because she tends to put something from every lecture. So definitively study but not too much needed. Also you can tell she used to be really good lucking back in the day, because she looks good now!
test is hard.Project is useless
She is a GREAT lecturer. Tere is no book required for the class so you MUST go to every lecture. All the tests are straight from the lectures. 2 midterms, 2 papers, and a final. She lets you opt out of a paper or a midterm. Very approachable and very knowledgeable about the topics. Very exciting and enthusiastic lecturer!
Excellent lecturer. cares about students' learning. 2 papers, 2 exams (option to not do 1 of the 4). she brings in many specialized guest lecturers (they're pretty great). very informative during lectures and exams come directly from them. must attend discussions. relatively high average so probably not a big curve. i enjoyed every bit.
Her class was entertaining, but then again, how can it not be when you're talking about puppies and kittens? The mandatory discussions were okay, but didn't really add that much to the class. MUST attend lectures because the tests come straight from the notes, not from the book (which she encouraged us not to buy). It was overall a good class.
She's clear in lecture; one of the most common phrases you'll hear is "does that make sense?" There are two midterms and two papers, with the option to not do one and have the others weigh more on your grade. The discussions are mandatory, but don't add much in my opinion. She doesn't use the book, so you have to go to every lecture.
The tests were difficult, like they were made to trick you. I'm an A/B student and getting a C was a shock to me. However, it has more to do with percentages than anything. Discussion is mandatory - 10% of your overall grade. I think she is an excellent teacher and the class is very informative. Would recommend if you find the subject interesting.
Great teacher! Hand wrote notes on blackboard. Explained things clearly and enthusiastically. Loved what she was doing. Favorite teacher of the quarter.
Lectures are more scattered than her 42 class, making it hard to take notes. The exams are 6-7 pages of fill in essays, which is very difficult to finish in 1 hour. Group project sucked, especially because there wasn't a prompt or guideline for you to know what to include in it. However, shes super enthusiastic and an overall nice person.
Dr. O is an amazing professor, and Animal Science 42 is a very interesting and enjoyable class. Dr. O explains the material in a way that makes sense, and she certainly knows how to keep us awake and interested! She is always asking: "does that make sense?" "is that clear?". She is also a very fair grader, and can really help you if you go to OH.
I loved this class! Although some of the material is a little confusing to learn, Oberbauer made sure to spend multiple lectures on those topics so we could understand it. Also, her tests are tricky but if you take good notes in class and study the material for a few hours, they're not difficult! I would definitely take another class from her!
Have taken 2 classes w/ Dr O. Project in 142 was so stupid. Little guidance even in office hrs. Worked our butts off & she did not give us a fair grade. Her tests are ridiculous to finish in the time you get. Info overlapped 42 a LOT. Waste of my time but had to take it for my specialization. Would have changed spec. just to get out of this class
LOVED. This class is relatively easy to do well in if you put in the work. That means staying current on lectures and studying before exams. Nothing crazy! Her first midterm exam was too long for the time permitted so she altered Midterm 2 and it was great! Yes, the group project totally blows but she grades well if you do thorough work.
She is the sweetest professor. One the first day I was intimidated but she's so sweet during office hour. She doesn't do powerpoint lecture, she uses the whiteboard. Similar teaching style with Famula. I really liked the class. I don't think she posted the podcasts. Everything she says is important.
Tests aren't tough, she just expects you to know every little thing despite the fact you clearly know the material. Super vague group project had no relation to the class post-week 1. Basically the worst group project experience I've had at UCD. She's nice but this group project had no benefit to about 90% of the class. I would switch specializatio
I like her as a person, but her lectures are extremely disorganized. Expects you to remember every detail for tests. Class was a waste of time.
Lovely personality but horrible exams (2 mid/1 final). Tip: Just know everything. There's one, long, cringeworthy, & unnecessary group project (presentation/business proposal). You may hate more people @ the end. The class is curved (top 15% get some form of an A). There are quizzes in disc so be prepared! Record her lectures. No required textbook.
Got A in all the midterms and final (need to know every single thing she said), and still got a B at the end! Why? because of the useless group project, which wasted my time + effort. Some people in my group waited until 2 days before the deadline to finish the project, even though i texted + reminded them. Hate this class in general! gee!
For this course you have to take notes and pay attention through the whole lecture if you want to do well, no slacking. Office hours are very helpful. For the group project you have to create your own business related to companion animals. Make sure your group starts working immediately and stay organized like you would in the real business world.
This class was fun because Professor Oberbauer was genuinely interested in the subject she was teaching. She always answered everyone's questions and looked up the answers and brought them to class the next time if she didn't know. The discussions are pointless but it's a fun class if you are interested in animals.
