I took her for both bio 1 and 2 and I personally loved her! I think she's a great professor and she explains everything so clearly. She definitely cares about her students because I went to talk to her a lot during her office hours and she was able to help me out with any questions I had. Her tests are mainly off of her lectures.

Easy to follow lecture. Exams are worded stupidly but she does often curve. She's very enthusiastic and tries to keep class interesting and engaged. Clickers are extra credit! Attendance required. Decent professor but would take again. VERY minimal studying got be a B+

Book never used, just buy the access code that you need for homework and there is the etext already there. You can get an A in the class if you do the homework and study a bit for tests.

She is easily the greatest biology professor at the university. Her lectures are engaging and you can tell that she genuinely wants her students to do well. Granted, her tests aren't the easiest, but it's only because it's not pure memorization, but application. Do Mastering Bio, review power points, and pay attention. You'll be fine.

Her lectures are very interactive- she asks you to buy a clicker and makes sure that you use it! Attending class is mandatory. There was only one group project assignment but it was fairly easy. If you are majoring in Bio take her.

Lectures were boring, and she went through the material WAY too slowly. There was also a group project which was complete BS and made me hate the course. Overall a super easy course, put in minimal effort and get an A. Anyone who doesn't get an A is an idiot and should go back to high school, especially if you're thinking about grad school.

There were 3 midterms and one final. The 3rd midterm and the final were on the same day. There's daily clickers that count for attendance but also give you extra credit if you get them correct. I skipped too much and that brought my grade down 1 letter. You have to read the chapters to make an A though

Dr. Cheek is probably the best professor to take for introduction to biological sciences. Her lectures are mandatory, but they are designed to keep you engaged throughout the class. If you pay attention in class, take and study the notes, and attend recitation *especially* for test review week, you should be fine.

Cheek is AMAZING. Very stingy on people clicking for others though. I made a D on the first test, a B on the second test, and a C on the last test. BUT... she gave about 30 points total extra credit so I ended up with an A-!!! Her tests definitely are so hard and requires a lot of studying. But show up to class every day and you'll do fine.

Her tests were very difficult but the content came directly from the textbook. There are weekly recitations that are helpful if you go the week before the test. She gave out a lot of extra credit that added about 5 pts to my semester grade at the end. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

The only downside to her class is that her tests, no matter how much you know, will absolutely ruin your grade and ruin your hopes of getting into med. school and you'll have to be a trashman for rest of your life. The best biology teacher I have ever had. Her way of lecturing is unique. She shows us the pictures first, explains, and then the text. She draws pictures to help us understand processes. I had her for honors bio and her tests were not straight memorization. They are all work out but she gives partial credit.

I suggest just listening to her and make a few bullet points in your notes for the important things that she say in class because she post up the power point on BB after that particular chapter. Professor Cheek is very tough. Her lectures tend to be a drag and she is a great professor (teaching wise) but her tests are very difficult! She started doing group test where 80% of the midterm is your individual grade and 20% is your group (team) grade. It helps some people and hurts other. I felt as if her test were not very direct and tough.

Dr. Cheek surpasses the passionate threshold that so many bio/biochem teachers fail to do. She is a great teacher and explains very well. However, this in no way means that the student does no studying his or herself. You have to study, draw things out, make relationships and apply your knowledge. Her tests have a group portion and you just have to get lucky with a group that either knows their stuff or a group that didn't study at all. Dr. Cheek is a great professor but her tests are so difficult. Fortunately she curves and has several other things that are easy and can boost your grade. Almost all her question are analytical and require critical thinking. I failed her first test without a curve and got a 71 with it and I made Bs on the rest + the final & ended w/ an A.

I had Dr. Cheek for Honors Biology. I'll admit, I kind of procrastinated the whole semester and studied the days before each test, which made me end up with a B+. With extra credit, though, I ended up with an A. Her tests are completely free response. She will correct you on every little mistake you make and ink up your exam, which is a good thing.

Dr. Cheek presented the material in lectures very clearly. She has a PhD from Duke, so it's hard to say "she sometimes doesn't know what she's talking about." Some of her exam questions were tricky, especially when it came down to semantics and wording. No individual exam curves, but gives bonus questions on final to add points to previous exams

Lecture slides are posted on Blackboard in case you don't go to class, but in class attendance is taken. If you need help, go to office hours; she is not receptive to email.

