She reads off of her slides and only posts PDF versions. You'd think attendance wouldn't be mandatory then, but she requires purchase of TopHat and asks several questions throughout the lecture. Not a huge fan of the way she explains things; exam review was complicated and the test was way too long to finish in fifty minutes. No thanks.
Her learning goals are very specific and are a good sign of what is on the test. Utilize those and you should be fine. Lecture is a bit boring as she goes fast and is sometimes hard to understand, but she is nice and willing to help. Class work is not heavy and the book is barely used, but is a good resource.
Overall I would say she is a pretty good professor. Can go kind of quick in lecture sometimes but posts the slides online and you can follow along in Tophat. She is very nice and more than happy to answer questions. The first 2 tests weren't structured great but she was very open to student feedback and restructured the following accordingly.
Dr. Thijs was a great professor. Sweet and knowledgeable. Easy to talk to and very helpful in office hours. This class in general is hard and she does a good job of explaining the material.
Dr. Thijs is a super nice person and really does try to work with students to make the course better. Her tests are more straight forward than the other BIO 311D professors, but they are still pretty tough. Her final was especially hard and focused on some minute details. I still think Thijs is better than the other bio professors for the class.
I liked her for the most part. Lectures were straight forward and discussion sections were helpful. Tests are challenging, and the homework doesn't help.
You can see that Dr. Thijs is passionate about what she teaches. While helpful, a textbook is not required. Take good notes and you should be good on her straight forward tests. Three Exams with a final that is 50% last unit 50% cumulative. Online homework assigned every week but its not difficult.
She gives you the opportunity to get an extra 10 points out of the total grade points as extra credit if you do a super easy project. There is also a group section of the exams which makes things a bit easy and helps you get a higher grade on the exams than you would alone. LOTS of lecture slides so get ready for that. She's a sweet prof too
Dr. Thijis' class is relatively straight forward and relies heavily on lecture slides and supplemental textbook reading. While her tests are usually straight forward and designed with a group portion, limited extra credit opportunities and no test drops makes it difficult to make an A.
Thijs gives extra credit on an easy project bumping grades 2%. But, her tests can be confusing but she also has group portions to tests where you get high grades always, and she gives you the possible short answer questions ahead of time so that you can prepare your answers. Hard to get an A in the class bc she says an A is a 94 flat.
The class is set up with 3 exams and a mandatory final. The exams have a group portion which is a grade booster. There is also a 10 pt. easy extra credit group project. The exams are very straightforward and come completely from posted lecture slides and homework.
So lectures were really boring, but she makes the class really easy to get a good grade in and learn the material well. I didn't read the textbook and skimmed through the homework and got an A. Just show up to all lectures, discussions, and take really good notes in lectures because tests are super easy with even group section to bring scores up.
Avoid her at all cost. Does not know how to teach and her test are nonsense. Good luck :)
Dr. Thijs is a nice person but shes not a good lecturer. She fumbles her words, says um a lot, her sentences are incomplete because she pauses between words, and she goes through the powerpoints too fast. She was disappointed with our exam average and blamed it on us for not trying harder instead of asking what she was doing wrong.
Dr Thijs is not a great professor. Her powerpoints are very thorough; she states that the book is not needed, however, her tests are over book material and hard. She isn't very helpful during office hours and seems condescending when asked questions. She does not seem to care for the success of the students and blames them for the low test averages
One of the worst professors I have had at UT. She is not very helpful and she does not care for the success of the students. The wording on her tests are so weird that even when I knew the material it was hard.
Very good professor, she might seem intimidating but she means well for all of her students. Does not offer extra credit, so study well for every exam. Exams are not hard, but you have to understand the big picture of content covered in each unit, not memorize every small detail. Very fair grader. Lectures get a little boring sometimes.
Prof. Thijs isn't the easiest to understand because of her accent. Tests can be confusing, so make sure to listen in class and take good notes.