Dr. O is awesome! I took her companion animal bio class. She definitely makes you work hard in the class if you want to get an A, but the material is interesting and she is very helpful in office hours. I will definitely be taking her again!
I love her Lecture!
This is one of the best classes I've ever taken at Davis. Not only is Anita excellent at explaining concepts, the content of the class itself was so interesting. 2 midterms, 2 papers, (1 of those 4 can be opted out of) discussion homework, and a final. I'd definitely recommend this class as a GE to anyone. I mean, it's about puppies and kittens!
Great professor, lectures are really interesting and by the end of the quarter you definitely walk out with a better understanding of companion animals. The only problem is there's only so much you can test students on so some test questions pertain to relatively obscure details, so you have to study hard.
Love her! Lectures were great and she keeps you interested in the subject at hand.- very enthusiastic. Would love to have her as a professor again
Great lecturer, makes class very entertaining and memorable. However, the class covers a lot of material, so it does require a lot of studying. Also, she tends to test on obscure details, which makes knowing what to study difficult and means that you really need to be in class and writing every little thing down, even stories and anecdotes.
Great lectures, she is clearly very knowledgeable about the material. Tests are based on material but are very tricky. Have to know material very well to do well on exams since she tries to trick you. Papers are interesting but need appropriate time since big part of grade, but can raise your grade by doing them.
2 papers & 2 midterms worth 15% each of your grade, or you have the option of dropping one assignment, then the 3 assignments are worth 20% towards final grade. Her lectures are material heavy, but very clear and include good helpful info. Discussions are mandatory if you want the full 10% of grade. Final exam is worth 30% and cumulative.
Very interesting class. Dr. Oberbauer is so sweet and funny. Tests are definitely harder than the material makes them seem. I would not opt out of doing one of the two papers as they are easy points - as long as you can write halfway decent. As others have said, the tests can be insanely specific and difficult to study for. Fun class, in any case.
I enjoyed this class and her teaching style made it easy to understand the material. Exams are definitely meant to trick you, you have to know every single detail. Overall great professor.
She is an amazing professor, very energetic & gives the information in a simplified way. The tests first come off as easy but be sure to take time understanding the questions. Some answers/questions may sound right but include a piece that makes it wrong. Esp true of T or F questions. Most info is directly from lecture; would be wise to attend.
One of the best professors I've had!! Her lectures are amazing and interesting so one hour goes by pretty fast. She uploads podcasts online and if you re-listen to the pod casts and take detailed notes, you should be fine for the tests. Sometimes tests are written to trick you so read questions/ answers carefully!
I got above 90 for both midterms and a 78 on the paper which makes me struggle. Ive never gotten writing grades lower than B+ but the writing assignment is too irrelevant to the course and graded harshly (legislation??) anyway tests are fair and based on lecture & handouts, come to lecture because its tougher listening to podcast at home.
The professor herself is very intellegent. However, the tests are extremely detail specific and are made to trick you. You can know the material but if you question yourself during exams (like I do) then you will get tripped up. It is relatively harder because of this than most beginning level courses with average assignment grades suprisingly low.
One of the best lecturers at Davis. Her lectures are not screen recorded but it's sound recorded. If you miss a lecture and you don't listen to it, you're missing a ton of information. It's basically straight memorizing but her tests are extra hard. Loved her though as a teacher. Hate the TA's though. They grade super hard.
I absolutely LOVE Dr. O. I looked forward coming to her class to learn something new about companion animals, and the way she teaches the material is easy to retain and hilarious. She always has me dying of laughter in that class. However, discussions honestly are something else. The TA's grade ridiculously harsh on the papers, so beware of them.
Prof. Oberbaur was honestly one of the best lecturers I have had. Never felt bored in her lectures. Not an easy A but doable, some classmates that weren't science majors said they struggled abit with the biology/ genetics material. 2 midterms, 2 essays each 15% of grade but you can choose to do only 3 of those, each 20% of grade. No curve.
Professor O. was a pretty average professor. Average and very intelligent, but the actual class material wasn't super engaging or challenging. The tests felt as though they were designed to trick you (tricky, multi-part multiple choice). Discussions were fun, but there weren't many. Overall, decent.
Very understanding professor and extremely accommodating. Her lectures were very entertaining and she had a few guest speakers. Two papers and two exams, but you could choose to skip one of them.
3 Tests 50 questions in 50 minutes cannot go back to questions once answered. 2 short essays (graded tough). She does not drop anything. 1 essay broken up into three parts graded very harshly with board instructions. Lectures are fine and discussion as well.
