She reads her presentations off of her notes so lectures sometimes sound very rehearsed. Interesting topic and the quizzes are very easy.
She is a very boring professor, but you still have to go to lecture since the materials might appear on the quiz. take arch 150 w/ someone else. AVOID AT ALL COST.
Easy 4.0. Just go to every lectures and CLUEs. Pay attention in the CLUE becoz everything the TA talks about are in the quizs.
the quiz not that bad. But I prefer taking the class with different professor. She is very unorganize during lecture which make me question about her education: she spent an hour about the first few slides and spend the last half hour speeding through the rest of the lecture. It really pissed me off.
Huppert is a very concise and effective teacher. It is important to go to every class, because that is where all the quiz material is from. I didn't open my textbook and got a 4.0. Quizzes are pretty easy, if you attend class. Somewhat dry class, but I learned a lot. P.S. you can't use your computer in the class whatsoever, so be prepared to write.
Not an interesting class. All about dry memorization. You have to go to class and take tons of notes cause quizzes come from all her slides!!! Most importantly, do not cheat on quiz cause TAs are really good at catching ppl cheating..
BORING LECTURES. No laptops allowed, goes through materials slowly, tediously, monotonously...Talks on and on and on about the same slides, then sometimes rushes through last slides for lack of time. EASY EASY class, just listen and pay a little attention, GO TO CLUE for major hints about what to study. no need for textbook. SO BORING AVOID HER!!!
Covers way too much information for a 3 credit class. The pictures she puts online have no captions. Entirely memorization based. Complete waste of time.
Prof. Huppert is clear with what she wants you to understand during lecture and provides clear examples of the concepts presented. If you have no interest whatsoever in culture, history, and how buildings have reflected that, you probably won't enjoy this 1 hr 20 min class. Otherwise, it is extremely easy. Just PAY attention and take good notes.
Easy class, just need to go to class and take good notes.
All good. Nothin scary.
The class was more interesting than others made it out to be. Go to all the classes and take sufficient notes and you should pull off a 3.8-4.0 with little work involved. Very easy 3 credits, take if you need VLPA.
By far one of the easiest classes at UW. Go (or don't) and take notes / CLUE you should have no excuse not getting a 4.0. Study for like an hour and go to clue and you'll 4.0 it without even going to class.
Ann is such a boring lecturer. She sounds more like a droning tour guide than a professor. However, overall the class is super easy. Especially if you go to CLUE, anything less than a 4.0 is inexcusable.
Content extremely easy, but tests are poorly worded which makes it hard to reason the multiple choice. Also, late class time + EXTREMELY BORING LECTURER= hard to pay full attention, easy to fall asleep. Podcasts are online, but listening to the recording is almost worse than sitting in class itself.
Very easy class, lectures are extremely boring though. Attending class is important since lecture slides online are just pictures. I did not even use the textbook to study, so waste of money there. I recommend taking it if you want easy vlpa credits.
entirely memorization based. class was a lot more difficult than i expected even though i ended with a pretty decent grade. i studied more for this class than i did in my other 5 credit class. she is incredibly boring and is unwilling to help.
100% memorization based. If you memorize all lecture notes and vocabs you'll be fine. Lecture is super boring. Don't know why others are saying that, but CLUE is not helpful at all either.
A lot me memorizing, you need to RECOGNIZE the monuments. She's a good speaker, but pretty boring. I wouldn't take this again. Also, the class is so dimly-lit, it's very easy to fall asleep, even in the first row. Don't take this.
This is an incredibly boring class. I tried to focus on her lecture, but her mundane speech just made me wanna fall asleep. And the light in the classroom of 600 people is so dim. Her quiz is not easy at all, you really need to memorize everything picture and every vocab. The CLUE is a complete waste of time. Not recommended
Oh gosh. This class is so BORING. Her voice makes me want to fall asleep, not to mention the dim lighting of the room. It was easier to take notes on my laptop since I could also do other things when I got bored. Quizzes are dumb too :(
I took this class because I heard that this class is an eazy 4.0! Great! I got the worst grade from this course!Although it's hard to succeed, the professor would give extra points to everyone if she feels the quiz is hard and the average score is low.
No use buying the textbook. Hard course, based on memorization. I don't like her lectures, they are all available on podcast so no point coming to class.
Very easy course. Textbook isn't required as long as you come to lecture, pay attention and take great notes. She is more than clear; that shouldn't be an excuse for a bad grade. The lectures are dark and dreadful, but she knows her stuff and teaches it very well. It's a commitment type of class with memorization being a plus. Easy VLPA credit.