Lecture and homework seemed so easy but the passing rate for each test was always super low! Tests were not an accurate representation of what was taught in lecture which makes it completely hard to perform well. I learn a great deal but did not get a complementary grade for all of the work I put in.
The wording on her tests is extremely difficult to understand. Everyone had to ask what the questions meant during the tests. I wish I wouldn't have taken her class. Also in class participation is 75% accuracy, so getting a one hundred is gonna be some work.
Her tests are confusingly worded and her exam questions are so random. She would go over something very small during lecture and expect us to remember it for the test. Do not recommend as a bio teacher.
Thijs is really not as bad as people say on here. She is extremely nice and caring and her lectures are interesting. Her tests arent bad at all as long as you have a general knowledge of the situation. It is hard to get an A because you can only miss 30 points throughout the 4 tests, homework, weekly quizzes and the final, but an A- is attainable.
Dr. Thijs is a professor that you take in the worst-case scenario. Her test questions are extremely confusing and difficult to decipher in the 80 minutes alloted. There were questions on exams that only 30% of the class would get correct and instead of actually acknowledging that the question may have been confusing, she would blame the class.
Good professor who knows her stuff but going to office hours helps to understand things more in detail. 4 test that have multiple choice free response & a group portion which boost your score a bit. Test somewhat difficult because wording is tricky, very application based. Weekly homework, quizzes, discussion & lecture takes attendance .

She was not as bad as I thought. Tests were fair; there was always 1 or 2 questions that were tricky but the whole test was very fair.
Thijs is a SUPER caring person. She is honestly not a bad teacher and most of her test questions are from her slides. Her tests are fair, usually containing 1-2 controversial questions. All her tests have a group portion where the entire class answers them together. She is a blessing of a professor who actually cares about her students
If you're in her class, here's how to study for tests. Review all worksheets given in discussion and class, her FRQs on the tests are very similar. Review her slides from her in-class powerpoints. You can only miss a few points throughout the course of the year (94 is an A), which is why not many people get A's in her class, but her tests are easy
Professor is ok. She knows her stuff but mumbles a lot so it is difficult to understand her when sitting in the back. Discussion is required. Besides that it's the usual Bio course.
Exams were based mostly on power points from class, but they were SO hard. I would study way in advance and still not be able to pass them. The lectures are boring and super hard to stay focused and motivated. The one good thing about the tests were part of your grade came from taking the test as a group, so definitely a small grade booster.
Dr. Thijs is one of the kindest and most thoughtful professors I've had. Exams are very fair and mostly based on the powerpoints. She also values student input, if you have any concern she will help you out and always looks for ways to improve the course. You can tell she enjoys teaching and wants her students to do well. Also offers extra credit!
Honestly was scared to take Thijis after reading the rate my professor reviews. After taking her class i can say that she was a good professor. She is super excited to teach and likes to make the class interactive. The tests have confusing questions but the group portion of the test boosts your grade. She gives a lot of extra credit!
Dr. Thijs is super sweet. I was kinda scared by the reviews but she's super approachable. She has a slight accent which can make lectures a little hard to follow, but nothing problematic. She's also really energetic and knows her stuff. Enjoyed her class and TAs immensely!
I was initially scared to take her, but she was an absolute gem. I cannot praise her enough. She interacts with students, shows her personality in lectures. I had a lot going on personally due to Covid and she was the only professor I had who genuinely tried to work with me. Amazing professor and person, I would without a doubt take her again.
Dr. Thijs is one of the only few professors I had who genuinely cares about her students. During Covid, she was very accommodating and willing to work out something that works with everyone. I had an A before Covid, then dropped to a C during the switch to online classes, and ended with an A. She will work things out with you and help you succeed.
Dr. Thijs was an amazing professor. She is very organized and has everything in Canvas from day 1. Her lectures were very easy to understand. The one test I took before spring break was very fair. After spring break she was very accommodating and understanding. She gave so many opportunities to seek help. You can't go wrong with Dr. Thijs.