Dr. O is an amazing professor who really knows what she's talking about! Learning all about the biology of companion animals was easy with her introducing the material through easy-to-follow lectures that you don't have to attend live. Weekly discussions were fun, and the involvement helped to retain more information! Overall favorite class at UCD
Dr.O is so sweet, and her lectures are really enjoyable. Her tests do feel tricky sometimes but you can make an appointment to go over them with her and it really helps you learn her testing style. She also offers fun citizen science-based extra credit. There is a large writing assignment but it is broken into three parts so it's not that bad.
Dr. O is a fantastic professor. She was incredibly accommodating and her lectures were such a joy to watch. She is a lot of fun and truly cares for her students . Quizzes were fairly straightforward but the wording could get tricky. Discussion worksheets had a lot of reading but it wasn't too bad. Wish I could take this class again!!
I think this class is not fair. After receiving my final grade, I emailed the prof. I just want to see my final exam. But she even doesn't respond to me. I got 94%, 86%, and 90% on the three quizzes. But I only got 74% on the final exam. That's unbelievable. And my TA gave the same content with a lower score in my final submission. Is it fair??????
I did not enjoy Dr.O's teaching at all. Lectures were interesting at times but a lot of the time the slides were packed with a lot of information that she rushed through. Additionally, quizzes were worded in really tricky and confusing ways and we did not have access to them afterwards so it felt like there was no accountability in grading.
ANS 42 was fine, but not a personal favorite. The material given to us during lectures was very easy to understand, but then the tests felt as if you were being tricked. AThe questions on the exams were worded a little funny, so that made selecting an answer choice more difficult. The writing assignment was graded harshly, especially on the outline
Dr. O had very interesting lectures. Her quizzes are a bit tricky with the wording, so be sure to read each question carefully. Overall she is a pretty nice lady and she gives extra credit! The final essay grading was a lot more harsh than the intermediate submissions, so be careful with that (graded by the TAs)
I didn't enjoy Dr.O's teaching at all, she just read the slides that were packed with a lot of info. lecture contents are loosely organized, quizzes were worded in really tricky, ridiculous grading scale, TA graded really harsh on papers, tons of reading and worksheets for each week's dis.
I enjoyed being in this class! Tests will have tricky wording, so you need to make sure that you read each question VERY CAREFULLY. Papers are okay, but graded pretty heavily. Try to make rough drafts as close to the final product as possible. Baseline - this is relatively easy class if you put in the work and are thorough
Lecture heavy, but recorded/interesting. Take notes: some things are not on slides. Attendance required for discussions. There are 2 papers, but you can do just one. You can either do all 2 midterms and 2 papers or choose 3.TAs grade the papers, but if you respond to feedback, you should get a good score. Exams are closed-note on Canvas.
I enjoyed ANS42 a lot. I had some confusion with one of the midterm but Dr. O was so nice that she scheduled a private session with me to go over the questions I was confused on. Dr. O reply to email fairly quickly and I think everything in her class make sense. Even at time when I'm confused with the lecture, you can go up to her after lecture.
Dr. Oberbauer is an enthusiastic and fun lecturer. She is very sweet and patient, and was always willing to answer questions during lecture. The material is interesting and it's a great intro class. My only complaint is that sometimes her exam questions had poor/confusing wording. The papers were graded pretty harshly, but that was the TAs.
I think that Prof O is really sweet & genuinely enjoys teaching ANS. I do think that her exam questions can be a bit tricky & she makes things harder than they need to be. This review is mostly about her TA's, not helpful at all & do not give any helpful feedback for essays, also do not respond to emails well.
Really interesting and engaging lectures, she made it really easy to pay attention. Midterms had some tricky wording so be wary of that. Graded on 2 midterms, 2, papers and a final with the option to do 3/4 + final or 4/4 + final. Ended up doing well on both midterms and the first paper so I didn't do the last paper. Solid class overall.
Really nice and her lectures are simple and clear. Workload is manageable. However, no matter how well you know the material, the test questions are often unclear in what they're asking, leading you to miss questions that you know on exams. Also, she tries to pack way too much into every lecture, so which info is need-to-know is sometimes unclear.
I loved Professor, her lectures were very clear and fun to attend. The class has two midterms, two papers, and eight discussion worksheets. The midterms were online and had some very tricky questions that really make you think. The papers are graded by TA and are what really brought my grade down, but you have the option of dropping one assignment.
super sweet, one of the best professors ive ever had. she makes the lectures go by quick because of how animated and engaging she is.
Really fun, engaging lectures, but the class is run horribly. Formatting for discussion worksheets and lecture notes are terrible. Heaviest workload for a gen ed that I've ever had. Online exams are 50 minutes for 50 questions that, most of the time, are unclear/tricky. TAs don't respond to emails and one grades super harshly and takes attendance??