Take Cheek if you want to learn and are willing to put in the time to study bio. If not take Knapp and learn nothing and get ready to study for MCAT or whatever by yourself. Cheek is always there to help you. Got a C on first test but made A's on next two and eventually made it out with a 99 in the class. Dont listen to people who dont study. EASY!

Take this teacher, she is worth your tuition money. Yes her tests can be very hard, but she will prepare you for upper level Biology courses. Prior to this class I never really had much of an interest in biology, but after sitting through a semester of Dr. Cheek's compelling lectures my curiosity was peaked. I was intimidated by what I've heard of the class, but found that she gives you the resources necessary to be prepared for tests. Great and understanding professor.

I took AP Bio in HS so I had some background beforehand. I would recommend to do 3 things, have a notebook for each of the following things: the HW, book notes, and lecture notes. I know its tedious, but I would say taking condensed book notes helps a lot. Always go to lecture, and watch out for the group assignments as they can sting your grade.

Cheek gives a review, all you have to do is read the book, fill them, and study. There's a decent amount of extra credit! People who say that this class is hard are those who don't bother to even try. Made Cs and Bs on my tests and ended with A+. Bio is not easy so you have to put in an effort but Cheek makes it understandable

Definitely was my hardest class this semester. Dr. Cheek is extremely smart and kind, and her lectures were helpful. I learned a lot from this class and it even made me consider changing my major to bio. The tests were very difficult, but the final includes "I Know it Now" questions which allow you to add up to 10 points to previous test grades.

I'm not even a STEM major and I was able to learn a lot and retain most of what I learned from her class. Very organized and great to take if you plan on taking the MCAT since she prepares students specifically for that medical exam.

Sitting through class, I could see that Dr. Cheek was very intelligent. I really struggled on her tests though. First things first, Cheeks class is not for people who need a science credit. She tells you the first day of class that this course is rigorous & for people who are required to take it for their major. You must read, & listen as much as you can in class. Dr. Cheek is very good at explaining the concepts and her powerpoint lectures are very easy to follow. Tests are not that hard once you get used to them, but they do make you think on a different level. Doing the review IN DEPTH, reading the textbook, and studying her powerpoints will get you an A.

Honestly one of the best science teachers I've ever taken, her explanations are very clear and easy to understand. If you read the textbook, do the homework, and do the review as a short answer template, you'll easily pass the class and won't regret it!

Dr. Cheek is one my favorite professors. Her class isnt an easy A, but it is absolutely achievable. Participate in class, stay on top of the homework, and go to office hours to ask for help when you need it. She really wants you to understand the material. Her tests require you to think, but she is preparing you for upper level classes!

Though she might seem intimidating at first, Dr. Cheek is one of the best professors I've ever had. She offers extra credit for participation and allows you to earn up to 10 extra points back on each exam. Though class isn't technically mandatory, it's highly recommended that you go as her exams come from her power points. Overall amazing

I took Dr. Cheek for my biology minor (1361+1362) and honestly she is a great professor. The absolute best thing about her is her energy she brings to every single class. Her tests are a bit difficult if you don't pay attention but overall not terrible if you study.

If you have the opportunity to take Dr. Cheek i would highly recommend it. Tests were not difficult if you studied the reviews and paid attention in class. One of the best professors at UH. She is very sweet and very passionate about Biology. You will have to show up to class to get points for clickers and there is homework every week. Her tests are straight forward and easy as long as you stay on top of things. Would recommend flashcards and drawing diagrams to study.

No tests/quizzes. All group experiments but individual assignments. One project that will take the entire semester that includes a research paper and 2 presentations. Overall, the assignments can be annoying due to unclear instructions but are doable and the class overall is enjoyable because of the field work you do.

BEST professor in the biology department/ honors college. 10/10 would recommend over Hanke or Sirrieh. TAKE HER. She gives test reviews and past exams. Study PPT slides and read the textbook as needed for clarification, as tests are review and lecture-based, but entirely free response. Reasonable number of assignments and homework, one project.

For me, I relied on the textbook more than her lectures because I tend to zone out. As a tip, I recommend reading the chapters before class so you can understand her lectures. For her tests, the questions were matching, multiple choice, and a drawing. The tests was doable, multiple choice makes you think, and second guess yourself a lot.

