great teacher helps you with essays only if you take the iniative, do the revisons will learn a lot if u take the class shes seems hard in the first few days but she really cares about students
I loved this class! The readings we got were very interesting and insightful. Wrote a lot of papers, but I thought it was relevant and therefore not a waste of time. Michaels is freaking awesome. Do the work and you'll do fine. I definitely recommend her.
greta teacher, get on her good side and she'll give you a good grade. recommend her. got an A felt like i deserved a B
She never explains assignments clearly. We will talk about our how our weekend went all class people, then she will assign a totally irrelevant paper at the last few seconds of the period. English is my strong subject, but it was impossible for me to get any exceptable grades in her class. If you dont suck up its very difficult to pass!
She spent the first 20 minutes of every class on a Marxist Feminist rant and left no room for dissent. Often times these rants were filled with factually inaccurate information. Almost every assignment was strongly related to her extreme political views. I learned nothing of value in this class. Also she definitely plays favorite with her students.
def plays favorites...especially with fellow filipinos...not very helpful and wasted a lot of class time going over the same stuff or talking about peoples personal lives...avoid her if u can...if not get on her good side
very hard to pass because she doesn't clarify the homework assignments
Worst class ever. No direction, no organization, no point to any of it. Learned nothing. Just an excuse for her to make students read the same stuff she read in grad school--Marxist theory and feminist theory. Ridiculous daily assignments like journal entries and summaries...are we in grade school again? Stay far away and keep your sanity.
LIBERAL, LIBERAL, LIBERAL. Talks a lot about her daughter wastes a lot of time. The papers she asks you to write are sometimes irrelevant. Talks way too much on random thing.
Wow, not my favorite teacher. She makes you feel dumb, and never says anything good about your writing. She isn't helpful, and always seems annoyed. I started off liking her, but she makes you feel horrible about yourself! I would avoid her class if possible.
She makes me hate school. She gets angry at students when they don't agree with her opinions, has no trust in students to think for themselves, burdens students with TONS of pointless busy work (like turning in their readings with annotations to prove they read it and writing 2-3 essays per class), and is constantly late for class or leaving early.
I feel like this semester all my money went to waste because of this one professor. I'm sure the course could be productive, but not with this professor. She picks favorites (it's obvious who they are) and her lectures are TERRIBLE. We had the same lecture at least three times... on basic things! She is very demeaning. Avoid her class!
She graded pretty easily. honestly i'm not sure if she even read some of the assignments towards the end. No txtbook but we had to pay HER for the paper hand-outs. The assignments were never explained clearly. She was very disorganized, never on time, and very opinionated. However, work load not to bad.
Shes not the easiest of teachers but not impossible. Very chill and relaxed. Writing is sometimes...weird. Wasnt sure what she asked for sometimes. But not a hard class at all. Just do your work and you'll be fine.
Just don't argue. Agree with this woman. That and just do whatever bullcrap criticism she puts on your paper, and the A is yours. Dont worry about her opinion, we all know she's wrong. Just nod and smile.
She is the most unorganized teacher. She gives out a syllabus every time, but does not stick to the date when papers are due. Expect to write useless essays and rewrite them. She's a hard grader. I don't recommend this teacher
Every day she wanted something different. Her assignments were very confusing and did NOT make any sense. AVOID this teacher. She is not approachable and is annoyed with everyone.
Terrible teacher, she always tried to push her liberal views on her students when she doesnt even understand the opposing argument. Professor Michaels also is never clear with her directions. Over half the class would constantly be asking what is due and when. She makes a schedule but necer follows it. You would be better off with another professor
AVOID HER! She is a hard grader. It is very hard to please this lady with your writing. Take another Eng 20 teacher
Prof. Michaels' class made me work hard for my grade. She helped me become a better reader and writer even though I struggled at first. She assigned different readings, some really interesting, some not (the handbook was boring). Definitely an interesting class for a writing class.
She was the worst teacher I've had. Ever. She's not clear. She changes the syllabus weekly. She doesn't at all understand her own reading material. And she gets angry at you when you tell her you don't understand, like you're doing it to spite her. Take her classes at your own peril.
She's okay. You must allocate plenty of time to do her work. She's hot, though.
