always says "sorry i misspoke" and "kay?" - gets a little frustrating because you feel like she doesn't know what she is talking about.
She reads off slides and you can get all the information out of the book. It took me a while to even warm up to this professor, because she moves really fast through her slides and does indeed say "okay" at least once per sentence. However, after the "Reproduction" unit, when she actually started involving the class a bit more, it got better.
She tends to talk kind of fast and sometimes sounds like she doesn't know what she is talking about, however, she sounds like she genuinely wants you to learn and she goes out of her way to make sure you learn the material.
AWESOME TEACHER! SOOO GLAD SHE'S TEACHING. I HIGHLY RECCOMEND HER! AND, SHE'S PRETTY HOT AND YOUNG!
Ann is very nice. However, she moves so fast through the material. Winter 07 was the first time teaching 202. She seemed to want to teach the class EVERYTHING she learned, when getting her PHD, in one introduction class. Too much material, in a small amount of time. Also, not enough ways to recieve material, it was all presented the same.
She talks quickly and goes through the slides fast. She's helpful if you go to her personally.
Are you kidding? She does not talk too fast, the course is just tough. Listen to the podcasts and if you can't understand, pause or rewind. I never went to class and got an A. And fyi she IS hot. And she is super nice, she never even got annoyed when the same kids kept asking really stupid questions during lecture! I'd totally take her again!
Very helpful, nice, and fair. Will always reply to emails and is very laid back in class structure. I would take her again!
Very good teacher and very helpful. the only reason i sat in the front row was to take notes for a handicapped dude. Didnt need to go to lecture, cuz the book had all the info. i got a 4.0 just by reading the book. She is a good lecturer tho and she kept me awake in class. Take her classes!
Completely incompetent. I have never had a worse teacher and I cannot understand how she is even teaching classes at a good university like UW. If you want an easy grade, then sign up for any of her classes. But if you actually want to learn anything, then by all means, aviod her! She had no idea how to grade a paper or conduct a class.
Prof. Voorhies ROCKS. She teaches a really dry, difficult subject with an amazing amount of energy and enthusiasm- her lecture style could give Feynman a run for his money. Her engagement with the material is contagious; she makes Biopsychology fascinating and accessible.
Psychobiology of Women is an incredible class and Dr. Voorhies cares about her students and wants them to do well. The first test is a killer so leave no detail unstudied! The other exams are more reasonable and she is fair in her grading overall. This class is mostly anatomy, physiology, and endocrinology. This class is detailed, but worth it!
Basically a more attractive textbook. Her mouth says "I have a Ph.D, omg look at it it's so pretty", but her actual knowledge doesn't seem to sretch beyond her powerpoint notes. Don't expect any technical explainations, and don't bring up any other research - she hasn't read it. Either take her class or buy her course book - they're the same thing.
Let's see here... kay? Really knowledgeable, goes into detail about subject matter enough for students to really understand it. Oh, sorry, I misspoke. She's actually none of that. She's nice and peppy, but in that cheerleader sort of way. Give me an A! That's about how easy her class is. You won't learn much, very limited spectrum of knowledge.
I know it's nice to get A's, especially when you don't have to spend >15 min for each joke of an assignment and 15 mins in class most days, but that DOES NOT mean the teacher is even remotely competent. I can't believe that someone so clueless has a PhD. I learned absolutely NOTHING useful and this was by far the worst class that I have ever taken.
I enjoyed her class so much. She was so helpful and she wanted to make sure that every students in her class understand the materials. She is so nice!
Ann Voorhies totally sucks!! DONT TAKE PSY 202 with her, she is so0oo0o0 crazy!! Her slides are so incomplete and she move soo0o0o fast and her test are so hard. Her grading systems sucks as well. She is rude too!!
Not horrible, but not great. A whole quarter of slides, slides, slides and long textbook and other readings is not my cup of tea. I dread going to class because she goes through slides so quickly and lets people ask irrelevant questions to which she normally answers "I don't know" in a peppy tone. She is repetitive and makes tests difficult.
Prof. Voorhies seems like an incredibly nice person, but she needs to learn how to manage her class time better. She rarely gets through her slides and leaves it up to students to finish them on their own time. Also, there's a comprehensive final, but at least you get to drop a midterm.
Went to class everyday, printed off the slides from online to take notes, and the information was still a mystery to me. She talks really quickly and basiclly regurgitates what is on the slides with some extra information (some helpful, but for the majority not). And her TA didn't help the pain either.
I thought she was very nice. Class was incredibly laid back and pretty fun. The paper we had to write was hard, and she sent them to a reader to grade, which sucked because I know she would have graded them much easier. Overall, she's cool!
This class totally shot me down. She gives you so much information so quickly. When it comes down to studying for exams, you can't really sort through it all. The tests are worded so differently than the material she gives. It's unbelievable. Bottom line- Intensely hard class. Don't take it.
worst professor ever! do not take this class from her. she moves way too fast through her notes..yea she posts them online, but theyre incomplete from the ones during lecture. i took her and got a 1.8. i retook it with olavarria and got a 3.7. avoid her at all costs
Very nice and lectures well. She makes going to class worth it, though podcasts are very handy to have. The exams are intensive but not impossible, definitely not as hard as people have been making them out to be here.
I have just finished taking her PSYCH202 class for Winter08 at UW. She is an animated/energetic lecturer, puts complex topics into easy analogies. Excellent clarity, office hrs extended to accommodate me. Tests = Easy, moderate, hard, easy, easy (drop 1). Stopped taking notes in class due to pace, but listen to podcast/take notes = getting a 4.0
Reads straight off a powerpoint everyday. Her lectures might be useful if she talked slower but you end up spending most of your class time trying to get all of the info from her slides, rather than listening to her. Her tests are straight from the slides but unfortunately if you miss some of the info on the slides your screwed. She did seem nice.
Must attend ever lecture and do ALL of the readings or you are screwed on the tests.
If you are not one to pay attention to TINY detail do not take this class. Her tests are so detailed it's impossible to get an A- instead of asking the main points shes VERY focused on what neuron goes where- not what it does. Did not learn anything- just tried very hard to memorize TINY details. Book is only used about 10%. follow the study guide
As someone that is taking biopsych for the second time with a different professor, I really miss Professor Voohries. She's very knowledgeable, but her pace is really fast and her lectures are packed with a lot of details and information. Her class is hard because there's so many details, so concentrate on memorization and you should be fine.
The material was basically what you might expect from such an intensive class. Little things about her and her way of teaching irritated me. Her random grading scale is completely ridiculous and I also found her very rude to students, even in front of class. She moves too quickly, and doesn't emphasize what's actually on the tests.
For psych 101, she's not the easiest teacher. Some of her test questions are tricky. I can't say she is the greatest speaker either. She did enough to just keep me awake. However, she is extremely helpful through email and office hours.
Awesome prof, notes and podcasts were promptly available online for the days you missed class. Sometimes spent too much time on questions, but very helpful.
Awesome teacher. Likable and easy to understand.
Easy to 4.0 if you go to class everyday/listen to the podcast everyday. Review sheets tell you everything that will be on a test. Sometimes she goes on tangents and answers questions that don't really matter, but overall, a great professor!
Great professor, very clear on what you need to do to get a 4.0. Go to class, study your notes (ALL test questions appeared in the notes!) and get an A!