She's def the best honors bio professor! Her lectures are really organized and you can tell she knows the material well. The tests are all free response which is challenging but you get used to it and her reviews align pretty well with the tests. She has clear grading criteria for her assignments and will give you the benefit of the doubt.

Probably the nicest professor Ive ever had. Took honors bio 1 and 2 with her my freshman year. Never really had to read the textbook, but definitely paid attention in class and studied a good amount. Shes very generous with extra credit (at the end of the year) but she graded free responses somewhat strictly on tests.

Cheek honestly is an amazing professor and is very clear during lectures. The people who complain are those that skip class or don't pay attention. Her reviews are exactly what's on the test and they're pretty easy tests if you took lecture notes, read the book, and did exactly what's on the review. Probably my favorite professor at the University. She tries her very hardest to make sure that you understand the material from any background. Very caring and funny. The tests are exactly what's in the lecture. The homework is a little challenging, but it's not too hard. I would say easy A if you come to class. Prepares you for later NSM classes.

Fantastic professor! Test consist of vocab, multiple choice, and a drawing which is given in the test review. She offers extra credit throughout the semester and bonus points at the end of the year.

Dr. Cheek's classes are fully lecture-based with around 3 group ("teamwork") activities (that aren't projects - just regular assignments to boost your grade). You're given online homework once a week that's pretty easy and participation/attendance is extra credit. Be prepared to study outside of class A LOT if you wanna do well on tests.

Having professor Cheek for biology was a pretty good experience. You can tell she is passionate about biology and really knows what she is talking about. I was able to get by without reading too much, if you understand the concepts/lectures and the homework then you are in good shape. She gives reviews for every test, and extra credit on the final.

Dr. Cheek is a super intelligent professor, and her lectures are amazing. But holy crap, they are long. Although she does give study guides, they are also long and I did not find them too, too helpful when it came to the test for honors. Her tests killed me. They're the only reason I won't take her again. They were so, so difficult.

I LOVED going to lecture. Not an easy A, but she is one of the best professors I have ever had. You can tell she's passionate about her job by how she teaches lectures. However, you still have to put in work. The test is set to make sure you understand the concept and able to APPLY what you learned to get your A. Pre-Med take her! She is amazing!!

1361&1362 Cheek really knows how to teach a college course, even if it's more tough it'll definitely benefit you in the long run so consider it if you're planning to do pre-health profession. Her exams are tough but study reviews and go to recitations. There's a good amount of extra credit from clickers and the final adds up to 10pts on each exam!

Dr. Cheek does a great job of making the course organized and straightforward. Her group projects were very interesting and the feedback she gave on presentations was very useful for building up my public speaking skills. Her feedback on literary review assignments was foundational to my ability to write scientifically today.

I've seen so many people compare Cheek to Farmer. BOTH professors are great and the test averages in both classes are similar. However, I can only speak on behalf of Cheek! She offers bonus points on previous tests. I took her for 1431 and 1432 and loved her for both. People say "take her if you plan to go to med school", and I 100% agree.

Dr. Cheek is a superb professor as I had her both for 1361/1362, She gives commentary on the slides, encourages questions, she likes students to draw diagrams to help learn concepts. Participation is critical for success in this class for your clicker EC pts and the group case study assignments. Her tests are EZ if you think critically/do HW/Read

She is so sweet and she really cares about the students! Her test are hard but if you study you will get through them. I love her lectures, the only issue is that I wish she didn't force you to turn on your camera! You can tell she really loves biology though, I'm hoping to take her for intro to bio 2 as well

Great professor. Go to lectures, take great notes, and read and you should be fine in the class. Her test are more concept based than straight questions so you have to study a bit for a good grade. If you want an easy to pass class, dont take if you dont like biology. Overall great lectures and easy to follow her style of teaching.

I took her in-person class and she is really nice and you gives you everything you need to do well in the class but you still have to put in a lot of work, her tests are hard because you do need to know everything but she does give out a study guide for every test.

I highly recommend you take her. Her class is well organized and she does her best to make you understand. She has study guides for each exam. She also gives the exam from the previous year so you can see what kind of questions she will ask. There is weekly homework and there are also group quizzes for each class. You have to read the book!

