Her enthusiasm for teaching was apparent, but her tests were tedious and had many extraneous questions. She also had a tendency to drone on and on, and would yell at students that had cell phones as if they were in high school. Discussion courses were interesting though because we got to analyze works of art at the Blanton.

Johns is an amazing professor. She really knows the history behind the pieces and can usually answer random questions that aren't necessary to know about the pieces (or if she can't, she'll usually research it for you or direct you where to go). If you need an art credit or are just interested in learning more about art history, take her class.

Dr. Johns is an excellent professor. Her biggest pet peeve is anything that distracts the class - i.e. phones or talking while she's talking. Terrible class!! For each test you are expected to memorize at least 50 works of art, the last test has over 70 images to memorize and know every detail about. The discussion section is a mandatory visit to the blanton that's hard. You have to answer about 6 essay questions on pieces there. And they use an app that always messes up and ur screwed.

Prof. Johns always makes lectures really interesting and the weekly visits to the Blanton are really cool. If you want a VAPA that won't bore you, this is the one!

Grades really depend on your TA. Johns rambles a lot in lecture. Quizzes can trip you up and drop your grade if you don't read/pay attention in lecture. Just take comprehensive notes and go to office hours with your TA, and you should get an A. Just a nuisance more than anything, especially for a VAPA credit.

I was going into this class with high intentions but I'm disappointed. The workload is very manageable but the formatting of the tests is very unusual. The grading feels overly subjective. You're required to state significant facts on each art piece: I continuously received little to no credit for my facts despite having extensive information.

have to pay attention to the class and take lots of notes, but you'll do well on quizzes if you do. she's funny and engaging so I enjoyed lectures. for tests you just need a doc with a picture, notes, and title/info which I just made during lectures. readings are not necessary to do well. weekly sessions at blanton are with TA and are fine

My thoughts on this course have changed a lot compared to earlier in the semester (I wouldn't say I liked it at first). The first test is pretty rough because you're still grasping the expectations of the course, but after that, it's pretty smooth sailing. Decent amount of work, show up to class and attend your TA meetings and you will be fine.

Dr. Johns' ARH301 is an engaging VAPA class. The lectures are informative, the quizzes are manageable, and using study tools like Unstuckstudy helps prepare for the open-note tests. Overall, a solid choice for VAPA credit.

I took this for my VAPA and it was easy but as someone who doesn't like art that much, it was a bit annoying. You have to be present for every online lecture for a quiz and during TA sections. The tests were open notes but the number of artworks to note was a lot and most of the time weren't seen on the test. Test time is also really short online.

I would 100% take this class again. No homework, but 5-question quizzes each class which were easy in my opinion. My TA was great and it was fun to have discussion section with her. Make sure you participate in discussion because that can bring your grade up a lot. Open note tests, the only hard part about them is time management and the essay.

decent VAPA course to take. tests make up 60% of grade and are graded by your TA so a lot of it is luck on who your TA is. best to make a study sheet before the test of all the significant facts cause you only have 50 min to do 10 short answer and 1 essay question. pop quizzes every class too, it's definitely not the laid back vapa but its okay.

Your TA grades all the tests; make sure you know their expectations well before the first exam. Tests have a lot of questions (short answer and essay) and very little time, so if you're a slow writer this course isn't a great fit. Lectures were interesting and the in-person sessions can be fun if you enjoy looking at art.

Students are expected to memorize the titles, artist names, dates, and locations of 40+ artworks before each test. Knowing this trivia is 50% of the grade. Lots of readings, and told to "use critical thinking skills" to discern which we need to read. It's a guessing game. Prof says covid and the flu are "not serious" reasons to miss class.

This class was WAY harder than I expected for an art history course. The professor is clearly knowledgeable and passionate, but the amount of memorization is overwhelming. Be prepared to analyze tons of artwork in extreme detail, and the exams are no joke—you're expected to recall names, dates, styles, and historical context with just a notecard.
