Class isn't mandatory but highly recommended to ace the class. Interesting info, Renken definitely used videos and class participation to keep us involved. Good class, not difficult
Lecture can be long and boring, but she has her humorous moments. She's really nice and uses class participation to mix things up, but it's not like she's going to put you on the spot for something. You could probably get away with just the reading, since notes are on blackboard, but lecture helps. Tests are kind of hard and no curve...
Wonderful intro. class! I almost didn't take Renken's section b/c it really was tough with my schedule, but biting the bullet and having a crappy schedule was completely worth it and I'd do it again. She's a fantastic teacher; I don't think I'd have done as well with another lecturer. She's interesting, intelligent, nice, and (best of all) FUNNY
very friendly, approachable, fair, clear and understandable explanations and lectures
Good professor. She posts all of her lecture notes online so class participation isn't mandatory but she does make class interesting by showing good videos. Not a difficult class if you just know the lecture notes...
do not take her
Renken is a good professor. She is straightforward and funny. Her class isn't very difficult if you do the reading, and her lectures are interesting. I reccommend this teacher for intro to psych.
Class is fun and compelling. Teacher is pretty cool. Not too hard as a class.
I absolutely despise any type of math and this professor did a really good job of breaking it down into the simplest form of learning. The book is really straight forward. She is almost always available. Overall pretty solid professor.
Unfortunately she made me decide not to take Pscyhology as a major. The entire class focuses on not actually learning concepts but just choosing the best answer. There is no thought process, analysis, or anything that psych would normally be made up of. Do not take her. She in unfair and sees people as a grade.
I agree with the other person. The class was all about choosing the best answer, couldn't say it any better myself. If you are a good at multiple choice tests then you will probably get a good grade. There are no essays, just 3 tests for which she gives no study guides, just "study your notes and read the chapters". Lectures were pretty boring.
Her lectures were ok but her tests were kinda confusing
I took her for my intro class and felt she was more entertaining and down to earth than other professors I've had. So I decided to take her again for 274 and even though I despise stats...she made it clear enough for me to understand and ended up getting an A- in the class. Make sure you attend her classes..book wasn't THAT necessary. Tests were OK
Dr. Renken at least made an effort to make statistics interesting. She explained things well, was very helpful, and willing to answer any questions. She seems to really care about her students. I also had her for PSYC 100 and enjoyed it. Tests weren't bad as long as you paid attention in class and did the practice problems.
She is great. She's friendly and definitely knows a lot. Always more than happy to answer students questions. Tests are slightly difficult, but just pay attention and read book when she says to-that'll help. She's kind of quirky in a way, but definitely a great prof. Super nice and I engaging.
She's a nice teacher but you don't really need to go to lecture because she only talks about material on the slides which are posted online and almost always straight from the book. Not the most enjoyable class but an easy A.
She is a fantastic teacher! Explains concepts really well and actually makes me like statistics. Going to class is very helpful and labs are easy. Doing practice problems in the book is a great way to study for her tests. The tests are really fare, but you do need to study to do well.
By far the best professor I had in my whole college career. Besides being very good looking, she has a terrific personality. She is extremely intelligent. She will never know how deeply she influenced my life! I recommend all students take her classes. Dr. Renken is wonderful.
Great professor! Always can answer questions and knows what she's talking about. Posts lecture slides online, but you should still go to class because she will tell you what's important for you to know and go into more depth. VERY interesting class, took it just for fun and loving it so far! Scantron midterms, just 2, not too bad! Def read the book
Awesome teacher, extremely helpful and clear on all the topics.
She's a very interesting lecturer, especially if you're interested in psychology. The only downside is that tests are difficult and detail-oriented. She relies on the book and MyPyschLab a lot, so make sure to read.
Professor Renken is really great! She teaches the material very well, and makes a pretty boring topic somewhat interesting. The class is really easy if you take notes during lecture. I never used the book, not even to do practice problems
I loved Ann! She would go out of her way to make sure that everyone did well and her class was fun! I would definitely recommend taking this class!
Prof Renken is easy to follow in lecture. You have to read to do well.
So chill! Kind of boring but you have to do so so little to pass
She's really great; one of the clearest lecturers I've had with an impressive amount of background knowledge, so she can answer pretty much any tangential question she's asked. Read the book, it's definitely helpful. Also actually attend lectures, because the slides she posts don't give you all the things you need to know.