She appears to be warm & nice when you first meet her. However, I found her rude & public about grades. She embarrassed her students by correcting them in front of the entire class. She would roll her eyes obnoxiously! She needs to be professional & confidential. The class was only fun b/c everyone fell in love w/ their rats. NO HELP & sarcastic!
This is an extremely intense class. We got so much information, and the exams are multiple choice, but are mean't to trick and confuse you. I listened to podcasts, took notes, studied intensely and still only got a 76! You must get an 85 to get a 3.0! Great teacher, fun class but intensely difficult
This professor is really enthusiastic about biopsych
ann voorhies is absolutely adorable! and shes always so chipper
Reads straight off the slides so kind of hard to stay engaged in the lecture. I also didn't like the way she talked it was really repetitive and her tone gets super annoying after the first 3 minutes of class. Grading wise its pretty straight forward. Test material is straight forward too.
Really good with the material, for how much, and how hard it is. Her voice is always so engaging, and she is helpful with studying material. Good teacher for how hard the class is.
Very interesting class. The tests are very straight forward. As long as you go to lecture, study, and understand the material, a 4.0 is do-able.
Dr. Voorhies is by far the best professor I have had. The course covers a TON of a material, but she presents it in an effective way and provides many avenues for getting help (email, office hours, online discussion). Anyone complaining is just bitter because the class actually required studying. It's college, duh.
She is very involving in lectures and brings up very interesting examples and is also often quite funny. She also gives you plenty of opportunity to get extra help. While the class is quite difficult, I had a very good experience taking the class from her. Recommended!
I really enjoyed this class, and felt like I actually gained real knowledge. Podcasts are a convenient alternative to going to class, and I felt it worked best for me in terms of this class. I got a 3.7 without buying the book. Probably could've gotten a 4.0 if I didn't get sick and bomb the fourth exam. Excellent teacher, vibrant personality!
Great teacher. I loved her class, her lectures were interesting, engaging and fun. I liked the structure of the class and as long as you attend lectures, read assigned readings and do the work you should do fine. Not that hard of a class I liked it!
Most other comments here have explained how she is a phenomenal teacher. However many fail to mention that Voohries is HOT. Somehow her intellect combines with her physicality to make her just insanely attractive. Look at it this way, she has the same haircut I had when I was 10 (im male fyi) and yet she is still smokin.
She tends to regard her class as 4-years, but the material is well-covered.
motivated students a lot, very intelligent and charismatic. Liked coming to class. Is very helpful and clear. Class is fairly hard and covers a lot of information but if you study a lot and know your material well then you'd do fine. Just remembering the information will not help.
Dr. Voorhies is about the best professor you could hope for with this frustratingly difficult material. She is very clear and organized, friendly and approachable, always willing to help. This class requires constant attention and studying. She certainly doesn't keep track of attendance, but DEFINITELY watch the screencast if you miss lecture.
She is an amazing teacher, knows how to explain, very enthusiastic about what she's teaching her students, and although i have never talk to her, she seems like she's extremely approachable and willing to help! The content of the class is very interesting too!
Professor Voorhies was extremely enthusiastic and passionate about the topics also very nice and approachable! This class takes a lot of studying but all from the lectures I didn't use the book at all! Definitely recommend this class especially with Professor Voorhies!
Best professor I've had thus far! (and Im @ the end of my jr yr)
She was OKAY.... The first 3 tests were the most hard. There is a lot of terminology (annoying) and her tests questions are multilayered- so when studying you have to know everything for each concept. Study where NT's are projected- those were the hardest for me! Her test outlines were unhelpful bc they literally cover everything. Get a good TA!!!!
Funny, engaging, very interactive for a lecture class. She is extremely competent and willing to help, and always has time for questions. She makes a potentially very dry and boring class interesting.
really funny professor!
The course itself is all memorization with loads of terminology but Voorhies does a good job covering everything on the test during lecture. Quiz sections are helpful to understand the bigger picture.
One of the more difficult classes I've taken at the UW. She talks really fast during lecture. However she is very enthusiastic and passionate about what she teaches. Get a good TA if you can -- helps a lot to understand the material!
She's incredible; enthusiastic, extremely knolwedgable, and she's ready and willing to help you with anything. However, she's tough.
Great, super confident, loved the class. Do go to section - very helpful.
Wonderful teacher. Great class. She is always available for extra help and id very knowledgeable and understanding. Knows the subject like the back of her hand. Also, very hot.
One of my favorite profs! She is energetic, sweet, and enthusiastic. Her lectures are interesting and clear. The class isn't easy, but she is very helpful to students who work hard. I asked her a psych question unrelated to the class, and she sent me articles even in the midst of grading finals. A very sweet lady.
best prof I ever had...don't really need the book a ton...just study and know the words on the review sheet...she's really into teacher and makes it fun...work on the written early on...studied hard and got a 4.0
she's sweet and helpful.
Absolutely one of my favorite professors. She is always well prepared for her. She doesn't merely lecture in the class; it's open for everyone to discuss the content, and it gets very personal. It was an early class, but she always kept it interesting. Work was fair and you could always get help. Would definitely recommend this class with her!
AMAZING. She is hands down the best professor I've had at UW thus far. She has a great way of explaining complicated subjects and knows what she's talking about. Her screencasts are extremely helpful, as well. Let's just say I used to hate biology, but now I've found a great interest in it. Take her class if you can!
Great professor. She enjoys teaching and explained things in a way that makes them interesting and easy to understand. However, her class is definitely a lot of work. But if you do the reading and study early then getting a good grade is definitely doable. Overall a great professor and kept me coming to class at 830.
Voorhies is simply amazing. She is the only prof who can keep me awake at 8.30am.She has this really expressive and musical tone of voice, and casual humor that transforms the goriest of biopsych into fun. She's also super friendly & helpful, encourages us to think critically and takes questions very seriously. Her TAs this quarter have been great too.
Professor Voorhies is engaging and cares that her students learn the material. I appreciated her enthusiasm for the subject and sincerely enjoyed the class as a whole. The class covered a lot of material, but overall I felt that the tests were fair.
Prof. Voorhies was a great professor. She really knows her stuff and you can tell she is really passionate about it as well. Her lectures are clear and informative but reading the textbook is necessary. Overall I would say her tests are hard but fair and there is NO busy work required for the class (just one writing assignment).
She presents info clearly and logically, but still with enthusiasm. Great class!
Tests were multiple choice and straightforward if you studied. It was very clear what students were expected to know. Dr. Voohries is passionate about the subject and my TA (Yong Sang Jo) gave us great resources to use for studying. I loved the class!
Fantastic teacher who is very clear, and does an extraordinary job of teaching Psych 202. This class is a lot or work but worth it if you willing to put in the effort. Study Early!
She's very clear in her lectures of what she expects of you... but her material is HARD. If you want to get a below average score, overall, go ahead and take her class. You literally would have to study hours every single day to even get close to a 4.0. No one has time to devote this much time to a class. The online course is EASY.
This was definitely one of my more enjoyable classes this quarter. Dr. Voorhies DOES talk pretty fast (like a lot of people are saying) but she has screencasts and the discussion board online is very helpful. You have to study to get a good grade, don't expect an easy 4.0. The material is difficult but interesting (esp. if you're a psych major!)
The class is really interesting, and listen to her lecture will make you want to study! Lecture is really energetic and fun. Recommended!!!Love this class
Love her class, I always return online to recapture what she'd said in the lecture, and it is really helpful, also if TA have review session you could go, it is helpful too.
