great sense of humor, very easy going

Very nice, but weird interactive lecturing style with almost no content covered
Just not a very good prof in my opinion
cool with crutches
Best teacher i have ever had, her lectures were awesome!!
easy class...not boring
She makes the two hour lectures entertaining and educational.
interesting person. Exams = relatively hard
interesting teaching style, very interactive
Excellent speaker, Interactive & uses new tech., amazing teacher
interactive lectures, very openminded, funny, interesting, enlightening classes

intimidating, wasted a lot of time talking about class/group conduct etc
not what I expected - dissappointed
hard but fair - funny and well . . . . kind
Good prof...disciplined, effective, organized, punctual, REALLY GOOD
Take good notes and read exactly what she tells you to - you will learn and do well if you attend all lectures.
she is the best prof I have ever had. She is clear, helpful, funny and she knows what she is talking about. Not only I learned a lot I also enjoyed the classes. And she realy is fare!!!

Great class, very challenging, Ann has the best classroom management of any prof I have had up here! Make sure you know your theory! I made great friends in this class as it was very social.
not recommended
Not a very good teacher for a first year class. Her expectations were way too high and she was condescending and put down our work after the midterm. I wouldn't recommend her for a first year class.
If you can avoid her then DO! It is hard to be a male and earn a high grade in her class.
Extremely clear, 'cause well, it's her way or the highway. It *is* a bit challenging for guys to earn high grades in her classes, but oh well, you can always follow her way for a semester in return for a high mark. Easy courses.
Very bossy. She definately likes it done her way. Marking was unpredicatable, and I crossed my fingers every time I handed in something. Very unflexible.
Quite hard to obtain a good mark if you're a guy. Really likes to be in control(or appear so). She is very nice in person though, so going to see her during office hours is recommended.
avoid
Very hard, but seriously interesting classes (The TECH one is great!!!) Obviously knows her stuff, but her expectations of students are high, so come if you want to stimulate your mind, don't come if you want an easy grade.
Talks fast but is very clear, helpful and very supportive if you show you are really thinking.
This woman knows how to teach! Refreshing, fun, informative and comfortable. Favorite teacher at SFU so far.

Interesting lecutres and topics. She does not hide her opinion about the topics either which makes for a somewhat biased approach to the material. TA's marked fairly and tests were pretty easy. I dont know if I would want her for an upper division class though.
ann is a great prof...as a guy i didnt find it difficult to obtain a good grade...definately would recommend her, very passionate about her subject
I really enjoyed this class, she's a great prof and seems open to ideas that differ from her own.
it's not bad...her exams are quit hard...and she demands a lot form her students
She was a funny person but her style of lecturing was not ideal. It did not help that she did not wear a microphone or that she wasn't willing to repeat herself. Ever.
Ann is awesome. She's very friendly and open minded, gets the class involved in discussions and is very enthusiastic. That said, her version of 150 is entirely focused on the sociology of sports, and nothing else, and she sometimes treats students like they are in elementary school (getting into our "number groups", etc).
Best teacher I've had yet. Keeps you interested and awake in class!
She's my favorite prof so far! Keeps you awake in class. Is very sports-oriented, but also open-minded. Doesn't use microphone, but that forces you to listen. Love her stories and I found the tests fair, but remember to use more sociological terms!
Anne is a great prof who alwayz keeps me awake! her class is very interactive and fun. Midterms are fairly hard but make sure you know how to incorporate sociological terms in her essays!
most constructive class ive ever taken
Best professor I've ever had. Be prepared to work hard, and also to recieve clear, honest feedback designed to help you learn and improve... which you will, on many levels. Anee's classes don't just teach you course material-- they change the way that you interpret your world.
Agenda pusher who fails to hide it. Does a great job of indoctrinating young and weak minds.

Awesome
Go to class and listen because she provides no notes on webct or anything. There are barely any notes in class either. Very interesting class with Ann. Lots of class discussions..and ya..it's mostly sports related. Listen & watch what she specifically talks about b/c it's likely it will turn up on the midterm. It's fair. Study the terms.
good prof easy class as long as you follow what she says. doesnt seem like she likes anything that is against her views (feminist) even though she tells you to think for yourself. if you write something remotely **** on your tests be prepared to not do as well as you think
Good course, get's you thinking & opens your mind to new ideas. So many times you end up thinking "Huh I don't really have that much evidence to support my argument, time to revise." Very biased though, maybe on purpose so as to shock and motivate but some is probably personal as well. Focus was on sex segregation in sports. She was anti.
great prof!!! easy course, encourages class discussions and engages you. midterm essay questions are very obvious, read the text and study the bolded terms and you will get no less than a B.