Professor Michaels was a good professor. However, when I did take this class the workload was quite a lot. Everyday was a reading assignment. The workload did die down after a while. She was very helpful with our essays and I did learn a lot. It's been a while, but i believe I didn't need a book for her class. She's hot btw.
She is a hard grader. However, she will help you receive the grade you want. She is very helpful. She definitely helped me improve as a writer and reader. One of my favorite teachers! No doubt.
She's a really challenging/great She gives out so much work but in the end your writing will improve. One of my most stressful/enjoyable classes! haha
There is no question this class is tough, but it is possible to get the grade you want. I was very concerned at the beginning because English was my weakness. But she will help you become the best writer and reader you could be. I feel really confident in my writing now. Take her class. I highly recommend it. Amazing teacher.
Professor Michaels, is the kind of person who make the college Fun, and who really care about her students, and really connect to them. She brings alot on the table, if you are willing to learn, this is the class. This is BEST BEST English I have taken so far, and I have learnt so much from this class, combined all of my english classes in past.
One of the best English Classes, PERIOD. This class has been so much fun for me this semester. I AM GLAD I DID TAKE THIS COURSE. This class basically prepared me for MCAT, And for readings, and writings in General. I RECOMMEND Professor Michaels. You will have to Work hard, BUT IT IS WORTH IT. I learned ALOT. Best english Class on Campus!
This professor was amazing she really cares and loves to help. Shes funny and an has an amazing personality. Deff a great teacher and class that helped me.
I loved her. She's an amazing person inside and out. She clearly loves to teach, she is very understanding, very helpful, and gives great advice on papers. I loved this class and her as a professor. Shes very modern and up to date relates everything to scenarios we know about. Shes amazing.
Strict attendance/tardy policy, but is late to almost every class. Whines about students not doing their homework before class, but is full of excuses about why our papers aren't graded yet. Swears like a sailor, which makes her seem relatable at first, but eventually it just feels like she trying too hard to be young. Absolutely plays favorites.
Avoid taking this class!!
I loved this class. Professor Michaels is a great teacher. She was very helpful when it came to the writing assignments. She is not an easy teacher, so you have to work hard for the grade you want.Take her advice and criticism when it comes to revising your work, it will benefit you in the long run. Overall love her class.
She's funny and curses a lot,but then she slaps you with 20 pgs of reading with 10+ questions : not cool. I only enrolled into this class, so i could improve on my writing. But her grading my papers, has made me hate writing, because nothing is ever good enough for her! She's a inspirational speaker, but not a good teacher. Loved the feminism tho:)
Professor Ann Michaels is a pretty good professor because her way of teaching is easy to understand, for the most part. She's also pretty helpful. Despite all of this, I felt like her feedback was crap. I felt like I knew what i was doing but nope, there's always something wrong She's a tough grader so be prepared for a lot of reading and writing.
Try your best to avoid this class!
Professor Michaels was a great professor. I had her for English 10 and 11. I loved her class, she is funny, and really wants everyone to do well. She is a tough grader, but if you do the work and listen to her comments you will be successful.
Professor Michaels is one of the best professors on campus. She is very helpful and makes the class a lot easier than you would expect. The discussions in class are very interesting and hilarious. The essays are broken down and easy with all the feedback received from her and other students. No textbook in this class, instead you read articles.
Good Professor yet she is a hard grader. You must take her advice and spend a lot of time reediting your papers. At the end of semester, it will all be worth it.
Professor Michaels is a wonderful professor, she helped my writing improve so much. Her lectures are very useful and she's full of knowledge. If your easily offended then you probably shouldn't take her. She's honest and straight to the point, she also curses ALOT.
Professor Michaels has high expectations but is helpful and very effective at teaching her students the material and course goals. She is funny and makes the class bearable. She is a tough grader but if you follow directions, execute, ask for help and pay attention you'll be fine. Sac is lucky to have her.
I may be a little biased being a science major, but this is possibly the worst english class I have ever taken. Michaels is unclear with her instructions and hardly gives feedback on any assignments. It is hard to get in contact with her outside of class. English 5 is a mandatory class, but I would advise taking it from another professor.
Professor Michaels is a really good teacher. She gives a lot of homework and you have to write a lot of essays, but she make sure that you know your stuff. You have to show up to class every time or else you will fail because you will get behind.