If you study everything from lecture, you should be fine. This class is basically pure memorization but the material is interesting! Voorhies is an excellent lecture and she makes going to class worthwhile.
I had Ann for biopsych (PSYCH 202) before this and in both classes she has been by far the best teacher I have ever had at UW. Going to class is necessary, as is asking questions when confused. She is always willing to help and provides plenty of opportunities to help you out.
I had her for biopsych and i loved her lectures. she's so enthusiastic, she makes it fun. the course content itself is very interesting and very useful to not only psychology but life! she is definitely one of my favorite professors at the uw.
Loved the class and Ann! Would highly recommend taking one of her classes.
She is without a doubt one of the most incredible professors I've had. She is spunky, energetic and is passionate about psychology. If you can take a class from her, do it!!!! You will NOT regret it. Just don't be lazy and you'll learn more than ever before and will enjoy it all.
I love Voorhies. I have taken a number of classes with her. Biopsych of Women (357) is one of the BEST classes that I have taken at UW.
This was the first time Psych of Gender was taught, and she did an amazing job. Tests were easy. The textbook I kind of skimmed, it's the articles you want to read well. Class average was high for tests. 2 MC and Cum. final (mostly focus on later material) she tends to get behind though, students ask questions and takes up too much of class time.
Ann is the best teacher I've ever had!! She's so enthusiastic in class and in office hour. Always happy to answer student's questions. But don't waste too much time in reading the book. The lecture is super super important.
There is a lot of memorization required for this class, so I would say the difficulty lies in the amount of material you need to know. That said, Dr. Voorhies is fabulous - she is enthusiastic, a great help during office hours, and a professor you would rather have for an 8:30 class.
hands down my favorite class and my favorite professor! there is a lot of memorization in the class but if you take the time to memorize everything and actually understand the material then you will for sure get an A in this class. Professor Voorhies is really awesome and entertaining.
Voorhies is an awesome teacher! She really cares about her students and her lectures are interesting. She provides lots of ways for you to get extra help outside of class, (which I would highly recommend because it is a hard class). Stay on top of what's happening by reviewing the lectures and reading the book.
I honestly thought Biopsych was a very easy class. Just hunker down, do the readings, pay attention. Learn the material. Just do it. Don't get overwhelmed. Just learn n you'll be fine. Dr. Voorhies is a great teacher. I don't think I've ever given a hot rating before since it is irrelevant but you kinda have to. The bonus questions on exams r gr8
Excellent professor! She is by far the best prof i've ever taken a class from at the UW. She makes the class very interesting and fun at the same time. She's clear, patient and is always open to questions and comments. She's simply a brilliant professor!!
Beautifully precise and concise, awesome workload and clear expectations. you'll really learn a lot.
Best professor I've ever had at the University of Washington, by far. Even if you can't make it to her lectures, she posts her lecture slides before and screencasts immediately after class. Her lectures are super clear and easy to understand. I wouldn't just study the lectures slides though. The things she says are really supplemental to the exams.
I loved this class & you don't have to attend lectures (all online) which was helpful because it could get confusing. MEMORIZE her lecture notes for the exams and you'll be okay. I only went to class to take the exams and got a 3.6 - super easy if you are truly interested in the material, you will do fine!
I had Biopsych with Voorhies, and she is wonderful! She's full of energy, engaging, and funny. She talks extremely quickly, so if you attend class be prepared to take fast notes! However, you don't actually have to be there - everything is screencasted online later. Point of interest: my male friends thought she was hot.
One of my absolute favorite classes taken at UW! Biopsych is so interesting and you will learn a ton! Voorhies is such an enthusiastic professor she makes the lectures really interesting, plus everything is screencasted so you don't actually need to go to class. Highly recommend!
I love her! Interesting class! there are 4 mid, 2 writings. 1 final. the lowest midterm score is dropped. no clicker. no quiz. you dont need textbook to get 100% on exams. Lecture slides are enough to study. but if you want to know about the topic more, or want to score on extra credit problems, get it.
Great professor. Clear lectures that were posted online. Lowest midterm dropped, final ~33% cumulative only. She really cares about students' success and her lectures are really worth waking up early for! Fair grading, just read the book, do the homework, and study a bit every week.
Very enthusiastic and committed to teaching her students
Not only is Ann a brilliant teacher she is also funny, easy going, and relatable. Even though the class was large she encouraged participation and was available for one on one help as well. I went to every class even though she puts slides up simply because it was enjoyable. Highly recommend anything she teaches.
Great class, great teacher. She is very helpful and obviously passionate about the subject. However, this class was difficult and by no means an easy A. Lots of work required for an A, but it's pretty easy to get a B.
Definitely the best Professor ever!!!!She is easygoing and funny. I really wish I could take more classes with her, but since I am graduating, no more chance to do so. The class materials are very useful.
Great professor! She really cares about her students and is passionate about biopsych (oddly lol). She's really helpful and WANTS you to understand. The class is very tough, and you have to put in a lot of effort. But there's many tools to help you through the class. Don't really need the book! Mainly goes off of lectures. Highly recommend!!!!
She is the most straightforward teacher I've ever had. Her tone of voice is extremely motivating, no monotone, but not too annoying either. Very down to earth and approachable. Course difficult but she makes it doable
Great Professor, She cared about helping students and realized that the course load was rather difficult. I also found the course content very interesting. Most of the questions on the exams came from lecture, but a few were from the book. 4 exams (lowest exam score is dropped) and a final that is 1/3 cumulative. Not an easy A, but its doable.
My favorite professor thus far in UW! I've taken 2 (currently doing psych of gender) classes from her and I love it. I hated bio related stuff before biopsych, but now it's my fav, I wish we covered more in that class. I'm definitely taking more psych classes with her.
Professor Voorhies is the BEST! She presents the material in a well organized manner and she's very clear on all the concepts. Her exams are tough but there are bonus questions. I learned a lot from this course and I definitely recommend her!
Loved her. She was always engaging at 8:30 and showed how much she cared about her class and if we were learning. Keep up with the reading and GO TO CLASS and you should be fine!
Great professor. Engaging lectures and you can tell she loves the material. Despite morning class, she was able to keep me awake and interested. I learned a lot in her class and she explained things very well. Very friendly and happy to speak with students after class or during her office hours, even if it isn't class related. Highly recommended.
Great professor. She is very enthusiastic in the subject and one of the best professor I have had so far on UW Seattle campus.
Dr Voorhies is an excellent professor. she made the class so fun. she talks with such clarity. i never needed to open the textbook. there are 3 exams but if you pay attention in class or watch the lectures on screencast you'll do fine. great fun class!
A difficult class for sure, but she is an amazing teacher! Extremely approachable, enthusiastic, easy to understand... she is the best professor I have had to this day. I wish she could teach all of my psych classes. They'd kick my butt but it would be worth it! I learned so much.
She is the best professor I know so far. She is so enthusiastic and helpful. For psych101, it is not that difficult. I decided to take psych202 with her, but only with her!
She's really nice and pretty straight foreword about her expectations. No quiz section so a decent amount of outside work in necessary to do well on the tests. Doesn't speak very efficiently in class and often runs out of time on power points.
She is the teacher i have met so far in my life who LOVES teaching that much!!! She enjoys her lecture time and you can tell because she always almost dances in the lecture. The punchline of this lecture, according to her, is "no panic!". She is utterly loving and the exam is extremely easy if you know how to memorize! HIGHLY recommend her!