Dr. Cheek was a great professor for intro to Bio. She covers everything needed for the exams in her lectures, but make sure to read the textbook as well or the tests will be difficult. She is rally passionate about biology, and don't be afraid to ask her questions

If you want to get a B or better in this class you have to at least watch the lectures she puts everything on the tests there. Do your homework and do the lecture quizzes. She gives old tests, study them theyre similar to her real ones. She gave lots of extra credit because of Covid, that helped too. Watch the lectures, take notes, youll do fine.

LOVE Dr. Cheek! She's my favorite UH prof thus far. She's so caring and takes the time to help you understand concepts. She's the toughest honors bio prof but I've heard premed upperclassmen say her teaching is the most helpful for the mcat. It's a hard class that requires work but she's so supportive! Know that her exams are all free response.

I felt like I actually understood the concepts and reasoning behind biology rather than just memorizing vocabulary for hours. Tons of extra credit on the final. Super open to questions. Accessible outside class. USE THE STUDY GUIDE AND PRACTICE TEST.

Cheek is the best intro to BIO professor to take. She teaches the information well enough that you can get away with not reading the textbook if you attend ALL lectures, but I wouldn't recommend doing that. Offers extra credit and points back from your exams at the end of the semester.

The extra credit at the end of the year helps a lot, a lot of my friends were bumped up like a letter grade. The tests are very application-based so I recommend reading the textbook and really thoroughly understanding the material.

I love Dr. Cheek and was sad when I couldn't enroll spring semester with her. She is an amazing professor, but can go very fast through lectures. She does record them. The test are fair, IF you take the time OUT of lecture to understand each unit. I haven't t read most of the chapters assigned, however, from the few I have read, it can help.

She made lectures easy to understand and she even drew diagrams throughout her lectures to make topics easier to understand. She isn't the best at responding to emails, but she is very approachable for questions during class.

Personally, I could not follow her lectures. If you miss out on one you get kind of lost and I taught myself most of the content at home using online resources. She responds to email pretty fast and is super nice. However, her tests aren't the hardest thing in the world but the answer choices can confuse you so be confident in what you know.

Delivers pretty difficult concepts in an easy-to-understand way, although can zone out on lectures sometimes. I recommend reading (or at least skimming) the textbook. Long hw assignments, but somewhat helpful. Be prepared to have a deep understanding in order to do well on exams.

Love Profeesor Cheek, she's always willing to answer questions in class and explain concepts and is always excited to teach. But she sucks at responding to emails and is hard to contact outisde of class. She was more disorganized this semester compared to last. Tests are application and concept based, so don't take if its not your strong suit.

A wonderful professor who is clearly passionate about her work. Her class was well organized and provided many opportunities to "catch-up". Grading was very fair and assignments/exams were reasonably spread. Her lectures were generally engaging and well-paced with clear indications of what vocabulary/diagrams/concepts were particularly important.

Best Professor ever. I took her for 1306. Her style of teaching forces you to truly understand the content. I got a C in 1306 but put in my effort in 1307 and got an A. Lots of EC at the end of the semester. She is very understanding and it is obvious she loves her job. I love her. Read the textbook before lecture and youll ace the exams.

Dr. Cheek is wonderful. Powerpoints are not too text-heavy, and she gives you time to take notes before moving on. Uses visuals and videos. Posts powerpoints online. She stops to make sure the class understands important topics, and we do practice questions in class. Definitely would take her again

Excellent professor. People are saying that her exams are difficult, but this is so your understanding, rather than memorization, can be tested. If you want to go further in life, you can't just use your memorization of facts to get by. Unfortunately, most of my generation just wants to pass, not learn. At CMU, UPenn, MIT,etc exams are harder.

Dr. Cheek is amazing. People say that her exams are complicated compared to lectures. That is not true. She gives participation questions during lectures for practice that reflect her exams. If you want to get an A in this class, FOLLOW THE STUDY GUIDE. Make sure to go to her office hours as she is willing to help and get to know you :-)

I'd say that Dr. Cheek gives a student massive opportunities to succeed in this course. Before exams, we were given a study guide, an old test, and extra credit. Dr. Cheek is generally very nice, and the lectures help somewhat with understanding the material. There are also a lot of cushion grades, so if you fail a test, your grade won't tank.