I took this course only because it fit nicely in my schedule. but I found out her classes are amazing! she really has a deep interest in what she is teaching and hey, she doesn't even need a mike because she speaks so clearly.
The best class I've ever taken. Really interesting topics. Exteremely insightful. I don't even feel like I'm learning. Anne is such a funny professor too. She's very good at delivering points and forming discussions. Her midterms and finals are more than fair.
Ann is a fantastic prof that inspires students. Course material very interesting and sometimes a bit controversial, which creates fantastic discussions. She delivers material very effectively and is kind towards students. Easy midterms, but you must go to every class, as a lot of the content is from her lectures.
I'm taking sociological theory online with Ann and find that she is a hard ass in her marking. The 300 word count is ridiculous. She wants us to discuss in depth and I do not think this is particularly possible. When I try to email her for help or suggestions, she uses a tone that is not welcoming. You must share her view or else your toast.Gee!
Hard, unforgiving, and unclear.
She's a great teacher!!Her exams weren't too bad. Tutorials helped to clarify more since I asked for my TA's help a lot, rather than her's, just because my TA was right there. Luv her take home essay for finals!!Great proffff!!!
Was a distance ed course. Readings were sometimes hard to understand, and the questions for the small essays were unclear at times. Overall, the course was alright.. not that interesting but it was presented in a good fashion and she was helpful and nice.
Prof is great! Clearly passionate about her class material and makes an evident effort to make lectures interactive and interesting. She is fair in her assingments! LOVED her class
I took her 250/358 distance courses. There were small 1 page assignments (no final for 358); it's easy as long as you put in an effort. Base your assignments on the courseware, try and be as critical of the theories as possible. Participate in the forum. Great courses, easy marks.
She is a very hard marker. She has her views and marks against you if you do not agree with her views. I would not recommend to take any of her classes.
The fact that it is a distance ed. course makes it horrible. She is not to blame but the readings are confusing and bland. It would be better to take a course with her in person as opposed to distance ed.
wicked preperation, great class

This is a terrible course. If you don't agree with tutor/marker yo're in trouble. Took by dist. ed.--big mistake Avoid this one if you can
She is inspiring, a great speaker. I took SA 150 my very first semester at SFU. I have so much respect for her. Final exam was a take-home essay. Can't complain there. A briliant mind. Oh and once she brought her son to class he was such a cutie.
One of the best profs I've had and I only took the course for an elective. Very interesting class and presentation of material. Tests easy but marks papers fairly hard. Still easier than most classes. Oh and her son is adorable!! ;) She's inspired me to take more Sociology classes and I would love to take anything with her again.
She's a great teacher. Very organized, a good speaker, very passionate, and you will learn a LOT. She's fun to be in a class with. However, her marking is too hard, in that she gives a half letter grade lower than any other teacher would for the same work. Take that into consideration. Ask her about her expectations- that might help.
Ann is one of the best professors at SFU! she is compelling, insightful, inspirational and interesting! I loved this class, Ann was also my TA, I never missed a class or tutorial because they were so interesting! More profs should be like Ann!
Incredibly passionate about what she is teaching. But she is a bit controlling (ie. NEVER come into the class late, wait outside until there is a break), and she snapped at a few people who didn't deserve it, and a few who did...But if you are interested in the material, you will learn so much.
She is amazing!
Travers is really nice and provides fun and interesting lectures. SA 150 is a very easy course, everything is pretty much in the text book. Overall great course and great Prof. I highly recommend this course as GPA booster.
Absolutely amazing prof! She doesn't rely much on the text...make sure you show up to class and take good, detailed notes, since that is exactly what's on the exams. She brings up several extremely interesting and thought-provoking subjects that are much more exciting than the boring dribble that comes out of an introductory text.
Wow, she is one amazing prof. Very interesting and encourages in-class discussions. Just study from her notes and read over the text once and you're set. I'm looking forward to taking her courses in the future!
While I did not have Ann as this was distant ed. her course is clearly laid out and easy to follow. Workload is fair. Readings are easy to keep up with. Not dry like many philosophy courses.
I found her to be very fair and democratic. She is more than willing to discuss any concerns and welcomes any questions you may have. She also provided great feedback on my projects which has helped me in other classes as well.