Straight forward, clear, very reasonable exam guidelines. A fairly easy class, but a good introduction to college and it will help those trying to get used to studying. She is also very committed to her students and she is entertaining in lecture. Information is interesting, especially since she is so dedicated to it!
Overall this class can be summed up into two words: interesting and easy. Voorhies teaches you about psychology, but you learn a LOT about yourself along the way. Lots of memorization from the book, but there's extra credit and she drops the lowest exam, so it's pretty easy to get a high grade. Bonus, she gives really good college study habits!
This class was so fun and interesting! Awesome professor, I definitely recommend her and am going to take another class with her in the future! She made Psychology so fun and easy to learn! Definitely take this class with her.
Ann is amazing. She can teach the most dull information and still keep you engaged. She's very willing to help and is quite intelligent. I highly recommend her. However, the subject is extremely difficult, so you really have to study. But she is an easy grader for assignments. I got full credit on all of them.
I adored Prof Voorhies. You could tell she loves teaching psychology. She was very interesting, her lectures were very insightful. There is a lot of reading and her lectures have clicker questions which is counted for participation. I highly recommend her for any student taking psych 101.
You can tell Dr. Voorhies knows what she is talking about. However she uses unnecessary big words and is also very repetitive-not about the important things though. She is too wordy and I think she tries to make you connect with the material by making it funny, but it didn't really work for me, I mostly found it annoying.
Dr. Voorhies tends to go on in her lecture. She doesn't move from topic to topic quickly and reiterates her points. In a two hour class don't expect to go more than 4 slides. She is very knowledgable, but I found her pace too slow and frustrating. You have to attend lecture and make sure you do the reading.
Ann is such a cool gal. This class is NOT an easy class though so don't expect to get an easy A. I dissected her study guides and still never managed to get higher than 84% on her exams which of course isn't that bad. With that said, be prepared for lots of information thrown at you but Ann is SO nice, funny, and helpful, the class is very doable.
she's so awesome! I really don't like biology but she makes the class really interesting. Not an easy A, but if you study hard you'll get good grades! Definitely go to class and sections
I loved Dr. Voorhies! She explains topics well and is very excited to teach us, which makes the students interested. This course did have TONS of reading, but if you did the reading and attended class you should be good to go!
Dr. Voorhies was awesome! She taught everything really well and was readily available for help. TAs and clue sessions were also awesome. One of the best classes I've taken.
Dr. Ann Voorhies was excellent at lecturing, and made it very easy to follow what she was saying.Be prepared to have to memorize a lot though, so utilize your best personal tool for memorizing things.
One of the best professors, if not the best, I've had to this day.
Dr. Voorhies is phenomenal. She lectures with great clarity and answers each question in depth. She approaches each topic with enthusiasm and makes you want to learn just to keep up with her. Although there is quite a bit of reading, the content is not hard to swallow and can be quick. Attendance is mandatory due to clicker questions.
Dr. Voorhies is one of the best professors I had at the UW. Although everyone says readings are required, I was still able to get 4.0 without actually reading textbook. But you're going to have to study her lectures a lot if you decide not to read textbook. I spent about three hours including lectures everyday to study for this class.
Great lectures, notes are uploaded online which was really helpful. Exams are very fair, not hard/not easy. Very passionate, can occasionally plug in her opinion heavy-handedly, but the distinction between her opinion and fact is usually pretty clear. Definitely a great professor, very passionate and helpful. Super fast grader, which is also nice.
Dr. Voorhies is really nice. She is enthusiastic about biopsych, everyone can tell from her lectures. The lecture is organized and fun. But her exams are a little bit hard. She always ask really specific questions. And a portion of final is cumulative, which is REALLY hard for a subject like biopsych.
She talks very fast but isn't hard to follow. She covers everything you need to know for the tests in lecture and is very clear about where the information is in the textbook and what you need to know on the test. The class is primarily memorization and the tests were MC. If you put in the effort and go to all the lectures you will do well.
Dr. Voorhies is one of the best professors I've had. Her lectures slides are great tools for studying. Tests are extremely straight forward. She is a phenomenal lecturer. She recognizes that the material in research psych is dry and mundane but she tries to make class engaging. Super enthusiastic about teaching.
Dr. Voorhies is an amazing lecturer. She explains things thoroughly and it makes things better that she is excited about what she teaches. You have to really study for her exams and read the textbook to get As. However, you can get by with just studying lectures. Not hard but still takes the effort. I 100% recommend her for Psych 202
She is a nice and good professor. You have to attend lecture. She gives clicker questions every lecture and participation is a big part of your grade in this class. The material is very dry in this class. She does her best to "spice it up" but this class is still very boring. Still, Ann Voorhies is a good professor.
Made Biopsychology fun--informative and fascinating lectures, challenging but still perfectly reasonable tests. Source material was interesting to me at least, so I found the class a great continuation of Intro Psych.
She has her stuff down and doesn't deal with any nonsense. Do your readings, go to lecture, study, and you'll do great.
There's no tests for this class, only 8 short papers and 1 final paper but don't let the amount of reading and writing scare you away from this class. She's one of the best professors that I've ever had and she makes you want to work hard. Plus the content for class is interesting and useful. I highly recommend taking it.
She is very knowledgeable, her lectures are super clear and easy to comprehend. There's a lot of material but her slides are easy to study and lectures are usually screencast.
She is so kind and knows the topics she is talking about. She is also super passionate about her topics! She's great!
I read the high ratings for this class thinking that this would be a great class to take. Unfortunately, I did not expect the class to be what it ended up to be. The teacher "lost" clicker points when the majority of the class got them right. Tests are challenging, especially when you consider this is a intro class.
Ann is a really great teacher. She's very enthusiastic about Psychology and you can tell she loves it - often rambles and spends a lot of time time on one topic, but her examples are great. Tests were mainly info out of the book, so reading is a must! Would take this class again and as well as other psych classes.
Prof. V is the coolest professor ever! She makes every single class FUN! Her lecture is very clear but you gotta keep up with the reading because there are lots of clicker ques Also, she speaks quite fast so reading will help you better understand what she's talking about. I HIGHLY recommend her. Ps. can't wait to take Biopsych with her nxt quart!!
Super fun class! Tests are pretty easy if you put in effort (read the book + lectures). Also, try to get the clicker questions right because it will help your grade a lot!
Ann has taught this class before with better structure, but by far one of the worst classes I have ever taken. In Autumn 2014, she had students submit five questions every week about the readings, and there were about 30 students in the class. So, for the final and midterm, you had to study over 500 questions to prepare. No validity whatsoever.
I was excited to take this class but was extremely disappointed by the content delivered by Ann. The material was based on her opinions and she would attempt to verify with poor statistical data. She was forceful with her views. On the tests you are expected to answer based on her views. Other students I spoke with also dreaded going to her class.
Dr. Voorhies is insanely passionate about psychology, which is refreshing and respectable, but also results in the longest and most boring tangents. She got very behind on the material she needed to cover, yet still tested on what she didn't lecture. Five tests total, one dropped, all very easy. Easy A class but often boring.