Dr. O is such an enthusiastic professor and I really enjoyed her class and lectures. 2 midterms and 2 essays (4th assignment is optional). My TA was amazing too and she provided lots of helpful feedback on my essay and assignments, but the midterms are tricky and overthinking can hurt your score.
Dr.O was obviously passionate about what she teaches and is hilarious! She is a kind and interesting lecturer. Only thing I would critique are her test questions. Very random and worded in confusing and unfair ways compared to how she teaches in class. The material was simple and easy to learn, but the test questions would drop my grade.
She is so passionate about what she teaches and engagingly presents material. Tests are online and lectures are recorded. Watch out for the reptile guest lecture, absolutely loved that lecture.
Absolutely loved her class! However, this class goes through a lot of material and is pretty in depth. Do not fall behind. In order to do well, you need to put in the time to study after class. Also, there are some papers you have to write, but they are not bad and were honestly grade boosters for me. Absolutely the most knowledgable and fun profs!
She said she would curve. But she didn't. Canvas grade is not accurate. Nice professor, with fair grading criteria (do 2 midterms & 1 writing assignment or 2 writing assignments & 1 midterm), but midterm questions are confusing. Fair/lenient TA is what makes your grade. Discussion assignments were stressful cuz had to turn in 15 min after disc.
Genuinely an enjoyable class and professor! The lectures were easy to understand and fun, midterms weren't that bad and material was in lectures so study from lecture notes well. There was a couple assignments that helped boosted my grade too.
Prof O is super passionate about the course material. While her tests can be tricky, her engaging lectures are worth attending. I found unstuckstudy and the class notes really helpful for exam prep.
She was a good professor, talked pretty quickly but was good at explaining things. Her tests had some awful questions that seemed like they were meant to trick you. Your grade is determined by your TA, so hope you have a good one.
Lectures were lengthy and full of information. Professor Oberbauer is clearly passionate about the topic and makes sure to go in depth in regards to that. However, the tests are weirdly worded, and can cause mistakes that will make your grade on the exam drop. Majority of your grade is from the discussions and your TA, and all exams were online.
Overall fine class, material is easy. Discussion assignments are busy work and not really related to lecture at all. Lectures are kind of boring and you will be just fine looking at the slides + listening to the recording. Exams are annoyingly worded very weird and every question is a trick question basically.
Lectures are entertaining and interesting. Midterm questions can be confusing and contain errors without any curve/questions dropped which can be frustrating. Writing assignments and discussion worksheets are graded by TAs and determine a large part of your grade. Should've been an easy A, but most people I knew got a B/A- for trivial reasons.
The lectures themselves were pretty much everything on the slides. However, she adds her passion to the lecture, and it's just nice to see she's doing something she likes. For assignments, discussion worksheets are every week and take a lot of time, writing assignments have peculiar prompts, and the midterm/final are full of trick questions. Study.
I don't recommend if you need above a 3.7 for med/grad school because the tests (1 or 2 midterms and a final) are designed to trick you and have multiple answers depending on the context you choose. If you don't need a super high gpa and are okay with a B/B+ go for it because that's what pretty much everyone gets due to how stuff is graded.
I loved the lectures, they were really interesting. However, I hated the writing assignments. They were graded really toughly and the TA was more strict than the professor. Discussions seemed a little pointless because we had to do all the readings at home and do the assignments at home but we had to attend discussions for the TA to briefly explai
Very funny and genuine professor! Talked to students before and after lectures and was friendly! Don't recommend as a GE cause it may be a lot of writing. I took ANS1 and much of the content overlapped so the topics weren't too difficult. Questions on exams are worded WEIRD. Make sure to read them slowly and don't overthink.
Professor Oberbauer is very passionate about animals and a great lecturer. If I could just attend her lectures for fun, I absolutely would. Unfortunately, the grade is entirely dependent on your TA, to the extent that some TAs make decisions that are completely contrasting with what the Professor has stated. Love Dr Oberbauer though, recommend.
Lectures were interesting and I really liked the professor but, as other reviews mentioned, your grade is dependant on your TA and mine pissed me tf off and graded super harshly with little feedback or explanations.
For a 2 unit class, the amount of essays is insane. The grading of the essays are so tough, but I believe it is the TAs grading them. Lectures are fine, and she is a good lecturer.
lectures were fun to attend and shes a good speaker but when it comes to assignments, the discussion worksheets are quite a lot of typing/writing to complete in an hr (theyre due by the end of the disc. session), also the essays are graded kind of harshly, exams were virtual but had a few trick questions and lots of them have 5 options instead of 4