It's a boring class. The lightness and her voice make you sleep. If you want to get good grade, you have to go to most of the lectures, pay attention and take notes. All the quiz questions are from her notes during lecture. But she only posts the images on the website, not notes. And do not buy textbook. You will never open it...
Do not take her class if you are not good at memorizing...But actually the architecture thing is interesting though the class makes you really want to sleep...She will give two more points in quiz if most people did not do well.
Class was boring. All the buildings looked exactly the same and the way she gives tests is broken. You could know everything about a building except for the one thing that she just happens to ask. Entire grade is based off only 100 questions the entire quarter and you can only miss 7 for an A.If youre looking for an easy A class, This one isnt it.
Face it - this is not an easy class. So don't take it because you need easy VLPA credits. 100% memorization required.
She taught the class well. If you had difficulty in this class it is likely because you didn't pay attention. She gives ample time to prepare for the quizzes and (at least in mine) posted recordings of her lectures online. Overall, a nice class to take.
Easy VLPA! I never attended class except on quiz days because it was screencasted and didn't buy the textbook and got a 4.0! Class grade in based on 4 quizzes each worth 25 point, can miss 7 points and still get a 4.0. Quizzes based only on lectures and not on textbook!
Her rants about miscellaneous things with the buildings gets you a bit lost, and she doesn't specify certain things that she wants you to know on the tests. (The tests ask for: name of monument, year built, where, who the architect was, and notes)... Half the time she doesn't clarify the architect and is very harsh on grading both papers and tests.
My negative experience with the class probably had to do with me being in a very negative mental state this quarter, but I found the lectures dull and the tests absurdly difficult - I couldn't memorize that much material and no other class has asked me to. Material's good and ta's are nice, but only take if you're up for a difficult course.
This class is all about memorization (names, locations, date, building types...etc.) You don't really need the textbook, except the vocabs. But you can always go to the library and look for them. Her tone is kind of boring and makes you want to sleep...
EXTREMELY boring lecture!Grade only base on four 25 point quiz which makes nonsense. During lecture she just read off power points which made me never want to attend the class.
I'm just not sure if I am taking an ancient travel class or what..it's supposed to be an architecture class, yet I don't feel like the material she prepared are appropriate.
Textbook is unnecessary. Having the course packet out while taking the test is helpful since most of the answers are in the outline. She is extremely clear to the point where she drags on. The class is boring but easy VLPA. She provides you with the tools necessary to succeed and tests are straightforward, no excuses and blame for not doing well.
Took the class because friend told me it's easy 4.0. But it's NOT. It's easy ONLY IF you take it with a bunch of friends. Lectures boring, content more like art history. Least favorite class at UW so far (first year).
She's not flexible. Wants you to succeed though.
Huppert is a genuine professor and great human being. Barely cracked the book open. Lectures are pretty much mandatory if you want to do well in the class. 5 online quizzes each worth 25 points and you can drop one. Would recommend taking with a friend because lectures are long, and the lights are dimmed.
Easiest class on campus. She'll talk to you like you're still in high school and the lectures are sometimes boring, but I would recommend going to them.
It isn't really an easy VLPA. However there is a lot of help provided. The review session went over everything you would need to know and it would prepare you well for the quizzes. Would not recommend if you want an easy 3 credits for a GPA boost.
Amazing lecturer. She knows the subject very well and makes a dull subject interesting. Was the easiest class I have ever taken in college. You're entire grade is the best 4 out of 5 multiple choice online quizzes. Honestly you can go to just the TA quiz review CLUE session and not attend lecture and still get an A. Great professor, easy class.
Huppert has a great interest in her subject and it really shows through her lectures. I never read the book but attended all lectures and the CLUE sessions and got a 4.0. Lectures are informative and there is little fluff, most information gleaned through lecture is on the quizzes. An easy class due to Huppert's great lectures.
This is the most boring lecturer at UW no question. The tests are just random facts, often times more related to straight up history than architecture, and are hard to really do well in. Like I could maybe remember all this random stuff for the tests, but her voice is much too boring. Worst professor in my 4 years of UW :(
I really hate this class. Her lecture is not helpful at all. I can even fell asleep when I took the front seat and tried to take notes. She treated student very harsh and taught student in her special way. Her ppt is not help at all, just filled with various meaningless photos. Hope you guys don't take her course. Take care!
She gives very short lectures that it is longer than my nap time. Lectures are fun and full of pictures that you cant find on google.
So her lecture is boring as hell however the grading scale is really nice. 90% is your target to get a 4.0
Lectures seem endless and are very boring. Beware, she dims the lights and has a fairly monotone grandma voice, so naps are an automatic bodily reaction. All the information is very straight forward. Attend the CLUE review sessions, they are more helpful than the actual class.