This class is difficult, lots of material covered, small details tested on. She's very clear and articulate, but slow class because lots of questions and comments by students. Assignments, tests, and mandatory quiz sec&lecture participation (clickers) extra credit available and some random extra points added on clicker questions so COME TO CLASS
I really enjoyed Prof. Voorhies' class; she was contagiously enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about the subject. She answers as many questions as she can and while the textbook is vital to passing the exams, coming to lectures alone will teach you a heck of a lot. Attendance matters because the class involves clicker questions.
Dr. Voorhies is one of the best professor I've had so far. She is very enthusiasm. Her lectures are AMAZING and she explains things really well. She is quite strict and her expectation of students are high. Tests are reasonable if you put time on your reading and review class material regularly. recommend her for psych101!!
I've never been so excited to learn about the brain until I took this class. She's super intelligent, extremely cheerful and passionate about what she teaches and I recommend her class for anyone interested in learning about the brain and behavior.
Goes on a tangent sometimes. Lecture are very clear and easy to follow. Exam questions can be very specific. Hated the readings; felt like they were useless. Participating in weekly discussions is fun but key for your grade. Very knowledgeable in what she teaches. Her cellphone policy is what I disagree with most. Class should not be labeled psych.
Professor Voorhies is an excellent lecturer because she always makes sure to clarify when something is uncertain. She cares deeply for her students and is willing to help out anytime, even in the middle of class. The tests are hard though, and she makes you work for a good grade. I definitely recommend taking her class.
Professor Voorhies was THE best instructor I have ever had in a college setting. Even though the lectures were screencast online, she made you want to show up because she was so entertaining to listen to. Her exams were very fair. As long as you know what is on the slides, you will do fine. I look forward to taking another one of her classes!!
Dr. Voorhies is the best professor I've had so far. She is very enthusiastic; her classes are super fun and interesting. I learned so much from her classes her own opinions. Her explanation is very clear and easy to understand( sometimes she speaks fast). Her exams are tough. You need to work hard for them. Recommended her for this class!
Dr. Voorhies is the main reason why I decided to major in Psychology! I have had her as a professor for every Psychology Pre-Req. course thus far and she teaches just as well in all. Psychology is interesting in itself, she just makes it more interesting! If you simply pay attention during lecture you can do well on her easy tests and pass.
I was excited to take the class then disappointed by the content of the class. I can see Ann is trying to make the class fun by raising her voice but it's been having the opposite effects. Her examples are very confusing. The exams are pretty easy. class not curved. But I would try to avoid her.
Ann was great in this Psych 403 (motivation) class. It's a small class setting, which is nice compared to most of UW's classes. Participation weighs heavily on your grade, which was scary for me as someone who doesn't talk much, but I'm 4.0-ing the class without a problem. This class has been my favorite at UW so far, HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
I truly regret taking this class. Exams were hard and instructor is sometimes rude and not approachable. It is unfair that there are a lot of questions in the exam, but the duration of the exams are very short (50 minutes only)! TAs are not helpful too. Grading by TA is very tough. Not recommended.
Dr. Voorhies was the reason I found That Psychology is my passion. As for Psych209 i felt like the class content was a little boring ( but easier)compared to Biopsych or Psych101. However, Dr.V are excellent in speaking , which made the class more exciting. EXAMS ARE BASED MOSTLY FROM WHAT SHE SPEAKS IN LECTURE!! w/ 3 EC questions on every exams.
I really really love Dr. Voorhies' classes. I have taken four classes with her. She is really clear with what she wants us to know and what will be on the exam. And more importantly her lecture is so fun and she is hilarious! I just love her! I will definitely recommend you to try her classes!
I took all of the intro to psych courses with Dr. Voorhies and she is phenomenal! It obvious she loves what she does and helps any unsure psych pre-majors fall in love too! Absolutely one of the best profs I have had so far at UW out of any programs! If you ever see her teaching a class... TAKE IT! P.S. her lectures are structured around the book
I hated my class with her. My friends and I took bets on how few of the slides she would get through, because of her useless, disorganized rambling. I took her class maybe a year ago but decided to post this after hearing a friend who just took her class say that it was so awful, it turned her off of GWSS. Would not recommend.
She rambles for days, and maybe averages about 10 minutes per slide, it's so slow I sometimes can't handle it. She figuratively beats seven dead horses per lecture. So you will more than understand the material. Easy class overall, read the lecture slides and the textbook and you're golden. Extra credit is fun too.
There are only four midterms (one dropped at the end) and one final. The professor is really nice and passionate but the things that she talk about get pretty redundant. She records her lectures so I just took notes from ppt and read the book. The tests, all multiple choice, are easy if you study for them. Also a lot of extra credit.
Very disorganized lecturer, aggravating to listen to at times because of how slowly she covers material without getting distracted. Lectures are recorded online, and tests are very easy to pass without much studying. Didn't look at the book at all. A good grade booster if you've taken psych before.
She's a good lecturer, explains concepts fine but only covers half of the material of the test in lectures, the other half you have to read them on your own. Lectures are quite slow too. This class isn't hard but any means but it takes up a lot of your time. DO NOT treat this class as a GPA booster or a fun class to balance out other hard classes.
When you start the quarter, you will hate Ann. 100%. But just suck it up because it gets better. Ann truly cares about her students and wants them to do well. She is willing to talk to students, but the students are not willing to talk to her. Read the textbook. She covers approximately 32% of the exam material in lecture. #lovelife
Study for the tests ahead of time, especially the one with brain anatomy. Do the review problems.
As long as you learn the vocabulary and read the textbook, the exams are pretty straightforward and easy. There's also easy extra credit opportunities throughout the quarter.
She's a very easy professor. Don't even show up to class, just read the textbook. If you do show up then you can have the textbook read to you. You also get a show as she stumbles over herself trying to stay politically correct. Very easy class. Quiz sections were fun... usually.
Ann is a lovely lady. Her lectures were very good but sometimes a bit dry for me. There was basically no homework outside of studying for midterms (of which we had 4 as well as a comprehensive final). There is quite a bit of reading but she uses the old edition of the textbook without the online companion and so it saves you at least $100.
Great professor. Don't go on your phones otherwise she will call you out for it. Great energy. Study for the tests well in advance otherwise you will fail. Use the book supplements and go to office hours.
She's a great professor. It's hard to say otherwise. She's very clear when she's lecturing and is incredibly down to earth. She uses a free mobile app for a clicker and a free online textbook which is awesome. The downsides of the class don't relate to her, we were a guinea pig class for some new content and she was very receptive of our struggles.
Dr. Culligan is a great individual outside class but that doesn't mean that she is a great professor. There are times that she is funny but most of the time she tries hard to be funny. I am not sure if it is just the class itself that is boring or the way that she is teaching it because you just come to class to get the read the textbook to you.
She can be very demeaning and condecending to her students at times. She often tried to force comedy that doesnt always work. She she talks very very fast and will use 2 slides in one hour.
I was expecting more from the lectures, and was disappointed. The class had a lot of content to cover and I could easily learn everything needed from my textbook, so classes felt rather dull. I also believe she has some learning to do as a teacher, I'm sure she's a fine person, but I found her to be abrasive and at times felt disrespected.
Very passionate about what she teaches and knowledgeable about the subject. Gives very clear examples for each topic. Always open for questions. Uses PollEverywhere for participation but offers an abundance of xtra credit participation to make up for some days. HW can time-consuming but teaching staff/sections are helpful. Exams are multiple-choice
Dr. Culligan's class is difficult to excel in. One of the hardest classes I have taken in my 4 years of college. Reading is very heavy and exams are multiple choice but, difficult. Basically, you have to memorize every article that is posted. Her lectures are long and just take a guess on what is going to be on exam.