I enjoyed her psyc-100 class. However, i have certain points that id like to nitpick about her teaching style/grading assessment. 1) each exam is worth 25% of final grade - this includes the very first exam; since she never introduces past paper or anything, students would initially be shocked by the level of depth each student is required to know
(continued) 2) do not take jung as the TA; she assesses the students in the discussion unfairly- furthermore, in the final exam, there will be 3 qns that the TA makes that will be put on to the test, the questions she made were pretty badly written compared to the qns posed by other TAs- so do not take her at all cost; also her english is not good
Just print out the slides and take notes on them. Textbook becomes less necessary the more you pay attention in class.
Renken is a great professor. She explains the concepts well and gives very reasonable exams. Class is boring, but it's important to attend unless you can teach yourself the statistical formulas. Exams are easy and low-stress.
Professor Renken jam packs a lot of information into each lecture, but she makes it interesting and easy to follow. I found her tests difficult and a little hard to pinpoint exactly what she was looking for, but she is fairly approachable as a teacher. I recommend reading the book to supplement the lectures. No attendance taken, but lectures help!
I didn't enjoy the class, but she's a nice enough prof.
Prof. Renken is the best. I've never had a Professor that I felt deserved such as positive review before her. She is so nice and helpful. She makes everything clear and doesn't unnecessarily confuse anything. She makes the class fair. I really appreciate her for these reasons. I'm so thankful to she decided to teach at USC.
Very unclear on what she wants! Then complains that students didn't understand her. Very nice woman but I did not like her class at all. I went in ready to love her, but was unable to pay too much attention to her. Rather boring. Make sure to read! Her exams are extremely hard.
The material itself is pretty dry, but Professor Renken explains it clearly. She is so nice and helpful. Reading the text is necessary to doing well on the tests.
She is a great professor that keeps her PowerPoint lectures clear and to the point. While her exams can be challenging, they are an accurate test of the information a student should know after taking her class. There were three multiple-choice exams, all not cumulative.
Very clear in class and very helpful.
Contrary to what everyone else says here, this class is really easy if you study. Her tests are tricky... to those that don't do the assignments and don't come to class. She is extremely fair.
absolutely hated this class. boring lectures. couldn't focus. i felt exams were not reflective of what was taught in lecture. pretty much everything on exam came straight from textbook but she told us at beginning of semester it'd be mostly on lecture material. unclear with what she wanted.. take if u want to be bored out of your mind for 16 weeks
Avoid! She is a good lecturer and her class is semi interesting but her tests are impossible. I showed up to every class and spent days studying and got a B- in the class. There are no study guides and everythings fair game so its really up to chance what will and wont be on the test. Take Chopp instead. Test average was C... and theres no curve...
Frustrating exams..Was mislead of what would be expected of the class and the exams were mostly composed of tiny details from the textbook you think you wouldn't need to know when on syllabus it said 3/4 of the exam would be from the lecture. Lectures were boring and not helpful at all.
If you've taken a psych class before attendance to lectures isn't mandatory. TA's are all very helpful, professor is nice and tries to make going over the basics as not tedious as possible.
Take this class! :D
Renkin made me fall in love with psychology. Her classes are extremely clear. Mostly tested on coursework covered in the lecture so attendance is a must. Has 3 non-cumulative midterms and a lot of chances for extra credit. Downside: the class isnt curved. If you turn up for lectures, take notes, read the text book youre looking at an easy A.
Prof is clear in her expectations, presents material in a comprehensible way, and is kind and interested in students. Tests are reasonable if you've kept up with the reading. Deadlines are well paced. No complaints.
Shes an amazing professor! Take her :) All you have to do is attend lectures and its an easy A.
Boring Lecture, get more out of the book Exams are difficult, no curve Way too much detail for an 100 class No Extra Credit Take Madigan
She is pretty clear on lecture materials and love to interact with students. Her tests are easy if you really study both the material from the textbook and her lectures. Show up to her lectures and take good notes. Her lectures are pretty amazing. Highly recommend it to anyone planning to take psych 100
knowledgable about psy but included way too much info for a 100 level class. Tests are hard (responsible for all info in textbook, lecture, & mypsychlab). No extra credit or curve. TAs are helpful and grade easy. 2 group projects in discussion. No review sessions with TAs before tests. 10 SONA credits req (at least 5 in-person studies).
Class is set up to limit the amount of As. Be ready to read, have to keep up with the material
She made me fall in love with psych. Class attendance is mandatory if you want to do well, but with her amazing lectures you don't really want to skip class. 3 non-cumulative midterms and a lot of chances for extra credit. The best thing is, you can easily get 90300 by showing up to discussions and doing the assignments-takes 5 mins, really.