The BEST prof ever. I had her the first semester at SFU, and now I'm at my 8th sem... I still think she's the best. Very fair marker, extremely friendly and HILARIOUS, intresting lecturer... what else can a student ask for? Take all the courses she teaches!!
So many reasons why not to take the class with this prof: she is not a fair marker, says the class is not curved yet 95% is an A+, has certain views and if you dont side with them dont expect to do well in her class, and there are much better profs you could take this class with. BEWARE!!!
Friendly and communicative, but narrowly focused for an intro class. We mostly discussed the topics she deemed to be most important (gender roles and sports). Limited focus turned me off of sociology. Also, if you have a bad TA (as I did), go to Ann and she will help you and be fair).
Absolute crap. She forces your views on you, whether you know it or not. Much of her material is biased and her guest speakers is even worse. But she is definitely an easy professor.
Ann seems to be one of the least biased profs out there. She does try to push her views on you but if you can argue against them using course material, she will mark you fairly. Make sure you draw upon course material when doing essays in midterms. Do not make your essay an opinion piece!
Ann is an amazing person and prof. She is passionate, loving what she does, and it shows. Midterms were incredibly fair, though marking on the essay portion was VERY inconsistent. Final was a take-home poster project which was marked very easily and you are given a lot of room to do whatever you want. Not a fan of sociology, but it was a good class

This was an awesome class! It was really interesting and quite easy. Attend lectures and you should be good for the exams. Her midterms were super easy and she practically hands you the test questions!
Awesome prof, so open minded and FAIR. Really fair, if you put in effort you get a good mark. Love how you can re-submit exams becasue her TA's are ridiculous and useless but if you make a fair argument she bumps your grade. Loved this class learned a lot, not difficult only 2 relitivly easy midterms if you study and one project.Ann was great
SHES CARES ABOUT U!
Ann is any amazing teacher, I have taken all her online courses, they are clear, and easy to follow, readings are interesting and clear. Ann takes the time to know her students.
Has great enthusiasm for the subject, but actually doesn't go into much depth with the material - you are forced to do the analysis yourself. Tests are easy, paper is short, group work is frequent but not a big part of the grade. Very democratic - allows students to set rules of classroom conduct. Overall, I just wish there was more course content.
One of my most fav profs. Very responsive to any requests/suggesstions.
I took SA 250 online so I didn't get to meet her much aside from hearing her lectures online. The content is interesting, though there are a lot of assignments and the tutor marker is hard. Try to take it in class, not online.
What I like about Ann, is that she has immense enthusiasm for Sociology, and her special topic of Sport in Sociology. But, she throws a lot of her opinions at you for critical thinking analysis. I think she indirectly wants you to adopt her opinions. Her powerpoints are also a little vague so reading the textbook is vital to succeed in this course.
Her lectures are well organized, easy to follow and uses her own experiences to relate to the course material. Only downside to the course is the fact that she uses cue cards to call on people. You are more than welcome to "pass" but you're still put on the spot! Otherwise, great course overall.
Good lectures, she lets you know the essay questions for the tests in advance. Over all no complaints.
She is an ok prof. she is really passionate about sociology and sport but her lectures are kinda vague and what is on the test mostly comes from the textbook. The second half of the course is all her opinions and it sucks for the essay question on the test if you dont have the same opinion
Her lectures were not clear and she's very vague. She jumps from topics to topics. You will have to listen carefully to what she says because she does not allow laptops and she barely uses a ppt. At times, she will call on people to participate in questions. The test is mostly based on the textbook. Must get the textbook!
One of my favourite teachers. Her class was very straightforward and easy. She was very caring and understanding of issues that you had and treated you like an equal. I learned a lot from her!
I had her for an online class, so I can't judge her personal teaching. It had audio lectures which weren't too helpful. The course topics were hard to understand and I didn't understand what they expected for the weekly discussions. The Pipeline book was interesting for the first few chapters but then I just found it repetative so I got bored of it
Ann is a very knowledgeable professor. Her lectures were very relevant to the discussion. During one break she visited with each of the remaining students in the room to see how they were coping with the material. I dislike it when profs go to great lengths to appease their students and having us develop our own class code was silly
Hands down best professor in the Sociology department. She was very clear and her lectures were very organized and engaging. She made my first year a lot more bearable with her straight forward midterms
Ann is awesome, best part of the course for me. She came round at the beginning of the course and introduced herself to me and we had a nice chat, she does little things like that which help to make everyone more comfortable.
Ann was awesome. I sat in her front row every class with a friend and after two lectures she started calling us her special front row. She's super nice and always picks up her cell phone! Do the readings and make sure you go to lecture!