Great lectures. She has very deep knowledge in the subject. If you are someone who are interested in history, this class is definitely for you. I learned a lot from her lectures and slides and enjoyed the class. The exams were not easy; however, if you have interest on architectural history 4.0 is achievable, which was what I get.
Very boring. The 4 quizzes are tough.. unless you know bunch of people in class. not an easy VLPA. I hate the class. I fall asleep. The quizzes are random. Clue session helped a little.
Easy class to pass (0.7, D) but her lectures are too boring to try to listen, so its hard to get a 4.0 without having someone literally transcribe her lectures. 4 Online 30 minute quizzes with 20 questions, multiple choice. Panopto record. Her class is 1 hour 20 minutes, which is too long. If you just want a 0.7-2.0 use Google Chrome and Wikipedia.
This is the single most boring class you can ever take. Huppert treats the material as if it is the most important stuff you will ever learn when in reality no one cares. my advice is get in a group and take the quizzes together, one person works the rest google the answers. There is no need to ever go to class.
I like history, but there was nothing I could do to stay awake in her painfully boring lectures. Do not take this for an easy or enjoyable 3 credit class. Quizzes are composed of obscure, irrelevant facts-I got B's with the help of Google and a study group. She usually seems to be in a bad mood and annoyed by students. Worst class I've taken at UW.
Effective lectures that easily convey the ideas she wishes to get across. It must be hard to condense over 1000 years worth of architectural history into a single quarter but she did it well. She obviously cares about the subject very much and cares about the success of her students.
This class should be 5 credits instead of 3- the tests and papers are lengthy and require lots of studying! Huppert is a dry, slow lecturer which is a struggle to get through early in the morning. Probably 75% of the class skipped lectures to watch Panopto on a regular basis. But, she seems like a nice woman and posted a lot of resources.
She was really boring and took forever to get through lectures. More often than not, we would have to stop halfway through talking about a building because class was over. The tests involve A LOT of studying. She didn't seem that engaged or excited about the material.
Lectures are dry and long. It should really be 5 credits instead of 3. Would not take again.
This class was meant to be a 4.0 class with other teachers but she made this class so hard by making things so much harder than they are . Beware of her quizzes!
This class isn't difficult, but reading the sections can help with quizzes. But the lectures are very difficult to attend, she just doesn't have the tone to get students interested in the class, or architecture. Use the textbook, and you will find a lot of the answers to the quizzes, and Quizlet helps.
she talks rly slow so its easy to fall asleep. idk why u would do the readings for this class, the lectures r enough. for a 4.0 just take computer notes on onenote and type down every little detail she mentions (and add pics) so u can ctrl + f everything for the online quizzes. also! use the outlines she gives !! so u know what she wants u to know
Disrespectful, rude, and monotone. So hard to stay awake during lecture, and so incredibly boring. The only thing you're really graded on is the online quizzes that are incredibly hard to receive a decent grade in and on top of that they're timed. Not an easy 3 credit 100 level class.
Difficult exams that require lots of memorization and unnecessarily long essay that was graded harshly (5 pages about a *single* building, seriously?). She's very boring and there's no point in participating in class as she'll always make you look dumb and imply that your answer wasn't good enough...
Pretty monotone but easy to follow. Taken async the class wasn't so bad but I always listed to lectures (30mins) on 1.5 speed or higher to make it easier to listen to. I didn't read the textbook and did fine but I watched every lecture and some twice if I was worried about the content. 4 quizzes and 2 short papers and weekly discussion posts req
This was a difficult course. Alot of memorization on small details that may only be brought up once. Difficult to take notes because you don't know what you really need to remember and a great deal of information is provided. 2 papers, weekly discussions due Friday but you didn't know the prompt until Wed, 4 quizzes throughout the quarter.
you can tell she's just reading off a paper she prepared ahead of time. So boring and slow. Stopped attending 3 lectures in, and just watched recordings at 2x speed. Its and easy A if you just use her lecture outlines and take notes on the terms she lists. It's only interesting if you like this stuff.
Honestly, yeah shes kind of boring during lecture but the class is an easy A if you know how to take good notes. The quizzes are based completely on the lectures and the textbook isnt necessary. She also had the class recorded online so you are able to go back and rewatch lecture to get better notes. Just stay focused and it shouldnt be too hard
The class itself was very simple and easy: 3 open-note tests, 3 short assignments and 2 hour lectures. BUT a lot of it was really sleep-inducing. I wanted to learn about cool and beautiful architecture throughout history, but it was only interesting towards the end of the quarter. Most of it was about old stone, brick and mud structures... 0_o
dont take if you have a short attention span. however, i took notes of everything she said via microsoft onenote and uploaded her powerpoints and it was easy. didnt even need to study. A lot of ppl bombed the quizzes bc they simply didnt go to class. it's not hard if you show up and stay engaged, in fact its really easy lol, and fascinating!