Not the worst professor. When I failed my first exam, I had a meeting with professor Thijs explaining how overwhelmed I felt with 2 classes and a lab on the same day of the exam. Professor Thijs compared me to another student that had more workload than I did, yet scored better. She proceeded to give me advice, but she made me feel horrible.
One of the most organized classes I've come across, very clear of what is expected of you. Lectures are just reiterations of the textbook (I have friends who didn't read & just reviewed her lecture powerpoints for exams). Personally, I find that reading helps you understand better. If you read you don't need to show up imo. Just reef from home.
She is GREAT for fully WB! NO tests! Weekly participation grades, open note quizzes, and open note final!! She offers asynchronous options as well if you can't make the discussion. Her TA's are also so nice and understanding. Every other prof's students complain about difficulty while her class is the best bc it's easy and helpful!
Her teaching style didn't really work for me and during lectures, she would often skip over important concepts and not explain them well. If you take this class and struggle with understanding concepts, be prepared to read the textbook a lot because her lectures only give a brief overview. Otherwise, great professor and grades are a fairly easy A.
Dr. Thijs is super passionate and knows a lot about biology, I overall really enjoyed this class, but I wouldn't say that it is easy. It's extremely content heavy so don't get behind, and definitely go to office hours to go over the learning checks. I think she's a very fair professor and really goes out of her way to help!
Literally did not learn anything from this class. Everything I know about BIO311D is off of my own self teaching. She was very rude when talking to students and unprofessional in my opinion. TA's are nice. Easy A. She doesn't actually teach anything during class just throws instapolls, so if you didn't understand anything from panopto, good luck
Her online BIO311D class was the easiest class I've ever had. Most of the assignments are graded on completion instead of accuracy as long as you attend the lecture and discussion section. There are also a lot of extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. Her class is very organized and she encourages students to ask questions if confused.
Quite possibly the easiest course I've ever taken. Dr. Thijs is lovely but I'm not a fan of the flipped classroom. The class is easy because it is open note, but the content is not. We answered InstaPolls in breakout rooms during class, during which I learned nothing. Even if you are engaged, your group members won't be and you'll waste 1 hour.
Dr. Thijs was a caring professor, but I personally did not like the structure of the course. The course itself was very organized and grading criteria was clear, but we had weekly quizzes instead of midterms, so it was hard to determine your grade until after the final. She cares for her students but had tricky questions on the quizzes.
I took this class Fall 2020. I only attended the first lecture. The professor uses Mastering Biology and it explains everything so well. There's also weekly discussion homework, but only one final exam which is open notes. I would recommend taking this course especially if you're not biology-inclined.
No tests just weekly assesments. She doesnt release the answers for them so you have to ask you TA about grades. There are a lot of grades that go in and she drops one of each assignment you have so fairly easy. Quizlet has a lot of helpful answers to her questions.
Hated taking this class online. Lecture is not engaging, and it's a lot of nonsense thrown at you with no explanation. Very nice lady who tries to work with you, especially in a pandemic, but doesn't know how to teach. I coasted through only because I read the textbook, not because of the teaching. I switched prof for 311D and it is so much better.
Solid choice for 311D. Dr. Thijs gives clear grading and the course is straightforward. The quizzes are complex and made to trick you. Wish the course was taught more synchronously and had more lectures than just the one lecture video on monday.
I took Dr. Thijs this semester online. I think she was a very good Bio II professor. You have a weekly quiz on monday over the lecture from the week before and then a homework assignment each week. The class load is very manageable and the quizzes are not hard as long as you actually pay attention to the lecture you'll be fine.
Lectures are spent 95% being in a quiet breakout room answering graded Instapoll Q&A while you have to watch an additional hr long videos outside of class for ACTUAL lecture. Assigned homework AND 5-9 pg discussion worksheets every week are just extremely long busywork on top of everything else. No actual exams, just quizzes every week.
