She's funny, challenging and intelligent. Readings are pretty difficult, but once you get the hang of it, the assignments don't seem so hard. Some readings are repeated if you take both classes. Most of the TAs for her classes aren't that good, though.
The most amazing prof Ive had. Wonderfully blends course material with a fantastic reader and even better TAs. This class should be mandatory for all students
She rocks. Smart, engaging and definitely challenging. I never had to think so hard.

Anjali is Awesome!
Anjali is my favorite professor in the department. She needs to teach more classes! Much more interesting and intense than most, be prepared for dense readings and such. A lot of people struggle with her class, but I found it challenging in a good way.
Anjali's amazing use of the F word (with her Dutchess of Windsor accent) makes all of her lectures highly engaging. It's never the same old P.C crap with Anjali, her insights are truly ground-breaking and radical. This class changed my life.
Great professor. Will push you much harder than most profs at Santa Cruz. I was expecting to hate this required course, but ended up loving it (her accent doesn't hurt).
amazing. she incorporates current issues into her lecture everyday and doesn't let you get stuck in the ivory tower
She's the best prof at UCSC--energetic, exciting and very very entertaining.
she's very difficult, but so good. the class was very interesting and her lectures were extremely helpful with understanding the readings. also, her accent is amazing...
she was great, difficult but amazing. its worth it
anjali... i miss you, i havent had a class with anjale for three years... but i still see her in the halls of the womens studies (now feminist studies- thanks anjali!!!!!) department. served as my introduction to feminist theories. always an excellent class with anjali. (and i want to have her babies)
Anjali is an awesome INTELLEGENT Professor. She is truely well versed in her discipline. The material she chooses for her course is phenominal.

she's an amazing lecturer with an awesome sense of humor. The class I took from her was the best combination-the material was intense, thought-provoking and difficult but the grading was easy-going.
Anjali's classes are thought-provoking and engaging. Both classes I took with her were, to date, the best Women's Studies classes I've taken at UCSC. I highly recommend her. Her lectures are lively, interesting and entertaining. I only wish she were more approachable.
she's an inspiring teacher.
She's not easy on her students, but it's totally worth it. She pushes her students to a much deeper understanding and questioning of the material, instead of a surface knowledge.
Amazing teacher--Thoughtful, energetic and kicks ass.
Anjali kicks ass; namely yours--but it's totally worth it!
Oh man..she's easy to get intimidated with, but once you're over that you realize how passionate she is about the subjects and truly how much she knows about this. She pushes you to the limit...AWESOME!
she's brilliant, it's pretty hot. one can learn so much from her!

An incredibly passionate and challenging teacher. Every class just added a new perspective to the way I can examine things. She really pushed everyone to think and think for ourselves. I loved Fem of Global South and am looking forward to taking classes led by her in the future.
Really, the most unprepared professor I've ever had.
Some might think Anjali comes off as arrogant and pretentious, but even if her personality/teaching style might give off this impession, her lectures are still brilliant. Very passionate about the subject!
Prof Arondekar is mind blowing! She is such a great lecturer, really knows her stuff, and absolutely the most engaging professor. I went into this class without any FMST background, it has been a huge contribution to my own major. The TA I had wasn't so great though, other than that I really enjoyed her class!
Great teacher! Anjali will definately make you think critically about things and if you don't you'll just write off the class as "brainwashing". The homework is just reading with a couple essays midterm and final. If you do all or most of the readings and go to class you'll probably get an A!
Anjali is the most amazing and life changing professor I have had in my entire academic career. She's incredibly motivating and challenging.
she's clearly a brilliant woman, but sometimes its really hard to understand what shes talking about.
Amazing teacher. Very interesting reading. One of the most engaging lecturers I have ever had.
Anjali is amazing; she takes her work seriously, and takes her students seriously. You know that one student in the class that always answers the rhetorical questions? Yeah, that won't happen in Anjali's class, thank god. She won't take crap, that's for sure--amazing class, highly recommend her. Try to get Lindsey Collins as your TA!
Arondekar is hard, but very engaging. Her brilliance is sexy and her lectures are eye-opening. She clearly knows what she is talking about and does well at getting people to understand and question. I didn't like the class at first because you really have to engage, but by the end, I was in love with the class and her. Marry me Anjali?
Do not take this class if you're not already interested in Feminism. Anjali is brillant, but I barely passed and was confused constantly. Not an intro class, so it was hard to understand since I had no foundation in feminism and I'm a science major. She's a genius, but the class should only be for people considering feminist studies as a major.