Dr. Culligan is amazing and incredibly passionate about what she teaches. The course content is relatively straightforward and sticks pretty close to the textbook. Lots of reading but it's worthwhile material and it's important once the exams come around.
One of the hardest classes I have taken in my 4 years of college. Huge amount of homework and weekly assignments along with 3 exams and one week when you have to do a summary of all of the readings. If you read fast should have no problem. I found this to be difficult material emotionally so, be prepared for that.
Dr. Culligan is very interesting and accessible. She is willing to answer questions in class as well as by email or during office hours. I enjoyed her class.
Dr. Culligan does a great job of going over the material and elaborating (even if it seems excessive) so that students really remember the material. The lectures were posted online, but don't skip class too often because it really helped to be there.
This class was exceptionally easy and Dr. Culligan was a great professor! The lectures are recorded online and the reading is minimal. She answers any questions and is kind and funny. There is also no textbook, it's all online, and ample opportunities for extra credit.
Hardest course in UW. Exams are not same as the lecture content. 65 MC questions. Lots of reading.
You can tell that she's really passionate about what she teaches, but because of that she can drag on about certain subjects sometimes. Participation really counts so plan on going to every lecture possible. The class is structured pretty rigidly and there's a lot of assignments so make sure you keep your planner updated.
I had Ann every morning at 8 am. She was always scattered in her lectures, and never got through the content that was needed because she'd go on a side-tangent. Her intro to the syllabus was literally 2 days long. Tests tended to include a lot of trick questions. Interesting class, but Ann made it so much less enjoyable.
She would miss class contents, whereas the tests would still cover that.
Lectures always went longer than needed, was dismissive to student questions, and she never gave us an adequate amount of time to finish our poll everywhere questions IN CLASS.
She's amazing, one of the funniest professor I've met. Her lectures can get a little dry but she tries her best to make it fun and worth while. A lot of reading and midterms, but it's all ok if you study hard.
Assigned over 250 pages worth of articles in the last two weeks that were going to be on the final. Doesn't respond to students in regards to grades received. Lectures are virtually obsolete but you get forced to go because of poll questions. Leaves poll questions open for two seconds so be careful on your bathroom breaks
I LOVED this woman. I've rarely had a professor that I respected so much. She knows how to teach the material and is super excited to teach it to her students. She is a little over the top, but that just made the lectures interesting and dynamic. Highly recommend!
Dr. Culligan is an amazing professor! Her lectures were filled with examples and even guest lecturers to enhance your understanding of the material. Let's you keep exam questions so you can study for the final! :D
I initially took this class because everyone told me it was an interesting, easy A. Don't get me wrong, it was an easy A, but I just don't think Psychology is my cup of tea; at least, not the way Culligan teaches it. She drags ON and ON and makes you despise the content SO MUCH that you get sick of it. I suggest you take it with someone else.
The only thing that really sticks out to me is that Dr. Culligan talks SO FAST. It's so hard to catch what she says because she doesn't even stop to take a breath. I would definitely recommend taking this class with a different professor.
The worst teacher I had in UW. She didn't prepare for the classes, no logic, just scattered aroud. Funny tones, speaking fast. DON'T TAKE HER CLASSES.
Very energetic, sometimes to the point where she moves too fast to keep up. Good news is the lectures are recorded, so you can go over anything you miss. Make sure to have thick skin, she can be very condescending if you don't get every poll question correct. Be sure to show up, poll EV participation makes up a huge portion of the overall grade
She makes subject matter interesting and tries to really engage with it. She sometimes overdoes certain topics, but overall knows what she is doing. it's easy to get a good grade if you try to but also easy to do bad if you skip class
She does talk fast, but it's hard to blame her because there's a lot of material to cover. If you attend lectures, take notes and pay attention, you won't have trouble scoring well. The way she does poll ev is kinda annoying though because she doesn't give warning for when she locks the poll. Overall not bad though
The hardest class I ever took was psych202. I got lucky to find a great study group after the first exam. Professor cares about her students learning and is available outside of class
Dr. Culligan is a super fun professor. She's energetic (even at 8:30 in the morning) and she seems to really care about what she's teaching. She teaches kinda fast and in classes with a lot of material (psych 202) it can be kinda hard to keep up, but in general, if you study a decent amount, it's doable. I recommend her if you love psych!
This Professor is ridiculous.
Awful
2 midterms 1 non-cumulative final. PollEv for participation pts (need right answer) and free txtbook for the class. Content is boring but prof is fun, and records lectures. 1 outside paper due in increments throughout qtr, relatively simple. Quiz sections actually help teach content.
Ann is very clear about what assignments are due and how they will be graded. She might come off a bit blunt, but is a great lecturer. I learned so much and appreciated the annotations she gave during her lectures. As a class, PSYCH257 is super interesting and a good choice for an elective. DO THE READINGS!
Dr. Culligan was very inspirational. Was there a lot of reading? Yes. Was the lectures long? Yes. Boring? No. Was she stunning? Absolutely.
Easy class and interesting lecturer. Go to class for poll everywhere. Free textbook is a plus. Tests are easy and lecture is clear. Lots of points available. Quiz section was kind of a waste of time. I recommend the Psych writing center for finalizing the research paper.
Messes up and confuses content frequently. Makes the class more difficult than it needs to be.
Course material was dense and while she explained the material well, the actual structure of the class was very frustrating. She made the class and learning the material harder than it needed to be. Her tone in lectures can also be condescending and obnoxious to the point where it's distracting. If you like psychology, you might be able to endure.
Great person. Owns two and a half dogs amazing. The curriculum? Not so much. The content is basically all memorization and is the entire textbook. The test is semi-cumulative and intense. Super stressful. Don't believe her when she says there are extra credit opportunities, it's just three questions at the end of the test. Weedy to hell.
Professor Ann Culligan is the best professor I've ever met in UW. She talks a lot in the lecture which give us some extra but useful information. In her class, as long as you go to class every day, read texts before class, review the recording before each exam, you will find it easy to get A in the end! She is so kind and knowledgable!
I usually don't leave reviews for professors but Dr. Culligan is one of the most condescending, arrogant, and unnecessarily rude people I have ever met. This is my second class with her and I have found this opinion to be shared by many others. Her classes aren't too difficult but as a person I would say avoid at all costs.
Overall: Condescending and sarcastic tone, unprofessional, ineffective lecturer. She flies off the handle at random moments and swears at the class. Tries to be funny but comes off cringey (strong boomer energy). She uses each 50-minute lecture to explain what could have been said in less than half an hour. If you can avoid her class, do it.
She is great! I love her inspirational lecture. You can learn lots of beyond things on the text definitely from her. She has a strict standard on participation points. I don't think it's harsh for students since you should take responsibility for yourself. I took psych101 and psych209 with Professor Culligan. I mean, she is pretty knowledgeable.
She was a very knowledgeable professor and did a great job of explaining the content of the class. When she was in a bad mood she would snap really easily, but overall a great professor. She uses poll everywhere and she puts a lot of points into it, so I would definitely go to class. She knows her stuff.
Took psych 403 with Ann autumn 2019, my favorite class by far within my 3 years at UW. You do write a lot in this class, but there are no test and you have a lot of freedom. It really challenges your thinking about multiple factors of motivation. LOVE ANN
Amazing professor! All paper based, no exams.