Ann is easily one of my favorite profs! She's always open to different opinions and constantly tries to engage the class in the topic discussions. The material was pretty easy but make sure you go to class since she highlights what will be on the tests :)
Unbelievably amazing professor. I loved going to class and listening to her speak. She is also very approachable and kind. Just attend class, try to participate, and you will do fine!
AMAZING teacher. She interacts with the class and makes it interesting. The two midterms were VERY easy... She gave us the essay topics ahead of time, and there were only a few short answer questions. Overall great class.
Ann is really passionate about her subject and she understands that first year courses shouldn't be treated the same as fourth year ones. She makes an effort to get to know her students. Readings were relevant and midterms were straight forward and she even gives essay topics before hand. Great class to take when trying to get a feel for university
Open to questions, a fair marker, and clearly passionate about sociology. She's good but she tends to jump from topic to topic. She also leaves her powerpoint slides vague so textbook is essential but she's a straightforward examiner (hint: she basically gives away the exam questions!). She's funny too! Highly recommend her for a 1st-year course
She has an agenda and she forces it down your throat. Most people are on board with her stance but dare you disagree she will make sure you know you have crossed her.
Ann is an engaging lecturer & a fair marker. a decent amount of effort is required to do well in this class, but it's worth it because the material is interesting. one thing i didn't like was she was too opinionated. if you ever disagree with her, she will dislike it. she should present opposing arguments to what she thinks. a bit self-righteous
She secretly forces her feminist views on you while saying she wants to learn from us also. Shes relatively easy, but tough if you want to have something remarked. Midterm was straight forward, but you actually do have to attend lecture, tutorial, and read text consistently.
Tutorials aren't graded, 8:30 tutorial is not worth it. sleep in and you'll still do fine.
A really nice person. Easily approachable since she doesn't have a condescending vibe. Lectures are not really informative. Mostly open discussion and she usually gives HUGE hints to "possible" exam questions. Tutorials are good for getting the terms and key points down to memory through discussion. But they are not mandatory. Great prof and class
Great prof! Loved coming to the lectures and the tutorials! Midterms are fair. Attend all the lectures and the essay will be a breeze. For the short answers make sure to know your definitions that are in the textbook
Great professor. Graded appropriately! Audio lectures helped in understanding the text. Would recommend this professor and will be taking more of her courses.
Excellent Professor! Lectures are awesome, very interesting and relevant to everyday life. Tutorials do not have mandatory attendance, but I found them to be very helpful for the tests and interesting as well. Textbook is pretty helpful but you could get by with out it. Highly recommend taking SA 150 with Travers.
Loved going to the lectures and the tutorials. Its a super interesting and relevant class. Go to the lectures and the essay for the midterm will be a breeze and know your definitions for the short answer questions from the textbook. Highly recommend taking this class
Very passionate and engaging prof! She does not post lecture slides to encourage you to come to lecture, so make sure you do attend, and take down notes. The midterms and final project were fair.
Awesome Prof! Showing up to lecture isn't really necessary since the midterms are all terms that are in the book. It's a 4 credit course but seems like a three credit course since there isn't even much course load or anything too complicated about it. If you want your life to be less harsh for your first year take this class with her!
I've heard wonderful things about Ann. Unfortunately, I have only taken online classes with her which makes it difficult to tell about how she actually is. The courses were good overall. i hope to take an in-class course with her in the future given all the wonderful things I have heard about her as a person and as an engaging professor.
Amazing professor, she's also really funny if you aren't easily offended. Textbook is very dry and her lecture slides are essentially pictures, so be sure to listen. She is very engaging and hilarious so it won't be difficult paying attention.
She doesn't use or allow screens in her class, but she breaks the class up into groups and allows for study time with groups during class which really helps for understanding the material. I had a really positive experience and would recommend her in a heartbeat, but you definitely need to pay attention & take notes to pass.
Travers is an amazing professor. Her critical analysis is on point. Her lectures are intellectually engaging. Her tests are really fair. However, you have to be an exceptional student to get an A- or higher. If you are "Good", you will receive a B in the class. Highly recommend to take this class or any class with her.
Ann is the best professor I have ever had. You get what you put into the course. If you do the work at are engaged in the class you can come out of every day a better and wiser individual.