WOW, she showed up infrequently, spoke entirely too fast, and just chatted the entire lecture. No lecture notes, no writing on the board NOTHING. She's an intelligent lady, but a poor professor.
coming into this class i had a slight interest in feminism. i am more confused now than i was at the beginning. you really have to wrap your head around what she says in lecture. do the readings or else!
Would not take this class again if I had to do it over again! (And I got a good grade!)
I felt obligated to post here after reading the bad reviews from others. Anjali doesn't "give" you lecture notes because she wants you to synthesize the information before writing it down. She showed up to every lecture when I took the class, apart from the two video showings. Take this class only if you are serious about reshaping your worldview.
One of the most intelligent, eye-opening people I've ever encountered.
Omg you all are just a bunch of jaded freshmen if you think that Anjuli's teaching is so revolutionary and eye-opening. This woman is extremely biased and is very unapologetic about it. She could be a much better teacher if she kept her opinions to herself, as I thought it did nothing to enhance the material. Easy class. Got an A despite her rants.
Love her & the subject. She maintained a great amount of objectivity, never imposing (& rarely interjecting) her own opinions. She's very knowledgeable, quite funny at times, & encourages everyone to explore their own opinions. She could be a bit intimidating & I wish she were more accessible outside of class, but her lectures cover everything.
I learned a lot in this class and the professor really challenges their students. One of the best classes I've taken.
awesome lecturer with an effective pedagogy. she made the material comprehensible with articulation of readings and relation to personal and current political examples. TA's graded pretty easy, i mean sh!t we had no sections. straightforward w/ midterms and final, just read (the reading's awesome.) take this classs SO GOOD not BS like most of UCSC
Difficult class but has opened me up to many different ways of seeing.
For an intro class, there was a LOT of very dense reading. Two papers, a midterm, and a take home final with mandatory sections. Don't go to class if you don't do the reading, but if you don't finish ALL the reading you won't pass the essay midterm.
The subjects taught in this class are mostly interesting but she makes it unnecessarily hard for an intro class. She also focuses a lot on her interests instead of providing more of an overview, basically she is south Asian and that seems to be the main focus of the class.
The readings for the class are somewhat dense if you don't have any prior experience reading about social and political theory. She goes through the readings in detail and recreates the arguments in clearer ways without simplifying or losing detail. She's brilliant, definitely take this class if you're willing to do the reading and go to lecture.
The readings are very dense for an intro level course, this is class that requires a lot of thinking. Anjali is very intimidating but hilarious.
Arondekar is clearly passionate about this subject and knows her stuff. She is interesting to listen to and is hilarious. However, this class is WAY TOO MUCH WORK for an intro class. Stay away unless you are ready to do ALOT of work. attending lecture is very helpful and sections are mandatory.
I took Anjali's Science and Sexuality Studies course, and recieved an A. It's not just enough to read the readings, but to engage with them carefully. I would like to give her a higher score for helpfulness, but the fact that shes only there during the week for 3 days, is too bad. All in all, she is a wonderful professor, even if shes a bit scary.
I had her for FMST studies intro and Feminisms and/of the global south. Even though they were large classes, she is a good lecturer and keeps things interesting. The readings were pretty important to do but overall the classes were pretty easy.
I actually had her for a graduate course. The major assignment in the class was a 25 page paper. She offered us the option of writing a longer paper and combining it with work for another class. I took this option and she failed me in the course. That was my first year of graduate school. Kind of ruined my career
Take this class only if you are REALLY into feminist studies. If you don't want to show up for lecture, keep up with the readings because she'll make you write essays and test you on midterms. It's not an easy class and she writes really messy on the small white board in the big hall so sit near the front. It's a love it or hate it kind of class.
The reading is incredibly dense for an intro class, don't take it if you're not used to spending at least 4 hours reading and the next 5 trying to understand what you just read.
excepts students do readings prior to class. lectures can be confusing at first but gets easier later on. explains in great detail the readings there are only 2 readings a week, some can be pretty long. shes funny and has a great sense of humor. exams are short responses. great class bring your books to class are she will put you under the spotlight
She's amazing, the class is difficult. Most challenging and rewarding class I've taken in college so far.
She's so great :') most brilliant lectures I've ever had - this class is intimidating because each reading is dense but Arondekar makes it easy to understand through lecture. Great range of content for an intro class, always interesting. Coursework and exams are manageable if you actually do the readings before class. I reccommend all majors
The readings are so dense and boring, I cant believe she would assign these for an intro class. Thanks to her I have absolutely 0 interest in furthering my knowledge of feminism while I'll be at UCSC. She is also very sassy and has her own political agenda that you'll learn about, and you either agree with her and get it or you're wrong.
TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO HAVE YOUR MIND BLOWN. Okay - its hard. But I got an A, because I did the reading (and I'm kinda smart) and I prepared for the tests. If you engage with the ideas you'll be okay. Its really worth it, trust me.
Arondekar was at first intimidating, but she is an absolutely amazing teacher. The class is so interesting, during my 1 45 min lecture I was completely engaged the whole time. she really makes you think about the world. the class is easy, nightly reading and 4 essay paper (2 are the midtermfinal). cant wait for another of her classes
Well, she's brilliant, engaging and entertaining. I don't always agree with her POV but I do always learn from it :) as far as grading and help, for intro classes that's all done by TA's, so this is just a lecture review. Upper divs would be diff I'm sure.
The best professor I have ever had hands down. Engaging, and extremely intelligent. Be prepared to do the readings and come to class hanging on every word she says. Left every class feeling like my brain was melting from new information. She changed my outlook on life.
Love her.
She's intimidating and takes class super serious, she'll pose open questions and expects people to answer otherwise she'll pick someone to chime in. Don't fall asleep in class because she will call you out and tell you to leave. She does not play!
Both classes I had w/ her were terrific. She will challenge you and make you a better scholar. I'm a PhD student now and her classes were the best preparation for grad school I had as an undergrad. If you're ready to work, this is the best training you could ask for. She doesn't dumb it down: we read the same stuff in grad school, just more of it.
She is intimidating AF on the first class. But stay the course! I've never had a professor who engaged my ideas with the equivalent seriousness they'd give to any published scholar in the field. She invested in me in ways that made me a far better clinician, researcher, and teacher. I wish I could take more of her classes.
When I saw all the reading that was assigned it seems overwhelming. But going to lecture and hearing her speak is amazing. She is brilliant and funny thought she seems intimidating. The papers sound scary at first but the TAs are very understanding.
Professor Anjali is the best professor I could have asked for. Honestly, hands down, the best person to talk about Feminist Studies as an analytical tool. Of course, if you're not down with the subject, you won't be down for her, but if you have any curiosity and open mindedness for the subject, she is THE ONE to learn from.
this was one of my first college classes and it was the most interesting one i've taken yet! prof was super sweet and talked to me because i sat up front, very educated and our ta's were great. haven't gotten my grade #COLA4ALL but i got As all quarter because i went to lectures, engaged with readings (so many), and went to office hours/section :-)
genuinely one of the best educators at UCSC. an amazing, engaging lecturer; there's a lot of reading expected, but it's worth it for the quality of prof arondekar's lectures and just to better understand the nuances of global issues. seriously such a transformative class; she expanded my MINDDD yet was so laid back and hilarious. highly recommend.
had fmst01 class as a freshman and felt like a 3rd year class doable but difficult. alot of the language is very very advanced
There were 3 papers for class that were based off of readings. At first some concepts would be confusing, but it gets easier! If you ask questions during office hours/class, youll be fine! Dont let the other reviews get to you, they never experienced an actual difficult upper div class yet, plus its one of the first classes in person again! :)
The readings are intense but she always goes over them (at least the ones we have to write about) in lecture. It felt like the TA wanted us to reiterate the readings/lecture material in the papers. Not a lot of room for personal interpretation. Lectures were amazing, I looked forward to them every week. Very insightful and thought provoking!
Professor Arondekar is super knowledgable in her field. Her lectures are interesting, but kind of intellectually dense. If you don't want to read and write don't take her classes. Essays are your main grades and they are all based on readings throughout the class. She clearly cares a lot about feminist studies, take this class if you do too.
the content and readings are not at all intro level in my opinion. they are hard to get through, however there are only three papers that determine your grade + attending every discussion section. if you miss over two sections you fail but lecture attendance is optional. professor is somewhat rude and has a superiority complex, but i respect her
Super easy class but she definitely doesn't care about the class and is racist
kind of a lot of reading (2-3 hours per week) but don't let that scare you because you don't need to do it all to get a good grade in the class. If you want to learn you should do the reading but if you are just there for the grade it's fine to skip some of it. Great class great lectures.
Feminist studies intro is an easy GE fulfillment class! Only 3 papers are due throughout the quarter, making it easy to stay on top of work. I found lectures to be very dense, so I only attended the first one. I still passed with an A.
You will have many readings to complete, but overall, you will have three paper responses, which are absolutely easy if you read the readings and pay attention during her lectures/videos she shows, which basically give you things to use in your paper.