Dr. Thijs class online was very easy but you need to do your work. There are 2 weekend assignments (mastering and discussion section handout) and weekly quizzes. Attendance is checked by completing instapolls. Grading is very fair. She is always open to helping her students.
This class is fairly straightforward and simple, with grading being based on a bunch of weekly assignments, with no tests other than the final. The lectures aren't really helpful and you get most of your info from an asynchronous lesson or the textbook, but the professor seems to care. Kind of boring but you learn what you need to & it's not hard.
Dr. Thijs class structures for both BIO311C and D are very clear. There are pre-recorded videos, in-class questions to answer, might for completion or accuracy grade. And during those classes you'll have chances to ask questions and get your questions answered with respect and care. Even the TAs might change, their discussions are very helpful too.
Class structure straightforward, you get a pre-recorded lecture for the weekend (wouldn't recommend, they're hard to pay attention to, reading off of a slide, takes hours). Instapoll Mon., Discussion and worksheet Wed, Homework Fri. Exams are simple but go over unexpected content, overall confusion, the book explains more. Made me dislike bio.
Honestly bad. Many pointless assignments that don't help at all for the tests. Lectures assigned outside of class too long on top of everything else assigned, wouldn't be as bad if they weren't so dense and boring. Class time spent doing silly instapolls and "review" assignments that never show up on the test. Just choose another prof
I don't love the structure of the class. The prelecture videos are always really long and dense and the Monday/Wednesday class tries to reinforce stuff but when it comes time for the midterm the applications are not the same at all. She's very nice and the material is easy enough but the midterms threw me for a loop.
test rubrics are insanely arbitrary. you could understand the content perfectly and still get an 80 on the midterms. she blames her students for doing poorly on the tests yet continues to make the exams over the most minuscule/brushed over details of the unit.
The class average for the last midterm was a 64. Somebody please do something about this professor.
Her class is extremely structured you always know what is expected from you. You can tell she loves biology and it's a really nice class. Your lowest test grade is replaced by your highest two so you could absolutely bomb one and still be fine. There's a quiz every week so the lowest ones won't be counted there's lots of room for error
This class was awful. Flipped classroom method left us with long monotonous lectures that are difficult to pay attention to. Her midterms were short answer questions only and the questions themselves were very broad and random. She blames her students for the failing class average when she fails to teach us the material well enough.
dr. thijs was very kind and understanding, but good LORD. i took this class as an easy intro-bio class, because i had the credits to exempt it already, but this? was insane. the flipped classroom is mostly what made this bad, because the lectures were often 1hr long on the weekend, plus a lot of useless assignments. saving grace is her kindness
It pains me to say this, but I actually really hated this class. I did not learn a single thing in it. The LCs are easy if you watch the lectures, but the midterms wouldn't be hard if the professor did a better job at explaining the material. The final is not bad. She does not make the material interesting. An A is not easy, get ready to work.
I liked the consistency of having the same sequence of assignments each week. Midterms were difficult but fair. Dr. Thijs also gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. She is easy to tune out during lecture, but youll be fine as long as you take notes on the Panoptos and complete the weekly assignments.
The structure of the class is clear. You have the same assignments due each week. The assignments are fairly easy but the midterms are difficult and have material that was barely discussed. Her lectures are hard to pay attention to and she doesn't do the best job at explaining. However, her grading system is easy and allows room for mistakes.
The class is organized but the flipped classroom model is hard to learn from. The weekly videos are dense/difficult to watch. Exams did not cover a broad range of material and questions were sometimes random. The in-class activities are helpful though, and Dr. Thijs does have a genuine love for biology. Grading is easy with lots of room for error.
Dr. Thijs is very clear on the expectations and structure of the course. The midterms are graded by short answers while the other assignments are mostly completion-based. It was uncertain which content to study for the midterms since the lectures were too broad and the homeworks were too specific, but the other assignments helped the overall grade.