Literally I loved English before taking this class. Professor Michaels is an amazing person but a horrible teacher. She is unclear about what she wants on assignments, assigns too many assignments at one time, lacks in giving feedback, picks favorites, and makes the nonfavorites feel like losers when they ask her a one on one question.
Professor Michaels is a very funny and interesting woman, but she spends most of class talking about unrelated topics and then drops an ugly homework bomb on you. She often forgets and loses assignments, and they are all graded with a fine tooth comb. As an English major, I often found myself drowning in her multitude of assignments.
I did not like Prof Michaels at the beginning of the semester because she comes off as rude, she curses and doesn't really care. She assigns readings which you have to annotate and write essays about good topics and issues. Towards the end I loved her! She is a tough professor because she wants you to learn something and wants to help you.
She is a very funny yet straight forward teacher. The class requires so much time and effort. There is a TON of homework and thick packets to annotate. Sometimes assigns 2-3 packets a night. She does comment and gives helpful feedback on papers and allows revision.
She is the director of the writing center so she will hold you to a high level, even as freshmen. She will give you assignment she gives to her graduate students. Her reading assignments are always so long and require a lot of time. Four main essays with a bunch of small papers throughout the semester. Makes the assignments have unnecessary stress.
Professor Michaels is my favorite professor at Sac. She's so down to earth, but she also pushes you to learn and develop as a writer. She curses and is very blunt, which some people might not like, but it's what I enjoyed the most. Every class we had was interesting. Would highly recommend her!
Great professor, can be a little intimidating at first which can scare some but is actually super cool, she is a tough grader but is willing to help. You do have to do a lot of writing but your writing will definitely change. So, if you want to improve your writing then this is the professor for you, you don't even have to buy the textbook.
She is the worst English professors I have encountered in my college career! She is horribly organized, she digresses, her lesson plans don't help with the assignments, she takes ONE WHOLE MONTH to leave feedback for EACH writing assignment, she is unprofessionally moody in class and she personally cancelled FIVE scheduled teacher conferences.
I absolutely loved Professor Michaels she is not like other professors that do not even take the time to read your essays. She takes her time and gives great feedback. Some people complain about the amount of assignments, but practice is the only way you get better as a writer!
She is an excellent teacher. When we needed extra help she was willing t push back dates for our class, gave back feedback for our assignments and gives you time to correct them. She is really funny and makes thee class enjoyable. She is a heavy grader but she gives you all the tools you need to pass her class. I had her for English 5
Amazing professor, super funny, and is always willing to help. Essay's/Homework was a big thing in this class. Also she is head of the writing center so she is really helpful when it comes to writing
Professor Michaels is a pretty cool professor. She curses a lot during class, but in a funny way. It's not that rude, uncomfortable or try-hard cursing. I think she's very nice and caring of each and every student, you can tell she wants you to work hard and succeed.
One word for Ann Micheals, Awful ! She has the most unorganized and vague ways of teaching. She is the only university level professor so horribly unorganized. If you want to listen "F"word 10 times in the class without any reason and all kind of explicit language along with it, take her.
I had her for ENGL 5 and I will say its pretty tough class, just do all your work and you'll be good. Although it is A LOT of work, such as annotating and essays (you know the usual stuff). If you show up to class, it'll show that you're trying and she'll grade easier on you.
She will put you on blast for your writing if she thinks it's not good enough. She will question you and make sure you know what you're talking about. And she assigns a sh*t ton of reading. BUT, she is a wonderful writer. She can be strict, but I have learned so much from her than any other professor. She's hilarious and actually a real genius!
Unethical and unorganized. No student has reported her yet for the kind of explicit language she use in class. Unbelievable !!!!
Her teaching is not the best. She's a very cool professor because she likes to relate to us in such a way that sometimes she tends to use very explicit language during class. This can be very awkward sometimes because some students don't use this type of language, and it can cause some problems amongst the students and the professor.
This class is so stressful and difficult for no reason at all. The actual work is all busy work nothing she gives out is to move you along as a writer as much as she says it will. A 30 page packet that you have to annotate in two days is not teaching me anything. She makes the class extremely stressful, she is so unorganized and unpredictable.