Nice, beautiful person, and incredibly knowledgeable. Interesting and applicable material - lectures were fun. You have to write a shortish paper every single week and the readings you have to summarize can be so, so long but they're still interesting. No tests! Participation definitely matters. Can't be too afraid to speak in front of the class.
Professor Culligan was very knowledgable and passionate about the topics we discussed in class, which made her lectures pretty interesting. As long as you do most of the readings and attend lectures, you'll get an A.
Dr. Culligan has high expectations for her students, but in the way a tough-love-mom does. She can be direct, but she really cares about her students and wants to see you succeed. During COVID she was extremely accessible and kind. There is a main paper you work on throughout the quarter, weekly quizzes and readings, and discussions.
I would take class with her again for sure if possible. she's super understanding and responsive and flexible with course structures now during this pandemic. Readings and lectures are legit and not boring. You learn new things everyday with her. Weekly reading summaries of 6-8 papers length vary, quizes and a group project.
I took both Psych 202(got a 3.9) and Psych 209(got a 4.0) with her, and I'm so glad I did. She definitely knows her stuff, sincerely cares about her students, and is willing to help students in every possible ways. Her class is very well-organized and well-structured, even in pandemic. Do the readings and watch lectures in order to succeed.
Somehow she made the intro class very hard. And there was like no review questions for midterms.
Professor Culligan does know what she is talking about for sure. But her lectures do not really prepare you for the assignments to come. She lets her TAs do most of the grading so they are more help than she is.
She's a pretty nice teacher. She's funny, caring, and really passionate about teaching. The best part is that she encourages students to ask questions and whatever you post on piazza will be answered. The only bad thing is that her lecture doesn't cover everything in the textbook so you still have to read. (btw she showed us her dog in class lol)
Shes an amazing lecturer, and she wants her students to do well in her class. She is also very accessible whenever you have questions. However this course has quite a heavy workload so you have to work hard for it.
After my experiences with Ann Culligan, I can confidently say she is inaccessible outside of class, uncaring, and not understanding. If you had a good experience in this class, chances are you don't have a disability. If you need disability accommodations, I would encourage you to take your classes with a different professor.
Amazing lectures and clearly written syllabus, but hard rubric for the weekly discussion posts. Study guides are useful
Discussion posts sometimes can be tricky. Good lectures but is reading-intensive.
Lots of reading, discussion part becomes very tricky and homework uses inquisitive, which is extremely annoying compared to normal canvas quiz (take points off when you get wrong answer). As an intro class it's definitely not easy.
Amazing professor makes lectures go by really quickly and actually cares about students. The tests aren't bad but don't expect an easy A. The exam study guides are really helpful but a few questions on the exams trip you up. There is a lot of reading so stay on top of that as exam have specific reading questions. Love Culligan & would take again!!
Weekly discussion is annoying and she makes an intro level class pretty hard. Don't take her class if you're not going to study psychology as a major. Homework due dates are ridiculous, the same assignment could be due on Monday for one week and Wednesday for another, and you have to make sure to check for unexpected work due literally every day.
This class is disguised as an easy 4.0 but it is nothing close to that. The readings are extremely long and detailed and the exams are almost impossible to do well on even if you've spent a ridiculous amount of time studying for them. The class feels very monotonous and not actually beneficial and it feels like set up to fail.
So this class should be about 1 hour MWF, her zoom lectures are 2 hours at least. Its ridiculous. Then her tests are 50 questions but only 60 mins long, so you literally race. Do not take this class if you care about your GPA. Especially in a pandemic, she should be a little more reasonable.
Her lectures are pretty awful. I watched for the first week of class and then decided I couldn't sit through 2 hours of meaningless rambling 3x a week. However, you don't really need to watch lectures to do well in the class (i'm going to 4.0) and overall the amount of assigned work is manageable and she seems like a nice lady.
One thing I noticed for people who did not like her class, you have to be ready for long lectures. Dr. Culligan rambles at times, but the information given was valuable for exams and for life in general. Note: If you don't rely on your textbook a lot, like I do. I found her lectures helpful for exams and discussions.
Psych 101 was boring. Just read the textbook and take the test. The discussion posts weren't an easy 10/10 too. She doesn't have a big heart.
Her lectures are long and not really useful. Just read the books. There were questions on the exam that are not in the study guides. I gave up on the lectures in the end because she rambles too much. The weekly discussion grading is also strange. Some of the TAs would give unreasonable low scores without reason.
The class is easy to get a 4.0, if you do the work. Not sure why the ratings are so bad. The class has 3 lectures per week, one discussion post, and tons of extra credit available. Read the book, go to lectures and take good notes and you'll get an A on every exam. Exams are 50 questions, 60 min. 4 tests, 3 midterms, one final that's not cumlative.
She seems like a nice lady but is hardly accessible outside of class. She tends to beat around the bush during lectures so I stopped watching them and just read the book instead. There are weekly discussion posts that are graded pretty harshly. There is an extra credit opportunity, but don't expect an easy 4.0.
She rushes through lectures. Has a tone of voice that makes it hard to learn as well. She makes this class harder than it has to be. From the get go, on the first day of class instead of encouraging us, she discouraged my class by telling us that she was going to make things hard for us. And that we would be lucky to pass. AVOID.
Speeds through lectures, vague and subjective tests, a nice person but doesn't make the class easier, makes textbook more confusing than it already is
I've had Dr. Culligan three times, and each time she's been amazing. They actually respect their students and treat us as equals - she literally saw me with a heating pad and took the time to ask if I was alright. She's encouraging, very nice, and genuinely enjoys teaching, which is refreshing and made me want to come to class. Take their class!!
Her lecture is intersting and fun, but you should study hard for the exam. There is 4 exam, and 50 question each in 1 hour. Test was so heavy to me. Also, you should study with her lecture and textbook. You should read textbook carefully for exam. There is extra credit with doing psychological research.
Dr. Culligan is amazing. She wants you to succeed but she makes you work for it! She is very accommodating and her lectures are always interesting. It is textbook and lecture heavy, but she makes the material worth it. The tests can be hard but if you do the study guides, read textbook, and go to lecture you will be fine! Best teacher during COVID
She radiates positivity during lectures. She's very detailed in the lecture but because of this, she often goes too deeply on the specific part that she often go overtime cus hasn't explained the other part. In short, she does not really have a good sense of time. Exam-wise, not impossible but pretty hard. My problem is only that she often overtime
Even though this class makes you work for the grade, Dr. Culligan has provided a lot of extra credit to help boost our grades. It truly has been really helpful especially with the pandemic. Very lecture, textbook, and test heavy but I would recommend this prof because they actually care.
Dr. Culligan is one of the best professors Ive had. You can tell shes passionate about what she teaches, and it really helps when youre learning in lectures to have a professor who enjoys class. Online, class was optional but I dont know about in person. Lectures + reading make up the quizzes, & that + quarter long project mostly your grade.