Speeches and videos are inspirational. She has a sense of cold humor. Slides don't indicate anything important and you should read through textbooks carefully. Fortunately no papers!
1- her tests are majority based on the book because she doesn't get through anything in lecture. 2-her tests are weirdly hard because such few material is covered in class. 3- get ready to memorize useless things as opposed to applying concepts. My AP psych class in hs was better than this. She's rather monotone but sometimes enthusiastic
Professor Renken's lectures are extremely boring and although she claims that 75% of her exams are from her lectures, you also have to know the textbook material inside and out. The discussion sections require attendance and participation, but are pretty much useless. Bottom line: Stay away.
Lectures are extremely boring. Not an easy class.
She is the best thing that has happened to mankind. I am doing a minor in psychology because I loved her class so much. The exams are based on the materials covered in lecture. 3 midterms (including the final) and non cumulative. Easy-Peasy.
Tedious lectures, she doesn't make the material super engaging. If I wasn't taking other psych classes that I liked I probably wouldn't have continued on in psychology. To be fair a lot of this has to do with the broad nature of the material covered in the course rather than the actual lectures.
Took this class as a life science GE. It is not an easy A by any means, so if that's what you're looking for then I would find a different class. The course material is interesting but lectures are pretty boring. Going to every lecture is not necessary to pass or even to get an A. Two midterms and a noncumulative final. Make sure you get a good TA.
Took intro to psych, enjoyed it for the most part although the three tests of the semester were rather challenging. Read the textbook (especially parts not covered in class) and start studying/memorizing early and it shouldn't be terribly hard. Not a complicated lecturer.
A good lecturer, but a very tough grader, and very unhelpful.
Most boring lectures ever, she just rephrases what is in the book but makes it even more complicated, tests are difficult, I liked psychology before I took this class, if you are taking it as a ge just take something else trust me, more neurology than psychology
A super disorganized professor. You can't have a clear understanding about psychology. The lecture is a mess and you can easily get asleep. A lot of materials in the exam will not be covered in lectures. So you need to read a lot before each exam. And you also don't know what will be covered in exams, no study guides. Study guide is the whole book.
Professor Renken is very knowledgable about psychology, but is very boring. You do not need to attend lecture to do well, but you probably should. Do your notes and you'll be fine. Three non-cumulative tests, no final. TA is very important in lab, mine was bad and it made a big difference. Class is not hard, it's just a lot of information.
Had her for PSYC 100/274/314, and she's been consistently clear and helpful. Excellent lecturer, explains psych and statistics concepts in understandable ways and grades very fairly. Be sure to ask questions or go to office hours, she's happy to clarify and really wants to help. Psych required classes are difficult, so I recommend taking her!
A must avoid professor. Extremely unhelpful and strict.
Professor Renken is a caring and approachable professor. I thought her classes are clear and interesting. She makes me consider taking PSYC as minor. But it is quite hard to get an A in her class as the tests are both too-in-depth and weirdly- focused.
Took the class as a GE and it took up way too much of my time. The lectures are extremely bland and the material covered is not interesting at all. The exams are difficult and completely based off of the textbook. You have to read the boring book to pass. Do not take unless you plan on going to med school
Very bright and friendly woman. Lectures are clear. If you are interested in psychology, you will find the material interesting. It was my favorite class this semester, looked forward to Monday and Wednesday mornings. The class was not hard, either. Yes, you have to attend lectures and study a bit. Again, if you like psych you'll enjoy it.
Psych 100 is a lot of review if you took a Psych class in high school. Pretty basic concepts, goes into decent detail. She makes it clear at the beginning that her tests are 75% lecture and 25% book material so if you read you'll do fine. Lab is literally just a discussion. Although there are two lab reports they hold your hand through them.
Biggest Mistake in College. Took this class as a GE; ended up regretting it. Renken is decently good as a professor but this course is not what I expected it to be. About 2/3rds of the course was biology and neuroscience. Would not recommend as a GE unless you love biology and are good at memorisation. Nothing to understand here, just memorisation.
Lectures were boring as hell. She explained aggression for 20 minutes, but then spent maybe 5 minutes on how synapses work. If you don't have a background in Bio, which was the only reason I did well on the exams, don't take it with Renken. She makes it a parenting class and tries to brainwash you that parenting isn't important
I loved this class! Dr. Renken is a great lecturer and the class was very interesting. I wouldn't recommend taking this class if you don't need it for your major or if the material isn't interesting to you because it's a lot of work for a GE. If you put in a decent amount of work you can easily get an A in this class. Final is non-cumulative.