I had Dr. Cheek for both Bio 1306 and 1307. She's a great professor and a sweet person. HW assignment online on Mastering Biology due every Sunday. Exams are in person, during the scheduled class period, on paper w/ scantrons. Graphing assignments and teamwork assignments in person. Point solutions attendance points. Lots of extra credit & curving

The lecture format isn't my favorite but she does very well and most importantly always allows enough time to copy down notes before moving on. The exams are tough but not impossible if you study the reviews provided. She allows you to improve your test scores with a short, post-exam quiz for each unit. She's very nice too!

Dr. Cheek is a great professor. Her tests are difficult but they're doable with her reviews. She focuses a lot on vocab and is even worth 40 points on the test. She's a really sweet person. I would take her over any of the other honors bio professors if I ever had to.

For Bio1 honors section she does make you help with research so you have to do fieldwork but its not too bad and only twice. She has lots of opportunities for extra credit which you might need because her tests aren't easy.

She gives points at the end of the semester as a redemption for your past exams which honestly came in clutch. If you study you will be fine. She likes her students and wants them to do well!

Shes better than the other bio profs. Tests are based off lecture slides, which are posted on canvas for you to review whenever. Theres a few clicker questions youll need to do in class for credit. Unless youre lazy and cant be bothered to study at all, you should be fine. Her exams arent harder than any other bio profesors. Shes better than farmer

Dr. Cheek is an outstanding professor. She is one that not only understands the material at a very high level, but is able to simplify heavy concepts so that they are easily digestible. Her passion for biology can be felt from the beginning all the way to the end of the semester. Her class can be difficult for novice learners but is fair.

Exams are tough, but the study guides she provides reflect most of the exam's content; there's three exams and a final. The extra credit she provides after every test helped me secure an A- for the semester. Also make sure to complete the MasteringBiology homework assignments every week.

She's a good professor, she is wayyyyyyyy better medrano. If you study, show up to class, and genuinely care about biology you'll do fine. But you have to show up to get the slides, ask questions, and do the many point solutions in class. Do not stress over if you get a low exam grade just focus on the next exam and learn from your mistakes.

Dr. Cheek is a great professor. She has very engaging lectures, posts notes online, and is willing to answer any questions both during and after her lectures. The con would be the difficult exams, but if you take good notes and study them (not the day before an exam) you should be good.

Trust me as someone who had to drop this class my sophomore year and retake it, Professor Cheek is really good. Her extra credit helped my grade and she offers a lot of it. Show up to class at least for the participation points. Not a class you can blow off, read more of the textbook instead of slides. Her tests are always vocab and conceptual.

Really nice prof. Asks many questions in class & attendance is mandatory, but has little effect on your grade if you miss. Test reviews are very close to the final exam--study them well!! Exams are 1/2 vocab and 1/2 MCQ. Homework is sooo long so don't procrastinate.

She was very kind and engaging, although some of her lectures were boring or irrelevant. Professor Cheek is one of the best teachers I've ever had, and I genuinely learned so much from her. While the material and tests are difficult, she teaches the material well and sets you on the right path for higher level biology courses.

Her lectures were very interactive which I loved because it helped me learn better. She does NOT respond to emails which is actually sad, but you live with it. Her exams are over her lectures and power points slide but she doesn't release the slides until she's done with them and sometimes even forgets to post them.

She was an amazing professor, I think that her exams were the easiest of all Biol 1307 sections. Exams were 50% vocabulary and I think the multiple choice was not too bad, especially if you took AP Biology in high school. Overall I liked her class, and she gave extra credit as well.

took bio 1 with farmer and got a D, retook it with cheek and got an A and she was so much easier and much better, her tests are short and half of them are just vocab which other professors dont do at all so still make sure you take her class seriously and study, she gives a lot of extra credit and her lectures and resources are very helpful

There's a lot of material for you to read to understand what's on exams, and she is very meticulous about her grading so there are slight things you could get marked for. She has in class clicker questions that are extra credit whether you get it right or wrong, study guides and practice exams for each unit. Really helpful, take her if you can.

Shes great at lecturing and gives good info and drawings but attendance is very important as she does clicker questions during lectures. Gives a lot of extra credit after exams with extra questions and attendance extra credit. Tests are like 50 percent vocab but the non vocab questions can be very very specific so its very important to study

Dr. Cheek is an incredibly engaging professor who clearly loves what she teaches and cares for her students, offering up to 7.5% extra credit back. While her lectures were not useless, I don't recommend using them to study for the test but rather her study guide, which is an exact replica, and go to her office hours.