TOO MANY readings to annotate, 4 essays, and a research project(maybe 2) which you must keep revising and will not be graded until the end of the semester(meet with her to get an IDEA of your standing). Everything turned in as a portfolio that decides if you pass or fail. Curses too much for no reason. 3 absencesdropped. overall, STRESSED&CONFUSED
Look, this lady is tough. She's an adult and she will treat you like one. There is a lot of work in this class yes, but it WILL ultimately help you. It's a tough class and she is a tough grader but it's because she has the credentials to be such a tough grader. Shes an author and she has a lot of experience. Get an English tutor. Meet with her.
This class has so many busy work assignments, I have never felt more overwhelmed in any class in my entire college career. The professor provides little guidance and is unpredictable in mood swings; R.I.P to those she yelled at in class, I felt second hand humiliated for you. I personally gained nothing from the lectures but they were mandatory.
Had her for English 10/11, wouldn't recommend this class take ENG 5 if you want an easy class with a different Prof. not her. She's not organized and gets mad if you don't participate in class. You will have to read a lot and annotate packets. Good luck if you stick with this class, shes always late too.
She is a great teacher. Yes, she is a tough grader. She grades tough because she wants people to succeed in the long run. I did not want to take the class, but did and became more comfortable. She cares about each of her students and does her best for personalized instructions. Communication is key.
First comes off as easy going and relatable, but when it is time to learn/teach she tends to go off topic. This is fine for a while but she expects for you to know and understand things that she hasn't taught. She is very unorganized and often forgets due dates that she's rescheduled herself. I didn't get much from this class.
Michaels is unprofessional and controlling. She forgot to pass out readings and blamed the entire class for coming unprepared. She finds it hilarious to swear and act like she's a friend rather than someone we are paying to teach us. She does not do a decent job preparing us to be tutors and spends most of class wasting time. Would not recommend.
Professor michaels class is often spend teaching students how to think critically and how students may use this in their writing. She often gives students homework as a way to teach students concepts on becoming a great writer. Her final exam is writing a paper.
If you actually care about becoming a better writer and reader then this class is not that bad. Prof may be strict and tough on grading but she is helping us in the end. This isn't a class where you can bs your way through, you have to try. Although, she is kind of disorganized and uses explicit language a little too much for a professor.
Rather than directing us to the resources we might need she doubts the abilities of those who need assistance. She is very inconsistent with her work instructions, she says one thing in class but says another outside of class. She cusses way too much and inappropriately. She also waited to the last two weeks of the semester to grade our work.
Plain and simple... she sucks! This class is difficult for no reason. It is impossible to get an A. She grades everything last minute. Its the last week of the semester and she barely started grading. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
She was such a tough grader and didn't grade anything until the last two weeks of the semester. You either get a B or an F, or you could do a bunch of extra non-assigned work to get an A. Her Canvas page instructions contradicted the instructions given during class and she ignored my emails various times. Would NOT take this class again.
If you see this class in your class schedule before the semester starts, get out of it now! Didn't grade anything until the last two weeks of school, cusses way too much and thinks she's funny, also has very confusing directions that say one thing but mean another. If you wanted a nice ENG class starting out, this class is the opposite of that.
In class when you participate, and don't give her the exact answer she'll call you out on it. Also expect instructions that don't really make sense with a hefty load of homework.
Constantly piles up work thats due in a tiny time frame (gave us four assignments due the end of the next day). Many assignments, if you don't do/are missing, automatically makes you fail the class. Oblivious to mental health concerns.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. She was a replacement at UC Davis because the original professor fell ill , and all of the negative reviews are true. She took a week to set up her Canvas page (albeit not entirely her fault), is disorganized, rants for 2 hours straight, and assigns random assignments with random and impossible deadlines. BEWARE
Awful professor. Unprepared for lecture and ends up ranting for 2 hours. Assigns way too much homework most of which she doesn't talk about in class, you just get a nice surprise when you check the assignments on canvas. Assigns weekend homework, 1 major paper per week. If you miss a minor assignment she'll publicly shame you.
Worst prof ever. Very unorganized, inconsistent grading. Thinks she is laid back but too much swearing. Gives a lot of homework (some due on weekends). Submit part of an assignment late? Get a zero for full assignment. Readings are ok. If you see her on your schedule, switch sections! Not worth tanking your mental health for a UWP class. Too hard.