Her lectures put me to sleep. She doesn't cover everything you need to know in class and gets side tracked easily. Make sure to read the textbook or do the inquizitives.
Tests test very specific and small parts of syllabus. Labs super easy. If you're good at memorization take the class.
Renken was really sweet, her lectures were to the point, very standard. The TA sessions are painfully boring. Also, PSYCH 100 has a lot of research participation requirements that are time consuming and it's impossible to get better than a B- without reading the textbook carefully. As a GE, it's too much work, but Renken is an excellent teacher.
If you don't read the textbook, get ready to fail. the lectures do not cover everything she asks for in the exams even though she says that a high percentage of the test is composed of the exam.
if you are in a STEM field, this class is an easy A. I don't recommend taking it for a GE unless you have good background in science. The lectures are interesting but a significant amount of material on the exams comes from the textbook as well, which she makes clear. Get research participation out of the way early so you're not stuck with a paper.
Hard for a intro psych class. She's not very engaging and pretty much just reads the lecture notes, and the tests are based 100% on the textbook. Pretty much need to memorize the textbook to get an A. I studied hard and got a solid B.
Easy if you're a STEM major - mostly review. If you're not, be prepared to memorize/learn a ton of new concepts. Dr. Renken is sweet and puts a lot of detail into her lectures, but she can be super cringey and can put half the class to sleep on some days. It depends on the lecture.
Professor Renken is a phenomenal professor. She's engaging, knows the material, and really wants students to enjoy her class. She is a clear communicator and if you pay attention, the concepts really make sense. Go to class and do the reading and you'll be fine. Best GE I've taken, but must be interested in Psychology.
Unless you are interested in pursuing Psychology, I do not recommend this class at all. I went to every lecture and did the reading on time and still didn't do well. She assigns a lot of reading, goes through the slides very quickly(need to go to class to pass the class), and the midterms are ridiculously hard.
Literally everything is tested out of the textbook. I don't know what people are talking about. I've been to only two lectures because they're at 8:30 am and although she is good at her job and knows what she's talking about, her voice is like butter and makes me fall asleep.
Professor Renken is great! It does takes a bit of effort to stay completely focused and tuned in during lecture, but the material itself is pretty interesting and Renken knows her stuff. The class is an easy A IF you put in the effort. Take good lecture notes -- that is the key!!
Renken is super straightforward and clearly lays out expectations. The few assignments outside the main 3 tests are easy to ace. The tests pull from the textbook/are more in depth than lecture. It took a long time for me to read the chapters and review my notes, but the material itself is easy and if you read the book and study you'll get an A.
Think this class is easy? LMAO NAH. Tests are 80% of the grade, like 300 pages to study for per test. Honestly, if its a GE for you, take it P/NP or just take another one because it is WORK. Also, other 20% is a ton of BS assignments that take years to do. Most of the class is p boring. Honestly, don't take it even if you've taken AP/IB PSYC.
If you took AP Psych, you'll survive. This class is basically everything from AP Psych, plus a little extra. If you didn't, it will be a challenge. A lot of info, no clear guide for studying. Tons of reading. Lecture and readings are incredibly important for exams since they seem to knit pick at little details that catch you off guard.
She is very boring when she speaks. You have to go to class because she uses the complete power points in class and you have to go to Lab. It's all tests and if you go to class and study the book you will do well. Just don't study the night before.
Professor Renken is a really sweet and down to earth professor. I'm a Psych major and so I really enjoy the material and for me, the lectures are always really interesting. A lot of people say the lectures are a bore but to me the way she talks makes the material interesting. If you took AP Psych, this class should be a breeze.
If you've never taken Psych before and are taking this as a GE, you'll definitely have some trouble. If you took AP Psych, this class will be easy. She has a calm way of teaching which some think is boring but it made me like the lecture more. Always available after lecture to answer your questions. 4 midterms (4th is semi-cumulative final, all MC)
The format of this class has changed recently so that all tests are multiple choice only. Since it is multiple choice, the class is fairly easy. Unlike most science classes, this one has no curve, so that is the only challenge. Professor Renken is very boring during class and is hard to follow. Few lectures are engaging.
Great choice for a GE, interesting material, great professor, and easy tests. Highly recommend -- only downside is that it can be a little bit reading heavy but if you do the reading and study you should do well.
Honestly, unless you're a STEM major or a perspective psych major don't take this garbage class. My friend's interested in psych and is cruising through this class but I'm just taking it for GE credit and it's by the worst class I've ever taken
tests arent that hard but READ THE TEXTBOOK!! she gives chapter outlines and ppt outlines, very useful. i suggest going to lecture, then read book, then use inquizitive to study. some of lectures are long but its all manageable. labs are easy and usually got out early. paper is nothing stressful, only took me 2 hours. very clear guidelines overall.