The class is relatively easy; 2 exams, 2 essays, and a discussion post every week. The exams are tough, but doing the readings (theres a lot) and reviewing lectures helps. Essays are graded pretty easily, and so are the discussion posts. Great class overall! The readings and lecture material will have you intrigued
Failed me by literally 1%, even though Id tried to reach out to her and ask for help. Lectures are hard to listen to, is completely apathetic, and the assignments are graded too harshly. One of my least favorite professors
"Doctor" Culligan is the worst professor for psych209, if you need the prereq for the major, I advise to take with any other professor. Everything is graded super hard, and there is no debating anything. Some assignments are worth more than the exams and her instructions are always vague af. Often sidetracked and runs out of time before giving info
Culligan is a great prof! The TAs (might just be mine) are on another level though; the feedback is terrible, they dont answer emails, and when they do, they are very condescending with their replies. Overall, there are 9 skill sets, 5 writing assignments, and 3 exams. Its a great class regardless, though.
Very positive and obviously extremely knowledgeable about the subject. Loved seeing her enthusiasm about biopsych and learned immense interesting information. Class however is extremely difficult and turned me away from psych major altogether.
This class is pretty easy. There is 1 assignment that is short answer per week and there are 1-2 other homework assignments with that but everything is very manageable. I would definitely recommend this class.
I had an amazing experience with Dr. Culligan for PSYCH 101. I was genuinely interested in the class and she clearly had such a passion for what she was teaching. There is a lot of reading, but the tests for my quarter were online and open book. Does go on tangents though, but I found them very interesting.
Will ramble for a good portion of the lectures. Weekly discussion posts are graded harshly. Don't plan on having any emergencies that may not allow you to turn in an assignment. Even if you explain that the situation was out of your hands - she won't care. Very difficult to reach outside of class, expect a 2-3 day wait for a response.
This woman is amazing. We still email back and forth simply because she cares. I've never had a teacher care about me this much in all my years of schooling, and it's incredible that she cares this much with all the hundreds of students she has. I learned so much in this class--changed my life and perspective of EVERYTHING. Wish I could take again.
Run, just run. She has no curve, no extra points. Her exams are choosing from the test bank that mixed with many knowledges we never learned in class. Run!!!!
Examinations are too hard to get a high and satisfactory score. What we have learned in the course is far away from the exam content. And there are no extra credits or curves. If it is not necessary to take the psych 202 course this quarter, please wait for next quarter and take another professor's.
Dr Culligan's class is not that hard and she is very encouraging and passionate. You don't have to do well in all 5 exams to get 4.0, but you should read the textbook and watch her lectures or note. The 4 projects are easy to get full marks if you follow the instructions, and there are 2 extra credits throughout the quarter, which helped a lot.
gives trick questions in exams and pulls questions out of no where. lectures are all over the place.
Wow this class was hard. Professor Culligan is obviously extremely knowledgeable and passionate about this course however, which made it worth it. If you're majoring in psych then I'd definitely recommend taking biopsych with her but don't take it as just an elective.
Professor Culligan is very passionate about psychology and that made her lectures really interesting, but the class is a little hard to follow at times. Tests are only worth 35% which is nice, definitely a lot of material to memorize though. I've taken her for psych202 as well and it's practically the same grading structure. Overall would recommend
I love her. She cares about students and her subject. Grading and TA-Prof communication seemed a bit disorganized. Overall it was great, honestly an easy 4.0 if you attend lecture and put in the work. Midterms were not cumulative, and the final is optional.
Very concept heavy, lots of new terms. She cares about the subject and thus went on tangents a lot. Projects were nerve-wracking and worth a lot. Exams are cumulative. Make sure to read the textbook and go to office hours if you get confused.
Professor Culligan is amazing! One of my favorite psych professors here at UW. You can tell that she loves her job and cares deeply about her students. The only "bad" thing about her teaching is that she goes off on tangents sometimes and we'd end up only covering 3 slides in class. But overall, she's lovely and I'd take another class of hers.
my favorite professor at uw, loves to talk with her students. She has high yet very clear expectations
Nice professor, good TAs too. quiz sections were mandatory but i can respect that. 3 exams, 75-78 questions on each. 2 essays which were easy to write and much more forgiving than the exams. some EC available. she was lovely to listen to.
I loved this class and professor so much! Prof. Culligan gave such interesting lectures. She has a really lively personality, it's nice! Discussion sections are mandatory but they're nice and interesting honestly. The tests aren't hard just make sure to do the readings!
Discussion sections were chill. The textbook readings/lectures are kinda common sense, but research papers are interesting. Professor was super nice and passionate. The tests are pretty easy (if you pay attention) and the two papers were straight forward.
Explained that I had gotten sexually assaulted and asked for an extension on an assignment. Gave zero assistance and said she could not reopen the assignment because a built-in extension closed it. Didn't offer any extensions after what happened. Ended up being my worst grade because of the lack of academic support after a traumatic experience
Generally I think she is fine, she definitely knows a lot and teaches well, but she can be sort of obnoxious at times. I also had her for Psych 209, and that class was a lot more enjoyable. I think Culligan just enjoys teaching students who are more serious about the subject, which is why she's more irritable in lower level courses.
She emphasized the importance of reaching out for help, but when I did reach out for a 2-day extension (6 days before the due date), she cited the late policy. Gives interesting anecdotes during lecture and is obviously passionate about teaching. Exams are fair but sometimes have questions referencing specific conversations or an obscure reading.
Dr. Culligan definitely knows the content material to heart. Although I did great in the class, she can be extremely pretentious and condescending. As you will read in other comments, she does not care about your personal difficulties. Although knowledgeable, choose another professor to take.
Pretty easy class -- focused more on raising awareness than memorization (that being said, it does get biological and some points which needs studying). Plenty of opportunities to redo exams if unsatisfied with scores. Ann is a nice lecturer and clearly very passionate about the topic and open to feedback, suggestions, and discussion.
The course material was okay. Ann does care about psych, but I am not sure that she cares about her students. She was very inaccessible, and rarely responded to emails. Maybe her lack of care was due to this being a summer class?? When she did respond to emails, her replies were overall short and unhelpful. I would take different professor!!
The class was super easy. You do not need to read the material to do good. However, I had a family emergency, and did not have time to complete my work. Ann did not care and offered no support or solutions. I think that she has unrealistic expectations of her students, we are human and things come up.
Prof was not very considerate of students' concerns. Many students and I had an issue with gaining access to the textbook the week of an exam. Rather than helping or granting an extension for system error, she basically said she couldn't do anything about it. Also super nit-picky on papers. Content was very informative - great class overall.
Prof. Culligan is passionate and engaging, though the course has its challenges. Exams can be tough, but the papers are straightforward. For study prep, unstuckstudy AI and the textbook are super helpful.
dr. culligan was passionate about the subject, she is an okay lecturer, and this class was interesting but she is just overall unhelpful and doesn't seem to want her students to succeed. the class is 50% based on exams, and the exams are difficult to understand because the way she words her questions don't make any sense, so you have to be careful.
tbh she's really annoying, her lectures are so slow, and she tries to be funny but it's just cringe. I just watched them back on 2x speed. She gives unnecessary work on a topic we choose in the beginning of the quarter that doesn't really relate to the class. Was a waste of time. Doing the reading is important for tests. The content is not hard tho
Dr. Culligan is a great lecturer, super passionate and knowledgeable. She cares about her students and the subject. Class was very interesting & not too heavy of a workload. She is great about answering questions in class and making sure students understand the material. Get a note sheet on the midterms/final which is nice. Would recommend!
Least favorite professor at UW! Her classes are easy if you review the material but she makes herself only accessible to her favorite students (which if you sit in the front row you will be). Beyond the 10 people in the front row of her 300 person lectures she openly admits to not caring if they pass or fail. Fine professor, not a great person.