She's a good English professor if you really want to improve your reading and writing skills. However, she's not a good choice if you are taking more than 12 units because she assigns so many homework. Not only during the weekdays but she also assign homework during the weekends and spring break. She never cares for her students mental health.
She assigns an insane amount of homework for an entry level writing class, and has minimal feedback on papers. I was able to get an A- in the class but she is refusing to round up my 92.84 to a 93 which is so frustrating
BEWARE
Makes me want to k*ll myself. Gives out so much work and doesn't bother mentioning it until the end of class. Literally wastes your time just ranting the entire class just to assign a bunch of work that has nothing to do with lecture. Expects you to write so much every week in all the assignments combine. Expect around 1-2 thousand words a week.
This class will improve your writing but she assigns hella homework and essays so If you're not a student that its consistently on top of it, doesn't pull excuses or you will fail her class. don't even think of skipping 3 times you'll grade will drop Don't get me on her calling out her students anyways, good luck! I don't recommend for first years.
Do not recommend her to anyone esp new incoming freshman. She made my semester living hell. She kept giving me a 0 on all my papers even though they were complete.I had to get a tutor bc shes not willing to help/respond back. She tries to be "funny" and say r*cist things in class. She calls students out in front of the whole class for their mistakes.
Wouldn't recommend. Assigns too much hw, even on the weekends. Barely teaches anything. She'll tell you one thing and then expect something else from you. Swears too much, pretends to be "chill" but gets annoyed easily. Multiple times where the entire class didn't come prepared because of HER lack of instructions but she'll blame the class instead.
This professor is amazing I would recommend taking her class. However, she expects you to know things already since this is a college English class and every professor expects you to know what they're talking about. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS IT HELPS YOU OUT SO MUCH. Yes, there's a lot of homework and readings every week but it's to help you.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MAJOR MISTAKE Way too much work for a basic class Will act like the best teacher ever Make you think her class is the most important subject will act chill but is not GET ANOTHER PROFESSOR
You either get a B or an F, always cusses in class or flirts with the football players. Probably the worst teacher ive ever had , make racist comments all the time and calls people out "oh that explains a lot youre first gen" like whats that suppose to mean? please save yourself the headache and choose another professor.
If you value your mental health. DO NOT TAKE HER
. She cusses a lot and tries to be funny by making racist jokes.
Overall not an amazing experience, I had a year-long class with her and it has never being a worst experiences, assigns 2-3 readings per week that are really gonna take a lot of time out of your day, and the readings are barely related to the topic she's teaching, she tries to be "cool" by when not necessary or funny, not a good professor.
Had Prof. Michaels several semesters ago, she is a good professor if you actually want to learn how to read/write at the college level. Most complaints seem to be about the amount of work she assigns. This is normal for a college class, you'll have to do it if you want to improve.
Intense workload in this writing class, but Unstuckstudy proved really helpful for staying on top of assignments. Lectures can be disorganized, but engaging with the material is key to success.
Just simply don't take her for your own mental health sake. The review are true, BUT again if you really wanted to "learn" she will be great at pushing you to do that... because there will be a LOT of reading and assignments for an undergrad class. She will NOT be an easy pass and let go kinda professor. Be prepared if you are going to take her!
Very confusing. She gives out work that involves long readings, basically every day. She's very tough on grading and will ask you to do multiple things on an assignment, just to get 100% on it. She's I guess somewhat chill, but when it comes to teaching...she's not the best.
I had her for English 20 my second year, and she was hard to work with. The way that she explains assignments isn't clear at all and the assignment descriptions don't make sense either. She doesn't really explain what she wants in the essays and only provides help in office hours which I guess is okay. Is also passive aggressive toward students.
Prof. Michaels is a very hard teacher and grader, but also rude. She pulled up my essay in front of the whole class and criticized how bad it was for 10 minutes straight. Then after class I talked to her privately about the situation and mentioned that I have dyslexia and ADHD. She continued to ask if I was on meds. It was very unprofessional
DO NOT TAKE. If you wanna get an A she seriously has the most wack requirements and you fr have to put in hours into this class. Was very rude and unapproachable. Couldn't ask her questions without getting belittled. Too many assignments per week. Fr made me miserable.Too bad theres a word limit bc she's fr horrible.