Attend friend and read
Keep up with the readings
Puts an assignment which requires first 2 months worth of reading, makes the due date 2 days after we are finished with the required readings. Doesn't let us use any electronics (laptop) No txtbook required, but wants us 2 spend money to print the readings out (ink cartridges r expensive) dont bother asking her to repeat what she said. She won't
Ann makes you want to come to class become of how engaging it is. This class in particular was heavy on readings, but it is a theory course. Assignment and exams were fair and she prepares you well for them
Ann is a seasoned prof with clear expectations of her students, and a good idea of average ability. Her classes aren't for the lazy. Come to class ready for discussion with notes prepared from the readings, and you should have no problem. Ask questions if you're unclear. Participation isn't graded, but it matters!!
An engaging and intriguing prof. Ann really keeps it real and is good at relating to students while remaining professional. And her dog is really cute!
Ann is possibly the best professor I have ever had. She is extremely knowledgeable in her field and that makes her lectures so interesting. She teaches in a way that makes you critically engage with the material and perhaps see things in a new light. It is very difficult to get an A in her classes, but what you gain from the course is much greater.
Probably the best choice for 350. Really helps you understand the readings in depth, connects theory to historical and contemporary issues. Clear criteria for the paper. Make sure you do all the readings for the exams, they are bareable if you study. If you don't love in class group work might not be the best format for you, but I survived.
Ann was a very intelligent prof however a very difficult marker. Be prepared to do all of the readings and understand each concept that is brought up. There are no participation or attendance marks. Marks were given into three areas (two exams and one project) which left little room for error. This class was special topics of children and society
Great prof, knowledgable and enthusiastic. Seminars cut between lecture and group discussion. Assignments tailored to student strengths. Really cares about their students.
Taking this course online we had little to no communication with the actual professor. All of our communication was with the TM, Anna Maslouskaya. She was wonderful, very helpful, very responsive whenever we had a question. Most of the work involves keeping up with weekly forum discussions for participation marks, I highly recommend doing these!!
On-line. Never seen/heard from Prof. Course was designed/presented on-line by Dr. Dergousoff. On-line confusing, so many different forms to manage btw slides, 4 different discussion groups, 3 different books etc. modules byzantine and bizarre small format writings. You have to pretend to write a "dialogue" etc. Total life sucking waste. No joy.
Textbook readings you can skim, just be able to expand on learning objectives, weekly discussions were graded very harshly, two papers were graded fairly, final exam was fair. Really depends on your TA, not much communication with TA throughout semester and was a tough grader for weekly discussions, easier distance ed electives include educ classes
One of the hardest classes I've taken, but also one of the easiest. Was tough to get a grasp of the philosophies, but the knowledge never left me once I felt the wheels turning. Txtbooks gave fresh perspectives. Take time to UNDERSTAND the material and you will do great. Don't take the classwork for granted. Exam easy if you know material well
Professor Travers is passionate, knowledgable and considerate towards their students. They are always available to meet during any time, however, they expect you to read a heavy amount of material each week and lectures are all conversation based rather than notes.
Dr. Travers was my very first professor back from my SFU days and it's only in hindsight that i can reflect on how much brainwashing there was? Rather than focusing on sociology we were literally told a million times over that there are no biological differences between women + men in sports, which is obviously untrue and is harmful to women+girls
tough grader and the comments for the paper are very confusing and bad too. Just don't take classes with them, just don't
Travers is such a bad prof. Their grading criteria is unclear and exams are so beyond hard. They ask us to find the page of quotes from 500 page book on exams. The lectures are very boring and not engaging at all. Marking is very unfair. Everything is set up for you to fail. I do not recommend taking a class with this prof, stay away at all costs!
avoid them if you can, they are a tough grader and the extra words for feedback is so unnecessary. class lectures aren't even lectures as it is mostly discussion-based
Probably the best professor I've ever had at SFU. Travers is a very effective prof, keeps classes super engaging, and is incredibly considerate of student wellbeing. This is a really tough class, with a lot of readings and difficult exams, but they make sure you have all the resources and support you need, and overall I HIGHLY recommend
This class is tough, but the professor keeps it engaging. Lean on resources like the reading and unstuck study to ace the exams. It's a rewarding course if you put in the work.
Encouraged me to carry on to a masters degree. -D.C.
Rude and disrespectful prof. If you disagree with their view, even if you have a good argument, they will not like you as a person. A good prof can see someone disagreeing with a legitimate argument even if they disagree with the point being made.
Travers is incredibly knowledgeable and very good at teaching. Yes the class is hard if you don't show up or do the readings, but I don't think I've ever learned this much from one class ever. It's reading heavy and the exams are hard, but you're guaranteed to do well if you put in the work.