Really loved this class. It was just the right amount of work and she had so many different activities that it didnt get boring. The panoptos are recorded and really difficult to absorb but I wouldnt take notes on them. Just go to class and do all of the activities and youll be fine
Thijs was the worst professor I ever took. Dont make the same mistake I did and choose another professor. Her exams were extremely detail oriented and even if you studied thoroughly, you very likely can still fail (I did many times) and theres only 4 exams. The exams are most of the class grade. I have so much regret taking her.
I felt like this prof just wasn't up to par. She relied on a flipped classroom and that didn't stick with many of the students. It's fast paced but I felt like she was not able to convey information well at all. I wouldn't recommend this prof at all but she is a nice person, it just makes the course hard to understand and do well in.
Dr. Thijs made biology more difficult than what it really is. Her midterms had nothing to do with the material being covered so you do not really know what to expect from them. Relying on Instapolls or recorded Panoptos to "learn" the material just did not work for me. However, she was always available for students to contact her and TAs were great
Amazing teacher, challenging class. She gives clear grading criteria and the class is very organized. Although there is a lot of work for this class, if you take notes on the Panopto's it is doable. It is difficult to get an A without being consistently good/perfect throughout the year. Midterms are only 15-20 questions so hard to do well on them.
Dr.Thijs is a solid choice if you are a fan of flipped-classroom learning. The majority of your learning and exposure to new material is within the Panoptos so make sure to take them seriously and pay attention. Going to class and doing Instapoll reinforces what you've learned, and a lot of the time the questions she asks will be what's on the test
Dr. Thijs made this class way harder than it needed to be. Not at all a fan of the flipped classroom model and the monotone lectures in the Panapto videos. The Instapolls didn't help either and I relied on the textbook to study. Her tests weren't too much, but she was still a very picky grader. Take another professor if you can.
Dr. Thijs is a kind person and cares about students, but the teaching style can be hard for some. The asynchronous videos are not that engaging. As a result, I felt like I didn't learn that much at the end of the course. However, the grading makes this class manageable because the exams aren't weighted heavily.
I didn't learn much from her lectures. Panaptos were confusing. However, she is a nice woman and gives you opportunities to bring up your grade by replacing your lowest test score with the average of all 3 tests. Overall, not bad.
Awful.
From my experience she was very kind and determined to make you learn the material. The midterms were a bit stressful since it wasn't graded by many points, but luckily there were other assignments (including E.C. and replacing lowest exam score) to offset bad exam grades. Take detailed panopto notes and do all the assignments and you'll be fine.
She was very kind to me whenever I had questions and really cared about making sure the students understood each topic. Midterms were kinda hard (I recommend doing the practice exams bc a lot of the questions are from those), and there were a few things due each week. Lectures got boring at times but I definitely recommend going!
Thijs was an amazing teacher and made the class easy and fun. Almost all of her test questions she covered in class or included in instapolls. The flipped classroom method made the class easier and overall she cared a lot about her students. Compared to my bio 311C teacher thijs was an angel and i seriously hope to have her again.
I love biology but this class made me rethink my love for it. Thijs is nice but her quizzes are extremely tough for the little detail given in PowerPoints. Read the textbook! My friends and I were constantly stressed about this class while others with different professors seemed to be doing fine. Dont fall behind, its a new concept every week
Dr. Thijs' class was really well organized, there was a clear schedule for weekly assignments so it was easy to remember them. She offers a lot of extra credit that boosts your final grade a lot at the end of the semester. Her tests are difficult in comparison to practice exams and she is picky about wording used on short answer exam questions.
Good class and nice prof. Async lecture, Instapoll, discussion, quiz are the four weekly grades. All except open-note quiz are completion grades if you go to class/discussion. Fair exams. Textbook may help, but very dry. Use online videos, articles, etc. and you can do fine. Focus on big ideas rather than small details. LEARN VOCAB AND DIAGRAMS.