Good professor, interesting lectures. Use the Inquizitive as a study tool for the exams.
Professor Renken is very kind, caring, and knowledgeable about the subject. Pretty much all the content you need to know for midterms is in the lectures, and she teaches it in a clear, easy to understand manner. Some additional textbook readings were needed, but nothing unmanageable. Tests are straightforward.
Ann Renken has taught a lot of students at USC, so don't expect to be anything but another one. Her lectures are accessible and easy to follow, but I found that they sometimes put me to sleep... Make sure you read the textbook! She definitely takes test questions right from the page.
Literally class is useless. Like its fine to go and not that boring, but just read and study from the book and you'll be fine.
Your exams make up your grade with the exception of a paper and InQuizitive (a quizlet kind of thing). If you read the textbook, you'll get an A. Lectures are clear and straightforward; lab is easy and you get to get out early. For the test, make sure to study the lecture AND the book. Test questions aren't always covered in lecture.
Very knowledgeable professor. She structures her lectures well and teaches effectively. You don't have to go to class to get an A, but her lectures are very interesting and are worth going to.
This is the most straight forward class at USC. You get out what you put in. All the choices were multiple choice and matching which makes it somewhat easy if you did all of the reading. I got a C on the first test because I didn't touch the reading until the night before. I got an A on the next test because I studied. It's not rocket science.
It's not an easy A by any means but it's clear what you have to do and the effort you have to put in to get it. The worst enemy in this class is you. Lets just appreciate the fact that this isnt that class where the study guide doesnt match the test and the test doesnt match what the hell she's saying in lecture. its a fair and square papabless
Class is fairly easy, but she deletes content off the slides she posts to encourage people to come to lecture. Some test are poorly worded, so it's hard to pick a correct answer. Be sure to read the textbook if you haven't take psyc before. MAKE SURE TO DO INQUIZITIVE ONLINE QUIZZES. I forgot to do one, and my final grade dropped from A to A-
If you're taking this class for a GE its not an easy A. If you want an A you need to put in a good amount of effort. However, she provides study guides and the inquisitive helps a lot. But the inquisitive also takes hoursss to complete.I barely went to lecture because it was at 8:30 am and still got a B. Lab was easy too.
Just read, do Inquizitive, and come to at least some lectures. They're pretty interesting and so is she. It's a lot of info to pack into a semester, but Dr. Renken cares, and if you don't mind participating or going to office hours, she'll help you understand even the more difficult concepts. Tests are all multiple choice. Not an easy A, but close.
Dr. Renken is a great professor, very clear and had good lectures. However, just because this is a GE, don't expect for it to be an easy A ! You have to read and do the homework and it's a lot to memorize, especially for the final! Interesting material, just don't brush it off as an easy class. Also the labs are super boring, you just gotta go.
Super test heavy class, but if you keep up with her class you will leave it knowing a LOT about psych. Interesting lectures, but I barely went because I had the morning class, but the slides are for the most part posted online. Tests come from textbook, so you need to read each chapter carefully.
Whoever is saying to just read the inquisitives is straight up lying. While the professor truly cares about the course material, the lectures are very full and barely cover a quarter of what you need to know for the tests. Most subjective and misleading test questions of any class Ive taken. Multiple correct answers depending on how you interpret
Lectures only cover a quarter of what you need to know, so don't bother taking notes in class. Test questions are the most subjective and misleading questions I've ever seen. Many times it won't seem like any of the answer choices are correct and other times it seems like they are all correct. HORRIBLE wording that makes you second guess questions
Participation matters as in YOU GOTTA show up for labs. It's so dumb to miss lab and be lose those freebies. Do all the Inquzitives, read up on the chapters you really don't know, do the lab assignments, go to labs and you're almost guaranteed a B+
Save yourself. I was a straight A student until this class. It seems like easy content but the way the tests are designed makes the class unnecessarily difficult. The lectures do not clarify the content covered in the textbook either. Just find any other class.
I honestly don't know if she even teaches anymore, but if she does please do yourself a favor and take Professor Renken's class. She is really, really knowledgable and truly cares about her students. Although I did not go to office hours or even interact with her much, she showed genuine care when I needed it the most. An exemplary professor.
Ann Renken is very nice and sweet, and knows that she is talking about. Don't let the fact that its a 100 level psych class fool you, you still have to study a decent amount for the tests. If you study and read the textbook, you'll be fine.