Watched the recorded lectures on 2x speed and followed the lecture outlines. Open note tests made this class pretty easy if you did the prep work before hand.
You need to memorize 44 monuments for each test, including historical components and spatial designs. Inconsistent grading, Will was a harsh grader and lacked communication of how some papers were graded. Some TA's are harsh than others when grading which makes it impossible to have a consistent grading system. Also its only 3 credits, not even 5.
People who give her high ratings for this class is lying to themselves.
I'm certain the good reviews here are from covid when this class was an easy A. Abysmally dull lecturer. Said she wanted to cover a diverse range of architecture, then focused almost exclusively on European churches and mosques. Incredibly pretentious and insensitive, and her policies are ridiculous. Also, far too much work for a 3 credit class.
not fun class :(
More effective than melatonin.
The lectures are superb. She gives a very complete overview of the material. the slides are clear, clean, with excellent images, maps, and very helpful notes. Take this class for a good foundation in History of Architecture, even if that's not your major.
The sheer amount of work required in this class for it only being 3 credits is insane. Tests expect you to have so much memorized; what structures look like (there's at least 50 a test), significance, structural details, etc. She didn't print enough tests once and we only got a half hour to take a test but didn't do anything to counteract it.
Huppert's lectures were fairly normal for a 100-level class, they weren't necessarily inspired but she made it clear what would be on the tests. The assignments were not relevant to what we were learning or being tested on and took a lot of outside-of-class work to understand what she wanted. Heavy Poll-Everywhere usage.
Way too much work for a 3 credit class.
She has an obsession on Italy architecture and spend hella time talk about it. When it comes to other places like Japan, China, she went over it as fast as possible and you will have to dig into it yourself for the test. Girlie is unprepared and didn't print enough test paper too hello? TAs had to run tf out of themselves to print it last minute.
Professor was unprepared and was passive aggressive. Lecturing focused on Rome and Europe, other regions she was not detailed and seemed as through she didn't want to present on these especially China, Japan, and Mexico. She abruptly cancelled class, didn't print enough midterm exams and cut students time on the exam, her computer died mid class.
Professor Huppert does not want you to succeed in this class. If you are looking for a 3 credit class, this one isn't that hard (except for the actual part of getting through the painfully boring lectures). The content is interesting, but she makes it hard to listen to. She is rude and has weird grading.
Ann Huppert is an extremely hostile professor. She is very defensive and lacks the ability to take criticism or answer questions about grading. This class is graded on very few points, so losing just a few will tank your grade. She expects a lot from students who are just taking her class for an easy 3 credit A&H.
In theory this class should have been easy and interesting, but it was neither of the two. It is relatively easy, but there are high expectations for a class few people who actually care about architecture take. She is extremely passive aggressive and is a poor communicator. Did I mention her lectures are extremely boring?
Class is pretty boring, workload is manageable with only 3 quizzes and 3 assignments, She uses Poll Everywhere during lectures and grades participation, but honestly, staying awake is the hardest part of this class. The assignments are easy and straightforward, making it an easy class overall, but it feels like a hassle for just 3 credits.
Ann killed my interest in architecture. Her lectures are incredibly boring, and her test are literally identifying images from her slides. Avoid if possible
Inflexible, won't admit when she's wrong. Boring readings, un-engaging homework and class lectures.
Boring and rude. Uses Poll Everywhere for attendance. Lectures were so bad staying home and doing the poll from bed and watching the lectures in 1.5x speed later was so much more enjoyable than sitting and bearing through meaningless mumble and snide comments about students grade results. Constantly behind on content.
Ann is a good professor who is passionate about architecture and her class. My only complaint is that for a three credit class, she gives out a lot of homework. We had weekly discussion posts, two quizzes, a midterm, a final, and a short response. Studying for this class was equal to the time I take to study for my 5 credit classes.
Unreasonable amount of work for a 3 credit class, so do not take if you want free A&H credits. I studied more for this than physics. Lectures can be verrry boring, but taking notes are essential for success on exams. (You get a cheat sheet, use it). Not helpful with answering questions about course organization, but knowledgeable about content.
Straightforward and standard class if you're an arch major/ in CBE, but definitely not worth it if you aren't interested in that stuff. Huppert is very passionate about this stuff and expects you to be too
There is way too much work for a 3 credit course, and the lectures are quite boring. I wouldn't take this course unless you need to for a prerequisite.
Long, boring lectures. Learning groups were required, and were pretty much pointless. The content was dry compared to other architecture courses provided at the UW. The class was easy, but the professor was poor.