Overall a better experience than BIO311C, Dr. Thijs sets out clear expectations through her course, her exams were low stress 15 MC, and 4 FRQs with 2 hours to complete. Most of the time I finished in 30 minutes. Flipped classroom was very organized, Panapto is where your lecture was and you would come to class take a quiz and do instapolls.
The course material tested is significantly easier and less in-depth than the material presented in class. You will learn primary through pre-recorded lecture videos. Attendance is mandatory, and if you do not like forced group work do not take this class. I did find Thijs to be condescending and not very approachable if I did have questions.
Dr.Tihijs is an average professor. I will say she's very condescending and will call you out in class. I did not feel comfortable asking her questions. The lectures and grading are fairly doable. Panoptos will be your best friend. Class is based on instapolls and there's a lot of group work.
Overall, not a bad class. Lectures are pretty dull, and you learn everything by watching pre-recorded videos online, which can be lengthy. Exams are much easier and go into less detail than we learn throughout the week.
Her exams and quizzes were easy compared to the course material. I don't feel like I did much learning within the classroom and the flipped style wasn't my favorite but it didn't hurt my grade. Be prepared to do much of your learning outside of class, but overall the coursework and the final were extremely easy and will boost your grade.
The class wasn't too bad. The whole reverse classroom thing is something that you have to adjust to, but it's not that bad. The in class stuff while very boring at times can be helpful. A good part of your grade comes from participation thing like instapoll's and discussion which aren't difficult. Her exams aren't too bad either.
The only problem I had with this class was the flipped classroom. At times it felt unnecessary to even show up to class. The tests were easy, and I felt like I actually learned from this class.
Could come off as incredibly condescending and hard to approach with questions. She had clear expectations for the class: one Panopto video every week and every class time would be spent doing Instapolls revolving around the video, and a weekly homework/ quiz. Her tests were straightforward, and she offered extra credit throughout the semester.
Not a difficult class, but it is very heavy in material. She releases weekly videos over the topic of the week and it's your job to teach yourself and show up to class knowing the material. The exams are half MCQ and half FRQ, so missing three to five questions will change your grade drastically.
Dr. Thijs is a very kind professor. Her midterms are very straightforward and they cover more big-picture conceptual stuff rather than the fine details presented in the Panoptos. I'm not the hugest fan of the flipped classroom, but the TAs are really helpful and give a general idea of what you'll need for the exams. Overall, I would take her again!
The M lecture does not exist, but the time is supposed to be used to watch her online lecture videos and complete the accompanying questions. In class W & F are used to go further in-depth, and answer Instapolls. MAKE SURE TO GO TO CLASS because the Instapolls can drop you a whole letter grade in the end (10%). She was the best professor ever!
She provide lots of extra credit which are enough to change your letter grade. Midterm and final are from learning check and mock exams. Go to discussion class, it could appear on the shorts answers in midterm. Take her class. Study the lecture. I didn't watch Penopto but I do study slides.
I liked Dr. Thijs. She used a flipped classroom style (Panopto outside of class, instapolls during class). The tests are very doable and straightforward. There is a lot of homework but the class is well organized so it's not too hard to do.
Professor Thijs definitely knew what she was talking about but would occasionally go off on tangents since she loves bio so much. Sometimes the way she worded things was a bit confusing but overall she's a caring teacher who really just wants her students to succeed. Just make sure you do all the assignments in a timely manner or you'll fall behind
Dr. Thijs is so passionate about biology! There is a lot of homework for the class, but it helps you really understand everything so that you don't have to study as hard for the exams. Make sure you go to class since attendance is taken through Instapoll.
SHE DOES NOT TEACH HER GRADE DISTRIBUTION FOR THE FIRST EXAM IS NOT OKAY AND SHE NOT EVEN GONNA CURVE IT. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS TAKE ANY OTHER PROFESSOR HORRIBLE REVIEW NOT CLEAR AND TRIES TO PURPOSELY TRICK YOU ON EXAMS. DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!
Her workload is insane, just prepare yourself. Good luck.
If you have the option to take this class DO IT. By far the easiest bio311D option offered at university. The class is hybrid, so no class on Fridays. Just watch the Panopto videos before the tests and you'll be fine. A is very doable.
She is condescending and rude to her students. Expects you to know everything already.
Thijs is very passionate about biology though she can be condescending. It's a reverse classroom that focuses on online lectures and in-class Instapolls. Tests are easy if you review slideshows/assignments. Pay attention when she tells you to focus on things like flowcharts, they are important for tests. Extra credit is offered for easy assignments
Does reverse learning, which is not everyone's style of learning. I would say it is easy to get a good grade in this class however you have to so all the assignments. Its not impossible just a tad time consuming.
It's a flipped classroom. She's ok, It's just feels like I'm wasting my time when in class because I'm just waiting around for the instapolls. The weekly assignments are annoying and don't really help you learn about the matirals (except for maybe the apply and extend). Exams are aren't bad just unclear sometimes. She can come off as condencending
I loved Dr. Thijs' class! I made some really good friends on the first day and we're still friends now! She strongly encourages talking with your peers so my biggest piece of advice would be to try and make friends. I went to her office hours and she was always very helpful and very nice to talk to! Personally, I loved learning from the videos.
This class was an easy A if you did what you were supposed to do. A good portion of your grade is essentially completion. I did not like how she, in an announcement, described peaceful student protest as being disruptive. That is insensitive and ignorant about a topic so heartbreaking. Where does biology stand on wiping out human life by the 1000s?
Dr. Thijs uses a flipped classroom style and uses the lecture time for practice/examples rather than teaching the material which some people may dislike. Good amount of assignments due each week, but they are pretty easy and simply something you check off everyday. Attendance is required. Exams were fair and reviews/practice exams are posted
Dr.Thijs and her TAs are great! It took time adjusting to the flip classroom but everything is clearly laid out from the beginning, so its clear what you need to do to get a good grade. Office hours are a great way of making sure you know the material. Additionally, the exams are fairly straightforward (quizzes are honestly harder but open note).
The flipped classroom took some getting used to, but the material is manageable. Attendance is mandatory, and the weekly assignments are straightforward. Exams are fair, and using unstuck AI and reviewing practice materials helped me stay on top of the content.
Good professor who cares abt teaching properly. Comes off as condescending. Awkward to talk to (for people looking for LORs). Tests are hard (~70% avgs) and are abt 50% of your grade lil bro. Classroom is flipped. Recommend taking if you like out of classroom learning. For an A you must go to M + W lecture for Instapoll, but F lecture is optional.
this is a flipped classroom, so if youre not used to that, i do not recommend this class. i personally felt like the tests were fair. there would be one or two trick/ difficult questions on the test. the homeworks were useless and a waste of time, but it helped my grade in the end. Thijis is lowkey intimidating to talk to.
She is an okay professor. It's not the worst I've taken so far, but she has setbacks. She is insistent that her "lecture" times are meant just for questions and not much learning. She relies heavily on her Pantopo videos for you to learn, but they aren't that great. I learned better by just studying her slides because they are well put together.
Anyone rating below a 3 is coping or cannot handle flipped classrooms. There was absolutely nothing difficult about this class; the exams were easy, and everything else was a participation grade.
She is a good professor. Flipped learning, but it's just like an hour outside of class you watch a panopto vid and you go to class and answer instapolls for a grade. (most of which she gives you the answer to after anway.) Ngl, I learned the last 2 units 3 days before the test and pulled of A's. Im sure if you study harder you can easily get an A.
I would say that this class isn't necessarily hard, as long as you put some effort into it. She's really nice. She also gives you extra credit opportunities throughout the semester that help your grade. I would say attend, just not let the Instapoll grade get below a 70%, but you can skip. No surprises on the exam, material is similar to practices.
Dr. Thijs is AMAZING! I genuinely felt that she cared about all of her students. There is a lot of material, and you have to adjust to the flipped classroom. There were no surprises on the exams. She also provides a lot of extra credit. The TAs are nice and so helpful. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
Dr. Thijis is a very good professor I do not regret taking her. She does a lot of extra credit and she is very organized. She provides practice problems, socratic questions and quizzes ect. Just stay on top of your work and you should be fine.
Dr. Thijs is nothing like what people say. She really cares about the course, is considerate, and provides extra credit. She does assign a lot of homework, but it serves as a grade booster. She may seem condescending, but she is European so don't be offended. Overall, she is a good professor!!
Flip class but it wasn't too bad, you'll get use to it! UGCAs are AMAZING (shoutout to Jon!) and will help you during lecture if you need help. Test are pretty far (based on lecture slides/A&E/instapolls). Very well organized course. Learning check are open notes but they can cook you a bit. Don't be afraid of this course bc of the rating.
I was scared because of the reviews but it wasn't bad at all. There are a lot of extra credit opportunities, and exams are extremely fair. It is a flipped classroom but i never watched the vids and was still fine. Also, there is a good amount of assignments but you get used to it. No class on Friday, and class is very organized
As you've probably read from all the other reviews, the class is flipped. Dr. Thijs does come off as condescending which leads to usually few people raising their hands but she's ok. Her tests are manageable as long as you look at the practice questions and take good notes. The lectures do come off as useless sometimes since it's just instapolls.
Flipped obviously. It's done in a way where you watch a lecture video on Sunday, practice it in lecture, and do homework/discussion over it later in the week. Overall pretty easy, although the tests have been challenging for some people I know. Lots of extra credit too, so don't be too bummed about a bad grade.
Like many other people say, this is a flipped classroom. I think it was a good flipped classroom though, because the activities done in class does help engage with the material. The instapolls, apply and extends, and homework assigned helps with making sure you learn and apply the material. Tests are fairly easy to study for (no surprises).
She's an amazing professor. Her class might seem hard at first because it's a flipped classroom and is your responsibility to watch the videos. There's also a lot of homework but if you do it, it will be very easy to study for the exam. People say lectures are useless because you only answer instapoll questions but they're good practice for exams.
To start it is a flipped classroom with a pre-recorded lecture that you watch on your own time Monday, then regular in person lecture Wednesday and Friday. I loved Dr. Thijs! Previously I took this course w/ a different professor and q-dropped bc of his demeanor, but Dr. Thijs is the sweetest. She looks out for her students and makes sure they pass
Flip schedule class, so we had Monday off to watch the recordings/learn the content. Wednesdays and Fridays were in class lecture. The exams are a mix of multiple choice and short answer questions, but it's not unreasonably hard so long as you study. There are extra credit opportunities too. Dr. Thijs is wonderful and truly cares for her students.
Dr. Thijs is awesome! It is super easy to succeed in her class if you actually put in the effort. She has a ton of extra credit opportunities too. The format is a flipped class, so you complete the lecture portion asynchronously. Exams are not bad at all- a lot of the material comes straight from the practice problems she posts.
The class is pretty easy and straightforward, do all the assignments and understand the content and you'll do well on the tests. It is a flipped classroom, which was not ideal imo but still worked out in the end. The hardest part was the Pearson homeworks, which were just plain out unreasonable at some points, but overall very easy.
This classroom is flipped but attendance is still mandatory. We only did instapolls in class and they were nothing like the test. One TA is helpful but I wouldn't have gotten an A without doing bio before this class.
This is a flipped class, so most of the material is covered in your own time (though you could use the class time on Monday too), but otherwise, it's not too bad at all. There are plenty of resources and the Instapolls test your understanding pretty well. Just pay attention to the Panoptos.
Professor Tjhis was an OK professor. Her class was pretty rough, not much Extra credit and her course was pretty much self thought. She won't give out A's like candy, you have to really work for it. Instapolls were only there to reinforce the content you were supposed to study in the assignments. Test wording is not it.
